Local health professionals weigh in on the benefits of genetic testing for everyday people. HARRY SAYER STAFF WRITER

A

s anyone in the medical field can tell you, the human body is incredibly complex. Beyond the thousands upon thousands of variations in height, eye color, skin color, hair color and athletic ability are the millions of variables that make up our genetic structures. For decades, medical professionals and scientists have learned more about our bodies through genetic testing, a procedure in which we examine our DNA structure. It looks at whether your body has changes — mutations — in its genes that point to a specific illness or condition. Some changes can point to cancer, while others can suggest if your family has a history of certain conditions. It’s an immensely complicated topic, one that isn’t always clear to discover health conditions. Finding a gene mutation through genetic testing, for example, has a fairly direct association with some form of cancer. For a different health issue, such as diabetes, there are other environmental and genetic factors at play that can make an association more ambiguous. “Our understanding of genetics has become a lot better, and the application of genetics has become more relevant to patients,” said Nicole Wood, a certified genetic counselor with Sarasota Memorial Cancer Institute. “It’s become less of a theorized ‘This is how these results may impact you at some point’ and more practical ‘These are the results.’ And these are what we can do with that information

and have a direct impact on their health and their well-being.” Finding that balance between your body and nature and nurture is an ongoing craft, and scientists and health professionals are relying on genetic testing more every day. Sarasota Sports Medicine, a medical clinic founded in 2012 by Orioles chiropractor Ken Kaufman, has started utilizing genetic testing to create more specialized nutrition and exercise routines for its members. The hope is that instead of trying different diets and programs that might not be right for certain people, genetic testing can show the best breakdown proteins, micronutrients, carbs and other factors for individual people. “The genetic testing gives us a tool and gives the client the tool to know, ‘OK, this is what I need to do,’” Kaufman said. “Somebody follows a certain diet and invariably runs into a brick wall and won’t progress as fast as they had hoped. And so they abandon it because they think, ‘Maybe this isn’t for me.’ Whereas now with a genetic test, they know psychologically, this is the one for me.” The hope is that the more precise nutrient and exercise regimens can result in faster and more noticeable improvements, through knowing what food groups and nutrients you’re deficient in and understanding what types of exercise are more productive. Sarasota Sports Medicine has partnered with Nutrigenomix, a genetic test provider, for the fitness and nutrition tests. The test gauges nutrient metabolism, weight management, body composition, eating habits and more. Genetic testing remains a complicated subject, so we asked local health professionals to share insight on the topic. What is the test like? Although the genetic information the tests parse through is complicated, the actual way they

are administered is not. Genetic testing is done most frequently through blood samples and cheek swabs, two relatively safe practices. The collected DNA is delivered to a laboratory where technicians look for a specified criteria, be it a possibility of cancer, autism or other conditions. Wood said results then take typically two to three weeks to come back. “The genes that we would evaluate are different, but we’re still measuring the DNA from the white blood cells in your blood or the lymphocytes in your cheek,” Wood said. “We have 20,000 genes in each of ourselves. So when we send off a sample, regardless of what it is — blood, skin, saliva — all of that information is contained in every single one of the cells. So we just tell the lab what we want them to focus on.” A common mistake Wood recommends patients avoid is eating or drinking before a cheek swab test. Technicians are looking to parse through your DNA, not so much burger genes. What are the benefits? Being aware of your body gives you more ability to take care of yourself. Knowing you’re susceptible or positive for certain conditions can push you toward treatment and prevention plans. A negative result likewise can offer peace of mind. Knowing if you are, or are not, susceptible for genetic conditions can also be an important part of family planning. Having an idea of what diseases you have a higher risk of, especially when cross-referencing it with a family history, can give someone repose or push them to making changes in their lives to avoid developing illnesses in the future. People at risk for an inherited

cancer gene often have family members diagnosed with cancer before the age of 50, so Wood recommends being tested before that age. What are the risks? It should be noted that the procedure for prenatal testing has a small but real risk of miscarriage. There are also limitations. Although a test can show the possibility of having a condition, it has no way of telling you if you will show symptoms, the severity of those symptoms or whether it will worsen over time. How much does it cost? Genetic testing can be covered by health insurance plans, though some customers pay out-ofpocket to avoid their coverage being affected. Sarasota Sports Medicine offers the genetic test with a consultation and a report of findings for $549. Can you figure it out yourself using at-home DNA tests? At-home DNA tests, also known as direct-to-consumer tests, are something of a different breed than the testing done at health institutions. Rather than visiting a hospital or clinic and having the test be done by a medical professional, these tests are sold to consumers directly — you might have seen them advertised online and can buy them in stores. There, you send in a DNA sample and have the results sent back to you. A particularly popular subset of at-home kits are ancestry tests, which track your genetic lineage. It’s easier, but Wood said the evidence from those tests is more anecdotal. “It’s not used for medical purposes, but it is interesting

for a lot of people,” she said. The validity of genetic tests sold directly to customers can be harder to ascertain. Laboratories that have healthbased testing fall under federal regulations known as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, as well as state restrictions. The CLIA rules are meant to control quality of testing procedures and personnel to ensure proper validity. Wood does note there are labcreated hereditary cancer tests you can purchase online that are useful if you don’t have a genetic counselor nearby. The U.S. National Library of Medicine states many direct-toconsumer tests are not CLIAcertified and currently have little regulation, and it might be best to consult with a health professional before ordering one.

Why is genetic testing more beneficial than just knowing your family history? It’s hard to know everything about your family’s health. Wood said it’s far safer to deal with science. “We walk through their personal risk factors for cancers and talk about their family history and as much detail as we can,” Wood said. “Nobody knows everything about their relatives. So we work [with what] we have, but we try and get as much detail there as possible.” For those trying to start a family and wanting to know what diseases or conditions their children could carry, Wood recommends getting tested. For more ambiguous maladies, such as diabetes or Alzheimer’s disease, knowing the family history might end up being the most beneficial.

What You Need to Know ABOUT CANNABIDIOL & CBD PURITY Gerry Letendre, RPh, MBA, CHt

Numerous individuals using Cannabidiol for specific health needs and personal health goals find it beneficial for a gamut of conditions, but a few common ones are: • Pain • Anxiety • Stress

• PTSD • IBS • Crohn’s Disease

Sarasota Specialty Pharmacy and Wellness Center uses Pure Cannabidiol that is closely monitored and regulated at >98% powder. It’s critical to know what you’re getting when you purchase CBD products. For example, when buying CBD Oil at a gas station or hair salon, the purity of the product is very questionable. It may contain harmful contaminants, chemicals, or fungi. The majority of CBD products on the market are not regulated, so manufacturers can essentially label the bottle any way they want in order to market the product, even by potentially using false claims.

With a reputable PCCA member compounding pharmacy you can always trust that quality and dosage are pure and accurate, and that products are prescribed specifically to each patient’s needs, not a “One size fits all.” Our PCCA Cannabidiol (>98% Powder) fulfills these requirements: • It is made by an FDA-registered and inspected manufacturer in full compliance with CGMPs • It is contained within an FDA-approved product (Epidiolex®) • It is a pharmaceutical-grade, highpurity, synthetic cannabidiol powder with a minimum assay (purity) of 98% that is accompanied by a valid certificate of analysis. It isn’t a controlled substance according to the U.S. DEA, and it has a delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content specification of less than 0.1%. Because our cannabidiol powder is synthetic, there is not a concern that it would contain pesticides or other plant components. The assay on our most recent lot showed 100.3% cannabidiol.

ATTENTION PHYSICIANS If you are a physician and would like to know more about prescribing CBD for your patients, please contact Gerry (owner and lead pharmacist) directly for more information or recommendations on formulas. Having cannabidiol powder available for use as an API in compounding is valuable to patients, prescribers and pharmacists. Finally, prescribers can have confidence in the quality and dosing accuracy of the cannabidiol being used by their patients and can be more personalized in their approach. Most importantly, the patient will be treated under medical supervision and can be monitored appropriately.

THROUGH DIVORCE By Freya Robbins, CDFA™

Peace is something that seems to be in short supply these days. It feels like there is an argument waiting for each of us at every turn. Any expression of what we believe or feel seems like an invitation for someone to disagree. Of course, everyone has a right to their opinion! But a disagreement doesn’t have to be an argument and the decision to part ways doesn’t have to affect your peace. This sense of walking on eggshells is something many of us experience before and during a divorce. It can feel as if any misstep creates an explosion of emotion and words that can’t be unsaid. Over time this can really wear on your well being and it is important to realize there is an alternative. You can end things positively and without the added stress and financial strain of a contentious, litigated divorce. As a CDFA™, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, I specialize in helping people see clearly both for the present and for the future. I understand that when we get to the end of a relationship, we just want it over. However, what you agree upon now will affect you and your family years down the line. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator, I have guided divorcing couples through the process for over 15 years. Drawing from my own life experiences in marriage, parenting, divorce and step-parenting, I understand the intensity of the head vs. heart battle and do my best to help couples understand that keeping Peace is the best option. Our goal is to help create a settlement that fully addresses the divorcing couple’s long term financial and strategic needs. My role includes providing you both with expert financial guidance, enhancing communication with your spouse and other professionals and, most importantly, creating amicable solutions. We help divorcing couples understand the reality of their situation and reach beyond an emotional reaction to what’s truly in everyone’s rational best interest,

s local school children have been out of brickand-mortar schools since March, they and their parents have had to rethink how to fulfill daily aspects of life, such as school work and socialization with friends. But there is perhaps one segment of daily school life that has been overlooked: exercise.

A is for Analysis. After the emotional component is settled, divorce is often the largest financial transaction you will ever make. It is important to have a fair and thorough understanding of your financial situation. C is for Conversations. The ability to discuss these things calmly, honestly and thoroughly is the key to the mediation process. Don’t worry if that doesn’t feel like something you can do right now! It’s my job to help you do this! E is for everything else, which can cover a wide range of details, from refinancing, alimony, child support, credit card debt, making sure liabilities and deeds are changed, as well as how to operate emotionally and financially while in the divorce process.

While at school, students get exercise from physical education courses, recess, extracurricular activities and even transitioning between classes. But working from home for two months followed by an extended summer break might have created unhealthy habits for children. Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services state that children age 6 and older need at least one hour a day of physical activity, with most of the hour dedicated to moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. Typically, this is fulfilled by Florida Department of Education standards that require 150 minutes of physical education

weekly for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. However, while students remain at home, they might lack the motivation to get up and move one hour a day. Nick Metcalfe, the sports and camp coordinator for the Berlin Our Y and teacher of the Y’s Fit Kids program, said that parents should strive to set goals and healthy habits for their children, not just for now but also to create a healthy habit going forward. “When it comes to children and exercise, just fitness in general, it is one of the key most important steps for them, especially when it comes to development,” Metcalfe said. “If they’re not doing daily exercises or an activity every day, it’s not going to help them when it comes to developing muscles and strong bones.” Research from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that about 24% of U.S. children ages 6-17 participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The CDC research states that regular physical activity can help children improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control their weight, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Further, regular adolescent exercise reduces the risk of developing such conditions as heart disease, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and obesity. Aside from health benefits, children who are physically active tend to have better grades, cognitive performance and school attendance. “If you have a lot on your mind, or you’re stressed out, physical activity can help release that, which helps students focus back

EXERCISE KIDS NEED The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children should receive 60 or more minutes of exercise daily. Here’s how that should be broken down: n Aerobic activities: Most of the 60 minutes should be either moderate or vigorous intensity aerobic activity and should include vigorous-intensity activity at least three days a week. n Muscle-strengthening activities: As part of their 60 minutes, children should include musclestrengthening physical activity at least three days a week. n Bone-strengthening activities: As part of their 60 minutes, children should include bone-strengthening physical activity at least three days a week.

on school,” Metcalfe said. He said it’s important for parents to help set healthy habits as well. HHS reports that less than 5% of U.S. adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity daily. “Culturally, we have been very inactive in recent years and even more so in recent months,” he said. “If you’re an adult, and you have health practices, your child is more likely to follow the same footsteps as you, so it relies on the parent to be a good influence.” No matter what exercise parents choose to integrate into their family’s lives, Metcalfe said it’s best to start off slow. “The first day you work out, you won’t be able to do the things you were able to do 10 years ago,” he said. “You could actually end up hurting yourself rather than do good, so take it on a day-today basis.”

Local spaces make social distancing a snap

BEST IN THE EVENING NATHAN BENDERSON PARK

For any of your exercise needs, head to Nathan Benderson Park, especially in the evenings. The closer to sunset, the emptier the park. There are four parking lots at the corners of the long lake, so your car doesn’t even have to be near others if you don’t want. A paved trail and a shell trail wind around the lake for 3.5 miles, and both are wide and make avoiding fellow exercisers easy. For stationary exercise, there’s plenty of space near the northwest and finish tower parking lots.

ust like The Chicks were in 1998, we’re looking for Wide Open Spaces. This year has brought a new, all-too-familiar meaning to “stir-crazy,” and getting out of the house never sounded so good. But with the coronavirus pandemic still raging around the country and especially the state, it’s preferable to do so near as few people as possible. We’ve rounded up a few places to get in a run, walk or bike ride; do some yoga; or try a HIIT workout while being seen by as few other humans, along with the best times to do so.

AVOID IN THE EVENING

75 AVOID IN THE MORNING

BEST IN THE AFTERNOON

RINGLING BRIDGE

CELERY FIELDS

This is perhaps the quintessential Sarasota view, which is exactly why you should avoid the Ringling Bridge most times of day, but especially in the morning. Walkers, runners and anyone looking to get a little fresh air and a good view are here unless you show up before 7 a.m. — maybe. The bordered sidewalks along the bridge make 6 feet of space difficult (perhaps impossible) when you need to pass someone. Try the heat of the day here, if you’re brave.

Afternoon is maybe the only time you could reliably avoid others at this popular park. Runners abound in the mornings and sunset-watchers at night, but in the middle of a Florida summer day, you might be the only one bold enough to brave the heat. This park features one of Sarasota’s only hills, so this is an excellent place to get your heart rate up with a run or brisk hike.

MOST BEACHES

To avoid tourists and sunbathers, the only time you might be able to reasonably social distance while on the move is early, early morning before sunbathers are moving about. It’s not a great idea to try to get some exercise on the beach at night, when sunset seekers slink to the sands. Unless you can find a secluded spot of sand for yoga or another stationary workout, it’s best to skip the beach for now.

Hit this park before 9 a.m., and you’re golden. Too much later, and the park gets busier, especially on weekends. However, the wide trails offer a lot of space to spread out, so even if you pass others, you can keep your distance. The trails and shade are plentiful, which makes it a perfect place to go on a long run or walk without heating up too quickly.

EYE CARE to Our Specialists

Student-athlete uses Instagram to share fitness motivation. MARK BERGIN STAFF WRITER

Sage Lyons said the coronavirus pandemic has allowed her to focus on her goals. The Sarasota High School alumna has spent the summer training for her upcoming NAIA cross-country season as a student-athlete at Webber International University in Babson Park. Her daily routine this summer has consisted of waking up, walking her chocolate lab named Coco, drinking coffee and running 5-7 miles. Her favorite place to exercise is Nathan Benderson Park, but she said she also enjoys running the John Ringling Causeway or around the Siesta Key Beach Pavilion. After Lyons’ morning run, she typically replenishes with healthy foods and rehydrates before doing some sort of afternoon or evening workout. “Sometimes in the evenings, I go to Body Heat Yoga Sarasota and do a yoga class because it’s really beneficial doing hot yoga for your limbs after a run, especially after a hard workout in the summer,” she said. Lyons said her goal is to run a 5K in about 18 minutes. It means

her mile splits would be less than six minutes. Lyons is also a member of the school’s track and field team but isn’t sure which events she’ll compete in yet. In April, Lyons started an Instagram page, @SRQ_Fitness, where she posts running tips, ab workouts and inspiration. Lyons said her Instagram page has allowed her to begin to establish the reputability of her athletic expertise on social media. “Everyone’s getting into fitness these days, so I thought it would be a good idea to help people get into fitness and grow,” Lyons said. Lyons said her goal is to become a physical trainer after graduation. When Lyons returns to campus, she plans to continue posting to her Instagram page. “Staying on track with myself and my Instagram page, even when I go back to school, I think it would be really beneficial,” she said.
