The town is considering new rules on temporary signs, but, heeding a Supreme Court ruling on sign regulations, is avoiding the issue of content.

A 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision continues to limit enforcement of Longboat Key’s sign code, and Planning and Zoning Board Chairwoman B.J. Bishop wants to make sure residents, business

owners and real estate agents know about how the town’s rules will be changing.

“We need to be sure the word gets out,” Bishop said. “The suggested sign code will impact most of the businesses in Longboat Key, especially the real estate community.”

The town is hosting an open house regarding proposed changes to the sign code from 10 a.m. to noon June 13 at Town Hall.

In the case Reed v. Town of Gilbert, the U.S. Supreme Court deemed regulation of signs based on content to be unconstitutional. The decision has prompted municipalities across the country to rework their sign codes.

After discussing the ruling at a September 2015 meeting, the Town Commission instructed town staffers to cease all enforcement of content-based regulations for proposed signs. Since then, town staff has concluded that minor adjustments to the code wouldn’t adequately comply with the Supreme Court’s decision, prompting a project to overhaul the rules.

At the May 15 Planning and Zoning Board meeting, members considered new language in the code relating to temporary signs, such as real estate signs and election signs, along with those connected with construction projects, garage sales, special events and coming-soon projects.

As those regulations are content-based, Town Planner Maika Arnold presented the board with a more minimalistic option.

Staff recommendations included allowing properties the following:

n One 2-square-foot sign at any time. n One 4-square-foot sign when the property is for sale. n An additional 2-square-foot sign to advertise an open house for a property.

“We’re regulating the time, place and manner,” Arnold said.

Board member Phill Younger argued that the recommendations still remained too contentbased, and suggested language that would allow for two temporary signs at any time — one at 2 square feet, one at 4 square feet.

Designating “for sale” or “open house’’ signs could still run afoul of the high court’s ruling prohibiting content-based regulations.

“If they want to put a 4-foot sign that says either Phill Younger is the greatest or worst person in the world, I don’t care,” Younger said. “If it’s 4 feet, that’s fine.”

In the end, the board directed town staff to move forward with Younger’s suggested language.

Bishop said she hopes the sign code ordinance will be on the agenda and ready for action at the June 20 Planning and Zoning Board meeting, one week after the sign code open house.

echnology is only one piece of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Sarasota-Manatee Barrier Islands Traffic Study.

But, according to the project manager of FDOT’s consulting company, it’s the most powerful.

“Knowledge is power,” Frank Domingo said Tuesday, launching the early stages of the longawaited look at traffic, how it flows and how to improve it from the south end of Lido Key, through Longboat Key to the northern tip of Anna Maria Island.

“Better use of technology is absolutely key,’’ he said.

In its examination of traffic patterns, along with access to the islands along State Road 64, Cortez Road and the John Ringling Parkway, Domingo said FDOT will use “origin-destination data” from Bluetooth-enabled devices, like cellphones and laptop computers, to analyze where people are coming from, where they are going, how long they are staying and more. Siesta Key is not included.

“This is a newer technology that allows you to set better trends and get really usable data,” Domingo said, speaking before about 50 people at the first steering committee meeting for the study, which was held Tuesday at Longboat Key Town Hall.

The study will also assess public transit services, event operations, and the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists, Domingo said.

Parking-related solutions to traffic problems also will be explored, Domingo said, mentioning the possibility of “ParkN-Ride” locations, allowing motorists to park on the mainland and shuttle to the islands.

He also discussed the possibility of using a combination of parking sensors and smartphone apps to alert drivers when parking on the islands is unavailable.

Traffic on Longboat Key and the other barrier islands is a perennial gripe of residents and government leaders alike to the

point of spawning ideas generated by residents, such as those on the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force.

Some small victories have taken place, such as traffic-light timing changes on the mainland and a focus on keeping intersections clear.

At least four previous traffic studies have been done since 2005, looking at a variety of issues.

Tom Freiwald, the Revitalization Task Force chairman, said the most important aspect of the new study is making sure recommendations will be implemented.

“That always seems to be the weakness of past traffic studies,” he said. “We never seem to get to the point of implementation.”

Freiwald said he hopes the study’s steering committee will assign responsibility and accountability for changes.

“Only then will the study be worthwhile,” he said. “Without that, it will just be another study.”

Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock has long been a proponent of the new FDOT study, and said he’s enthusiastic about its start.

“Let’s get it going,” he said.

The FDOT study of barrier island traffic is designed in three parts, with the ultimate goal of specific recommendations by fall 2018. Data from the 2018 wintervisitor season will be captured and factored into the final report.

The three phases of the study: Phase 1: Review of available studies and transportation plans regarding the barrier islands to compile a summary of recommendations. Domingo said many of these previous efforts are still relevant.

Phase 2: Make observations and collect traffic data.

Phase 3: Complete a transportation management plan and recommend improvements.

Public meetings and involvement will be a major portion of the study, Domingo said. He added that FDOT expects to complete Phase 1 by the end of this summer.

FDOT officials expect the study to cost $675,000. In September 2016, the state approved funding 80% of the study, while the MPO will cover the remaining 20%.

Here is a sample: n “Longboat Key Bridge Analysis Status Report,” 10 pages, prepared in 1980 by the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Planning Organization, referencing a 1973 FDOT feasibility study and discussions in the late 1970s. Suggestion: Build a bridge over Sarasota Bay at roughly mid-Longboat Key. Cost estimated then at $40 million.

n “Water Taxi Feasibility Study,” 31 pages, prepared in 2005 by Renaissance Planning Group for the Sarasota/Manatee MPO. Recommended: Begin pilot water taxi service in Sarasota, with connections between the downtown area, Longboat Key, Mote Marine Laboratory and possibly Siesta Key at a cost then of $2 million for a system of three routes and seven boats operating 12 hours a day all week.

n “Development of Effective Strategies to Alleviate Traffic Congestion for the Barrier Islands,” 86 pages, prepared in 2007 by the Center for Urban Transportation Research for the Town of Longboat Key, with funding assistance from Sarasota County and Manatee County. Recommended: Alleviate traffic congestion at St. Armands Circle by establishing North Adams Drive and Madison Drive as an alternate route.

Ease traffic congestion near the Gulf Drive and Cortez Road intersection by increasing northbound capacity of the mini-roundabout on Gulf Drive at Bridge Street.

n “Transportation Analysis for an Additional Bridge to Longboat Key,” prepared in 1991 by the Sarasota/Manatee MPO. Recommended: New bridges to Longboat Key are not warranted. Upgrade turn lanes and traffic signals at intersection of Gulf of Mexico Drive and Longboat Club Drive.

n “Mobility 2035, LongRange Transportation Plan,” 241 pages, prepared in 2010 by Renaissance Planning Group for the Sarasota/Manatee MPO. Amended in January 2014. Recommended: Strategic direction for how MPO, member agencies and partners will achieve mobility and accessibility goals over 25 years. Prioritizes transportation projects and costs.

n “Regional Park-and-Ride Strategic Implementation Plan,” 142 pages, prepared in 2013 by Renaissance Planning Group for the Sarasota/Manatee MPO. Recommended: Named 16 park-and-ride locations as priority sites for development.

f you’ve been to a recent town meeting, you’ve probably heard of Pete and Carla Rowan. The Longbeach Village residents in 2013 formed resident group Save the Longbeach Village to oppose expansion plans for Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub. In 2016, the Rowans formed the larger Keep Longboat Special, which the couple colloquially calls “Keep.”

While the organization was formed to oppose a referendum that would have allowed Floridays Development Co. to develop a 120-room hotel on the north end, Keep Longboat Special has since been involved in discussions on a number of Key issues, including redevelopment of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort property and preserving the town’s 30-foot height limit for single-family homes.

When Keep began, the couple had roughly 250 members on its distribution list. It’s now up to about 1,400.

We caught up with the Rowans to talk about some Longboat issues.

Your group was instrumental in opposing a referendum that would have allowed a 120room hotel to be built on the north end. Is there anything you would like to see done there now?

Pete: We’d like to see something there. The land is worth a lot more residential, it’s not worth that much (commercially). The rents are minimal. There is too much commercial property, but it has to go to referendum. We would support it being residential, but I can’t see how people are going to vote for that because they go to places like Longbeach Cafe and Bayou Tavern. You’re losing all these things that you’re using.

Carla: Ever since ... Longboat Key voted for having a commercial center where Publix is now ... The year after that happened, (Whitney Plaza) couldn’t survive anymore. It’s dying.

If a few lots, like the gas station, the bank and the wooded area there were made commercial and viable, and the rest of it was made residential, the north end could support a lesser plaza than the one that is there.

You’ve been critical of Longboat Key’s tourism unit pool.

Can you tell me about that?

Pete: That was created in 2008, when we were in a recession. I’m sure I voted for that referendum.

Pete: Hard codes are good because the builder doesn’t think he can negotiate everything. And once one builder negotiates something as a special exception, the next builder says, “Hey, wait a minute …”

Carla: Knowing what the rules are makes for a peaceful community. Right now there’s a lot of anxiety on this key. People are worried about home and building sizes.

Would you consider any exceptions to the height limit?

Like a hearing process among neighboring residents if a property owner wants an addon?

Carla and Pete Rowan formed Keep Longboat Special in 2016.

Carla: We were all for it. The idea was to allow older properties to redevelop. It wasn’t meant to have (the units) handed out in great big quantities to build some brand-new thing.

Pete: The Colony is after them, and the Zota has got 85 of them, so it’s (acting as an incentive to) these massive developments and hotel complexes. It’s not what I think the residents want on Longboat.

Carla: What happens to the place that’s 50 years old and needs to redevelop to be sustain-

able? Now you’ve given them all away to only a few big developers. I don’t believe that was the intent (of the referendum).

What other aspects of the way Longboat handles tourism do you think need to be reconsidered?

Carla: Another is the 80/20 residential to tourist guideline (included in the proposed planned-unit development ordinance). We know that the tourist end of that ratio does not take into account 30-day rentals, which we have a lot of in the

wintertime for sure, and the new way of renting things online: Airbnb. That’s not in there. So how do we know what makes up that 20%? It could very well already be there.

They need to define what that 20% is before that 20% becomes 50% and then you’ve got 50/50 residential on a residential island.

You’ve been vocal opponents of the town allowing exceptions to the 30-foot-aboveelevation height limit for single-family homes. Why?

Carla: That special exception process, I personally think it’s a good one. If you want to do whatever it is you’re proposing to do, you’re required to notify everyone from the perimeter of your property who falls within 500 feet. That’s quite a ways. In The Village, it’s a lot. It involves a lot of people.

Everybody has to be OK with it, and it does mean everybody. If you have one who says, “Oh no, I don’t want to look out my front door and see that.” Even if it’s 500 feet away, then it’s a no-go.

If you want to be a beach bum and live in The Village, somebody else shouldn’t be saying anything about it. If you want to live in other communities, a golfing community or a tennis community or condos … if you have found your place, then you shouldn’t be feeling threatened that the rules are going to change on you. That’s why we’re so closely watching.

Lido hotel plans draw questions Although residents aren’t objecting to plans to redevelop the Sandcastle Resort at Lido Beach, they have some concerns about the impact on traffic and more.

Last week, residents such as Morris shared their thoughts on the proposed redevelopment of the Sandcastle Resort on Lido

Beach with the property owners.

Delray Beach-based Ocean Properties plans to replace the 1950s building with 110-foot towers with 304 hotel rooms.

The existing property, located at 1540 Benjamin Franklin Drive, is four stories tall and has 176 rooms. For Morris and others, the scope of the project stood out.

“As I look north now, I have a

crystal-clear view of the entire Lido public beach,” Morris said at the May 16 meeting. “If your building goes up to the full extent you’re discussing, that view of Lido Beach will be wiped out.

That will be a loss of enjoyment for me. Who knows what it’ll do to my property value.”

Ocean Properties Vice President Mark Walsh said the plans are in line with the height of other buildings in the area, including the Lido Regency and the RitzCarlton Beach Residences. The proposal calls for a building with a slender, curved profile, similar to the company’s Opal Sands Resort in Clearwater Beach.

Residents also asked what the increased size of the hotel would mean for traffic in the area. Walsh pointed out the land is zoned for a residential multifamily building, and said a hotel would generate less vehicular traffic than a condominium. The Sarasota City Commission will eventually need to approve a rezoning application for the hotel project to move forward.

The redevelopment will also include about 20,000 square feet of restaurant, ballroom and meeting space. Although a traffic study is ongoing, Walsh doesn’t expect the project to noticeably add to congestion in the area, even during season.

“This is not going to change the traffic one way or another to any great extent,” Walsh said.

Other residents at last week’s workshop praised the proposed design and concept for the hotel redevelopment. Carl Shoffstall, president of the Lido Key Residents Association, said the changes would represent an upgrade from the dated Sandcastle building.

He also was enthusiastic about the project bolstering the island’s supply of hotel rooms.

“We need this,” Shoffstall said.

“We’ve lost over 400 rooms since I’ve been out here in hotel space.”

Walsh said Ocean Properties plans to make the Sandcastle a four-star hotel or better, promising residents a high-end final product. All of the rooms will include a waterfront view. Walsh said the company is positioning the Sandcastle as the nicest hotel in the area. Ocean Properties intends to continue to own and manage the property postredevelopment.

“We understand what would be successful here, and we’ve come up with a design that we think fits the site and fits the market for the long term,” Walsh said.

Bruce Franklin, a planner working with Ocean Properties, said the group expects to file a formal site plan within four to six months. In addition to the rezoning application, Sarasota will need to approve a major conditional use for the restaurant, meeting space and recreational facility, which will offer rentals of nonmotorized watercraft.

If Ocean Properties gains the necessary approvals, the project could be complete by 2019.

Residents of nearby properties, including the Orchid Beach Club and Mark Twain Condos, encouraged Walsh to continue engaging with the Lido community as plans progress.

“I’m hoping — given the size of property you have — we can work together to mitigate the concerns the residents have and still make your project a very great addition to our beach,” said Mark Twain resident Pat Ludwig.

Progress on roads Thanks to persistent efforts from a few engaged Longboat Key residents, the mayor and town manager, FDOT is ‘doing more than lip service.’ ‘We have to keep on them,’ Terry Gans says.

A

ll in all: Whew! The 2017 winter season traffic was not as bad as it was in 2016. As Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans told us recently: “We had a bit of a breather this year.”

After that horrible 2016 season, Longboaters went into this past winter with dread, expecting another maddening season of daily backups stretching from each end of the Key and meeting in the middle — with no one doing a thing about them.

But suffering through 2016 had its salutary effects. It mobilized Longboat Key citizens and the Town Commission and administration — in particular, Tom Freiwald and Lenny Landau of the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force and Mayor Gans and Town Manager David Bullock.

They went on the offense, nearly relentlessly to spark action from the Florida Department of Transportation.

And it worked. Special recognition to Freiwald and Landau; they’re proof that, as frustrating as it may be, with persistence you can make government responsive.

In fact, we’ll agree with Mayor Gans’ assessment: “I’m pleased, even though we don’t see additional lanes and bridges,” Gans told us last week. “FDOT is paying attention and doing more than lip service. I think we made progress.”

But the mayor also adds this

pragmatic assessment: “Sincerity is measured by what they do.”

As everyone knows, FDOT operates in years, not days, weeks or months.

Gans said he is hoping FDOT will complete the addition of a continuous right-turn lane on northbound U.S. 41 at Fruitville Road over the summer.

But when you examine FDOT’s project lists online, they say the expected completion dates for two studies — one for the GulfstreamU.S. 41 intersection and one for the Fruitville-U.S. 41 intersection — won’t be until December and January, respectively. Those are just the studies, not the actual road work.

Meantime, at one of the main choke points for the north end of the Key — the intersection of 119th Street West on Cortez Road in Bradenton — FDOT officials told a crowd of about 100 residents last week changes to that intersection likely wouldn’t begin until 2019.

At the same time, Gans was not all that sanguine about the city of Sarasota’s commitment to being a regional player in transportation.

Unfortunately, the city hasn’t made a final decision on the idea to narrow Fruitville Road to two lanes between Central and Orange avenues. Thankfully, though, Gans said, “They don’t have the money to do it.”

What’s next? Said Gans: “We won’t drop the ball. We have to keep on them.”

Don’t let up.

What about the Christians?

What is a public high school principal to do?

Put yourself in those shoes.

Every high school principal’s students see the world roiling. Go down the list — terrorism; immigration; assaults on freedom of speech and religion; racial and religious wars; the strident clashing — sometimes physically — of political philosophies; ad infinitum.

And in the halls of an American high school, it’s most likely a cultural melting pot, a mimic of society at large.

Perhaps its own cultural tinder box.

How do you keep it from exploding?

One of the standard answers in this PC era is to teach our youth to “celebrate our diversity” and “embrace our differences.”

At Pine View School in Sarasota, Stephen Covert, the principal, says one of the missions is to teach the students without indoctrinating or advocating. “We are very mindful of educating without advocating,” he told us.

To help navigate this minefield of cultural IEDs, Pine View, which is one of Sarasota County’s top-performing elementary, middle and high schools, has what it calls a “Sensitivity Education Team,” consisting of high school students and faculty. Recently, the team scheduled a panel discussion on “cultural sensitivity” for the school’s ninth through 11th grade classes.

Turns out, the sensitivity team wasn’t as sensitive as it should be. The Sarasota County School District has postponed the session for next fall.

Here’s why: In a letter to parents announcing the panel discussion (see letter), Covert said the sensitivity team had been working with speakers from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; the Islamic Society of Sarasota; the Jewish Federa-

tion of Sarasota; and ALSO Youth, a support organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning intersex and asexual youth (LGBTQIA).

But when some parents read the letter, they saw the obvious omission.

One parent wrote to School Board member Bridget Ziegler:

IT’S WORTH A TRY Leave it to former Longboat Key Town Commissioner Phill Younger to challenge the status quo.

As a member of the Longboat Key Charter Review Committee, Younger recently proposed a charter amendment that might entice more people to run for the Town Commission.

Younger’s idea is to reduce the number of town voting districts from five to four and increase the number of at-large commission seats from two to three.

As you would expect from Younger, he has data. They show more contested elections for the at-large seats than for the district seats since 2000.

Skeptics worry one tight-knit area of the town could elect as many as four commissioners and skew the commission’s decisions toward itself.

Highly unlikely. Longboat voters would smell the rat.

But then, it also could turn out four of the best people for the commission could live in the same district. If they showed favoritism, it wouldn’t last long. Voters would throw the rats out.

Give it a try. Quit doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

“We are thrilled that our daughter will be participating in this discussion; however, we believe that open dialogue would be inclusive of all religions/faiths. Our country was founded on Christian principles, and we do not feel that omitting Christianity from the panel discussion is educating students of all cultural differences. It seems a bit like reverse discrimination, and Christian stereotypes should be part of the discussion.”

Early in Dr. Stuart Mushlin’s career in private practice, a patient came in with a hard-topinpoint illness.

After days of poring over volumes in the local hospital’s research library and sleeping in the patient’s room to get a better sense of his symptoms, he discovered the patient needed plasmareplacement therapy for what

was then called Moschcowitz syndrome, a rare condition that affects blood coagulation.

Six months later, when Mushlin learned his patient hadn’t begun paying his medical bills, Mushlin asked him about his payment plans.

The man explained he had spent every insurance check at the race track, betting on “ponies.”

It’s this story and others that Mushlin compiled into his book “Playing the Ponies and Other

people, not in terms of their illnesses but in terms of their character. Because of that, his book has two purposes. “[There were] a lot of these vivid people, and some of them coincidentally had very strange illnesses or illnesses I couldn’t figure out,’’ he said. “So the second part of the book, parallel to the description of the character, was what these people taught me about practicing medicine, the mistakes I made and acknowledge in the book, the things I learned over time about dealing with people or dealing with their families or understanding what their expectations were.”

The book is full of stories of Mushlin stumbling upon the correct answer. He hopes people read between the lines and get a deeper understanding of his stories.

“I hope it says a lot about being there for your patients, being persistent, to not giving up, trying to get the right answers, if not immediately right away, and I’ve made mistakes in my life,” he said.

As for those mistakes, he’s embarrassed to admit them, but he wants his students to know they’ll make mistakes, too. He said some students get a sense of being invulnerable when attending the top medical schools. “... [B]ut life will happen to you and even with the best of intentions, you’ll screw up and you have to be able to acknowledge it,” he said. “You have to be able to be humble and you have to make sure your focus is on the patient in front of you. If you do that, you’ll be able to look yourself in the mirror every day and say, ‘I may not be perfect, but I’m a reasonably capable doctor.’”

Dr. Stuart Mushlin is on faculty at Harvard Medical School, but the patients he’s met have taught him more than any other research could.

“I learned something,” Mushlin said. “I thought I was pretty clever figuring out what he had, and all he could process was how lousy his life was, and he didn’t give a hoot about me or my brilliance, and so that’s playing the ponies.”

Mushlin is an academic physician. He hoped to be an English professor, but when the draft for the Vietnam War began, he applied for medical school.

Because of his atypical path to medical school, he got few interviews, but some of the better schools were interested because he was different. He went to Cornell University. Today, he is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School but does research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

After his training at Brigham and Women’s, Mushlin moved to private practice. After 16 years, he realized how much he missed academia and switched back.

Now he teaches physicians-intraining, emphasizing that it’s never about them. It’s always about the patient.

“You’re used to doing very well on tests. You’re used to getting the right answers, and what that tends to do is devise you from the reality the patient is feeling,” Mushlin said.

Mushlin, a Longboat winter resident, said his book is something that was inside of him, a notion he thinks artists can understand. He said the full concept came about because as an English major, he read novels such as “Great Expectations” and “A Tale of Two Cities” with amazing characters. When he became a physician, he met interesting

Gulfshore resident captures memories Don Whiston penned a book about his life, but now he wants to talk about other people.

or 15 months, Don Whiston kept a notebook next to his bed. He filled it between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

He wasn’t testing his sleep patterns or recording dreams. He was writing a book.

“Well, that is when your mind is clearer, and things I hadn’t really thought about popped up,” Whiston said.

At 87, Whiston wanted somewhere to put his memoirs. Whiston’s first book, “Winning Silver,” is something of a tribute to his life — one that he calls crazy. From his family life to his time at the Winter Olympics to his financial career, the book is a track of his successes and challenges.

“My life has so much to it,” he said. “It’s almost impossible to put it all together.”

Still, he wrote a 142-page book that begins with the story of his parents, sisters and early life.

From there, we learn about his childhood at Little Neck, a peninsula off Great Neck in Ipswich, N.J. In Chapter Three, Whiston shares the story of his journey to Oslo, Norway, and the 1952 Winter Olympics, where he helped the U.S. hockey team win silver as a goaltender.

“Hockey shaped my whole life, and the Olympics gave me a chance to dream an impossible dream,” he wrote in the book.

In 1951, Whiston, now 89, was asked to try out for the Olympic team. He was newly married to his late wife, Marie, and just beginning his professional career at a Boston investment firm, but he couldn’t turn down the opportunity.

“I grew up on the ponds,” he said. “I had a pair of skates when I was 5, but there was no formal hockey. There was in the high school I went to, and I played there. That’s where my career started.”

Before the Olympics, the team

played 53 games in Europe and the United States in 45 days. The team placed second in Norway that year, finishing behind Canada.

Following the Olympics, Whiston coached for three seasons at Brown University, his alma mater, and had a long financial career,

Don Whiston won a silver medal on the U.S. hockey team during the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway. But, he can’t point to that as his biggest accomplishment.

It’s these stories and memories of his life that Whiston captures

in his autobiography. “When I think of my life, I think “Oh jeez, why was I selected to do all these things?’” Whiston said.

But aside from his life, he wants to capture stories of other people.

The eighth chapter of his “Winning Silver” book is dedicated to Longboat Key and the Gulfshore community.

Whiston used to visit Sarasota as a kid because his father was a

big Boston Red Sox fan. The team held spring training there from 1933 to 1942. In 1948, his parents bought a mobile home at Gulfshore, and Whiston kept the trailer when his father died. Now, at 89, Whiston is the second-oldest resident at Gulfshore.

In the book, he talks of the people he’s met and how they gather around an oak tree most nights to catch up. It’s a refuge for him.

Now, he’s looking to pay tribute to the community.

“I’m attempting to write a book, another book, on Gulfshore,” he said. “The irony of that is Gulfshore is unique itself. I don’t think people realize what it is. I call it an aberration.”

Longboat Key police seek information on battery suspect Witnesses said the person of interest battered a protester near the Longboat Key Club.

Officers of the Longboat Key Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying someone they call a “person of interest” in an investigation of a reported battery that occurred during a political protest.

The incident took place around 5:15 p.m. on May 14, outside of the Longboat Key Club at the 200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Other protests have taken place at the site, which is near the home of U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan.

According to the police report, witnesses said the woman, seen in a cellphone photo released by police, and a man battered a female protester.

The protest was “staged at the last moment for a political cause” concerning President Donald Trump and health care, the police report states.

Witnesses said the man and woman sought by police approached protesters at the corner of GMD and Longboat Club Road from the parking lot of the Chart House restaurant.

When the woman entered into a conversation with one witness, the victim began recording the man and woman with her phone, which “apparently angered them, causing the situation to intensify,” the report states.

According to witnesses, the man and woman took the victim’s phone and threw it, and the man grabbed the victim during the altercation, the report reads.

One witness reported that the man and woman might have left the scene in a red truck, which was heading southbound on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“The victim did not complain of injuries and refused medical assistance,” the report states.

ARLENE MARTHA GILL

BEVERLY ANN DOUGLASS

She was born on May 14, 1934, at a Red Cross outpost near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada.

In 1962, she married Dublinborn and -educated Irish immigrant John A. Gill whom she met after he emigrated to British Columbia in 1959 and later moved to Calgary, Alberta.

In Calgary, Arlene worked in the corporate offices of TransCanada Pipelines where she supervised gas transmission and control measurement.

They later moved to southwestern Ontario, where Arlene was a dedicated spouse, homemaker, mother and corporate hostess for 26 years. Later, when their sons were completing their higher education, Arlene and John moved to Baltimore County, Md. During John’s retirement they traded snow shovels for sand shovels and moved to Longboat Key for 15 years. There, Arlene was a parishioner of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church and an active and organizing member of The Longboat Key Club’s Key Niners Golf Association.

Arlene suffered severe juvenile-onset rheumatoid arthritis but countered it with determination and persistence. She will be remembered for her grace, calm demeanor and genuine and dedicated spirit.

She is survived by her husband, John; sons Paul and Glen; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; and granddaughter Fiona.

A memorial service will be held at noon on June 11 at All Angels Episcopal Church, 563 Bay Isles Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation at www. lymphoma.org.

She was born on Jan. 20, 1927, in Galena, Ill. She spent many family holidays and vacations in Galena throughout her life.

Her family moved to Detroit when she was young, and she spent most of her life there until she married Howard Faull in 1976 and moved to Longboat Key. In 1988, Howard died, and in 1994 Beverly married D. Ray Douglass and relocated to Bradenton. She and Ray lived in the El Conquistador neighborhood before moving to Freedom Village in 2004.

During her time at El Conquistador, she was an avid golfer with the “Niners.”

Beverly was a senior buyer at Saks Fifth Avenue and assistant to the president of Mercy College. She was also a volunteer at various places including Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, IMG Academy Golf Club and Westminster Presbyterian Community Church.

She is survived by her two children, Susan Goodman and Charles Faull; their spouses; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Memorial donations can be made to The Freedom Village Scholarship Fund, 6406 21st Ave. W., Bradenton, FL 34209.

Rainy weather doesn’t ruin the party at St. Armands Seafood and Music Festival.

he looming rain seemed to hold off long enough for the St. Armands Seafood and Music Festival to make its grand debut.

The festival began May 20. As local bands, such as Kettle of Fish and Twinkle and Rock Soul Radio, performed, festivalgoers sampled seafood bites from local restaurants including Walt’s Fish Market, Duval’s, Daiquiri Deck and Surf Shack.

Ron Soto of the Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association said the two-day event was going well as of Saturday evening.

“For an event that’s done off-season, look at this crowd,” he said.

Attendees felt similarly. Jean Fox, Barb Patterson and Jackie Visnic, who said they would attend the festival again, said the event attracted some people from Lakewood Ranch.

Charmia Dixon and her friends Kimberly Rainey and Vickie Humphrey found the music to be a high point.

“We’re having a fun time,” Dixon said. “The music’s great.

They’re rocking it.”

A day on the bay

I

t was anchors aweigh last month for the students of St. Mary Academy.

About 40 students spent the day at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron learning basic sailing skills. The students were split into four groups and divided the day into four 30-minute stations. Students learned how to tie knots and sail on a catamaran, rode along with the Sarasota Police Department water patrol and tried out a Sunfish sailing simulator.

After the activities, the students ate lunch and received certificates.
