mong the neatly trimmed bushes and landscaping on the west side of Tara’s entrance, a yellow sign now reads, “10.33 Acres For Sale.”

It’s an advertisement for property that currently can’t be commercially developed.

A judge soon will decide any changes in its fate.

Attorneys for Manatee County and for Lake Lincoln LLC, developer of the Tara community, will meet in the courtroom in June in hopes of ending a seven-year, property-rights dispute.

In October 2010, Manatee County denied Lake Lincoln’s request to commercially develop the 10.33-acre property at the southwest corner of Tara Boulevard and State Road 70. Lake Lincoln wanted to change zoning from planned development residential to planned development commercial.

beyond overflowing, attended the meeting to oppose the project primarily because of safety concerns about accessing the property along with community aesthetics.

Those worries remain.

“We’re just cheering the county on,” said John Leone, who was part of the original opposition efforts and now serves as president of Tara’s master homeowners association. “There’s not much else we can do.”

Lake Lincoln believes its development rights for the property were stripped away. It now will have to prove its case in court.

“We believe all of the economic or private economic use has been taken from the property,” said Bill Moore, Lake Lincoln’s attorney. “That property is a 10.3-acre parcel that’s left to be developed.

Since all of that has been taken and the county has said there isn’t any other private use to be made of it, we think that’s a taking.

“This case is unusual in that the county very seldom takes all the private economic use rights away from a property,” he said.

“It’s not absolutely unique, but it’s certainly unusual.”

The Manatee County Attorney’s Office declined comment.

Commissioners’ actions over the years have cemented their support for their 2010 decision, refusing to accept offers by Lake

Tara’s developer, Lake Lincoln, put up a for-sale sign on the property in question in January.

Lincoln for the county to pay a minimum of $1.8 million to avoid litigation. At the original public hearing, the commission had approved a land-use matrix that supposedly gave Lake Lincoln a way to commercially development a larger portion of its property east of Tara Boulevard.

A jury will not be seated for the June trial. Judge Diana Mooreland will determine whether the county’s 2010 action destroyed Lake Lincoln’s rights to use and develop the land economically, amounting to what is called a “taking.”

If the judge rules Manatee County did not take Lake Lincoln’s land, the case will be over, subject to an appeal. If the judge favors Lake Lincoln, however, the

case then will go to a jury trial to determine how much Manatee County must pay Lake Lincoln as compensation.

John Agnelli, vice president of Lake Lincoln, said the property in question is virtually unsellable at this time and Lake Lincoln has not set a price for the property, but the for-sale sign on the land is a reminder of what he hopes will be a favorable outcome for development.

“We want to keep the interest going on the property,” he said.

“It’s not like anyone is going to buy it. Anybody who looks at it, would know its use is subject to the county lawsuit.”

August 2011: Lake Lincoln asks commissioners to allow development on the 10.33-acre parcel, and to pay $1.9 million to Lake Lincoln in exchange for Lake Lincoln’s 45-acre preserve near Jiggs Landing. The commissioners rejected the proposal.

May 2012: Lake Lincoln files a lawsuit claiming Manatee County’s denial of the application “inordinately burdened” the property and destroyed Lake Lincoln’s rights to use and develop the property.

February 2015: Mediation between Lake Lincoln and Manatee County fails.

June 2016: County rejects Lake Lincoln’s proposed settlement offer to either rehear its development request or pay $2.3 million.

June 12: Case goes to trial in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court in Manatee County.

evin Ingle, a Florida Department of Transportation project engineer, seemed to enjoy playing with the toy cars.

Ingle was pushing around a Hot Wheels car, rolling it across a roughly 6-foot-long printout of the diverging diamond interchange to illustrate his points during a public workshop April 4 at Everglades University in Lakewood Ranch.

It all provided a great visual for how traffic will flow through the interchange at University Parkway and Interstate 75, which is expected to switch in June to its new traffic pattern.

Whether the public enjoys it remains to be seen.

For members of the public, like Greenbrook’s Sharon Niel, the meeting and the maps available helped relieve concerns about how the interchange will function.

“I’m not fearful of it,” Niel said.

“I think it’s going to be fine if people will concentrate. The most important thing is to know where you are headed.

The Florida Department of Transportation put out a roughly 8-foot-long map of the interchange and used Hot Wheel cars to help the public understand the traffic flow through the diverging diamond interchange.

CONFLICTS AVOIDED FDOT officials said one benefit of the diverging diamond design is safety because it eliminates potential crash sites, compared with a traditional diamond design. For

example, in a conventional diamond intersection, there are 26 total conflict points — 10 crossing, 10 merging and eight diverging. With the diverging diamond, there are 14 total — two crossing, six merging and six diverging.

Along with learning a new traffic pattern, the public was made aware the speed limit on University Parkway between Market Street and Cooper Creek Boulevard will be lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph.

Although it would seem the lower speed limit might lead to extra time to get through the area, Ingle said it, in fact, will drop time from everyone’s trip through the area.

He said the new design allows for more “green light” time for all traffic movements.

“The amount of delay time expected at University Parkway and Cattlemen Road will be 40% to 50% less and at University Parkway and Market Street will be 5% to 15% less than it is currently,” FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen said. “The ramps are where the major benefits are realized, with reductions in delay of 55% to 75%.”

The DDI design is a new concept in Florida. In it, the Interstate 75 bridges across University Parkway remain the same,

albeit with a new lane for traffic.

Underneath them, on University Parkway itself, comes the big change. The road diverges so that eastbound traffic under the interstate veers onto what would normally be the westbound lanes and then veers back, and vice versa.

The road is modified so that left turns onto interstate ramps are incorporated into outside lanes, with drivers merging onto them in the same fashion they would merge onto a right-hand onramp. The configuration eliminates left turns across oncoming traffic. All right-turn movements will remain the same.

Ingle estimated the changes will shave off about 90 seconds through the area because cars will no longer back up traffic as they wait to make left hand turns across traffic.

Wait times at individual signals will adapt to the flow of traffic at any given time, so they cannot specifically be quantified, Stublen said.

FDOT officials expect the change will improve traffic flow

and safety at the intersection.

“We’re pretty confident this is going to make a large difference,” Gore said of the project. “When you have innovative change, it can be worrisome. But between the signalization, signage, striping, it should give you confidence.”

Since the traffic pattern will switch in June, East County drivers will see the benefits of the new configuration before the DDI project is completed in August or September.

FEELING SQUEEZED Some drivers say it feels a little crowded while driving on University Parkway under Interstate 75, and they are right. Lanes have been reduced to 10 feet wide in some places to accommodate construction crews without reducing the overall number of lanes available. FDOT project manager Marlena Gore said the narrower lanes will remain in place, even after FDOT implements the new diverging diamond traffic pattern in June because contractors still have work to finish in between eastwest travel lanes. Once the entire project is finished, the lanes will return to 12 feet in width.

iver Club’s John Sackett stood on the sidewalk of Hidden River Trail, facing east, and watched a family of sandhill cranes make its way across the roadway, just past a yellow deer crossing sign.

To him, it was a beautiful sight, albeit a sad one with only three birds — one adult and two babies — traversing the roadway. One of the parents was hit by a car March 30.

“That’s almost exactly where it died,” Sackett said of where the birds were crossing the road.

“There’s a sign warning people about wildlife, and they still can’t seem to slow down.”

Sackett and his wife, Ellen Sackett — along with a slew of other bird watchers and nature photographers — have been watching the sandhill crane nest at the southern end of Otter Lake, near the intersection of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, which has a speed limit of 35 mph, and Hidden River Trail, which has a speed limit of 25 mph.

Dellinger said the cranes are considered water birds, because

they roost in water at night and also build their nests — floating platforms — in the water.

They prefer shallow marshlands or the edge of lakes, where they generally are found in developed communities. However, the birds travel upland for much of the day as they forage for food. They like wide open spaces because they are not particularly agile flyers.

They are unique in that they do not seem to feel endangered by cars.

“They see from point to point when they are walking,” he said.

“A lot of these birds are foraging too close to the roads. People think they will get out of the way, but they won’t.”

Paul Chetlain, director of operations for the Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority, said his staff is aware of only three instances in the past seven years in which sandhill cranes were killed by vehicles on district roadways.

“We hate to see it,” Chetlain said. “But I notice people yielding to them all the time.”

He said the number is low considering how much time the birds spend near roadways.

ourteen-year-old Logan Veith gets his favorite beverage from the kitchen faucet, so he had the proper credentials when asked to judge the taste of water.

Greenfield Plantation’s Veith served as one of five judges during a water taste competition April 7 hosted by Region 10 of the American Water Works Association’s Florida Section, at the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Sarasota Service Office.

“It was really fun,” said Veith, an eighth-grader at Carlos E. Haile Middle School, as he peered at the nine cups of water he had sampled.

Samples came in glass gallonsized jugs from water treatment facilities throughout Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and Hardee counties.

Logan admitted it was hard to differentiate between them, in terms of color, taste, odor and clarity — the four categories for judging. Some did have more sulfur-heavy smells and tastes.

He gave perfect scores to four of

“I think (sample) A or E is what I have at home,” he said. “I drank a lot before I came.”

This year’s taste-test winner was Charlotte County, which dethroned Sarasota County, the winner for the past three years.

Charlotte County advances to the state-level competition April 25 during the Florida Water Resource Conference in Palm Beach. Florida’s winner will compete at the AWWA’s national contest in June.

No order of finish was announced other than the winner.

Although the taste contest is mostly for fun — and bragging rights — utility providers said it is important because it helps raise issues like water supply, treatment and water quality.

“We have so many regulations in the water industry,” said Katie Gilmore, superintendent for the Manatee County Water Treatment Plant. “But, every water plant manager wants the water to smell good, look good and taste good for customers.”

akewood Ranch’s Jay Scheck has put a new spin on his hobby.

Scheck, an avid collector, has nine Japanese slot machines lined up against the wall of his “man cave” in the family garage.

He originally thought his collection of slot machines would be a good way to save money.

“I bought my first one because I thought it took quarters,” Scheck said. “I figured it would be more interesting to throw money in that than just a piggy bank.”

But Japanese slot machines only take tokens.

All of a sudden, it was more of a video game attraction. Japanese slot machines can be loud and obnoxious.

Scheck’s wife, Wendy, said her husband never intended to be a slot machine collector. Then after buying the first one a year ago, it turned into two. Then two turned into nine.

Wendy Scheck is partially to blame. The couple was planning her 50th birthday celebration in June and she decided she wanted to have a casino theme.

It was game on.

“It was like a get-out-of-jailfree card for me to get another slot machine,” said Jay Scheck, who finds the machines on sites like Craigslist and eBay. Scheck is a collector of many different items, calling himself “the guardian of history.”

Although Japanese slot machines are his latest endeavor, he also collects medieval helmets, swords and antique pocket watches.

“If someone doesn’t take care of these things, they will disappear,” Scheck said. “I have been collecting weird things for my whole life.

Everything tells a story, like some of my antique pocket watches.

Some are engraved with ships, and some with little houses.”

He calls Japanese slot machines “cool and weird,” but he also finds them similar to computers.

forcing him to retire.

Fixing the slot machines keeps him in contact with his former job.

“The older computers that I used to work with had ribbon cables and the same kind of connectors that the slot machines do,” said Scheck, who is 45. “The slots have a power supply, which computers have, and they do the same things in terms of function.”

After buying the inoperable slot machines for about $100, he takes the machines apart and figures out how they are wired and how they function.

Wendy Scheck said her husband tried to continue work for Mars, but was forced to retire.

Now, while his wife and daughter, 8-year-old Sofia, are working or attending school, he is at home trying to fill his spare time.

“He is home all the time,” Wendy Scheck said. “And he is a really smart guy, so I like the fact that collecting Japanese slot machines gave him something cool to do with his mind. Also, the fact that his collection is in the garage is great because they aren’t in the house.”

He loves to fix them.

“Since breaking my neck and losing the ability to use my right arm, I couldn’t fix computers anymore like I used to,” Scheck said. “I didn’t expect the first slot machine I purchased to need repair, but it did, and I was able to fix it. I got such a feeling of satisfaction, being able to fix something again, so I started to look for others that were broken.”

Playing the slot machines has become a family event in the Scheck household.

Sofia Scheck loves making it to a bonus round, which includes a lot of noise and flashing lights.

“They are so fun,” she said.

“When you get to the bonus rounds you can win, then you can empty the whole [slot machine] out. I love coming in here and playing with them.”

Aviva welcomes expansion, new leadership Just a few weeks after being named CEO of Aviva, A Campus for Senior Life, Lakewood Ranch resident Jay Solomon helped usher in the senior living community’s next chapter.

The Jewish Housing Council Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Housing Council, broke ground April 6 on a new multipurpose community room for Aviva, a rental senior living community, offering a full continuum of care with independent, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing and rehabilitation options.

Construction will take about seven months and will require demolition of part of the front facade of Kobernick House, Aviva’s independent living space, to expand an existing activity room from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet.

The room will be used not only for Aviva educational and entertainment events, but also by the community. The room will be named The Kretzmer Center at Aviva, in honor of 92-year-old Sarasota philanthropist Ernest Kretzmer, the lead donor on the project.

“This new center is going to allow us to provide more life enrichment programs,” Solomon said, adding the room will seat up to 200 people and can be divided into three rooms to accommodate multiple meetings at a time.

Solomon came to Aviva as an interim CEO in January from CentraState Healthcare System in New Jersey, where he served

a year or more. The timing will be determined by the organization’s national real estate department.

There is a deed restriction on the property that limits the building’s use to the American Red Cross through Aug. 31, 2020. Negotiations with Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch to potentially allow a sale prior to the deed-restricted date have not occurred, Broadwater said.

Red Cross closes Ranch office The American Red Cross closed the doors of its Lakewood Ranch office, 10311 Malachite Drive, on March 31, as part of a nationwide effort to streamline operations and save money.

Rachel Broadwater, the regional chief administrative officer for the American Red Cross covering north and central Florida, said the building no longer will be used for day-today operations or community meetings and instead will be used for storage. Staff and volunteers will use the main office in Sarasota.

The Red Cross plans to sell the building sometime in the future, but Broadwater said that likely won’t come for nearly

Nucci, a freshman at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, will be part of Sailor Circus Academy’s four-person, flying trapeze act in the spring performance that carries the theme “Once Upon a Circus.”

“I really like the flying costumes for this year’s show,” said Nucci, who is 14 and has been involved with Sailor Circus Academy since fourth grade. “I get to wear a genie costume, like the ‘Aladdin’ theme, with cool pants and a shirt with a bunch of beads on it.”

“Once Upon a Circus,” began on April 11 and runs through April 15 at the Sailor Circus Arena in Sarasota.

Sailor Circus Academy is a nonprofit that runs an after-school training program for students in fourth through 12th grades. The academy teaches circus disciplines and life skills. The eightmonth training program begins in August and runs through April.

This year’s class is made up of 104 students. Those students

perform annual December and spring events.

In the spring performance, Nucci is a member of the fourperson flying trapeze team. She likes to think of herself as an adrenaline junky, flying high in the air for the thrill of it.

“I like the feeling of being in midair,” Nucci said. “There is always a before rush, when I’m nervous and about to jump, and an after rush, which is just exhilarating.”

She won’t be the only Lakewood Ranch resident getting a rush.

a rectangular frame while doing swings, tosses and catches another performer, typically a female.

Barg will be the female.

It will be more for Barg, though, who loves the opportunity to act out a role.

“I like that this year’s performance has a different theme

for every act,” Barg said. “I’m Bell from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ which I’m really excited about.

Basically the theatrical element is cool because we’re not just performing like we normally would.”

Barg, who attends the State College of Florida Collegiate School, works on her performance at least

four hours a day, 20 hours a week.

“I go home after practice, collapse onto my bed, and then I have homework to do,” Barg said.

“But knowing I will be performing in front of a huge crowd gives me the feeling that all of my hard work has paid off.”

Beth Graves, the marketing manager for Circus Arts Conservatory, which runs Sailor Circus Academy, said the students’ involvement in the Sailor Circus Academy will lead to personal growth and success in the professional world. Less than 10% of the students in the Sailor Circus Academy eventually find a role in the circus industry.

Lakewood Ranch’s Justine Youssef began getting goosebumps as she sat under the awning at Summerfield Park, reflecting on one of the most traumatizing experiences she has had as a mother.

Though the terrible event occurred eight years ago when her daughter, Alyssa Youssef, was just 14 months old, the memories linger.

“My husband (Nader Youssef) found her face down in the pool, floating,” Justine Youssef said.

“He had to do CPR, then he called the ambulance and she was hospitalized for a month. Something so simple, like leaving the door open, you would never think that would happen. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me, and I would never wish that upon anyone else.”

After Alyssa Youssef’s neardrowning experience, and after she was finally released from the hospital, she had to learn to eat and walk again — a memory that no mother, or father, could easily forget.

Though Alyssa Youssef has no recollection of the events, Justine Youssef remains cautious when

it comes to her children and the water.

Upon hearing the family’s story, Swim Gym owner Anita Pope donated six weeks of free infant survival resource lessons for their youngest son, 8-monthold Adam Youssef. The lessons are priced at $765.

Lakewood Ranch’s Pope presented five sets of lessons to families who applied by submitting their personal stories about why they thought the swim lessons were important. The lessons are in honor of North Port’s Sawyer Gordon, who took lessons from Pope but died in August when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. Gordon was 5.

Gordon’s mother, Summer Gordon, joined with Pope to arrange for the free lessons.

Pope said she had to do something more than sending the family “food and flowers.”

“He had some different developmental issues, but with swimming he excelled, and really liked the water,” Pope said. “When the accident happened we all heard really quickly. I was devastated, and I was thinking about what I’m supposed to do when something like that happens, so I decided to do something in his honor.”

Pope hopes the lessons will save lives.

Pope said there is nothing that can replace parental supervision, but what they teach at Swim Gym is another layer of protection.

“Maybe we can save one or two lives because we decided to do this,” she said.

Alyssa Youssef was upset when she learned her brother had been given swim lessons because she was concerned.

“I was looking back to what happened to me, and I am afraid that it might happen to my brother when he’s there,” Alyssa Youssef said.

But after letting the news sink in, Alyssa Youssef became more excited that her brother might one day be able to swim in the pool with her.

Despite what happened to her, Alyssa Youssef now loves the water.

“I think once he starts swimming he is going to start following me in the water,” Alyssa Youssef said. “Whenever I go swimming, he is going to be popping up everywhere!”

Mustangs’ art screams talent Lakewood Ranch students deliver compelling message with ‘Unheard Voices.’

Lakewood Ranch High art teacher Terry Thompson makes sure her students are heard.

But it’s not their voice that makes the impact. It’s their art.

Her students’ art exhibit, called “Unheard voices,” was on display April 6 during the Lakewood Ranch High Fine Arts Depart-

ment’s annual Spring Art Showcase in the auditorium.

“Mrs. Thompson really gave us high schoolers a voice,” said senior Carina Ferraris, who was displaying one of her water colors. “It feels sometimes we are unable to have our voices be heard. Most high schoolers do not get an opportunity like this.”

In the center of the exhibit was a 10-foot paper mâché tree, which her students worked together to create. Thompson said the tree was built to symbolize “Mother Earth and the maternal attributes of the goddess.”

The students explained their tree in a different manner.

“The kids thought the tree resembled me,” Thompson said.

“That their work was branching off from me, allowing them to create their own expression.”

Senior Mason Rademaker said the tree and the ropes extending from it, and dropping down to the floor in a circular pattern, created a “homey” feel. Whether the tree was built to resemble Thompson, Rademaker said it definitely was female.

“It is a mother, a grandmother, a motherly figure that is there to support you and help you grow as a person,” Rademaker said. “This, to me, resembles a voice of reason and a love that is unconditional, that in turn, fosters the new generation to hopefully view everyone in the same light, with a heart full of love and support.”

Thompson said many of the students’ works ended up being female in nature.

She said her students studied an ancient goddess who represented passion, guidance and love. The lesson was intended to show the students they could approach any situation from those characteristics, rather than with anger or judgement.

“High school kids don’t necessarily know how to come from kindness and love, so I thought this would be good for them,” Thompson said.

She said she hoped those who attended the special event went away remembering to be advocates for the voiceless.

Ferraris’ watercolor was of a Buddhist goddess.

“Her thing was to be a protector, spiritually and physically, so my painting is about strength and protecting each other by standing together,” Ferraris said. “Often, women aren’t told to be strong, or they aren’t viewed that way at least, making us women less likely to stand up and be strong for one another.”

Some of the other students selected historical female figures and tried to allow their work to symbolize women’s views of the world.

Rademaker produced a canvas painting of a girl, who looks distressed and angry. He wanted his audience to sense her pain, suffering and anger, but also see her passion.

His work was titled, “Screaming Girl.”

He called himself a “male feminist.”

“This allowed me to work alongside my fellow classmates who feel so strongly about the women’s movement,” Rademaker said. “I was able to support them and all their passion toward this goal of equality for everyone.”

The students had a bit of a crunch to set up the exhibit, which was being displayed at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg only days before. Thompson holds a degree in human development and a minor in art from Eckerd and through her connection, was able to display her students’ art at the college.

CART RIDERS FISHING FOR TROUBLE 13000 block of Players Drive, Lakewood Ranch Criminal mischief: Two females riding in a golf cart, with what looked like fishing poles attached to it, pulled up to a closed security gate.

The passenger, a female wearing blue shorts, a white shirt and with long hair, got out of the cart and pushed up the closed gate arm as the large iron gates were closing. The female used her back side to force one of the closing gates open, causing it to stay open and leaving it inoperable. The female then jumped on the rear of the

golf cart, and the two women fled the area. The next day, a cart that looked the same had six people riding on it, and they attempted to leave the Country Club with one of the passengers pushing up on the closed gate arm.

This time it was a male who pushed on the gate arm.

Video of the golf cart and riders has been placed into property and evidence. It cost $187 to have the gate reset.

The investigation continues.

FIGHT PUTS MAN IN PICKLE 5300 block of Lena Road, Bradenton Disturbance: A women called the Sheriff’s Office when a group of men got into a fight and she said a table had been turned over and everyone was attacking her husband. Deputies stopped a vehicle leaving the location with several occupants. All the parties worked as drywall refinishers at the listed location. Two of the men were living in a unit in the building that was under construction.

Other workers stored their personal items in an adjacent unit. Items had come up missing from both units. The dispute led to a styrofoam cooler being broken along with a jar of pickles. An air mattress

had a hole poked in it during the dispute. Deputies identified the man who broke the cooler and jar of pickles (dill) and, upon finding he had outstanding warrants, arrested him. It is unknown who poked a hole in the mattress.

HE MUST HAVE WANTED SOUVENIRS 21000 block of State Road 64 East, Bradenton Lost Property: A man contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report his wallet was lost. He was sitting on the top bleachers at a local race track. He was approached by an employee of the track who had his driver’s license and other documents from his wallet. The items were found under the bleachers.

SKY HIGH SPY 800 block of 116th Court Northeast, Bradenton Suspicious Incidents: A deputy responded in reference to a drone. A woman said she was in her backyard walking her dog when she was startled by the drone taking off from the back of her property. She said later the drone was flying around the neighborhood and now has a camera attached. She fears whomever is flying the drone is attempting to spy on her. The person flying the drone is not known at this time.

or a Lakewood Ranch boys 4x800 meter relay team that was on a roll, it might have been somewhat of a shock.

Running at the Pepsi Florida Relays on March 30 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, they were in an unusual spot three quarters through the race.

They were behind.

The team, made up of sophomore Johnny Reid, junior Andrew Dean and seniors Brice Easton and John Rivera, had been running the relay together since their first effort March 17, 2016 at the IMG Academy Invitational. This season, the team has consistently dropped time, finishing in 7:55.18 in its winning effort March 24 at the FSU relays in Tallahassee.

Just when it seemed the Mustangs would suffer a setback, their fate took at a record-setting turn.

Rivera, the team’s anchor and one of the nation’s top individual runners who finished fourth in the 800 on March 12 at the 2017 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships in New York, found an extra gear. He roared back.

“When I came around the second-to-last turn with about 300 meters to go, I popped my head up pretty high and knew I was in contention to get him (Miami Northwestern’s Micheal Thompson) by a lot,” Rivera said. “I knew I had a lot in me. With 250 to go, I took off, I was sprinting, basically.

After the race I looked at the clock and I could not stop cheering.”

That is because the clock read 7:45.58, the fastest time in the

United States at that point this season and a school record. The team had a soft goal to finish under 7:50. They shattered their own expectations. In the end, four of the top five 800 relay times in the country came from that race.

On April 8, Bellarmine Prep (California) ran a 7:45.56 at the Arcadia Invitional to take over top honors in the country.

To put the Mustangs’ effort into perspective, the 4x800 state record in Lakewood Ranch’s class (4A) is 7:40.15, set by Colonial High School in 2012. The overall Florida record is 7:30.31 set by Charlotte High School in 2011, and the national record is 7:28.75, set by Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California.

Easton said his family took video of the Pepsi race. He’s watched it at least five times. The others have seen it multiple times, too.

When he watches Rivera cross the finish line with a fist pump, Easton still gets goosebumps.

Chemistry and trust-building practice runs led to that moment.

Their order has stayed constant since their first race — Dean, Easton, Reid, Rivera — so they all are familiar with their roles.

The bond between them has grown as a result of road trips, which have proven to be fertile ground for long talks and hijinks.

Rivera recalled one hotel stay when members of both the boys and girls track teams decided to hold a pillow fight.

Things went downhill when Rivera went a little too hard and “Supermaned” into an air conditioning unit, leaving a mark on his forehead. His teammates, after finding out he wasn’t seriously hurt, broke into laughter.

The four runners have developed some inside jokes as well.

the handoffs at times, such as the FSU Relays when Dean and Easton almost flubbed it.

“I think it’s just so vital to our success,” Reid said of the athletes’ rapport. “I feel more confident in our relay than I do running in a regular open race because I know we all have each other’s backs.”

Even though they have the second-best time in the U.S., they are not satisfied. The goal is to win a state title, with a soft goal of running a sub-7:40 time. Eleven months ago, those goals would have seemed out of reach, when they finished ninth at state.

Rivera’s emergence on the national scene, and all the runners’ improvement during the cross country season, has set up some huge expectations in terms of winning a state title.

“We’re not going to say it is a guarantee, because you never know what can happen,” Dean said. “But we are confident.”

shell, colored a bright shade of red that helped it stand out to the crowd, go completely diagonal, invading the adjacent lane.

This, of course, is a sport of straight lines. Going sideways in crew best could be compared to sinking.

Feaster and Radloff ceased rowing. They did not know what

else to do. They also had no idea how their shell ended up in that predicament, and still did not when I caught up with them after the race.

All the other shells moved out in front. They were all alone, still at the start, still bewildered, when they realized they had better get going.

“We were freaking out,” Feaster said. “We just said, ‘We are still in this.’”

Back on course, Radloff admitted the inexplicable start made her nauseous for the rest of the race. It did not affect her performance. The only thing more unbelievable than the race’s beginning was its ending.

The duo righted the ship — literally — and started to do the only thing they know: row, and row hard. Radloff said she had never rowed with as much intensity in her life. Feaster, too.

Slowly but surely, the red shell started walking on (or passing) every boat.

The pair came all the way back to win the heat, qualifying for Sunday’s final in the process.

“I’m still shaking,” Feaster said, rubbing her folded arms.

She then said it again, this time quieter. They always had smooth starts, she said, including the previous week in the district championships.

Even in rowing, you can’t predict what’s going to happen.

Radloff and Feaster finished third in Sunday’s final. It was not the finish they wanted, but it was a place on the medal stand.

Considering their start, the pair will take it.

If the youth championships featured this kind of excitement, imagine what will happen when the world’s best descend on Benderson Park? I, for one, cannot wait to find out.

he rowing competition at Nathan Benderson Park on Saturday and Sunday felt a little different.

Maybe it was all the dogs parading about or the smell of Caribbean food in the air.

The weekend featured the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Sculling Championships. With the FSRA Sweep Championships at the end of the month, and everyone in the area prepping for the World Rowing Championships in September, it was a great time to get reacquainted with the sport, or be introduced to it for the first time.

I’m somewhat familiar with rowing, but I would put myself on the side of the “newbie.” One of the things I like about rowing, to me, is its unpredictability.

Usually that unpredictability comes in the form of wind or currents, which in turn can affect who wins. This particular weekend, though, I witnessed something I did not think I would ever see, especially at a state championship-level event.

Keely Radloff and Lauren Feaster, sophomores at Lakewood Ranch High and members of Sarasota Crew, have been rowing for two and four years, respectively, and they both said they had never seen it happen, either.

he egg hunt was over, but 4-year-old Peyton Collins sat gleefully in a grassy field at Greenbrook Adventure Park, reaching her hands into a woven basket, grasping one plastic egg at a time and popping them into her mouth.

Crunch.

The egg split and out popped a treat.

“I love candy,” she said. “My favorite is chocolate.”

Her mother, Amanda, chuckled.

“You don’t want to eat all of it,” she said. “Let’s save some for later.”

Peyton and her brother, Patrick, 5, were two of more than 1,000 children who gathered April 8 at the park for Lakewood Ranch Community Activities’ annual Eggstravaganza. This year’s event included an egg hunt, pictures with the Easter Bunny, vendor booths, food and crafts, music, sack races, a petting zoo and other festivities.

One Walk for a cure

P

alm Aire’s Nancy Kornberger has battled diabetes since she was 21.

Twenty-one years later, she’s still fighting, but with a fan base behind her as team captain of Palm Aire Golf and Country’s entry March 8 in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s One Walk fundraiser.

About 30 Palm Aire residents joined her in the cause to raise money to fight and research Type 1 diabetes.

“Our club’s slogan is ‘Members make a difference,’ and we all support each other’s charities,” Kornberger said. “We’re a family. It’s important to raise awareness in the community about this.”

Kornberger’s team joined hundreds of other walkers from around the area in the 5K and 1-mile walk at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch.

The event, which featured food booths, live music and other festivities, raised more than $218,000 for the cause.

ane Runge, a teacher at The Out-of-Door Academy, has spent 13 years at the school, and her favorite day remains the school’s annual Spirit Day. It’s held out of doors, of course.

“We get to hang outside in this beautiful weather, and the kids just love being able to be outdoors all day,” said Runge, who teaches third grade.

The event was billed as “The Lakewood Ranch Fest.”

University Park’s Kareem Vasquez brought his children, Kamya, Katrina and Kareem Jr. to the event.

“I wanted them to see the place,” said Vasquez, who is a student at SCF. He said they had a great time.

With so much positive feedback, the college might make it an annual event.
