Be skin smart in the Florida sun In the Sunshine State, sunscreen isn’t enough for a lifetime of healthy skin.

Living in Florida, it’s expected that residents will enjoy the outdoors.

But spending too much time outside in the Sunshine State can be harmful to our skin.

“Going to the beach for any prolonged period of time isn’t good for your skin,” said Dr. Elizabeth Callahan, of SkinSmart Dermatology, in Sarasota. “I feel like the best recommendation for avoiding sun damage is to avoid the sun. If that can’t happen, you have to start being smart about it.”

Sun damage to the skin accumulates over a lifetime, so it is important to start healthy skin practices at a young age.

“It’s very typical for the youth to think they’re immune to those sort of lessons,” said Dr. Emily Arsenault, of Arsenault Dermatology, in Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton. “They’re going out in the sun and getting burned, and the damage won’t show up until they’re older.”

Babies and young children have extremely delicate skin and are sensitive to the sun, so it is important to keep them protected. Children should be in full, covered sun-proof clothing, hats and sunglasses.

As people age, their skin loses much of its natural moisture.

“The challenges of taking care of your skin become greater with age,” Callahan said. “Your skin ages like the rest of your body.

It loses its natural oils and dries more. The most important thing is to be aware of them and to supplement your diet and take the best care of your skin as you can.”

Callahan recommends taking fish oil and drinking plenty of water, especially in a hot climate such as Florida. It is also important to use gentle soaps and avoid taking long, hot showers.

“Most common soaps in the grocery store are harshest on your skin,” Callahan said.

“Americans are focused on cleansing their skin with antibacterial and very harsh soaps.

We need to be gentler with our skin than we are. We strip our skin of our good oils, and that makes our skin dry, and we’re not moisturizing enough.”

“Here in Florida, the sun is so much stronger than what people are used to up north,” Arsenault said. “Some of these snowbirds and some who are seasonal or those who grew up up north, they have this false sense of security that they’re not going to have as much damage. The sun here is stronger, and the UV index is so high, and you accumulate the damage much more quickly. Even those with darker skin can have sun damage here.”

BATTLE OF THE BUG SPRAYS The CDC recommends bug sprays that contain the chemical DEET. But many say natural oils keep mosquitoes away.

L

aurie Letzo spent the Fourth of July with her boyfriend along the bayfront watching the fireworks. Unlike most of the crowd, they didn’t spend the night swatting away mosquitoes. Letzo says that’s because she brought her “bug juice”— a mix of essential oils suspended in distilled water and witch hazel oil.

Summer always leaves us itching to keep mosquitoes away — even more so this year, due to the spread of the Zika virus. But do natural remedies actually work?

The Centers for Disease Control says that several chemicals and natural products can repel mosquitoes, although it recommends bug sprays that contain at least 20% DEET — a chemical that blinds mosquitoes to people’s chemical scent — such as Cutter Backwoods or Off! Deep Woods.

Both the CDC and the Sarasota County Department of Health recommend the oil of lemon eucalyptus as a mosquito repellent.

Sarasota County doesn’t take a stance on natural versus chemical products, according to Mat-

thew Smith, director of Sarasota County Mosquito Management.

But it only recommends products that are backed by clinical research and can be uniformly applied, which include a patented chemical formula called IR3535 and products that use menthoglycol and DEET. “The thing about using commercially bought products that have a label is that it makes it a little more uniform in use,” Smith said. “The thing about essential oils is there is a lot of anecdotal evidence.”

Like Smith, Mark Latham, director of Manatee County Mosquito Control District, only recommends products that stand up to the CDC’s standards.

“Anyone can say anything about, ‘Well I use oil of cucumber, and it’s fantastic, and it’s effective,’ and all this, but where is the evidence?” he said.

But many, including Letzo, believe natural options are preferable to chemicals.

“Your skin is the largest organ on your body,” said Letzo, who sells Young Living essential oils and makes her bug juice out of two of its oil blends. “We don’t realize when we put something on our skin it affects our whole

The mixture is mostly lemongrass, citronella and lavender, but she says those are not the only essential oils with bugrepellent properties.

Another proponent of natural bug sprays is Brenda Yanofsky, a clinical psychologist and licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine. She says peppermint, lemon eucalyptus, rosemary and about a dozen other essential oils are effective at repelling mosquitoes.

The trick, she says, is finding what works with your particular body chemistry. She says essential oils, just like commercial bug sprays, react differently depending on the person. That’s why mosquitoes “like” some people more than others and why some bug sprays seem to be more effective on one person and less effective on another.

“There’s not one right thing,” Yanofsky said. “It’s just finding what works for you, what works for your family.”

Latham said people should consider factors such as how long they need the repellent to last and the amount of time they will need protection.

“Different products will provide high levels of protection for different lengths of time,” he said.

Smith suggests staying indoors around dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes like to feed, and covering your skin if you have to go outside during those times.

“You don’t have to worry about chemicals if you wear long, loose-fitting clothing,” Smith said.

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE It seems like everyone has their favorite bug spray — the one product they swear works better than any other repellent on the shelf. I managed to persuade two Observer staffers to put down their favorite bottles of bug spray and pick up a tiny, clear spray bottle of Laurie Letzo’s bug juice would actually keep bugs away.

The bug juice is a combination of about 10 oils including lavender, citronella, rosemary and lemon. Everyone’s body composition is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. That said, I wasn’t convinced the spray would work for my co-workers.

Robin Hartill, managing editor of the Longboat Observer and Sarasota Observer, was skeptical.

“I thought you were going to give me Zika,” she said. (I didn’t.)

Design Editor C.J. Major also had his doubts.

In fact, he has stopped wearing bug spray altogether because nothing has worked in the past.

He didn’t think my small, clear bottle of mystery liquid would be any different than the countless other products he has tried in the past.

“I thought absolutely nothing would happen,” Major said. “I thought, ’Bugs love me. They’ll still attack me.’”

He took the spray to an outdoor concert but didn’t wear it the first night. After establishing that bugs do, indeed, love him, he took the spray out of his bag and gave it shot. Luckily for him (and me), it worked.

The spray stood the test of Hartill’s weekly cornhole match. She reapplied once, but overall, she was pleased with how the spray performed.

“I didn’t think anything without DEET could work,” Hartill said.

She also tested the spray while walking her dog, Oscar, in Red Bug Slough. Though, the spray didn’t seem to be very effective against grass bugs, it seemed to repel the mosquitoes well. She also said the smell wasn’t as harsh compared with other products she’s used.

“I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite smell in the world, but it wasn’t bad.” Hartill said. “The only sprays I found that worked in the past smelled really bad.”

ulia DeCastro has always believed in the power of healthy living, but it wasn’t until she and her husband, Giovanni, decided to buy a pair of road bikes that the broker associate for Michael Saunders & Co. took her fitness regimen to a new level. The couple participated in the Lance Armstrong Ride, and from there, DeCastro began riding in additional road races before working her way up to her first triathlon 10 years ago.

DeCastro has done six triathlons to date and is planning to compete in the Longboat Key Triathlon Oct. 16.

DeCastro grew up playing softball and swimming. She continued to play both sports throughout high school. Although she didn’t play sports in college, DeCastro maintained a healthy lifestyle, centered around athletics and active living, which she has since passed on to her two daughters, Emma, 13, who plays travel volleyball for RAVE, and Savannah, 15, who plays soccer for Braden River High and FC Sarasota. University Place resident Julia DeCastro will complete her seventh triathlon, the Longboat Key Triathlon, in October.

GOING THE DISTANCE

After moving to East County 13 years ago, DeCastro began working out with a group of women at the YMCA. Shortly thereafter, the friends decided to challenge themselves by running a 5K. Gradually, the women worked their way up to a 10K, a half marathon, and eventually, a full marathon. In the years since, DeCastro has run three full marathons and countless half marathons.

“I’m never in it to win,” DeCastro said. “I just try to do better each time for myself. I enjoy it. I enjoy the training, the camaraderie with friends and the accomplishment. It’s good for my kids too to see that commitment. It’s fun. Maybe it’s my midlife crisis.”

If you asked DeCastro a few years ago to pick a workout routine she couldn’t live without, running would have been at the top of the list. Fast forward to today, and DeCastro is having a love/hate relationship with the sport and only runs an average of six miles a week.

“It’s so hot,” DeCastro said.

it’s so hard to get back into it.”

“For me, I would say to try and find something you enjoy and want to do because then you’ll do it,” DeCastro said. “Whether it’s walking, running or paddle boarding, find something that makes you feel good. Fitness doesn’t have to be hateful.”

While she doesn’t have a specific date in mind, DeCastro would eventually like to try and do a half Ironman. She also would like to take a Pure Barre class.

Dietitians dish out the truth on

Florida food The state produces many foods that are delicious — but are they nutritious?

ome Florida-favorite foods can be confusing.

Fish is healthy, but what about when it’s fried?

Fruits are healthy, but what about pesticide residue? We asked registered dietitians Kathy Namolik, of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and Corista Williams, of Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, to help us determine which delicious Florida foods are also nutritious.

POWER FOODS AVOCADOS

They have more fat than any other fruit, but it’s good fat, Williams said. Because they contain monounsaturated fat, they serve as an anti-inflammatory. They’re also rich in fiber and have as much potassium as a banana, plus their high-fat content makes them filling.

“It seems to really keep your appetite at a good place so you’re not hungry right after,” Namolik said.

MANGOES

Not only do mangoes make the “clean list” for having low levels of pesticides, but one cup equals 100% of the daily value (the recommended intake for a healthy adult based on a 2,000-calorie diet) of vitamin C, Namolik said.

One cup also has 12% of the daily value of fiber and 35% of the daily value of vitamin A. “It’s good for immune boosting and can help lower risk for heart disease,” Williams said.

STRAWBERRIES

Strawberries are on the “dirty dozen” list for containing high levels of pesticides, but that doesn’t mean they should be avoided. A whole cup of strawberries is only 60 calories, Namolik said. They’re also rich in vitamin C and fiber and contain no fat.

“The way they’re made tells you they’re good for you, and they’re cute and usually a fan favorite in kids,” Williams said.

SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE SCALLOPS

A 4-ounce serving of scallops has just 100 calories and 1 gram of fat, Williams said. Scallops also contain 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamin B12, which helps combat inflammation and osteoporosis.

KEY WORD: MODERATION

Registered dietitians Kathy Namolik, of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and Corista Williams, of Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, both say portion control is key.

All foods fit in moderation, Williams said.

In addition, sometimes changing the way food is prepared can make all the difference.

Namolik recommends asking for food to be cooked with olive oil instead of butter at restaurants to lower the fat content, for example.

“For older people over 50, we often need extra B12 because we don’t absorb it very well, so it’s a good way to get extra into your system,” Namolik said.

GROUPER

As long as it’s not deep fried, grouper is a low-fat, low-calorie choice, Namolik said. A 4-ounce serving has 2 grams of unsaturated fat, 110 calories and 23 grams of protein.

“If you fry it, of course it’s going to be higher in fat, but otherwise it’s a good, lean meat,” Williams said.

ALLIGATOR

Alligator is low in fat and high in protein. Williams calls it “the other white meat.” A 4-ounce serving has 110 calories and 24 grams of

protein — but both Namolik and Williams warned against frying it to avoid a higher fat content.

SHARK

A 4-ounce serving of shark has only 100 calories and a half-gram of fat, plus 22 grams of protein.

Pregnant women and small children should take caution though, because shark has high mercury levels.

Shark can be cooked the same way you cook other fish.

“You can put them all in different ways: soups, salads, which is amazing and which makes it very versatile,” Williams said.

FROZEN YOGURT

OK, frozen yogurt isn’t a Floridagrown or -raised food, but the heat makes it a favorite, particu-

larly during the summer.

Although frozen yogurt is a lower-fat alternative to ice cream, the toppings can be killer.

“A lot of times people in yogurt shops will get the 16-ounce portion, which is the big cup, and then by the time you get all the toppings it’s maybe 500 calories,” Namolik said.

THE ANOMALY ORANGE JUICE

Orange juice is a good source of vitamin C and potassium, Namolik said. The problem with orange juice is the amount of liquid calories it contains because those enter the bloodstream quickly compared to a whole fruit. Williams recommends eating a regular orange instead of juice.

Within the Lakewood Ranch running community, a running favorite is within the gates of the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

Not only does the area boast serene views of the golf course, but it’s quiet and has plenty of routes from which to choose.

There is less traffic than along Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, and runners can create routes ranging from 2 to 8 miles.

A runner can take a main route, for example, starting at Balmoral Woods Boulevard and running along Arnold Palmer Green to Legacy Boulevard and then reconnecting with Arnold Palmer to complete a nearly 3-mile loop. Or, a runner can take side streets or other main
