After the revenue ranking, we list the top 500 companies by industry, starting on page 44, as well as alphabetically starting on page 53. The final three lists, starting on page 60, show the region’s 50 largest employers, 50 companies with the largest revenue declines, and 50 fastest-growing companies. Perusing this year’s Gulf Coast 500 list, I’m reminded of all the stories we’ve run about the companies behind these numbers, as well as intrigued to find out more about others we haven’t covered yet. The list before you is full of information, and — most importantly for some — leads. It is the only one that ranks companies from Tampa to Naples by annual revenue, and the only one that lists so many. To make it the most useful, we’ve sliced the data a few ways. The list beginning on page 4 ranks the top 500 companies in eight counties by their 2011 revenues in millions, based on each company’s fiscal year. For consistency and comparability, we asked for gross revenues. We also asked industries with pass-through revenues, such as Realtors, mortgage brokers, insurance and advertising agencies, that they only report gross commissions. Similarly, PEOs were asked to report gross leased billings. Most of the information was gathered
