Fellow Supervisor Alan Roth chided him for not telling anyone it was his birthday beforehand. “You robbed us of cookies,” Supervisor Bob Swiatek said.

Pearce attributed his good health to military care and “a good wife feeding me for 61 years.”

Waterlefe landscaping woes continue to grow Death of ligustrum trees causes more frustration.

The plight of four ligustrum trees may signal change in the Waterlefe Golf and River Club.

Dona Lasseter and Art Miller, who serve on the community’s landscape committee, stood in the median just past the community’s main entrance gate and pulled down a ligustrum branch with bronze-colored leaves. The ligustrum tree is one of four that have died since the spring, primarily because of a lack of irrigation.

The problem has since been fixed, but not before the trees, which grow between 8 and 15 feet in height, died.

“It shouldn’t look like this,” Miller said.

Each year, the Waterlefe Community Development District spends more than $200,000 on landscape-related expenses.

Supervisors — and residents — are questioning what steps must be taken to ensure plants, such as the ligustrum trees, are maintained properly.

The district’s current landscaper, Yellowstone Landscape, has serviced the district’s common area for about seven years.

The district has directed personnel from its management company, Rizzetta & Co., to inspect area

landscaping each month and to report their findings. The report indicates the followup on needed maintenance seems to be lacking, prompting supervisors to explore how best to manage landscaping services.

“Nothing gets resolved,” Supervisor Bill Strollo said of landscape deficiencies. “We are in a crisis, as far as I’m concerned, about landscaping.”

The CDD’s concern is an apparent gap in communication between the landscaper and the management company.

Yellowstone Branch Manager John Fowler said Yellowstone has performed well, and is aware of the problem. Fowler said Yellowstone used to receive field inspection reports from the management company within three days of a site visit. Since the spring, Yellowstone has not received them until three weeks later, leaving the contractor less than a week to address deficiencies, he said.

The company also had identified the irrigation problem with the ligustrums, but did not receive a response from district management for two weeks, a response needed for the landscaper to complete the work.

“The damage already was done,” Fowler said.

to a request for proposals put out by the CDD for future landscaping services. On July 24, supervisors picked ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance and Design of Venice to take over when Yellowstone’s contract ends Aug. 28.

At a July 17 meeting, supervisors also considered other options, such as having the field manager on site more frequently, delegating reporting duties to other Waterlefe staff members or having the Waterlefe Property Owners Association become more involved in managing the landscaping contract.

supplies inspect-and-report services only, but the contract could be amended to include management of the landscape contract.

CDD Chairman Ken Bumgarner warned that a change in a landscaper or even increasing the number of inspections by Rizzetta’s staff will not guarantee different results.

“The company coming in has to understand that there is an expectation and it’s probably higher (than at other places),” Bumgarner said. “Those (ligustrum) trees — they stick in everybody’s throat. Business as usual is not going to cut it. The process has to change.”

Supervisors tabled a decision about planting about 400 coleus plants around the perimeter of the roundabout in Waterlefe. The measure would be temporary until a permanent design for the roundabout is determined. Supervisors asked for more cost details before taking a vote.

Supervisors agreed to send out a communitywide notice about a vacancy on the CDD board.

PROJECT NOT YET AN OPEN BOOK County's plan to build a Lakewood Ranch library still not clear.

akewood Ranch resident Shannon Allen loves taking her children to the library.

In fact, it’s a pastime they do up to four times a week attending the chess club and educational programs or just flipping through book pages.

She frequents all the libraries in the area, whether in Sarasota or Manatee counties, but probably visits Manatee County’s Braden River branch most often.

Her children, Nicholas and Charlotte, know the librarians there by name.

But having a library in Lakewood Ranch would be an asset, she said.

“They definitely need it because of the boom in families,” Allen said at the Braden River Library as Nicholas, 6, played chess with a child he just met. “Libraries are a community center. Children need books. They need the tactile experience of it.”

Manatee County’s plans to expand the Braden River Library are in progress, but the county also anticipates constructing a new library in Lakewood Ranch within the next five years, said Cheri Coryea, director of Manatee County’s Neighborhood Services Department.

Designing the library is at least two years away, but there are a few features Coryea knows it will have based on feedback from the community. It will have top-notch children's areas with plenty of educational programming and will be designed with an open concept. It also will have meeting rooms, study space and room for computers and technology.

The Lakewood Ranch library will range from about 35,000 square feet — about the size of the existing Braden River Library — up to about 50,000, more comparable with the county’s largest library facility, Central Library.

“What we talked about is planning for the future,” Coryea said.

“If we were able to do a larger footprint, we might not be able to open it up all in the beginning.

That’s going to be a more centralized area in the next 10, 20 years.”

The county potentially could open the first floor and then expand offerings as the population warrants.

“We have space for 1,000 to 1,500 (people) in the upstairs room at the Central Library,” Coryea said. “That could happen in Lakewood Ranch.”

Coryea said design of the facility likely will have a “stand-out” feature of some kind, but still will be designed to blend in with the surrounding community.

old daughter, Scarlett, to library programs at least once a week, attended the second of two “community conversations” Coryea has hosted with Lakewood Ranch-area residents. She hopes the future library will have a vibrant children’s section and hopefully a cafe concept.

Menard spent her summers reading “Nancy Drew,” “Sweet Valley Teens” and any other books she could check out.

“Children have voracious appetites,” she said. “I love I can go to the library and there’s so many different books. I can expose my daughter to different literary styles and illustrations.

“I would use it more, if it were closer,” she said.

In terms of location, Manatee County does not yet have a specific site identified but knows, in general terms, it will be within the Lakewood Centre development, which is made up of two parcels between Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Lorraine Road, and between State Road 64 and State Road 70.

Per development approvals more than 15 years ago, Lakewood Ranch developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch has reserved roughly two acres for a library,

although no specific location was predetermined.

Coryea said the county hopes to have a site identified within the next 12 months.

“For completion, we’re still (saying) the next three to five years to be on the safe side,” Coryea said of timeline estimates.

“The problem is we have money for construction, but we don’t have the operating costs.”

Coryea said the project will evolve by first building a network of Lakewood Ranch library supporters who will be willing to volunteer or serve on a Friends of the Library group, typically responsible for fundraising.

Coryea said she hopes to have two more meetings with interested community members — one gathering in the Mill Creek area and another in the Myakka area.

Manatee County has not lessened plans for the Braden River facility as a result of the future Lakewood Ranch site.

Judy Mullen, assistant supervisor for the Braden River Library, said an East County library would absorb some of Braden River’s patronage, but not enough to change Braden River’s needs.

The branch issues about 300 new library cards per month.

BRADEN RIVER LIBRARY GROWS AS WELL Expansion of the Braden River Library has been divided into three phases. The first phase will be improvements to the office and book-sorting area and a roughly 1,500-square-foot addition primarily for youth programming. It would cost up to $1.5 million and should be completed within three years if it can be funded.

Manatee County Neighborhood Services Director Cheri Coryea said the county lacks about $250,000 for the project and will ask the Manatee County Commission to find the money in its capital budget.

A second phase would include the addition of more study rooms and another open area on the east side of the building.

Phase 3 would be a westward expansion of the library, but there are no immediate plans to proceed.

Coryea wants the plan documented in case it is ever needed.

Stephen Rodriguez emphasized his statement.

“I look forward to a long, long journey,” he said when asked about his new position as CEO and president of Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates Inc. Rodriguez was hired July 19 to replace Rosedale’s Bob Sullivan, who resigned in May after 10 months.

“When I came on board, it never was going to be for 10 to 15 years,” Sullivan said.

In contrast, Rodriguez said he is ready for the long haul after spending 18 years with the Florida Sports Foundation. He has been a senior vice president since 2010 and has been the director of both the Sunshine State Games and the Florida State Games.

“I see a great opportunity at Nathan Benderson Park,” said Rodriguez, who begins his new job Aug. 7. “I want to organize more events that will have an even greater economic impact.”

Rodriguez, 44, said it’s a perfect fit.

He grew up around sporting events as his father, Jose Rodriguez, is a former track and field coach who served as Florida’s Sunshine State Games director in

the 1990s and now serves on the executive board of the International Judo Federation.

“My big passion always has included an amateur sports component,” Stephen Rodriguez said.

“It’s been in my blood my entire life.

“Now I can take that to the international level. This will be a great stage to have those international athletes perform their talents.”

One of his first duties will be overseeing the park through the 2017 World Rowing Championships Sept. 24-Oct. 1.

“I look forward to working with the SANCA staff and board, as well as the Sarasota County government, in taking Nathan Benderson Park to the world stage,” Rodriguez said. “All eyes in the rowing community will be on us.”

While news that LA Fitness will be an anchor tenant in the plaza at the corner of State Road 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard was met with excitement in Lakewood Ranch, the impact carries more weight than just providing a muscle toning facility to the community.

“Having two strong anchors like Earth Fare and LA Fitness definitely will help The Green fill its remaining retail space with quality tenants and will speed up the leasing process,” said Kirk Boylston, president of Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty. “The more anchors you have, the better off you are in attracting the other tenants you need.”

Tavistock Development Co., announced July 19 that LA Fitness will lease a 34,000-square-foot space in its The Green project.

The Green is a 525,000-squarefoot, mixed-use development with a focus on health and fitness industries.

The project is part of Lakewood Ranch developer SchroederManatee Ranch’s larger Collaborative Opportunities for Research and Exploration biomedical park, known as CORE. The Green is the CORE’s first project, but Boylston said other developments will be announced in the near future.

“We have another user who is going to construct a 60,000-square-foot corporate headquarters facility that should break ground in September,” Boylston said. “We’ll be announcing that shortly. We also have a facility that is approximately 50,000 square feet that is related to medical treatment and research that hopes to start construction by the end of the year.”

Boylston declined to disclose that facility as well, but he said other announcements could be on the way as well.

“We’re having conversations with other companies,” he said.

“Things are moving along.”

LA Fitness is expected to open by summer 2018. The Earth Fare building is under construction.

“A high-quality fitness center is an ideal ingredient to creating vibrant, mixed-use projects,” Skipper Peek, senior vice president of commercial development for Tavistock Development Co., said in a media release. “We believe LA Fitness is best-inclass and a great addition to The Green and the planned 4 million square feet of nearby office and biotech space.”

Bill Horner, LA Fitness’ senior vice president and chief real estate officer, said in a release that the location is perfect for the franchise and will be convenient for customers and allow them to maximize their memberships.

“That retail and housing piece is an integral part of the CORE project. It’s not just the shopping center we put there because it’s a good corner.”

spoke for itself. “I’ve eaten at all our caterers,” Hartley said, noting the athletes were going to get first-class food.

With the quality of food assured, Hartley said it was a matter of education.

“These are elite athletes and (the caterers) have a certain criteria to meet,” Hartley said. “FISA presents its guidelines, and a sample menu, which is about 10 pages — best practices for rowing performers.”

Hartley said the athletes eat cleanly with lots of salads, lean meats, proteins, bread and pasta.

She emphasized that many of the athletes had quite a different diet, though, because they compete in divisions that are determined by gender or weight.

“It’s pretty complex, but the foods are basic,” she said.

Klauber is familiar with the athletes’ dietary needs, but she

also wants to give them a culinary thrill when she is able.

“We have Tommy,” she said of her husband and chef Tommy Klauber. “We have pride and we want the athletes to say that haven’t had better food anywhere they’ve been in the world.”

Jaymie Klauber said she would speak to representatives from each of the teams she will serve to check for anything special they might desire.

“We have Ireland,” she said. “If they want corned beef, they can have it.”

Besides Ireland, Klauber knows she will be serving teams from Germany, Lithuania, Australia and Canada. The complete hotel lineup is not yet set.

What is set is the basic menu.

“They eat so much bread you wouldn’t believe it,” Klauber said.

“And so much fruit.

“They eat a whole lot of grains,

cold cuts at every meal and lean meat dishes. They want things very plain so we have to dumb down (in terms of sauces).”

Since the meals will be spread out over a three-hour window, Klauber said the meals won’t be served buffet style.

“Fresh from oven to plate,” she said.

Klauber said she enjoys catering sporting events and has some smaller scale experience setting up kitchens at Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.

“I’m enjoying this,” she said.

“This is something different and it’s made the summer a little more exciting. I’m also incredibly organized. I have a plan.”

Rowers from Ukraine will be the first to arrive at Nathan Benderson Park on Sept. 7. So far, Lithuania is scheduled to be Fête’s first team to arrive, on Sept. 13.

Facing a daunting challenge, Jaymie Klauber offered a silly solution.

She knows the world-class athletes who are participating in the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park must consume at least 6,000 calories a day. The rowing competition runs from Sept. 24-Oct. 1.

“I could feed them Danish,” she said, laughing. “But you can’t.”

Klauber’s Fête Catering at the Polo Grill and Bar is one of four catering services that have the task of handling meals for the athletes. The other three are Mattison’s, Der Dutchman and Milan catering. Fête will feed athletes at five area hotels.

“We’ve not done something this long and this big,” Klauber said. “This is the most complicated (event) we’ve done. We will be setting up five kitchens in hotels for two weeks. We will prep the food (at Polo Grill and Bar) but it will be cooked on site.”

Klauber said they will double the amount of food they put out for a single person.

“I am so excited and ready,” she said. “This has been a long time coming.”

Fête submitted a request for proposal four-and-a-half years ago to the World Rowing Federation, which is know as FISA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron).

“We wanted local,” said Kristen Hartley, the athlete services and volunteer manager for the World Rowing Championships. “We also asked, ‘Can they handle the capacity?’”

It happens every day during the course of his job as manager at Southwatch Seahorse Farm in Myakka City.

“Their eyes operate individually,” he said of the sea horses, who lock an eye on him whenever he enters the room. “And when you walk into the room, they will follow you until you feed them.”

That’s fine with Woods, an Evangel University biology major who has grown accustomed to being surrounded by sea horses.

He took over as manager in 2010, a year after the facility opened, and breeds, distributes and cares for the sea horses out of a six-car garage with just one other employee.

The facility is made up of 18 tanks varying in size from 400 gallons to 1,200 gallons. An average retail price for a sea horse is about $60.

While it promises to be a good business, Woods said the Southwatch Seahorse Farm has its ups and downs.

“It’s still a struggle, it really is,” he said. “There are some days when it’s breezy and some days where it’s utter defeat.”

Now Woods keeps watch on sea horses that produce between 300 and 800 babies every 14 days.

They are one of the few species where the male gives birth.

The survival rate is low, though, although Woods would not discuss specific numbers. Sea horses live three to five years in captivity.

“Studying sea horses in captivity is new, so nobody has really cracked the code,” he said.

they take from the wild,” Hodo said.

“I believe the survival rate of sea horses in the wild is about 1 to 3% that make it to adulthood.

When a sea horse is born they are defenseless, fully formed, tiny sea horses with no parental care, so they are on their own. There are lots of international threats to sea horses.”

When sea horses make it to adulthood, Woods said they can be wonderful to watch.

“They are such cool animals,” he said. “They are all unique ... where they like to hang out in the tank, how they approach their peers, their recognition for the person who feeds them.”

Southwatch’s biggest client base is made up of tropical fish stores, mostly in the U.S. The stores cater to customers wanting to stock their home aquariums. However, individuals do purchase sea horses from Southwatch online.

Southwatch, meanwhile, continues research to find what tank environments, temperatures and foods are best. Woods said it’s hard to collect data because so many species exist.

Woods’ only employee is Ben Wiley, 22, who studied pipefish, a cousin species of sea horses, at the University of Tampa.

As both Woods and Wiley work at the breeding aspect, they have come up with some interesting mixes in terms of color and patterning. One breeding “mistake” produced a sea horse that was sold for $450.

“His name was Oreo,” Woods said. “He was a cool-looking sea horse.”

No writer’s block for former NSA exec

T

he secret is out.

Joseph Harb Jr. can communicate with the world.

It wasn’t long ago that Lakewood Ranch’s Harb couldn’t even communicate with his wife, Linda. Well, about his work, anyway.

A line out of his bio says Harb, who worked 39 years with the National Security Agency, “managed large complex analytic organizations which produced extremely high-value political and military intelligence relating to every region of the globe and a broad variety of topics.”

During a run as a bartender once I made a cocktail that turned from blue to green.

In Harb’s own words, he did work that “could change the course of history.” He just couldn’t tell anyone about it.

At his Edgewater community home where he has lived for 18 years, the 75-year-old Harb explained his standard line, when people asked about his occupation, was “I work for the Defense Department.”

These days, Harb has done a

Apparently not.

In keeping with NSA regulations, Harb packed his 389 pages and shipped them to his former headquarters at Fort Meade in Maryland. Although the book is, indeed, fiction, Harb wrote about real-world intelligence techniques that he wasn’t sure would meet with approval.

It took less than 45 days for the NSA to sift through the material and send it back. Harb picked up his mail and found the return from NSA wrapped in tape that might as well have been made of stainless steel wire. He struggled to rip the package apart.

This couldn’t be good.

Inside, though, he found his material virtually untouched.

He was amazed. “They approved everything,” he said.

He wasn’t so lucky, though, when he ran the material past Linda, who has been married to him for 51 years.

Linda’s advice was simple. He had too many bullet lists for a nuclear spy hunt novel. Yes, she was right. He wanted to build

a lot of educational reality into his fiction, and that meant more bullet lists than bullets. NSA employees, after all, don’t carry guns.

His colleagues and friends were kind, but they told him his writing was “stiff.”

So he took advice and added more dialogue to his story. He also made changes. More than 1,500 of them.

He was pleased with the outcome. The book, which took 10 months to complete, was ready.

After self-publishing the book, he is learning the promotional aspects of being a writer.

Whether it succeeds, Harb is fortunate in one respect.

He can talk to his wife about it.

Nancy Janus was impatient as she sat on her “trike” just waiting.

Her husband, Brian Berry, was in the house, fetching a brace to put on his 71-year-old wife’s right leg.

Her husband emerged, brace in hand, and carefully held her leg while he planted it into her shoe.

Janus let out a quiet “ow” as he wrapped the brace in place. Finally, she was ready.

“Anything to be cycling again,” she said.

The trike moved forward, and Janus was off, cruising down her street in River Club and around the cul-de-sac. All the while, she wore a crescent moon grin.

After Janus was struck by a car on March 14, 2012, at the opposite end of the very same road she now rides, she wasn’t sure she would ever again experience the happiness of riding a bike.

The crash left Janus with an incomplete spinal cord injury, which means it was not severed, and in this case, “not even nicked,” Janus said. Instead, it compressed and swelled.

“It looked like a rolled-up carpet on a staircase,” Berry said of the MRI. Janus spent 28 days in intensive care and was comatose for 10 of those days. She’s not paralyzed now and can slowly move her legs and arms, and even stand at the sink to brush her teeth. That is a recent development, and one of which Janus is proud.

“The doctors were loathe to make predictions,” Berry said, on what his wife would be able to do.

The doctors were surprised by her relearning to walk small dis-

tances, and by her returning to teach human development classes at Eckerd College. They were shocked that she’s now returned to cycling, albeit not on her normal bike.

Berry said they wouldn’t be if they knew her.

She was a member of the Sarasota-Manatee Bicycle Club, and once rode 100 miles a week. Her first-ever big ride wasn’t with the club, but something she did on a whim in 2001. While waiting for a dentist appointment, she read about a bike race from Amsterdam to Paris that would raise money for AIDS research.

Janus raised $5,000 for the trip through donations and raffles, and off she went, by herself.

The first day was 91 miles over Holland’s cobblestone streets.

The weather was dismal, and she roomed with a woman who snored so loudly, Janus had to lie under the bathroom sink to get away from the rumbling.

Despite the circumstances, she had such a great time that she made it her passion.

For a time following the accident, Janus was convinced she would never ride again, though

not because of any physical limitations. Adapted tricycles are expensive.

The Kelly Brush Foundation gave Janus a “try it” grant, giving her the money to rent a tricycle for a month.

Janus needs her husband’s help with her brace, and getting in the trike and back in her wheelchair.

It’s tough for her. She has always been an independent woman and now her husband has to scratch her neck if she has an itch. It’s the small things that sometimes frustrate her.

When she’s riding, she forgets everything else. For her, the tricycle has been a dream and she hopes she has a good shot at getting a full grant.

Eventually, she would like to help other people with disabilities. The more people who see her riding down the street, the more they’ll believe they can pursue their passions as well, she said.

“I want to encourage others to stay positive,” Janus said. “I could focus on what I can’t do, but I would just be miserable and not getting any better. It’s important to find the bright side.”

Paralympic team’s main goal: To inspire

he cheers from the Premier Sports Campus crowd came in waves.

At kickoff of the U.S. Paralympic Soccer Team’s friendly match against Canada on July 21, you would have thought you were witnessing a Men’s National Team game.

The two countries’ flags were presented, and the squads dove headfirst into what turned out to be a fantastic game.

But there was so much more to what the crowd witnessed that night than a game.

To be eligible for the U.S. team, players must be ambulant, but have either had a stroke, have cerebral palsy, or have a traumatic or acquired brain injury.

Watching the players overcome their own particular adversity, I found myself emotional.

The crowd was made up mostly of the families of Lakewood Ranch Chargers players.

The Chargers accompanied the U.S. and Canadian players onto the field and held the flags. It’s a neat way to get kids involved and engaged. The families I talked to were ecstatic to be there, not just for the soccer, but to gain perspective.

The Schwenk family, with mother Heather and her 9-yearold daughter, Taylor, was no exception. Taylor was there in uniform, alongside her Chargers friend, 10-year-old Annalise Miller.

“We’ve watched the Paralympics on TV,” Heather Schwenk said. “I thought this might give (the Chargers) a better understanding of differences in people and how to persevere and do your best, no matter what the odds are.

“It’s a teaching opportunity for the kids, not just about the sport, but about life.”

Taylor Schwenk and Miller were excited to watch the players’ shielding ability, they said.

One of the best at that particular skill, at least in that night’s game, was starting forward Seth Jahn.

Jahn, who lives in Lakeland, suffered injuries in 2010 fighting insurgents in Afghanistan. His family drove out for the game, and could be heard screaming his name from across the field.

It’s the first time the Jahn family had seen him play in person in 10 years. It was a special moment for him and he also expressed gratitude for all the families in attendance who hoped to inspire their kids.

“That’s probably one of our biggest motivations,” Jahn said.

“It’s what differentiates us from the rest of the U.S. Soccer senior teams. There’s a lot of inspirational stories and a lot of things that can motivate. It’s incredible to have the families, friends and fans come out and support us like this. We love it.”

The seven-a-side nature of

the game kept the action moving, and there was some darned good soccer played at Premier Sports Campus. Down 2-0 with less than 10 minutes to go, the U.S. rallied, first with a goal from Andrew Bremer, then, after a blizzard of shots that all hit iron, with a goal from Nick Mayhugh that tied the score. The fans loved every second as the game finished in a 2-2 tie.

After the game, Jahn and his teammates stuck around, taking photos with the fans. He signed an American flag for representatives of the Special Olympics.

After each interaction, Jahn thanked the people just as much as they thanked him.

For me personally, the night was a reminder to be strong and to carry on, even when things get tough. Of course, in my world, “tough” means a source backing out on an interview, or having to write a few extra stories in a month. For Jahn and so many others, “tough” is much more severe. I can only hope the Chargers and other young people in attendance benefited from the same lessons I did.

University Place’s Ric Romanoff and 16-year-old Malcolm Moniz both have loved airplanes since childhood and were excited to see thousands of aircrafts in Oshkosh, Wis.

During his July 24 flight, University Place resident Ric Romanoff needed a break, so he handed the controls over to his co-pilot.

It was time for 16-year-old Malcolm Moniz to fly.

The pair had taken off in their homebuilt Vans RV 12 aircraft earlier that morning from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and were early in their ninehour flight to Oshkosh, Wis., the site of the internationally known AirVenture event, which runs July 24-30.

Romanoff, a 69-year-old, lifelong flight enthusiast, is a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, an organization that encourages flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft. Its local Chapter 180 operates out of the Sarasota-Bradenton Interna-

tional Airport.

Sarasota’s Moniz, a student at Pine View School, is a member of the EAA’s Young Eagles program, which encourages children to become involved in aviation.

With his participation in Young Eagles and its offshoot, the Teen Aircraft Factory of Sarasota, Moniz was selected to participate in the Advanced Air Academy camp, which overlaps with the AirVenture event.

While Romanoff had planned to let Moniz handle the flying out of Sarasota, poor weather dictated the experienced pilot take the controls. Now, though, it was time.

“They have to learn sometime,” Romanoff said by phone during a pit stop in Albany, Ga. “Here was an opportunity for that.”

While Romanoff was comfortable allowing Moniz to take over, he continued to monitor the controls.

“I’m not napping.”

“It’s important because many youngsters need to find some direction,” Romanoff said. “They are our future. I’m not sure that as a society we do such a great job preparing them right now. I have to help in any way I can.”

Romanoff has confidence in those who participate in the Teen Aircraft Factory program. After all, they built the aircraft they took to AirVenture.

Early in their trip, Moniz was enjoying the experience.

‘It’s like you’re doing your own air show all the way up there,” he said. “Nothing fancy, though, except a tight turn to evade a cloud every now and then.”

The show really begins when they arrive.

“It’s the largest air show in the world,” Romanoff said, noting more than 10,000 aircraft will be on display. “It’s a place for builders to show off their work.”

They will be showing off their Van’s RV 12, which was built by a group of nine kids who completed the aircraft about a year ago.

Moniz didn’t help build this particular plane, but he and five other kids have spent every Saturday morning since January building a new plane.

“It’s a grown-up Lego set,” Moniz said of building a plane.

“They give you pictures and instructions and you have to decipher it.”

members started with the Young Eagles, a program in which EAA pilots take children to the skies for their first flight in an experimental aircraft.

Romanoff said EAA members felt they were successful stirring youngsters’ interest in aviation with the Young Eagles, but they weren’t giving them an outlet to pursue. The Teen Aircraft Factory was founded just more than three years ago.

Adult mentors, like Romanoff, work with the children to oversee each step of the assembly. Groups check each other’s work, as well, to ensure blueprints are followed correctly, Romanoff said.

His mom, Janna Fairchild, said there is nothing her son would rather do on a weekend.

“He loves it so much,” Janna Fairchild said. “It’s something that really energizes him, motivates him.”

Janna Fairchild said she doesn’t worry about her son flying in a homebuilt aircraft constructed by kids.

“It’s a level of comfort I have with the pilots who work with the program,” she said. “Their resumes are impeccable. There’s is a level of trust there. You want your child to have an opportunity like this.”
