It’s the main question asked by Dustin Dahlquist, the new principal at Lakewood Ranch High School.

“Can we do better?”

Dahlquist, who officially becomes the school’s principal Jan. 22, said he knows he is step-

ping into a tradition of success as Lakewood Ranch has long been A-rated by the state, has strong program offerings and solid athletics.

“There’s the music program, the arts, the television production, the student journalists,” Dahlquist said. “There is a committed group of students and teachers. It’s high-achieving

everywhere.”

That may not leave much room for improvement, but Dahlquist said he’s coming to the school in “observation mode.” He has an open mind and ears, ready to listen to teachers, staff, parents and students about what they like, what they don’t like and what could perhaps be added.

“A culture of success is already here,” he said. “I’m here to enhance that. Where can we get to? You have to provide that vision.”

Dahlquist said Lakewood Ranch High is a top-rated high school with a 91% graduation rate.

“How are we going to do better?” Dahlquist said. “It won’t work if it’s just my ideas.”

Dahlquist said his initial objectives are to build relationships, to see what’s happening in

classrooms and to keep seniors focused the second half of the year as they prepare for graduation. He also wants to “deepen roots” in the community, seeing how the school can partner with Lakewood Ranch businesses and organizations.

He plans to spend a lot of time at after-school events and other functions to fulfill those goals.

“I plan to be here a lot. I’m not adverse to work. My wife (Megan) married a coach and teacher. I can bring my son (Dane) and he can take in all the things that go on and see all the possibilities for him — (Technology Student Association), television production, agriculture, ROTC. It’s going to be good for myself and my family.”

Dahlquist comes to Lakewood after serving as Buffalo Creek Middle School’s principal since 2016. Before that, he worked at Palmetto High School for 18 years, first as a science teacher and later as physical education teacher, athletic director and assistant principal. He worked in administration from 2007 until starting at Buffalo Creek.

Although Dahlquist’s principalship has been at the middleschool level, he said he’s excited to get back to the high school level.

Dahlquist said his time at Buffalo Creek has given him more perspective into the social, academic and other growth children go through in the grades leading up to high school, and he can better understand what needs freshmen, in particular, may have.

“The last four years at Buffalo Creek have been invaluable,” Dahlquist said. “I understand student growth and development so much more.”

When Market Street in Lakewood Ranch was built, a half-circle design was incorporated just north of Exchange Way to slow traffic as vehicles approached

Manatee County transportation officials are exploring a design change — eliminating that half-circle and taking the street straight through — they hope will improve traffic flow in the area.

intersection. That analysis had been required by an agreement the county made with the Florida Department of Transportation in 2014 to speed up funding for the diverging diamond interchange.

FDOT agreed to move the diverging diamond forward if Manatee and Sarasota counties would monitor traffic conditions at University Parkway’s intersections with Cooper Creek Boulevard/Cattlemen Road and at Market Street and make improvements when deemed necessary.

FDOT officials wanted to make sure those intersections did not hinder performance of the diverging diamond.

The analysis shows the Market Street and University Parkway intersection is performing well, according to Manatee County transportation officials, for the present.

However, Manatee County Public Works Director Chad Butzow said a traffic analysis by consultant HDR Inc. shows the modification to Market Street could help reduce stacking in the dual turn lanes for vehicles exiting Market Street onto University Parkway and for northbound vehicles on University Parkway turning onto Market Street.

The half-circle design is bordered by the Publix shopping center to the west, Walgreens to the north and another shopping plaza to the east.

“We have a proposal that makes Market Street a normal street straight through there,” Butzow said. “We would signalize (the intersection of) Market and Town Center Parkway.”

Manatee County had budgeted about $5 million in its Capital Improvement Program for the study of the Market Street and University Parkway interchange and potential improvements.

“Those concerns, while valid, are based off traffic projections out in 2030 or 2035,” Butzow said.

“They’re not immediate … there’s not a specific timing commitment here. We’ve got to continue to monitor it.”

Butzow said when HDR’s study deemed the Market Street-University Parkway intersection was performing OK, HDR evaluated other projects that could improve traffic flow in the area.

Butzow said the project is in its conceptual stage and still must go through formal design and land acquisition. He estimated the project could take up to 24 months, with about six months for construction.

“If you have friendly land deals, things tend to go faster,” he said.

Butzow said Manatee County has more than $3 million remaining available for the project and he expects the Market Street project would only cost about $1 million.

Other projects in Sarasota County, such as the extensions of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Lorraine Road to Fruitville Road, were promised and either are complete, are under construction or in the planning process.

“If the referendum doesn’t pass, everything will stop,” Barnebey said.

Superintendent vote postponed The School Board of Manatee County will postpone to Feb. 12 a workshop and vote on whether to hire interim Superintendent Cynthia Saunders for a three-year term.

A workshop on her contract was planned for Jan. 8 but was removed from the agenda because board member Scott Hopes wasn’t present. A vote on the contract was scheduled for Jan. 22, but at the board’s regular Jan. 8 meeting, school board member James Golden asked to postpone it because of his planned absence.

Since discussion of hiring Saunders began in December, Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart has accused her of two statute violations and five rules violations. Those violations, which were delivered Dec. 6, include filing fraudulent

information, using coercive means or promised special treatment to influence professional judgments of colleagues and failure to maintain honesty in all professional dealings.

Saunders has maintained her innocence, and members of the school board have said Saunders has excelled during her tenure as interim superintendent.

At the Jan. 8 meeting, Saunders read a prepared statement, in which she said she was “disappointed” by the accusations against her and her record has been of “utmost integrity” during her three decades of service in public education.

“Ultimately, it is my hope and desire that this school board and community will judge my honesty, integrity and ability on how I have worked with each of you individually and collectively since becoming superintendent on July 1, 2018,” Saunders said.

Recreation district strikes deal Members of the University Park Recreation District unanimously voted Jan. 11 to approve a contract between the district and the University Park Country Club’s property owners to purchase the University Park Country Club for $16,975,000.

Property owners include the Neal and Pasold families and other business entities.

The transaction includes the 266-acre country club, its 27-hole golf course, tennis facility and related buildings, plus 100 acres of undeveloped land, lakes, common areas and roads.

Supervisor Bob Wood said: “We were elected to protect the interests of the residents of University Park, and I’m confident that we accomplished that this morning.”

The next step for the community will be to hold a referendum on whether to issue bonds to secure the property.

Administrator announces retirement Manatee commissioners must decide about hiring process for top-level post.

anatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker has not been bored a day in his life, but he would like

to try.

At 71 years old, the Lakewood Ranch resident has been in county government for 51 years, the past 12 of which he spent at Manatee County’s helm. To put his worklife balance into perspective, he has accumulated 31 weeks of unused vacation time.

“I want to see what boredom is,” Hunzeker said. “I could be underestimating my ability to be a slacker. Maybe it will only last an hour, but I’d like to try.”

In December, Hunzeker surprised commissioners by announcing he plans to retire before his contract expires in January 2020. Instead, he plans to retire this spring to spend more time with his family — wife, Sharon, and their three sons and five grandchildren, who live outside the area.

“I don’t want to just see them at Christmastime,” Hunzeker said.

“I have graduations coming up.”

Hunzeker said he had agreed to stay around long enough to make sure there is a smooth transition either to an interim or permanent

replacement, but he’s ready for a change of pace. He said he does not want to have to worry about anything county related as he goes off to those family adventures. With more than 1,700 employees countywide, there’s always an email to respond to or situation in need of attention.

Commissioners are expected to discuss the next step to finding his replacement — whether by appointing an interim administrator or starting a national search — at their Jan. 22 meeting.

“They’ve got to figure out if they’re going to do a recruitment,” Hunzeker said.

Hunzeker said he believes Manatee County has good inhouse candidates, so he doesn’t believe a national search is necessary. He said the government is running efficiently and there are 12 qualified department directors in place.

“Most, if not all of them, could step up to do this,” Hunzeker said.

“Why not consider one of them before you hire an unknown?”

When the commission agreed in February 2018 to extend Hunzeker’s contract to Jan. 29, 2020, then-chairwoman Priscilla Whisenant Trace outlined a process in which Hunzeker would confer with the Florida Association of County Administrators about an administrator search, and the recruitment process itself would begin in summer 2019. The commission would meet with prospective candidates in the fall, giving the new hire time to work

Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker was appointed as Manatee County’s top official in November 2006.

He has his bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master of business administration from St. Louis University. In the 1970s, Hunzeker served as a health department administrator at a St. Louis hospital and in the 1980s was named chief financial officer for a regional transportation authority.

He began work in county administration in 1988 as an assistant county administrator of Hillsborough County, where he worked 15 years. He served as Osceola County administrator before joining Manatee County in late 2006.

“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it,” Hunzeker said of his time at the county’s helm. “I’m so proud of the (1,700) employees and their commitment to the community.”

Hunzeker said he plans to remain in the area and pursue his interests.

Public waters for sea lions With opening of a sea lion preserve to the public, East County has another attraction.

hile Sea Lion Splash has toured North America for more than 20 years, home in Myakka City always has been a place where the family — sea lions and trainers alike — could put up walls.

Those walls came down Dec. 1.

The Sarasota Sea Lion Preserve is now open to the public and hosting mostly small groups that want to learn about California and South American (or Patagonian) sea lions.

Marco Peters, the owner of the preserve’s parent company, Squalus Inc., said being 58 has a lot to do with his decision to take a shot at hosting a successful attraction in East County. He would like to seriously curtail the Sea Lion Splash traveling schedule.

“Everyone kept asking me why I didn’t open (the Myakka City facility) to the public.”

One reason always had been the Myakka City facility — a 30-acre site that includes Peters’ own home, and seven pools for the sea lions — is pristine.

“This is the way it always has been, how you see it now,” Peters said. “It always will be like this. I work here, and I live here.”

If he opened to the public, Peters wanted some control, so he has opened the facility to groups, booked online only. There is no drive-up admission price.

Tickets begin at $95 and go to $195. The tours are educational “experiences” that provide an intimate look at the sea lions, who are very affectionate, he

said. Peters’ partner, former circus equine acrobat Stefi Slavova, said, “That’s why they are called sea dogs.”

Those who visit actually do a painting with a sea lion along with interacting with them out of the water. The $195 ticket allows visitors to get into the pool with the sea lions.

lions in 1998 after he began housing rescued sea lions that could no longer care for themselves in the wild. His career with Ringling Brothers had ended. “When you get into your 30s in the circus, it’s like a football or baseball player,” he said. “You’re done.”

sea lions. He built his first pool, which is covered by what he calls a Quonset hut that has a curved roof that is built to withstand high winds such as a hurricane produces. Over the years, it has worked just fine and is a retreat for the sea lions when bad weather comes.

Peters explained to the National Marine Fisheries Service he had a facility to host sea lions deemed unable to return to the wild. He received his first two “beached” sea lions in 1998.

The preserve now is at full capacity of 23 sea lions and is monitored by the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

Four of the sea lions at the facility belong to the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo and Aquarium, which won’t have its sea lion exhibit ready for more than two years.

While any animal exhibit attracts scrutiny from the public, Peters stands by his love and care of the sea lions.

Slavova and the staff have “to make things interesting” every day for the sea lions.

“Sea lions can live to be 30, but most go blind by 18,” Peters said. “They get cataracts. But you never will find sea lions with the beautiful eyes ours have. We are water friendly, provide vitamins and preventive care. Our netting (above and around the pools) protects them from UV (ultraviolet).”

On Jan. 31, two of the older male sea lions at the preserve will have cataract surgery.

“Everything we do, we sink money into it,” Peters said.

Trainer Jessica Carmon said everyone at the preserve is committed to helping sea lions.

“Our biggest goal is finding ways to educate people how they can help,” she said.

Peters explained how one of the

sea lions, Stella, found her way to the preserve.

“She escaped from a show in the Dominican Republic (in 2006),” Peters said. “During a presentation, she jumped over a wall into the bay and took off.”

She washed up on a beach in Puerto Rico, close to death.

She couldn’t be sent to anywhere they didn’t already have Patagonian sea lions (they don’t survive alone), and Myakka City was one of the few options. She has been there ever since. She is now approximately 18.

She lives in a place that has 12 trainers and a sea lion kitchen that serves mostly “soft-boned” fish purchased from Cortez Bait & Seafood.

“They love squid,” Slavova said.

“That’s like their candy.”

Outside the kitchen is a scale where the sea lions are weighed each day after eating 7% of their body weight.

Peters, Slavova and the trainers design ways to entertain them.

“You’ve got to keep it interesting for them,” Peters said.

The trainers appear to love every hour they spend with the sea lions.

“I’ve been here three years,” trainer Tyla Holmes said. “I spend all my free time with them. If I want to take a nap with (the sea lions), I can.”

Slavova summed it up by saying, “We are very good at being one, big family.”

South American, or Patagonian, sea lions are found in abundance along the rocky coasts of South America where they consume several species of fish, cephalopods, and sometimes even small sea birds and fur seals.

California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are the most common marine mammal found on the western coast of the United States.

They live on rocky coastlines and in surf zones eating a variety of seafood such as squid, octopus and fish.

ddressing a press conference at Lakewood National Golf Club, Lake Erie College of Medicine Trustee Tom Wedzik remembered the first time he visited Lakewood Ranch in 2002.

He had been brought to the area from his home in Davenport to check out a proposed expansion site for the medical school. He thought the idea was crazy.

“I saw all the cows, or steers, surrounding us,” he said. “Thankfully, we had people who are smarter than I am. It was great to see this plan come together. The reality? This is a great venue. I am amazed at this county’s growth.”

Wedzik was a featured speaker Jan. 9 because LECOM was being announced as the title sponsor for the Suncoast Classic, a Web.com Tour event making its debut Feb. 11-17 at Lakewood National Golf Club.

LECOM, the PGA Tour and Global Golf Management struck a five-year agreement. The monetary end of the deal was not announced. Wedzik confirmed it was “substantially more” than $100,000 a year, but wouldn’t confirm the cost.

Although LECOM, with more than 4,000 students at its main campus in Erie, Pa., and its two satellites in Lakewood Ranch and Greensburg, Pa., is the largest medical school in the nation by enrollment, it continues an aggressive branding philosophy in Manatee and Sarasota counties. The Lakewood Ranch campus has 1,610 students enrolled.

In February 2017, LECOM purchased naming rights to the home of the Bradenton Marauders and the spring training site of the Pittsburgh Pirates, now LECOM Park.

LECOM, which opened its Lakewood Ranch campus in 2004 and added a LECOM Den-

tal building in 2012, paid approximately $230,000 a year for the 15-year deal.

Then in August, LECOM purchased Sarasota radio station WSRQ-FM from Sarasota’s Jim Lampl. The station will play hits from the 1960s and 1970s along with delivering health-related programming and news updates about LECOM. The price of the sale was not announced.

“It is an opportunity to get LECOM’s name out there and information about all its programs,” said LECOM Director of Communications Pierre Bellicini in August. “It’s about brand recognition.”

So why golf?

“We are the largest medical school in the nation,” Wedzik said.

“But what do they say? If you are No. 1, don’t rest on your laurels?

We see the Web.com golfers to be much like our students. We have students studying their hearts out four years to be called a doctor. These Web.com Tour players are doing the same thing, working hard to reach the ultimate level.”

He also said raising awareness is important nationwide in LECOM’s growth in Lakewood Ranch.

“If students are smart enough to get into medical school, they are smart enough to come to this beautiful area of Lakewood Ranch,” he said, noting LECOM is planning to expand the dental school in the near future.

Besides branding, Wedzik noted the tournament will benefit the LECOM Scholarship Fund to help its students pay the cost of attending medical school. He said proceeds from the tournament will go to other charities.

LECOM does have experience with the Web.com Tour. It has been the title sponsor since 2016 of the LECOM Health Challenge at the Peek’n Peak Resort in Clymer, N.Y. Among the field of 144 will be two Lakewood Ranch golfers. One is Lakewood Ranch High graduate Danny Walker, who won the final stage of the Web.com’s Tour Qualifying Tournament at Whirlwind Golf Club on Dec. 9 in Chandler, Ariz. The other is Lakewood Ranch High graduate Seath Lauer, a former Web.com player who received a special exemption into the tournament.

Death of a true hero in Lakewood Ranch I

“We both have very strong faith,” said his wife, Teri ZakReskow. “We feel there is an afterlife that is better than this life. That counts for a lot.”

She said her husband’s mental strength increased as his body declined.

“It actually was a little surprising that he took to (Tidewell Hospital volunteering) so well,” she said. “His whole attitude toward life changed when he got cancer (2007). I guess he realized it was precious.

“He first got involved with the Center for Building Hope (which closed in 2015) and he could relate to the cancer patients there. It was his own support group.”

When the Center for Building Hope closed, he sought ways to make his life more meaningful, and he found Tidewell Hospice.

“At Tidewell, he enjoyed working directly with the patients,” Zak-Reskow said. “He would talk to them, get them out of their shells. In his later life, he mellowed. He just wanted to help other people.”

moments, get away from their fight, Reskow didn’t mind being face-to-face with those who had been consumed by the disease.

He didn’t want an escape, even if some of those he was trying to help did. He would find ways to get some of the patients, who had declined to talk with anyone, to converse. He was at his best during vigils, in those final moments, when no one came to be at their bedside.

“He said people shouldn’t die alone,” Zak-Reskow said.

Eventually, he wrote 20 vignettes about the patients and passed them on to Tidewell to be used in their volunteer training materials. He hoped those

After I met with Reskow in August 2017, his health started to deteriorate. He began having pain in his back and shoulder as the cancer spread to his bones.

The hormone treatments he was taking stopped working. Once that happened, Zak-Reskow said the options were few.

She said he tried a couple of clinical trials, but his prostatespecific antigen levels started to “go crazy.”

He started chemo, but the cancer had spread to his spine.

At 9:30 a.m. March 16 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Lakewood Ranch, a service will be held for Lakewood Ranch’s Richard Reskow, who died Dec. 12 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

I don’t know that anyone will call Reskow, who died at 77, a hero.

They should.

I only met Reskow once, in August 2017 during his volunteer shift at Tidewell Hospice Ellenton when he described his experience as a volunteer.

Reskow, bright and positive the entire time, eventually talked about his own battle with cancer, an opponent he hoped he could beat.

I saw this tall man, still spry into his mid-70s, with these bright eyes, never flinch as he faced his own mortality. His concern was not for his own welfare, but for helping others who were going through what he considered a transition. This was a man with unwavering faith.

“That was heartbreaking,” Zak-Reskow said. “He thought if he did some more radiation, he would start feeling better and he could go back. But I knew.”

Last fall, Zak-Reskow said her husband was resigned and ready to go. He talked to her at length and kept asking her what he should do. The struggle no longer was about him. He wanted to be there for her.

“I told him I would support whatever he wanted to do,” she said. “If you don’t want to go through chemo, don’t do it for me.”

In September, it was time to call Tidewell Hospice. His wife summed up the support by saying, “They were wonderful.”

Richard Reskow had a successful professional life, which included 23 years as a sales, marketing and editorial executive for McGraw Hill. He moved to Lakewood Ranch in 2001 expecting to enjoy the good life.

That good life was different than what he envisioned. To those he helped, it was more.

For he was their hero.

The Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch announced in October it was moving to a new home at 26920 Gopher Hill Road, Myakka City. The site has a 3,200-squarefoot metal building and a 1,800-square-foot home on 5 acres. Stein said the new facility will be open as soon as the final permits are completed.

Lakewood Ranch’s Stein said she has attended several events at Fiorelli Winery, so she decided to ask Hall if he would host a fundraiser.

“It’s animals, and you should be kind to animals,” Hall said when asked why he agreed to host the event. “I have an open area, so a place where (the dogs) can walk around during the event.”

Stein said she was thrilled when he agreed.

“This is a great place for us,” she said. “It’s different.”

THIEF HAD LICENSE TO STEAL 15000 block of Skip Jack Loop, Lakewood Ranch Identity theft: A man came to the Sheriff’s Office to report an unknown person had stolen his personal information and used it to transfer his Florida license plate to another vehicle. The unknown vehicle was registered in the victim’s name and address.

The victim was approached by a Palmetto police officer who told him his license plate was not assigned to his Ford Edge. The victim showed the police officer his registration to showed the license plate was originally signed to his car. The victim went to the DMV and was told the license plate was assigned to a 2001 Honda Accord. He was issued a new plate.

PARKING LOT SCAM 5500 block of State Road 64 E., Bradenton Theft: A man reported to the Sheriff’s Office he was approached in the parking lot of a department store by a woman.

She had a $50 bill she said she needed change. The man told her to go into the department store to get the bill changed, but the woman said they wouldn’t change it unless she purchased something. He gave the woman two $20 bills and three $1 bills in exchange for the $50. He later realized the $50 bill was fake.

FISHING RODS WERE THE LURE 1100 block of 67th Avenue Terrace, Bradenton Grand theft: A man called the Sheriff’s Office to report the theft of several fishing rods off his porch.

The victim did not have the make or models of the rods he lost at the time of his report. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Lost property: A woman told the Sheriff’s Office she couldn’t find her Sig Sauer P938 Scorpion 9 mm pistol. She had been housesitting for some friends and she believes she set the firearm down, in its black nylon pouch, on a counter at the home.

She left the house and when she returned, she said she could not find the pistol. She said she searched throughout the home

without success. A case number was issued.

THIEF MUST BE MOTOR MOUTH 11000 Winding Woods Way, Bradenton Identity theft: A man called the Sheriff’s Office to report someone had stolen his identity and used it to open a Verizon Wireless account using his personal information. The account was opened in Oregon, where he had never lived. The thief already has run up a balance of $4,993.

VICTIM HAS NOT-SO-EMPTY FEELING 3400 block of 46th Street East, Bradenton Accidental firearm discharge: Sheriff’s Office deputies were sent to the scene after a man made a 911 call after accidentally shooting himself in the left hand. Upon arrival, the deputies interviewed the man before he was sent to Blake Medical Center.

The man said he was cleaning his Kahr 45-caliber handgun in his garage. He said he dumped the magazine believing he had unloaded the firearm and removed the slide stop pin. He pulled the trigger on the firearm to move the slide forward. When he pulled the trigger, his left hand was in front of the firearm and it discharged one round into his hand.

The deputies found the scene consistent with the man’s story.

Other detectives were sent to the hospital to reinterview the man.

TRAILER OWNERSHIP HAD PLENTY OF HITCHES Corner of 53rd Avenue East and U.S. 301, Bradenton Information only: A deputy was dispatched to the location in reference to a possible recovered stolen trailer. Upon arrival, a man was standing by a truck with a black trailer attached. The man who called police also was at the scene, and he said he actually owned the trailer, which he had purchased off his friend. While his friend still had it, the trailer was stolen. The man who called police said he had made more than $1,000 of modifications on the trailer but had not transferred the title yet. His friend eventually arrived at the location with the registration, which matched the VIN number on the trailer.

The friend confirmed he had sold the trailer to the man who called police. The man who actually had the trailer said he borrowed it from his friend. This friend also showed up at the site with a bill of sale. That man said he had been issued a new VIN at the DMV. The trailer was returned to the man who called police and the license plate was returned to the final man who showed up at the location. Photos were taken of all the paperwork and uploaded into the Sheriff Office’s crime scene website.

Tall task Hydroponic gardening could be key to funding veterans’ nonprofit.

bout a dozen women representing Gardeners Out East were sifting through thousands of hydroponically grown strawberries Jan. 11 during a tour of Sweetgrass Farms in Manatee County.

Bryan Jacobs, whose nonprofit Vets2Success now operates at Sweetgrass Farms, smiled as he watched the women, who couldn’t help pulling weeds.

“It’s what they do,” Jacobs said with a smile.

It’s the type of thing Jacobs covets as he attempts to build the hydroponic farm, which sits just north of University Parkway and east of U.S. 301 at 8350 Carolina St., into a major funding source that will allow Vets2Success to create programs to help veterans reintegrate into their communities.

To make it all work, Jacobs knows he will need a major volunteer effort, much that will come from veterans who want to give back. However, groups like Gardeners Out East might also play a part.

Last fall, Gardeners Out East was considering what to do with

money left over from fundraisers held to build the Blue Star Memorial at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. They decided to meet with Jacobs, a veteran who was deployed twice to Iraq. While he served as a battlefield paramedic with the Marines, he actually was with the U.S. Navy.

“Bryan came to our board meeting,” said Karen Eckert, president of the garden club. “He is very impressive, and we learned that what he says, he delivers.”

What he told them was he was determined to revive Sweetgrass Farms, which had been started in 2014 by landowners Jim and Kathy Demler. The Demlers decided not to continue farming the 10-acre parcel after spring 2018, but they agreed to allow Jacobs to use the land to benefit Vets2Success.

On Nov. 6, Jacobs and his volunteers started to clear the property, which had sat idle since the spring. By the time the Gardeners Out East toured, more than 10,000 plants were nearing maturity. Jacobs planned to start selling his produce to markets in another few weeks, and he hopes to open the farm to the public to self pick by the second week of February.

“He is doing it smart,” Eckert said.

One of the reasons Eckert and the garden club chose Jacobs was his connection to Lakewood Ranch. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida hospitality program on Lakewood Main Street and he now teaches his Vet2Chef program there.

Although he demonstrated his gardening knowledge during the Gardeners Out East tour, Jacobs’ expertise begins with his love of cooking.

“My grandfather (Herb Schaefer) was a cook during his 20 years in the Navy,” Jacobs said.

“Losing my brother was an eye opener. I wanted to help homeless, displaced and second-chance veterans. I’ve always had a service mindset. I want teamwork and camaraderie.”

After Jacobs left after his own six years in the Navy, he suffered from PTSD and at one time was homeless.

“It was like a whole new war had started,” Jacobs said. “I thought I mattered, but it seemed no one cared who I was. I was lonely and

In 2014, Jacobs’ younger brother and veteran, Kevin Jacobs, committed suicide.

“I refocused my energy,” Bryan Jacobs said. “Losing my brother was an eye opener. I wanted to help homeless, displaced and second-chance veterans. I’ve always had a service mindset. I want teamwork and camaraderie.”

In developing a plan, he found his love of food again. He started Vet2Success. He used his military background in the culinary world, teaching his Vet2Chef course like a 13-week boot camp. All 42 veterans who have entered the program have found a job in the food industry.

“Something about my life just clicked,” he said.

In clicking, though, he had to find a way to fund his efforts. The farm could be the answer.

“Nonprofits reach out to someone else for help,” he said. “But being a nonprofit is a business, and you’ve got to be creating opportunities. You need to sell something, create something.”

To be successful with the farm, Jacobs will need volunteers to do much of the manual labor. He believes veterans will step up to help, but he also hopes to find more volunteers like Greg Shuey.

Sarasota’s Shuey is a Home Depot installation manager who has been donating 40 to 50 hours of his time or more weekly to the farm. He said he simply loves working on a farm and he wants to help veterans.

“Greg is a godsend,” Jacobs said. “I had been praying about this project. Every time I pray, something amazing has hap-

“She’s on the business and structure side,” Jacobs said. “She has been handling strategic planning, revenue and marketing.”

The Gardeners Out East, meanwhile, might be doing some volunteer work themselves.

“They understand the simplicity of all this,” he said. “And they know they are changing lives through their effort.”

That effort might even include pulling weeds.

“If we could live on weeds, it would be great,” Jacobs said.

Group explores grief Tidewell program in Lakewood Ranch expands bereavement services for children and their families.

ourteen-year-old Zebastian Rodriguez Velazquez can dream again.

His dreams stopped after his great-grandmother, whom he called Mama Tete, died seven years ago. In September, his father, Tony Rodriguez, died of kidney failure.

Zebastian already was shy before his father died, but he became withdrawn.

His grief was quiet until November, when he and his 8-year-old brother, Zergio, and his mother, Violeta Velazquez, began attending Tidewell Hospice’s Club Blue Butterfly family grief program each Tuesday night at NewGate Montessori School in Lakewood Ranch.

The group counseling session for children was age specific — Zebastian shared his thoughts

with peers ages 12-18, while Zergio’s group was for kids ages 8-11.

“It’s helped me show my emotions and speak out,” Zebastian said. “I started having dreams again. For seven years, you go to sleep and you see nothing. I missed having dreams.”

Thirty-five families participate in the Tuesday night program, which starts with dinner and moves into a age-specific group therapy session during which participants complete activities to help them process their emotions.

Danielle Visone, a family grief program specialist for Tidewell, said the Tuesday night program filled up quickly. A needsassessment of the area showed more families need help, she said.

Tidewell will open a second night, Wednesdays, for families beginning Feb. 6 at the same location.

“It’s a safe place where the kids can talk about the person who died. There’s no other service like it in the county,” Visone said.

“They know we care about their thoughts, their memories, about the death. It gives them permission to talk.”

Visone said people often believe children do not grieve because they act aloof or continue with their regular behavior instead of

being sad. But Visone said children often cry themselves to sleep, or grieve in ways their caregivers may not see.

She said sometimes they feel guilty or sad, but they all need to process their feelings. She said avoiding those feelings can lead to mental health or behavioral issues as they grow older.

“Programs like Blue Butterfly give them that space to remember,” Visone said.

Velazquez, who works as a dean at Braden River High School,

said she learned of the pro gram through a friend and went because she did not know what else to do. After his father’s death, Zergio had not wanted anyone at school to know his dad had died because he didn’t want to be “different.” And yet, he was dealing with anger.

Zebastian had become reclusive, not wanting to talk or share his thoughts with anyone.

“I didn’t know how to help them,” Velazquez said. “It has helped us move forward. It’s very

Museum creates regional child-focused exhibit Lakewood Ranch businesses support museum vision.

The South Florida Museum is working to have the region’s only early childhood exhibit in science and natural history, and two Lakewood Ranch-based businesses are helping the dream become reality.

Lakewood Ranch-based Willis Smith Construction started work on the museum’s 16,000-squarefoot addition, called the North Education Center and Mosaic Backyard Universe, in January 2018. It now is about six months from completing the project.

Fawley Bryant Architecture of Lakewood Ranch has led the design for the North Education Center, which includes two primary components — an addition with movable classroom and exhibit space and a separate interactive area for children called the Mosaic Backyard Universe.

“The idea of the entire space is flexibility,” said Sarah Colandro, vice president of interior design for Fawley Bryant.

Colandro said the addition — both the education center and

the Backyard Universe — incorporates plenty of natural light. In fact, there are 350 panels of glass.

Colandro said the design is good for occupant health, promotes sustainability and creates diversity for the museum itself.

That feature is carried into the Backyard Universe, being designed by Br!ll!ant Creative Fabrication, where passers-by can see the interactive play space from Ninth Street West in Bradenton. Children can play in a treehouse, a “cardboard” spaceship and other props all created with learning opportunities in mind.

Ortiz said Willis Smith built a temporary plastic barrier and sucked air into the room where construction occurred. That kept dust and other particles from escaping.

“Normally, you separate the construction zone,” Ortiz said.

“The delicacy of working around museum artifacts is unique.”

Ortiz said the challenges have been unique, but his crew has been excited about the project.

“I’m leaving my fingerprint on something that’s going to be here 100-plus years,” he said.

Colandro said the South Florida Museum project is dear to the hearts of Fawley Bryant team members. The company’s founder, the late Rick Fawley, was instrumental in the early design of the project back in 2015, and the rest of the team sees this as a “legacy” project.

Contractors and museum officials expect the new wing to open in June. The museum is located at 201 10th St. W., Bradenton.

Lucy Pandeloglou, 90, of Sarasota, died peacefully at home Wednesday, January 9th 2019 surrounded by family.

Lucy, affectionately known as Lu, was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and is the spouse of Arthur Pandeloglou, Veteran of WWII now deceased.

he Out-of-Door Academy has taken a major step in its quest to bring its athletics and academics programs to a new high.

ODA on Jan. 8 opened its new Fox Field House at its Uihlein Campus in Lakewood Ranch.

The 12,300-square-foot building will be used for multiple sports, including basketball, volleyball and indoor tennis. Its main purpose, according to Head of School David Mahler, is to get all team practices done earlier, so students are not forced to do homework late at night.

Previously, ODA was forced to send multiple athletic teams to public facilities in Lakewood Ranch to practice at a decent hour. Now, everything can be done on campus, Mahler said, calling the building “an amazing, new addition.”

“We can do anything here,” Mahler said. “Multiple teams, multiple sports. When we have bad weather, our teams will not have to cancel practice. They will have a fantastic indoor facility to use. We can do fundraisers in here. There is really nothing that cannot occur inside the new Fox Field House.”

Mahler said the space, which is painted white and blue with the school’s logos and motto (“Respect. Integrity. Service.

Excellence. Responsibility.”) is large enough for three volleyball

games, or two basketball games, to be played simultaneously. A curtain can be dropped at center court, separating the play spaces and making sure no balls from one game fly into another.

Construction of the field house began June 23 and was completed Dec. 23. The building cost $2.5 million, and $1 million of that came from the Fox family — father Larry, mother Jennifer, ODA eighth-grader Zach, and ODA fifth-grader Sami. Larry Fox, who is the chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees, said the donation was the perfect way for the family to give back to the school.

“We have to get kids home at a decent hour,” Larry Fox said. “We had kids practicing until 9 p.m.

That does not work.

“In basketball for example, we have seven teams — boys varsity, girls varsity, boys junior varsity, girls junior varsity, girls middle school and three boys middle school teams (“Blue,” “Lightning” and “Thunder”). Those are seven teams we had to get in (to practice) after school, and we had to stagger that, so kids were getting home late. When you look at it like that, we simply needed another facility.”

ODA Athletic Director Kippie Crouch said the building will help with team preparation as well as individual skill development.

It is the second large athletics project the school has completed in the past 14 months. The school’s outdoor practice fields, which are used for sports such as football, soccer and lacrosse, were opened Nov. 29, 2017. Those fields, located adjacent to the school’s main buildings at 5400 Deer Drive, cost approximately $1 million.

The Fox Field House opening ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting and speeches from Mahler and Larry Fox. Zach Fox made the ceremonial first shot in the building’s history, then the boys and girls basketball teams had a free throw shooting contest, which the boys won. All the students launched miniature basketballs into the air in celebration.

Mustangs extend culture of winning — and fun B

That is what the Lakewood Ranch boys basketball team said it will remember most about its trip to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic from Jan. 2-4. Not basketball, but eating the little pockets of sugar, dough and magic, while listening to the smooth sounds of live bands.

“It was so delicious,” junior guard Christian Perez said.

It was almost even more memorable: One day, a street performer was looking for a “rich old man” to use in a comedy bit. The team urged coach Jeremy Schiller to volunteer, but he declined.

“Guys, I am neither of those things,” Schiller told them as he declined.

They did not care. They just wanted a laugh.

The 2018-2019 Mustangs know how to walk the line between fun and serious, just like their predecessors. In fact, the most remarkable thing about Lakewood Ranch is how much it has stayed the same, on the court and in the locker room, year after year.

After graduating their topthree players — Damien Gordon, Jack Kelley and Evan Spiller — the Mustangs would not have been blamed for taking a step back. They have not. As of Jan. 14, Lakewood Ranch is 10-4 after

a grueling first half of the season that included two big tournaments, the Kingdom of the Sun in Ocala in December, where the Mustangs went 3-1 to win the consolation championship, and the New Orleans tournament,

where they went 1-2 but faced teams like Bishop Loughlin High, MaxPreps’ top-ranked team in New York. (The Mustangs lost 56-31 to Bishop Loughlin.)

The Mustangs have a new big three now, and they mirror

the guys who graduated. Junior guard Christian Shaneyfelt is like Gordon, quiet but with great athleticism and a propensity for making impact plays. Senior forward Josh Young reminds me of Kelley, a dominant post presence on both sides of the floor. Junior Keon Buckley is charismatic like Spiller, and a consistent scorer, too.

In a road game Jan. 8 against rival Braden River High, the Mustangs proved their prowess.

Buckley scored a career-high 30 points, many of which followed Pirates’ turnovers. Braden River could do nothing offensively against Lakewood Ranch’s 1-3-1 zone. Young added 11 points, and Shaneyfelt had the exclamation point, a put-back jam (and a slight hanging on the rim) that sent the Mustangs’ cheering section into a tizzy.

There’s depth beyond that trio, too, like Perez, a spark plug who is constantly around the ball on defense. He had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists against the Pirates.

That the program’s culture, one where the players feel comfortable being themselves and having fun, has persisted despite the roster turnover is a testament to Schiller’s leadership.

He took over a program that was foundering and made it a consistent contender without sacrificing the kids’ ability to, you know, be kids.

“As the coach of a program, I love that words like ‘brotherhood’ and ‘culture’ are words we hear every year, and they mean it,” Schiller said. “That is important to me. At the end of the day, the wins and losses melt away. It is more about the relationships these guys have.”

So now, the Mustangs are concerned with playing their best as the playoffs approach (they begin Feb. 11), but they are also concerned with winning other things, like intrasquad “Mario Kart” tournaments, in which Young and senior forward Max Corsiglia are the favorites. They will poke at junior guard Luke LeCroy for not knowing what to do on his first airplane ride (“Right before we took off, he goes, ‘Should I have my mouth open or closed?’” junior forward Carter Chapin said).

I asked the group if there was anything else they wanted people to know.

“I love this team!” senior forward Dylan Wellard said.

The team hooted and hollered.

That more or less says it all.

You get to use so much skill in basketball. You can shoot over people, do moves on them, use your speed. You can do a variety of things to score.

My shooting. I shoot mostly 2-pointers, but I can make 3-pointers, too.

They mounted their bikes and cycled to Summerfield Community Park, where Have Gun, Will Travel was giving a community concert.

It was the first event for Summerfield and Riverwalk residents in the new Backyard Concert series being presented by Lakewood Ranch, Lakewood Ranch Community Activities, and

the Lakewood Ranch Community Fund.

“They sound really good,” Donna Messina said. “They should do this more often.”

More than 100 people spread out on blankets and in lawn chairs at the park’s soccer fields. Guests could purchase food and treats from Polpo Pizza Co. and Kona Ice. The next backyard concert series event will be Feb. 10 and feature a concert by The Music Makers.

tacy Rosenberg stood elbow to elbow with her daughter, Laney, and mother, Jayne Weissman, as the trio poured flour and other ingredients into a bowl and began to knead.

Was the consistency right? They thought so, but they smiled as they joined dozens of tables of other women Jan. 10 at The Grove restaurant’s ballroom for the “The Mega Challah Bake.” “(My mom) wanted to do a generational event and (Laney) loves to bake,” Stacy Rosenberg said of why they participated.

Each of 150 participants made her own challah bread dough and broke off an egg-sized piece as a reminder to give. The Jewish Women’s Circle Director Chanie Bukiet said Jewish women used to break off a piece of bread to bake and give to the temple priest.

Because there is no temple now, they do this symbolically as a reminder of God’s sustenance and to give to others.

Chabad of Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch’s Jewish Women’s Circle program hosted the event, which also included dessert, live music by Hasidic composer and singer Leora Nadtochv, dancing and lessons about making challah and its heritage.

“We’ve been in our county for a while and we were looking for a place where we could get involved. This is nice,” Jerry Gorski said.

akewood Ranch’s Victoria Ross had a quick answer Jan. 13 when she was asked why she attends the matches every Sunday at the Sarasota Polo Club.

“It’s paradise,” she said.

She had plenty of company as both sidelines were full to watch the match between The Internationals and Wrigley Media.

Neal sells more than Local students 1,000 homes in 2018 honored Lakewood Ranch’s Neal Communities announced it sold 1,061 homes in 2018.

Neal Communities plans to open six new communities during 2019 in the region.

In 2017, it set a record with 1,177 homes sold and 1,183 homes closed across the state.

In 2018, approximately 60% of Neal’s buyers already were Florida residents.

In 2019, Neal Communities plans to continue expansion in Sarasota County with more “costeffective new homes for working families,” it said in a release.
