True teas provide health benefits in each cup According to tea aficionados, there’s no such thing as too much tea. And, just like ice cream, there’s a flavor for everyone.

Tea is nearly 5,000 years old and was first discovered in 2737 B.C. Much of the world’s tea is grown in mountainous regions and contains no sodium, fat, carbonation or sugar. Black, oolong, green and white tea are all “true teas” and come from a warm-weather plant called camellia sinensis.

This tea-producing bush has thick green leaves and white blossoms. Variables in harvesting and processing determine the type and quality of the tea, and the amount of processing and oxidation determines whether the tea becomes a black, oolong, green or white variety.

Tisanes, or herbal teas — an infusion of flowers, roots, bark and seeds — do not come from camellia sinensis, but are called teas because they are prepared the same way: by immersing the tea in hot water and extracting the flavor.

Chamomile and mint are examples of tisanes and contain similar health benefits to true teas.

Research conducted by the Tea Association of the U.S.A. Inc. suggests that drinking three to five cups of tea per day can offer significant heart-health benefits that range from reducing heart attack

Origin: China and Japan Properties: Slightly unoxidized to retain a delicate grassy flavor.

Preparation: Steep for two to three minutes in water just under boiling.

Benefits: Used by monks because it gives a restful alertness, but also aids in relaxation. Reduces blood pressure and builds bone density. It contains about 35 to 45 milligrams of caffeine per cup.

Nutrition aids in disease prevention and recovery Local health experts advocate eating a plant-based diet and nutrient-rich foods, including vegetables, fruits and whole grains, to obtain maximum health benefits.

Seeing nutrition facts featured in the news is nothing new. Everyone knows eating a diet of varied fruits and vegetables, whole grains and limiting such items as alcohol and sugar is a healthy way of living. But local health experts are seeing a shift in the way that information is presented. Now, nutrition is being featured as a way to prevent diseases, as well as aid in recovery from such hard-hitting immune system diseases such as cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, one-third of the 562,340 expected cancer deaths in 2009 will have been related to obesity, physical inactivity or poor nutrition and could have been prevented.

“There has always been a lot of nutrition items in the news, but now there’s so much evidence of preventing disease by using nutrition, we know it’s not just something you do after you get a disease,” said Pam Mathis, RD, LD, CWC, a registered dietician and wellness coach who has served as the nutrition consultant for The Wellness Community since 1998.

Through her practice as a dietician and wellness coach, Mathis works with patients seeking to prevent diseases but also recover from treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Mathis tailors each dietary plan to her patient’s needs, including combating any side effects from treatment such as nausea or poor appetite. She said the main focus is boosting back up the immune system and gaining energy, which includes a light exercise program such as yoga or Tai Chi. Julie Bender, a registered and licensed dietician with Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s outpatient nutrition-counseling program, said some of the research findings are inconsistent, which can be confusing for the public. For instance, one day the focus is on “superfoods,” the next day it’s anti-inflammatory foods. But her solution is for people to follow a simple principle: Eat a plant-based diet, focusing on more fruits, vegetables, whole

grains and lean protein, and eat fewer processed foods, including sugar and alcohol.

“Some people wonder, ‘How do I do that?’” Bender said. “One way is at meal time, fill at least two-thirds of your plate with fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The rest should be protein sources such as lean beef, pork, turkey, chicken, fish and eggs.”

Bender said some people may associate a plant-based diet with small portions, but in order to get a diet rich in a variety of minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals, she recommends eating two to four cups of vegetables a day, along with two to three pieces of fruit.

Evelisse Capo has seen the benefits of a plant-based diet firsthand. Capo, a PharmD, is a nutrition-and-health educator who teaches Food for Life Nutrition and Cooking classes for The Cancer Project. The classes, designed by doctors, nutritionists and registered dieticians, were launched in 2001 in Washington, D.C., as a way for cancer survivors and their friends and families to learn how nutrients can aid in

Capo began teaching classes in 2006 in Cape Coral and started teaching classes in Sarasota this summer; she and her husband, Sigfrido, moved here one-and-ahalf years ago. Since she started teaching, Capo said she has had students who have changed their lives — and the way they eat — overnight.

“I had one couple in Cape Coral and the husband had stage IV prostate cancer,” Capo said. “After the first class, they came back and said they had cleaned out their pantry. They were so happy when his labs came back wonderful.”

The Cancer Project advocates eating a low-fat, plant-based diet that is also meatfree and dairy-free. Capo said some people wonder where their sources of dairy and protein will come from, but she points to protein-rich and dairy-rich foods such as beans, quinoa, tofu, kale and broccoli.

“Give it a try and do it 100% for at least a month and see the change in your tastebuds,” she says.

And Capo said she would never advocate a vegan lifestyle without practicing it

Community resources provide care for caregivers Linda Albert was a one-woman show.

When her husband, Jim, retired abruptly in 1996 after having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease six years earlier, Albert gradually became his primary caregiver. She took over most driving duties and used the new role to learn more about finances. In the early years, the illness brought the couple closer. She referred to Parkinson’s as “our” disease.

Then Jim’s health declined in the summer of 2008 after he had four surgeries in an eight-month span. His medications increased so that he needed pills nine times a day. For a while, he couldn’t get in and out of his wheelchair by himself.

He needed help bathing and getting dressed.

“I started to feel so exhausted and so tired of my life,” Albert said. “I was so angry.”

Albert, a writer and life-and-communications coach, cried when she realized that she couldn’t continue her caregiving responsibilities alone.

“To feel like I couldn’t run our lives, it was a terrible feeling,” she said.

Albert found a home-health aide who comes to the home almost every morning and stays overnight on occasion. She also joined a journaling group that meets

Marilyn Tait, neuroscience nurse educator at Sarasota Memorial Hospital who runs the hospital’s Caregiver Connection group, said that caregivers often get in the habit of neglecting their own needs.

Tait knows about caregiving from a personal perspective as well as a professional one. Her husband died of a brain tumor 20 years ago, and for five years, she was his caregiver before she placed him in a facility for his safety.

“It’s the most difficult job in the world,” Tait said. “You are putting someone’s needs in front of your own.”

Tait suggests that caregivers ask for help when they need it, whether it’s seeking a home-health aide or asking a trusted friend to help out for a few hours.

She also said that caregivers should focus on their own needs. Tait often sees caregivers who become sicker than the loved one they care for because they neglect themselves.

“My theory is that caregivers need to make themselves their No. 1 priority,” she said.

Kathleen Houseweart, program coordinator of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Memory Disorder Clinic, which provides caregiver support services, says that caregivers are often unaware of the resources available in the community.

“One of the things we have in Sarasota is an excellent network of providers,”

The Caregiver Resource Center at the Senior Friendship Center in Sarasota links caregivers to services. There are support groups, home health-care services and transportation services throughout the area. Plus, Sarasota County has three adult-daycare services at the Senior Friendship Centers’ Sarasota and Venice campuses and at SarahCare Adult Day Care Centers.

Houseweart said that daycare services are underutilized in the Sarasota area and cost approximately $9 a day, compared to the $15 to $25 that hiring a home-health aide could cost. She said subsidies are often available.

According to Houseweart, people should plan for the fact that they are likely to, at some point, be a caregiver and/or need a caregiver. She cites an AARP report, which found that 29% of American adults are caregivers. Given the aging population, that number will likely increase.

“The best time to be making those plans is not when you’re in the emergency room,” Houseweart said.
