ABOUT

The Florida Winefest & Auction is a positive force for children in need in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Over the past 26 years, thanks to some of the most generous and enthusiastic volunteers and supporters, this nonprofit organization has held fun wine and food events to raise funds for charitable children’s programs under the Caring for Children Charities umbrella.

Twenty board members, hundreds of volunteers and one staff member work year-round to ensure guests at all events have a great time. The festival offers wine experiences for the beginner to the serious collector.

On the cover: “Perfectly Paired” Brendan Coudal, who has called the Sarasota area his home for 30 years, is well-known for mid-century styled paintings of pretty gals and mermaids.

To create an image for the 2016 Florida Winefest & Auction, Coudal painted something that highlights the wine-focused event and the magic of Southwest Florida, and used his wife as his muse.

“I was excited to create something special for an organization that helps so many in our community,” he says. “I named it ‘Perfectly Paired’ because what goes better together than a beautiful blonde mermaid and a luscious glass of wine?”

SAM WILLIAMSON Williamson Wines Growing up in the family business can have its perks — especially when work responsibilities include trips to more than a dozen wine-tasting rooms to learn how to create the best possible tasting experience. For Sam Williamson, of Williamson Wines, it was all part of learning the family trade — winemaking.

“Growing up, I think I had a very different childhood than a lot of people,” says Williamson. “As a

When Williamson’s parents retired from the technology industry in Silicon Valley, they made an unusual career change. They began making the wines they personally enjoyed — initially merlot and chardonnay — and eventually, they grew to produce 34 different wines.

And Sam was there throughout the process, learning more than just fine-wine appreciation.

“The thing I learned from my parents, and one of our biggest focuses, is food-and-wine pairing,” he says. “All these wines are lovely by themselves. But when you pair them with the right food, you get a third set of flavors that neither could provide on its own. It’s what we call the ‘wow factor.’”

About: USF Sarasota-Manatee Culinary Innovation Lab Exciting things are happening on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch, at the University of South Florida, SarasotaManatee’s Culinary Innovation Lab (CIL). Here, students from the school’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Leadership learn in a unique classroom setting that doubles as an event venue.

In 2013, the CIL opened to transform theory into experience for hospitality students. A demonstration kitchen, formal dining room and a magnificent bar set an elegant tone for students and guests alike. Restaurant and Event Management, Beer Science, and Introduction to Food Production Management classes are taught here throughout the school year. Classes are interactive, often including guest speakers from local restaurants and hotels and field trips to local partners.

Students spend time in the classroom, but also work CIL events. These range from formal sit-down dinners to casual receptions. The students are introduced to both “front of the house” and “back of the house” activities – washing dishes after a fourcourse, 35-person demonstration dinner is a humbling experience for many.

TINY HANDS FOUNDATION The Tiny Hands Foundation wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the Florida Winefest & Auction for their very kind and generous support.

We are pleased to share with you how your gift has benefitted underprivileged children and families in our community this year.

Our mission is simple: to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children in our community. We believe in fostering an exchange of generosity and gratitude between the fortunate and those who are in need. We lead several charitable initiatives each year that provide assistance to local children and families that are most in need.

During August, the Back-toSchool Backpack Brigade provides thousands of new back-

packs filled with school supplies to school children. In November, the Teddy Bear Brigade provides thousands of teddy bears for Sarasota and Bradenton Police Department patrol cars to be given out by police officers to comfort children in distress. In December, the Holiday Basket Brigade provides thousands of holiday gift baskets to families.

Last year, the Holiday Basket Brigade provided more than 1,100 gift baskets filled with a holiday turkey, food and toys to local children and families in need. More than 400 volunteers joined us to help assemble, decorate and deliver baskets. Many of these baskets are given to partner nonprofit organizations to distribute to families they know of that are most in need.

The Laurel Civic Association feeds about 80 kids a day after school. The program also has 127 children in its afterschool homework program.

SHAMROCK SHIVER Florida Winefest & Auction/Caring for Children Charities finds creative ways throughout the year to raise needed funds.

One of those ways is the Shamrock Shiver Charity Plunge.

What began as a whim among beach pals has crested into a growing wave of community generosity focused on our area’s disadvantaged kids. JAMES BEARD DINNER Featuring Sarasota’s own Florida Winefest & Auction board members Executive Chefs Chris Covelli and Paul Mattison Dec. 3, 2016, in New York City A selection of fine wines will be served with this six-course menu sponsored by Sarasota’s Florida Winefest & Auction.
