Talk of the town Lecture series sparks intellectual interest in Lakewood Ranch.

akewood Ranch resident Ellen Sichel was ready to learn something new.

That’s just what she did Jan. 15 at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club when Peter McCallister of Ringling College of Art and Design told the audience Ben Franklin invented the bifocal lens at age 78.

McCallister said that as they age, they should keep a “flexible” outlook, continue to learn new things, stay socially active and do things like writing silly poems or taking art and dance classes.

Sichel, 64, took the advice to heart.

“It gave me food for thought,” Sichel said of the lecture. “I used to blog all the time. Creativity for me is sort of like spiritual food.”

Sichel and nearly 100 other residents of Lakewood Ranch and neighboring communities attended LWR Talks, the first in a four-part series of lectures. The program is being offered through a partnership between the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Ringling College, Lakewood Ranch, Lakewood Ranch Community Activities and the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Overstreet said OLLI has offered limited programming in Lakewood Ranch, but never felt like it truly understood the community’s wants and needs.

Wing not set for takeoff School district officials want more time to evaluate enrollment patterns.

fter being approved in 2017, a new wing at Lakewood Ranch High School to combat overcrowding has been delayed, at least temporarily.

The School District of Manatee County had planned to start construction on a new classroom addition during the 2020-2021 school year, but those plans have been delayed until the 2021-2022 school year by changes the Manatee County School Board made last April to proposed attendance zones.

Some East County communities north of State Road 64 but south of the Manatee River originally had been zoned to attend the new North River High School in Parrish. After complaints by parents who wanted their children to remain in the Lakewood Ranch High system, board members voted to carve out the GreyHawk Landing, Mill Creek and Country Creek communities from North River’s zone and to keep those neighborhoods zoned for Lakewood Ranch High.

The school board originally had planned to take 355 students out of Lakewood Ranch High’s zone and put them into North River’s zone. The rezone meant 162 of them would stay at Lakewood Ranch High.

That created problems because it meant Lakewood Ranch High’s portables still would be in use and couldn’t be moved away so the new wing could be constructed. ​Lakewood Ranch’s enrollment after the last school year was 2,396 compared to its capacity of 1,799. Lakewood Ranch High currently has 19 portables in its southwest corner and another four used for classrooms in the northwest corner.

District officials are confident they will find a way to expand Lakewood Ranch High.

NUMBERS GAME In April 2018 when the School District of Manatee County came up with plans for new attendance zones for Braden River, Lakewood Ranch and Palmetto High to accommodate the new North River High School in Parrish, attendance at Lakewood Ranch High School was 2,396 students. The district then examined a map of Parrish residents who would be automatically zoned for the new North River High School and added a rezoning plan that would shift another 355 East County students to North River. After complaints from East County neighborhoods (to the south of the Manatee River) who wanted to remain in Lakewood Ranch High’s zone, a plan was revised in April 2018 that only shifted 193 of those 355 students. *Figures provided by School District of Manatee County’s Office of Student Enrollment.

“We’ve delayed the wing one year,” said Doug Wagner, the district’s interim superintendent of business services and operations, who said everything will proceed if the enrollment landscape doesn’t have any drastic changes.

School board member Scott Hopes said any problems caused by the current location of the portables can be overcome.

“In the world of construction and innovation, the mere fact of where the portables are located is not going to deter us from expanding Lakewood Ranch High School, if that’s what we need to do,” Hopes said.

Officials said the delay will give the district more time to evaluate how school choice will affect enrollment at the new high school, which will have an advanced automotive program and health profession classes that may attract students. The district believes those programs will attract students from Lakewood Ranch and others throughout the county.

School Choice allows parents to send their child to the school of their choice, rather than the school to which their child is zoned. Applications for School Choice are considered based on school capacity, the student’s

proximity to the choice school, and on other race-neutral factors.

“It’s going to be two years before we fully have attendance at the new high school,” Hopes said.

“With that, there may be future redistricting of all schools. I have been an advocate of changing the attendance zone not just of three schools (Palmetto, Braden River and Lakewood Ranch highs), but of all our schools. We are going to continue to create schools of choice.”

School board members Charlie Kennedy, Dave Miner and Gina Messenger said they believe the wing is needed and believe the district will find a way to construct the addition.

Miner said it is not a matter of whether the wing will be built, but how big.

“To some extent, we’re going to have a wing there,” Miner said.

“How many portables are going to be removed? We won’t know until about April.”

Kennedy said when he talks with educators at Lakewood Ranch High School, they are not worried Lakewood Ranch will still have portables next year. They tell him reducing the student population by nearly 200 students will make them feel like they have “elbow room.”

“The mood on campus for those who work there is one of relief,” Kennedy said. “For the people who work there, this is still a good development (the opening of North River High). The overcrowding situation is not good, but there is some relief on the way.”

Hopes said he believes other changes in the educational landscape could impact Lakewood Ranch’s future, in terms of enrollment and facility needs, over the next two to three years. One of those changes could be a highschool level charter school in the greater Lakewood Ranch area. He said said he has been contacted by two charter schools about starting programs in the Lakewood Ranch area with one proposing a kindergarten-through-12thgrade campus between Parrish and Lakewood Ranch, and another for a high school program in Lakewood Ranch proper.

Charter schools are public schools that operate under a performance contract, or a “charter” which frees them from many regulations created for traditional public schools.

“If something like that occurs, we may not need to expand Lakewood Ranch High,” Hopes said.

Marvin said 35 feet is the maximum height allowed in residential areas when there is no specific site plan, but higher heights are allowed with board approval.

Manatee County Planning Commission members supported the changes during their Jan. 17 meeting, but Manatee County commissioners will make the final decision Feb. 7.

Florida-based apartment developer hopes to add more luxury apartments to the Lakewood Ranch rental market.

Picerne Development, of Altamonte Springs, hopes to build Oasis at Lakewood Ranch, a 254unit luxury apartment complex at the southeast corner of Lorraine Road and 59th Avenue East. The site is part of the existing Lorraine Corners project and is immediately north of a future Publix shopping center at the corner of Lorraine and State Road 70.

Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch is requesting changes to its Lorraine Corners general development plan that would increase the number of allowed apartment units from 220 to 254, reduce the number of required parking spaces from 2.1 per unit to 1.8, and increase maximum building height from 35 feet to 50 feet.

The changes are requested to accommodate development of multifamily housing, said Darenda Marvin, representative for applicant Schroeder-Manatee Ranch. “(In 2016) SMR wanted to bring

Shallcross said the request for parking reductions is based on experience at its other apartment projects. Oasis at Lakewood Ranch also will have a sidewalk connection to the future Publix shopping center, immediately south, where there will be employment opportunities.

If the development changes are approved in February, Shallcross said it will take about three months to finalize construction plans.

“We hope to be under construction in late April,” he said, noting the first building likely would open one year later.

Shallcross said Picerne expects many of its renters to be people looking for temporary housing as they construct new homes in Lakewood Ranch.

The University Corners project runs roughly from State Road 70 north to 59th Avenue East, east of Lorraine Road and west of Post Boulevard. On it, Big Jim Self Storage, Bayside Pet Resort and a Taco Bell restaurant have already been developed.

It was just another day for Rex Jensen, CEO and president of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, in the expansion of Lakewood Ranch.

Last fall, Jensen heard the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office would be interested in using the Lakewood National sales office at 14544 Arbor Green Trail, near the corner of State Road 70 and Lorraine Boulevard, as a substation.

He loved the idea, only there was a problem.

SMR had been leasing the land to Lakewood National builder Lennar, which had finished using the off-site sales office after building one on-site. Jensen had told Lennar to get rid of the four trailers that had been merged together to form the temporary sales office.

Lennar was complying, in a hurry.

When Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker came to check out the site as a Sheriff’s Office substation, he frantically called Jensen.

“He told me, ‘They are hauling away the walls to the dumpsters,’” Jensen said. “The interior was gutted and the flooring was gone.”

Jensen called Terry Kirschner, the land development manager for Lennar, and asked Kirschner to put the walls back.

“I looked around the building,” Kirschner said. “The demolition was about 40% done. I thought, ‘It’s going to be a little more than just putting some walls up.”

Lennar spent about $50,000 putting the building back together, but Kirschner said the builder was happy to oblige.

“On behalf of Lennar, I would like to thank the sheriff and SMR for inviting us into this project,” Kirschner said. “It is a small way we can give back to the community.”

After Lennar finished construction, SMR had to buy the building from the company so it could lease the land and the structure to the Sheriff’s Office.

In November, the Sheriff’s Office started moving into the site with 15 deputies and supervisors.

its temporary substation.

Sheriff Rick Wells said the substation was much needed in Lakewood Ranch due to its growth.

Lakewood Ranch was the nation’s second-best-selling masterplanned community in 2018 with 1,479 new home sales.

“It’s been our goal to have an important presence in this community,” Wells said. “And we will continue building. This is only the beginning. But we needed to get more resources out here. We don’t want people to have to drive 20 miles (to the main Sheriff’s Office building at 600 Highway 301 Blvd. W., Bradenton). Some people won’t make that drive to report things, and we need to know what is going on.”

Capt. Tony Williams will be in charge of the substation. He said the county’s SWAT team and canine command now will use the Lakewood Ranch substation as their headquarters.

“This is beautiful and needed,” Williams said. “It’s important because I think some people are old school, like me. They like to meet face-to-face when they are reporting something.”

Jensen said the location is a perfect fit for the Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a huge win for the community,” he said.

But, Wells and Jensen stressed the site is temporary. The Sheriff’s Office wants to build a permanent facility in Lakewood Ranch. While no location has been selected, Wells said county officials have discussed the possibility of building on land acquired in 2018 by the county adjacent to the Premier Sports Campus.

“I think it would be a great location,” Wells said.

any in the crowd of 400 at Manatee Technical College were busy scribbling notes as the guest speaker flowed through his presentation Jan. 17 during the 2019 Economic Forecast Breakfast that was presented by the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp.

For the 20th consecutive year at the event, economist Hank Fishkind was trying to give area business leaders a head start in navigating any economic turbulence.

It was obvious, in this room, Fishkind’s views carried weight.

Those who do business in the Lakewood Ranch area, and specifically those who do their business in real estate, probably left the event feeling a bit more chipper than most.

“The master-planned communities remain highly attractive,” Fishkind said. “They outperform the marketplace. Clearly, Lakewood Ranch will be less affected than other places.”

Although Lakewood Ranch has new projects such as Waterside and Toll Brothers’ The Isles speeding forward, Fishkind said those builders shouldn’t have much concern.

“Lakewood Ranch is more resilient because it promises a better life,” Fishkind said.

He presented chart after chart at the event displaying how he

came to his conclusions. Many dealt with gross domestic product, retail sales, jobless claims and value of the dollar. He talked about political policy decisions, retail space, stock market volatility, 10-year bond rates and climate change.

But then he got to Florida’s percentatage of population increase, and how that percentage has decreased slightly two consecutive years. The trend in Lakewood Ranch, and in Manatee County to

a lesser extent, remained steady.

In 2015, Manatee County’s population increased by 12,490 followed by a 12,641 increase in 2016. It was slightly down in 2017 at 11,040 and in 2018 at 10,700.

Fishkind said he has tracked a slump in domestic migration, noting people simply are moving about half as often as they have in the past. “Mobility in the U.S. in the last 10 years has dropped dramatically,” he said.

For Florida, that could mean fewer people leaving their homes in other states to come to Florida.

As far as the escalating values of homes Lakewood Ranch residents have seen over the last two to three years, Fishkind said not to count on that continuing.

“We’ve already seen the slowing rate of those prices,” he said.

With all the residential and business growth throughout the

county, Fishkind said the county as a whole remains insulated from a slump, although to a lesser extent than Lakewood Ranch.

Sharon Hillstrom, the president and CEO of the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp., said that makes sense because Manatee County “has a great product to see.”

Mark Moschella, the market president at Hancock Bank, told the crowd he is bullish even though some are predicting a slowdown.

“Our investment (in Manatee County) can go a lot further when we all do it together,” he told the local business leaders. “I see this market with a tremendous amount of potential.”

Fishkind worked to give the business leaders tools to take advantage of that potential.

Of course, not every forecast is entirely accurate. SchroederManatee Ranch CEO and President Rex Jensen said Fishkind once told him he was crazy for developing Lakewood Ranch a quarter of a century ago.

“That was one of my worst forecasts ever,” Fishkind said with a laugh.

Jensen never held it against him.

He said the two of them have been the best of friends ever since.

Fishkind said he, in turn, was impressed with Jensen, who forged ahead despite the odds, succeeding despite market indicators.

“SRM was willing to bear the risk and invest,” Fishkind said.

akewood Ranch’s Ann Sledz knows she puts a personal stamp on each blanket she crochets.

She also knows when she is finished with each project that blanket is going out the door no matter how much she loves it.

Sledz is one of about 15 members of the Blankets 4 Babies committee of the Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club. Since spring 2017 the group has donated about 150 blankets to charitable organizations such as the Children’s Guardian Fund and Solve Maternity Homes.

“Some projects, yes, you become a little more attached to,” said Sledz, who started crocheting as a hobby about 16 years ago when she was about to become a grandmother. “You are giving a part of yourself to these little babies. I like doing projects where I can see a result, and babies are my weak point.”

On Jan. 8, the committee donated another 24 handmade quilts and crocheted blankets to the Children’s Guardian Fund, which responds to the needs of children who have been removed from abusive and neglectful homes.

Those children often are forced to move on short notice without their personal belongings.

Peggy Kerwin, executive director of Solve Maternity Home, a Christ-centered maternity home for at-risk pregnant women and their babies, said the babies and mothers they serve don’t typically have mothers, grandmothers or aunts who prepare and pass down sentimental tokens of love such as blankets.

She said Blankets 4 Babies serves that important need.

“I knew there was a need for this,” said Diane Laybourn, committee chair and founder. “These kids are never going to have the life most of us have. They are behind the eight ball from the start.

“I remember I always had a blanket I carried around.”

Eileen Buzzard, who joined the committee even though she has yet to finish a blanket, said Blankets 4 Babies shows that the 336-member Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club can make an important contribution to the community.

“Twice a year, we have a new member brunch,” Buzzard said.

“At the brunch (spring 2017), Diane (Laybourn) was a new member. We go around and all the new members talk. Diane said she used to make blankets for babies at a hospital.”

The committee formed and the blanket production began.

“Twenty years ago, I used to crochet blankets for the homeless,” said Miriam Echevarria. “I hadn’t done it a long time, then I learned about this group. I love it because I am doing something to give to someone who needs it.

And I find this group of women to be very genuine, very polite and nice. Once a month we all bring our projects to Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. The competition is with ourselves, but we ask (the other members) what we can do to make it better.”

Pam Szabo started sewing when she was 14, but she let her hobby lapse over the years until she saw the new committee forming.

“I decided to pick up my hobby again,” she said. “I like working

with the fabric and picking out the designs. I know a baby would like something soothing. Now I seem to be turning out a quilt every week or two. Now I am addicted to quilting videos.”

Like Szabo, Linda Stone found the committee was a good chance for her to become more involved in her love of creating designs and patterns.

“Forty years ago, I sold children’s clothes,” she said. “It’s much more enjoyable to donate them.”

Stone thought about her statement a moment.

“Well, I did like selling them,” she said with a laugh.

“I do like giving them away, because I get to do another one,” she said.

The women said it costs about $40 to buy the materials for one blanket. A price simply can’t be placed on the hours of labor, but that’s OK because they enjoy it.

Buzzard is trying to enjoy the process just a little more.

“I am not a prolific producer of blankets,” she said with a smile.

“But I am bound and determined to make one blanket.”

The other members of the committee don’t mind if she never makes one.

They said Buzzard always brings a box of chocolates to their meetings.

Not so moderate to fair traffic I

felt like I was taking the Grumpy Old Man 101 course.

Maybe it was just me, pressures mounting from the working world, deciding to let it all spill over in my car, even if no one was there to listen.

Perhaps you’ve had a day like this ... no matter your age.

The day, last Saturday, started out well, with an interview with the Blankets 4 Babies committee from the Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club. How could that not make me smile? These ladies literally sit around for hours upon hours each day making blankets for a child they never will meet ... never will see.

Besides all that, they were funny, giggly, compassionate, and just pure fun.

Then I drove away.

The rest of the day promised to be just as enjoyable. My next assignment was taking photos at the Manatee County Fair. Racing pigs, cows, candy apples, jugglers. My job can be sweet.

I just needed to swing by my office on Lakewood Main Street, check some directions and head out. I pulled out to Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and headed north. For a minute. Then traffic came to a halt. I inched along.

Problems on Interstate 75 had forced drivers onto Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. It was Saturday, it was 11:45 a.m., and I had plenty of time to look for alligators and exotic birds along the side of the road. Man, I live in a beautiful place. Usually.

Since I didn’t have an appointment, I tried to relax. I could make the most of my time, thinking about story ideas for the paper. Hmmmm. I considered growth issues, and road changes, and school overcrowding. It wasn’t helping. I bopped myself on the side of the head. Be

gone bad thoughts. Think babies, baby giggles, baby blankets.

Twenty minutes later, I was approaching State Road 70. I couldn’t find out about the I-75 trouble, and I could see Lakewood Ranch Boulevard continued to be a mess. So I turned east on State Road 70 to White Eagle Boulevard, headed to State Road 64 and got back on track going north on Upper Manatee River Road. It was a proud moment.

I was back on my happy trail again and figured that would be the worst of it.

To my dismay, I headed into Palmetto and once again became locked in concrete. I was moving a car length a minute and figured I would get to the fair in April if nothing changed. Trucks around me were driving over the

median to make U-turns, but my car rides too low to make such a move. I figured, how bad could it be? I would wait.

I started working triple time on negative thoughts. That old Michael Douglas movie, “Falling Down” came to mind. He just blew everyone away after getting stuck in traffic.

This mindset was going south and building momentum. It was time to do something, anything, to get my mind off my troubles reaching the fair.

I flipped on the radio. That’s better. Queen was playing.

Freddy Mercury could lift my spirits. He could make me forget I couldn’t get to the fair.

“Can anybody find me ... some bunny to love?”

I pulled the car over and walked over to a deputy. I told him I was trying to get to the fairgrounds.

“You can’t get there now,” he said. “Today’s is the Martin Luther King Day Parade. Come back in two hours.”

Martin Luther King Jr. Parade was on MLK Day. My chest felt like an alien was inside trying to get out. I spit out the usual dumb remark. “Are you kidding me?”

Ah, no.

“We advertised,” he said. “It’s every year.”

There was no way he could be right about the fair being an impossible dream, so I spent another 30 minutes trying to find a secret passage through the neighborhoods. I finally gave up, and headed home to Lakewood Ranch. I arrived five minutes before 2. And I had to go back ... again.

I was stupid angry, not at anyone in particular. Why doesn’t Manatee County have a plan to get folks into the first Saturday afternoon of the county fair? It’s only been here 103 years.

Why couldn’t a parade route be located in a more accessible location? Or maybe be held in the morning, away from the fair’s opening time? Can’t brilliant minds coordinate?

Why wasn’t there a sign anywhere in the area, a few miles back, saying “Keep out if you aren’t going to the parade?”

I doubt all those cars pulling U-turns over the median knew.

Was it just me acing the Mr. Grumpy 101 course?

She’s still got drive Future Hall-of-Famer shares golfing tips at Waterlefe club.

s Jan Stephenson, the 1982 Ladies Professional Golf Association and 1983 U.S. Women’s Open champion, delighted the crowd Jan. 16 with a variety of golf tips at the Waterlefe Golf & River Club’s driving range, one thing remained undeniable.

Her reputation was built as something more than being one of the best golfers in the world.

Stephenson, now 67, continues to be known for embracing the sex-sells image of the LPGA Tour in the mid-1980s. A photo of Stephenson posing in a bathtub full of golf balls graced the Waterlefe clubhouse where those who came to the clinic tasted three of Stephenson’s wines.

Were those in attendance aware of Stephenson in the 1970s and 1980s?

“Oh boy, I sure was,” said Waterlefe’s Phil Serafino, who came to the clinic with his wife, Barbara. “I went to high school in the 1970s. This brings me back

to that time. She certainly raised some eyebrows.”

Stephenson’s beauty was marketed so hard some golf fans have forgotten what a force she was on the course. Born in Sydney, Australia, Stephenson was Rookie of the Year in 1974 when she joined the LPGA Tour. She won three major titles — the 1981 Peter Jackson Classic (the Canadian Open, which was a major at the time) was the other to go along with her LPGA and U.S. Open titles — and eventually won 16 LPGA titles.

She will be inducted June 10 into the World Golf Hall of Fame during the men’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, Calif.

“I didn’t think I would get into the Hall of Fame until I was dead,” Stephenson told the Waterlefe crowd with a laugh.

Serafino said he appreciates her being a sex symbol of the LPGA Tour, but he really came to the clinic to help his golf game.

“She has won so many championships, so I am hoping for any helpful tips she can give me,” he said.

Waterlefe’s Jim Burns agreed a lot of knowledge was on the table.

“She is more accomplished than most people realize,” he said.

delighting the crowd with an assortment of shots. She hit a drive more than 180 yards from her knees.

“She did a lovely job,” said Waterlefe’s John Stirk. “She is charming and talented, and she explained things well.”

After the clinic, Stephenson treated the group to three of the wines from her vineyards in Paso Robles, Calif., along with her own personal brand of rum.

The wine venture has come later in life for Stephenson, who would seem to have her hands full with her golf responsibilities along with her Crossroads Foundation, which serves disabled U.S. military veterans and

is a partner of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation. She purchased Tarpon Woods Golf Course in Palm Harbor and geared the course toward disabled veterans, changing sand traps, rough and greens for better access for the players.

After the clinic, she explained her fiance, Fry’s Food & Drug Stores President Jon Flora, had gotten her interested in wine and persuaded her to buy the 500acre vineyard. Flora died in 2013 of a heart attack, leaving Stephenson with a vineyard and little knowledge about wine.

“We had our cellar club during the senior tournaments, and we would sit around and talk,” Ste-

phenson said. “They always used to say I would be the one to bring a box wine.”

Instead, she took sommelier classes and learned everything she could about wine. She brought two Jan Stephenson cabernet sauvignon and a chardonnay to Waterlefe.

She seemed to genuinely enjoy herself. She certainly doesn’t have to do such small gatherings.

“I actually like the personal contact with people,” she said.

She also had a tip for the seniors who can’t hit the ball as far as they used to: “Move up on the tee box,” she said. “I do. I hate that I’ve lost so much power.”

The mango tree in Phyllis Weber’s backyard has never looked better.

That was after she used a chain saw to cut out a section of its trunk.

Though she thought the tree would die, she followed the directions she received in October from a Manatee County University of Florida Extension Services agent.

“The tree is absolutely glorious,” said Weber, a Lakewood Ranch resident and member of the Lakewood Ranch Garden Club. “It’s the best it’s ever looked, and it’s at a height we can pick the fruit.”

The advice Weber received while visiting the extension office is the same kind of wisdom members of the Lakewood Ranch Garden Club hope to share this month as the group offers the National Garden Clubs’ Gardening School.

The first two of four courses will be held Jan. 28-31 and the other two are April 1-4.

Instructors are agents at extension offices in Manatee and Sarasota counties. All teachers and materials have been approved by the National Garden Clubs, which created the program.

“There’s over 150 years of knowledge and direct experience,” said event organizer Sheryl Perkins, of the Lakewood Ranch Garden Club. “That’s a lot.”

Here in the Sarasota/ Bradenton area, there are numerous opportunities for the young athlete to participate in sports year round.

Too often, however, young athletes are playing only one sport all year long without the potential for rest or recovery.

The real estate team of the Luxury Living Group announced in January its move to Michael Saunders and Co. Luxury Living is made up of Realtors Stacy Haas, Gloria Bracciano and Greg Van Natter. They will operate out of Michael Saunders’ Lakewood Ranch office.

Last year, the group accounted for more than $63 million in sales volume.

that they can participate in free unstructured play with their peers. Parents and educators should provide opportunities for free play as well so that our young athletes can improve their motor development in general during the growing years which can reduce injury rates and encourage life-long activity free of injury.

Lake Club adds choices Lake Club has announced it is adding a new neighborhood, Genoa, which will feature Stock Signature Homes.

The homes will start in the $600,000s and will be offered on 65- and 84-foot homesites.

Genoa will feature eight models with three styles, British West Indies, Mediterranean and Florida Coastal.

In other Lake Club news, it was announced 26 of the original 68 home sites within Lake View Estates, which opened in 2018, have been sold. The Lake Club recorded 62 home and lot sales in 2018, exceeding $55 million dollars.

In fact, young athletes who play or perform a single sport greater than eight months out of the year are at a significantly increased risk of experiencing an injury compared to the other youths who participate in different sports. In a recent sports medicine article, youth athletes who focus on a specific specialization of sport program are twice as likely to get injured compared to their friends who participated in self-directed unstructured free play.

he woman’s face, fractured and dripping rainbow-colored liquid, rests on a background that is half checkerboard and half American flag.

Pink ribbons spin from her cheeks, and her chin is swaddled by a scarf-like streak of purple.

An oval crowns her forehead.

From her glassy eyes shine bursts of green and blue.

Lakewood Ranch High senior Rheana White is not sure what inspired this particular piece of art, nameless like the rest of her works, but it is her favorite. It was an in-the-moment creation.

When White paints, she is free of planning, and free of stress.

Her paintbrush seems to move where it wants.

She enjoys painting in her spare time, which she has less of these days. She is the captain, and a defender, for the Mustangs girls soccer team.

White’s athletic style is the opposite of her artistic style.

She paints in gentle strokes, but plays with fire and physicality on Lakewood Ranch’s back line.

Her favorite part of her defensive duties is making tackles.

“I think being a defender coincides with my personality,” White said. “I am a protective person. I am looking out for everyone else.

I do not take the ball up the field much. I do my job and pass it to my teammates.”

White has been involved in both

passions since she was 4. While her soccer career started with Braden River Soccer Club, her art career started with doodles, the kinds all kids draw. White kept drawing them until she transferred her talent to canvas.

There was no sudden breakthrough, she said. She just loved to create, so she did. Once word of White’s skills got around, the community took notice. She sold a few pieces to individuals, landed a commission for a painting for Sarasota’s Cafe Barbosso in 2016 and creates designs for a local handbag company BSWANKY. “I mainly paint to de-stress,” White said. “I will get a feeling, and I cannot get it out until I paint it.”

As soon as White finishes a painting, she’s done with it. She does not hang her works in her room, or around the house. She keeps them in a vacant room.

White hates staring at them because she does not see the beauty in them. She instead sees things she could have done differently.

She is a perfectionist, and this, of all things, is what connects her passions.

Mustangs coach Delaney Riggins said White has dealt with back and knee problems throughout the season, but always participates in conditioning drills.

Riggins said she has to convince White to sit out the drills if she needs a break. Otherwise, White will push through, trying to be the best player she can be. White even volunteers as an assistant coach with Braden River Soccer Club’s U13 team to experience the game from a different perspective and pass on her knowledge to younger generations.

“She is our center back,” Riggins said. “She controls our defense. She is constantly talking to her teammates on the field and is not afraid to ask questions.”

White, whose steady play has helped the Mustangs to an 11-2 record as of Jan. 21, even scored a goal in her final regular-season home game, an 8-0 win Jan. 18 against Sebring High, with a header in the box.

Lakewood Ranch will count on White’s artful passes and gritty tackles as it begins postseason play.

Lakewood Ranch golfer gets another shot

L

akewood Ranch’s Seath Lauer has to leave work early to get to Sarasota’s Laurel Oak Country Club, the closest golf course to his office at Virtus Health, by 4 p.m.

He makes time for golf whenever he can. It’s important.

The 31-year-old Lauer is gearing up to play Feb. 14-17 in the Web.com Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic at Lakewood National Golf Club. He received a special exemption into the first-year event, and he is grateful he did because it affords him another chance to chase his dream.

Lauer was an acclaimed golfer in his youth, finishing in the Top 20 at the state tournament all three of his years at Lakewood Ranch High. Lauer’s family moved back to Indiana, where Lauer was born, for his senior season.

During high school, he was once ranked as high as sixth in national recruiting rankings for his class. He then attended Florida State, where he captained the golf team as a senior in 2009-2010 and helped the Seminoles finish third at the NCAA Championships.

But after college, Lauer said, he found himself without much of a plan.

He fundraised money for a shot at Q School — back when it was for the PGA Tour, not the Web.com Tour — and reached

the final stage, but that is when his game failed him, he said.

“I just did not play well,” Lauer said. “That is my one big ‘what if.’ Playing six rounds of golf back to back to back, it was just mentally draining.”

Lauer spent time traveling the country and playing Monday qualifiers for professional events, while also trying to raise enough money to keep playing events. In 2014, he took the year

off, working for an insurance company and not even touching a golf club for the first six months. Lauer said he thought if he played golf regularly, he would want to go back to playing professionally, and not want to work in an office. There was no casual playing for him.

In 2015, he took another shot at professional golf and qualified for the Mackenzie Tour in Canada, which he stuck with for

two years. The first year, he said, he played OK, but the second, he simply missed too many cuts, many by a stroke or two. At that point, he decided to stop once again, and in early 2017 he joined Virtus Health.

“It is hard to ask people who have supported you (as sponsors) to keep going,” Lauer said. “I felt like it was time to move on, swallow that pride. Guys grind and grind, and most will not make it. At some point, you have to be realistic. I am not one to lie to myself.”

When Lauer plays now, with friends or by himself, he plays “free and clear,” he said. No pressures, professional or financial, fill his head. He just gets in his stance and swings.

Lauer said he is happier with the state of his game now than he has been in a long time.

But there is also a nagging part of his brain, a contradicting part, that will not let him quit his dreams, at least not fully.

Lauer referenced Michael Jordan, who tried to retire from basketball multiple times before it stuck, and Kobe Bryant, who announced in 2018 his plans to open a youth basketball academy. For a lot of athletes, there is simply no letting go.

That is why Lauer is taking the Suncoast Classic so seriously.

He often spends his lunch hour hitting balls, then gets in 90 minutes after work. He under-

goes cryotherapy treatments at Hydr8 Wellness Center to get his body as loose as possible. He is doing everything he can, in other words, to give himself the best shot at success.

“I want to play again, let’s be honest,” Lauer said with a smirk.

“I want to give myself that chance. I would be lying if I said that was not the goal.

“I know I can still play. I have the talent. I do not think I am far from breaking through (to the pro ranks). It is a shot here and there that is the difference.”

Who knows? As Lauer said, one phenomenal tournament can change a golfer’s fortunes.

In his ideal world, Lauer said he wants to play well enough to play again the next week, and so on.

Will there ever be a time Lauer stops trying to break through?

“I do not want to think about that,” Lauer said. “Maybe, but I could also still make it on the Senior Tour at 50 or so. I want to be competitive in the game forever.”

Will the Suncoast Classic be the start of Lauer’s next chapter?

I cannot wait to find out.

When did you start playing soccer?

When I was 4. My dad (Omar Benjoud) was a professional player in Morocco, so he wanted me to play. I used to only want to do cartwheels in the fields all day, but I played eventually.

What is the appeal to you?

For me, it is about getting the results you want after working hard for them. Staying disciplined and realizing that it will pay off.

What is your best skill?

I am a technical player. I keep the ball close to me, and I shout and set up plays. And I can finish them.

The coaching staff is great. I play club soccer for Tampa Bay United, and the coaches come to my games all the time. It just became clear it was the best option for me. Plus, it is right off the beach.

What is your favorite food?

Fair pigs

earn the bacon proudly watched her son, Lakewood Ranch junior J.T. Girman, take his pig into the arena.

The Girmans don’t own a farm, but six years ago, J.T. told his mom he wanted to get involved in agriculture and he joined Future Farmers of America. Danielle was asked if it was a good decision.

“It’s been everything you ever can imagine,” she said. “This is his first time showing a pig.”

J.T. proved he has a sense of humor. His 247-pound pig’s name is Lindsay Loham.

he Manatee County Fair, which continues its run through Jan. 27, demonstrated even a pig needs to be more of a hog sometimes.

Myakka City 8-year-old Simeon Stillman had hoped to show the pig he has been raising at the fair. He was disappointed.

“My pig didn’t make weight,” he said.

Even so, Stillman was in the barn area helping his friends, Myakka City’s Azaiah Henry and Hezekiah Henry, who both will be showing steers.

Time for tradition

P

alm Aire resident Carl Morris is proud of his Scottish heritage, and part of that is having fun.

On Jan. 19, he joined about 100 Sarasota-area Scots to celebrate the contribution’s of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, at the Palm Aire Country Club.

Supper, the annual birthday celebration for Burns.

Morris said it is an international tradition that takes place in the same format across the globe, with bagpipers, a Scottish troubadour, a toast to the haggis, and a toast to the lassies and a response to the laddies.

It all led to a grand celebration.

Chili days ahead for Lakewood Ranch Skyline Chili makes its debut in East County.

fter 30 years of eating at Skyline Chili restaurants, Joan Zai still loved every visit.

Her best friend of 20 years, Susan Wiegele, feels the same way.

When Wiegele moved to Lakewood Ranch seven years ago from northern Kentucky, Zai would send her Skyline Chili. Wiegele’s family also would make special trips to the Skyline Chili location in Clearwater.

“My son (Zach) knows the closest one is 43 miles from the house,” Wiegele said, laughing.

But by Jan. 31, Lakewood Ranch will have its own Skyline Chili franchise.

Zai, Weigele and Zai’s niece, Amy Groene, have partnered to bring Cincinnati-based Skyline Chili to Lakewood Ranch.

It will open at 4112 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Lakewood Ranch, in the Shoppes at Commerce Park, just north of Technology Terrace.

Skyline Chili is not a thick Texas-style chili, but rather a thin chili poured on top a bed of spaghetti. It is topped with mild

Wisconsin cheddar cheese.

That three-part combination is Skyline Chili’s specialty “3-way.” Customers also can add onions or beans, or both.

“You eat it like a pie — no twirling — so you blend all the flavors,” Zai said.

The chili itself has an aromatic flavor that’s hard to describe.

The recipe is a secret, but the women said it is not spicy and it does not contain chocolate or the flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate.

“One of the things we know is it’s addictive,” Skyline Chili franchise consultant Mary Redwine said. “People crave (Skyline). We are a brand of fanatics.

It’s not uncommon for someone to eat Skyline seven days a week in Cincinnati.”

Zai has many of those customers back home in northern Kentucky, where she’s owned a franchise location for 13 years.

She hopes to create a similar fan base here in Lakewood Ranch.

She said the secret is getting people to try it three times.

She and the other co-owners said they are confident Skyline fans will bring their friends and neighbors to try Skyline Chili, and those people will become fans, as well.

“People come by here every day. The buzz has been unbelievable,” said Wiegele, who worked in Skyline’s corporate office until she moved here.

“It’s very encouraging.”

Skyline’s 3-way is its signature dish, but it also is known for its cheese coney, a grilled hot dog on a steamed bun, dabbed with mustard and topped with Skyline chili.

Other menu offerings include deli sandwiches, Skyline dip and salads, which can be converted into wraps.

In Cincinnati, Skyline is known for its food and customer service.

“I always equate it to the Cincinnati version of ‘Cheers,’” Groene said of the atmosphere.

Workers know customers by name and what they typically order.

Wiegele and Zai, who met 20 years ago while working in Skyline Chili’s corporate offices, hatched the idea three years ago to open a Lakewood Ranch Skyline Chili location. Zai wanted to be a snowbird and still has her own restaurant in Kentucky.

Wiegele had stopped working when she moved to Florida and was ready for a new challenge.

Groene grew up working in Skyline stores, including her aunt’s, and managed a location from ages 18 to 30.

Here, Groene will manage the Lakewood Ranch location while Wiegele will do its marketing.

The women say they hope the Skyline location will be the hometown eatery it is in their hometown. Wiegele said she hopes the restaurant will provide a safe place for high school students to work and gather.

“In Lakewood Ranch, there are not a lot of restaurants where all the high schoolers can go,” she said.

The Lakewood Ranch Skyline Chili location is the company’s sixth in Florida. Other locations are in Clearwater, Fort Myers, Sunrise, Naples and Fort Lauderdale.
