For this year’s “Spirit of America” special section, The Observer’s staff photographer, Rachel S. O’Hara, sought out local places and people in the Sarasota, Longboat Key and East County areas to capture what American life is like — the spirit of America.

Our cover features upclose looks at a few of the photos in our section. They include hands-on activities such as working on a community garden, a mother and daughter making chocolate-chip cookies together, a longtime potter crafting a bowl on a potter’s wheel, eating an ice cream cone and playing baseball; as well as Americans’ favorite way to start their mornings, a typical American meal and America’s national symbol, a flag, painted on the side of a building.

We hope these photos resonate with you and not only show you images of local life but spark ideas in your mind of what the “spirit of America” means to you.
