Public schools in Florida are in the midst of a whirlwind of change in standards, instruction, testing, choice, accountability and evaluation.

As I anticipate the start of a new school year, though, I focus on the things that remain constant in our schools: the joyful energy of the students, the dedication and talent of the teachers, the pervasive optimism that we are building a better future together. Every first day of school opens an exciting new chapter in the life of the community and every child in it.

Each fall I recall why I was

drawn to being an educator as a young girl and have loved every minute of my career. I am doubly blessed to be part of a community that values education so highly and is so generous in supporting the success of every new generation of learners.

In March, voters renewed a local millage that provides the “margin of excellence” that keeps Sarasota County continually among the highestperforming school districts in Florida. That community support is a key element in our being ranked third in Florida in student achievement — one of only five districts among 67 in the state that maintained an A grade in 2013, and one of

THE HEALTH GURU Beverly Girard, SARASOTA COUNTY SCHOOLS FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES For Sarasota County Schools Food and Nutrition Services Director Beverly Girard, the last year has been one to remember.

Although most people would say winning Outstanding Director of the Year Award from the national School Nutrition Association was the highlight of their year, Girard is most excited about the programs she, with the help and support of the community, has spearheaded, such as the Farm to School program.

“Our goal is to prepare children to succeed at school,” says Girard who is a “farm kid” at heart and grew up in rural Indiana. “I adore the entire concept of farm to school; I get it.”

In December, the program,

which was started in 2007, was awarded one of four nationwide farm school grants. Farm to School connects local farms and students through field trips and delivers produce for school meals.

“I hope the district will have its own farm one day,” Girard says.

In May 2013, Girard and her department piloted a monthlong supper program at three schools in the district.

The program was so successful, the district picked it up as a permanent feature. It is now serving 13 schools.

This academic year the program will be featured at 14 schools.

“The more we can do to expand the reach of feeding our children and providing nutrition education, the better,” she says.

Girard and her team, along with local nonprofits, including All Faiths Food Bank, work together to take care of children not only during the school year but also during the summer months.

With the help of All Faiths, the department’s Summer Feeding Program, which was established in 1996, has grown by 50% — ­ from 30 sites to 48 in the last year.

“The partnership has been northing short of incredible,” Girard says. “Our goal was to do everything we could to find out where the children were and feed them.”

Currently, Girard is working on her newest ideas for the upcoming school year, including an interactive website, called Nutri-Slice. There, parents canlearn more about their children’s school lunches.

INNOVATION: Booker High School’s recent $58 million redevelopment not only changed the North Orange Avenue high school’s campus, but also its education program.

With the introduction of one of its most innovative additions, the mock courtroom, Booker High now offers its students the chance to learn more about law and the criminal-justice system with the Law Academy Program.

The four-year law academy encourages students to bring class notes to life with the state-of-the-art facility. The courtroom is the only one of its kind in Sarasota.

“It’s a way to create realistic situations for the students to learn in,” says Law Academy Coordinator Michelle Anderson, who says the courtroom allows students to experience what they would normally only read about. “(Students) can take on each other in these roles; it allows them to think like an attorney, a judge, a witness, plaintiff or defendant.”

Anderson and Booker High officials worked closely with the Sarasota Bar Association Diversity Committee to create the courtroom. With the help of the Sarasota Bar Association Diversity Committee, the

Newtown Redevelopment Committee, Sarasota County School Board and local attorney offices, Anderson raised $30,000 to furnish and develop the room.

When Booker’s school year began last fall, Anderson and her class were ready for their day in court.

Students study and hold mock trails ranging in difficulty, from serious, privacy rights, to the fun, a trial against Goldie Locks for breaking and entering and destruction of property (Locks was found guilty on both charges).

Anderson sources the mock trials from the Florida Law Related Educated Association and spends months with the students researching the different aspects of a case.

Although knowledge is key, Anderson thinks the students’ enthusiasm is priceless.

“Seeing them be excited, engaged and looking forward to the courtroom is my favorite part,” she says. “Being in the courtroom alters the way they carry themselves; they take their roles seriously. There’s nothing quite as valuable as that tangible real world I’m-inthis-space-and-learning-at-thesame-time opportunity that the mock courtroom gives them.”

“You meet a lot of amazing people,” says Lakey. “I think (giving back) brings out the good in people.”

In May, The Dream Team held its first official fundraiser, “Dress Down Day,” during the last week of school. Lakey says he expected about 20 people to dress in The Dream Team’s color of blue.

However, when he arrived at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences, more than 150 students sported the color.

“Everyone just got excited about helping out,” he says.

Although his family thinks Lakey should take time to focus on himself and his new setting, Lakey already thinks about how to introduce The Dream Team to his new school.

He hopes to organize a schoolwide fundraiser and amass more volunteers. His goal is to raise $5,000 this year.

“I’m excited for a wider group of people I can inspire,” he says.

Andrew Lakey has always wanted to give back.

“I’ve always had a thing for fundraising,” Lakey says.

Lakey, an incoming freshman at Suncoast Polytechnical High School, launched The Dream Team, a group that organizes fundraisers for children’s charities, in April. He had previously done fundraising for cancer charities after he finished chemotherapy for brain cancer in 2012 at the age of 11. In 2009, Lakey was diagnosed with juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma, and after his cancer was deemed in remission, he began focusing on giving back to charities for children with similar challenges.

“I really wanted to try to help people who were going through the same thing that I was,” he says.

Before he officially began working on The Dream Team in January, Lakey held fundraisers, including a car wash that raised $1,000 and a carnival that raised $2,000.

After researching how to start a nonprofit organization, Lakey realized it wasn’t as easy as he thought, so he decided to launch a website that organized fundraising events and activities to benefit the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children and other charities designated to help children.

Liza will join her sister, Ella, 7, at Southside Elementary in August and says she looks forward to learning new things.

Liza loves making new friends. She also loves to entertain and belts out movie soundtracks, such as Disney films “Mulan” and “Frozen.”

“I’ve seen it a kazillion times,” she says before singing a sampling of the movie’s lead number, “Let It Go.” Liza also helps her mom, Mary, around the house and, in the mornings, helps get her little sister, Cici, ready.

Ask any Pine View School for the Gifted student what he or she thinks of Principal Dr. Stephen Covert, and most likely you’ll hear praises.

Covert, a Virginia native, has made a great first impression on his new family at Pine View.

Covert assumed the role of principal at the Osprey-based school last August. He left his job as assistant superintendent in Spotsylvania County, Va., to move here.

This summer, Covert reflected on the past school year.

Humbled by his students’ kind words, Covert says the role came naturally to him.

Growing up with his father, who served as a principal at a high school in Virginia, Covert is familiar with the position.

In fact, at one point in his academic career, Covert and his father served as principals simultaneously at two schools in Spotsylvania County.

“The question I got asked the most was, ‘What are you going to do to change Pine View?’” he says. “I don’t want to change something that’s already great; I want to build on the great things already here.”

Covert says helping the school is not a one-man job but a community effort.

Before this year’s graduation, Covert watched the last five years’ ceremonies and met with each senior, something that is helping him better understand the school’s needs.

“I’m going to need to work with smarter minds than my own,” says Covert, praising his fellow staff members, students and teachers.

Covert, a father of two, is looking forward to his second year at Pine View.

“If you have a great year, the next year can be even better,” he says.

I have been a part of the Lakeview family even before I was a student here.

The staff at Lakeview is welcoming and kind, just like a big family! They all work hard so that every day can be a better place for students to learn.

One of the most memorable times I had at Lakeview was when we got our Microsoft tablets. We got to take pictures around campus, made PowerPoint presentations and worked on Office 365 projects together — even when we weren’t in the same room!

As fun as the tablets were, another amazing opportunity we had was to go to Oak Park and work with the children there. We got to teach the children things that were new to them, as well as have them keep practicing new skills.

One thing I will never forget is the Lakeview carnival. All the teachers came after school to help with their class booths. My teachers, Ms. Usman and Mr. Feaster, were at their booth in the bike cage where kids threw wet sponges at them!

One of my favorite classes I had this year was art. For one particular project, my partner and I got to work on a project for Embracing Our Differences. We made a clay 3-D vase with puzzle pieces and flags from different countries.

Of all the years I have been in elementary school, this year has by far been the most memorable and fun.

Dominique Golder, age 13 BOOKER MIDDLE SCHOOL Beaming with excitement, Dominque Golder talks about her love of writing.

“I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember,” says the 5-foot, 11-inch 13-year-old.

Golder, who is going in to the eighth grade at Booker Middle School and says she feels “fantastic” about the upcoming year, is a published poet and recognized fiction writer.

“I’m just excited about life,” she says. With a signed contract at Next Models in Miami and the 2012 Presidential Academic Achievement Award, Golder has every reason to be.

Golder first started writing in elementary school. She remembers writing page after page on her family’s old desktop computer. When she was in fifth grade, a haiku she

handed in to her teacher titled “Sunflowers Bloom” became published in 2011. Although she can’t remember the haiku, she will never forget how seeing her work published made her feel.

For Golder, summer vacation means more time to write.

She says once she starts, she can’t stop. The most number of pages she has written in a day is 12, and the story “made my friends cry while reading.”

“My mom comes in to my room every night and asks me to go to bed,” she says, laughing. “I’m like, ‘It’s only 4 a.m.!’”

Golder also writes fan stories based on popular series, draws fictional characters and acts in films Ringling College of Art and Design students produce.

In June, Golder received the Category 3 grand prize in the international poetry contest, River of Words. She, her family, and her creative writing teacher, Joanna Fox, whom the con-

test named Teacher of the Year, flew to San Francisco to receive their awards.

“It was amazing,” she says.

Writing comes naturally to Golder, and the future model knows she’ll be writing no matter where her travels take her.

“I don’t even consider writing work, I consider it a hobby,” she says.

The students had the opportunity to see the garden grow from the installation of the grow boxes to getting dirty and moving soil to get the garden started.

During the upcoming school year, we will expand our technology resources. This year, all fourth- and fifth-graders will use Microsoft Surface tablets every day as part of their instruction. THE RETIREE Tom Buchanan, TUTTLE ELEMENTARY Leaving Tuttle Elementary School won’t be easy for former Principal Tom Buchanan.

“I’ll miss the people most,” says Buchanan, who served as Tuttle’s principal for a decade.

“It’s a community.”

Under Buchanan’s leadership, Tuttle reached new heights, earning the Adequate Yearly Progress award in 2006.

The school has received the award every year since.

Buchanan’s efforts to bring the school community together led him to earn the title of the School District’s Principal of the Year in 2008-09.

“That was a career highlight,” he says. “The fact that the district and my peers would consider me the best principal was a real thrill.”

Although some may remember Buchanan for his career

achievements, others may remember him best for his dedication to encouraging student involvement.

When the school was raising money for United Way’s “Got Change Save Lives” campaign in the 2006-07 school year, Buchanan agreed to be one of three teachers eligible to be slimed if children put the most change in his jar.

“It was a way to motivate them to donate,” he says. “Students are going to want to see their principal slimed.”

The sliming was a success.

“I just always wanted to make a difference with children and give them better futures,” says Buchanan who credits his love of the Tuttle community to its family-oriented feel. “We are one big family. It was very hard to leave,” Buchanan said.

THE VOLUNTEER Like most parents with two of her children enrolled at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, Mary Khoshi finds herself in and out of the school daily.

However, Khoshi can be found volunteering in the classrooms more often than most. As a parent, Khoshi spends about half of her week helping her children’s teachers with projects, lessons and field trips.

She says the encouragement from other parents, teachers and students keeps her coming back.

“They don’t just want you there; they need you there,” she says. “I have fun every time I go.”

Khoshi first became involved with the school in the fall when she volunteered to help at the school’s annual fall festival.

What was supposed to be a few hours of helping with games and the buffet area turned into a day of working with enthusi-

astic parents and teachers.

“They welcome you,” Khoshi says of her peers. “It doesn’t matter if you’re not part of the Parent Teacher Organization.

They say, ‘Please come as many times as you’d like.’”

The most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing her children and the other students have fun learning, she says.

In her daughter Atussa’s kindergarten class this year, Khoshi earned the name “sight-word lady” because every week she helped the students learn a list of 10 vocabulary words.

She says seeing the children in both her daughters’ classes greet her with smiles is what makes her happiest.

“You open the door, and they’re so happy to see you,” she says. “They let you be a part of the class. You’re in the class with them; you’re one of them.

You’re not someone’s mom. You just belong in that group.”

Khoshi knows that as her girls grow up, they will want their independence. She says volunteering allows her to stay close to them and see them grow both inside and outside of the classroom.

“I like to see where they learn their manners, who their friends are and how they

learn,” she says.

Khoshi plans to continue volunteering for as long as possible — without embarrassing her growing girls.

“Soon enough, (my daughters) are going to say, ‘Mom, drop me off on the corner!’” she says, laughing. “So, as long as they want me there, I’ll be there.”

As a fencer, Jordan Argyris often finds himself thinking one step ahead.

“People call fencing ‘physical chess.’ It’s really a mind game,” says Argyris, an incoming senior at Sarasota Military Academy.

“The smarter ones are always going to win — the tactical ones.”

Argyris began fencing when he was 11 years old after seeing James Bond sword fight in “Die Another Day.” After taking a break from fencing at 13 and moving in 2010 to Sarasota, Argyris decided to practice at the Sarasota Fencing Academy, where he continues to practice three times a week.

“I think it’s really a test of how long you can stay focused while moving as fast as you can,” he says of the sport.
