Doctors at Sarasota Memorial Hospital are now using digital cameras to aid in detecting breast cancer in its earliest form. Physicians are able to zoom in, magnify and focus on different parts of the breast tissue during the mammogram, which makes it easier to evaluate irregularities in younger women and women with implants. The American Cancer Society says women cut their risk of dying from breast cancer by 30% with regular mammograms, and SMH encourages women ages 40 and older to get an annual mammogram. Identifying stickers placed on produce that can stick to one another in storage and can easily be removed might soon be replaced with a more permanent mark — a laser tattoo. According to the USDA, the Agricultural Research Service and the University of Florida are testing this tattoo technology called “laser etching,” which would label such produce as grapefruit. The etching into the fruit peel does not increase water loss or allow the entrance of food pathogens if the label is covered with wax.

Sarasota seniors get physical for self defense Senior citizens learned how to fend off attackers during a self-defense class featuring expert safety techniques.

Most people freeze when an unsafe situation arises. Walking away is usually the best thing to do, but a new self-defense class for seniors teaches them to use their voice and upper body — preferably the elbow.

Sonie Lasker, national karate champion and captain of the U.S. Martial Arts Team, presented seniors with several techniques they can practice for personal protection Thursday, Oct. 1, at the North Sarasota Senior Friendship Center.

“When people think of martial arts, they think kick, strike and punch,” Lasker said.

“But, it’s really about personal growth and feeling good. I’m here to be a role model and help them learn who they are.”

Lasker, who just returned from the 2009 World Martial Arts Games in Australia — and broke a record by earning six gold medals for the U.S. — has practiced the sport for eight years. She’s worked mostly with children, women and seniors and has also developed a selfdefense-and-safety class at Girls Inc. that she ran for three years.

“Always walk like you know what you’re doing and where you’re going,” Lasker said. “Listen to your instincts.”

A believer of non-violent weapons, she never carries a gun, taser or mace, because they can be used against the owner. She instructs seniors to use anything they have to feel safe — canes, purses and even driving their heel into the side of the attacker’s knee, which pos-

sesses a ligament necessary for walking.

She recommends that women use their fingernails to scratch, but to never punch with their fists because they can break.

“You can simulate answering your cell phone by elbowing your attacker in the face,” Lasker said. “Or, use the bottom of your hand and slam it into the attacker’s face. It doesn’t matter how many classes you’ve been to — keep practicing.”

Team Believe keeps a faithful walking routine Eleven members of Team Believe will take thousands of steps to complete the 60-mile course of the Breast Cancer 3-Day. Laura Morris bolted into church for Sunday service wearing a sweaty pink T-shirt and collapsed into a pew. If she had taken the time to change clothes, she would have been late.

Morris had just finished a 15-mile walk with nine of her friends as part of their training program for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile walk that they had signed up for with their friend, team cocaptain and two-year breast-cancer survivor, Flora Kirwan.

The group planned to walk the Breast Cancer 3-Day last year, but Kirwan was undergoing chemotherapy.

The friends have been training six days per week for the walk, to be held Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, in Tampa, and, on every walking occasion, they sport their team shirt — a pale-pink T-shirt bearing a gray cross wrapped with the breast cancer ribbon symbol and the words “Team Believe” printed across the top.

“Our shirt says ‘believe’ because we all believe in the same things,” said Gina Damico. “We’re all truly in tune to spirituality. Flora is our survivor and the reason we walk. No one has as much energy and spirit.”

Team Believe began training for the Breast Cancer 3-Day in May. As rookies, they anticipated the walking would be easy. But after five months of grueling walking and cross-training six days per week — some of which involved walking 15 or 18 miles — the team feels like it has walked a million miles around Sarasota.

And they have the chafing and blisters to prove it.

“I can tell you I have gone through three sets of sneakers,” Jody Siefert said.

She earned the nickname “Blister Queen,” after several teammates witnessed her stitching a blister shut with

a needle and thread, which quickens the healing process.

“I’ve only had two blisters, but I’m going to get a new knee when I’m done,” joked Ann Marie Battaglia. “You think

Battaglia was so exhausted after one walk that she burst into tears on the Ringling Bridge. Co-Captain Kelly Abercrombie fell asleep at a Bee Ridge stoplight after walking 27 miles during a two-day period.

“We’ve been training with Team Walking in Sunshine, which is in its fifth year,” Damico said. “They have been amazing to take us in, help us train and share stories. We are very prepared.”

To keep the team spirit soaring and keep eyelids from closing on walks that begin as early as 5:30 a.m., Rico straps an iPod to his back and blares ’80s wedding tunes such as “We are Family.”

“On the days that Cesar is working and we’re without music, we’re not very happy,” Barbara Cain said. “If we weren’t together, I don’t think I could do it.”

Raising the mandatory $2,300 per person proved much easier than walking in the blazing 90-degree weather. The team started the fundraising process by e-mailing everyone they knew.

Next, Siefert held a successful garage sale. After asking her friends to bring donated items to her house, Siefert sold five bicycles, several guitars, baby cribs and more, and raised $1,000. Strangers stopped by just to donate money to the cause.

Next, the team held a spin-a-thon at Gold’s Gym — which also sells five styles of pink Team Believe T-shirts — and raised $2,600, followed by a Texas Hold ’em poker night that earned them

Oncology massage provides a healing touch Massage used to be avoided by cancer patients who thought it could cause metastases. Now, many patients are using it to cope with symptoms and side effects of treatment.

Sherry Linhart goes to weekly chemotherapy sessions as part of her breastcancer treatments. But, recently, she began an additional form of therapy, one that helps the Longboat Key resident to relax: She visits Liz Yerkes, a Longboat Key licensed massage therapist, for an oncology massage.

“When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you want to be busy, but you also want to be peaceful,” Linhart said.

Her doctor approved her six-day-perweek workout regimen, so Linhart felt confident that massage therapy and the increase in circulation it provides would be beneficial as well.

Yerkes said a common perception 20 years ago was that cancer patients and massage didn’t mix. Although there was no medical basis for the myth, many people believed that increasing circulation, through massage and exercise, could cause metastases by spreading cancer cells throughout the bloodstream and lymphatic system. Now, she said, massage is commonly recommended for cancer patients to combat depression, anxiety and insomnia and to ease pain, nausea and peripheral neuropathy.

Linda Lee, LMT and certified yoga therapist, said that massage therapy helped her recovery when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago. Massage brought oxygen to her brain, helping her to focus while she underwent chemotherapy, and also strengthened her immune system. It also helped her to feel like she was taking an active role in her recovery.

“Doctors can only do so much,” Lee said. “They’re concentrating on drugs and therapy to save your life. You’re becom-

ing actively involved. You’re no longer a victim.”

John Kleinbaum, Ph.D., a psychologist and program director of The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida, said that he often recommends oncology massage to the patients he counsels.

“We talk about it as a reliable, unproblematic way of trying to cope with symptoms without the side effects of sleep medications and pain medications,” Kleinbaum said.

Oncology massage differs from traditional massage therapy in that it tends to be lighter. Yerkes said she might use onethird of the intensity on a cancer patient than she would use during a traditional massage to avoid pain. For a patient whose diagnosis is terminal, she uses even less pressure.

Parts of the body from which lymph nodes have been removed are avoided, because pushing blood toward that area can cause lymphedema, a blockage of the lymph nodes. Massage therapists also avoid areas in which cancer has spread to the bone.

Cancer massage also has added psychological benefits. Patients and those who treat them say cancer can be a lonely disease, with friends often distancing themselves from the patient, unsure of how to act. The touch itself can create a therapeutic connection.

“Patients feel better faster,” said Cristobal Planas, LMT and owner of Cristobal’s Massage & Therapy on St. Armands Circle. “It’s a very human effect, the feeling that they don’t have to feel alone.”

Sarasota follows boot-camp buzz A word-of-mouth boot-camp class draws a crowd every Thursday under the Ringling Bridge.

There’s no angry drill sergeant commandeering boot camp under the Ringling Bridge. Heading it up is a Sarasota cardiologist who’ll make you bark like a seal and scream words such as “puke,” while your stomach muscles struggle during sit-ups.

Every Thursday evening, a group of 20 people wearing sneakers and spandex strolls into the grassy park beneath the Ringling Bridge. They set up camp by unrolling a yoga mat or towel and gulping down water.

There’s no class title, contract, fees or a Web site. Everyone who participates knows about the camp through word-of-mouth.

It’s been ongoing for two years since Charlie Scott, Chris Keesecker and Dr. Jerold Saef started running and biking the Ringling Bridge together. Scott now holds a Tuesday boot-camp class for beginners at Payne Park. Keesecker can be found driving the Java Dawg bus, at the Downtown Farmers Market.

“We’re adults getting together to play,” said Saef, also known as “Doc Hollywood,” who leads the boot-camp class. “Thursday is my favorite day of the week — I love being out here.”

Saef has no written exercise routine but insists on being inventive by hitting notes

only dogs can hear with his voice while he pumps the class up for jumping jacks, situps, push-ups and weightlifting.

“He’s a monster!” jokes one class member while he yells out “yay!” “puke!” and “hoorah!” during various levels of a sit-up.

Saef has names — and amusing gestures — for everything. Sometimes the class practices “Beethovens,” aka jumping lunges. They also “ride the Harley” by extending their arms outward and repeatedly crouching down into a squat position.

Sometimes, they imitate a seal by touching their stomachs to the ground, leaning forward, arching their necks and barking.

Noise must be made.

After the third class, everyone gets a nickname. Nicknames range from “Sparkles” and “Laser” to “Buzz,” “Squid’ and “Shrink.” If attendees are unable to recall the nickname of every person in the class, they must pump out an additional 10 push-ups.

“I practice what I preach,” Saef said.

“The biggest thing the class does is build a solid core — the lower-and-upper body are a lot easier if you can hold your position, because it takes less energy and effort.

Boot-camp instructor motivated to give back

What started as a part-time job 20 years ago has morphed into a lifelong dedication for Yvette Bernosky, personal trainer and owner of Yvette’s Health & Fitness Center, on Orange Avenue. Bernosky took a job at Bath & Racquet Club because her best friend worked there, but after encouragement from her boss, she soon became a certified aerobics instructor, and her career built up from there.

“I’m very passionate about what I do,” says Bernosky, who holds 10 different health-and-fitness certifications.

And her dedication is obvious.

Every morning, Bernosky posts a fitness/health tip of the day on her Facebook page. And her free, bayfront boot-camp classes, held every other Saturday morning, are sprinkled not only with workout tips, but nutritional and weight-loss information.

After a quick warm-up near the “Unconditional Surrender” statute (complete with tips on staying hydrated — drink water every 20 minutes when working out), Bernosky tells the group that it is important for each person to work out at his or her own pace. “I see it as my way to give back to the community,” Bernosky says of the free classes. Her regular boot-camp classes take place Monday through

After each person completes the cardio portion, the group meets at the gazebo underneath the bridge.

Everyone grabs a spot and follows Bernosky through a series of lunges, knee-lifts, punches, push-ups and ab work — all moves that are done with one’s own body weight.

“Work out at your own pace,” she says. “Keep breathing; good job!”

After the strength-training segment is complete, Bernosky moves underneath the gazebo to lead the class through stretches. While doing so, she also quizzes them on information they learned earlier.

“How many minutes does it take to enter the fat-burning zone?” she asks.

“Twenty!” the group shouts.

During the walk back to their cars, first-time attendees Angie Lincoln and Janel Huckleberry vow they’ll be back again.

“A couple of weeks into my first studio boot camp, I had my back turned and I heard everyone talking,” Bernosky says. “It was the first time that I realized people were also creating friendships.”

Fitness instructor gets a lift from exercising Susan Kelly teaches a fat-burning class called Body Pump that uses barbells to tone and condition muscles.

Susan Kelly’s body pumpers never miss class — unless they’re being rushed to the hospital via ambulance.

Kelly, 53, has been instructing group fitness classes at Lifestyle’s Family Fitness for five years. She is an ACE- and LesMills-certified personal trainer and currently teaches Body Pump, a strengthand-toning class; Cycle, a high-energy cycling workout; and RPM, a class that incorporates cycling, choreography and motivational coaching techniques.

Kelly answered her phone Friday, Oct. 2, only to find her exercise aficionado, Aimee McKay, in a panic. Through deep breaths and sobs, McKay explained she had just been T-boned at a stoplight and was riding in the back of a paramedic van.

“She called crying — not because of the accident — but because she was going to miss Body Pump,” Kelly said.

“They thought she had broken her arm and injured her back, but she was just bruised because her core was so strong from class.”

Kelly fell for fitness in college when she attended Western Illinois University. She graduated with an education major and fitness minor and taught at Chicago high schools until she married her husband, Victor, and had children. Her main form of exercise was walking strollers until she entered her 30s, when she finally traded the ski machine in her basement for group cycling classes. When a woman in one of her classes told her she was built to teach cycling, she made her move.
