Though on a different continent and different court surface, the tennis players of the Longboat Key Club Tennis Gardens put together their own Wimbledon tournament on June 28. Over a dozen players dressed in their finest tennis whites and gathered on the clay courts (rather than Wimbledon’s famous lawns) for a round robin tournament with touches of England.

Once play concluded for the day, everyone met up at the Spike and Tees restaurant for lunch.

VALUES REBOUND Longboat Key’s yearto-year property tax values have rebounded after falling last year for the first time since 2013. On July 1, the Property Appraisers Offices in Sarasota and Manatee counties provided the town with its certified taxable values.

Longboat Key’s 2021 certified values show a 5.99% increase in combined taxable values between Sarasota and Manatee counties. The increase is larger than June’s projection of a 5.37% increase.

During fiscal year 2022, the town is projected to collect $13,139,051 in ad valorem taxes.

The revenue typically makes up about three-fourths of the total revenue the town collects each fiscal year. The fiscal year 2022 total is an increase of $740,866 compared to the previous fiscal year.

The changes took effect immediately.

Normally, an ordinance requires two public hearings and votes to approve. However, commissioners felt the need to address northend residents’ recent complaints about the loud music coming from boats.

An emergency ordinance requires two-thirds support or five commissioners’ votes for approval.

Vice Mayor Mike Haycock did not attend Friday’s meeting.

At-Large Commissioner BJ Bishop asked whether state wildlife officers and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office could help with enforcement of the town’s emergency ordinance.

Just in time for the July 4 weekend, the Longboat Key Town Commission passed an emergency ordinance aimed at curtailing loud music from boats moored around Jewfish Key and northend beaches.

“I have seen a model of something similar in different jurisdictions in the state when we reached out to other communities,” Mooney said. “So, there will be further dialogue on that point.”

Mayor Ken Schneier mentioned several other possibilities that town leaders are examining to address the north-end problems.

It includes the possibilities of signs along the shore, consideration of dredging away sandbars that attract crowds near Jewfish Key and enforcing boat speed in the area.

“This is an ongoing project to try to do more to resolve the issue that we know is prevalent at the north end, especially during the summer and on weekends,” Schneier said.

The commission is scheduled to meet next on Sept. 13.

Home, safe, home The deadly Surfside collapse has Longboat condo owners looking into precautions they should take.

Ed Krepela is confident in his fellow board members at Fairway Bay making the right decisions.

“We’ve always had good leadership from the time I got here, and I’ve been on the board now — oh, gosh — longer than I probably should be,” Krepela said of the governing board of his complex, the Atrium.

The Atrium features two identical five-story buildings, which were built in the late 1980s. Over the years, issues have cropped up there, but Krepela and former Mayor George Spoll, who lives at Fairway Bay I, said they were quickly addressed by the board.

“It’s clear that the Atrium, which is the third phase of Fairway Bay, had some substantial cracks years ago, and they were responsible in fixing it,” Spoll said.

June’s collapse of a 13-story condo tower in Surfside killed at least 27 people with dozens of others still unaccounted for. It’s led condominium complexes and associations across the state to begin examining what precautionary steps to take to ensure residents’ safety. The town of Longboat Key issued a message on June 25 to condominium boards, managers and residents, urging attention to maintenance issues, even ones that might seem small now.

Most of Longboat Key’s housing stock is made up of condominiums built before the 1980s.

About 72% of the available housing stock is more than 25 years old and nearly half of the island’s housing was built more than 35 years ago, according to Town Finance Director Susan Smith’s annual financial report.

Even though George Spoll’s tenure on the Town Commission ended in March, he still leads the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force and he serves on the board of directors for the Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums.

Given the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, Longboat Key condos must deal with the effects of saltwater oxidation and corrosion.

“What works inland doesn’t work along the coasts when it comes corrosion and saltwater effects,” Krepela said.

It has prompted Spoll to contact Longboat Key’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department to learn more about the town’s procedures in the building process. Spoll leads the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force and serves on the board of directors for the Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums.

“I am concerned and want to find out as to what procedures exist in the inspection process during construction, because the very issue that you’re talking about begins much earlier than the ownership and maintenance required by the condominium,” Spoll said. “And, what is obvious, if the building is not built properly in the first place, it is doomed to be the very problem that we’re

seeing over on the East Coast, and that may or may not be part of the contributing factor in what happened there.”

Authorities are still determining what caused the Surfside collapse.

Spoll’s expertise as a builder dates back to his professional career. He also served as a member of the Building, Standards and Review Commission of the town of West Hartford, Connecticut.

Spoll mentioned how the Surfside collapse brings about attention to greater problems than the short-term fix of requiring regular inspections.

“In our case, what’s so, so important is the rise in sea level may well change the ability of the supports under the building, and we have to contend with that,”

Spoll said.

Sea Gate Club resident and civil engineer Graham Toft moved to Longboat Key in 2002. Even though Sea Gate was constructed in 1972, Toft said he’s confident the condominium’s leadership is keeping residents safe.

“We’re fortunate in the sense that seven years ago, we began to be aware of the fact that the building was aging,” Toft said.

Toft said Sea Gate has spent more than $10 million during a seven-year span to make upgrades to windows, repair balconies and make roof repairs.

“We didn’t have it easy, I mean we had some owners that were quite reluctant to do anything about this,” Toft said.

Toft said it was important for owners to communicate with their condominium boards if they’re feeling uneasy.

Toft said many of Sea Gate’s property values have doubled in the 18-month period it took for the condo to make property upgrades.

Krepla said it’s important for condo buyers to ask specific questions when considering where to buy.

“One of the key questions is, ‘Do you have reserves? And if you have reserves, what percentage?’” Krepla said, adding that such a fund can head off the need for costly extra assessments for residents to pay. “It’s important because no one likes surprises.”

Town Manager Tom Harmer said Broward and Dade counties require buildings older than 40 years to be recertified as safe.

After 40 years, private property owners in condos have to hire a structural engineer to evaluate their property, and then also provide a copy of the report for the city every 10 years after that.

“We’re looking at their regulations to see how that might apply here, and if that makes sense for something the commissions may want to consider as a potential change in our ordinance or code,” Harmer said.

Set in sand Longboat finalizes new rules for turtle nesting, beginning next year.

The town will change its sea turtle protections for next season after months of discussion about how to better reduce disorientations.

While the changes take effect on Jan. 2, 2022, by law, they are applicable only during turtle season, which runs each year from May 1-Oct. 31.

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons said the changes are going to require outreach and education to inform property owners.

“There will be, I think, a strong burden on staff here to help with identifying resources for people to be able to conveniently and easily find some of these products [like] turtle-friendly bulbs,” Parsons said. “As we talked about at the last meeting, different retailers may refer to those differently.”

Here are some of the changes: n Requiring all sources of artificial light visible from the beach to come from turtle-friendly bulbs and turtle-friendly fixtures.

ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF What is considered a turtlefriendly bulb?

A turtle-friendly light bulb is FWC-certified wildlife lighting or a bulb that produces only long wavelength light (560 nanometers) or longer and absent wavelengths less than 560 nanometers without the use of filters, gels or lenses.

What is considered a turtlefriendly fixture?

A fixture that is FWC-certified wildlife lighting or that is fully shielded, downward direct, meets full cut-off and with non-reflective opaque interior surfaces, and meets the same lighting standards for FWC certified wildlife lighting.

n No temporary structures or portable recreation equipment can be within 5 feet of marked marine turtle nests. The town’s current ordinance does not list a distance restriction between a sea turtle nest and someone’s beach chair. n Prohibiting the operation of motorized vehicles on the beach with some exceptions, including for law enforcement, emergencies, permitted construction projects or tourism properties (hotels and motels) that have a recreational-use agreement with the town. A recreational-use agreement allows an entity to use vehicles to retrieve temporary structures or portable recreational equipment on the beach. n Requiring temporary structures to be removed from the beach nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. during marine turtle nesting season.

“This is really educational and compliance-based,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said. “Our code enforcement typically doesn’t go out there and cite someone, especially for the first time.”

Other changes include adding language to explain the per-

mitting review process, adding a lighting inspection process for new developments, prohibiting temporary lights at nighttime such as lanterns or Tiki torches and nightly storage of beach recreational equipment.

The reason for Longboat Key’s changes is state data shows the island has a higher rate of sea turtle disorientations than other Florida municipalities.

“That’s one of the biggest things, visible light from the beach during season at night that can be those disorientations, so I think that is a big thing,” Harmer said.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium public relations manager Stephannie Kettle said that in 2020, Longboat Key had the second-most sea turtle disorientations among Florida beaches.

In an email to Harmer, Parsons has cited state data that shows Longboat Key had 130 disorientations among the 1,136 sea turtle nests in 2020.

to utilize FWC approved marine turtle fixtures and bulbs,” Kettle wrote in an email.

Initially, town staff considered window tinting as a potential resolution to fix beachfront-lighting issues, though price considerations in switching from 45% of light transmission to 15% proved overwhelming.

In April, town commissioners heard from an engineer who explained there is typically a higher cost for darker tinted glass. The higher cost prompted staff and commissioners not to

require window tinting as part of the ordinance.

Parsons said any building permit application the town receives before Jan. 2, 2022, is subject to the town’s existing code.

Parsons and commissioners acknowledged the difficulty of shopping for lighting products that are considered “turtlefriendly.”

Harmer said staff would plan to brief commissioners in December or January on their outreach efforts for property owners and other residents.

11-year-old Longboat Key girl wants to raise chickens Lark Rippy wrote to her commissioner asking if the town would consider new rules on animals.

Lark Rippy wanted something to remind her of home.

The 11-year-old Longboat Key resident remembered what it was like growing up with chickens in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“We had eight chickens, and I don’t remember a lot because I was really young, but I always remember getting the cute little baby chicks,” Rippy said.

Rippy said the chickens made for great pets, and the fresh eggs they laid helped improve the family’s cooking.

“I found our old chicken care book, and I started to look through it and I was like, ‘Oh man, I really want to keep doing this,’” Rippy said. “I started researching and I found out that you actually can’t on Longboat Key, and I just decided that, that is something that I wanted to change.”

Rippy wrote to District 5 Longboat Key Town Commissioner Maureen Merrigan to ask about the process of changing the town’s ordinance about animals within the town limits.

In Rippy’s email, she even referenced Ordinance 91.012, which states:

No livestock, fowl or domestic animals, other than household pets (dogs, cats, birds, fish or other pets generally accepted as household pets capable of and customarily sharing a dwelling with humans), shall be kept or maintained within the town.

“She didn’t even have me look at the email before she sent it, and then she wrote it and sent it from my email (address),” Rippy’s mother, Heather, said.

In January, the Rippy family opened Driftwood Beach Home and Garden at 6838 Gulf of Mexico Drive. They moved to Longboat Key when Heather’s husband, Dr. Steven Todd Rippy, found a position in Bradenton as a pediatrician.

Merrigan is a customer of the family’s store.

“She had done her research, which I thought was wonderful for an 11-year-old but also for any adult on the Key,” Merrigan said.

“It’s wonderful to have somebody who has looked into the ordinance and looked into the issue before they’ve reached out to a commissioner.”

Heather Rippy conceded her daughter’s letter to Merrigan was “probably” better than she could have done.

“I was very impressed that she knew how to find the ordinance,” Heather Rippy said.

Lark Rippy and her mom have started the process of asking their Longbeach Village neighbors about what they think about the possibility of raising a small flock of hens in their backyard. Together, they’ve put together an informal poll to get neighbors’ input.

They eventually plan to present their findings to the town.

The Longbeach Village neighborhood has a history with animals. In previous years, Village residents have argued about the merits and drawbacks of peacocks in the neighborhood.

However, the Rippys say their plan is part of a bigger vision for

“I want to live on a farm when I grow up and do traditional farming,” Lark Rippy said. “And have like alpacas and goats and sheep and like everything.

“Also, that was kind of part of the reason (I wrote in) because I wanted to start doing that again.”

Lark Rippy has also started walking neighbors’ dogs in the Village neighborhood and some residents who live near Whitney Plaza. She has her own pet section in the shop to sell things like leashes, collars, toys and small dog scoop holders.

“She’s an impressive young

girl, and she’s someone that’s going to be an impressive citizen and adult,” Merrigan said. “I was impressed with her intelligence, and I was impressed with her thoughtfulness and her initiative.”

If the commission decides to take up the issue, the earliest it could do so would be when it reconvenes after its summer break Sept. 13.

Heather Rippy, who has two daughters, said she is happy to see her children engaged in their community. “It’s funny because people have called both of my kids the future mayor of Longboat Key.”

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved the town’s proposed environmental projects to fulfill its consent order connected to the June 2020 sewage break.

A June 25 letter from FDEP Southwest District Director Kelley Boatwright to Town Manager Tom Harmer shows the state has approved plans to install an upgraded flow meter and three bypass pumps at lift stations in the wastewater collection system.

“There’s clear closure on the in-kind portion,” Harmer said.

“We’ve now both agreed of what makes sense to do as in-kind projects, and our priority was to do something that was a local benefit instead of sending the money to Tallahassee.”

Months ago, the state had already accepted the town’s plan to replace a 2006 model reserve portable generator at Master Lift Station D. Longboat Key Public Works Director Isaac Brownman wrote a June 3 letter to FDEP Environmental Specialist Derrick Hudson stating the total value of the approved projects is about $290,822.

Brownman wrote that it will take the town about three to four months to install the bypass pumps. It will take about four months to install the wastewater flow meter, Brownman wrote.

Had the FDEP not approved Longboat Key’s proposed projects, the town would have been responsible for paying the state $188,382 in penalties and costs.

Longboat Key is also in the process of advancing its redundant pipeline project, which has an estimated cost of $21.8 million.

Environmental engineering firm Greeley and Hansen provided an Aug. 14, 2017, report that estimated the pipe that broke had 20-25 years of life remaining. The force main was built in 1973. Lawyers for the firm have rejected the notion of the town’s request for compensation.

Club hears chief’s plans for police accreditation STAFF WRITER

T

he Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key got a visit from the police at its July 1 meeting, but no one was on the lam — it was a friendly visit. Interim Longboat Key Police Chief George Turner attended the meeting as a speaker to introduce himself to the community members and explain his goals for the department.

Longtime Longboaters might recognize Turner from his stint as a police officer and later, a captain, in the early 2000s. He’d been coming to the area since the 1980s and took a job as an officer on the island when he retired as a chief in Ulster, New York, in 2000. Turner is a career law enforcement officer, having started in New York in 1976. He’s been retired a couple of times, but wanted to keep doing police work. He applied for the Longboat Key police chief job last fall, but didn’t get it after making it to the finals. Turner is back now on an interim basis and ready to get to work.

Turner fielded questions from the group, including queries about the boats that swarm the

north end of the Key on hot days and weekends. The department has two boats that Turner said they run on high volume days, doing their best to be visible.

“It’s all for safety and boater safety, and the enjoyment of everybody out there … and we try to be reasonable,” Turner said. “If there is a noise complaint, we go and we tell the violator, ‘Please turn it down,’ 100% of the time they turn it down.”

Turner also answered questions about what can be done to make crossing Gulf of Mexico Drive safer and how he will bring in the best candidates for the department.

“I’m not looking for any personnel, but for training and accreditation, and making sure our equipment is up to standard, so that we can provide a high level of service that we’ve always done in the past and plan to do in the future,” Turner said.

this at this time,” Turner said. “I have no idea whether I’ll be here for six months or six years.”

Turner’s big goal is to get the department accredited in the eyes of the state. It’s about a two-year process and will involve community feedback in about 20 months, he said. Turner helped his former department in Brooksville become accredited during his stint as chief there from 2007 to 2018.

“Our policy procedures are right now, as we speak, being updated,” Turner said. “We’re not going to reinvent the wheel, we’re going to do what everybody else in the state does. We take policy procedures from other accredited law enforcement agencies that have proven records of success, and we’re going to implement them here. We are not going to hire people with any kind of blemishes on their record, and we are going to hold everyone accountable.”

The process starts with training, and Longboat Key officers will be sent to emergency vehicle operations training next month.

Turner is also dedicated to hiring only officers with experience and education who know what kind of community they’ll be serving.

“Our job out here is a lot of non-traditional law enforcement functions,” Turner said. “We’re

n May 24, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law one of his signature pieces of legislation for 2021 — a law to rein in what he described as Big Tech censorship. Senate Bill 7072 bans social media platforms from cutting off political candidates’ posts to their platforms, changing how posts by or about a candidate are seen, or adding system comments to posts by a “journalistic enterprise” based on the content. It also bans the deeming of new stories to be “disinformation” and blocking their sharing on the platform.

As this legislation worked its way to the governor’s desk, it was widely pointed out that these restrictions are blatantly unconstitutional. The First Amendment, as interpreted by many court precedents, clearly says the government cannot mandate that private companies carry speech they find objectionable or offensive — just like Christian cake-makers cannot be forced by government to bake gay wedding cakes, or a liberal newspaper can’t be forced to publish conservative op-eds.

So, it took less than six weeks for a federal court to block the law. The judge pointed out the clear violation of the First Amendment, writing, “The legislation compels providers to host speech that violates their standards — speech they otherwise would not host — and forbids providers from speaking as they otherwise would.” And that “[T]he governor’s signing statement and numerous remarks of legislators show rather clearly that the legislation is viewpointbased.”

The state’s GOP leaders really did give themselves away in their joint statement at the signing of the bill. DeSantis said Big Tech would no longer be able to censor and discriminate in favor of their ideology. Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez claimed Big Tech oligarchs censor views contrary to their radical leftist narrative. Senate President Wilton Simpson said we have to stop the abuses of unchecked Big Tech. Speaker Chris Sprowls said we need to bring the Big Tech monopolies out of the dark. And other GOP legislators chimed in, claiming Big Tech oligarchs threaten free speech.

Virtually everything they said is untrue and deeply contrary to the conservative principles they claim to uphold. Social media

platforms, or any private person or company, cannot censor anyone. Only the government can forbid the promulgation of speech by a person — that is what censor means. A popular company is not an oligarchy or a monopoly. It is deeply disturbing to see Republican leaders decide their desire to force popular social media companies to do their bidding is more important than standing up for the First Amendment and the rest of the Constitution.

Nor has the governor applied his justification for the law consistently and fairly. The law exempts some favored companies from the restrictions — like Disney. Yes, Disney does social media, which might be a clue that Twitter and Facebook are not monopolies: They compete against each other and Disney.

And if that sentence didn’t give you a headache you are not paying attention. So state lawmakers thought it important that Disney be allowed to not include posts it finds objectionable, but those lefties in Silicon Valley should not be able to do so. …

You begin to see why the judge said the law is rather clearly viewpoint-based.

You can see that even more in Gov. DeSantis’ reaction to Twitter blocking Rebekah Jones, the former Florida Department of Health web employee who accused his administration of covering up COVID-19 deaths.

The governor says he opposes social media companies blocking people and the sharing of stories based on their ideology, and the new law he signed forbids it.

Yet when Jones was blocked by Twitter, DeSantis said, “This decision was long overdue.

Rebekah Jones is the Typhoid Mary of COVID-19 disinformation and has harmed many hardworking DOOH employees with her defamatory conspiracy theories.” So, he actually only opposes social media blocking people or statements he doesn’t like.

The state attempting to control the decisions of private parties like social media platforms on what content they will or will not share cannot help but fall into this kind of political opportunism. As the lawsuit against

the Florida law stated, it “was motivated by animus toward popular technology companies— animus specifically driven by disapproval of the companies’ perceived political and other viewpoints.” The First Amendment explicitly was created to prevent that. If the Florida law were legitimate, then any Democratic state would be equally legitimate with a law restricting conservative social media.

It’s a vicious cycle of political manipulation and control with no good end.

People who consume social media want moderation by the social media platforms. They want some lines to be drawn so that the platform doesn’t get swamped by hate or other unacceptable behavior. The companies provide that in a competitive market, and the ones that do a good job of providing a system people enjoy using get more customers. It’s pretty straightforward and consistent with what Florida’s GOP leaders say when they talk about the rest of the market.

Replacing private moderation in a competitive market that lets all of us find the social media platforms we prefer with government control of content would be a disaster for free speech and the rest of our liberties.

There are a multitude of search engines and social platforms to choose from. The right response to behavior by any one of them that you don’t like is to go try a different one. And recognize that social media is still simply one of many ways any person or political candidate can get their voice out. There remain all the instruments of conventional media from newspapers to talk radio to rallies and podcasts, and who knows what we will see next. Investor websites highlight dozens of “new social media startups to watch in 2021.” There is plenty of competition, and no need for dumb and unconstitutional laws that try to control social media companies the politician of the day doesn’t like.

In June, a friend and family and I ate dinner twice at Mar Vista Dockside. On our first visit, we parked in the lot. The second time, my friend and I dropped off my brother and began a search for a parking spot.

We saw some green and white signs that stated, “Permit Parking Only.” We continued a few blocks on Broadway toward Gulf of Mexico Drive.

We saw parking spots painted on the road with no nearby signs indicating these spots were anything other than public.

We all agreed that we were happy that this restaurant was able to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. My brother said that he wanted to bring his wife for their 35th wedding anniversary. As we were leaving we saw an officer ticketing several cars in the “Permit Parking Only” spaces.

We breathed a sigh of relief because we had parked at least two blocks away in unmarked spaces. As I approached our rental car (Illinois license plate), I saw that we had also been given a $75 parking ticket.

I quickly ran to speak with the officer and asked why we were given a ticket.

He said that the whole neighborhood was designated “Permit Parking Only” with a sign right at the turn onto Broadway from Gulf of Mexico Drive. I stated that this was three to four blocks away, and we were not familiar with this neighborhood. I also explained

that most people would only look at the posted green and white “Permit Parking Only” signs and not remember seeing any signs when pulling onto Broadway.

I asked if he could just give us a warning. He said that there was nothing he could do about this ticket. He stated that he agreed with my reasoning, however, he said that it was out of his control. He informed me that I could fight the ticket by going before a magistrate.

I was a tourist and would be leaving for home in two days.

I also brought up the fact that every car that I had seen with a ticket did not have a Florida license plate. My brother expressed that the signs were not parallel with the road but perpendicular to the road. This would force the driver to turn his/her head at a 90-degree angle to see the signs. My brother is a retired police officer and told the officer that this area was confusing for tourists.

On Friday, my friend and I went to Longboat Key Town Hall to pay our ticket. We spoke at length to the administrative assistant in charge of parking tickets. I told her that I felt parking tickets had become a revenue stream by luring unsuspecting tourists. She assured me that this was not the case. She stated that the citizens of the street were angry after patrons of the restaurants had been parking in front of their driveways and had their neighborhood designated “Permit Parking Only.”

We understood the neighborhood’s right to be angry over this situation; however, we did not (and still do not) understand how these citizens are entitled to designated parking spaces.

Furthermore, they have these private parking spaces on a public street. The administrative assistant then informed us that Mar Vista had free valet parking, but we told her that there were no valets when we tried to park in the lot. I expressed my frustration that these parking fines stop people like my brother, my friend, and I from spending any further money than absolutely necessary while on vacation.

I also questioned why Mar Vista did not have a sign telling patrons not to park on the street. After hearing this, I left the Town Hall with even more negative feelings. Needless to say, my brother will not be celebrating his anniversary at Mar Vista.

I realize that this venting letter will not help me; however, I hope that somehow this helps other unsuspecting tourists from being easily targeted.

Only the United States has from its inception celebrated its true diversity by memorializing the concept as its moto: E Pluribus Unum - out of many, one.

Instead of “Celebrating Our Differences,” why do we not celebrate that which unites us as Americans, and leave it to other nations to continue focusing on their inhabitants’ differences.

That’s no coincidence, for in many ways Diversity — the capital-D variant, as understood today by its proselytizers — has attained religious status.

The degree to which one advocates for Diversity — and other components of Leftist orthodoxy — and prioritizes it among one’s beliefs and practices is a principal determinant of one’s virtuousness.

While such organizations worship at the altar of Diversity, they are bereft of a truly diverse worldview. In fact, those of its insiders who dare to disagree or who become apostates are marginalized or otherwise disposed of.

Among that subset, ultimate vilification is reserved for, ironically, racial and ethnic minorities who fail to toe the line. Worse still, these institutions lack any self-awareness of such deficiencies.

Diversity-worship accentuates our differences — that which divides us, not that which unites us. Western Europe, arguably the home, if not the role model, for Diversity, is, to say the least, not infused with the spirit of the movement.

Paradise Center introduces massage The Paradise Center adds Brandy Mixon to its lineup after learning members want massage services.

Once massage therapist Brandy Mixon moves into the Tidewell Foundation building, the Paradise Center’s medical suite will be full.

Mixon, the massage therapist behind Essence of Soleil Massage, will move her studio into the building at 540 Bay Isles Road — specifically, Suite 402.

It was a room designed for office space, which transforms easily into a massage studio. Mixon’s practice will be there full-time starting this week.

Paradise Center Executive Director Suzy Brenner and Community Outreach Director Donna Sharp Blaney sent out a survey to members asking what service

they wanted to see fill that last spot.

Chiropractic service was also on the list, but massage won out.

They contacted Mixon, and the timing was perfect as her lease was about to expire.

“It’s just a better fit,” Mixon said. “My background is more medically integrated with massage. They have physical therapy (FitnessQuest) right across the hall there’s Tidewell, Youthful Aging, and they also have Zumba classes and yoga, so that’s more of a better fit for me. It goes handin-hand, the rehab and massage.

Most physical therapists like to get feedback from their clients after they’ve seen me, and I’ve been known to have really good progress with their treatments.”

Mixon has experience in neuromuscular massage, oncology massage and therapeutic and sports massage, as well as cupping therapy, lymphatic drainage and reflexology.

The resident said no personal data was given, though the caller knew both her local address and out-of-state address.

here are countless forms of artistic expression, both verbal and expressive.

Christal Brown has known hers from a young age — Brown loves to dance, and she’s made a career out of that passion. The associate professor of dance at Middlebury College in Vermont has her own dance-coaching company and has produced a series of dance works examining the impact of the human body.

To her, dance is one of the most efficient ways to communicate.

“What I love about dancing is that it gets me the closest to people that I’ve ever been,” Brown said. “It’s the medicine

in the candy that cuts through all the kind of differences and the things that we put up walls for. It just gets us right to the humanity of each other.”

On July 9-10, Brown will relay that message as part of the Sarasota Contemporary Dance studio’s In-Person Performance Series, where she will perform excerpts from her various dance pieces to a small audience.

The performance will be streamed on the July 9 and performed live on July 10.

Dance has been a lifelong passion for Brown, but it started

out very much as a fortunate accident.

Instead of being dropped off at piano classes when she was a young girl, Brown was mistakenly sent to her best friend’s ballet recital.

She grew enamored with the craft from there and started taking lessons at 9 years old. She started off with tap, ballet, jazz and aerobics at a small studio in North Carolina and found herself as an assistant there by the time she was 14.

That led to becoming renowned in tap dancing, followed by studying dance at the University of North CarolinaGreensboro and at an independent study in California.

She feels she’s had a fortunate career working with several organizations and prominent figures in the Black dance community such as Bebe Miller and Bill T. Jones over the years.

“By the shape of my career I’ve actually embodied every part of the African diaspora in modern and contemporary dance as we know it in America,” she said.

Brown had more time off from teaching at Middlebury College during the pandemic and decided it would be a good time to perform at the Sarasota Contemporary Dance studio. The performance will consist of a solo performance of “I’m Fine,” as well as her “What We Ask Of Flesh” series.

Brown had the idea for the “What We Ask of Flesh” series after reading a poetry collection of the same name that had her thinking about the idea of flesh and skin in a scientific and religious perspective.

The conclusion she came to is that flesh is the boundary between the world and the soul — the part of us that holds onto trace residue as things enter and exit our lives.

She’s attempted to put that feeling and philosophy into a dance production.

She will perform the original solo dance piece the production is based upon and a fellow company member will show a brief excerpt from the final production as well. While the production is a structured per-

formance, Brown says there are improvisational aspects that will be different each time.

Brown says she often thinks about that improvisation and how mixing it with a structured performance can help her feel a kind of transcendence while dancing.

“A lot of times, I know I’ve been on stage, and there are things that happen in my body or through my body that I’m not totally aware of,” Brown said.

“That way of being able to clear out the clutter … is partially what my practice is.”

The dance production is an endeavor that Brown hopes will encourage the audience to participate in the production themselves. “(The audience) should feel free to engage in a dialogue about what’s happening with their own bodies while they’re watching,” Brown said. “(They should be) taking on the understanding that we’re working with this definition of flesh that is a basically conduit for what we let into our lives and what we set out.”

ourth of July 2021 got off to a star-spangled start on Longboat Key with the Freedom Fest.

After it was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, pent-up demand for the small-town classic brought hundreds to Bay Isles Road for the short parade and subsequent festival on the morning of Fourth of July. The Hot Diggity Dog! parade and contest, hosted as always by the Rotary Club of Longboat Key, had 33 patriotic pups walking Bay Isles Road — a

parade record. The competition was fierce, but in the end only three dogs could win Most Patriotic, Best Owner-Dog Combo and Honorable Mention.

“It was really, really hard to pick,” judge Jay Sparr said. “There were so many that could’ve won and so many did great things.”

Though the dogs tried to steal the show, there was too much else to look at during the parade, billed the “world’s shortest” by the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce. Chamber members including Cannons Marina, Cadence Bank and Junk King tossed candy to the kids on the sidelines, the Longboat Key police and fire departments lit up their red, white and blue lights and even two miniature horses walked along Bay Isles Road. The parade had four grand marshals

this year and the theme was honoring Longboat Key’s hometown heroes.

“I’m just happy we could bring it back,” chamber President Gail Loefgren said. “Before the parade, everybody was really anxious to get it started.”

The Forshey family has been coming to Longboat Key since the 1970s and is usually here over the Fourth of July weekend. The parade is a tradition and a bit of old-Florida charm that they’re glad to see return after the pandemic. One of the youngest Forsheys, Mary Ellen, was getting her face painted at the site of the games after the parade.

“Every time I come here I feel like I’ve gone back in time,” Chris Forshey said.

A

somewhat plain bird most of the year, with a gray body and a whitish belly, blackbellied plovers are showstoppers during mating season. For these few months, they molt into bold colors: a contrasting mix of snow white and their namesake jetblack plumage.

Molting is the process of birds replacing their old feathers with new ones. Unlike hair and fingernails, which continually regenerate and grow, a feather is a complete structure and no longer grows once it reaches full size. A molt may be partial, replacing just some of a bird’s feathers, which may have become worn with age or use, for feathers don’t last forever.

And, for some birds, molting is part of a striking transformation that occurs before breeding season. After a winter in dull plumage, which keeps them nicely camouflaged, fresh, brightly colored feathers are part of many birds’ preparation for attracting a mate. Indeed, studies have shown that many birds with brighter plumage have better breeding success.

Black-bellied plovers, the largest of the North American plovers, are migratory visitors to our shores, so their populations are highest during fall and winter, when the whistles and loud alarm calls of these cautious birds can frequently be heard.

Interestingly, it is thanks to their alert nature, as well as these loud calls, that their populations were not heavily affected by the feather trade in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which wiped out many other shorebird and wading bird populations. In the summer, most black-bellied plovers return to their breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra, traveling farther north than any other plover species.

Otherwise fairly plain, black-bellied plovers are named for their breeding plumage, which is a striking mix of white and jet black feathers.

Chamber greets new faces

or the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, June 30 was cloudy with a chance of networking.

Members gathered away from the day’s steady rain at the Cedars Tennis Resort Clubhouse for a Business After Hours event to reintroduce themselves to their fellow businesspeople. Several members’ guests met and greeted others in the community, while established members got a chance to congratulate the 2020 Chamber Awards winners again.

The chamber's board members served as bartenders, including Evan Barniskis, the assistant vice president of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, who will be the chairman of the board next year. Five ambassadors milled about the clubhouse, chatting up guests and selling tickets for the door prizes, while CEO and President Gail Loefgren tried to elicit float entries and sponsors for Freedom Fest on the Fourth of July.
