Among them is Jaymie Klauber. She and her husband, Tommy, have created for themselves a lifestyle that’s equal parts business and pleasure. It can be busy, even intense. But every aspect reflects Jaymie’s lifelong love of two things — riding horses and rescuing animals.

Members of the highprofile Klauber family, the couple owns the Polo Grill and Bar, Lakewood Ranch’s flagship restaurant and gathering spot. But their hearts lie about five minutes away, at their 6.9-acre ranch. It’s hard to tell when the passion for polo stops, if ever. It’s at the restaurant, it’s in the house, and most of all, it’s out in the barn.

Jaymie started life as a rich kid from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. (Her family owned Faberge fragrances, the creators of Brut, the bestselling men’s cologne, ever.)

“I could ride before I could walk,” Jaymie says. “It’s what I love.” Back in those days, most of the riding was done at her family’s weekend property in New Jersey.

Nowadays, it’s at the Polo Club, a 600-acre division of Lakewood Ranch. It was, in fact, the first part of Lakewood Ranch to be developed residentially. Forget the highly manicured feeling that pervades most of the Ranch. The Polo Club is a world apart. It’s like the set of a movie about rich families who love horses, which is pretty much exactly what it is. The residents include members of some of the country’s wealthiest families, plus a smattering of retired sports stars, new-money billionaires and plain folks who love horses.

The physical look of the Polo Club is no developer’s fantasy. It’s the real thing.

Horses are everywhere, grazing in the pasture, running at the track in one of the nine regulation-size polo arenas, or being groomed in the barns, some of which are elaborate, indeed.

Recognized as a leading polo center, the Sarasota Polo Club attracts players from all over the world. During the season, December-April, there’s a match every Sunday, with thousands of spectators,

many of whom have raised tailgating to an art form.

Other communities in Lakewood Ranch have strict building codes. That’s why all the homes resemble each other. The Polo Club takes a different approach. Here, it’s left up to the tastes of the owner, and the result is a collection of noteworthy homes.

Some are enormous and jawdropping. Others don’t let you forget they are working ranches.

The Klauber home falls into the latter category. Not too big (2,570 square feet, including a studio apartment) and easy to maintain, it consists of a ground floor with a living room, kitchen, office for Jaymie, office for Tommy and two baths. Upstairs is the master suite, which opens onto a screen porch with a view of the surrounding area.

There’s also a large bath and a massive closet that must be 30 feet long.

The master suite occupies the entire second floor. It includes a large bath and an enormous walk-in closet.

“The place seemed a little barren when we bought it,” Tommy recalls. So when he had a birthday, Jaymie asked guests to bring a plant to the party. The result? Three hundred plants, which now surround the pool and turn it into a little tropical oasis.

But much more important than the pool is the barn, right behind the house. There

are 14 stalls. Some are rented out — a common practice at the Polo Club — but seven are home to Jaymie’s horses. She takes care of them herself, with help from a part-time groom. Robbie and Levi, a pair of mismatched mutts from Honor Rescue, also do their part.

Each horse gets a sizable 12-by-12 stall, with its own fan. Several of them, like Jaymie’s favorite Nate, are retired race horses given to the Klaubers by Mary Lou Whitney, the race horse owner and society grande dame. Now well into her 90s, Whitney used to spend the winters on Longboat Key, where she often dropped by Pattigeorge’s, the restaurant Jaymie and Tommy owned before the Polo Grill. In

It’s another example of the closeness and camaraderie of Sarasota’s polo community.

“You can go to any polo club in the world and immediately feel at home,” Jaymie says.

And though the Klaubers are moving on — probably to

another equestrian community farther east — their love of horses and animals will always be there.
