MUFAs and PUFAs sound more like two characters you would find on a children’s TV show instead of two key elements in the health arena, but both of these provide essential, “good” fats needed in a healthy diet.

MUFA stands for monounsaturated fatty acid. MUFAs, also called oleic acid, are a good source of omega-9s and have been found to lower LDL cholesterol but not levels of HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol. They also help protect against certain cancer risks, such as breast cancer, and people who often consume MUFAs have a lower body-fat level.

Good sources of MUFAs include: olives, olive oil, nuts, avocados, peanut butter and dark chocolate.

PUFA stands for polyunsaturated fatty acid.

PUFAs can be foods containing either omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3s have been shown to improve cardiovascular health, improve arthritis and are necessary in brain-and-eye development, while omega-6s can help reduce inflammation in the body, regulate blood pressure and help improve the immune system’s response.

Good sources of PUFAs include: salmon, herring, soybeans, broccoli and walnuts (omega-3s) and kale, spinach, nuts and flaxseeds (omega-6s).

Doctors say the biggest concern when eating PUFAs is to make sure you are eating omega-6s and omega3s at a ratio of about 4-to-1. A typical American diet will provide about 14 to 25 times more omega-6s than omega-3s, which could lead to inflammatory disorders such as heart disease, cancer, asthma and arthritis.

As the 82-year-old swings his arms forward in time to the rhythm of up-tempo beats, he’s not thinking about anything except moving with the music.

“When you get older, you’ve got a choice,” Wilber says. “You can sit down, watch television and die, or you can keep moving.”

Wilber’s movements mirror those of Denise Medved, who moves fluidly before him and a group of 30 women at the Sara Dance Center. With hair cropped into a pixie cut, she performs spirited, soulful arts techniques called Nia. Medved, one of only 13 international Nia instructors, is training the group to be white belts. A world traveler who just returned from South Africa, she avidly spreads the joy of this popular technique, which Kelly Atkins first introduced to Sarasota in 2000.

“It’s for the adventuresome — someone looking for new, unique and different,” said Atkins, who instructs classes six days a week at the Sara Dance Center. “It’s kind of a ‘Nia buzz.’ You feel a connectedness to the body as a whole.”

Atkins started teaching fitness classes in 1987, but while studying physical therapy in college, she became more interested in helping people stay healthy, instead of waiting until they got injured. She is now a nine-year, black-belt Nia teacher.

“Nia is great for people in their 30s and 40s and a great way to get your heart rate up without feeling the jarring effect that traditional fitness (training) brings,” Atkins said.

but uses body weight instead of traditional weights. Nia provides the benefits of a cardiovascular workout that blends martial arts, such as Tai Chi, Aikido and Tae Kwon Do; modern, jazz and Duncan dance arts; and healing arts such as yoga, Feldenkrais and Alexander techniques.

“It feels more natural moving how your body is designed to move,” Atkins said.

The classes also help to build a strong community connection, and, with that, comes a powerful emotional release.

“Due to a central-nervous system virus that gave me lots of pain and burning, I hadn’t left my house in a couple years,” class member Donna Gauntlett said.

Not necessarily, say local health professionals, who stress that you don’t have to put off your healthand-fitness goals until New Year’s Day. By taking small steps now, you’ll have a happier, healthier holiday season and new year.

who gain that pound or two during the holiday season never lose that weight. Over the years, those holiday indulgences add up on the scale.

According to Steve Schewe, owner of Steve’s Fitness, who has been a certified personal trainer since 1975, holiday weight gain isn’t inevitable. If you eat and drink in moderation, you can avoid loading up on calories.

Schewe, who trains people in their homes, recommends starting holiday meals with healthy fats, such as those found in olive oil and avocados, because they can help fill you up at mealtimes. He also suggests filling up on selections from the fruit-and-vegetable platter to avoid eating high-calorie foods. Nuts are a good choice, because they decrease the risk of heart disease, while possibly improving memory, balance and coordination. And, if you find yourself staring at a cookie tray,

consider a cinnamon cookie: Cinnamon can help reduce blood sugar.

According to Schewe, people shouldn’t deny themselves the foods they crave. Instead, limit yourself to small servings of fattening foods and drinks.

“We all have to be human,” Schewe said. “If you know something has high fat, have a bite, chew slowly and just enjoy it.”

But Schewe says your focus should be on friends and family — not fattening foods.

“Let’s not just get excited about the high-fat goodies,” he said.

“Enjoy the warmth of the season.”

Elizabeth Cupo, licensed mentalhealth counselor and founder of Key Counseling on Longboat Key, said that taking a walk in the sunshine isn’t just beneficial for the waistline.

“Research shows that a brisk walk can help fight depression, particularly mild depression,” Cupo said.

Although you know you won’t be snowed in if you’re staying put this season, one source of added stress for local residents is that the warm weather often makes their homes a destination spot for families. Playing host often adds to holiday stress.

Regardless of your circumstance this season, Cupo recommends reducing stress by focusing on what the holidays mean to you.

“Choose the things that are most important,” she said. “If you like baking cookies but you don’t like putting up lights, don’t feel bad if you don’t put up lights.”

Cupo said that the holidays often bring stress because they fall at the end of the calendar year. People reflect on what has

occurred over the past year and often focus on the negatives: death, illness, divorce or a layoff.

Cupo recommends that people also think about the positive events of the past year. Also, if a death or divorce has occurred, it’s important to avoid isolation.

Eating and drinking in moderation are important to your holiday mindset. Because alcohol is a depressant, drinking too much can exacerbate depression. Plus, many people find themselves in stressful situations because they behaved inappropriately at a holiday party after drinking too much.

“You need to decide ahead of time how many drinks you’re going to have,” Cupo said.

Sometimes, holiday stress doesn’t end Jan. 2. Many people find themselves still facing creditcard bills and extra pounds, along with unrealistic New Year’s resolutions after the holidays.

The bottom line: Take baby steps.

If you want to quit smoking, don’t give up on your New Year’s resolution if you slip up. Instead, take smaller steps, such as talking to your doctor about smoking cessation.

“Be realistic,” Cupo said. “If you’re expecting the moon, you’re going to be disappointed.”

Schewe stresses the importance of having a physical evaluation by a fitness professional before beginning an exercise program.

Sneak in extra walking when you can, even if you’re just parking your car farther away from the entrance to the mall or grocery store. Use the stairs whenever possible to burn extra calories. If you’ve overindulged at a holiday party, try to take a walk.

Plus, you can sneak in short five-minute workouts at home, substituting household items, such as cans of beans or bottles of water, for weights.

Three years ago, the six-year-old Shih Tzu-Chihuahua mix became a certified therapy pet after completing a fourhour training program, along with an orientation and evaluation. Since then, Mason has become a well-known figure at TideWell. In the 2009 calendar, which featured therapy pets, he was Mr. January.

The Observer caught up with this dogged volunteer on a recent Wednesday afternoon to sniff out a minute-by-minute account of the benefits of pet therapy.

4:15 p.m. — Mason visits TideWell resident Walter Rebello, who smiles while Mason sniffs him. Rebello says that when he was a boy, he had a dog, one that was medium-sized and had hair that was shorter than Mason’s.

Animals trigger memories, many dating back to childhood, which can be a benefit of pet therapy, according to TideWell spokeswoman Carlene Cobb. Other benefits can include reduced blood pressure, because of the animal’s calming presence.

The pet’s presence can increase endorphins and create distractions from pain.

“They can change the mood in a room,” Cobb says.

4:18 p.m. — Mason has snuggled up comfortably in Rebello’s lap. Tyeann Dillon tells Rebello how comfortable Mason looks in his lap. As Rebello scratches Mason’s head, registered nurse Nancy Heffner says that therapy pets aren’t just good for the residents — they’re good for the staff as well.

Dillon mentions that they can also be beneficial to family members. She remembers a woman named Rose whom she and Mason used to visit at home. Rose’s son, Michael, was taking care of her.

Mason spent half of his time with Michael during the visits. A health-care worker told Dillon, “Michael needs that attention just as much as Rose does.”

4:22 p.m. — A volunteer poodle named Annie walks by the room. But not all therapy pets are dogs. TideWell has more than 65 therapy pets in the four counties — Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto — that it serves. The roster includes two cats and a cockatiel.

Stender’s daughter, McClaren Davies, says that her mother always brightens up when pet-therapy animals visit. According to Cobb, just being able to touch the animal has benefits for patients.

“With the elderly, at the end of life, they’re often starved for touch,” she says.

4:47 p.m. — Stender begins to wake up.

She pets Mason for a minute or two.

Davies tells her that waking up was worthwhile, because she got to meet Mason.

“That’s right,” Stender whispers with a smile.

5 p.m. — Mason is getting ready to head home. He has been working since 8:30 a.m., having helped Dillon at the TideWell booth at a health fair all day long.

But before Mason leaves, he stops by to say good-bye to Rebello. Rebello gives Mason a final scratch and a pat.

“Boy,” he says, smiling down at Mason.

“I wish I had a dog like you.”
