HAVE A VOICE School District of Manatee County School Board member James Golden will hold “Constituent Contact Meetings” from 6-8 p.m. on the Thursdays before each of the board’s regularly scheduled workshop and board meetings. Meetings will be held at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA, 5100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. Parents can talk with Golden one-on-one to share thoughts about future agenda items or other issues. Parents will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis, with about 15 minutes reserved per parent or couple.

Board workshops and meetings generally are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

Time to listen District’s newest school board member seeks broader ‘sphere of listening.’

In a conference room Dec. 6 at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA, Manatee County’s newest school board member, James Golden, sat ready to listen.

education advocate, shared her concerns about the district’s curriculum, over-reliance on computer-aided education and focus on state testing, along with the importance of having a nationwide search for a new superintendent.

Elected in August, Golden has stepped into a contentious discussion involving Interim Superintendent Cynthia Saunders and whether she should be hired full time. Her contract, set to expire June 30, does not allow her to apply for the superintendent position, nor does it guarantee her previous role of deputy superintendent of instructional services.

She has been serving as interim superintendent since June 28.

Golden said he had hoped to get parent input on the superintendent search and other issues during the first of his regular Constituent Contact Meetings.

They will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA, 5100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Bradenton, the Thursday before regularly scheduled board meeting.

“What I had hoped to do is to address agenda items before I am required (to vote),” Golden said.

“I am sensing there’s more value to be had not just from hearing agenda issues, but hearing about the attitudes parents have about the public school system.”

Golden said he wants to listen and understand the issues from parents’ perspectives.

“It’s important that the sphere of listening be larger than the board meetings and the public comments issued therein,” Golden said. “There ought to be an opportunity for a broader listening sphere, and that’s what this is for.”

Mendel said she was grateful for the chance to speak one-on-one with a board member. She called Golden “the change agent” for the board.

“Parents are blown away (you are doing this),” she said. “We are so happy to have a board member who is willing to take the time to talk with us.”

Mendel was the only parent who showed up for the Constituent Contact Meeting, but Golden said notice went out late. He is not discouraged.

“I’m glad someone showed up,” he said. “It can only get better from here.”

More traffic in store Community entrance may be gated to prevent plaza spillover.

ngela DeAngelis and Eileen Bland stood at the corner of Lighthouse Drive and Cape Harbour Loop and looked southward toward Interstate 75, where a wire fence serves as the only barrier between them and a construction zone for a new commercial plaza being built just south of their Lighthouse Cove community.

Residents of Lighthouse Cove at Heritage Harbour are anxious about what will be going into the plaza, rumored to be anchored by a Costco Wholesale store and have more than 20 businesses.

But they are more worried about how the project will affect their roadways.

Some believe gating the roads may be a solution to future traffic problems.

“With this big project going forward, it’s going to create traffic through our neighborhood. The impact is a concern,” said DeAngelis, who serves as president for her section of Townhomes at Lighthouse Cove. “We have a lot of unanswered questions about the flow of traffic on that road.

“It’s a pretty community and now it’s going to have major commercial activity running through it,” she said.

Lighthouse Drive is a northsouth road that separates Lighthouse Cove town houses from their single-family home counterparts. Townhomes at Lighthouse Cove has a main access off Lighthouse Drive, and there are two entrances from Lighthouse Drive into the single-family home section to the east.

Plans for the commercial project call for Lighthouse Drive to become a main roadway for the plaza and connect Grand Harbour Parkway on the east to Port Harbour Parkway to the north.

That means the existing 1,600foot section of Lighthouse Drive may transform from a road only Lighthouse Cove residents use to access their homes into a back entrance for commercial trucks and other vehicles to the plaza, DeAngelis said.

Supervisors on the Heritage Harbour South Community Development District on Dec. 4 discussed the possibility of gating Lighthouse Drive at Port Harbour Parkway to limit nonresidential traffic on the roadway.

Residents of Lighthouse Cove also are exploring options for gating sections of their community to prevent commercial trucks from driving through the streets.

Construction has begun on a new commercial plaza at the northeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 64, but developer JMP Holdings Inc. has not announced the plaza’s name or tenants. Site plans going through the county show spaces for more than 20 businesses along with a large anchor store.

The plan that has been considered by the county indicates there will be 350 luxury residences and a hotel.

A site plan released on Facebook identifies some tenants, including a 155,000-square foot Costco and stores including At Home, Portillo’s restaurant, Walk-Ons and Olive Garden.

include closing off Chatum Light Run at Lighthouse Drive and adding gates at Burning Light Way and Harbour Lights Way — both short connector roads into the single-family home section of Lighthouse Cove.

“We are in the brainstorming stage,” DeAngelis said. “How can we keep our neighborhood as peaceful and tranquil as we can?”

Bland said residents are most concerned with having commercial trucks drive through neighborhoods, as well as noise, fumes and impacts on safety at bus stops.

Heritage Harbour South Community Development District Supervisor Tad Parker said the CDD will work with residents to address their concerns as much as possible. The CDD owns the roadways within Lighthouse Cove, including Lighthouse Drive south to its current southernmost endpoint.

Parker and district engineer Rick Schappacher are waiting for proposed roadway modifications from Lighthouse Cove residents before discussing those ideas with Manatee County transportation officials. Then, they hope to secure a meeting with the developer of the commercial property, Joe Marino, founder of JMP Holdings, or a representative. JMP Holdings is a developer specializing in retail, residential, industrial and commercial projects throughout the U.S. In an email, Marino said the CDD could not block off Lighthouse Drive because the road is part of the master plan for the community. He did not respond to further requests for comment by deadline Tuesday.

Parker said the CDD will explore its options for protecting residents.

District interim superintendent faces sanctions Cynthia Saunders could have her Educator Certificate revoked.

t a time when the School District of Manatee County has been considering whether to offer Interim Superintendent Cynthia Saunders the permanent position, Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart has accused her of two statute violations and five rules violations.

Those violations, which were made public Dec. 6, include filing fraudulent information, using coercive means or promised special treatment to influence professional judgments of colleagues and failure to maintain honesty in all professional dealings.

Stewart’s letter stated, “I find probable cause exists to justify sanctions against your Florida Educator Certificate. Penalties levied against you may include reprimand, fine, probation, restriction of the scope of practice, suspension not to exceed five years, revocation not to exceed 10 years or the permanent revocation of your Educator Certificate.”

In material allegations, Saunders is accused, from 2014 to 2016, of “fraudulently inflating graduation rates for her district by instructing subordinate district employees to improperly code student withdrawals. Respondent

improperly instructed district employees to code withdrawing students as ‘withdrawn to home education’ when neither the students nor the students’ parents had any intention of home schooling.”

The complaint noted that during 2014-2015, only six of 121 withdrawing students were coded properly, causing the district’s graduation rate to be improperly reflected.

The School District of Manatee County issued a response through Mitchell Teitelbaum, the district’s general counsel. The statement said Saunders took immediate steps to correct the improper coding when she learned of it and never had any intent to affect the

district’s rating, but rather was following prior training.

“The allegations of the Office of Inspector General and Department of Education that the District purposely and willingly sought to enhance graduation rates is unsupported by any empirical evidence. At no time did Ms. Saunders direct staff to inflate graduation rates and improperly code students. The record clearly shows the opposite of any intent to purposefully skew numbers. No one, including the Office of Inspector General or DOE, has any basis for that accusation.”

Residents are particularly worried about safety at the entrance and exit to Greenbrook East, across from Post Boulevard. A curve in the road and the speed of cars make the intersection dangerous.

“They’ve been asking for a light there for years,” Davey said.

“Everybody I have talked to certainly is anxious to have some improvements on that road. The development has outpaced the roads. You’ve got all these houses going in, but you don’t have the roads to handle the volume.”

Rick said the project now is being designed and FDOT will consider roundabouts and other traffic control measures to improve safety at neighborhood entrances, particularly at the future Uihlein Road, the future Bourneside Boulevard, Del Webb Boulevard, Greenbrook Boulevard/Post Boulevard and Greenbrook Boulevard.

The project design phase is expected to last until winter 2020.

Rick said construction is expected to start two years after all right of way is acquired, likely between June 2022 and June 2023.

s growth continues in the greater Lakewood Ranch area, the Florida Department of Transportation is exploring options for widening State Road 70 east of Lorraine Road.

FDOT will hold a public meeting Dec. 18 to show plans to the public and solicit input. FDOT’s basic plan is to widen State Road 70 from Lorraine Road east to Greenbrook Boulevard/Post Boulevard from four to six lanes. The section from Greenbrook Boulevard east to County Road 675 would be widened from two to four lanes. The road would have a 6-foot sidewalk both directions.

“This meeting will provide a great opportunity to speak with the engineers as they are designing the project,” FDOT spokesman Brian Rick said.

For the meeting, engineers and other FDOT staff will be on-site to answer questions and collect feedback from residents. Rick said resident input is considered as FDOT designs the road.

eanca Gordner was setting up assortments of mushrooms Dec. 5 while watching potential customers stream into The Market at Lakewood Ranch on the market’s opening day.

Gordner had come to the Sarasota Polo Club for the market last season, selling Mr. Fun Guy’s mushrooms and was glad to be back for more.

“I loved it last year,” she said.

“This is a great community.”

Gordner said The Market seems about double the size of its first year in terms of vendors. She said the solid crowds obviously attracted the vendors. She said Monaca Onstad, director of community relations for Lakewood Ranch Communities, and The Market Manager Morgan Bettes have built a vendor-friendly environment.

Onstad said the vendor count at the end of last season grew to about 30 after starting with about 15 vendors. The Dec. 12 market will host Maker’s Market, a special event held the second Wednesday of every month that features local crafters. More than 60 vendors are expected.

ick Vitale was in a hurry.

Sitting in the garage of his Country Club home in Lakewood Ranch, he was speed-signing his new book, “Dick Vitale’s Mount Rushmores of College Basketball.”

More than 100 copies of his book, written with Dick Weiss, sat in stacks in front of him. The ESPN basketball announcer was grabbing one at a time and signing his trademark “Awesome baby!” along with other personal tidbits followed by his signature.

At 79, it wouldn’t seem Vitale needs to be in a hurry for any reason. With four decades of ESPN announcing, coaching stints in high school, college and the NBA, 12 inductions to various halls of fame and eight movies in the bank (six playing himself), he has earned the right to sit in his home with his wife of 47 years, Lorraine, playing checkers.

That won’t happen, baby.

Besides working a full college basketball schedule for ESPN, offering his motivational speaking services and writing books, Vitale is a man on his most important mission. He wants to provide every dollar possible to The V Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer, founded in 1993

by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano.

At the front of the book is a page with the photos of 17 children who have attended his fundraiser, the Dick Vitale Gala, and since have died from cancer.

Those memories, painful as they might be, keep Vitale hurtling forward as he approaches 80. Every dollar he earns from “Mount Rushmores of College

Basketball” will go to The V Foundation.

“Can you believe what happens in life?” Vitale asked in between signatures. “My dad (John Vitale) was a factory worker, and I’ve spent 40 years at ESPN doing games and more games. The other day I was in Ann Arbor (Mich.), and I couldn’t believe the kids there were treating me like royalty. It gave me goosebumps.”

While he was talking, his daughter, Sherri Krug, pulled into the driveway with his grand-

Vitale called Sherri to him, and loaded about 10 books into her arms with instructions on where to place them in the house so they could be shipped. Ava, a homeschooled seventh-grader who is a nationally ranked junior tennis player, chatted with her grandfather for a few moments before she was loaded up with books as well.

It was obvious that everything Vitale does includes a family team effort. Sherri and her husband, Thomas Krug, have twins Jake and Connor, along with Ava. Vitale’s daughter, Terri, and her husband, Chris Sforzo, have a daughter, Sydney, and son, Ryan.

To Vitale, they all belong on Mount Rushmore.

Back in the garage, Vitale needed more help. Sherri and Ava did not come back out, so he grabbed a stack of books himself and headed into the house. He dropped off the books with the others and went to

his office, which is stuffed with a museum’s worth of memorabilia.

There he wondered aloud how he was going to handle the six minutes he was being allotted Dec. 11 when he was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the New York Hilton Midtown.

“I can share what I learned at the dinner table (growing up in East Rutherford, N.J.),” he said.

“Never believe in ‘can’t.’

“And I always was told (by his dad, John, and mom, Mae) to be good to people and people will be good to you.”

Those six minutes are likely to include a few other things he learned, such as how he dealt with being fired Nov. 8, 1979, as the Detroit Pistons head coach.

“When that happens, people don’t return your calls,” he said.

“It’s like you have the plague.

“So I went home and was moping. I had been watching Luke and Laura on ‘General Hospital’ every day. I was as down as I ever have been.

“Then my wife ... and everything starts with my wife because for 47 years she has been a saint ... forced me to stop. She said, ‘You’re not the first guy this has happened to, so stop moping.’”

He still repeats that lesson at his dinner table. “The key in life, and I give my grandkids this talk, is how you handle tough times.

You have two choices. You can just feel sorry for yourself, or you can pick up the pieces.”

Vitale picked up the pieces and Dec. 5, 1979, he worked ESPN’s first college basketball game, Wisconsin at DePaul.

“When I first was told about ESPN, I thought it sounded like a disease,” he said.

He became infected with the love of broadcasting and now, 40 years later, those who want to read his picks of the best performers during that time can enjoy the book and at the same time support The V Foundation.

Time to focus on school board decisions

But wouldn’t you like to ask your board members, “What’s the hurry?”

Wouldn’t you like to ask, “Why didn’t you do a thorough job search?”

Mitchell Teitelbaum, the general counsel for the School District of Manatee County,

responded to the Florida Education Practices Commission’s accusations by calling them — and I am paraphrasing his legalese — ludicrous.

These charges surfaced a couple of years ago and involved the way Saunders instructed her workers to code students who had withdrawn during the 2014-2015 school year. The

school district did an exhaustive investigation into the matter and found that, while Saunders might have been misinformed about the proper way to code students, nothing was done purposefully to benefit the district in its ratings.

Stewart believes otherwise, and the two parties will go at it as the district and Saunders face the Florida Education Practices Commission.

The board members, obviously, agree with Teitelbaum that the charges are poppycock.

But shouldn’t they wait a bit to see how this plays out?

Shouldn’t they interview a few candidates?

Board Chairman Scott Hopes told the East County Observer that the board is confident due process eventually will clear Saunders, and it feels it needs a strong leader immediately at a fragile time for the district.

It’s a sign-her-up-or-lose-her mentality.

This is where the taxpayers and the voters come into play.

Get involved. Go to these town hall meetings and tell Golden how you feel. Let him carry the message to his fellow board members.

Somebody has got some explaining to do.

Fair questions need to be asked.

Using common sense, you would think that no one who is interested in the job would take the interim job with such a clause.

In a district that just lost its superintendent to greener pastures, wouldn’t you be concerned about hiring someone who you believe might be likely to switch districts?

In a beautiful community, in a growing and economically healthy part of Florida, wouldn’t you want to hold a national search to see what kind of talent is out there?

Those meetings with Golden could get interesting.

This board could use some help.

Think of the direction it is going, or not going. The School District of Manatee County needs a new superintendent, at least it did by our Dec. 11 deadline for this week’s issue. It’s the most important hire the board can make.

But there they were, at a school board afternoon workshop Dec. 11, contemplating whether they should scrap the job search process to which they committed and sign up Interim Superintendent Cynthia Saunders later that night.

Gee whiz, why wait? Does it matter Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart notified Saunders on Dec. 6 that she had found probable cause to have her Educator Certificate revoked for “fraudulently inflating graduation rates for her district?”

I guess not.

I read your piece on East County road safety, or rather lack of it, in the East County Observer (Dec. 6).

While I agree with you this is a serious issue, I’m afraid that your suggested response(s) have been tried to no avail.

I live in Watercrest, and I, along with dozens of my neighbors, contacted our county commissioner, Vanessa Baugh, last spring. She instructed county staff to investigate. They did and concluded there was no problem, or at least, not a problem that warranted any action.

To add insult to injury, one county employee suggested we exit out the back end of our community — into Edgewater.

Apart from the fact this would require going several miles out of our way, we can’t even do this.

That gate is closed, and we do not have access to it. It is only available for emergency vehicles.

We then requested a meeting with Commissioner Baugh to present our case in person to demonstrate why it is very dangerous to exit and represents a serious risk. In fact, my upstairs neighbor — a careful driver, was T-boned last spring (this was what finally motivated me to contact Commissioner Baugh).

Commissioner Baugh basically blew us off. She said she could not say when she would be available, but it wouldn’t be for several months, at the earliest.

Watercrest is the poor sight lines because of the road curvature on the left, when attempting to go south, and the landscaping (trees) on the right when in the median waiting to get into a southbound lane. Even with patience, with the speed that many cars are traveling, it is also dangerous to exit with the traffic, as you suggest, and go north. Again, we cannot see the cars coming from the south until they are almost at the Watercrest entrance, because of the curve in the road.

We don’t care what the solution is — roundabout, traffic signal, stop signs — whatever. But something needs to be done, and sooner rather than later. With the growth of Lakewood Ranch, and the planned September completion of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension to Fruitville, the problem is only going to get worse — much worse.

To my mind, the most important function of government is ensuring the safety of citizens.

Funding is not the problem — it is a matter of priorities.

I only hope and pray that no one has to be seriously injured, or worse, for the county to (finally) take action.

Please, no more traffic circles I am writing about roundabouts, or as they’re known in New Jersey, traffic circles. My wife and I moved from New Jersey this year and were unpleasantly surprised to find them. For years, New Jersey has been doing away with them, replacing them with intersections and traffic lights, for all the reasons mentioned in your column (Dec. 6).

We had the chance to ask a member of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Department what’s with the traffic circles? He laughed and said he doesn’t know anyone who’s in favor of them. Now it seems they will be constructed on State Road 64 at GreyHawk Landing and Rye Road and Lorraine Road.

I would like to congratulate Pam Eubanks and the Observer for the recent article entitled “Campaign targets drug abuse.”

I moved to Lakewood Ranch, after retiring from the federal government in 2013. My professional career and experience gained at various government agencies extends over 28 years and reflects a diverse experience in drug policy.

In 2015-2017, I served as chair for the Board of Trustees of the Manatee County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, known as Drug Free Manatee.

At the midst of the crisis, DFM and its Addiction Crisis Task force designed a strategic action plan to address this epidemic. A number of community organizations created a unison partnership to tackle this crisis.

We have seen a significant reduction of overdose deaths, and it is a compelling story of community coalition work.

first, but the city installed signs with diagrams showing the proper lane usages and turning options well in advance of the actual circles, again as vehicles approached circles and again as vehicles could exit the circles.

I believe most residents came to appreciate the efficiency of the traffic circles. Signs also reminded drivers to stay in their lanes, as well as which vehicles had the right of way.

I have not seen this same kind or amount of signage at any of the LWR or Sarasota traffic circles.

I hope our local officials will try adding directional signage, as many drivers seem to be unfamiliar with traffic circles.

The Lakewood Ranch High boys soccer team is hoping that is the case.

The Mustangs reached the state championship game that season, losing 1-0 to Cypress Bay High after an early red card on one of the team’s offensive leaders, Ricky Yanez, hindered the Mustangs’ other star forward, Pablo Vargas, and his ability to attack.

The current Mustangs (8-0-0 as of Dec. 7) share a lot of similarities with that team. They are ranked No. 9 in the country by MaxPreps as of Dec. 7, and were ranked as high as third earlier in the season.

They are expected to go deep into the playoffs, even after last season’s disappointing exit in the regional quarterfinals, because of the talent throughout the team’s position groups.

The Mustangs’ offense is also led by a familiar name, Wilmer Yanez, Ricky’s brother. Yanez, who was also on the 2017 team, leads the Mustangs with 11 goals through eight games, and said he is excited by the chance to chase a state title.

“I love it,” Yanez said. “Obviously Ricky is my brother, and Pablo is basically a brother to me as well. I want people texting him (Vargas), ‘Hey, Wilmer’s getting more goals than you.’ I love being able to help my team in that way.”

Yanez said he is a completely different player than his brother, who looked for assists before goals, while Vargas is more of

a scorer. Mustangs coach Vito Bavaro said Wilmer Yanez is a sturdy player who is able to take bumps from opponents and continue on his run to the goal.

When he gets in position, there’s no secret about what he’s trying to do.

“I just shoot it at a corner and bury it,” Wilmer Yanez said.

Bavaro wants fans to know that the Mustangs are much more than Yanez, as good as he is. Senior brothers Travis and Ryan Freeman are team captains with Travis manning the midfield and Ryan the net. Seniors Alex Thompson and Josh Hays are top midfielders, and junior Najii Greene-Villegas is the team’s second-leading scorer. Seniors Andrew Schagen and Garrett Zimmerman lead the defense.

As good as the Mustangs are now, Bavaro and Yanez believe they will be even better as the season progresses and the team’s on-field chemistry increases.

opponents 26-7 on the season. He said once the team starts executing better, it will stop merely winning games and start dominating them. The 2017 team outscored its opponents 31-3 through eight games, but did not carry the perfect record the current team does — it tied Venice High 1-1.

“Anyone else would be happy with how they have played, but I am not,” Bavaro said. “I know they can do better.

“They are always learning. That is what I like about these kids.

They want to work hard.”

The similarities are there.

Yanez and the Mustangs hope to add “reached the state title game” to that list, then differ from the 2017 team by bringing home the program’s first championship.

ll East County’s Conner Morrell saw at the start of his United Sprint Car Series Racing Outlaw Thunder Tour race Nov. 9 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala was “Smoke.”

That’s “Smoke,” as in the nickname of racing legend Tony Stewart, who started in the pole position. Morrell, who is 14, was in the front row next to him.

“I didn’t think I’d be next to a famous NASCAR driver,” Morrell said. “I didn’t think I would get the outside pole either, because I didn’t have a great car that day.

It was cool.”

Morrell, a freshman at Braden River High, said it was difficult to glean anything from Stewart’s racing habits while keeping his own eyes on the road at 120 mph, but Morrell said he did decide to follow Stewart’s racing line, because Stewart was clearly the fastest car on the track.

After the race, in which he finished eighth, Morrell got a chance to chat with Stewart, the race winner, for a few moments.

“He said I had a good race, that we ran together for a while before my car fell off a little,” Morrell said. “It was cool to shake his hand.”

only imagine what it felt like for Morrell to be in his car and see Stewart just in front of him.

Of course, my baseball career quickly sputtered to a stop.

Morrell actually has a chance to move up the auto racing ranks.

The USCS race was a cap to Morrell’s 2018 season, but he spent the majority of the year racing in the Great Lakes Super Sprints series, graduating from his 600 mini-sprint car to a fullsize, winged 360 sprint car in the process. The GLSS holds races at renowned raceways in the Midwest, including three in Indiana: Plymouth Speedway, Montpelier Motor Speedway and, Morrell’s favorite, Gas City Speedway.

Morrell and his father, Allen Morrell, would spend weeks at a time on the road, working out of National Hot Rod Association driver Terry McMillan’s shop in Elkhart, Ind. When school started in August, things got trickier.

Morrell said he would catch the latest flight possible on Friday, race over the weekend, and catch the earliest flight possible back after his races.

Morrell did not have time to adjust to the full-size cars, either. The first time he raced one was May 4, in the qualifying for his first GLSS race at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich.

“It was insane, to be honest,”

Morrell said. “They handle a lot different. (They have) more horsepower, and they are easier to spin. But I did pretty well, I won the ‘B Feature’ race that night.”

Morrell finished 17th in the “A Feature” afterward. He got better as the season went along, taking one Top 5 finish (Aug. 3 at Hartford Speedway in Hartford, Mich.) and two other Top 10 finishes. He finished 17th in the GLSS points standings and was named the series’ Rookie of the Year.

Not bad for a 14-year-old, huh?

Morrell said his ultimate goal is still to race in NASCAR, and at this point it seems attainable if his trajectory stays constant.

After all, he hung with Smoke.

Not many adults can say that.

When did you start playing basketball?

When I was 5. My parents (Chris and Jodi Mauk) had me try a bunch of different sports and basketball stuck.

My hearing. I was born with hearing loss in both ears. Sometimes I miss play calls, so I have to make sure I am looking at my coaches and my teammates when they are talking to me.

Some of the dogs competing Dec. 3 in the International K9 Frisbee Toss and Fetch League at Foster Dog Farms in Myakka City seemed to forget about a critical part of the competition.

The fetch part.

All the dogs seemed to understand the chase, where their human teammates would toss a Frisbee down the center of a field marked off in 10-yard increments. To score points, the dogs needed to chase the Frisbee and catch it before it hit the ground. Catching the Frisbee with all four feet off the ground meant bonus points and each additional 10 yards of distance meant another point as well.

Each dog-owner team had one minute to make as many successful tosses as possible. That, of course, meant the dogs had to hurry back to the owner, and not try to play keep away.

When things went wrong — these were after all, dogs — the competitors tended to enjoy a good laugh. It was obvious this league was mostly about fun.

It all came about because of a friendship between Sarasota’s Linda Shoenberger and Foster Dog Farms owners Allie and Joe Menendez.

Shoenberger and her son, Landon, had participated in competitions such as UpDog Challenges, where the rules are similar but on a broader scale. Those who participate in UpDog Challenges can be serious about their hobby.

Shoenberger wanted to start a league where enjoyment and camaraderie were the main factors. Allie and Joe Menendez had the space, and they agreed.

Now Allie Menendez is one of the competitors.

And if the competitors do want to take it a little more seriously, they can. Landon Shoenberger and his 4-yearold Belgian Malinois, Merlin, are ranked No. 10 out of 1,483 teams.

niversity Park Country Club resident Lynn Pisani pulled a blackand-gold masquerade mask out of a box Dec. 8 to make her ensemble complete.

Fifteen years earlier, she had gotten it for Mardis Gras, but it proved the perfect touch for the University Park Women’s Club’s 14th annual Diamond and Crystal Charity Ball.

Pisani said she brought the mask with her from New York when she moved three years ago to Florida.

She and other guests of the event said they loved the masquerade theme, but they especially loved the evening’s purpose — raising money for the nonprofit Just for Girls.

“This is a really nice affair,” member Diana Goodman said.

“It’s really philanthropic.”

After an hour of socializing, guests went inside for dinner, music and dancing.

As for the race itself, runners are outfitted with jingle bells, florescent laces and lighted flashers, which are provided by the race committee. Holiday music plays along the race route, which begins at the hospital and ends on Main Street.

The race features a “wave start” which allows the faster runners to line up ahead of the pack for safety. The first 1,800 runners will receive a Leslie Jordan micromesh wicking shirt.

Cowan, who retired after 25 years serving as the president of Middlesex Community College in Massachusetts, said she hopes the Auxiliary can award at least five recipients with $1,000 scholarships from the race and perhaps more.

t doesn’t take long for anyone entering the door at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center to be introduced to Auxiliary volunteers.

Those volunteers could be helping a person find a location in the hospital, or delivering a package. They might be doing a task that makes a nurse’s job a bit easier or they could be driving the parking lot shuttle.

And now, the Auxiliary will have an even greater impact at the hospital.

The Lakewood Ranch Medical Center Auxiliary’s board has joined forces with the Sisterhood for Good Giving Circle to help Race Director Doug Schiller with the sixth annual Jingle 5K Run/ Walk at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch on Friday, Dec. 21.

For that effort, race proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary’s Nursing and health Careers’ Scholarship Program.

Lakewood Ranch’s Carole Cowan, the Auxiliary president, said the hope is to find college students who already are working at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and who are pursuing their degree in nursing.

“This gives us a chance to do something significant,” Cowan said of the board. “These are scholarship dollars for nursing students, and it helps to take care of the workforce needs. It is important for area young people who want to go into these programs. We want to help them meet their financial needs.”

The Jingle 5K Run/Walk already is a successful race, which attracted more than 1,900 entries in 2017. Considering friends, family and volunteers, far more than 2,000 people are expected to descend on Main Street for the race and the after-party, which includes adult beverages and live music by the Savannah Brady Band and the Lakewood Ranch High School band.

The Auxiliary has 80 volunteers and 10 board members. Besides supplying volunteers to work on race night, the board members have been recruiting sponsors (Sarasota Orthopedic Associates is the title sponsor) and helping with administrative aspects of the race. Cowan said she hopes the Auxiliary works hard enough to continue to benefit from the race in the future.
