The ranch’s roots

This is the old Lorraine Road bridge, circa 1988. Today, both SMR’s and SMR Farms’ headquarters are located off Lorraine Road.

Initial plans for Lakewood Ranch began more than a decade before any construction took place.

Polo has been a part of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch even before the first home was built.

The Sarasota Polo Club opened in 1991.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch’s has its roots in Wisconsin. John Schroeder, of Milwaukee, assembled the land that would become Schroeder-Manatee Ranch in 1905.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch broke ground for Lakewood Ranch on Feb. 23, 1994. One year later, Summerfield opened and its first residents moved into their homes.

Juniors Thomas Lanier and Rachel Nickens were crowned 11th Grade Upcoming Prince and Princess at Lakewood Ranch High School in 1999. Because the school had no graduates at the time, “Homecoming” was renamed “Upcoming” that year. Published November 1999.

2001-2005 Work on Cornerstone Church of Lakewood Ranch progressed in 2001. Published March 2001.

Phil Prive was one of dozens of East County residents who visited the Stanley Cup when it made its first Lakewood Ranch appearance in November 2003.

Lakewood Ranch residents flocked to the community’s Greenbrook Adventure Park when it opened in June 2002.

Danielle White captivated the East County as she competed on the Fox TV show “American Juniors.” White was one of five singers to win a spot in the group. Published August 2003.

Hurricane Frances toppled trees and forced many residents into shelters as it ripped through Lakewood Ranch in September 2004.

2006-2010 Lakewood Ranch resident Ken Quinn earned a hero’s welcome on Main Street April 21, 2009. Quinn was on the Maersk Alabama when Somali pirates seized the U.S. cargo ship April 8.

In 2008, economist Hank Fishkind began his feasibility study to determine whether the incorporation of Lakewood Ranch makes sense financially.

We are excited about the next 15 years and what we can achieve by working together with the community!

Christopher North, a 2003 Lakewood Ranch High School graduate, was killed in action in Baghdad April 21, 2007. He was returned to his parents April 27 via plane. A memorial service honored North April 29.

Children born at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center returned to the hospital for a group photo at its five-year anniversary celebration Sept. 12, 2009.
