This home takes a different approach. It’s in the middle of the woods. Yet the principle remains the same. The land itself becomes a part of the house, which is so carefully sited that the overused phrase “bringing the outdoors in” takes on a new meaning. It’s everywhere you look — the Florida sun, carefully filtered through giant oaks, lights an enormous garden of tropical plants.

Originally called the Villa Cedros, the home is prominently featured in the book about Abbott’s work, “In/ Formed by the Land.” Before it was built in 1984, the architect studied what he had to work with. He visited the site many times to experience the quality and quantity of light, even the sounds and breezes of the forest. The result is a sanctuary that presents its back to the world, allowing the front of the home, with much glass and terraces, to look out serenely over its two-acre garden. The home is so strategically placed that it receives no direct sun, yet remains the sunniest house imaginable.

The home has had its ups and downs over the years. It sat empty for a while and even suffered the indignity of an auction back in the recession.

Its garden deteriorated badly.

When the current owners, who declined to be identified, found it in 2008, it definitely needed some renourishment.

The secluded world they have created for themselves attests to this trait for privacy.

Both are successful business people, and they had renovated other homes. “We never bought anything new,” the wife says. “We love to rescue worthwhile property.”

The house is large — 6,152 square feet, with five bedrooms and three-and-ahalf baths — and the original design is still very much intact.

Abbott divided it into three sections. The living room is the first, placed by itself at

one end and entered via a dramatic roomwide stairway. It’s an elegant space, with 17-foot ceilings and a Florida keystone fireplace. The dining room, kitchen and family room are at the top of the stairway and comprise their own section.

Then come the bedrooms, off by themselves via a gallery across a large screened porch.

“I wanted the house for the interior,” the wife explained.

“My husband wanted it for the desert.” The “desert” is a description of the state of the yard. First things first.

replaced with cedar siding set on a strong horizontal, which gives the house a warm look that further integrated it into its wooded setting. The necessary mechanicals were replaced, and there was a general redecorating. But the guiding principle remained

the same: “Most people would have renovated,” the wife says.

“We restored.”

The home’s two major spaces are its most remarkable.

Even better is the kitchen. The owners resisted the advice everyone gave them — “tear it out and put in a brand new kitchen” — and instead went with the original design.

The cabinets are oak with matching handles. The floors are wood, in a herringbone pattern, and the only major change was to replace the turquoise Formica countertops with a milky green granite that echoes the woods outside.

The kitchen merges with the family room, where there is another fireplace, and may well be the brightest space in the home thanks to a gallery that runs its length, connecting the bedroom wing to a secluded office. Light enters from all sides and spills out onto a terrace overlooking the
