Battle Against Breast Cancer As area residents welcome the fall, they also ready themselves for a battle against breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The American Cancer Society estimated there would be 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer (cancer that spreads from the point of origin and grows into the surrounding breast tissue) and another 64,640 cases of in situ breast cancer (breast

cancer in which abnormal cells line the breast ducts but do not grow beyond the layer where they originated) in 2013.

Each year, about 39,400 women die from the disease. It is most common in women ages 50 and older.

Lucy Fox and Connie Keen are breast cancer survivors who will participate in upcoming events to raise support for the fight against the disease. Here are their stories.

Keen doesn’t let cancer slow her down A longtime world traveler and adventurous-type, Connie Keen used her positive attitude and information from experts to fight breast cancer.

Growing up, Connie Keen knew she wanted to travel.

Keen was born in the United States and traveled to Greece with her parents when she was a child.

She saw tourists with backpacks traveling around Greece.

“I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll do that, backpack around countries someday,’” says Keen, an East County resident.

When she was 34 years old, she traveled around Europe for 40 days by herself.

But the woman who felt she was born to travel stopped in her tracks in March 2008, when she discovered a small hard bump on the side of her right breast.

Her diagnosis: breast cancer.

Keen switched into survival mode yet found ways to stay active. She participates in local

events, such as the Dragon Boat Festival (see sidebar), and also attends a women’s group at her church, St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church.

“When you go through a traumatic experience, your whole life changes,” Keen says. “It’s like an out-of-body experience. You lose your hair, your eyebrows and even your eyelashes; you’re hairless from top to bottom. When you look in the mirror, you’re a different person. But you move past it, because there’s no going back.”

She believes that by keeping a positive attitude, researching information on breast cancer through the American Cancer Society and other local resources, as well as listening to their doctors, women can win the fight against breast cancer.

She has been cancer-free since she had her breast removed about five years ago.

And as she lets her shoulderlength, curly dark hair continue to grow, Keen has gained confidence and laughs as much as she can, she says.

She also works to get back to her adventurous ways and looks forward to her life’s next chapter.

She doesn’t want her disease to inhibit her decision-making any more.

“I’m one of those people who always moves on,” Keen says. “I don’t want my disease to define me. Breast cancer was just something I experienced in life.

I’m not letting it run the rest of my life.”

ACS employee becomes a patient About one year ago, Lucy Fox went from helping others battle breast cancer to fighting it herself. Today, she further advocates for the cause.

As an administrative assistant for the local American Cancer Society branch, Sarasota resident Lucy Fox made a career of assisting cancer patients.

Then, she became one.

She received her breast cancer diagnosis following her annual mammogram in September 2013.

“I was hearing the news for the first time over the phone,” Fox says. “I spent about 20 minutes pacing the floor and not knowing what to do.”

Fox tapped into her knowledge from working for the American Cancer Society for 14 years. She said the resources made available

to her gave her confidence and provided mental support.

“One out of eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime,” Fox says. “I thought about my sister and my niece, my friends and my cousins, and I was glad it was me instead of them. Maybe I saved them in some way.”

Fox had a lumpectomy — a procedure that removes the cancerous mass — Oct. 24. But her fight still wasn’t over. She needed chemotherapy and radiation treatments to help prevent the cancer cells from returning.

She lost her hair. And she scheduled her once-a-week chemotherapy sessions on

Wednesdays, so the nausea and other side effects could manifest over the weekend.

“I couldn’t miss work; I needed something to focus on,” Fox says.

The treatments raised her survival rate from 86% to about 98% — odds for which she is thankful.

Today, she is free of cancer and will participate in this year’s Making Strides Walk Against Breast Cancer event (see sidebar). She looks forward to her official cancerfree anniversary — 2018.

She sports a pixie cut as her hair continues to grow back — a reminder that she’s still here to tell her story, she says.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED Sarasota and Manatee County residents will join in the fight against breast cancer during two fundraising events for the cause.

Next month, the American Cancer Society will host its annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, while the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission will host the Dragon Boat Festival.

Both events raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

The 3.1-mile Making Strides walk starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 18, at the Sarasota Polo Club, 8201 Polo Club Lane, Sarasota. Registration

starts at 7:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to raise money for the cause prior to the event.

Last year, more than 8,000 people participated. Organizers hope to have a similar turnout this year as they attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ largest human breast cancer ribbon. Seven thousand participants will be needed to accomplish the task after the walk.

The fourth annual Dragon Boat Festival follows from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26. Pre-festival events, including a pre-festival camp and team practice sessions, run from Oct. 20 to Oct. 23.

The festival will open with a ceremony from 5 to 6 p.m. Oct. 24, at Nathan Benderson Park, 5851 Nathan Benderson Circle, Sarasota, and races will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 25 to Oct. 26.

A Pink Paddlers Party will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 25, at Lakewood Ranch Main Street, as well.

Sarasota cardiologist Dr. Mahfouz El Shahawy has earned international recognition as a principal investigator and coauthor in a landmark clinical trail.

El Shahawy was recognized for his work using a new investigational agent called Alirocumab for treating high bad cholesterol during the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology Aug. 31, in Barcelona, Spain.

El Shahawy, medical director of the Cardiovascular Health Assessment Center in Sarasota and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Florida and University of South Florida, worked on a paper presented at the late-breaking El Shahawy clinical trial session on coronary artery disease and lipids at the meeting. The paper showed the effects of Alirocumab in reducing the high bad cholesterol by more than 64% on top of the maximum tolerated dose of statin taken by 2,341 high-risk cardiovascular subjects.

One food three ways

BY PAM EUBANKS If you’re looking for something new to add to your menu this fall, try beets.

The root vegetable can be prepared in dozens of ways, including raw in salads, roasted, broiled, steamed, grilled and baked.

“Beets are a delicious and often overlooked fall vegetable that offers tremendous health benefits and adds versatility to your menu,” says Pam Mathis, a dietician and licensed wellness coach in Lakewood Ranch. “An ancient vegetable, beet greens were originally the only part of the plant that was eaten. However, now we know that the root itself and its juice offer wonderful flavors and nutrition, as well.”

Beets are a good source of vitamin C, fiber, potassium for muscle and nerve function, magnesium for smooth muscle contraction, manganese for liver, kidney and pancreas function and folate, which promotes cardiac health.

Beets are a higher carbohydrate vegetable, so Mathis says you should consume them in moderation. Individuals prone to kidney stones should avoid beets, too, because they are a good source of oxalates, which can cause kidney stones in predisposed individuals.

DIRECTIONS

1 small red beet 1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 4 garlic cloves, halved 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons walnut oil 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

2. Leave root and 1-inch stem on beet; scrub with a brush. Wrap beet in foil.

Place on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 35 minutes. Add walnuts and garlic to pan. Bake 7 minutes, or until nuts are toasted.

3. Cool for 10 minutes. Trim off beet root; rub off skin. Cut beet into quarters.

4. Place garlic in a food processor; process until finely chopped. Add beet and process until finely chopped.

Add walnuts, lemon rind and remaining ingredients. Process until smooth.

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 3 tablespoons shallots, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon honey 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 medium beets, cooked and quartered 6 cups fresh arugula 1/2 cup walnuts, toasted, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup dried cranberries or dried cherries 1/2 avocado, cubed 3 ounces soft fresh goat cheese crumbled

INGREDIENTS 1 large apple, cored 1 medium banana, peeled 1 cup whole strawberries 2 cups beet greens, chopped 4-6 ounces of water

DIRECTIONS

Combine ingredients in blender.

Process until smooth.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Line a baking sheet with foil. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

2. Whisk the vinegar, shallots and honey in a medium bowl to blend. Gradually whisk in the oil. Season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper, to taste.

3. Toss the beets in a bowl with enough dressing to coat.

4. Place the beets on the prepared baking sheet and roast until the beets are slightly caramelized, stirring occasionally, about 12 minutes. Set aside and cool.

5. Toss the arugula, walnuts and cranberries in a large bowl with enough vinaigrette to coat.

6. Season the salad, to taste, with salt and pepper.

7. Mound the salad atop four plates. Arrange the beets around the salad. Sprinkle with the avocado and crumbled goat cheese, and serve.

BY PAM EUBANKS For Bethany Laney, leaving her newborn son, Asher, at home wasn’t an option when she was ready to go back to work teaching part-time at the School of Russian Ballet.

At the time, Asher was about 3 months old and still breastfed every two-and-a-half hours.

And Laney, a stay-at-home mom, also wasn’t ready to hand him over to another caretaker.

What happened next seemed the natural thing to do.

“I would wear him to class,” Laney says, noting she would secure him in a carrier on her chest when he was younger. Now that he’s 11 months old she wears him on her back most days. “You can do basically anything baby-wearing.”

Laney, 25, went back to work instructing her students, ages 5 to 12. Their parents were understanding.

As some of the mothers watched, they saw a fun opportunity to exercise.

“I had some moms ask if I could do a class for baby-wearers,” Laney says.

So, last month, Laney began teaching a baby-wearing ballet class for adults. Lessons are modified — no jumping, fast spins or other moves that could be unsafe for mother and child.

“Your center definitely shifts when you have a baby on you,” Laney says. “Your balance is tricky, but it’s doable.”

One session costs $10. Mothers wear their infants in the carrier of their choice while they practice ballet.

“We just deal with it; we’re all moms,” Laney says. “By halfway through the class, most babies are sleeping.”

Laney says ballet is a perfect exercise for new moms because it strengthens their bodies overall by strengthening core muscles and improving posture. Many gyms will not allow infants under 6 months old, so it also allows mothers to move forward with conditioning their bodies post-birth.

She also believes it can aid in correcting a condition called diastasis recti abdominis, the separation of the abdominal muscle into right and left halves.

Laney smiles as she guides the dancers through their first set of exercises. The experience of dancing with your child is unique.

“Having a baby snuggle against you, I think it’s a very sweet bonding experience with mom and baby,” Laney says.
