The changes began about 12 years ago, but intensified over the last six years. At first, Stephen had a hard time remembering things. Then, their children began to notice changes that Joelle either hadn’t noticed or for which she made excuses.

He forgot to pay bills and would get lost while driving.

“I started noticing notes, lots of notes,” she said. “He was trying to remind himself.”

Joelle had Stephen’s memory tested. By the third year, it had declined enough that he no longer could drive safely.

The couple continued to go out, although Stephen, a former pharmacist, became incontinent. He gradually became more interested in looking at lights and fans than conversing about some of his favorite topics, politics and religion.

Joelle continued caring for him at home until it was no longer safe to do so. He moved into Anchin Pavilion nearly two years ago.

“You think you are a super person, but you need support,” Joelle says. “Your friends are there for you, but they aren’t there living in your house. People have to ask for help.”

Joelle connected with a support group, which she said is critical for a caretaker’s well-being (see sidebar).

“You talk with people going through the same thing,” she said. “We helped each other through this.”

Joelle plans to continue to visit her husband, whether he remembers her.

“I consider this part of our life,” Joelle says. “Our wedding vows are for sickness and in health, till death do us part. Am I happy he is like this? No. When (his dementia began and) he started (feeling down about it), I said, ‘There are worse things.’ I try to make it as positive as possible.”

CARETAKER CARE

Research shows caretakers of persons with dementia have higher incidences of depression, falls, injuries and illnesses than non-caregivers.

Research shows that if caretakers have support services in place, such as help lines, support groups and counseling, then those risk factors are reduced, said Gloria Smith, head of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “(Data) also shows that caregivers who have that support network also delay placement of their loved one in a facility by almost a year and a half,” Smith said.

“It’s very important. You can’t do this alone.”

Simulation creates dementia reality for caretaker training Mederi Caretenders uses a simulation to help caretakers understand how to relate to dementia patients.

SARASOTA — Sue Chandler knows that a little empathy can go a long way, especially when dealing with dementia patients.

As executive director of Mederi Caretenders, a subsidiary of Almost Family, Chandler and her team want nurses, doctors and caretakers to know what dementia patients deal with on a daily basis.

Mederi offers a portable dementia simulation program, which it sets up at health fairs, at assisted-living facilities and for families wishing to better understand how the disease affects their loved ones.

Typically, Mederi staff sets it up in a dimly lit room with strobe lights and props. Caretakers don scratched safety glasses, gloves with fingers taped together and headphones playing noises such as sirens and other loud sounds, as they set out to complete a set of simple tasks — pulling a belt through the belt loop of a pair of pants or matching pairs of colored socks, for example.

“It gives caregivers a better understanding of what that person with dementia has to go through on a daily basis — what they have to go through just getting dressed,” Chandler said. “This is really an educational process.

When they understand better, it decreases their frustration.”

Chandler said the experience also helps caretakers understand how to modify their own behaviors, such as walking up to talk with a dementia patient rather than calling him from across the room.

“It’s such a great tool,” she said.

Horticulturist Alex Barth, at Your Farm and Garden nursery, says starter kits are helpful. He recommends using a rectangular container.

Maintaining an edible garden

If your container garden is outside, it can be susceptible to the weather or pests.

Alyssa Vinson, program coordinator for the University of Florida/IFAS Extension office in Sarasota, recommends organic methods for pest control and integrated pest management. IPM is a method of eliminating pests by first identifying the pest and seeking the least-harmful way to treat it before resorting to chemical solutions. Common pests in container gardens are aphids, a small soft-body insect.

“Most of the time when you have an aphid infestation, ladybugs will find your plant and the ladybugs eat the aphids,” Vinson said. “So if you have aphids, keep your eyes out for ladybugs, and if you see a ladybug, they’ll take care of the problem.”

For other pests, Vinson recommends using compost or mixing biodegradable soap and water to spray on plants. With this method you should always wash any fruits or vegetables before eating.
