The Lakewood Ranch distillery received the award for the Best Flavored Vodka in North America from Luxe Life Magazine as well as the Bartenders Spirit Award Gold Medal.

“A lot of distilleries make one or two products, and we try to focus on a spectrum of what the customer is going to be looking for,” said Steve Milligan (above), the president and founder of Sun Coast Loaded Cannon Distilled Spirits. “So when you get nominated and win for vodka and bourbon, it kind of tells you you’re working on the right things. Clementi was attending the event with her mother, Katie Clemente, and her siblings, 9-year-old Ava Clementi and 10-year-old Nahla Vlasak, as well as their 12-year-old friend Sophia Darby. The siblings said that one day they had decided to train Luke in how to give hugs, and sat down to do so on their own.

Katie Clementi said she went to the event with the children after finding out about it on Facebook. She said she thought it would be good to bring along Luke, who is well-behaved, and that he was enjoying his time there.

alking around her new Music Compound MAN in East County, owner Jenny Townsend envisioned the flurry of activity taking place once the facility opens for lessons Aug. 1.

Townsend looked toward the 13 studios in the 4,500-square-foot facility and thought about a student and teacher practicing scales on the piano in one room. She imagined the Kidz Rock program in full swing in another studio. She even visualized kids hanging out in the new teen lounge before their lessons begin.

“When I walked in, it reminded me of the feeling I had when I walked into the Cattleman location,” Townsend said. “‘This is home.’”

The original Music Compound location, which is operating at capacity with 500 members, is located at 1751 Cattlemen Road, Sarasota.

Townsend thought she would open another Music Compound in Manatee County, closer to the many of the clients she has in East County.

The original Music Compound has a mission statement of providing “an environment to inspire, collaborate and educate children and adults in pursuit of their love of music.”

The facility gets a test run before its opening to the general public with a summer camp that opened July 18.

Townsend had been hoping to open a new location in Manatee County since 2018, but due to the pandemic and other circumstances, she hadn’t been able to make her dream a reality until June 2 when she signed the lease for the new facility.

“I’m finally getting to those mile-

stones I wanted to achieve a couple years ago,” she said. “I’m excited for my team as well, and I’m excited for all the new people who are joining us.”

Townsend chose Manatee County because she wanted a location close enough to the Sarasota location so she could manage both locations while also serving a new demographic and testing a franchise model.

Of Music Compound’s 465 members, Townsend said about 100 of them live north of State Road 70.

A portion of those members will attend Music Compound MAN, but East County members might want to remain at the Sarasota location because they like working with a specific teacher.

Townsend said her new facility at 4740 S.R. 64, Bradenton, in the Braden River Business Park just west of Interstate 75, was practically move-in ready. All she had to do to prepare the new location was add carpet and paint the walls.

“There’s no massive startup loan, there’s no massive startup expenses, there’s no build-out,” she said.

“With everything going on with construction right now, you can’t get supplies, you can’t find contractors, everything’s really expensive.

In 2020, Townsend had considered a 10,000-square-foot space that would have required a significant build-out. Finances would have been tight.

“It would have been very, very risky,” Townsend said. “I was OK with the risk. I love taking risks.

However, this, I feel, is where we’re supposed to be.”

Sound therapy uses sound, music and special instruments to provide a place for people to relax and meditate.

“I envision that being for people who are either on a spiritual or healing journey, those who are looking for a meditation class or moms who want to attend something while their kids are taking classes,” Townsend said.

The music lounge was designed to give students an opportunity to socialize, make friends and relax before going into their lessons.

Instruments such as guitars will be available for students to grab at any time and start playing. There will be games, crafts and activities for students to do as well.

Music Compound MAN will have a Kidz Rock program, which is a beginner band for 4- to 7-year-olds to learn team building, stage presence and how to play various instruments and music techniques.

ith building construction going vertical throughout the Center Point Development just to the east of the intersection of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and University Parkway in Lakewood Ranch, developer Casto Southeast said it will be a major hub of activity by late in 2023.

Restaurants Lake Park Diner, The Toasted Yolk Cafe, The Thrivery and Crisp & Green were announced this month, joining previously announced Owen’s Fish Camp and Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the 250,000-square-foot project.

Although Olivia, a fine-dining Italian restaurant based in Tampa, is reconsidering its previously announced intention to open in Center Point, Casto Southeast President Brett Hutchens said he is thrilled with the response from businesses seeking to lease within the development.

Hutchens said the theme of the project continues to be health and wellness with businesses such as Yoga Six and Club Pilates, Chamberlin’s Natural Foods grocery store, Crisp & Green, Lake Park Diner and a 73,500-square-foot medical building that already is built and leased out.

“That was one of the things that we tried to stay true to, and I think we’ve been successful,” Hutchens said.

But Center Point Development also gives a nod to convenience with a McDonald’s, a 7-Eleven and a Woodie’s Wash Shack.

According to Massimo Rastrelli, a project manager for the development, the full shopping center is expected to be open by the third or fourth quarter of 2023.

He said some tenant names have yet to be released. He noted that all of the spaces in the center are leased with the exception of one.

Lake Park Diner is named after the neighborhood in Naples where it originated, but according to Colleen

Dunavan, president of Paul Fleming Restaurants, it has found a similar home in Lakewood Ranch.

Dunavan said when they researched the Center Point location, they found not only a site that could attract out-of-towners and commuters, but would receive great support from the local community because of its neighborhood feel.

“Lakewood Ranch was a nobrainer for us,” she said.

Lake Park Diner opened its second location in Bonita Springs and its third location will be Lakewood Ranch.

The diner bills itself as “the future of casual dining,” and advertises its absence of steroids, antibiotics, hormones, or GMOs in its food, as well as sustainable sourcing.

Dunavan said the diner’s menu, which offers a mixture of items that range from salad bowls to hamburgers and fries, is designed for a wide appeal.

She said the diner sources highquality and local ingredients whenever possible.

Dunavan called the menu’s rotisserie chicken “craveable” and said the diner’s cauliflower wings, which are oven roasted, are “nice, and light, and spicy, and balanced.”

Lake Park Diner plans a “light and bright” space with “fun, vibrant music.”

It will offer both indoor and outdoor seating.

The opening is planned late in 2023.

Anna Mignery, who co-owns The Thrivery with her husband Andy Mignery, said the company’s coldpressed juices, and its foods, will fill a demand for natural, healthy offerings.

Mignery said the couple developed a passion for juicing after Andy Mignery was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017 and achieved success in combatting the disease after changing his diet.

Andy Mignery began following an alkaline diet, eating far more vegetable content and far fewer refined sugars and ultimately consuming many more of the phytonutrients found in plant foods. He said the benefits included a healthier weight, better sleep, more energy, and greater mental clarity.

“Through that healing process, we found the power of cold-pressed juice and superfood eating,” Anna Mignery said. “We found the incredible impact they had on our health and the way we felt.”

The couple opened its first The Thrivery location in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2018. However, they decided to move to the Country Club in Lakewood Ranch and relocate the business to Center Point.

“We didn’t have food service backgrounds,” she said. “But it was just something we became very passionate about.”

She said juices are created on-site.

Andy Mignery said the smoothies are absent of fillers such as ice.

“What you have is your meal replacement smoothie with organic fruits and vegetables, and the natural flavor of all the ingredients, which are dairy free,” he said Anna Mignery said the store’s top selling smoothie is its “sweet green,”

Andy Mignery said in Michigan, The Thrivery has partnerships with hospitals and healthcare organizations to vend items there, and he hopes to create similar partnerships in the Lakewood Ranch area.

The location is expected to open in June 2023.

WOOF GANG BAKERY

Lauren Redington, owner Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming, which has been located in Town Center for 12 years, said the new location will offer expanded services.

“When we saw there was a shopping center going in there, we were ecstatic,” Redington said.

She said the new location will be 1,700 square feet of space, whereas the current location has 1,100. Redington said no decision has been made whether to keep the current location open once the Lakewood Ranch location opens.

One advantage of the increased space, she said, will be a quiet room for dogs that require closer attention due to age or behavioral concerns, and might not be comfortable in the regular grooming area.

Also available in this room will be a new massage therapy to provide greater relaxation to dogs who might be anxious before or after grooming, or to provide pain relief to dogs who struggle with arthritis and joint issues.

She said the regular grooming stations for dogs will also be further individualized.

Redington said the new location will include a “boutique vibe” for pet-lovers.

The Lakewood Ranch location is expected to open in June or July 2023.

ALSO ON THE WAY

Hutchens said Crisp & Green will be an interesting option for dining.

Although restaurant management declined an interview, citing the move to the location still being in progress, Hutchens said it is another quality healthy alternative.

At its other locations., the quickservice restaurant’s menu consists almost entirely of bowls, such as a Greek bowl with ingredients including roasted chicken, spinach, feta, olives, hummus, and pita, and a Seoul bowl with ingredients including tofu, roasted mushrooms, cucumber, daikon, and others.

The Toasted Yolk Cafe advertises that it will change the way customers think about breakfast and lunch.

Promotional images show a vibrant atmosphere that differentiates it from that of a typical breakfast restaurant, with locations including bar counters and the menu including beers, wines, and mimosas.

Additional newly announced businesses include Quelliv, a laser cosmetics and pain relief service; and hair cutting services Salon Lofts and Sport Clips.

The Thrivery offers juices that are made in-store and which consist entirely of natural ingredients.

plan to add more paramedics to East Manatee Fire Rescue trucks will be considered July 25 by the Board of Fire Commissioners.

That discussion, and possible vote, was postponed from its scheduled July 18 date when East Manatee Fire Rescue Chief Lee Whitehurst couldn’t attend due to previous commitments, including a Florida Fire Chiefs Association conference.

Whitehurst said the upcoming meeting is intended primarily to serve as a discussion forum, although it has the possibility to produce a vote.

Fire Commissioner James Carlino said the plan is now being considered as a four-year plan, rather than the 10-year plan that had initially been proposed to fire commissioners. He said the plan, which lists a cost of $894,509 for fiscal year 2023-2024, would offer two dedicated Advanced Life Support units on trucks that could ensure a paramedic firefighter on board on all shifts.

Initially, Whitehurst had been working on a 10-year plan, however, Carlino asked him to reduce the length of the plan to cut costs and to give fire commissioners a chance to examine results. Although the fouryear plan would reach its objective by fiscal year 2025-2026, it is budgeted for 10 years as a result of the cost to maintain the services it would create.

Whitehurst said the reduction to a four-year plan altered the plan’s eventual goal of bringing ALS units to 11 East Manatee Fire Rescue trucks.

The resulting plan has focused on bringing ALS units to two trucks at two different stations.

Whitehurst said the creation of the new plan followed the June 21 workshop on Advanced Life Support, an event which included presentations from individuals representing West Manatee Fire and Rescue District, Southern Manatee Fire Rescue, and North River Fire District. All currently operate ALS programs.

AT THE BEGINNING

If approved, the plan would begin in 2023, with its first year focused on hiring and training staff in preparation to offer ALS services. Eight current firemen would receive training to become paramedic certified and would join with new hires who already have paramedic certifications.

The second year of the plan would continue those activities, and would see East Manatee Fire Rescue acquire necessary certifications including a Manatee County Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, as well as a non-transport license, the required paramedic certification from the state.

During years three and four, the rescue would continue to hire and train staff, and would also launch its ALS units. The third year would establish one ALS unit at Station 5 at 59th Avenue East off Lorraine Road, while the fourth year would start the other at Station 1 on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, north of 44th Avenue East.

The estimated cost of the plan is approximately $1 million per year.

One of the biggest costs in initiating the program will be buying defibrillators for the newly certified paramedics, as well as fast-response medical vehicles resembling pickup trucks, which would allow paramedics to arrive at the scene ahead of firefighters.

He said across its four years, the plan would provide for 12 firefighters, at three per year, to become certified as paramedics through a nine-month program.

He said the plan will require the addition of three firefighters to fill in for firefighter absences due to paramedic training. It will also require the addition of a medical training officer to serve as program manager.

Whitehurst said it is up to the board’s discretion how they would like to cover the cost. However, he said to implement the full program, the board would have to either raise taxes or cut back on other expenditures within the fire district.

He said the board has the authority to raise taxes on non-ad valorem taxes up to a state rate of personal income growth that is usually between 5% and 6%, but would have to go through the state Legislature to raise the amount further.

He said on the ad-valorem tax side, revenues are currently capped at $1 million, a number which cannot be changed without a voter referendum during the regular election cycle.

would not require approval from an outside authority within the county, since the fire rescue is a special taxing district. She said the district is permitted by Manatee County to initiate actions including the addition of staff members and paramedics.

Carlino said he was not concerned about spending on the plan.

“We’re not reinventing the wheel,” he said. “We’re not doing anything that three other fire departments in Manatee County haven’t done, so it’s definitely attainable, and I think we’ll have no problem.”

He said more staff are needed anyway, especially with the coming addition of Station 9 on State Road 64 east of Lorraine Road.

The idea of adding ALS has not been without its detractors. The motion to hold the ALS workshop on March 21 passed 3-2, with Commissioners Bob Conley and Garry Lawson voting in opposition.

At the time of the meeting, Conley stated current staff members had not taken advantage of paramedic school despite it being offered, while Lawson cited concerns around funding and the economy, as well as East Manatee Fire Rescue’s accountability through the Florida Legislature’s Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability report.

Although Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is one of the many hospitals across the country that experiences nursing shortages, help is on the way.

In August, Arizona College of Nursing will begin to address that shortage in Florida by opening a campus, its 12th overall, in the Cooper Creek Office Building in University Park.

The new nursing school will serve students in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Jason Dunne, the vice president of operations for Arizona College of Nursing, said the college chose to open more campuses in Florida because of the population growth.

“We have the baby boomer generation that continues to age and retire and at the same time the general population is aging,” Dunne said. “More people are moving into the state, nurses are retiring, which is causing an increased demand for nurses, and nursing school enrollment is not keeping pace with the demand.”

The Sarasota area campus will be the third Arizona College of Nursing in Florida, with other campuses in Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

“We believe we have a strong product of a holistic model of nursing education and support, and we believe we can create a strong pipeline in Florida by strategically placing our campuses in various geographic areas throughout the state,” Dunne said.

Arizona College of Nursing will enroll about 30 students in its first year on the local campus, and classes will begin in August. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in the college six times per year for general education courses and three times per year for nursing core courses.

Students will go through an accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing program to receive their degree in three years or less depending on whether they transferred credits before enrolling.

Dunne said the program only takes three years because classes continue through the summer rather than having a summer break.

“It all depends on the type of student that comes into the program,” he said. “They can come directly from high school with no credits and no college experience or they can come directly to us from a community college. Some have bachelor’s or associate degrees and some are second-career students.”

Students will spend their first year taking general and healthcare foundation courses. Students will finish those courses in their second year and start nursing core courses and clinical experiences before finishing those courses in their third year and participating in clinical rotations.

Students will have hands-on learning experiences not only through their clinical rotations but also in the simulation lab where they can make mistakes and hone clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.

“It creates a wonderful, safe environment for students to go in, practice the skills, pull together the theory and work through real-life patient case scenarios,” Dunne said.

“They can make mistakes and learn from their mistakes and hone clinical judgment and critical thinking skills so when they’re actually working with patients, they’re solid, they’re working as a part of the healthcare team and contributing positively to the healthcare outcomes of the patients.”

Arizona College of Nursing is developing partnerships with facilities under the Healthcare Corporation of America and other medical agencies in Sarasota and Manatee counties where students will be able to conduct their clinical rotations.

“One of the roles of nursing education or any healthcare education institution and facilities is to truly help communities thrive by delivering nurses who are homegrown, who will work within their communities and serve their communities,” Dunne said.

he International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships began with its opening ceremonies Monday along with more testament about the value of sports tourism.

Among the participating athletes were Bindi Clark, Kim Meade, Mark Slater and Dale Whitley, all Gold Coast residents from Queensland, Australia.

The four paddlers said they have booked 11 nights in Florida hotels, most in the Sarasota-Manatee counties region. Most of their trip was booked into the EVEN Hotel in Lakewood Ranch.

They said they already had “pigged out” at the Lucky Pelican in Lakewood Ranch and had many more restaurant visits planned. They already had visited Warm Mineral Springs Park in North Port, and trips to the beach would be a must later in the week.

Although they said they would consider many venues around the world because they love to compete in dragon boat racing, they admitted the Suncoast region, which they called amazing, cemented their plans to participate. They aren’t considering a move to the area, but they might well visit again. They noted July is Australia’s winter.

PUSHING THE PARK

Sarasota’s Beth Turconi won’t be surprised to see that kind of reaction over and over at Nathan Benderson Park during the world championships.

Turconi, who competes in Women’s Senior A Class dragon boat events for Nathan Benderson Park as well as being on the Senior B Mixed team, attended the IDBF 2019 congress meeting in Thailand along with Benderson Park executives Bob Whitford (then operations manager), Stephan Rodriguez (CEO) and Sarah Kupiec (then the park’s director of events and event services).

Turconi didn’t work for the park, but she was in Thailand to compete as a paddler and she went to the IDBF meeting to offer testimony about Benderson Park’s value as a competitive venue.

“They asked me to sell it to the 42 delegates,” Turconi said.

Benderson Park was competing with Hungary and Canada, the two finalists in line for the 2022 IDBF Club Crew World Championships.

“What I said was that I hadn’t paddled in Canada or Hungary, but I had paddled all over the United States and this, by far, was the best water. This was paradise.”

Not only was Benderson Park the best facility for racing, according to

Turconi, but the park itself was promoting all kinds of activities, such as running, rollerblading and fishing.

She said the region had phenomenal restaurants and great places to visit.

Of course, Benderson Park received the bid.

LOTS TO DO

Now, many of the visitors will be enjoying the area’s restaurants and entertainment options, Turconi will stay focused on the competition. At 60, she will be competing against paddlers as young as 40 in her senior women’s class.

“I’ve already seen a lot of posts on social media from people visiting,” she said. “They said how beautiful it was on Sunday, then we had a thunderstorm, and then a short time later it was beautiful again. They were posting about how excited they are to be here.”

Carone said the paddlers are bound to love Benderson Park’s course whether they live in the area or not.

She has visited several world class paddling venues which build lanes and docks just for events. She said Benderson Park’s facilities always remain in place.

While she hasn’t been suggesting restaurants or attractions to paddlers from outside the area, she has directed paddlers from Germany to the nearest Target.

She said hearing all the different languages at the event is one of the highlights for her.

When she travels to paddle, she doesn’t miss the opportunity to sightsee and to support that nation’s or region’s economy. She mentioned winery tours in Italy and a Mardi Gras-type festival in Puerto Rico.

She doesn’t expect foreign paddlers will miss the opportunity to see the sights.

“I don’t believe people travel from Australia just for paddling,” she said.

Ottawa, Canada’s Jocelyn MacKenzie said the members of her Bytown Dragon Boat Team are a bit nervous about visiting area attractions due to COVID-19. But she said they plan to do as much as they can, wearing masks. They’ve already taken a walk on Siesta Key Beach.

It’s something the group from Australia will be doing soon.

The July 18 opening ceremonies were capped by a skywalk by Blake Wallenda, who performed the stunt with relative ease. A contortionist and juggler entertained the crowd after the Kara Nally Band warmed up the proceedings with live music that had many in the crowd dancing.

Competition in the event begins daily at 8 a.m. and is free to the public, although there is a $15 parking fee.

L

akewood Ranch’s Lorraine Robertson was talking about her early days as an artist, and explaining her inspiration.

She started painting late in life, after her retirement at the age of 70, and her first instructor was an extremely shy and quiet man who said almost nothing to her that entire first year.

“He was a less-is-more artist,” said Robertson, who quickly understood the only way she would learn about watercolors from the man would be to watch every move he made. “I found out that am a moreis-more artist.”

After a year, her instructor began to speak and that did speed up the process. She eventually learned more for her meant trying oil painting and acrylics.

The interesting part of the story is that Robertson wouldn’t seem to be a probable candidate for nonverbal instruction. In her pursuit of “more is more” Robertson wouldn’t appear to have the time to be patient. And yet, she is able to turn down the jets when necessary.

Now 87, time is not an abundant resource for a women whose interests cause her to schedule her day by minutes, not hours.

On this particular day, she had an interview scheduled for her just released book, “The Saga of a Holistic Physician.” Then there was her bridge group, a painting session on her “Heroes” series, and a piano recital for 20-something guests she was hosting at her home on the banks of Lake Uihlein.

Oh, and yes, she would be one of the two featured pianists.

If those guests looked around, they would see a home which doubles as an art gallery, with almost all the items created by Robertson’s hand.

in which she competed with her husband, James, who died in 2014.

Then there was the Ms. Senior Florida Pageant she won in August 2017 in North Miami.

If busy equates to healthy, Robertson has produced the roadmap of how to live a senior lifestyle.

In short, she is my hero.

My hero used to be Lew Wallace, the author of Ben-Hur. Wallace was a lawyer, a Union general in the Civil War, governor of the New Mexico territory, author, diplomat, painter and so much more. There

is a museum in his name in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where I used to sit for hours, simply looking around in awe at the accomplishments of a guy who must not have slept.

I wanted to be like Lew, without all that work, and a whole lot more sleep. I was resigned to the fact there would never be another Lew Wallace.

Then I met Lorraine Robertson.

Her energy for everything becomes unexplainable when you consider she suffered a severe spinal disorder when she was 69.

She had owned a family medical practice in Rockaway, New Jersey when she was told by her physician she could either have surgery, which he didn’t recommend, or she could go home and stay there until her condition improved.

Nine months passed before Robertson felt well enough to have spinal surgery. Her medical practice had suffered due to her absence, so she thought it would be the right time to move to Florida.

Her husband, knowing her thirst for activity, suggested painting lessons and bought her paint and brushes. She then connected with the quiet instructor, and it was off to the painting races.

Meanwhile, Robertson found herself missing her patients at her now closed practice, many whom she had for 20 years or more. Although she couldn’t connect with them in the real world, she started jotting down notes about them, and that gave her a one-way connection to the past. She found the notes to be fascinating, and thought about putting them all together in a book, but her husband became ill and died.

A few years later, she began jotting down notes about her practice again, and her now boyfriend Alan Balfour began reading them. He was fascinated by the stories and suggested she put them into book form.

Inspired, she began writing every day after she ate breakfast.

“I never had to change a word,” she said. “His enthusiasm spurred me on and before I knew it, I had 26 chapters.”

The writing was in full force when the pandemic hit, and being more homebound, Robertson spent more time painting. It was 21 paintings she named her “Ain’t Love Grand” works of elderly love. Each one captured a couple, doing simple things that screamed absolute love.

When she finished writing “The Saga of a Holistic Physician,” she added those paintings to the back of

the book.

“Whether or not it was appropriate, I did it anyway.”

Like all her artistic work, Robertson hopes people pick up a copy of the book and enjoy the stories of the interactions with her patients, her paintings, or both. “The Saga of a Holistic Physician” can be found at online bookstores in both paperback and hard cover.

Considering her goal now is to get better at almost everything she does, the future includes some major questions. She admits her energy level has decreased, and that means she might have to cut back on some of her favorite activities.

She has yet to reach the point where she needs to choose, but that time is approaching.

To her, it doesn’t seem that long ago she was a teen growing up in Brooklyn, New York, one who found boys to be far more interesting than the piano.

One of her lessons to us all now, besides the obvious one about staying active for good health, is to reduce your expectations. That doesn’t mean ceasing to attempt to get better.

“I had a (piano) recital not long ago with kids, some of them who were 6 years old and better than me,” she said. “It takes a strong ego to know that and play in front of people. You just have to know that it can take a lot of energy to get to a lesson, but once you get there, the enjoyment comes.”

Maybe I will try it sometime.

ight dollars and 50 cents an acre along a busy interstate highway and adjacent to some of the most valuable inland property along the central Gulf Coast.

In this time of rapidly escalating real estate prices, that kind of deal is unheard of but not impossible if you’re planning to build a tourismgenerating, $130 million aquarium on 11.76 acres of Sarasota Countyowned land at Nathan Benderson Park.

On July 12, the Sarasota County Commission unanimously voted to convey the site near I-75 to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium for $100. There, the nonprofit marine research organization plans to build a new 110,000-square-foot aquarium, a project years in the making.

“This is the culmination of about four years’ worth of work to get to the point to where we can convey the property so that we can begin the construction of the aquarium,” Assistant Sarasota County Administrator Brad Johnson told commissioners. “In January of 2019, we executed the omnibus agreement between the county and Mote for the construction of the aquarium. A year later, a short-term lease was entered into and then that has been amended twice over the years to allow for the infrastructure improvements to be made at the site to get to the point that we’re at today.”

now clear to move forward on the project that will double the size of its four-decades-old aquarium on City Island between Lido Key and Longboat Key. Branded Mote Science Education Aquarium, Mote reached a $90 million fundraising milestone in October 2021. Meanwhile, site work in preparation for vertical construction is ongoing.

In 2018, the Sarasota County Commission committed $20 million in tourist tax funding toward construction.

Mote has projected Mote SEA will serve approximately 700,000 visitors in its first year, doubling the annual attendance of the current Mote Aquarium. In addition to providing conference and major events spaces, Mote projects nearly $28 million in annual economic impact beyond nearly $280 million of impact during construction.

“It will be a big eye-catcher on I-75,” said Commissioner Nancy Detert. “Once they build that aquarium, they should have millions of visitors because everybody’s going to want to stop there.”

While the Mote SEA will have the potential to capture the attention of some 45 million vehicles a year on the interstate, its current facility will gain capacity to expand marine research.

Mote SEA will be the latest in community investments that appeal to the area’s demographic shift toward younger families.

“There’s always been that challenge for families and for young people of what do you do in town,” Commissioner Christian Ziegler said.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium anticipates 700,000 visitors in the first year of operation of the Mote SEA.

The Sarasota Ballet auditioned more than 1,000 dancers for its Summer Intensive, and 170 made the final cut to come and learn in person.

hey’ve come from all across the country, bound by the same passion and bonded by the same experience.

They’ve put in the work to make themselves better dancers.

Now, the students of Sarasota Ballet’s Summer Intensive are primed for the best part of their pre-professional journey. They’re ready to show the world what they’ve learned in four InMotion appearances at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts from July 28-30.

Lindsay Fischer, the Sarasota Ballet’s assistant education director, has been training the dancers and setting brand new choreography upon them.

Class by class and skill by skill, he’s seen their confidence and ability grow immeasurably.

“For some of them, it may be the first time they’ve ever done choreography that they can’t go to YouTube and look at,” Fischer said. “This is

made for them as they’re standing there.

“They get that experience of, ‘OK we’re going to try to do this, this and the other thing,’ and then it doesn’t work out. And sometimes I say, ‘Actually, I think this is going to be fine. You need to treat that preparation differently and you need to coordinate that arm differently. You need to use the space differently and you’re going to find that it’s going to look good.’”

Fischer, who worked as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and Dutch National Ballet, has only been in Sarasota for about a year.

He’s had a long time to iron out his skills as a teacher; he ran the National Ballet of Canada’s Apprentice Program for 15 years.

Now, working with the Summer Intensive, Fischer is seeing dancers of a wide range in ages and ability.

The youngest dancers in the program are 12 years old, and they’re early in their development.

But the older dancers in the Summer Intensive might be as old as 21, and Fischer said by that point they’ve had serious training at highend schools for seven or eight years.

Those latter students — the ones nearing their professional career — will be working on brand new choreography set to music from Verdi’s “Macbeth” at the InMotion performances. Fischer said they’ve gotten it the old-fashioned way, through

hard work and sweat.

“The group I’m working with is very accomplished,” he said. “Anything I would set on a professional dancer, I would probably set on these dancers. Maybe for some it will take a little bit longer to learn.

“It might be fuzzy for longer. They may think they’ve got it, but instead of being right 10 times out of 10, it’s only right six times out of 10. In the end, it only has to be right once.”

The most interesting part, though, is where the dancers came from and how they got to Sarasota.

Christopher Hird, Sarasota Ballet’s education director, said more than 1,000 students from ballet schools all over America were evaluated for the Summer Intensive.

The final group of dancers numbers about 170, but not all of them came for the entire five-week program. Hird said the audition process lasted from January to March. During that time, every weekend the group either traveled to do an audition in person or did them via Zoom.

“I’m just thrilled that we’ve got this interest in Sarasota Ballet,” he said. “The numbers reflect that they want to come and train with us, which I think speaks a lot to the quality of the program. And the fact SEE INMOTION, PAGE 14A

that we have great faculty like Lindsay that people choose to come and work with.”

Surprised that some of the auditions were held over Zoom?

Don’t be. It’s the future.

Fisher said that phenomenon didn’t really exist until recently, but post-COVID, schools around the country are understanding how they can use technology to democratize their field of dancers.

“It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing. Like way, way better,” Fisher said. “I used to work in career counseling and placement. You would send videos and you would

send CDs and people would look at them and say, ‘Yeah, but I’ve got to see them in person.’ Now, we’ve realized that when you know how to use the technology properly, you can learn as much as you need to know about somebody over Zoom. …It’s not about having the privilege to jump on an airplane and go audition.

You can go to your local studio, you can stand in front of a Zoom camera and you have as much chance as somebody traveling in a limo.”

TRAINING METHODS

Once they arrive, the students at the Summer Intensive are separated into four age groups, and within those age groups, they’re ordered by skill so they can get trained at the proper level.

Sarasota Ballet has about seven full-time instructors working every

day with the trainees, and it has several others who can work twice a week or specialize in certain skillsets. The students are working six days a week, and it can be a long and grueling endeavor.

“Every day, the students get a full technique class of an hour and 45 minutes,” Fischer said. “Every day, they get either pointe or variations.

Every day, they get repertory. Then the fourth class, they’ll either get some other style of dance or they’ll get a conditioning class specifically for ballet. It’s not just going to the gym and lifting weights.

“We teach the anatomy of ballet; what joint or set of muscles are actually making that shape or that movement possible? Then you strengthen that, and that’s definitely something you don’t get at a lot of schools.”

old hat for the top level students.

But for some of the youngsters, they’re just beginning to learn their dreams will come with a physical cost. That part — working with dancers of different skills and age groups — is fun for Fischer, because it forces him to re-evaluate his methods of getting through to people.

“Some dancers throughout their lives are insatiably curious and want to know everything about what you’re thinking and why you’re doing it,” he said. “Other dancers prefer a more distanced approach.

They just want to be told what to do.

“Then there’s some dancers — I was one of them — who are very, very authority averse. And they learn very differently. When I get dancers like that in the room, I think, ‘Oh, this is going to be fun.’ I hear things and see things that I had not imagined.

These people are not listening to my drummer; they are listening to their own drummer and they are rocking to the rhythm they hear. And that is fascinating.”

Dancers grasp an understanding at a different point in their development, and Fischer said they aren’t necessarily curious about their instructors’ backgrounds.

At this point, they’re locked in on learning, and they’re focused on being the best dancers they can be.

“I don’t think it makes a big difference to them what your background is or where you come from or who you know,” Fischer said. “The important thing about teaching is to realize it does not matter what you know, who you know or how you know it.

“It matters whether you are able to help somebody else understand.

Teaching a skill is not a random accretion of experience. Lots of people have extraordinary experience. But they can’t teach.”

udrey Cefaly’s “Maytag Virgin” is a romantic comedy waiting to happen.

Set in small town Alabama, it shines a light on Jack (Blake Price) and Lizzy (Rachel Moulton), two recently widowed schoolteachers.

These 30-something singles wind up as neighbors, living in two shotgun shacks.

They meet cute in their backyards. Lizzy is hanging her wash on the clothesline while Jack’s putting his clothes in a shiny new Maytag dryer on the porch. Sparks fly, but they don’t kindle a romantic fire.

Will they or won’t they get together?

That unresolved question drives the play like a dryer spinning on “Heavy Duty: Extra Heat.”

Jack and Lizzy seem made for each other. They’ve both lost their spouses. They both need someone to love.

What’s the problem?

Ultimately, it’s really Lizzy’s problem. Jack’s ready to rock from the get-go. But Lizzy can’t go and won’t say why.

Lizzy’s unspoken secret is holding her back. Before love can grow, Jack has to find the key to unlock her heart. That’s what Cefaly’s twoact play is all about.

Lizzy’s secret emerges over the course of the play. But slowly, like an old-time Polaroid photograph developing before your eyes.

At first, it’s just a funny contrast of personalities.

Price’s Jack is likeable, downto-earth and straightforward. No hidden agendas, no secrets.

Moulton’s Lizzy, on the other hand, is a Rubik’s Cube of neuroses.

She’s bright, bubbly and wound too tight. She’s clearly drawn to Jack.

But her conversation keeps veering off in random vectors.

It’ll all be going great, then something will set her off. Jack’s Maytag.

Or his statue of the Virgin Mary.

Or whatever.

Something will push Lizzy’s crazy button, and that will be all she wrote.

Moulton is great as the ultimate wacky neighbor, and (in keeping with the script) she lets you know there’s far more to her than the sitcom stereotype.

Jack is equally great as (essentially) his neighbor’s laconic straightman. There’s more to him, too.

Director Kate Alexander lovingly gives these compelling characters room to breathe.

She lets you get to know them.

And you want to!

In a way, you’re eavesdropping on Jack and Kate throughout the play.

Alexander’s staging and timing entices you to fall in love with them.

Kudos also to the imaginative talents who give shape, form and sound to this little corner of sweet home Alabama.

Pedro L. Guevara’s hyper-realistic Southern-fried set design, Mari Taylor Floyd’s costumes, Andrew Gray’s lighting design and Thom Korp’s sound design bring Lizzy and Jack’s microcosmic world to life.

“Maytag Virgin” has a lot to like.

Cefaly’s highly original play goes from strength to strength.

My only two quibbles?

Sometimes there’s too much to like. At other times, the play’s strength can be its weakness.

Cefaly’s dialogue is brilliant, but

rarely on the nose. Her characters occasionally spill their guts, get to the point and speak the plain truth.

Most of the time, their speech loops around like real-life conversations. That creates a naturalistic feel — and a long running time.

If you ask me, I’d cut about halfan-hour of clever digressions. But nobody asked.

The playwright’s indirectness is her strength. Maybe it’s my OCD talking, but sometimes I like a little focus. Two examples … n There’s no line in the play defining what “Maytag Virgin” means. n Jack is supposedly a physics teacher. You wouldn’t guess that by listening to him.

“The dryer works through a combination of centrifugal force and heat convection. There’s nothing Satanic about it.”

Nope.

“Our relationship is the romantic equivalent of Schrodinger’s Cat. It’s neither here nor there.”

Nope again.

Quibbles aside, I loved Cefaly’s play. It’s smart, sweet, warm, loving and funny.

Most importantly the two characters feel real.

Speaking of which, let’s return to our two key character questions …

Will Jack and Lizzy get together?

You can probably guess, so let’s skip that one.

Next question …

What’s Lizzy’s problem?

The playwright doesn’t cheat you of an answer.

I won’t spoil the revelation.

But her answer, like the play itself, feels honest, human and real.

t 10 years old, Lakewood Ranch’s Emilia Costello already dreams of owning a restaurant.

During The Out-of-Door Academy’s Crazy Cooks Camp held July 11-15, she had an opportunity to get a taste of what it would be like.

“It’s always been my dream to cook for people,” Costello said.

Costello, who would love to appear on “Top Chef Jr.,” someday, then went back to making smoothies, pretzels and pumpkin spice waffles with the other campers.

One of those campers was 9-year-old Benjamin Rodriguez, who was hoping to make a pretzel that could rival the one he had during a just-completed family trip to Philadelphia. His pretzel was made in the form of an infinity sign.

“I love pretzels, and it’s really fun to shape the dough,” he said.

Kristi Mezick, the owner Pure Imagination Studio, led the camp.

Julia Oliveira, 10, Joshua Rodriguez, 6, Riley Patterson, 9, and Alessia Enciso, 6, have fun kneading their dough. They had to add more flour so the dough wouldn’t stick to their hands as much.

While some campers made traditional pretzels, others opted to make pretzel bites.

New location for Pinnacle Chiropractic Pediatric chiropractic care specialist opens new office on Cooper Creek Boulevard.

yakka City’s Savannah Hallum made it clear she felt like more than a patient at Pinnacle Chiropractic, which held its grand opening ceremony July 16 at 7984 Cooper Creek Blvd., Suite 104, University Park.

Hallum had been a patient at Pinnacle’s previous office down the street at 8450 Cooper Creek Blvd.

She went to Pinnacle for help during her pregnancy.

“They sat with me on the couch, took care of me, and gave me a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on whenever I was here,” she said.

It was the kind of thing Pinnacle Chiropractic owner Matt Morris loves to hear.

“Our office really is like a family, and we are very close-knit,” Morris said.

As Morris spoke it was apparent Pinnacle Chiropractic is a big family. Dozens of children were having a grand time in the special play areas.

Everything is bigger at the new, 2,400-square-foot office.

Seventy-five percent of Pinnacle’s clients are children as the office specializes in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic care. Pinnacle sees about 100 children a day.

He said the practice serves as an alternative to drugs or surgery and aims to serve clients “in the most natural way possible.”

An important part of the new office’s design was the play area that features toys, books and cushions.

opening seemed to agree as the children went from game to game.

Sarasota 13-year-old Izaak Miller said the clinic helped resolve issues including his ADHD and anxiety.

“They were another family to me,” he said. “They were all very kind to me.”

Italian Ice hot in Lakewood Ranch NEW BUSINESS

S

teve Mountcastle, the co-owner of Jeremiah’s Italian Ice of Bradenton, figured it was time to deliver to Lakewood Ranch.

No, not by driving his desserts there, but by opening another Jeremiah’s Italian Ice franchise.

Mountcastle said he was getting several Lakewood Ranch residents who made the drive to visit his Jeremiah’s franchise at 2525 Manatee Ave W. in Bradenton since he opened that one with his son and co-owner, Jake Lopez, in April 2021.

Like all Jeremiah’s locations, which are located in 11 states, the upcoming Lakewood Ranch location will offer three signature items — Italian ice in over 40 flavors, soft-serve ice cream in three flavors — vanilla, chocolate, and vanilla and chocolate swirl — and finally what Mountcastle said is the most popular item, the Jeremiah’s Gelati, which features alternating layers of Italian ice and ice cream in one cup.

“We have a lot of big flavors,” Mountcastle said.

Those flavors will be delivered by Mountcastle, Lopez, and Lopez’s wife, Lauren Lopez, in Lakewood Ranch, which will be the 65th Jeremiah’s Italian Ice franchise in Florida.

Jake Lopez said the treats offered at Jeremiah’s are thicker, smoother, and creamier than traditional Italian ice.

“Our ice is able to play ball with actual ice cream,” Jake Lopez said. “It really blows people’s minds, thinking that their cookies and cream is water-based at the same time it is cream-based — that they’re having something that is truly, by definition, Italian ice, even though it will melt in your mouth. It is a different experience than you would normally get anywhere else.”

During middle school and high school, Jake Lopez frequently visited a Jeremiah’s in Winter Springs, Florida, where the family used to live.

“It was the go-to place,” Jake Lopez said.

He said he recalled that an area manager for Jeremiah’s would stop at his high school on Wednesdays, either selling or giving away products.

“I thought it was so cool,” he said.

“I was touched by their involvement in the community, and by the ability to put a face to the name. I wanted to use this as a platform to do the same for other community members.”

Lopez said the appeal of Jeremiah’s is that it aims for authenticity in its products, eliminating many preservatives and chemical ingredients. He also said that menus are available for those who follow vegan, gluten-free, or dairy-free diets, and that some flavors, including the pina colada and coconut, are highly similar to ice cream in texture.

t starts with comfort.

That, Reagan Gross said, is the most important thing an athletic trainer can provide for an athlete.

That includes the physical comfort of tending to the athlete’s injuries as well as the mental comfort of trusting the trainer and believing everything will go OK. Gross, who graduated from Lakewood Ranch High in May, would know. A youth soccer player growing up, Gross suffered a handful of ankle injuries. Sometimes the trainer that attended to her would be knowledgable and Gross would know she was in good hands. Other times, like when she was at a travel tournament with her club team, Braden River Soccer Club, she would see trainers who weren’t so sharp. It was not a good situation.

Gross said she did not realize those experiences were bad until she reached high school. She suffered an ankle injury as a sophomore and was treated by the Mustangs’ head athletic trainer, Sydney Suppa.

“She explained exactly what she was doing and why she was doing it,” Gross said of Suppa. “It made me feel secure.”

Gross had a friend, Juanita Diaz, in the school’s extracurricular athletic training program. The student assistants in the program would help the school’s regular training staff at events.

After seeing that hands-on experience, Gross decided to apply to the program in March of her sophomore year.

She was accepted and decided to quit soccer to focus on the training program. She wanted to make a difference by giving comfort to athletes at their most vulnerable moments.

Gross now considers it one of the best decisions she has made.

She also considers Suppa to be one of the most important people in her life. On July 9, Gross received the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida Pre-Professional Student of the Year Award at the ATAF’s annual symposium in Orlando. Suppa was in attendance.

“She (Gross) is everything you want in an AT student,” Suppa said.

“She is hard-working and dedicated, but she is also an amazing person.

She is genuine. She didn’t shy away from anything.”

one — Suppa — and then go through an application process. She had to create an athletic training resume and write a 500-word essay on why she deserved to be selected. Gross’ background likely stood out from the pack.

In addition to playing soccer, Gross grew up in a rodeo family. Her father, Dallas Gross Jr., competed in rodeo and traveled the world for competitions. Reagan Gross even competed in roping events herself, though just for fun. Gross said her long-term goal is to become an athletic trainer for rodeo, though if that does not work out, she is also open to working in a more traditional sport, or even following Suppa’s path and working for a local high school, passing on her passion to others.

It is a passion developed over time. Gross said in her two years in the program she has learned physical skills, like how to properly wrap a shin splint and how to put pressure on it to alleviate pain. She has learned how to talk to parents about their child’s injuries.

Gross said she plans on attending the State College of Florida’s Manatee-Sarasota campus, then getting her master’s degree from the University of South Florida.

“Sydney changed my whole high school experience,” Gross said.

“Sydney has encouraged me and told me I could do this. I would not be where I am without her.”

Lakewood Ranch High Head Atheltic Trainer Sydney Suppa recruits 10 students to be part of her team. She looks for certain qualities in students during the application process that will help them succeed in the program.

“Applicants have to be first aid and CPR certified,” Suppa said. “I’d like for them to have taken the athletic injuries class offered on campus. But it’s a points system. They get points for all the extracurrciulars they do, the personal statement they have to write, the letters of recommendation they provide, how well-spoken they are in our phone interview and the passion they have for the medical field. It’s tough because there are a lot of qualified applicants. I’m looking for people who are the most well-rounded.”

Suppa said the team’s most extensive duties come during football season, when each member of the team must attend three practices and the team’s game each Friday night, including away games.

Suppa also has at least one member of the team at each sport’s home games during the winter and spring seasons.

They focus mainly on hydration and preparing ice packs.

They can also do everything under their first aid and CPR certifications. Other than that, the team watches Suppa and team doctor Paul Lento to see how they diagnose and treat injured athletes.

A swim among the stars F

elipe Baffico Balharry had a month to prepare for the biggest swims of his life.

Baffico Balharry, a rising senior at The Out-of-Door Academy whose family moved to Lakewood Ranch from Chile when he was 10, received a phone call from Chile’s national team swim coaches.

They told him they had two open spots on the team’s roster for the 2022 FINA World Championships, held June 18-July 3 in Budapest, Hungary.

Baffico Balharry accepted, of course. This was a chance to swim against the best athletes on Earth.

Who would turn down such an opportunity, even with little time to prepare?

There was one problem, though.

Baffico Balharry was already planning on representing Chile in the FINA World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru, Aug. 30-Sept. 4.

He had known about those junior championships for a long time and had shaped his summer training schedule around it. The World Championships was a swerve in those plans.

It was a good swerve, but also one that had to come with lower expectations. He would simply do the best he could.

Oh, and he also was going to have fun.

That became easy once he dove into the Budapest pool for the first time and saw 2020 U.S. Olympians Kieran Smith and Nic Fink swimming next to him.

It was just a tad different than swimming for ODA or his club team, the Sarasota Sharks.

“I was definitely nervous,” Baffico Balharry said. “There are so many people there. Thinking about the 200 meter butterfly, in particular, gave me butterflies — no pun intended. It’s my best event and it is something you have to plan for.

before, thinking about that swim, that was stressful.”

Once Baffico Balharry arrived to the call room, a funny thing happened. His nerves disappeared. He realized the only thing he could do was compete. Stepping onto the pool deck, Baffico Balharry allowed himself the briefest of glances around Budapest’s Duna Arena. He took in the moment and enjoyed it.

Then he reminded himself not to go too fast out of the blocks. It was self advice he promptly forgot as soon as he hit the water.

It happens to the best of us. We enter something with a plan and promptly throw it out. In Baffico Balharry’s case, it still worked out OK. He set a new personal record in the 200 meter butterfly, finishing in 2:01.99, good for 34th place. When you’re going against elite swimmers as a high schooler, 34th is pretty dang good. Baffico Balharry also finished 48th in the 100 meter butterfly (55.32 seconds).

“I was talking with (Sarasota Sharks) Coach Brent Arckey, and he told me that for me to set a new PR

on a big stage like that, that was a nice result,” Baffico Balharry said.

“That made me feel good about the whole thing. I’m happy with how I performed considering I only knew about it a month beforehand.”

Baffico Balharry said he had three days on his own once he arrived in Budapest, but in order to rest his body, he didn’t explore the city much.

He did have one day after his events to see the city, though, and elected to take a boat tour with a few friends that hit all the city’s landmarks. It wasn’t as much time as he would have liked, he said, but Budapest looked beautiful all the same.

Budapest was just one part of a whirlwind nine months for Baffico Balharry, who competed in his first international event, the South American Youth Championships, in November 2021 in Lima, Peru, and took gold in the 200 meter butterfly (2:02.09).

fico Balharry said he did not think he would be back in Lima so soon, but believes the familiarity with the venue and the area will help him perform his best and shake off some nerves. It will also help that he can finally complete his training plan. He’s still going full-speed for now, with the 2022 USA Futures Swimming Championships set for July 27-30 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Baffico Balharry said he would like to make the finals in the 200 meter butterfly at World Juniors, which will likely require a sub-2:00 time. Baffico Balharry will have to shave at least two seconds off his personal record for that to happen.

He will swim for the Sharks and for ODA in the fall. As far as other international opportunities, he is certainly open to them. But no matter what happens from here, he’s swam in the same pool as the world’s best and done well, and that’s something worthy of pride.

Seth Shamrock Seth Shamrock is a rising senior center/long snapper on the Lakewood Ranch High football team.

Shamrock is rated a four-star long snapper by Kohl’s Snapping.

When did you start playing football?

I first started playing football in 2013 when I was 9 years old. I have always been on the offensive line, even though I am on the smaller side for a lineman. (Shamrock is 5-foot-11, 210 pounds according to his Kohl’s Snapping profile.) I was not the fastest kid, so that is where they put me.

I started long snapping right before I got to high school because it was an opportunity to advance my game.

What is the appeal to you?

My favorite thing about football is coming together with my teammates and performing on the field with them. We have become a real brotherhood over the years.

What is your best skill?

My best skill is long-snapping, but other than that, I’m good at helping my other offensive linemen understand their assignments and get ready for each play. I help them mentally stay in the game.

The biggest key is keeping your breathing under control and keeping your head still so you can completely focus on where the ball is going.

I have been getting stronger and faster in order to improve my long snaps. I have also been traveling around to different team camps to keep learning and getting better and gain some interest from schools.
