The New Year still may be four months away, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start resolving to lead a healthier lifestyle.

More than 50 health care and wellness providers will offer the tools and information necessary to improve health and fitness at the sixth annual Embrace a Life of Health and Wellness Expo Oct. 1, at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, 8330 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. The expo, sponsored by the Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Corp., is free and open to the public.

“This is more of an event for the entire community,” Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Director Lori Basilone said.

As in years past, the event will feature a kids’ zone, where parents can pick up healthy recipes, tips for quick and easy school lunches, flu shot information, and more. The Out-of-Door Academy, Kiddie Academy, Verizon and youth fitness trainer Heather Hackett all will offer booths and demonstrations specifically for children.

In addition to the kids’ zone, Lifestyle Family Fitness will be offering personal training assessments and fitness demonstrations. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office also will have a prescription drug drop-off, where residents can drop off unused pills.

Children have specific dental needs that vary greatly from that of an adult patient. Some children have a level of anxiety that prevents good coping skills. They may be particularly fearful of dental treatment due to previous experiences; oral aversion; hyper-sensitivity to sensory, visual and auditory input; fear of pain and fear of the unknown. In Glorious 3D Lakewood Ranch Medical Center’s Breast Health Center received its new Breast Tomosynthesis 3D system June 13.

By Jen Blanco | Associate Editor After months of anticipation, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center finally was ready to welcome its new bundle of joy.

The Breast Tomosynthesis 3D system arrived June 13, at the Breast Health Center, making Lakewood Ranch one of the first health care providers in the country to offer the Selenia Dimensions 3D Digital Mammography System from Hologic for breast cancer screening.

“It was like birthing a baby,” Chief Operating Officer Linda Widra said. “We had been waiting for such a long time.”

The new system provides a 3D digital image, which enables radiologists to click down through the layers of breast tissue one layer at a time and differentiate between overlapping breast tissue and masses. With the system, patients often do not have to undergo two mammograms — a process that had become somewhat routine with the 2D imaging technology. Furthermore, radiologists are equipped with the necessary tools to detect breast cancer earlier.

“This benefits our patients by reducing the amount of call backs for overlapping tissue that may look like a mass on regular digital images,” Breast Health Supervisor Tracy Legutko said. “Radiologists are seeing areas of concern that they weren’t able to see on the regular digital images. It had been a huge benefit to the patients in their care and also their diagnosis.”

Legutko said many of her patients had been asking about the 3D technology even before Lakewood Ranch installed its system.

Coastal Orthopedics surgeon Dr. William Tontz is on a mission to change the way doctors do medicine, and he’s starting it in the East County.

Tontz, a fellow in spinal surgery, is leading the charge as Lakewood Ranch Medical Center creates an on-campus spine and joint center.

Leaders say the center, which will be a designated space in the medical building attached to the main hospital, will fill a much-needed role at the Lakewood Ranch facility.

“It was a glaring gap that we had at the hospital,” Lakewood Ranch Medical Center CEO Jim Wilson said.

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center opened its orthopedic floor, which provides services for sports medicine, advanced pain techniques, vertos mild procedures and joint replacements, among other treatments, about two years ago. And although the center always has offered some level of spine surgery and care, it did not have the specialty as a focus.

Coastal Orthopedics is developing the new center to add new techniques, redefine the surgical process and hospital infrastructure, and improve overall patient satisfaction. It hopes to establish Lakewood Ranch Medical Center as top choice for spinal and joint medical care.

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center also has engaged the services of Marshall Steele, a physician-led health care services firm that helps providers create patient-centric destination care centers. The company will help Lakewood Ranch Medical Center develop its program and procedures over the next five months, as well as to market the program. It also will help the hospital record and publish longterm patient outcomes for public review.

“It’s helping us build the infrastructure to ensure scientifically-based outcomes,” Wilson said. “We are so excited to be working on a project of this caliber. This further demonstrates our commitment to bring advanced technology and quality care close to home.”

Tontz was in private practice for five years in San Diego, Calif., before moving to Chicago, because of a family tragedy.

Dr. John Fezza

The Center for Sight doctor has been performing cosmetic facial and laser surgery in the area for the past 14 years.

Dr. John Fezza learned an important lesson at a young age: It’s hard to be great at everything.

Fezza took his father’s message to heart and carried it with him as he began training for a career in oculofacial plastic surgery.

Fezza joined the Center for Sight team 14 years ago, and since then, he has performed facelifts, eye tucks, aesthetic and cosmetic surgery, jaw restoration, neck tightening and Botox injections, among other procedures — all with the goal of improving his patients’ sense of well-being and outlook on life.

Do you ever feel like your brain has gone fuzzy after eating? Dietician Pam Mathis shares about the foods that energize your brain — and which ones hinder it.

By Pam Eubanks | News Editor You may have heard your brain is a muscle that needs exercising, but did you also know certain foods can negatively affect memory and other brain functions?

Pam Mathis, a Lakewood Ranchbased registered dietician and licensed wellness coach, said being aware of what you eat is important for avoiding cases of “brain fog.”

“Your brain cells are Mathis functioning because of glucose that is created from the food that you eat,” Mathis said.

“When you think about a healthy diet, we want to maintain a healthy level of fat content in the diet because that helps the brain function.”

Certain fats have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce heart disease

and other conditions, so making sure you select the right fats is important, Mathis said.

While Omega 3 fatty acids — polyunsaturated or mono-unsaturated fats — have anti-inflammatory properties and are healthy for brain cells, unhealthy saturated and trans-fats actually cause injury to the insides of the artery, leading to the hardening of those arteries and the cognitive problems that follow.

“That’s what allows cholesterol to build up on the inside of the arteries and (cause) clots,” Mathis said. “It raises the risk of stroke and heart attack.”

Furthermore, balancing the amount of sugars you consume also can help improve brain function. Consuming too much sugar can result in bloodsugar swings that negatively affect concentration and memory, Mathis said.

2. Wild salmon. Wild salmon tops Mathis’ list because of its Omega 3 fatty acid content. Its nutritional properties help prevent dementia, improve concentration and also act as a natural anti-inflammatory for conditions such as arthritis.

“Farm-raised salmon just doesn’t have the Omega 3 content,” Mathis said. “It has high levels of colorings and other additives and lower nutritional value.”

3. Flax seeds. Flax seeds are a great source of a compound called ALA, which is important for brain function, Mathis said.

“You can buy them whole and grind them yourself,” Mathis said.

4. Walnuts — Walnuts are high in healthy fats, which are part of the outer layer of a healthy brain cell and also are high in vitamins B6 and E. “That’s what makes all these (specific high-fat) foods healthy,” Mathis said.

5. Eggs — Normally, Mathis wouldn’t recommend eggs because of their cholesterol level and other properties, but eggs do have some unique benefits that help improve brain power.

Eggs are rich in a nutrient called choline, which is linked to cognitive function.

Choline is, in fact, found in the yolk of the egg, not the white.
