eritage Harbour resident Lindsay Ball’s favorite time of day often is when she’s on the road.

But, she’s not in her car. Instead, she’s biking to work.

“I really enjoy it,” said Ball, e-commerce marketing manager for Bealls. “It’s a 15-minute drive or a 15-minute ride. You don't have the stress of being in traffic.

I have a really stressful job and being able to walk in and fire on all four cylinders has really helped me.”

ters, in Bradenton, as a way to help with training for the September 2012 Augusta 70.3 half Ironman triathlon. But once she calculated her route, the distance proved to be only about five miles each way.

“It didn’t make sense,” Ball said, noting the biking portion of the half Ironman is 56 miles.

But, about two years ago, Ball began working out in the mornings. She noticed her morale was better and stress level improved.

She tried biking to work at the end of summer and loved it until the time changed and it became too dark too quickly.

But, she began her to-work route again in March. The ride to the office gives Ball time to mentally prepare for her work, while the ride home gives her time to de-stress.

“If you’ve had a rough day, you can pick up the speed and get it all out,” Ball says. “But if not, you just have an enjoyable ride home.

Ball typically rides her bicycle to work twice a week because of scheduling restraints or weather,

but she’d ride every day if she could.

She overcame her worries about having appropriate work clothes and being clean by bringing spare sets of clothes to the office on days she drives and keeping baby wipes and other supplies at her office. On biking days, she keeps her hair in a pony tail.

On National Bike to Work Day, May 15, Ball hopes to bike to work, as she often does. But, she says, others should try it as well. If you live within three to five miles of your office, map out a safe route, find a comfortable bicycle and go.

She suggests making sure your route has bicycle lanes and that you wear a helmet for safety.

“Just try it,” she says. “I think you’ll be surprised by how easy it is if you plan it and then it becomes habit.

“I like it because when I make time for a bike ride, all I have to do is ride my bike,” she says. “We live in Florida. It’s so beautiful out. On a bike, you have to be alert. It’s kind of great to take that all in.”

About five years ago, Jennifer Mumford Brady, 56, started riding her bike to work after the lease was up on one of her family’s cars. The ride to and from work is her favorite part of her day.

“I have participated in a lot of longdistance biking, but biking to work is such a pleasurable thing to do,” Mumford says.

“It gives you time to think. When I have a problem to solve or an issue to deal with, I try to save it for the ride home.”

Mumford’s lifestyle now revolves around biking to work. She does all her grocery shopping on the weekends and plans all her menus ahead of time.

1 OPERATING SPACE A bicyclist needs a minimum of four feet of operating space to balance and steer around surface hazards. This does not include clearance from fixed or moving objects.

2 MINIMUM LEGAL

PASSING CLEARANCE A motorist must give a bicyclist a minimum legal passing clearance in many states. It is measured from whatever device sticks out the farthest. Three feet is inadequate for large vehicles and high speed differentials.

Treatment pinpoints headache solution Not just for cosmetics, Botox is also used to treat migraines.

When she retired after 42 years as a registered nurse, Georgianne Speir quickly fell into a routine of booking as many cruises to the Carribean with her husband, David, as they could.

But, five years ago, Speir, 71, started experiencing migraines.

Each year, they became more frequent and grew in intensity.

“Some days, I couldn’t get out of bed,” Speir said. “I spent a lot of time flat on my back in the dark and quiet in my bedroom. Some nights, I would stay up all night with a headache that lasted 24 to 48 hours.”

In August, Speir visited Dr. Gennady Gekht, of Coastal Orthopedics in Lakewood Ranch, and received her first round of a treatment that has helped ease her migraines — Botox.

For more than 10 years, Botox has been used to treat migraines.

And to date, the Lakewood Ranch-based pain management specialist who specializes in neuromuscular disorders has lost track of how many patients he has used Botox on for migraines.

“Thousands of people have benefited from Botox for headaches,” Gekht said. “At least 50 to 60% of the people I’ve treated have a significantly improved way of life.”

HOW IT WORKS

Gekht injects 31 tiny needles into the front and sides of the patient’s face and the back of the neck.

The locations for the needles are crucial because there are four common headache trigger points on the face and head, such as the forehead and temple.

The procedure takes five to 10 minutes and is relatively painless, Gekht and Speir agree.

“It just feels like light pinches, but it ends so quickly,” Speir said.

Botox blocks the neurotransmitters that control the pain in the face. But, the procedure doesn’t numb the areas where it’s injected, Gekht said. Botox just dulls the pain emitted from the transmitters, or nerves.

There isn’t a designated migraine end date, though. The success of Botox treatment varies on a case-by-case basis.

Side effects are rare, but include body achiness, problems swallowing, weakness and blurred vision.

There are also physical benefits patients observe after having the procedure, such as a tightening in the forehead.

MANAGING MIGRAINES

Before deciding whether Botox is the appropriate treatment for migraines, patients must first consult with their primary doctor.

Having headaches for more than two weeks a month and for more than four hours at a time is considered severe, and makes an individual a candidate for the treatment, Gekht said.

“Not every headache is a migraine,” Gekht said. “This treatment is most beneficial for people who are really debilitated from this type of pain.”

A doctor must recommend the treatment, which is covered by most insurance companies.

For Speir, who is due for another treatment at the end of May, the shots have been “miracle workers.” After the second injection she received in the fall, her migraines dropped from weekly to one a month. Now she only has migraines for four to six hours at a time, rather than for two days.

Now that she’s feeling better, Speir hasn’t wasted time planning more trips.

She just returned from a cruise to the eastern Carribean, and, in July, she’s helping her daughter’s family settle into its new home in Arkansas.

“Migraines took away our life completely,” Speir said. “We’re just starting to get it back.”

on’t have a gym membership or a workout system at home? Don’t let that keep you from getting fit.

Personal trainer Sean Afrouzi says you don’t need either to get in shape.

Here, he’s crafted a workout you can do at home with virtually no equipment in just 30 minutes.

“I covered core, cardio/respiratory, upper and lower-body training and balance,” Afrouzi says.

For this routine, perform each exercise for 30 seconds and complete two sets of each exercise.

Make sure to rest for one minute after every five sets.

“If you feel advanced and you don’t need the breaks, go for it,” Afrouzi says. “But monitor your heart rate.”

1 JUMPING JACK, SAGITTAL Place your feet in a split stance with one foot in front and one foot behind and arms overhead.

As you jump and switch legs the arms come back down. They go back up as you jump and switch legs again.

2 JUMPING JACK, FRONTAL This is your traditional jumping jack. Start with your feet together and hands at your side. As you jump your feet out to shoulderwidth apart or wider, stretch your arms wide before raising your arms above your head.

3 BURPEE Begin in a standing position. Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground. Kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended. Immediately return your feet to the squat position. Jump up from the squat position. Repeat.

1 FLOOR BRIDGE Lie on your back on the floor, knees bent and your feet on the floor. Place your arms by your side, out slightly from your body and place your palms up. Squeeze your stomach and butt to lift your hips off the ground. Hold slightly before lowering to touch your hips against the floor and lift back up.

2 OPPOSITE LEG TO OPPOSITE ARM CRUNCH Lie on your back, feet together, with your hands touching your head and elbows out, flat against the ground. Pull into a crunch position, drawing in your left knee to your right elbow.

Switch, so your left leg is extended and your right knee touches your left elbow.

4 3 DOUBLE CRUNCH KNEE HUG Lie on your back with your arms stretched out to either side. Flex at the hips and bend your knees to raise your stomach and legs off the ground. Bring your arms to your knees in a hug position, hold, and return to your starting position.

4 AIR CLIMBER Start with your hands and feet on the floor in plank position. Your stomach should

be tight and your back should be straight. Tighten your abs as you bring your right knee to your chest, and then return to plank position. Continue this movement, alternating between bringing your left and right knee to your chest.

5 PLANK Move into push-up position with your hands on the floor and toes on the ground, feet together. Your arms should be about shoulder-width

Then, bend at the elbow first and then lower your body to dip downward, before lifting up again. Repeat.

Dr. Mauricio Concha was 20 minutes into his on-call stroke alert shift for the emergency room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, but he had to attend a post-stroke wellness program meeting across town. He hoped that no potential stroke patients would come into the hospital while he was away.

But, sure enough, his phone buzzed during the meeting.

“STROKE ALERT,” the text message read. Someone possibly suffering from a stroke had arrived in the ER.

Concha faced a decision: Leave his meeting and rush back to the hospital or utilize technology.

At best, the drive would have taken him 30 minutes in rush hour traffic. For people suffering from a stroke, time is critical.

Once a stroke starts, the patient has about three hours to receive treatment to minimize the debilitating effects of a stroke.

So, Concha chose the second option and excused himself from the meeting to connect to Sarasota Memorial’s telemedicine web camera through his iPhone. He assessed the patient, interviewed the family and directed staff to

give treatment, all within 20 minutes of receiving the stroke alert.

Concha then finished his meeting and went to the hospital afterward to check on the patient, who was already improving.

Thanks to Sarasota Memorial’s stroke telemedicine program, neurologists and on-call doctors can remotely assess a stroke patient and save precious minutes during a stroke. The program launched in 2013 but has been refined over time. It started with one camera in North Port’s ER, but now SMH has installed a camera for its own ER and is expanding the program to the DeSoto Memorial Hospital, too.

DeSoto staff is being trained and could to start using the program this month.

The program uses a high-def-

inition camera connected to the Internet to allow specialists and doctors who may be offsite or at a different location to see a patient, assess stroke symptoms and also do an initial interview with family members to learn about the individual’s medical history. Doctors can access the camera through a computer at the hospital or on their laptops, tablets or smartphones. The camera can zoom in and be remotely adjusted by the doctor.

“It’s like FaceTime,” said Agnes Kelly, stroke program coordinator at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

“We see the patient on the other side. It’s a virtual interaction.”

Since the program began in 2013, Sarasota Memorial has received about 300 stroke alerts a year.

Without the cameras, which cost about $40,000, patients would either have to be airlifted by helicopter from the North Port emergency room or DeSoto Memorial to SMH or a neurologist would have to drive to North Port or DeSoto hospitals, which don’t have neurologists on staff.

“Treating stroke is a risky business,” said Concha, the medical director of SMH’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “You can’t wait 45 minutes. Time is essential.”

Before, most details of a

patient’s condition would be communicated over the phone between the North Port ER staff and the Sarasota team. Without seeing the patient in real time, it made it more difficult to make an accurate assessment, Concha said.

A real-time assessment can save time and money too, if it turns out that the patient did not have a stroke, because he or she can then be treated at his or her location without being moved to Sarasota.

The concept of telemedicine has been evolving for years, but now is gaining widespread acceptance, Concha said.

“It’s a huge revolution in medicine, there’s no question,” Concha said. “Telemedicine transfers urban services to rural areas at very little to no cost.”

The summer season is upon us, which means ample opportunity to train outdoors and soak up the Florida sun. But, before heading to the beach or going for an outdoor run, make sure you take extra precaution to protect your skin. The sun’s rays are strongest in the summer months from May through August.

DID YOU KNOW?

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

MADE IN THE SHADE The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Employ the shadow rule: If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s UV rays are stronger.

BURN NOTICE A person’s rise for melanoma skin cancer, the deadliest form of skin cancer, doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns throughout their lives.

BY THE NUMBERS

When outdoors, one of your best defenses against the sun is to wear clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Densely woven and bright- or dark-colored fabrics offer the best defense.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?

Sunscreen works to block the sun’s UVB rays (broad spectrum sunscreen offers protection from both UVB and UVA rays).

UVB rays cause sunburns, while UVA rays have more long-term effects such as wrinkles, dark spots and premature aging. The SPF rating measures how long it would take you to get a sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen (SPF 15 means you can stay in the sun 15 times longer than now wearing sunscreen).

SPF 15 blocks about 94% of UVB rays; SPF 30 block about 97%; and SPF 45 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. Sunscreens higher than SPF 45 do offer increased protection against UVB rays, but no sunscreen can offer 100% protection.

Apply one ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget your ears, hands and feet. Reapply every two hours or more often if you are swimming or sweating/working out.

A financial guru who often works from his home office in his Rye Wilderness residence, Graham de Gottal could easily watch TV or order pizza for lunch between phone meetings with colleagues

and clients.

The U.K. native grew up eating English roasts and Cadbury chocolate bars, which he still brings home to his children after trips to visit his mother overseas.

In his older years, drinking Guinness with his friends at a local pub was a regular occurrence.

But today, at 56, he is healthier than he’s ever been.

“I feel better and faster than when I was 25,” de Gottal said. “I have more energy and I’m sharper now; I’m more on top of things.”

De Gottal attributes his health boost to running regularly around his East County neighborhood and his obsession with running marathons.

He’s the neighbor with beads of sweat dripping down his face, hidden below his visor, a sweatsoaked neon yellow T-shirt, his favorite Saucony Guide sneakers and a smile.

“I’m sure people who see me running in 94-degree weather think, ‘Oh, there’s that happy idiot running again,’” de Gottal said, laughing.

Since his first 26.2-mile race in 2008, de Gottal has run 24 marathons, including the 2015 Boston Marathon April 20.

He had never even run a 5K. His wife, Wendy, thought he was crazy.

But de Gottal started running a few times each week, and a few months before his 50th birthday, he participated in his first marathon in Kiawah Island, S.C.

AN UNLIKELY HOBBY

When he lived near a community college in New Jersey in the early 2000s, de Gottal occasionally lapped the school’s track.

After jogging four times around the venue he was winded and achy and walked slowly back home.

Although he had coached children’s soccer leagues and considered himself fairly active, de Gottal wasn’t in great physical condition.

“I didn’t — and still don’t — enjoy pumping iron, sprinting or even stretching,” de Gottal said. “I ran because I just liked it.”

After hearing a colleague discuss his intent to run in the Boston Marathon, he decided he wanted

After his first marathon, de Gottal was exhausted and swore he’d never participate in another. But after his energy returned a few hours later, his mind felt clear. His body still ached — but in a good way.

“A lot of people train just to run one marathon and then stop,” de Gottal said. “I just wanted to keep going.”

De Gottal made it a personal goal to run at least one a year.

Next year, he’ll run in a marathon in New Jersey.

When he first heard about the Boston Marathon, de Gottal didn’t realize its importance to runners. Now, he has participated in the event twice. Each time he has experienced a strong sense of accomplishment, partially because of the hilly terrain and cooler temperatures that make running there different than running through his neighborhood.

“The Boston Marathon means so much to runners, and I understand that now,” de Gottal said.

“It’s the most prestigious event that marathon runners strive toward. It’s an honor to be allowed to run in it.”

Graham de Gottal’s favorite aspect of his fitness routine is that he doesn’t have one.

He runs two to six times a week for 90 minutes to two hours at a time. He prefers to run on weekends, though, when he has more free time. And, he never sets a time or day to run, which makes running more enjoyable for him.

DIET

Salads and vegetables dominate the lunch and dinner menus at the de Gottal house. Graham de Gottal’s ideal salad is a generous helping of lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, raisins and honey mustard dressing. He knows the creamy salad topper isn’t the healthiest option but to create healthier eating habits, he takes liberties with spicing up his greens. Baked and sweet potatoes are also kitchen staples incorporated into the recipes his son, Thomas, who is the household cook, whips up each week. De Gottal estimates he eats balanced, healthy meals four days a week.
