The first green sea turtle nest popped up May 30 on Longboat Key. It’s believed to be the first green sea turtle nest on the 36 miles monitored by Mote Marine Laboratory. Cyndi Seamon, vice president of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch, said although rare, they think there will be more green sea turtle nests this year than last year.

After the storm: ‘Don’t kid yourselves’

Recovery from a hurricane is a long-term process, one weather disaster expert tells a Longboat Key crowd.

Destroyed homes, streets littered with debris or flooded with saltwater and sand.

Those are the images of a community struck by a tropical storm or hurricane.

Craig Fugate has seen them all before. The keynote speaker at the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce’s 15th Annual Disaster Preparedness Seminar was Florida’s director of emergency management from 2001-2009, when the state was struck by multiple storms. He directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency from 2009-2016.

His message on May 26, at the Longboat Key Club focused on how residents can best handle a storm’s aftermath.

Fugate offered some takeaways on how to get back to normal: UNDERSTAND INSURANCE

“Do not let anybody tell you that you do not live in a flood zone,” Fugate said. “You want to make sure you have the funds to rebuild and repair against all hazards.”

Fugate stressed that, without flood insurance, a policy will not

cover any damage due to rising water, which can be caused by something as simple as a clogged storm drain or as devastating as a storm surge.

“It may not just be wet carpets and wet sheetrock,” he said.

“It could be that the structure is gone.”

Many forms of insurance often require weeks before going into effect, and many policies can’t be written at all when storms approach. The lesson: Don’t wait to the last minute.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Fugate said the first days and weeks after a storm are the most dangerous.

“Pace yourself,” Fugate said.

“Don’t become the next casualty.”

In 2004 and 2005, when Florida was hit with six hurricanes, Fugate said the leading cause of death was head trauma from falls off ladders and roofs. Heart attacks are also common.

He reminded residents that most hurricanes occur in August and September, meaning high temperatures and high humidity.

Because the storms often cause power outages, air conditioning is largely not available.

susceptible to heat stroke, cardiac arrest and death, Fugate said.

AVOID SCAMS

Fugate said it is common for people to drive around hard-hit neighborhoods, seeking cash for on-the-spot repairs.

“Why don’t you just take your money and burn it?” Fugate said.

“You’ll get more pleasure out of it. They’re probably not a licensed contractor, and if they are, they’re definitely nobody you want to do business with.”

Even if these scammers do the work, Fugate said it will likely not be up to code. He added that unlicensed workers will not have insurance, so if they are injured

while working on a property, the homeowner could be responsible.

He suggested calling the police if such workers appear.

“Sometimes just going over and talking to a neighbor does more good than just about anything else we could do to help us through the tough times,” he said.

Rebuilding a community takes time: It could take years to get things back to normal, Fugate said. “Don’t kid yourself,” he said. “This will not get better in a couple days or a couple weeks.”

Fugate stressed that when communities do rebuild, residents should ensure infrastructure is

better prepared for another devastating storm.

Other speakers included Bob Harrigan, chief meteorologist for ABC-7 News, and Steven Guetschow, disaster program manager of American Red Cross of Southwest Florida.

Harrigan relayed a piece of advice he received from a Coast Guard official who helped rescue Louisiana residents during and after Hurricane Katrina: Text messages often get through when phone calls can’t.

Herman Kruegle, who serves on the condo board of Whitney Beach, came away from the event with a new outlook on storms.

After the event, he said he will discuss with the board taking a deeper look into the condo’s insurance policy to ensure everything is properly covered and make changes if needed.

Susan Phillips, assistant to the town manager, urged residents to sign up for e-notifications about hurricane conditions from the town’s website, as well as the automated weather warning system Code Red. She said if residents need assistance in signing up for the services, to call her.

“Every now and then, we may need to evacuate for a hurricane,” Fugate said. “But that’s the price of paradise.”

What would it take to become a

ONE-COUNTY LONGBOAT? Town examines what’s involved in erasing county border across the island.

own Manager Dave Bullock recalls a meeting in December, when the mayors of Longboat Key, Bradenton Beach, Anna Maria and Holmes Beach delivered a presentation to Manatee County commissioners.

Commissioners were shown that, while residents of the barrier islands make up less than 3% of Manatee County’s population, they pay 14-15% of the county’s property taxes.

Bullock said the four mayors requested Manatee County help address the effects of tourism on the infrastructure of their barrierisland towns. The mayors’ point: Investing in this infrastructure would benefit the entire county financially in the long run.

After the presentation, Bullock said some county commissioners made this suggestion to the mayors: The barrier island communities should raise municipal property taxes on their residents and come back to the commission when they had “specific projects” in mind.

“Following that meeting, we didn’t feel much encouragement that we’re highly valued and worth investing in,” Bullock said.

Longboat Key is one of four Florida towns situated in two counties, and the largest by more than 2,000 residents. The town staff deals with a variety of issues related to the unusual geographic situation, including relations with two county commissions, elections offices and more. The residents deal with two county taxation plans and millage rates.

So, last month, Bullock told town commissioners he’s begun “looking into the two-county issue,” and commissioners gave him approval to keep going. The process would be long, he said, and ultimately require approval of both counties and the state Legislature. With his early 2018 retirement, it’s likely something his successor will have to continue.

“Our residents pay different tax rates in one county than the residents in another county pay,” Bullock told the commission.

“I’ve begun to look at the implications of all of this.”

Bullock said the town staff has analyzed aspects of the two counties, including property values and tax rates, and sent the study to both Manatee County and Sarasota County for review. As of May 26, Sarasota County officials had reviewed the study while Manatee County has not responded.

“This is not a sprint,” Bullock said. “This discussion will go on for awhile.”

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Island, a popular recreational area among Longboat residents and visitors. Greer Island is in Manatee, and he said the county’s resistance to funding improvements to the area, as well as other infrastructure, speaks volumes.

“A lot of taxes get paid by residents of Longboat Key. They deserve some return on that investment,” Bunting said. “You don’t ask a lot, but you don’t get anything.”

Bullock noted that the island of Longboat Key was divided before becoming a town in 1955.

“The county lines were clearly established for decades before Longboat Key was incorporated,” Bullock said.

Out of the nearly 7,000 permanent residents of the Key, 35% reside in Manatee County. About one-third of Key property values are located in Manatee County, Bullock said.

The town manager said some aspects of being within two counties have worked out smoothly, like the cooperation between the two public transportation systems, but Bullock mentioned a number of challenges as well.

For example, the Federal Emergency Management Agency conducts county-by-county damage assessments after strong storms.

So, Bullock said, a FEMA team will assess one county’s portion of the Key at one time, then come back weeks later with a different team to assess the other portion.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense,” Bullock said.

Bullock added that a potential benefit of becoming part of a single county is that the town would not need to use extra time and money to advertise public meetings in multiple newspapers.

The town manager also mentioned differences in the collection and use of impact fees in the two counties. Bullock said the town collects more impact fees in Sarasota County than Manatee County, noting that the study to implement a turn lane on Gulf of Mexico Drive for the Country Club Shores neighborhood has been funded by Sarasota fees.

Bullock also noted that Sarasota County has invested in making improvements to Bayfront Park, while Manatee County has not made any similar commitments.

“It’s just sort of a messy situation,” said Vice Mayor Ed Zunz.

Zunz noted there must be more research in exploring how much money residents contribute to each county and how much each county gives residents in return.

“It requires a lot more study,” Zunz said.

Mayor Terry Gans stressed the need for research, noting discussion of the topic could last years.

Gans said it remains undetermined whether Key residents in Manatee County have any desire to be part of Sarasota County, or vice versa. He also emphasized that the discussion is not meant to alarm officials of either county.

“This is not a move to get anybody’s attention,” Gans said.

“This is an accident of history.

Let’s explore where that accident has led us today.”

Construction remains stalled on The Shore restaurant because of design and structural changes, said Tom Leonard, who co-owns The Shore with John Mays.

Leonard said he is working out changes to the site plan with the town’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department. Leonard said he terminated his deal with KS Contracting Services about a month ago, though he would not say who the next contractor will be.

Because a new contractor will work on the site, Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray said a new permit will be required.

The site at 800 Broadway St. is the former location of Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant. It was purchased in June 2015 by Leonard and former partner Mark Caragiulo. Mays signed on as a partner later on. Construction stopped in February.

Caragiulo – a restaurateur behind such eateries as Veronica’s Fish and Oyster Bar, Caragiulo’s and Owen’s Fish Camp — was bought out of his share of The Shore restaurant brand, which includes a location at St. Armands Circle, by Leonard on April 13.

The Shore, a $4 million project, is expected to have 185 seats in the 7,000-square-foot facility with arena seating.

Leonard expects an opening in December or early January.

Bike incident suspect pleads not guilty

that critically injured a Nova Scotia man April 14 on Gulf of Mexico Drive pleaded not guilty, court records show.

Officers of the Longboat Key Police Department and Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28-year-old Michael James Rowe Jr. on April 14 on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.

The alleged hit-and-run occurred before 2 p.m. April 2 in the 4900 block of GMD. Police connected Rowe to a 2005 Dodge pickup described by a witness fleeing the scene without stopping to help bicyclist Mike MacCormick.

MacCormick was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton with critical injuries but has since improved.

Longboat names next public works director RESUME

Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa said Town Manager Dave Bullock did “a fantastic job” in selecting his replacement.

In a May 18 email, Town Manager Dave Bullock told members of the Town Commission he has chosen Isaac Brownman for the position.

Brownman has worked for Sarasota County for 17 years, currently as public works director and county engineer. As the county’s public works director, he oversees a department of more than 250 employees with an operating budget of $75 million.

“Isaac comes to us with good experience as an engineer, manager and public works director,” Bullock told commissioners.

According to Sarasota County, Brownman has served as county engineer since February 2016 and public works director since March 2014. He has also served as engineering supervisor and manager in the county’s Land Development Services Division, as well as the director of the Capital Projects Division.

In a statement, Brownman, 44, said he’s “very excited” about the opportunity to work with the town’s Public Works Department, noting that he’s enjoyed spend-

ing time on the Key and learning about Longboat’s history.

“I look forward to continuing to move essential public works functions and services forward in a positive direction,” Brownman said.

Brownman added that he expects to continue working with Sarasota County in his new role.

“There will always be areas of collaboration and support between the county and the Town of Longboat Key, and I am looking forward to being involved at those points,” Brownman said.

Bullock, who was Sarasota County’s administrator before coming to the Key, has known Brownman since he began working for the county in 2000. Bullock said he interviewed five applicants for the job, but Brownman was the “best, most qualified” candidate.

“He’s got the right mindset,” Bullock said.

Bullock said one of the reasons Brownman wanted to come to the Key was to work more closely with the people he serves, which can be challenging serving a county of hundreds of thousands of people.

He also said Brownman’s experience managing Sarasota County’s five-year $300 million capital improvement plan will be particularly useful in the townwide underground utilities project.

things he’s used to,” Bullock said.

Brownman will start with a yearly salary of $109,000. He currently makes $130,062 annually with the county.

In March, Florensa announced his retirement, which is scheduled for February. The town budgeted for an overlap in directors to help Florensa’s replacement.

Bullock said Brownman will begin his tenure with Longboat in August.

“I think the overlap is essential,

really,” Florensa said. “It makes everything transparent.”

In early May, Bullock announced his own plans to retire in January.

Florensa echoed the town manager’s sentiment that Brownman’s knowledge will benefit the town in completing the underground utilities project, which he said will be “complex, expensive and difficult at some locations.”

“He obviously has the project skills to take this to the next level,” Florensa said.

Sale pending for north-end gas station property LBK North had hoped to move a historic cottage from the former arts center site to the location on GMD. JOHN MCGUIRE STAFF WRITER

The closed gas station at 6990 Gulf of Mexico Drive, long considered an eyesore by residents of the north end and beyond, is under contract of sale, according to Longboat Key town staff and the real estate agent handling the property.

“The buyer intends to open another gas station and a restau-

rant,” said Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray. Ray said the town does not have any more information about the potential development of the site, which is located at the corner of Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway Street, including the identity of the buyer.

Tampa-based J.H. Williams Oil Co. owns the property, which it bought in August 2005 for

$512,100.

Mark Huber of Re/Max Alliance Group, the real estate agent overseeing the sale, said about 30 days remain in the contract period.

“It seems solid,” Huber said of the sale, adding that he could not divulge more information.

Since March, north end resident group LBK North has been petitioning for the town to relocate a historic cottage from the Center for the Arts, which is less than a mile away. Ringling College announced plans to sell the arts center property to a private developer in February. County records still list Ringling as the owner.

The arts center closed in May. LBK North members suggested the 0.39-acre, commercially zoned gas station property as a suitable location for the cottage, which was built in the 1930s as part of the Whitney Resort.

In April, Town Manager Dave Bullock said he would have the gas station property appraised to consider the site for relocation of the cottage. The plan was halted when town staff learned of the pending contract, Bullock said.

WHAT A DRAG 6:14 p.m. — 3300 block of GMD Civil Disturbance: Officers responded to a possible theft from a garage. Upon arrival, the caller showed the officers what appeared to be drag marks leading from the caller’s garage into the garage of a neighboring residence. The caller did not know what item had been removed. The caller said his estranged wife, with whom he is in divorce proceedings, was living at the neighboring residence.

The caller said he did not have a court order or legal document to prohibit his wife from entering the residence, which he co-owns with his wife. When an officer met with the estranged wife, she stated she did enter the garage to remove a decorative planter that she co-owns. With no protective orders against either party, police determined the matter to be a civil disturbance and closed the case.

A LITTLE TOO LATE 7:06 p.m. — 500 block of Putter Lane Public Service: A woman reported to police that her car had been stolen. She said that a man had been in possession of the car for two weeks. The man had since been arrested, she said, and she did not know where the car was.

Asked why she did not report the car as stolen sooner, she stated that friends of hers were attempting to get the car back for her. She said she contacted the agency that arrested the man about the car, but the agency was “less than helpful.” The officer advised the caller that, due to the nature of the delay, it appeared as though she was allowing the man to use her vehicle and police would not report the vehicle as stolen.

“It’s important to save those cottages,” Crews said. “It’s important to use them for a community purpose.”

In August 2016, the gas station property was one of eight adjoining properties considered in a referendum to allow Sarasota-based developer Floridays to apply for 105 additional units from a pool of 250 tourism units, which were approved by Key voters in 2008.

Floridays had proposed to build a 120-unit, four-story hotel on the adjoining properties.

The referendum was rejected by 78% of voters.

Raise the millage?

Sarasota County officials floated the idea last week of raising property taxes. They also agreed to pump $22 million into a stadium for the Atlanta Braves. Talk about a disconnection.

If you traveled the state and sat in on city and county commission meetings, one of the persistent themes in all local governments is finding the money to pay for everything they are involved in — without raising taxes.

You can debate the answers all day and night. You might start, for instance, with whether local governments wouldn’t have such insatiable appetites if they weren’t involved in so many things in which they shouldn’t be involved — say, like funding baseball stadiums; giving tax breaks to recruit businesses; affordable housing funds; or buying huge swaths of land for preservation. All debatable.

And there is hardly a municipality or county in Florida that isn’t grappling with paying millions of dollars a year out of its general fund to feed its underfunded pension system. Longboat Key is certainly among them, though not as bad off as many other jurisdictions. Nonetheless, every $1 million to cover pension benefits is $1 million not available for other uses.

Revenue sources are limited as well.

The primary funding methods for local governments are property taxes and debt. And every elected official who likes his position of power knows this truth: If you raise millage rates, for the most part, your career will be over.

It was no surprise then, that a few Sarasota County commissioners last week twitched and bristled when Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer and Chief Financial Management Officer Tom Botelho floated the idea of raising the county’s millage rate next fiscal year by 0.35 mills.

Harmer and Botelho, we’re guessing, were prepping commissioners for the day they present a firm detailed list of capital investments that are going to require more taxation.

So it’s the age-old government question: Where to find the money without raising taxes?

Here’s a thought: When we read last week that Sarasota County is preparing to provide $21.6 million toward a new stadium for the Atlanta Braves in North Port — all of which would come from the county’s tourist-development tax, it caught our attention.

Get a look at this — the growth in tourist-development taxes, also known as “bed taxes” on hotel rooms, in Sarasota County: 2009-10 $9,611,839 2010-11 $11,389,931 +18.5% 2011-12 $13,923,125 +22.2% 2012-13 $14,848,194 +6.6% 2013-14 $16,944,401 +14.1% 2014-15 $19,045,246 +12.4% 2015-16 $20,010,035 +5.5%

By state law, this money can be used only on tourism promotion, beach maintenance and renourishment, the arts, sports stadiums and the Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center (the rowing complex).

We can hear all of the arguments against diverting money away from tourism. But you can also make this argument: Creating trust funds and dedicated uses are tradeoffs for special interests. Sometimes, it’s just a fact some needs are more important than others. This is why we elect people: to make tough choices.

When you think about all local governments having problems funding infrastructures (roads, water, sewers), tourists play a big role in that equation. They use all of those.

This idea likely would go nowhere in Tallahassee; the special interests would kill it. But the laws restricting tourist-tax money uses should be broadened to allow other uses.

We are not cotton candy As the past weekend’s patriotic passions and gratitude for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice subside, perhaps we’ll help keep the patriotic flame alive with these excerpts from the commencement address of Defense Secretary James Mattis to the 2017 graduating class of West Point.

— Ed. I would never have imagined when I joined the military at age 18 that I’d be standing here, nor can you anticipate where you’ll be many years from now.

By the time this class was in first grade classrooms in every state in our union, our country had been thrust into a war by maniacs who thought by hurting us they could scare us. Well we don’t scare, and nothing better represents America’s awesome determination to defend herself than this graduating class.

Every one of you could have opted out. You’d grown up seeing the war on ’round-the-clock news. There was no draft. Colleges across this land would have moved heaven and earth to recruit you for schools that would never make such demands on you as West Point.

Today in honoring you graduates, in celebrating your achievements and giving thanks for your commitment, we can see clearly your role in our world.

You graduate the same week that saw the murder of 22 innocent young lives. Manchester’s tragic loss underscores the purpose for your years of study and training at this elite school. For today you join the ranks of those whose mission it is to guard freedom and to protect the innocent from such terror.

We must never permit murderers to define our time or warp our sense of the normal. You will drive home a salient truth: that free men and women will volunteer to fight, ethically and fiercely, to defend our experiment that we call, simply, “America.”

You graduates, commissioned today, will carry the hopes of our country on your young shoulders.

You now join the ranks of an Army at war. Your oath of office connects you to the line of soldiers stretching back to the founding of our country.

After four years at West Point, you understand what it means to live up to an oath; you understand the

commitment that comes with signing a blank check to the American people, payable with your life.

So long as our nation breeds patriots like you, defenders who look past the hot political rhetoric of our day and rally to our flag, that Army tradition of serving our country will never die. We in the Department of Defense recognize that there are a lot of passions running about in this country, as there ought to be in a vibrant republic. But for those privileged to wear the cloth of our nation, to serve in the United States Army, you stand the ramparts, unapologetic, apolitical, defending our experiment in self-governance, you hold the line.

Every soldier in your platoon will know your name. Your responsibility is to know them. Learn their hopes and dreams. Teach them the difference between a mistake and a lack of discipline. If your troops make mistakes, look in the mirror and figure out how to coach them better.

When destiny taps you on the shoulder and thrusts you into a situation that’s tough beyond words … when you’re sick and you’ve been three days without sleep … when you’ve lost some of your beloved troops and the veneer of civilization wears thin, by having lived a disciplined life, you’ll be able to reach inside and find the strength your country is counting on.

You are privileged to be embarking on this journey. You will learn things about yourself that others will never know.

We can see the storm clouds gathering. Our enemies are watching. They are calculating and hoping America’s military will turn cynical. That we will lose our selfless spirit. They hope our country no longer produces young people willing to shoulder the patriot’s burden, to willingly face danger and discomfort. By your commitment you will prove the enemy wrong.

We are not made of cotton candy.

You are a U.S. soldier, and you hold the line.

So, fight for our ideals and sacred things. Incite in others respect and love for our country and our fellow Americans, and leave this country greater and more beautiful than you inherited it, for that is the duty of every generation.

Advocacy of their agenda is paramount.

The Democratic Party, current party leaders and past candidates appear to be in a feeding frenzy for investigations and impeachment.

The Republican Party continues to flounder in attempts to govern.

Clearly, the American people are confused and angry.

Improving or reforming the media may be a lost cause; hopefully, the forces of competition will solve the problem for them. The two political parties should wake up; an internal, frank review of their current actions and emotions of both parties would reveal how far they have strayed from good governance and their pledge to serve the American people.

Internal political reform should replace political rebellion. The country deserves and requires nothing less.

CLAUDIA NORMANN SCOTT Claudia Scott, 64, of Longboat Key, died May 23.

She was born on June 21, 1952, in New Orleans. She was educated at St. Martins Episcopal School and Metairie Park Country Day School.

She attended the University of Texas. She was a member of the Junior League of New Orleans and was a maid in the courts of Rex and Acheans, which are part of New Orleans' annual Mardi Gras celebration.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Francis Scott; mother, Lucy Mason Barret; brother, Frank Barret Normann; and sister, Lucy Mason Normann.

BETSY ALTMAN

Betsy Altman, 90, of Duluth, Ga., died May 22.

She was an avid reader, bridge player, writer, golfer, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader and docent at the Smith House in Roswell, Ga. She loved cooking, traveling and teaching.

She was a charter member of the Christ Church of Longboat Key. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Murray; and sister, Carolyn Glenn.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Altman; son Doug Altman; daughters Nancy Beveridge, Carolyn Dailey and Dana Garrard; brother Bill Murray; sister-in-law Marilyn Gille; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Christ Church of Longboat Key, 6400 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

V. CAROL JORDAN

V. Carol Jordan, 91, of New London N.H., died May 22.

She was born in St. Louis and married William F. Jordan in 1946. In 1960, the couple moved to Concord, N.H., with

their young family.

Carol committed her time to family and community service. She was treasurer of The League of Women Voters, on the board of the Visiting Nurse Association, a member of the Junior Service League and president of the Concord Hospital Associates and Volunteers. She also served as a Girl Scout leader for six years.

For fun, she enjoyed skiing with her family in the winter and spending summers on Lake Sunapee.

During retirement, she and Bill moved to New London and divided their time between New Hampshire and Longboat Key. Carol was a congregant of St. Paul’s Church in Concord and St. Andrews in New London.

Throughout her life, she was passionate about family, books, current events and travel.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Bill.

She is survived by sons Stephen Jordan and James Jordan; daughter Julia Alexander and seven grandchildren.

STEPHEN H. MUNROE

Stephen Munroe, 69, of Sudbury, formerly, Andover, Mass., died April 28.

He was born on July 25, 1947, in Newton, Mass., to Guy and Anne Munroe. He was raised in Wellesley and graduated from Wellesley High School, New Preparatory School and Merrimack College.

He was president and CEO of Davis Sales, Associates Inc. for 45 years.

Much of Steve’s free time was spent attending sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He loved grilling on his deck and working on his and his children’s yards.

Stephen enjoyed the sum-

mer months at Danversport Yacht Club and loved listening to the Beach Boys while fishing and cruising around. During the winter, he vacationed on Longboat Key, where he and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed the company of many friends for more than 30 years.

Steve is survived by Barbara J. Munroe, his wife of more than 43 years; children Scott Munroe, Jennifer Stone, Megan Munroe and Alison Munroe; five grandchildren; brother Guy Munroe; nephew, Polly Furbush; and a Labradoodle named Penny.

CHARLOTTE PALEY Charlotte Paley, of Longboat Key, and formerly, Chestnut Hill, Mass., died May 20.

She was preceded in death by her husband Irving S. Paley.

She is survived by sons Jack and Martin; their spouses; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and siblings Marsha Malamud, Sarah Wolman, Samuel Karlin, Esther Miller and Henry Karlin.

Barbara Rodocker, 86, of Lakewood Ranch, died on May 10.

She was born in Lansing, Mich., to Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Swift.

She described herself as first a child of God, second as a mother and third as a business woman.

She was a real estate broker, general contractor, property appraiser and developer in Michigan.

In 1972, she moved to Longboat Key with her family where she became a leader in the

hotel industry for more than 40 years. She also represented independent hoteliers on the Tourist Development Council for Manatee County. She served in multiple positions within the Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island chambers of commerce.

Barbara was known for her sense of humor, love for life and storytelling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers James and Ivan Swift; niece Cheryl Swift and nephew Craig Swift.

She is survived by her children, Deanna Gardner, Scott Rodocker, Angela VanNortwick, Renee Nelson; their father Paul Richard Rodocker; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; siblings Treva Canfield, Forest Swift, Eleanor Rossow, Ruth Johnson, Charlene McCallum; and numerous in-laws, nephews and nieces.

RICHARD B. SMITH

Richard Smith, 89, of West Dennis, Mass., and Longboat Key, formerly Norfolk, died May 19.

He was born in Boston to Cora and Clinton Smith. He graduated from Needham High School and Dean Academy and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Babson College. He served with the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He owned and operated Franklin Lumber Co. from 1969-2000.

Richard was an active pilot for most of his life and enjoyed sailing, golf and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Smith; four children, Laura Smith, Jean Smith, Andy Smith and David Smith; six grandchildren; brother, Robert Smith; and four nieces and nephews.

She was born on Nov. 14, 1931, in Sellersville to Frederick and Victoria Richter.

She was involved with music starting at an early age and continued with it throughout her life.

In 1950, she married Gerald L. Snyder, and together, they raised three daughters.

In 1956, Josephine started working with a band known as “The Keynotes,” making TV and personal appearances and studio recordings.

Following her move from Pennsylvania to Florida, she worked with another band known as the D.R.’s.

She served as a church organist for several area Catholic churches including St. Joseph’s in Bradenton, St. Bernard’s in Holmes Beach and St. Mary, Star of the Sea, on Longboat Key. She was a musical director for the Riverfront Theater for 30 years and served in the same role for the Sarasota Players and Venice Little Theater.

Most recently, she appeared as the keyboardist for the group “Dreamclassics,” which was led by her husband, Gerry.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald; daughters Christine Lauen, Valerie Westfall and Monica Ballard; their spouses; five grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

s people began arriving at Amore Restaurant, Liana Vitorino had a mission.

She wanted them to have a final happy night in the restaurant’s location.

Vitorino, along with manager and husband Tito Vitorino and Amore owner Howard Rooks, invited guests for a farewell dinner May 26. Amore closed at the end of the night, but Rooks finalized a deal on a new Burns Court location earlier in the day. He looks forward to seeing familiar faces when the new location opens, hopefully on July 1.

But the Longboat Key location was home for so many.

Holly Hennessy called it the neighborhood “Cheers.” Jimmy Loftis said it was a place where everybody was happy. It was a place Murf Klauber and his friends visited each night during season.

“First of all, the building is the finest building on Longboat Key, and it is a model of what should be in the future,” Klauber said.

As Liana Vitorino continued to greet guests, she was given hugs and presents. She said some regulars were so regular she didn’t need a reminder to make a reservation for them.

“They became my family,” she said. “Hopefully they will have time to drive downtown and see me.”

And it wasn’t much easier for Rooks, who mingled among the crowd of about 170 people.

“Very mixed emotions,” he said. “I’m very excited about the new place. I will miss this because so many people loved this place, and so did I.” — KATIE JOHNS

he St. Armands Circle Association had plenty of business to take care of May 23.

But first came the cocktails and appetizers. As members gathered for the association’s annual meeting at the Harbourside Ballroom of the Longboat Key Club, they enjoyed a cocktail hour before the meeting was called to order.

The meeting’s agenda included a report from Executive Director Diana Corrigan, a formal presentation of the association’s new website, officer elections and awards and special recognitions.
