> Blake names ITS 2010 Doctor of the Year Blake Medical Center announced last week that Dr. Alessandro Golino has been named 2010 Doctor of the Year. Golino has been a member of the Blake medical staff since 1999.

Golino, a native of Italy, received his M.D. from the University of Naples and graduated in the top 1% of his class. He completed his cardiothoracic residency in 1991, with honors. As part of his formal training, he was a member of the surgical and transplant team at the Texas Heart Institute. While there, in collaboration with the institute, he implanted the first left ventricular assist device in 1992 in Europe.

Since 2002, Golino has been practicing with partner Dr. Richard Peterson at Manatee Cardiac Surgery, in Bradenton.

Goldman offers personalized ways for ‘living thin and young’ Sylvia Goldman’s dieting story sounds familiar. She tried dozens of diets and visited the best spas in the country, but her weight still fluctuated.

“Diets are for dummies,” Goldman said. “The only way to keep off the weight was to find something compatible with my tastes and lifestyle.”

Fed up, Goldman contacted cognitive psychologist Dr. Albert Ellis and Dr. Norma Campbell, co-author of the “Behavioral Guide to Therapy,” and designed her own program. She published “Living Thin (An Attitude — Not a Diet), Living Young (An Attitude — Not an Age)” in 2000.

Balance class helps prevent falls for seniors If safety is Tom Harlow’s first priority when he teaches balancemovement classes at the Senior Friendship Center, in Sarasota, then having fun is certainly a close second. From cracking jokes to quacking like a duck during the “duck waddle” exercise, Harlow keeps his participants smiling as he improves their balance, strength and flexibility.

“I want people to come because they want to,” says Harlow. “My main goal is to relay important information to them, but I want to make it fun, too.”

Harlow is a falls-prevention specialist and certified personal trainer, who has taught balancemovement classes at the Senior Friendship Center for four years.

The class is part of the center’s three-tiered approach to its Falls Prevention Program, which emphasizes exercise, education and safety.

Although Harlow’s classes are often filled with laughter, the dangers of fall-related injuries are serious.

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for seniors over the age of 65. In 2006, there were 1,402 fall-related deaths among Florida seniors.

“Lack of exercise, not paying attention, moving too fast and not picking up the feet are all

reasons why people fall,” says Harlow. “Even something as simple as being dehydrated can affect your balance.”

And those risks become even greater with age.

“We start to lose mobility as we get older, both mentally and

physically,” says Harlow. “Any exercises that you can do or anything that keeps your body in tune is going to help prevent falls.”

In the 45-minute Balance Movement Class, Harlow leads participants through a series of stretching, core strengthening and balance exercises. They also practice “conscious walking,” which teaches awareness of the placement of your feet on the floor and how to pick them up as you walk.

“We have a tendency just to move without thinking,” says Harlow. “People often fall in their homes because they have such a high comfort level there that they don’t think twice about what they’re doing.”

The Senior Friendship Center also offers a class called Balance Movement Plus, which is a slower-paced class designed for those with canes or walkers.

Dr. Glenn Adams Medical director of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Disorder Centers Most people would be shocked to discover that they stop breathing for up to 10 seconds at least 30 times a night, but 5% to 10% of the population suffers from sleep apnea — and 80% of them have no idea.

“A lot of people who suffer from sleep apnea think it’s normal to feel tired throughout the day,” says Dr. Glenn Adams, medical director of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Disorder Centers.

There are 88 different sleep disorders, but 70% to 80% of the patients that Adams sees have obstructive sleep apnea.

“Anything that obstructs the airway, from large vocal chords to an oversized neck, can lead to obstructive sleep apnea,” says Adams.

Untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and even sudden death.

The primary form of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea for the past 25 years has been the continuous positive airway pressure machine, known as CPAP. The CPAP is an air-pump device that continuously blows oxygen into a hose connected to a sleeper’s face by a nasal mask.

Adams recently became one of three providers in the state to offer a more comfortable method of treatment for sleep apnea,

called Provent.

Provent, which is the first new treatment for sleep apnea developed in more than 20 years, is a small microvalve device resembling two tiny Band-Aids that attach over the nostrils. Provent redirects air through small holes in the device, eliminating the need for an air pump.

Wellness consultants offer guidance to healthy living Health can be measured by more than one element, such as a person’s weight or medications one is taking, and local wellness consultants are using a variety of tools to promote healthy living for their patients.

Jessica Hart Patella, a wellness consultant at Sarasota Natural Health, practices homeopathic intake, a vibrational medicine that works on a physical, mental and emotional level and promotes a spectrum of healing.

“We talk about their lifestyle and what to do to reduce stress, depression and anxiety,” Patella said. “We can change the diet and add supplements to aid in health.

Other times, we add yoga or meditation.”

Each client fills out a homeopathic intake form, a questionnaire that determines which homeopathic remedy is best suited for them.

“The foods you like, the position you like to sleep in — everything goes into helping me pick a homeopathic remedy,” Patella said. “I try to understand what it’s like to be in your shoes. If you have headaches, I try to figure out what it feels like. Is it moving or throbbing? What makes it better or worse? Ten people can come in with the exact same issue and they are all going to leave with something different.”

Patella treats people from ages 5 to 82. She sees younger children for acute colds, coughs and flu, and helps adults with everything from preventing cancer to chronic diseases.

“My job is to give them the tools so that they can be on the path of healing to reach optimal health,” she said. “I help them heal along the way, and the process is always changing. There’s always something more they can do.”

“If you breathe primarily out of your left nostril, it brings in a more calming energy,” Patella said. “We ended with ‘sa re sa sa’ — mantra meditation. When you focus on the mantra and singing, your mind isn’t going as rapidly, but if you try to be quiet, your mind gets in the way.”

Caryn Patterson, a wellness consultant and ACE-certified personal trainer, has spent the past two years helping her clients make lifestyle changes. As part of her wellness classes, Patterson makes dining during the week easier, especially for clients with children, by offering them a healthy five-night meal plan that eliminates racing to the grocery store or picking up take-out at the last minute. By shopping, planning and prepping foods ahead of time, clients can focus on eating organically from their own kitchen.

Food journaling also plays a big part in eating healthier. Patterson asks clients to jot down their food intake after each meal and snack, and then explain how they feel both emotionally and physically. Food journaling can also help determine patterns of fatigue, headaches and other symptoms.

For example, when people notice that sugary desserts trigger an unpleasant feeling, they can try alternative foods to which their body may respond differently.

“After I had my son, I started writing in my food journals,” Patterson said. “I had five pounds to lose and couldn’t lose it — I started really paying attention (to what I was eating). I don’t count calories and don’t believe in diets — I believe in lifestyle changes.”
