Not out of the woods Access for police to Greer Island isn’t as simple as it sounds.

n reality, it would be just a simple pathway, a way to get from one place to another without struggling through mangrove tangles and other hard-to- navigate vegetation.

Police say they need such a path to properly enforce the law and ensure public safety on Greer Island, also known as Beer Can Island.

But there’s more to the path’s creation than chain saws, machetes and a few hours of work.

And there are bigger issues, such as beach erosion and governmental paperwork at play. The police need, though, is plainly stated by Chief Pete Cumming.

“I need a path to get out there 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said.

Recent reports of excessive alcohol consumption and littering on and around Greer Island has prompted Longboat Key officials to look into ways for police officers to get to the recreational area quickly and consistently using the department’s all-terrain vehicle.

“This is not going to be easy,” said Mark Richardson, Longboat Key’s Streets, Facilities, Parks and Recreation manager.

Over Memorial Day weekend, nearby residents complained the atmosphere on the beach and surrounding locations was like that of a “frat party on the weekends.”

It’s not a new complaint. Police have responded to a similar situation in years past. In 2009, two to four police officers patrolled the island every Saturday and Sunday through most of the summer. In one case, a Fire Department ladder was used to help rescue a person in need of medical attention.

A sliver of land, covered in mangroves, connects Greer to the mainland. Because of erosion, Cumming said it’s a challenge for officers to get to Greer by land, especially during high tide.

On June 9, both Richardson and Cumming inspected the area to determine a feasible path. Town Manager Dave Bullock said the path would be just wide enough to allow the police ATV, which is about 50 inches across, to get through.

An area ridden with mangrove stumps serves as a walking path to Greer. Richardson said some of the stumps and dead mangroves on the connecting sliver can be cleared away to create a path for the police ATV, but some living mangroves would also need to be removed.

“No matter where we decide to go, some living mangroves are going to have to come out,” Rich-

ardson said.

Because mangroves are considered a protected species by the Department of Environmental Protection, Richardson said removal will require a permit, which town staffers are looking into acquiring. If the permit is approved, Richardson said he hopes any removal of living mangroves will be minimal.

Richardson is also determining whether the town will need to traverse property owned by nearby condos to make the path.

While Cumming respects the protected status of the mangroves, he stressed the importance of keeping Greer Island’s visitors safe.

“Human beings need to be protected as well,” Cumming said.

BIGGER PICTURE

360 North resident and former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official Bob Bunting is a vocal advocate for addressing erosion at Greer Island. He worries that any removal of mangroves, either living or dead, will put the area at a greater risk of erosion, potentially creating a breach between the gulf and Greer’s lagoon.

While Bunting said he understands the need for Key police to be able to access the area, he would rather see town staff work to expedite efforts to implement a long-term solution for erosion, noting a wider shoreline will allow emergency services to easily access the area.

“It seems to me like a logical way to move forward,” Bunting said. “That would solve a lot of problems that we have.”

The town is moving forward with two initiatives to address erosion at Greer. The short-term fix is dubbed the Greer Island Beneficial Use Project, which is part of a townwide canal dredging project. The town’s plan is to dredge sand from the east side of Greer, where a spit is nearly connecting with the mainland, and use the sand to reinforce the sliver of land on the west side.

That project is expected to begin in second half of 2018.

Olsen Associates Inc., the town’s coastal engineer, will present the Town Commission with options for a long-term solution for Greer’s erosion, including a permeable adjustable groin, in the coming months. Such a structure would trap drifting sand and passively build up sand on Greer’s shores.

A terminal groin on the gulf side of Greer Island was initially proposed with the two near North Shore Road, but the prospect was delayed after Manatee County challenged the plan. In a 2014 settlement, the town agreed not to begin permitting for the third groin until 2019, in return for construction of the other two.

WHAT CAN BE DONE? Short-term and long-term options exist to solve the issue of access to Greer Island.

Option 1: Cut a path through mangroves to ensure police and fire-rescue access.

Permits would be required to cut endangered mangroves.

Removal of living and dead mangroves could add to erosion risk.

Option 2: Plan to dredge town canals would move sand to Greer Island. The sand from this dredge would then be used to deter erosion on Greer Island by reinforcing the sliver of land on the area’s west side. The Greer Island Beneficial Use Project has an estimated dredge volume of 5,000 to 25,000 cubic yards.

Construction is estimated to cost between $400,000 and $1 million, plus up to $150,000 for design and engineering fees.

Option 3: Install a terminal groin on the gulf side of Greer Island. In a 2014 settlement with Manatee County, the town agreed not to begin permitting for this groin until 2019.

Real estate professionals continued arguing for changes in Longboat Key’s proposed new sign regulations this week, objecting mainly to the duration of sign permits and how they can promote open house events.

This year, the town has tackled rewriting its sign codes, largely because of a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that banned rules based on the content of a sign.

Instead, the town has been working to rewrite its rules, based on the size, location and duration of temporary signs, which promote homes for sale, open houses, candidates for public office, garage sales, construction projects and special events.

Since the 2015 ruling, Longboat stopped enforcing any contentbased rules.

Members of the real estate industry on Longboat, at a cityrun informational event last week, objected to proposals that would allow only two signs on private property, each with a maximum area of 4 square feet.

The rules would also prohibit signs on rights of way and require 30-day, renewable permits.

Wendy Leventhal, of Coldwell Banker, on Tuesday spoke of allowing an additional number of signs from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays, a prime time for open houses. Richard Perlman of Michael

Saunders and Co. took issue with 30-day sign permits. The permits come with a $15 fee.

“I just want to make sure you all realize that this 30-day period, that the permit you’re suggesting is good for, is absurd,” Perlman told the board.

Planning and Zoning Board Chairwoman B.J. Bishop said that six months is a more reasonable permit period, but she was uncertain about the prospect of allowing additional signs during specific periods.

“I don’t think too many neighborhoods are excited to have 10 signs sitting on their right of way coming into their neighborhoods,” Bishop said.

The board discussed returning to previously drafted language in the code, which allows for: n One 2-square-foot sign at any time. n One 4-square-foot sign when a property is for sale. n An additional 2-square-foot sign during an open house.

Board members also supported an additional 1-square-foot “sign rider,” which is a small sign hanging from a larger one, often used by real estate agents to advertise amenities such as swimming pools.

The suggestions from the most recent meeting will be incorporated into a new proposal, which could be brought before the board in September.

Homes more than 30 feet high could be a lot harder to build under new rules proposed this week by Longboat Key’s Planning and Zoning Board.

With residents arguing for a change in town regulations, members of the board on Tuesday requested the town staff draft guidelines that will prohibit any new construction, including rooftop decks, above the town’s height limit for single-family

homes in any neighborhood zoned R4 or R6. Communities such as Country Club Shores and Longbeach Village fall into such zones.

Rooftop decks would still be permitted as long as their access point is within the town’s 30-foot height limit.

The new rules could be ready for the board’s review by September, said Planning and Zoning Chairwoman B.J. Bishop.

Petitioners such as Nancy and Garry Goudy urged board members via email to prohibit exceptions to the Key’s height limit.

“The charm and character of LBK is very close to being ruined forever,” the Goudys wrote in an email. “Please don’t destroy the ambiance of our neighborhoods of single family homes.”

As for single-family homes on the rest of the Key, exceptions to the height limit would be possible, but only through a special exception. This process would require neighbors within 500 feet of the property seeking the exception to be notified of the proposal. A public hearing would follow.

Earlier this year, construction of a home at 585 Halyard Lane in Country Club Shores prompted residents to organize. Located atop the two-story home is a structure enclosing the top of an elevator shaft and a stairwell.

Many of the surrounding homes are single-story, amplifying the height difference.

The home was built by Hunt Brothers Development of Sarasota and is owned by the developer.

Charter: Small changes, big implications?

Charter changes could end up on the next ballot if commission approves.

Recommendations on changing the timing and methods of elections on Longboat Key are heading to the Town Commission.

Those ideas, and other suggested changes submitted by the town’s Charter Review Committee, will be considered by the Commission for a spot on the March 2018 ballot.

Many of the committee’s recommendations are small, such as adjustments to language or the deletion of sections already covered by state statutes, but some suggestions have larger implications, including: n Changing the mix of at-large and district commission seats from five districts and two atlarge to four districts and three at-large; n Moving elections from March to November; and n Allowing commissioners to hold office for two consecutive three-year terms instead of three consecutive two-year terms.

When it comes to redistricting, former Commissioner Dave Brenner said he understands the plan was put forth to increase resident participation in town government, but said he believes more research needs to be done.

AGAIN IN 2027 Since April, a panel made up of two former commissioners and three newcomers to Longboat Key governance have fielded, generated and discussed proposals to amend the town’s charter, which serves as a basic document under which the municipality operates, much like the constitution of a state. The process is done every 10 years. The panel held its last meeting on June 16.

“Changing districts is a very tricky business,” Brenner said.

Foremost, Brenner said, more information must be available indicating which residents are voting, which residents are involving themselves in Key issues and how many citizens see themselves as vacationers rather than residents. Then, those statistics can be used to determine the best means to increase public participation, Brenner said.

Former Commissioner Lynn Larson also expressed concern for the redistricting proposal.

“One portion of the Key could dominate,” Larson said, noting four commissioners could be from the same neighborhood if all three at-large candidates won seats from within the same commission district. “I think that’s wrong, but that’s my opinion.”

Planning and Zoning Board Chairwoman B.J. Bishop said the redistricting idea “has some merit,” noting the higher number of contested at-large commission races compared to district races in recent years. However, she opposes the idea of November elections.

To make her case, Bishop points to the political climate of Leesburg, Va., where Bishop served as mayor, after the town made a similar change.

“It’s been an unmitigated disaster,” Bishop said.

Combining town elections with state and national races intensified partisan politics at a local level, Bishop said, making for a more divisive political climate.

She worries the same would happen on the Key. Bishop also noted November elections would mean an increase in uninformed voters when it comes to local issues because they might be drawn to the polls by higher-profile elections for statewide office, Congress or president.

Larson shares Bishop’s disapproval for the idea, mentioning that fewer voters are on the Key in November compared to March.

From her own experience running for office, she said it’s vital for candidates to connect with voters in-person.

Larson said the town might benefit financially from November elections, but she called the cost of holding them during the season is “the price of democracy.”

Lido shores up dune protection County staff is working to protect the dunes on Lido Beach in advance of the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix and Fourth of July holiday celebration.

Most people looking ahead to the Fourth of July are eager for a long, leisurely weekend of cookouts and fireworks shows.

As Carl Shoffstall gets ready for the holiday, he’s searching for ways to prevent damage to the Lido Key shoreline.

Shoffstall, president of the Lido Key Residents Association, spends a lot of time thinking about that shoreline. Residents on Lido say the beach is perilously thin at the beginning of hurricane season, and worry that a single storm could cause major damage.

“It’s virtually gone,” Shoffstall said.

But the weather isn’t the only threat to the beach ecosystem.

Every year, thousands of visitors descend on Lido Beach for the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix, scheduled for July 1 and July 2 this year. Shoffstall fears the big crowds heighten the risk that

people will do something harmful to the beach.

Specifically, he’s worried about people walking across the dunes to get to the beach. The dunes are a valuable part of the Lido shoreline. Anchored by vegetation, the dunes are a resource for animals in the area, and they represent a stable source of sand separating the beach from the built environment.

“The dune systems are protection for the residences and businesses across the coastal area,” said Ryan Murphy, operations manager with the county’s Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources department. “When people are walking across it, they’re essentially killing that dune vegetation.”

On June 4, Shoffstall wrote an email to County Commission Chairman Paul Caragiulo and other city and county leaders. During the Memorial Day weekend, he saw people walking though the dunes. He asked the county, which oversees Lido Beach, to consider roping off both sides of the dunes before the boat races. Given the state of the beach, he said it was crucial that officials take proactive steps to defend the dunes.

Within a week, Shoffstall got a satisfying plan from county staff.

He worked with Murphy, who developed a list of precautions

the county could take to protect the beach. The county is working to fence off the dunes as Shoffstall requested along the entire length of the public beach. It will also bring in additional personnel for the weekend of the boat races and install signs along the beach in areas where staff is concerned people might try to cross through to the beach.

The most important thing, Murphy said, is making sure the public is aware of the potential damage people can do. He’s asked Shoffstall to reach out to members of the Lido Key Residents Association to see if people are willing to volunteer to help monitor the

beach and talk to visitors during the holiday weekend.

“A lot of what we can do to protect our dune system is about educating the public,” Murphy said.

The dunes aren’t the only things the county wants to protect. Murphy said staff will emphasize the sea turtle nesting regulations, including the hours people are allowed to be on the beach, and remind visitors to keep the beaches clean.

Shoffstall said the Lido Key Residents Association is also seeking volunteers to monitor the black skimmer bird colony on the beach and to help clean up the

shoreline when the boat race and holiday is over.

Lido Key residents are still pushing strong for some sort of short-term shoreline protection project as they await the potential dredge of Big Pass for renourishment. City staff is investigating its options, but nothing is planned yet.

In the meantime, residents are counting on the county and city to do what they can to make sure things don’t get any worse.

“We are working to make sure we take all the possible measures to protect the beach,” Murphy said.

Save the cottages

Longboat Key Historical Society President Michael Drake has secured the perfect place for the organization to have a home. Now it’s up to Longboaters: Is town history worth preserving?

R

alph and Claire Hunter are cheering.

The late founders, owners and publishers of the Longboat Observer were devoted supporters, stewards and keepers of Longboat Key history.

Toward the end and after their ownership of the newspaper, Ralph Hunter served as president of the Longboat Key Historical Society. He and Claire kept volumes of Longboat history, photographs and historical keepsakes in their home and garage.

One of their dreams was to have a permanent place to keep and display Longboat history.

That day is within reach.

The society’s new president, Michael Drake, former president of the Longbeach Village Association and a longtime Longboat Key resident, envisions and is campaigning for a perfect, permanent home for the historical society. He just needs a little seed money to make it happen.

Drake persuaded Longboat Key developer Jim Clabaugh, the buyer of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts property in the Village, to donate two historic Whitney Beach cottages on the art center property to the historical society. The catch: Drake must move them to a new location.

To his credit, Drake has identified the perfect location — almost a half-acre at 521 Broadway. It’s the vacant lot across the street from the shuttered service station and next to the Century 21 real estate office at the corner of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive.

It’s the perfect site for at least two reasons: It’s at the northern gateway to Longboat Key, an appropriate place to welcome curious visitors; and it’s at the gateway to Longboat Key’s historic Longbeach Village, one of the first settlements on the Key. Drake told us he has spoken with the owner of the site, Greg Ciccolo, another longtime Longboat family and property owner. And he says Ciccolo likes the idea — more so than developing a big home on stilts.

We were unable to reach Ciccolo for comment.

Are they worth preserving?

That’s always a tough question. It’s one thing to move the cottages to the site. It’s another to maintain them in perpetuity, especially given they are wooden structures, highly susceptible to Mother Nature’s elements.

You can already envision the future costs. And given the historical society’s history of being unable to sustain itself, you may need some convincing that Drake’s efforts and vision will carry on. You know the story: Every project needs a passionate champion — and others to carry on the legacy.

Longboat Key taxpayers could help sustain the legacy — if they felt it worthy. The Town Commission could do for the historical society what it did for the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center and what it’s doing to develop a new arts and education center near Publix. In both cases, the Town Commission tapped funding from the town’s land-acquisition fund to acquire the property. The money in that fund can be used only for parks, so in both cases the Town Commission designated and is designating the properties as town parks.

Commissioners could take a similar

step for the historical society site.

Afterward, the cottages could remain the responsibility of the nonprofit historical society, or the town could make them part of the town’s park system and funded by taxpayers.

Our preference would be the notfor-profit model. Indeed, for 65 years, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts lived, often a struggle, but it survived.

And in that time, it had many champions who kept it going.

Surely, there are those on Longboat Key who recognize the importance of preserving important reminders of Longboat’s roots and past. As a chronicler of Longboat Key history, this newspaper is one of those. And as such, we have made a commitment to Drake to seed his $45,000 moving efforts.

Time is short for Drake. The developer of the former center for the arts property is eager to begin his residential development and wants the cottages moved.

At this point, Drake — nor anyone, for that matter — doesn’t know whether the cottages will withstand the move or time. But making the small investment to buy time and move them would be better than living with the regret of not trying at all and watching two pieces of Longboat’s history turn to rubble and dust.

If you can, send a contribution to the historical society to preserve the Whitney cottages. Ralph and Claire Hunter would smile from above.

Scott, Corcoran: They are better than that With all due respect, it’s difficult now not to look at or listen to Gov. Rick Scott and House Speaker Richard Corcoran without a jaundiced eye and ear.

Ten days ago, the two Republicans traveled the state on their we’re all one, big, happy family “Fighting for Florida’s Future Victory Tour.”

But for three months, starting in January, we all remember how they were feuding Republicans — sniping, almost viciously, at each other.

You know the fight: The governor wanted $250 million for Enterprise Florida and $76 million for Visit Florida. Corcoran wanted to cut Visit Florida’s funding to $25 million and abolish Enterprise Florida, huffing repeatedly that the money for corporate recruiting was the worst of corporate welfare.

The dispute probably cost Floridians millions of dollars.

Economic development officials from all over the state traveled hurriedly to Tallahassee before and during the legislative session to lobby House lawmakers not to defund the

two agencies. This consumed hours and hours, not to mention the money spent to travel to and from Tallahassee. We heard over and over how economic development officials also were hearing from clients that Florida was being crossed off relocation lists.

Gov. Scott himself spent weeks and thousands of dollars traveling the state, holding press conferences to disparage Corcoran’s efforts and urge Floridians to contact House members to keep the agencies’ funding.

On top of this, the dispute put 79 Republican House members in a political bind. They had no good choice: n Vote to abolish Enterprise Florida to stay on Corcoran’s good side but land on Gov. Scott’s black list. n Or, vote to keep Enterprise Florida to stay on the governor’s favored list side but be banished by Corcoran for the next two years to the House woodshed.

We all know the outcome. Six months after the acrimony, six months after time and money whooshed away, Corcoran came

around to Scott’s side, and Scott to Corcoran’s.

“The message is that we’re on the same page in fighting for jobs and fighting for a world-class education,” Corcoran said June 12.

Now we can understand how this outcome is the give-and-take of politics and the legislative process.

But maybe it’s our naivete. What we — and probably millions of Floridians — don’t understand is how and why two of the state’s top elected leaders, from the same political party no less, didn’t see the damage and costs to themselves, the state, House lawmakers and their political party that would cascade from their differences over this one policy issue.

Scott and Corcoran could have — and should have — settled their dispute long before the legislative session began. Floridians expect dignified leadership.

In the end, the losers in this saga turn out to be themselves — Scott and Corcoran.

We know they are better than that.

The officer walked to the bridge tender’s office and was told a technician was already working on the problem. The gates soon were open and traffic resumed flowing.

NO ONE ABOARD 11:27 a.m. — Near Linley Street boat ramp Boat adrift: A report of a drifting boat prompted an officer to respond near the Linley Street boat ramp. The officer found a sailboat apparently dragging its anchor near the town dock and boat ramp. The officer tried to reach the boat’s owner, with no initial success. No damage was done to city property.

ON THE SIDEWALK 1:23 p.m. — Police Department Found property: A man came into the Police Department to turn in a Visa card, found on the ground in front of Harry’s Continental Kitchens, 525 St. Judes Drive. After accepting the lost card, a police officer tried to contact the cardholder, with no initial results. The officer notified management of the restaurant that the card had been turned over to the department and was being held in a secure evidence locker.

Commissioners give OK to pursue Sarasota’s Harmer for manager job

Longboat Key commissioners on Monday gave their outgoing town manager permission to pursue Tom Harmer, the Sarasota County administrator, as a candidate for the job.

Dave Bullock, Longboat Key’s manager since 2011, announced this year his planned retirement in early 2018. Longboat commissioners this month discussed how to proceed with replacing him. In a public meeting, Commissioner Jim Brown stressed the benefits of seeking local candidates who, like Bullock, understand the intricacies and nuances of overseeing day-to-day business on Longboat Key. A county spokesman on Monday said Harmer was focused on the county budget process and was not available for comment.

He said Harmer had not been contacted by Longboat Key officials.

Brown called Harmer a “very personable person” who has done “an excellent job” with Sarasota County. Brown said he believes Harmer would be a good fit for the town.

“I hope he’s interested,” Brown said.

Harmer has been with Sarasota County government since 2012, coming to the deputy administrator position from the private sector. He became county administrator in 2014. Harmer has more than 30 years in local government, including eight as city manager of Titusville, adjacent to the Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s east coast. He previously served as that city’s fire chief and emergency manager. He held similar roles in Tallahassee.

Dave was a U.S. Navy aviator serving in the South Pacific during World War II. When he returned, he married Phyllis E. Kee, and they spent 68 years together before she died.

Dave graduated from Tufts University then joined Kemper Insurance, where he remained for more than 35 years.

After retiring, he and Phyllis spent 25 years on Longboat Key, where they enjoyed the beach, golf, tennis, boating and dining with friends.

In 2009, they moved to Carmel Terrace, an assisted-living community in Massachusetts.

The staff and residents there helped Dave to continue exercising at the gym, take part in tai chi classes, dine with relatives and friends and attend the Tufts Alumni Weekend Banquet.

Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; brothers, William, Robert, John and Thomas; and sister, Anna Lombardi.

He is survived by son, Robert Kee; daughters Carol Kee, Janet Coonfield, Debra Winn and Rita Davenport; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

On April 12, 1956, 28 people gathered at the home of Guy and Melanie Paschal for a worship service.

The Paschals had called 15 neighbors and invited them, but as word spread, so did attendance.

The Paschals’ home, which was a barn studio on Longboat Key’s Wake Island, now known as Hideaway Bay, became a spot for Sunday morning assemblies of more than 80 people. Thus, an early chapel formed.

Today, the congregation is known as Longboat Island Chapel, but its roots run back to the Paschals.

Melanie Paschal, 95, died June 13.

Melanie was born to Melanie Eustache and Yasaburo Kashima in New York City on May 26, 1922. She lived on the island of Martinique until she was 9 and then returned to New York.

In 1949, she married Guy Sherman Paschal, and they moved to Longboat Key. Despite only living there for nine years, the Paschals left a legacy on Longboat. So much so, that in 1955, when Longboat was incorporated, Guy was named “Honorary Lifetime Mayor.” He died in 198 at age 87.

Together, the two were instrumental in founding the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, the Longboat Island Chapel, the Longboat Key Volunteer Fire Department and the Longboat Look-out newspaper, according to the book “From Calusas to Condominiums: A Pictorial History of

Longboat Key,” written by Ralph B. Hunter.

What sticks out to two longtime Longboaters is the Paschals’ home on Wake Island.

Although he was only 5 years old at the time, Cannons Marina owner David Miller recalls going to their home for those Sunday services and singing in the choir. Realtor Tim Field said the forest around their home was so dense you could barely see 20 feet in front of you. Though Field doesn’t remember too much about the pair, his father, Herbert Field, was friendly with them and bought their property when they moved.

“They were both very eccentric but great,” he said.

After their nine years of island life, the Paschals moved to Clear Sky Farm in rural Manatee County. It was there that Elsie Horst met Melanie. Horst was the Paschals’ housekeeper for more than 40 years.

Horst describes Paschal as “one to go by the books.” She liked to follow the rules, but Guy liked to bend them.

Upon arriving at their home one day, Horst asked Guy, a research chemist, what they would be doing. He told her they were going to bottle a mint extract. “... And Melanie looked at him and said ‘Guy, she hasn’t been cleared by the health department,’ and Guy looked

at me [and said] ‘well she looks healthy to me,’ so we bottled.”

Aside from working as her housekeeper, Horst likes to think she was a confidant for Paschal, too.

“She was more reserved, although she shared stories of her growing-up years in Martinique and after she came to the states, but she didn’t elaborate a whole lot of things,” she said.

As quiet as she might have been, Paschal kept herself busy.

was active in the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Longboat Fire Department and was president of the Sarasota Civic Ballet, which she built to 225 students before turning it over to the YMCA, “Calusas to Condominiums” says. She and Guy hosted radio talk shows in the 1960s and a television talk show in the 1970s.

Paschal was also a member of the Manasota Track Club, winning trophies and medals from the Senior Olympics.

Gabriella and Miranda’s, I think, seemed to just be the appropriate solution, and I think the architect designing the building saw their scheme as one that would add to her architecture,” Peterson said.

“It’s a win-win for everybody,”.

Their design is now up for discussion as a possibility for Plymouth Harbor’s new facility.

“We had the feeling in our mind of what it was supposed to look like, but then to get there, it took all semester,” Ebbesson said.

Because the building itself was already designed, the students had to design their porte cochere to coexist with that structure, which proved to be challenging.

“You have to take into consideration someone else’s design, and their sort of pattern or just sort of something they’ve done,” Crowe said. “Sort of repetition, any voids or coloring. There’s just so much that you could choose that we can customize, so it’s really interesting to play off what someone else has done and find a way to reflect [that] design.”

In the end, Crowe and Ebbesson’s designed the porte cochere to pull away from the building and

extend to cover pedestrians from rain, because one of the ideas is for pedestrians to be able to get out of their cars and pick up passengers.

“They said if they build it, they wouldn’t change anything except maybe raising it a little bit higher,” Ebbesson said.

When they were finished, the pair was under Plymouth Harbor’s $100,000 to $120,000 budget. Their design would cost about $20,000 in materials.

This wasn’t the first time

Peterson’s students got hands-on experience. In the past, students have worked on hypothetical developments for Bayfront 20:20 and facilities at Nathan Benderson Park.

“I think they learn it’s not just academic,” Peterson said. “There are real buildings, real structural issues and real license needs, and besides creating an excellent archetype, they had to solve the problems and meet other requirements.”

abriella Ebbesson and Miranda Crowe didn’t want to leave any idea out.

They were given a semester to design a porte cochere, a covered entrance for cars to drop off passengers. Twenty drafts later, they had finished their masterpiece.

The two University of Florida architecture students were enrolled in local architect Guy Peterson’s lab in Sarasota during the spring 2017 semester.

It was there they and their classmates were tasked with an unusual mission.

Plymouth Harbor, a retiredliving community, approached Peterson because the board was considering a student-design competition for the porte cochere and courtyard of the new Northwest Garden Building.

Peterson received permission from UF for his class to do this instead of a seminar, and from there, his students spent the semester designing and budgeting ideas for Plymouth Harbor.

The students were split into groups of two, which is how Ebbesson, 28, and Crowe, 24, became partners, and later, winners of the competition.

“They all did a wonderful job, but I think in terms of getting all the things they are looking for,

Tidal Tykes explore New Pass Inlet

T

he Tidal Tykes campers didn’t mind the cloudy sky or humid weather.

They were on a mission.

They were searching for seashells, starfish and hopefully even some shark teeth on the morning of June 13.

The camp, called Diverse Universe and held by Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, focuses on teaching campers about the marine world.

Before setting off, campers played an ice-breaker game.

They stood in a circle holding hands with a hula hoop starting on one person’s arm. Each person had to move the hula hoop over his or her head to the next camper, without breaking their hands apart.

Once they completed the circle, the campers split in two groups. One group went to learn about Mote’s shark tank and the other group explored New Pass. After snacks, the groups switched adventures.
