Deadline approaching to move Whitney cottages Michael Drake has until the end of the month to make it happen.

Three weeks.

That’s how much time Longboat Key Historical Society President Michael Drake has to move two historic cottages from the former Center for the Arts property.

“By the end of this month, they have to be off of the site,” Drake said.

Drake is raising funds to relocate the two cottages, which were built in the 1930s as part of the Whitney Resort, to make them a headquarters for the Historical Society.

In June, developer Jim Clabaugh purchased the 2.3-acre arts center site from Ringling College for $1.85 million. Clabaugh intends to construct 12 single-family homes on the land, and work on the site has already begun.

A July 5 memo from the Historical Society’s board of directors details Drake’s plan to move the cottages to 521 Broadway St. There, the smaller cottage, which is about 380 square feet, will be used as a museum for the society’s materials, including artifacts and photos.

looking into options to have the cottages moved if the campaign doesn’t initially reach the hopedfor levels of fundraising.

“In the event we fall short, Phase One donations will be refunded,” the memo reads.

The target for the second phase is to raise $450,000 to ultimately acquire the property at 521 Broadway St. for the Historical Society.

As of July 11, the society has raised nearly $20,000, Drake said.

The Historical Society has

distributed the memo to local resident groups, including the Longbeach Village Association and Keep Longboat Special, in an effort to raise money.

On July 10, Keep Longboat Special founders Carla and Pete Rowan forwarded the message to the 1,400 people on the group’s distribution list, urging them to donate.

“This is an effort that we can all get behind and support,” the Rowans wrote.

Along with reaching out to local groups to raise funds, Drake said the Historical Society is planning to bring back its fish fry in November, a popular tradition of the group.

Drake said he also hopes the town will get involved in supporting the Historical Society, as many other municipalities do with their own historical organizations.

“It’s almost a necessity that the town of Longboat Key become a huge supporter in our endeavors,” Drake said.

Drake announced his plan in June. In March, north end resident group LBK North began a public discourse about the possibility of the town relocating the larger of the two cottages to a former gas station property across the street from Drake’s proposed location. That property, though, is no longer available.

After seeing the memo, LBK North member Denton Crews said the group’s “cause is definitely worthy.”

“Saving the cottage is very important, as initially proposed

by LBK North, and having a home for the Historical Society is perhaps even more important,” Crews said.

“I’d have to say on a personal level that I would wish success for the (Historical Society).”

Drake makes his commitment to the initiative clear.

“One way or another, we’ll get this thing done,” Drake said. “We will make it happen.”

Turtle season going swimmingly So far, nesting numbers are breaking last year’s record.

t’s the middle of turtle nesting season, and so far, things are going well for our flippered friends. There are enough nests to rival last year’s recordbreaking numbers and the number of false crawls is down 32% — and it can likely be attributed to conservation efforts over the past 30 years, Mote scientists say.

“We’ve started seeing the increase just in the past several years, and our program and programs similar to ours have been around about 30 years,” said Melissa Bernhard, a staff biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory.

“It takes turtles about 25 to 30 years to mature, so if conservation efforts that were started 35 years ago were starting to reap the benefits now, it makes sense now that they’ve grown up.”

Turtles, which are very choosy when deciding when and where to dig their nests, are spooked by any number of factors, including bright lights, movement nearby or furniture on the beach. Any time a turtle comes out of the ocean to make a nest, but instead turns around and retreats to the ocean is called a “false crawl.”

Last year, when sand was added to some beaches, the number of false crawls increased. According to Bernhard, turtles will typically false crawl about 50% of the time, which the 2017 numbers reflect so far. But last year, they were false crawling at a 3-to-1 or 4-to-1 ratio.

The more normal numbers this year could be because the sand has “evened itself out,” she said, which usually takes about a sea-

son.

“I personally think that we don’t know enough about what’s good or bad about the natural beaches to be changing them and saying they’re still good,” Bernhard said.

Despite the beach nourishment, Sarasota County has the highest number of turtle nests for the Gulf Coast. As of July 8, Longboat Key was home to 999 nests, Lido Beach was home to 112 and Siesta Key was home to 488. At this point in 2016, Longboat Key had 572, Lido Beach has 64 and Siesta Key had 195 nests.

Currently, green sea turtle nests are higher than last year, too. As of July 8, Longboat Key had 11 green nests and Siesta Key had two. At this point last year, both Longboat Key and Siesta Key had zero.

Vice President of Longboat Key Turtle Watch Cyndi Seamon said green sea turtle nest counts go up and down each year. Last year was considered a down year, whereas 2017 is considered an up year.

Seamon said the initiation of turtle exclusion devices might be a reason why the population has been increasing. The turtle exclusion devices, TED, are devices that allow sea turtles to escape fishing nets.

And despite the good fortune most of the area beaches are seeing, Seamon said Longboat has seen nine adult disorientations.

For a female adult sea turtle to disorient, she has to come up on the beach thinking she’s going to nest, similar to a false crawl. The mother turtle then gets confused, usually by light from waterfront properties or beach furniture, and crawls for a good distance.

“A handful have gone a football length of the beach thinking they

were going in the right direction,” Seamon said.

Even at their highest, Sarasotaarea beach numbers pale in comparison to the number of nests on the east coast of Florida, Bernhard said.

“People are tripping over turtles, which is good.”

To keep turtle nesting numbers going in the right direction, Mote recommends people encourage nesting by being quiet and not approaching turtles if they see them; avoid using flashlights on the beach at night and shield lights from homes that could confuse the animals; and fill in holes in which hatchling turtles could fall.

“The biggest take-home is we want the beach to be as natural as possible for the turtles, at least at night,” Bernhard said. “When you go to the beach in the morning you can bring whatever you want, but take it all with you when you leave.”

Sea turtle nesting season runs until Oct. 31.

STILL MISSING A turtle on Longboat Key was potentially in distress after getting entangled in beach furniture, according to a post on Mote Marine Laboratory’s Facebook page July 7.

Mote’s Sea Turtle Patrol was monitoring the beaches in the morning for new nests and found a track indicating that a loggerhead turtle had been entangled in beach furniture.

The furniture, in the 6000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, was not properly stacked at the dune line, and the turtle likely dragged the chair into the water.

While it’s possible the turtle dislodged the chair, Mote’s post said the turtle could be in trouble if not — turtles need to surface to breathe, and pulling furniture would make that difficult.

As of July 10, there had been no sightings.

ince buying property on Longboat Key in 2002, B.J. Bishop has developed a strong presence in the town’s government.

Knowing her background as a planning commissioner and city council member in Leesburg, Va., friends and neighbors encouraged Bishop to take part in Longboat government. She was asked to join the board of the Key’s Public Interest Committee in 2004, and in 2006, she was appointed by commissioners to the Planning and Zoning Board. She serves as the group’s chairwoman.

We caught up with Bishop about why local government matters to her, and why more people should get involved.

Is there anything in particular that made you want to get involved in Key government?

I grew up in a community where, if you lived in that community, you were involved. You were either in the Rotary or you were a volunteer firefighter or you served on committees in the town. If you weren’t involved, people kind of looked at you like, “What’s wrong with you?”

I also feel like you can’t complain about what’s going on in the community if you’re not involved. Don’t tell me that you’re upset about X, Y, Z if you haven’t voted, and don’t tell me, “Well, if so-and-so just had done this ...” I’ll say, “Did you call them?” And if the answer is no, I’ll say, “Stop whining.” (laughs) Is that an attitude you see on Longboat?

I am impressed with the fact that people are very conscientious about voting here. I would like to see more people involved in government. The fact that we’ve had so many unopposed commission elections is disappointing. I think it’s a disservice to the town. I think it’s a disservice to those who are currently serving on the commission because they don’t get an opportunity to tell people what they think or how their views align.

Do you think younger people should get involved in town government?

We are getting more and more younger people buying here, and we need to get them involved and engaged because, quite honestly, what happens right now with the comprehensive plan and other discussions, is going to have a huge impact on them because they’re still going to be here in 20, 30 years. So I think it’s critical that more of a younger generation get involved, be involved, and stay involved.

Do you think it should be the responsibility of town government to find ways to get people involved? Or do you think that’s just a decision people have to make on their own?

I think it’s a decision people have to make on their own, but I do think it’s a responsibility of elected officials to encourage more civic engagement to get people involved.

(Consider) the 30-foot residential (single-family) height issue … There were citizens who got their community involved because they felt strongly about

it. What I would love to see is those same people keep that level of engagement going. I mean, quite honestly, I think the Charter Review Committee would have been well-served if they had gotten more citizen input, if they had gotten more community involvement, because it’s very hard to pass charter review suggestions on the ballot if nobody in the community was involved in making those recommendations.

The comprehensive plan is a huge issue that’s going to affect this community for the next 10

years, if not longer. Look at the impact the 1984 downzoning has had and the repercussions here some 30 some years later it’s still having. And yet, we’re not having the same level of interest or involvement on comprehensive plan discussions, and it’s going to impact this island in significant ways.

What do you think Longboat Key should look like in 20 years?

I don’t see Longboat becoming much larger population-wise, primarily because we are a

two-lane-road island. We can talk until we’re blue in the face about transportation, but that road is never going to get any wider. It’s never going to be able to have significant changes to St. Armands Circle or to Bradenton Beach to improve traffic flow getting off the island. What we do need to do is make it easier for people who live on the island to be able to have essential services here so they don’t have to leave when traffic is ridiculous.

You’re one of few women serving on one of the town’s advisory boards. Do you think it would be beneficial if more women chose to serve?

Here’s my personal experience with women and public office, for the most part. Most women are used to “let’s just solve the problem, get things done and move forward.” They’re used to negotiating with children and families, so … It doesn’t have to be their idea. To be right all the time isn’t as important as “find the solution and move on.” I was fortunate that when I served on the city council in Leesburg my first term, we were pretty evenly split. I think we were four-three men to women. And when I first went on the Planning and Zoning Board here on Longboat, we had fabulous women … There were four of us there as well, and it changed the dynamic.

It brings a different attitude, I think, across the board. So yeah, I would love to see more women involved. And we have some really bright, successful, talented women ... and I wish we could get them more involved.

With a waterslide, trampolines, rope swings and more, a colorful new arrival off Longboat Key’s north end is rapidly becoming a hit with boaters and beachgoers.

Though not in the city limits, the floating entertainment spot,

owned by Ed Toro of Fun Life Entertainment, has the attention of town residents and officials, too.

North end resident and former town Commissioner Pat Zunz said she is open to the attraction’s presence, noting that people appear to be enjoying it. And it’s better than another, less wel-

by boat, patrons traveling to the location by foot face a challenge.

To get to the spot, customers must trek through the mangrove-covered sliver of land that connects Greer to Longboat. However, Toro sees the remote location as a positive aspect because it prevents the structure from becoming crowded.

The area is already something of a focal point for the island.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Key police made 11 alcohol-related arrests, issued more than 60 warnings for boating violations and wrote more than 50 parking tickets. According to Zunz, it’s a problem that was muted over the four-day July 4 weekend.

“I think the police were very well prepared and did a terrific job,” Zunz said.

The numbers reflect Zunz’s statement. During the Independence Day weekend, Key police issued six parking tickets, gave three verbal warnings for alcohol violations and 13 verbal warnings for boating violations.

After Memorial Day, Police Chief Pete Cumming said he would station additional officers at the north end during the July 4 holiday. Also, one of the Key’s two marine patrol units was under repairs during the Memorial Day weekend while both were operational for the July 4 holiday.

Zunz said the action police officers took over Memorial Day reduced the impact of partiers during the most recent holiday, especially in terms of parking.

“I think the people got the message that you just can’t come here and leave your car wherever you want to,” Zunz said.

Assistant Town Manager Mike Hein said as long as it is in operation near the Key, staff will work to ensure Toro is in compliance with Florida business and safety standards. The town’s police were told by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office that the attraction is in state waters and meets U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission criteria, according to an email from Town Manager Dave Bullock.

Gene Jaleski, a north end resident and former commissioner, said he’s concerned it will attract unwanted attention and the crowds that go along with it.

“It will destroy our lifestyle,” Jaleski said of Longboat’s typically quiet, laid-back aethestic.

“If we don’t do anything about it, we’ll be like Bradenton Beach.”

Since late June, Toro has anchored his floating site Wednesdays through Sundays between Greer Island, also known as Beer Can Island, and Jewfish Key. He plans to continue through the summer.

“We decided to anchor here, and it’s been a great success,” Toro said, noting that the playground has been frequented by families, local kayak tours and passing charters. “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback.”

The playground costs $15 per person per hour to use, Toro said, adding no one under 6 is allowed.

Participants (or guardians) must sign a waiver before using it.

CONVENIENT, BUT …

Longboat’s Town Commission appears ready to hire Sarasota County’s Tom Harmer as the next town manager. He looks like a good fit. But do you buy the first car you see and like?

H

ire slowly, fire quickly.

That’s one of the great rules of business. But it’s so often violated — both ends of it.

On the back end, employers tend to be optimists. So they keep hoping that new hire — after 90 days, 120 days, after one year or more — is going to blossom into that all-star they thought they saw in the job interview. And every time, when they finally face the fact that he or she isn’t going to work out, every employer says: “I should have ended it sooner — for both our sakes.”

On the front end, hiring, if truth be told, is a complete roll of the dice. It’s such a painful process that employers easily succumb to convenience and the urge to get it done.

Too often to the employer’s regret.

Many of Longboat Key’s town commissioners know these experiences. They lived them in their professional lives as managers and leaders who hired and fired: Mayor Terry Gans, as a senior executive of a Northeast grocery chain; Irwin Pastor, owner of one of the largest Pepsi distribution companies in the Northeast; George Spoll, a Connecticut residential developer; Randy Clair, a senior lawyer at Mobil; Jack Daly, CEO of Columbia Gas’ distribution companies.

And yet with all of this experience, it appears they are heading toward rejecting “the hire slowly” approach. The Town Commission is expected to consider Monday a contract to hire incumbent Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer.

You can rationalize plenty of good reasons to hire Harmer. n He has been successful for the past five years in his role with Sarasota County government. If you ask anyone in the county, he or she most likely cannot think of one damning controversy that has erupted because of Harmer’s bad judgment or leadership. n He would bring familiarity — to Longboat Key and to himself. He’s a known quantity. Longboat commissioners have seen him in action and already know — to some extent — the type of leader and manager they would be hiring. Harmer, likewise,

knows the region’s issues and officials. He would be able to navigate those external channels from Day One. And the learning curve for him understanding Longboat Key likely would take much less time than it would for an outsider. n He’s convenient (there’s that word). He would spare the town and commissioners the time, pain and cost of a wider search. n And his hiring would close quickly the risk of not having a replacement on the job by the time outgoing Town Manager David Bullock leaves at the end of the year. You could credit town commissioners for acting promptly and making sure there is plenty of time to acclimate Harmer to Longboat’s ways — to be sure a sign of decisive leadership.

These are all legitimate reasons for hiring Harmer now.

But as we say in the news business, there are two sides to every story (at least two).

Have commissioners considered and explored enough other options?

Have they fully vetted Harmer?

Based on the town’s successful experience with Bullock, a former assistant Sarasota County administrator, you can understand the

thinking that Harmer could be a repeat of Bullock. Indeed, Bullock was everything and more the town needed at the time of his hiring. In fact, we, among many others, wish he would stay on.

But lightning seldom strikes twice in the same place. Commissioners owe it to themselves and their taxpayers to give this important decision time to percolate and consider whether other options or candidates would be better.

Start with what is needed. The commissioners — essentially a board of directors — are selecting a CEO who will lead and manage the town staff effectively and who will mesh well with the culture of Town Hall and the commissioners.

This is not a case of Bullock’s successor inheriting an incompetent, dysfunctional staff that requires a flushing and turnaround. To the contrary, Bullock has built a competent team. And it reflects Bullock’s thoughtful, business-like style.

Likewise, it’s apparent Bullock’s style fits well with commissioners.

He has never been a grandstander who constantly needs approval.

Bullock’s style can be described as an even-keeled leader who is good at anticipating what must be addressed before it becomes a problem; offers well-thought-out options; and communicates effectively with commissioners, rarely, if ever, surprising them.

Culture and values are important.

In that vein, having observed Harmer from across the bay, Harmer’s temperament, values and skills are much like Bullock’s.

Even so, and even if you have the right feeling, human instincts also are such that they tell us not to buy the first tomato you pick up from the pile or the first new car you test drive. See what else is out there.

Reaffirm your instincts.

Harmer may be the best candidate for the town manager’s job.

But taxpayers should be assured, and commissioners should reassure themselves that Harmer isn’t the only good tomato, that he is the best tomato in the pile. Hire slowly.

If you have driven and walked through the park, no doubt you saw the concrete walkway rimming the park and winding asphalt drive that meanders throughout what was once gorgeous bayfront acreage. The two pathways overwhelm the site and make you wonder: For a subtropical beach town that is so environmentally conscious, the obvious and more environmentally friendly choice would have been crushed shell, a common covering on the Key. This, too, was a mini-miscue: Before renovation, the children’s play equipment was shielded from the sun. The new, attractive playground equipment sits under a canopy of majestic, albeit scraggly, oak

trees. We’ll see how this exposure to the sun draws the toddler crowd.

Change is hard. And when changes are made, the inclination is to look for the flaws and overlook the good. Let’s reserve final judgment to see how Longboaters respond.

Here’s consolation: The concrete and asphalt are much easier to replace than a building.

Facts are facts when talking about election This is in response to the letter from Susan McCulloch published on July 6.

I am 88, a war veteran and during my work life I frequently utilized various assessment instruments designed to identify personality characteristics.

One of them, called the

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, was based on the psychology of Carl Jung and it converted inputs from the person being assessed to arrive at certain personality types.

Applying these criteria to the major organizations involved in American politics (the media and political parties) yields sad results. With few exceptions, currently the major media groups do not even bother to pay lip service to accountability, transparency or tolerance.

Advocacy of their agenda is paramount.

The Democratic Party, current party leaders and past candidates appear to be in a feeding frenzy for investigations and impeachment.

The Republican Party continues to flounder in attempts to govern.

Clearly, the American people are confused and angry.

Improving or reforming the media may be a lost cause; hopefully, the forces of competition will solve the problem for them. The two political parties should wake up; an internal, frank review of their current actions and emotions of both parties would reveal how far they have strayed from good governance and their pledge to serve the American people.

Internal political reform should replace political rebellion. The country deserves and requires nothing less.

If you understand the above and read her letter, Ms. McCulloch can clearly be classified a “Feeler.”

She states that “it is difficult for many people, myself included to accept the 2016 election as legitimate” and bases her statement on the following: n Hillary Clinton received more of the popular vote than Donald Trump. n The Russian effort to influence the presidential election.

If she used logical thinking to arrive at her conclusion Ms. McCulloch would clearly recognize two facts: n In the eighth grade I learned that the president of the United States is not elected by popular vote but by the electoral vote as was specified by the founding fathers and practiced ever since. n Though Russia may have attempted to influence the election there is not one shred of evidence to prove that they did.

China trip deadline is Monday Travel enthusiasts have a week left to register for the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce’s trip to China. The deadline is Monday, July 17.

The chamber is partnering with Citslinc, International Inc. in planning the nine-day, all-inclusive tour of Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai, a statement from the Chamber said. The trip begins Oct. 1.

The escorted trip is set up to be an introduction to the people, history, culture, commerce and daily life of China, the chamber’s release said.

For $2,099, travelers will get roundtrip airfare from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, four- and five-star hotel

accommodations, three meals a day, all tour fees, in-country transportation and local airfare, English-speaking guides, entrance fees for attractions and all taxes and airport fees.

The price is based on twoperson shared accommodations.

Single occupancy is available for an extra charge of $500. The trip is available to non-chamber members for an additional charge of $100. A side trip so Xi’an, site of the Terracotta Warriors, is available for an extra $200.

Longboat hosts League of Cities meeting The next ManaSota League of Cities meeting will be held at Longboat Key Town Hall at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13.

The MSLC is a regional league of the Florida League of Cities. It represents Anna Maria, Bradenton, Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, Longboat Key, North Port, Sarasota and Venice.

Barrier island roads study progresses The first of three phases of the Sarasota/Manatee Barrier Islands Traffic Study is complete.

Transportation, is an examination of how to improve the flow of traffic to, from and on Longboat, Anna Maria Island and Lido Key. FDOT has an ultimate goal of determining specific recommendations by fall 2018.

In June, FDOT completed the first phase: a review of previous studies and transportation plans regarding the barrier islands to compile a summary of recommendations.

The next phase calls for making observations and collecting traffic data. The final phase includes completing a transportation management plan and recommending improvements.

The first of the study’s steering committee meetings was held in May.

Upon arrival, the resident said he identified the car as belonging to a member of his family. The resident said he had planned to call the police back to cancel the report.

RUNAWAY SKIFF 1:00 p.m. — Off the Key, Bay, Sector 7 Unsecured Boat: A marine unit officer assisted a man in retrieving a skiff that drifted from his vessel. The man explained that his grandfather, who was also staying onboard, has a tendency to check and retie knots on the vessel throughout the day. In doing so, the man said his grandfather apparently did not secure the skiff. The officer found the skiff drifting in the channel with its owner swimming after it.

Ira Peterman, of Reddington, Conn., and formerly, Longboat Key, died June 27.

He was born to Syd and David Peterman of Yonkers, N.Y. He graduated from Harvard University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was awarded the Cohan Retailing Prize.

Following his service as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Supply Corps, he began his merchandising career at Abraham Straus and G. Fox & Co. Ira then moved into management information systems with IBM as a representative to the retailing industry. He went on to hold positions as vice president of management information services for Food Fair Stores and later vice president of administration of the Meldisco Division of the Melville Corp., now CVS. He and his wife, Beverly, raised their family in Stamford. During that time, he was vice chairman of the board of trustees for The Jewish Home in Fairfield, Conn. and chairman of Temple Sinai’s religious school.

He was also an active member of the school’s committee for the Harvard Club of Southern Fairfield County, as well as a dedicated solicitor for

Harvard’s annual fund drive.

Retiring to Longboat Key, Ira was on the board of trustees of the Sarasota Ballet, president of the Sarasota Ballet Association, vice president of administration and board member of Temple Beth Israel, a member of the Longboat Key Democratic Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Ira was passionate about travel, movies and the New York Times.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beverly; daughter, Amy Schneider; son, Eric; their spouses; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and sister, Elaine Stupp.

ROBERT GARVIN

Robert Victor Garvin, 89, of Sarasota, and formerly, Cincinnati, Ohio, died June 27.

He was born in 1927 in Vienna, Austria. In 1938, his immediate family fled the Nazis to London, where he attended King’s College School.

In 1945, the family emigrated to the United States, changing their surname from Grunspan.

Robert then served in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Service in Germany before he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 1950, Robert joined the Aircraft Engine Division of GE, where he worked for more than 42 years in various roles including engineering manufacturing, project management, negotiating and administering international license marketing.

He retired in 1992 after holding positions as vice president and general manager of GE’s Aircraft Engine Overseas Operation.

After retiring, Robert taught courses on international issues at the Institute for Lifetime Learning of the University of Cincinnati and at the Longboat Key Education Center.

He published a book on the confluence of technology, money and politics in the aircraft engine industry and a book about the founding of the MIT Rugby football club.

Since 1992, he has resided in Sarasota where he owned a home on Lido Key and was active in the Sarasota Architectural Foundation.

Robert also served on the board of Gloria Musicae and as president of his neighborhood association.

Robert was married to Rita Tobi Katz for 43 years until her death in 1999.

He is survived by his sons Andrew and Anthony Garvin;

Ian was involved with many nonprofit organizations, mentored future leaders and established a foundation to carry on his legacy of giving.

He enjoyed going to Colts games, Lake Wawasee and Longboat Key with his family.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Alaina Rolland; grandson Michael Rolland; and brother, Alan Rolland.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Miriam “Mimi” Rolland; children, Cheri Stone, Larry Rolland, Bob Rolland, Carol Rolland and Sara Moore; 14 grandchildren; two step granddaughters; four great grandchildren; sister, Betty Allen; and sister-in-law Barbara Rolland.

Ian MacKenzie Rolland, 84, died July 1.

He was born on June 3, 1933 in Fort Wayne, Ind., to the late David and Florence Rolland.

He graduated from North Side High School in 1951. He earned his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in 1955, and his master’s in actuarial science from the University of Michigan in 1956.

Ian began his career in 1956 at Lincoln National Corp. and held many positions, including senior VP, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He retired in 1998.

He was awarded the Sachem Award in 2012, Indiana’s highest award, as well as the Insurance Legends Award from the

t was an all-American celebration on Bay Isles Road July 4.

As 9 a.m. approached, Longboat Key residents and visitors started to line Bay Isles Road in their best red, white and blue attire.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce hosted its 15th annual Freedom Fest on Independence Day morning.

Grand Marshal David Miller led the parade around the quartermile loop. He was followed by the Rotary Club of Longboat Key and its Hot Diggity Dog costume contest participants, the Longboat Key Garden Club aboard its red, white and blue and butterflyclad float, businesses competing in the Cannons Marina best float contest and bike-riding kids.

This was the first year that Cannons Marina had to pay up in its best business float contest.

Ten businesses participated, and the winner was Longboat Island Chapel.

Congregation members waved from a red Volkswagen Beetle convertible clad with American flags and red, white and blue garland.

Chamber President Gail Loefgren said more people attended this year than in years past. One age group stood out in the crowd, she said.

“I think the kids,” Loefgren said. “The way they dress and the way they ‘ooh and aah’ with the parade. It’s fun to watch.”

After the parade, festival-goers gathered in Bicentennial Park

for more fun. The Longboat Key Garden club organized its annual butterfly release. Kids gathered in the butterfly garden and squealed with delight as their butterflies took flight.

Later, kids scrambled around the park playing games, getting their faces painted, making sand art and feeding horses from Sixteen Hands Horse Sanctuary. Blue Dolphin Cafe was on hand with Belgian waffles.

Weldon Frost led adventurous, loving life Memorial for ‘The last gentleman of Longboat’ planned for the fall.

W

eldon Goble Frost, 86, a retired petroleum geologist, passed away July 2, following the complications of pulmonary fibrosis. He enjoyed a wonderful life, rich with adventures, much enjoyable accomplishment, perhaps some mishaps and miscues, but filled with bountiful love.

He was born Jan. 28, 1931, in Kane, Pa., second child of Max Weldon and Elizabeth (Goble) Frost, who both became podiatrists. He looked back on his parents’ lives as not being perfect, but certainly well above average.

He was raised in small-town DuBois, Pa., and graduated from high school there in 1948. At the ages of 16 and 17, he spent two life-changing summers working on the ranch of Wilbert and Bonniebelle Manning near New Castle, Colo. The Mannings taught him the agrarian way of life, the joy of accomplishment that comes from hard work and provided a loving home-awayfrom-home.

He attended the Colorado School of Mines — at that time, the world’s foremost college of mineral engineering— on a fulltuition scholarship and graduated with honors on May 29, 1952.

He went to work four days later for an affiliate of SoconyVacuum Oil Co. (later Mobil Oil Corp.) and had an excellent 37-year career there. He began working in Wichita Falls, Texas, then Venezuela (1953), Libya (1954), Penn State University (1955), Turkey (1956), French West Africa (1958), New York HQ (1958), Paris (1960), Libya (1964), Indonesia (1974), New Orleans (1977) and finally London (1981).

He knew that he had enjoyed extremely good fortune throughout most of his career — “How rare it is to work in the oil

On a bright, sunny morning in June 1968, he married Brenda Taylor, an ever-smiling English girl — and someone who was to remain the constant, profoundly enduring love of his life — in the British Embassy, Tripoli, Libya.

Together they produced, and she proudly raised, their lives’ most treasured endowment: two fine sons, both born in Tripoli.

Survivors include that deeply loved, still-smiling-at-theworld-wife and best friend of 49 years, Brenda (“Management”); #1-son Terrence Weldon Frost (wife René) of Denver, who runs his own IT service business; and #2-son James Taylor Frost (wife Kate, of Kate Frost Inc.) of New Smyrna Beach, who is co-director of the outstanding Atlantic Center for the Arts; and those three highly beloved grandchildren (Max, Jolie and Hudson).

His sister, Billie, preceded him in death. His faithful beagle of more than 15 years, Gunnar, also

preceded him in death.

Recognizing that a society’s standard of living is directly related to the amount of energy that it uses, Frost was extremely proud to have worked as a geologist for an energy company. He lived and worked on five continents, and left, along with many others, his fingerprints on many of Mobil’s largest, and many smaller, oil and gas fields (Amal, Arun, Mobile Bay, Beryl).

He was one of the first four geologists to survey in Libya after that country opened up for oil exploration in 1954. He was one of the few of his colleagues who had work experience in the fields of surface geology, subsurface geology and seismic before becoming a supervisor and then a manager.

For 18 years, he was an affiliate vice president and exploration manager in those last four postings. The Exploration Departments he managed on four continents were immensely successful in discovering commercial oil and gas deposits and developing greater geological understanding of the area being worked.

His management style, gleaned over time from many others, was to organize efficiently, using small teams to delegate and then later follow up, thus leaving him some time to manage-by-walking-around. He also appreciated the simple management principle of surrounding himself with good people and listening to them. “We have two ears and one mouth, and managers should use them in that proportion.”

Adding to the success of this period, Brenda (“Management”) was uniquely successful among her peers, performing an important, caring role as a department manager’s wife, e.g., welcoming newcomers, entertaining visitors and subordinates, teaching English to foreign wives and providing flowers and baby gifts as the occasions arose.

Following his retirement to

Longboat Key in 1989, he busied himself with a productionsharing contract in Equatorial Guinea, petroleum exploration consulting in the U.S. and abroad, investing in oil and gas projects, enjoying the beach, a bit of boating and fishing, some golf and tennis, skiing, traveling — including semiannual trips to England and Spain — Habitat for Humanity, genealogy, the occasional random act of kindness, household maintenance and keeping in touch with longdistance friends and family. He was known for writing many sometimes humorous, pithy or snarky letters to the editor of local newspapers, or to public servants, on any subject that he felt might benefit from his “down to Earth” point of view.

Many may remember him as a shy person, but he grew out of this as he became older.

He was a member of Longboat Key Kiwanis Club and a very successful chair of its Scholarship Committee for many years (from which he derived enormous personal satisfaction); the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for more than 60 years; and Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary fraternities. He was an active alumnus of his high school and college and an active member of the Emerald Harbor Homeowners Association. He founded and managed Frost Energy Co., which he called “the largest energy company on Longboat Key.” On annual trips to Pennsylvania he enjoyed entertaining a non-functioning harem of highschool widowed classmates and widows of classmates.

On his daily morning walks, he would tip his hat to the smiling passersby, men as well as ladies.

One lady called him “The Last Gentleman on Longboat.” Being an irredeemable dog-lover, he carried dog biscuits for the many four-legged friends whom he would meet.

Throughout most of his life, by

fortuitous accident, he enjoyed a long-lasting warm and stimulating relationship with five really good, long-distance friends: Rod Davenport and Dr. Ron Fair from high school; Dr. Stewart Chuber from college and Libya; and Bob Fuchs and (Best Man) Ray Flurry from the Mobil years. Neighbor Larry Harry was a walking, bicycling and golfing companion for many years and shared his love of Longboat Key. And he and neighbor “Cash” Register seemed to be always on the same page. Fellow Mobil employees Bruce Jones and Bill Duggan shared his retirement years.

A celebration of his life will be held in the fall for family and friends at his home. Accepting the inevitable, Weldon Frost left this beautiful blue planet with only one regret — having to leave — but, nevertheless, he held an immense gratitude for having been given the “Gift of Life” by his parents — and ancestors — so that he could experience such an incredible journey and live so well and so happily in so many places and with so many friends during this most fascinating period of mankind’s history. He felt blessed to have been able to acquire during his journey some meager understanding of our marvelously complex world on which we all live ever-so briefly, within the incomprehensible vastness of an astonishingly complex universe.

He and his wife contributed to numerous charities, and during his retirement Weldon Frost rang the bell for the Salvation Army at Christmas for 28 years, so (“ding-ding”) memorial donations may be made to his favorite charity — the Salvation Army — which cares so very well for the less-fortunate. Donations may be also be made to Tidewell Hospice, whose gracious care comforted him during his last months. And a salute to the police, firemen and military who dedicate their lives to keeping us all safe and free.

In 2010, he wrote an open letter to U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., in which he said: “Be a leader, sir, on coal liquefaction.

This nation has roughly 250 billion tons of recoverable coal.”

In 2011, following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, he wrote: “Every driller and every rig superintendent working in the Gulf of Mexico must know exactly what BP failed to do at various stages …”

And when he wasn’t writing letters, he was active with

the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club.

For 28 years at Christmastime, he rang the donation kettle bell for the Salvation Army, sharing in 2009 “Vignettes from a bell ringer.” In the letter, he recounts seven occurrences that shaped his time as a red-aproned volunteer. Before he began retelling his stories, he explained why it was important to him.

“I watch parents and grandparents teaching their kids that charity is a part of our lives by giving them money and watching them put it into the red bucket,” he wrote. “We are, unquestionably, a nation of the most charitable

Vince DeLisi relieved Weldon of ringing one day and asked him to join the Kiwanis Club.

Frost served as the scholarship chairman for the club for about five years. During that tenure, he formed the Frost Foundation Scholarship, an award given to students going to technical colleges. Mobil, where Frost had a 37-year career, matches those scholarships.

“He is, independent of anything else, a great supporter of education,” DeLisi said.

Weldon Frost traveled the world.

He was a family man and prolific letter-to-the-editor writer.

But it was his battles over nuisance animals that connected him to many of his Longboat Key neighbors.

“Raccoons tremble at the sound of his name,” Public Works Director Juan Florensa said.

In 2010, Frost, who died July 2 at age 86, sought help from Town Hall in getting rid of raccoons in the Emerald Harbor neighborhood. They were unsafe and unsanitary, he said.

Not our job, the town replied.

Ultimately, after much discussion, the town created a brochure called “A Citizen’s Guide to Nuisance Wildlife,” in an attempt to inform residents how to keep critters away from their neighborhoods.

But that wasn’t enough, so Frost began trapping them himself. As John Wild says, he was the “self-appointed raccoon ranger of Binnacle Point.”

When Frost had an opinion, he made it heard, often in a letter to the editor. As Jim Frost, one of Weldon’s two sons, said, Weldon was a wealth of knowledge.

In 2009, Frost wrote “A political ‘bucket list’ to fix America,” which included public financing of elections, term limits for

of his life. He had a sense of family and tradition, Terry Frost, the Frost’s eldest son, said.

Frost made sure the family sat down to dinner together.

On Christmas, the family followed an English tradition — Brenda, Weldon’s wife, is British — and pulled Christmas crackers open that revealed a “fancy hat” that everyone wore while sitting around the table. Jim Frost recalls remodeling homes with his dad while his mom made them tea.

“He was an excellent partner, good provider and was always interested in the kids’ activities,” Brenda Frost said.

As longtime friend “Cash” Register said, there has never been a better friend. As Frost’s health began to decline, Register made sure the two spent time together by having semiweekly lunches at Kelsey’s on Cortez for $3 hamburgers on Tuesdays and 15-cent chicken wings on Thursdays.

Occasionally other people would join, usually Wayne Swift and Tony Pescatello.

“At those luncheons we were able to discuss and solve a lot of the world’s problems,” Register said.

And when he wasn’t solving the world’s problems, he was sharing stories with his sons of his adventurous days.

From sailing the Libyan coast to camping in the Sahara, and waking up with a snake in his sleeping bag, Terry Frost said his stories never got old.

“He just always instilled a sense of honesty and integrity in us as we were growing up,” he said.

Lionfish Derby spearheads invasive species

I

n 2010, the lionfish population in the Gulf of Mexico boomed.

Lad Akins, director of special programs for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), said the invasive population spread slowly until 2007. But in 2010, it exploded.

To help combat the population’s expansion, Mote hosted its fourth annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby in conjunction with REEF from July 7 to July 9. Fourteen teams competed to see which could catch the most lionfish, the largest lionfish and the smallest lionfish.

Mote’s statement for the derby said that lionfish are venomous, reproduce frequently and pose a threat to Florida’s native species and ecosystems.

The lionfish caught during the derby will be sent to an eatery and will be studied by Mote scientists to help them better understand lionfish.

On July 9, the derby ended with a cooking competition and tasting.

Stephen Phelps, chef and owner of Indigenous restaurant, said two things need to come out of the derby: People need to try lionfish and people need to figure out how to fish for the species.

“It’s a trend,” Phelps said. “It’s a buzz. That’s when you have to grab it.

It can’t end as a trend.”

Bird Key rings in the Fourth of July

I

t was all about the stars and stripes at Bird Key Yacht Club on July 4.

Club members and their guests gathered for a Fourth of July celebration complete with games and prizes, a buffet dinner, flag ceremony and potato car races.

As guests arrived, they began the party with carnival games, including darts, putt-putt and other quick games where participants had to either stack Diet Coke cans on paper plates to build a pyramid or hold a popsicle stick in their mouth while trying to balance dice on top.

Next came the flag ceremony and dinner, followed by the potato car races and fireworks.

Two years ago, Dwayne Cole lost his peripheral vision to a stroke.

Left alone, with his confidence shattered, Cole wasn’t sure where to turn.

That’s when Sandy, a black Labrador retriever, came into his life, thanks to a collection of Longboat Key area churches.

“She gave me my freedom back, that’s true, because I was afraid to walk out of the house,” Cole said of Sandy.

Sandy, who was born at Southeastern Guide Dogs, was sponsored by the Longboat Key and St. Armands Key congregations of St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, Longboat Island Chapel, St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, Christ Church, Presbyterian of Longboat Key and Temple Beth Israel.

“I thought it was a way, as a community of faith, to address a need in a tangible way, you know, [that] reflects our values to help others,” Rabbi Jonathan Katz, the former rabbi of Temple Beth Israel, said.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is a nonprofit that trains dogs for veterans and people who are blind.

The organization raises about 250 puppies a year, though not all graduate to become guide dogs.

sponsorship from the Interfaith Council of Sun City Center, but the Longboat congregations are separate entities.

The sponsorship, which cost $5,000, allowed the congregations to name Sandy. The church groups get continual updates on her progress with Cole.

For a year, Sandy lived with Southeastern Guide Dogs puppy raisers Joyce and Ron Landbeck. Ron Landbeck said that as a Christian, he must serve the Lord in someway. After a medical setback prohibited him from continuing volunteering in Ukraine and Russia, he attended a Lions Club meeting and heard about Southeastern Guide Dogs.

The Landbecks raised their first guide dog, Yaz, in 2011. Sandy is their eighth.

“From day one, her temperament and desire to please, her general sociability ... the dog knows no strangers, only friends she hasn’t met yet,” Landbeck said.

Katz, who attended Sandy’s graduation, felt proud when the speaker called the dog a “rock star.” He hopes other organizations and congregations consider sponsoring a dog. Aside from learning about the facility, he said you get to experience the process, which he calls inspiring.

“It would help develop a sense of community in the knowledge that they’ve come together and made this tangible difference in a person’s life, and then they would be exposed to what is happening in Palmetto that is really having a national impact,” he said.
