t was getting late on the night of Sept. 10, and Maureen and Richard Curtis knew Hurri-

cane Irma was about to knock on the door of their Fourth Plaza East home in Mill Creek.

The wind was intensifying, and the couple started to wonder if they had made the right decision.

Plymouth Harbor nurse Nancy Nahrwold had an abrupt end to her vacation Sept. 8 with a call from her supervisor.

She was needed to help evacuate residents of the continuing care retirement community on Sarasota Bay. Nahrwold, who moved to Sarasota from the Midwest a few years ago, has seen plenty of blizzards.

Irma was her first hurricane.

Like many of her peers, Nahrwold tried to bring calm to Plymouth Harbor as she and the other Plymouth Harbor nurses and caregivers helped transport 27 residents to Aviva — A Campus for Senior Life, on Honore Avenue in Sarasota, about eight miles inland.

The evacuation to Aviva was part of a life care agreement between a group of senior living, nursing home and continuing care retirement communities in Sarasota.

Aviva CEO Jay Solomon said he and his staff began planning Sept.

6 to have space for Plymouth Harbor residents and to prepare the campus for a hurricane, including running generators on full load. In addition to the Plymouth Harbor residents and staff, Aviva also took in employees’ families

and some family members of their residents.

That turned a campus with normally about 300 people, including independent living residents in their own apartments, into a campus of about 600 people. The population of pets swelled, too, from 25 to more than 60.

“I think it went really well,” said Solomon. “As a community, we all came together. We all looked out for each other.”

Plymouth Harbor evacuees ranged in age from their 80s to a 105-year-old woman.

Because several residents were in wheelchairs or mostly immobile, including one who recently had hip surgery, Plymouth Harbor buses made multiple trips between the facilities.

It was an all-day transfer affair Saturday as Irma moved closer to Florida. “I’ve never been in anything like this before,” said Nahrwold.

HURRICANE IRMA

Whether to stay or go East County residents were perplexed over whether to evacuate with the hurricane approaching.

Their next-door neighbor, William Duda, left earlier Sept. 10 when Manatee County opened Lakewood Ranch High School as a shelter. Curtis and his family thought about going, but they didn’t.

“I worked so hard boarding up everything,” Richard Curtis said.

Irma didn’t seem to care. The former Category 5 hurricane, which had made landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4, was still packing power as it tore through Naples and headed north. It was losing power over land, but not enough.

By 10 p.m. Sept. 10, wind gusts greater than 50 miles per hour were howling through East County as the eye of Irma made its way northward. By 11 p.m., it was about 40 miles east of Lakewood ranch as a Category 2 storm, and although its shift had spared the area a direct hit, Mill Creek was getting pounded with bands of wind and rain.

Maureen Curtis said the sounds of the relentless attack in their backyard became “scary.”

Her face became taut as she thought back to that time during the night when she wondered whether Irma was simply going to blow them away.

“It was hard to breathe,” she said.

In front of their home, Maureen’s favorite oak tree, its root system turned into mush by a steady rain, pulled out of the ground, landing across their yard but sparing the house. Other trees began falling as well.

It was going to be a long night.

By the morning of Sept. 11, though, Richard Curtis was in his yard doing cleanup work. Despite the loss of their oak, damage was minimal, much like the rest of East County had experienced.

If another Irma heads his way, Richard Curtis said he is heading for a shelter.

“I think so,” he said, looking at his neighbors doing cleanup along his street. “It could have been a pretty bad situation.”

Maureen joined her husband, giving him a hug, and smiled.

“We’ve been blessed,” she said.

Next door to the Curtis family, Duda stood in the street as one of his neighbors, Brian Braun, cut through a fallen tree that blocked Duda’s driveway.

“That’s the only tree that fell (on his property),” Duda said.

“I should have taken down that other tree that has grown over the house.”

That one, however, still stands.

In retrospect, Duda said he was glad he went to a shelter. “Just for the peace of mind,” he said. “The way they were talking about Irma, I was worried.”

Although Irma scattered tree limbs, palm fronds and anything else not tied down, all over East County, most neighborhoods avoided serious damage.

The older section of Mill Creek, along Second and Third avenues, was hit harder than most.

PASSING THROUGH Hurricane Irma’s eye passed 40 miles to the east of Manatee County just before midnight Sept. 10 as a Category 2 hurricane.

EVACUATIONS Manatee County residents living in Level A (storm surge threat) homes were issued a mandatory evacuation order on Sept. 8. Those living in Level B homes were asked to voluntarily evacuate on Sept. 9.

POWER LOSS Florida Power & Light Co. reported 109,390 customers without power while Peace River Electric Power Cooperative reported 23,645 customers without power.

SCHOOLS The School District of Manatee County canceled all classes until Monday, Sept. 18.

SHELTERS Manatee County opened 26 shelters, hosting 25,128 evacuees.

SANDBAGS The county gave out 160,000 sandbags.

LOOTING Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells reported just one incidence of looting during a county curfew from 3 p.m.

there, and I went up in the attic and there was no damage,” he said. “I was extremely lucky.”

Late night on Sept. 10 and early morning Sept. 11, luck was center stage in East County. While Daily was fortunate, Jim and Jackie Sleter probably wish they hadn’t gone to Daily’s home to be in a safer place. The same tree that had caused only minor damage to Daily’s home, crushed their Ford.

Inside the home the night before, as the winds whipped against the walls, Daily heard a loud rumble. “It sounded like thunder with no flash,” he said.

“My wife, Rhona, knew better.

‘No,’ she said. ‘That’s a tree.’”

As Daily told the story, a group of his neighbors cut up the fallen tree and removed debris from his property. Among them was Mill

Creek’s Bob Weronik, who was hauling away huge pieces of tree trunk.

“My wife told me I didn’t need to buy a Kioti tractor,” he said, laughing.

After he finished at Daily’s, he would be off, with his Kioti, to help others in the neighborhood.

“All our neighbors are pitching in to help,” Daily said. “It’s what you do during these times.”

A few streets over, Mill Creek’s Brian Lewis was cutting up a tree that had fallen on his property.

“It’s just so wet out here,” he said.

“The roots came right out.”

But not without the help of some heavy wind.

“A deputy told me that maybe we had a mini tornado,” Lewis said.

While there were no reports of

tornadoes in the area, it seemed possible in Mill Creek and along State Road 64 where a stretch of the roadway, about a quarter mile east of the Lakewood Ranch Boulevard intersection, was littered with fallen trees.

Corrie and Alex Moor left their home in Summerfield to stay with family in Bridgewater, and when they returned home on Monday morning, they found a huge tree in their driveway.

“But we had no damage to our house,” Corrie Moor said. “Everything is just fine.”

The Moors stood alongside the tree with neighbors Haydon and Glenis Thomas and Bruce Sengstaken, who all live on Beeflower Lane. They were almost in a state of celebration.

Sengstaken, laughing, said he was expecting much worse.

“If this was a Category 5,” he said, “there wouldn’t be anything left of us.”

ara Golf and Country Club’s Julia Bosshardt, 80, could have gone to a shelter during Hurricane Irma, or to a neighbor’s house.

She instead decided to stay by herself.

She purchased packs of peanut butter crackers, plenty of water and “batteries to spare.” She was not worried and did not once consider evacuating the home she has owned since 2011, even though others thought she should have.

“I just figured I could do it,” she said. “I’m alone, but I felt secure. I felt like I had what I needed.

“As it turned out, I did.”

She fortified her house first, arranging her furniture in the hallway in case a window broke.

She had previously heard that block houses, like hers, were the most secure, and she had the roof replaced about three years ago. Those facts helped push any fears out of her mind. She slept through the storm. After surveying the lack of damage in Tara, she took a nap before going out on her front lawn, cleaning the leaves and branches off her front lawn by hand, by herself.

Those worried about Bosshardt need not have been. She can take care of herself, she said.

raden Woods was full of things needing to be picked up on Sept. 11, including leaves, branches and the spirits of the people who were hit the worst by Hurricane Irma.

Thankfully, it was also full of people ready to help, and many of them were teenagers.

Rin Graves, 17, showed up to help friend and Braden Woods resident Ian MacTavish, 17, while riding an all-terrain vehicle. The pair, alongside friend Ozzy Her-

rera, also 17, cleared logs out of MacTavish’s backyard, using the ATV to ride over pools of water that had accumulated. They had fun while doing it, too. While leaning on rakes they used to clear debris, MacTavish had a realization.

“What’s that painting, American Gothic?” he asked, wiping his forehead. “That’s what we look like right now.”

need. So, too, were Jake Supe, 16, and Devin O’Neill, 19, of Tara Golf and Country Club, who drove into Braden Woods to check on friends, but decided to help people they didn’t know.

“We’re moving all the debris out of here, all the big stuff, and moving it to the side of the road,” Supe said. “Once we get done here, we’re going to drive around the whole area and make sure everything’s all right.”

ylanger Appel was scared in the days before Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida.

In his mind, a gigantic wall of water was going to crash down on the state, ruining everything in sight.

It’s understandable. Appel is 5 years old.

On Sept. 9, in preparation for the storm, Appel and his family left their Braden Woods home to seek shelter with extended family north of State Road 70. His father, Ronnie Appel, said it’s hard to explain a hurricane to a child. He told him they needed to move fast and that listening would be important.

The younger Appel handled the situation as well as anyone could, and even slept soundly though the night. The pair, fans of the Denver Broncos, found time to watch football on the family iPad. They felt secure because the family was together. When they ventured outside on the morning of Sept. 11, Dylanger Appel’s fears of the area turning into Atlantis subsided.

eff Richards refused to remove the trees.

They litter his yard as they do all Braden Woods yards. But it’s a large part of the community’s appeal, he said.

He loves them so much, he’s even keeping them after one struck his home during Hurricane Irma.

“We were very fortunate just to have only one tree fall,” he said. “It landed on the roof, but it did not damage the roof. We were blessed.

Everyone is safe, that’s the important thing.”

Richards lives in the home with his wife, D’lisa, and was there Sept. 10 for the storm. The pair slept through the worst wind gusts. They have lived there since 1990, and this is the worst storm he (or anyone else in the area) has experienced, he said,

including the handful of storms that swept across the state in 2004. He had approximately the same type of damage after those storms as he did Irma, however.

Back then, two trees fell in his backyard, and Richards was again lucky that they did not strike the house, he said. Friends have since asked him whether he has considered removing the trees to eliminate any risk of it happening again, perhaps with a much worse outcome in terms of damage to the house.

His answer is always the same: “Absolutely not.”

“That’s why we moved out here,” Richards said. “We love it. The trees give it (Braden Woods) the character it has.”

Summerfield Park’s Jennifer Nzeza is a Florida native who has lived in Summerfield Park for the past 13 years with her husband, Malele Nzeza, and her daughter, Aurora Nzeza.

This was the family’s first time making use of their hurricane shutters.

“We did it this time because of the intensity and uncertainty of the storm — this is one of the scariest hurricanes,” Jennifer Nzeza said. “I think with Hurricane Harvey just having hit, the devastation in the Dominican Republic and just seeing the images of what [Hurricane Irma] has done already, it is making us want to be prepared.”

A pastor at The Family Church at Christian Retreat in Bradenton, Derstine had to double his prayers as Hurricane Irma approached Manatee County.

He had to worry about his church building and his home along the Manatee River, adjacent to Ray’s Canoe Hideaway on 15th Street East.

“We have huge glass windows at the church, and by the grace of God, no windows broke,” Derstine said. “There was a huge dent in the classroom building that was just a half an inch away from the big glass windows. If the dent had gone farther, the windows would have shattered.”

His home also was spared major damage.

“Big oak trees had fallen along the driveway,” Derstine said.

“This is one of the many happy days here,” Jensen told approximately 100 guests. “This is not just a road. It has wide bike lanes.

We raised the road right here to put a big tube under it. We’re going to have a school site over there. Why should kids have to walk across a four-lane road if they can go under it?

“This is a road intended to complement a lifestyle and be a good fit with the community. This is a unique piece of infrastructure.”

Besides becoming another north-south corridor for motorists traveling through Manatee and Sarasota counties, the Lorraine Road extension will provide access to the new Waterside at Lakewood Ranch development, which is being built on 5,490 acres and will include 5,144 homes in 12 neighborhoods.

Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer said the Lorraine Road extension, which is 3.54 miles, is a great example of the public and private sectors working together for the overall good of the community.

“We have learned how important interconnectivity is to public safety,” Harmer said. “While we are wondering what will (Hurricane) Irma do, we know anything we can do to improve access ben-

With various Sarasota County dignitaries in the crowd, Jensen made it clear he was frustrated Sarasota County hasn’t secured property rights so SchroederManatee Ranch could extend Lakewood Ranch Boulevard through to Fruitville Road, just like Lorraine Road.

The Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension, like the extension of Lorraine Road, is vital to the new Waterside at Lakewood Ranch community as well as providing motorists in the region another north-south corridor.

“We need the community’s support to get that project going,” Jensen said. “We can’t start it because we don’t have the right of way.”

Jensen jokingly referred to an advertising sign SMR has along Interstate 75. “We’re going to put the names and home phone numbers up there of those who are in the way,” he said with a laugh.

“It’s my understanding that it’s taking time to work through the issues,” said Sarasota County Commissioner Paul Caragiulo.

“Rex is like me, nothing gets done quick enough. But this is an absolute priority to get this thing built.”

Caragiulo said the Lorraine Road extension was another example of SMR’s great vision.

“This was just a fantastic effort,” Caragiulo said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to alleviate some of the distribution of traffic along Interstate 75.”

While Jensen made his pitch to get the Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension built, he celebrated the opening of the Lorraine Road extension.

Then I watched Brian McClure, a meteorologist for Bay News 9. Simply put, he said that if you had a fairly modern home, and you stayed inside, you would be fine. That didn’t mean you wouldn’t suffer property damage, but you weren’t going to suffer personal injuries. “You will get through this,” he said.

Right to the top of my list.

The worst of the storm finally, thankfully, came and went, my shutters stayed put and my can of tuna was solid. Like the rest of you in East County, I had survived Irma.

In the two years I have lived in Lakewood Ranch, hurricanes always have been someone else’s problem. They exist on television, kind of like a reality series for The Weather Channel.

Most of my experience with hurricanes has been watching some reporter standing on a deserted beach boardwalk, while behemoth winds distort the sounds going into his microphone.

SHOULDN’T HAVE LEFT THE LIGHT ON 600 block of 67th Street Circle East, Bradenton Warrant out of state: A deputy patrolling State Road 64 observed a silver Nissan SUV running a red light. The deputy followed the car, which drove through a fast-food restaurant drive-thru without stopping.

When the deputy activated his blue lights, the car accelerated out of the parking lot. The car turned into a motel parking lot where the driver fled the vehicle.

The deputy saw the man running on the second level of the hotel. The deputy waited for two other deputies to arrive. After checking the registration, it was determined the vehicle’s owner, a woman, was staying at the hotel. The deputies checked the woman’s room and saw the male hiding under the bed sheets. The woman said the man was her fiancé, The two stepped out of the room, where the first deputy positively identified the man as

the one he was chasing. It was discovered he had a full extradition warrant out of Ohio for theft.

NO POT LUCK 5000 block of Palm Aire Drive, Sarasota Petit Theft: A woman called the Sheriff’s Office to report a person stole the flower pots she had sitting at her front door for 30 years. The woman believed her neighbor could have stolen the pots based on a strange encounter she had with her a few days earlier. The woman said the neighbor took cuttings from one of her pots. When she confronted her, the woman asked for money for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The first woman said she told her neighbor that she could keep the clippings, but asked her to leave.

She did not see the woman take the pots and is not certain she took them. The woman just wants her pots back because they mean so much to her. A case number was provided for the victim. This case is being investigated further.

e lanie Johnson’s phone doesn’t usually get service at the Bay Street Publix in Sarasota.

It did on one fateful June day.

Johnson received a call from then-Lakewood Ranch High girls basketball coach Tina Hadley.

Johnson, previously an assistant coach at Booker High, had helped Hadley run her summer league team, and was planning on joining the Mustangs as an assistant coach, so the call was not completely unexpected.

What Hadley asked Johnson, however, was.

“She said, ‘I was wondering if you were interested in a head coaching job,’ and I said, ‘Sure, where?’ When she said Lakewood Ranch, I said, ‘What? Where are you going?’

“I had no clue she was leaving. I was completely shocked.”

Johnson jumped at the offer and accepted, though the move was not officially announced by the school until Aug. 31. She knew the type of program Hadley had built at Lakewood Ranch, and the culture surrounding it. Johnson said the experience feels like “walking into a dream job.”

The 32-year-old Johnson knows a lot about dreams. She started chasing her first one, playing basketball professionally, in elementary school. She would shoot baskets while waiting for her mother, Peggy Johnson, to finish her day as a high school teacher in Georgia. At the time, she used to say she wanted to play professional basketball until she was 85.

She was on a clear path to being a basketball lifer.

Eventually, she played professionally for three seasons, first for Besiktas JK of the Turkish Women’s Basketball League, then for teams in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and Austria.

Johnson was told by her former teammates at the University of South Carolina, where she was a two-time, second team, AllSoutheastern Conference player.

She would fit into the culture in eastern Europe, and that the transition would be easy.

Two Pirate athletes, one special friendship

ndrea Garcia left San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 28 with her mother, Naidine Marzan, and her brother, Sebastian Garcia.

Finding new friends was up to her.

With only 24 hours before she would try out for a volleyball club team, and two days before Braden River High was holding its tryouts, Garcia was in luck.

She just didn’t know it quite yet.

She was anxious because in Puerto Rico she spoke only Spanish, other than in English classes. She also had to deal with a change in culture. She said people in San Juan, a city of fewer than 400,000, often dance in the streets. And even though the city is large, the individual communities are tight-knit.

On the same day Garcia arrived, Jordan Radick landed in the East County area from Bozeman, Mont., because her father, John Radick, transferred to the area to take a construction job.

There was no language barrier for her, but she was still a bit intimidated. Bozeman is a small place, 45,250 people, and it’s surrounded by mountains. They don’t have an influx of visitors in

Bob C. Hi Bob, I’m glad you brought up this topic! If you can afford to give back to others it is important to give as efficiently as possible. For example: This could be as simple as gifting appreciated property such as stocks, real estate, or bonds.

Let’s say you had a stock that you bought for $50 per share and it has increased in value to $100 per share, you can arrange to gift the shares (not the money) to the charitable organization. You would get a federal tax deduction (subject to limits) on the whole $100 thereby avoiding the capital gains taxes that would have been incurred had you sold the shares and gave the cash to the charity.

I believe that all gifts to charitable organizations should be coordinated with your income tax planning, estate planning and investment strategy.

Here’s an example: we have a wealthy elderly client, with no living family members, that said that she wanted to give ALL of her money to a famous museum in New York City. We thought that to be a very nice thing to do for society BUT she won’t get a current federal and state income tax deduction since it is a gift at her death. We arranged for her attorney to draw up new documents that allow her to receive an

annual income from these assets as well as get a very large tax deduction while living. Then, at death, her wishes will be realized except that the museum will get more money because she had years of tax savings!

We had another client who was routinely gifting money for scholarships for aspiring actors that wanted to continue this practice after her death. We arranged for an attorney to do all the paperwork so that her private foundation could continue the practice after her death— and she got a tax deduction for the future scholarships while living.

It turns out Radick plays volleyball, too, and was also set to attend Braden River as a freshman and play on the club circuit. At the Orlando Tampa Volleyball Association tryouts, the 6-foot Radick met the 5 foot 6 inch Garcia, also a freshman, and an immediate friendship was struck. They bonded over volleyball, obviously, but also over being new to the area, and because of their similar personalities.

“She’s a really nice friend and a really good player,” Garcia said of Radick. “She’s the type of friend you want to have all your life. She will take care of you. If you need anything, she will give it to you.”

“Andrea is an amazing person, and really funny,” Radick said.

“She’s the type of person you want to hang with forever.”

nicknames, JoJo (Radick) and CoCo (Garcia). Radick got hers from a show she used to watch as a pre-kindergarten child, “JoJo’s Circus.” She liked it so much, she introduced herself as JoJo to her kindergarten class on the first day of school, and against all odds, it stuck. Garcia’s story isn’t as playful, but it makes sense. Her full name is Andrea Coral Garcia Marzan, and to simplify things, her family called her CoCo. It turns out the pair can play a bit, too. Pirates volleyball coach Matthew McElhiney said both athletes are key contributors already. Against Bayshore High on Sept. 6, they both had an impact, with Radick blocking shots thanks to her height advantage and Garcia setting up teammates and playing tough defense on opposing spikes.

They, plus another freshman, Emma DeCastro, are a large reason why McElhiney is giddy about the future of the program.

“It was definitely a pleasant surprise,” McElhiney said.

“Sometimes when you have players come in, you don’t know what to expect. You hope for the best, but you don’t count on them until they walk through the door. They both have good skill levels for their positions, and they bring us good volleyball knowledge for freshmen. It’s been a benefit, they are impact players for us.”

Together, their fears of moving to a new place have subsided.

With the volleyball team, they can be themselves. Garcia can dance when she wants, and Radick can allow her sense of humor to bubble to the top. The

outsider. On her first road trip in Turkey, she ate a postgame sub on a fresh, flaky roll. Crumbs from the sandwich fell onto Johnson’s lap, and she brushed them to the floor, to the horror of her teammates.

“Bread is sacred to them,” Johnson learned after the fact.

“They were offended that I had let the crumbs touch the floor. As you walk through the cities, you’ll see bread tied to trash cans.”

That’s so less fortunate folks can get some, and not let any morsel of it go to waste.

She won’t have to deal with anything like that with the Mustangs. There, her challenges will be more basketball-related, like continuing Hadley’s winning ways. Johnson has taken bits of strategy from each of her past head coaches and combined them with info from other coaches she reveres, such as the University of Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma.

She also remembers that her players are humans first, teenage humans at that, and athletes second. She knows that sometimes players will have problems in their personal lives or at home, and she’ll support them through everything, she said.

Johnson has at least one believer already, and it’s the coach whose sneakers she is now tasked with filling.

“She played at a high level, which is great,” Hadley said.

“I like her coaching style. I like her no-nonsense (attitude). I like that she has practice plans, which is very important. You can-

East Meets West brings business together KATIE JOHNS STAFF WRITER

It’s not all work and no play for the businesses in the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

For the past nine years, the two organizations have teamed up to create a trade show for members to show off their businesses and network from the east to the west of the area.

This year will be no different, but it will be later than expected.

Originally scheduled for Sept.

19, the event has been postponed because of Hurricane Irma.

“And the reason being is that Florida Power & Light uses Robarts Arena as a staging area and there are still hundreds of thousands of people without power, and they are busy trying to restore power to everyone,” LWRBA Executive Director Heather Kasten said.

The expo gives business people the chance to showcase their businesses to potential clients and customers from Sarasota and Manatee counties.

“I think they continue to come because it showcases their business to businesses out east that we may not know about,” Longboat Key Chamber President Gail Loefgren said.

An estimated 750 people are expected to attend this year, much like past years. Eight restaurants will offer bite-size samplings, and there will be wine and cash bars.

The first 250 guests will receive goodie bags.

“We do a lot of networking things, luncheons, but what’s great about the expo is that businesses get to put on a show and display products or services. It’s an opportunity to leave that night with some great leads to follow up on,” Kasten said.

Since its inception nine years ago, the expo has grown so much that it has changed venues multiple times. From the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, to the Municipal Auditorium to Robarts, the expo has gained a loyal following that increases its attendance.

In keeping with the raffle variation, attendees will have the chance to be entered into a raffle for two tickets on Southwest Airlines to anywhere in the United States. Attendees will have passport wheels, and if they visit every booth, they will be entered in the drawing, Kasten said.

The venue can hold 100 booths.

Last year, the expo was filled to over capacity, Loefgren said.

“We’ve got great commitment because people do know there is a little sense of urgency to get a booth,” Kasten said.

The event is open to those who aren’t vendors, as well.

“Even if you don’t have a booth, it can be a place to come and do business,” Kasten said.

Overall, Loefgren said it’s a good cooperative effort between the Business Alliance and Chamber of Commerce to have their members network. Kasten echoed those thoughts.

“That’s what this is all about, connecting these businesses with the intent that they grow their business by being a part of the expo,” Kasten said.
