Pool toys are not allowed in the GreyHawk Landing pool, and that annoys some residents.

Pool rules debated in depth GreyHawk Landing residents voice frustrations with pool toy restrictions.

GreyHawk Landing resident Rachel Marcus said her children are getting shortchanged when it comes to enjoying the summer at her community’s pool.

She said the community’s restrictions on pool toys has caused her to take her 4-yearold, Alexandra, and 1-year-old, Nathaniel, elsewhere.

“A whole summer has gone by and we have barely enjoyed the pool,” Marcus said.

The pool restrictions, estab-

lished by the GreyHawk Landing Community Development District, prohibit the use of pool toys such as rafts, plastic pails and diving sticks.

GreyHawk Landing’s CDD Chairman Ollie Kyte sympathizes with the residents, but remains firm in his belief that allowing children to bring their toys to the pool would be an “absolute disaster.”

He said they are aware of the rules, and they agreed to adhere

to them when they moved to the community.

“The purpose for not allowing toys is that if you have individuals who are there who don’t have children, they want to have a nice, relaxing day,” Kyte said. “Some children are not as respectful of others as they should be.”

Marcus said the rules are “absurd.”

She said Nathaniel doesn’t walk yet, and she likes to take him into the pool on a raft. “The raft is a safety thing,” she said. “It’s not a fun raft that you’re going to get wild on. Why is it working that (pool toys) are permitted in other communities but not here? What is happening?”

While some residents in GreyHawk Landing are frustrated by the pool rules, the rules have not changed. Toys and floatation devices always have been prohibited at the community’s two pool areas, but residents feel that the guards at GreyHawk Landing have been cracking down in terms of enforcing them.

GreyHawk Landing resident Lexi Rossi moved into the community about three years ago when her son, Colton, was a 3-year-old.

Rossi remembers bringing toys to the pool when the pool restrictions were not a topic.

“I used to bring his favorite ImagineXT characters and his Batman doll to the pool when Colton was little just so that he would have something to do because he couldn’t swim,” Rossi said. “This was not something that people talked about back then. Everybody just minded their own business.”

Nicole Truax, a GreyHawk Landing parent, would like the rules to be relaxed.

Truax said when her daughter, Lily, now 7, was a toddler, she used to bring toys to the pool. She said it wasn’t an issue.

“I never knew that you couldn’t have small toys there because the little things didn’t used to matter,” Truax said. “Now, it seems like with the guards going downhill, everybody is having to fight for every small thing.”

Marcus said the CDD just needs to use common sense. She said there is a lot of difference between throwing a football in the pool letting a baby float on a small raft.

Kyte said for now, the pool rules are staying put.

“Right now, unless there is a compelling need to change the existing rules, I don’t see us changing them,” Kyte said.

“However, if new board members come on and they have a difference of opinion, they can change the rules as they please.”

STEADY GROWTH Lakewood Ranch medical research project gains momentum.

ess than two years after its launch, Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty’s planned 265-acre, health care- and life sciences-themed business park has landed a second medical-related project.

Optimal Outcomes LLC has joined Mercedes Medical at Collaboration Opportunities for Research and Exploration, known as CORE, and hopes to complete its two-story medical office building, HealthPark, by the end of 2018. Optimal Outcomes expects to begin construction on its 42,000-square-foot project by the end of this year.

Mercedes Medical announced in July it was coming to the park and will begin construction in October.

“We think this building will fit in well,” said Ken Hughes, president of CNK Realty, a Lakewood Ranch commercial real estate brokerage specializing in medical office properties that is leasing HealthPark. “Lakewood Ranch meets a lot of needs for infrastructure and housing and amenities, and it’s growing by leaps and bounds,” Hughes said.

The two announcements could begin a domino effect.

“The CORE project is definitely a momentum project,” said Kirk Boylston, Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty’s president. “The more people we have in there, the more the project will just accelerate, especially since they’re good local companies that produce products and services that are applicable to the CORE project.

It’s the perfect start for us.”

The HealthPark building’s 10,000-square-foot surgery center will be the first multi-specialty operating facility within the community.

Hughes said the HealthPark space is being marketed for roughly $25 per square foot on a triple-net basis, with operating costs of about $8.50 per square foot.

While that rate is higher than typical office space in Sarasota and Manatee counties, which Lakewood Ranch straddles, medical office space often is specialized and requires higher finishes and a higher level of interior build-out.

HealthPark also will have a covered drop off area for patients, a design that is typical for medical offices.

To compensate for the elevated rent rate, Optimal Outcomes is providing tenants an average of $55 per square foot of tenant improvements, money that is invested in a tenants’ space at the outset of occupancy and amortized throughout the course of a lease. Tenant improvements for office space are often less than half that amount.

the surgery center space could go as high as $200 to $300 per square foot, Hughes said, depending on the type of use.

“The shell and the common areas of HealthPark will be constructed to a much higher finish than a typical office building,” Hughes said. “And that’s because medical buildings usually have more traffic than a normal office and so you need to build them to withstand more people coming in and out.”

HealthPark at Lakewood Ranch marks the latest in a series of Optimal Outcomes’ medical projects.

In all, the company has developed in excess of 1 million square feet.

Previous developments have included a 50,000-square-foot building for Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute in Fort Myers; Tradition HealthPark One and Two in Port St. Lucie, totaling 102,000 square feet; a 39,000-square-foot building in Brandon; and a pair of projects in Tampa, according to the company’s website.

Meanwhile, health care equipment supplier Mercedes Medical expects to break ground within 60 days on a new headquarters of a 55,000-square-foot building that will consolidate three Manatee County facilities.

Alex Miller, the company’s CEO, said Mercedes Medical spent more than a year evaluating potential sites before deciding on a $10 million building in CORE. “We really liked the idea of being a part of the new park, and we want to develop something beautiful and something that’s also symbolic, in terms of growth, of where we’re going as a company,” Miller said.

In all, a trio of new developments — including an Earth Fareanchored retail center — will bring nearly 250,000 square feet to CORE by the end of 2018.

HealthPark at Lakewood Ranch and Mercedes Medical’s project follow a third development, a 150,000-square-foot retail center being developed by Orlandobased Tavistock Development Co. In addition to organic gro-

cer Earth Fare, the project will be occupied by LA Fitness and a series of health-related merchants and restaurants.

Tavistock, which spent $8 million in May to acquire 42 acres within CORE, also plans to develop a 294-unit apartment complex there.

“To attract users to CORE, Lakewood Ranch Commercial determined there had to be adequate amenities in place,” Hughes said. “The whole concept is to develop a very walkable project

with open space and in which restaurants and other retail meshes well.”

In all, Flad Architects of Wisconsin is designing CORE to contain as much as 4.5 million square feet, which will be developed over two decades.

Ultimately, Lakewood Ranch Commercial hopes to cluster enough life sciences uses and businesses to attract a university or research hospital to CORE.

Fort Hamer Bridge opening delayed A celebratory run across the Fort Hamer Bridge will proceed as planned Aug. 26, but the bridge itself will not open to traffic until Sept. 23.

Trudy Gerena, a spokeswoman for the project on behalf of Manatee County, said summer rains caused the month-long delay.

“We had over 38 inches (of rain) from June to mid-July and Tropical Storm Emily came through. It slowed down production,” she said.

Contractor Johnson Brothers Corp., of Orlando, still will need to install guardrails and handrails on a portion of the bridge, give texture to the decks and stripe the roadway.

Museum honors Snooty the manatee The South Florida Museum has scheduled the Snooty Memorial Open House for Sunday, Sept. 10, at the museum.

The event includes free admission to the museum. Doors will be open from noon until 5 p.m.

Sarasota architect Guy Peterson said his vision for the project began in 2010 when he began viewing architecture for rowing towers from across the world.

Sarasota park hosts the 2017 World Rowing Championships Sept. 24-Oct. 1.

The six-level tower will host officials, the media and fans during the championship. Peterson said during the tour the structure is one of the most memorable he’s created.

“It exceeded my expectations,” he said. “The flexibility of it is something I’m really proud of.”

Each side of the building offers floor-to-ceiling windows so guests have near-endless views of the park. The top 4 feet of each window is made of fretted glass to reduce heat from the sun. A narrow strip of lighting runs the length of the ceiling and western wall to coincide with the finish line for 2,000-meter rowing races at the course.

“I like the scale of building,” Peterson said. “It becomes a beacon for rowing and, hopefully, for the community.”

Rowing event shrinks hotel space Rowing Championships help area hotels during a typically slow time.

Area hoteliers aren’t quite ready to hang up “no vacancy” signs during the 2017 World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota from Sept.

24 through Oct. 1, but it’s getting close.

The Hampton Inn & Suites at Lakewood Ranch has just a few rooms available each day of the event. Michelle Rhoden, the hotel’s front office manager, said those rooms are filling quickly.

Rhoden said for the hotel business, September is a perfect month for the area to host a big event.

“This is wonderful,” she said.

“This event is going to bring thousands of people to the area and increase business for everybody. It’s not just the hotels, but the restaurants, too. We stay pretty busy, usually with at least 80% capacity, but we will definitely have more people than during that time last year.”

Fairfield Inn & Suites Sarasota Lakewood Ranch is down to four rooms on some of the days during the event, according to front desk manager Lynn French. French said the hotel began preparing for the event more than a year ago.

“It has been crazy,” French said.

this time of the year because it is really going to help the economy.”

Ashleigh Gonzalez, general manager at the new Hyatt Place in Lakewood Ranch, said her hotel still has an average of 40 rooms available during the World Championships. An international team was booked into the hotel on Aug. 6 and more teams are likely on the way.

The hoteliers can’t release the names of the teams staying with them due to security concerns.

Sixty-seven international teams are booked into area hotels and eight more are in the booking process. Another three have voiced interest in participating but have yet to officially enter the competition or book rooms.

Gonzalez hopes the World Championships committee sends more teams her way.

“In September nobody stays,” Gonzalez said. “So this is great.”

said her committee designated 20 team hotels, all within 30 minutes of Nathan Benderson Park.

The World Rowing Championship committee has worked with HBC Event Services in formulating hotel contracts, bids and room blocks since 2013.

“This is a very complex orchestration,” Hartley said. “There are lots of moving parts.”

Even so, Max Winitz, media and public relations manager for the World Championships, said none

of the late committing teams is having trouble finding a block of rooms.

“This is pretty typical in the rowing world,” Winitz said. “We were fully prepared.”

Hartley said the largest teams, such as Great Britain, the U.S. and Australia, have their needs and resources planned out from year-to-year. She said some of the smaller European and African countries don’t always have experience planning for major

events, so it becomes important to get those teams in a hotel close to the park.

Tom Yorke, manager at County Inn & Suites in Bradenton, said his hotel has one large team occupying almost 80% of the rooms for the entire two weeks.

It is such a high occupancy rate that Yorke said his employees had learned some of the visiting team’s language.

“We have been looking forward to this for a long time,” Yorke said.

New hospice seeks volunteers Twenty-four bed facility expects to be open by early next year.

During another doctor’s visit for his unrelenting battle against prostate cancer, Lakewood Ranch’s Richard Reskow was advised to quit his volunteer work for Tidewell Hospice.

“The doctor said all it would do is depress me,” said Reskow, who was spending his Friday morning in his usual place, the lobby at Tidewell Hospice Ellenton. “So this is the thing. It does the opposite. It rejuvenates me. I came to life.”

Those wanting to walk through the locked front door of the hospice push the button and look through a window as the 76-yearold Reskow approaches. The lines on his face tell of a kind, welcoming man who understands that no one really wants to make this particular visit.

He smiles. Whether he approaches a patient, a visiting friend or family member, he has a calming, peaceful influence.

“I didn’t know how I would react here,” he said. “But it’s something that just comes to you.

You learn from experience.”

Stacy Groff, the director of volunteer services for Tidewell Hospice, encourages Reskow to tell his story. She said he is the epitome of what makes the nonprofit work, especially considering it must maintain volunteer hours equal to or higher than 5% of the paid employees’ hours to meet Medicare requirements.

Construction almost is complete on a new Tidewell Hospice facility on Rangeland Parkway in Lakewood Ranch. It will be the nonprofit’s eighth facility and by far its biggest.

It’s largest to date is a 14-bed facility in Bradenton. While the

Lakewood Ranch hospice will open with six beds, it eventually will be a 24-bed facility. Groff estimates it will take about 300 hours of volunteer hours a week.

Reskow will be part of the effort as he will transfer to be closer to his Watercrest home once the hospice is complete.

A sales, marketing and editorial executive for McGraw Hill for the final 23 years of his professional life, Reskow moved to Lakewood Ranch in 2001 and began to enjoy the good life playing golf all the time.

Then in 2007, he received the prostate cancer diagnosis and he restructured his life.

Initially, it appeared he beat the disease, but it did force him to question how he was spending his spare time. He talked to his wife, Teri, and then began volunteering his time to the Center for Building Hope, which provided free services to cancer patients and their families.

“I wanted to step up and give back,” he told his wife.

However, the Center for Building Hope filed for bankruptcy and closed in 2015.

Reskow went right to Tidewell Hospice.

“I work two-hour shifts on Mondays and Fridays,” he said.

“You answer the door, and that’s a big deal here. A patient rings the bell, and in a half minute somebody is there. You do whatever you can.”

Whatever he can includes vigils while a patient is in the final stage of “actively dying.”

“Most times, a patient is unresponsive, but you can pray or read to them,” he said. “I hold their hand. They often will have people come to visit, and if so, you can socialize with (the visitors) to make them feel comfortable.”

Although the average stay at Tidewell Hospice is 11 days, some patients live at a facility for a year.

“I try to talk to patients who can or will talk,” Reskow said. “Most

are usually wonderful, lucid people. They appreciate everything you do, that you are spending time with them.”

Reskow drifted into a description of the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. “It’s about our tombstone and the two years, when you were born and when you died, that don’t mean very much.

Between those years is a dash that represents your life. How will you respect your life?”

He said volunteer hours take all forms at Tidewell Hospital. “You decide what limits you want,” he said. “If you don’t want to get involved with the patients, you don’t. Whatever you do, it’s amazing the number of people who thank you, thank you, thank you. You get called things

you don’t deserve, like saint and angel.”

Groff said anyone interested can select from a long list of volunteer duties. Some people make baked goods for the visiting family and friends. Some check the exterior of the building to make sure the landscaping and lighting is in order. Some specialize in data entry or gardening.

And others, like Reskow, do anything they can for the patients.

“I am the person who is there when they die,” he said. “I just happen to be a 76-year-old cancer patient. This makes you appreciate life like you wouldn’t believe.

But none of us is going on forever.”

He referenced a famous quote

by Nelson Henderson, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”

“Here, I don’t have time to think about the cancer,” he said.

“I want to push the end out as much as I can. Until then, I want to plant trees. But I don’t expect to sit under any of them.”

help animal rescue Tropical storm Emily sends Nate’s animals to foster homes temporarily.

Donna Arnold eased onto the floor of her Silver Lake home and grabbed a green-and-yellow dinosaur to lure over her new love, Bullet, a black-and-tan Chihuahua.

They played for a moment before Bullet sat down and leaned his back against Arnold’s leg.

“He’s just so loving with what he’s been through,” she said. “And he’s trusting. How can you not love him? He follows you around with those big, brown eyes.”

Arnold and her sister Sharry Lueck, who also is her roommate, adopted the 6-year-old Bullet from Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue Aug. 5, just three days after agreeing to take him on a temporary basis. After her 18-yearold American Eskimo, Timber, died five years ago, Donna Arnold swore she would never get another dog.

But on July 31, downpours from Tropical Storm Emily flooded the kennel area at Nate’s campus on Lorraine Road, sending organization leaders on a quest to place about 70 dogs and cats in foster care in homes. They put a plea on Facebook for foster homes and within four hours had sent about 55 dogs and cats home with newly registered foster families. Fifteen more, who had been at the veterinarian for spay/neuter, were placed the following day.

“We never thought we would have such a response,” Nate’s Associate Director Karen Slomba said.

Arnold and Lueck were among the people who responded, and within hours were matched with a dog. They first took home a pit bull mix named Linda. The dog seemed OK, at first, but later demonstrated behaviors that concerned the pair, so they returned her to Nate’s the following day and offered to take a different animal instead.

“Then they brought out Bullet,” Lueck said.

After just being neutered, Bullet was sneezing and shy and needed an allergen-free home without other animals. For Lueck, it was love at first sight, and she carried the dog home in her lap.

Bullet had a mangled ear, a bowed back left leg and fur missing where he had likely been burned or cut. The veterinarian told them he had probably been shot.

Within one day, Arnold knew she wanted to keep Bullet, but she didn’t want to board him during her trip to Europe at the end of August. Lueck would be traveling during that timeframe, as well, and Nate’s could not promise Bullet would be available for adoption after they returned.

“I was almost in tears,” Arnold said. “I didn’t want him to be abused again, and I knew he would have a good home here.”

Her friend, Julie Bifano, agreed to keep Bullet during the sisters’ vacations and the pair filled out the adoption paperwork Aug. 5.

FLOODING AT NATE’S Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue on Lorraine Road in Lakewood Ranch has experienced minor flooding in the past, but nothing like July 31 from Tropical Storm Emily.

“It was so much rain so fast, it overtook us,” said Nate’s Associate Director Karen Slomba.

Slomba said water levels between the dog kennels were rising so rapidly they worried the kennels themselves would become submerged. However, the flooding, which dried up within two days, did not cause any lasting damage.

Nate’s does not plan to make any infrastructure improvements as a result of the flooding, she said. It may, however, develop memorandums-of-understanding with other rescue groups so that if a similar situation ever arises that it could quickly place animals in the temporary care of other rescue groups. It also expects to expand its list of foster families available to take animals on a temporary basis.

“He had such a cute personality,” Lueck said. “He comes up and puts his head on your lap. It’s like, ‘Oh yeah, this is my home.’”

Arnold said the arrangement is perfect. Bullet is small enough to go on annual camping trips with the sisters. At about 6 years old, he is house broken and they can take turns taking him on walks or tending to his other needs. He only eats a quarter cup of dry dog food and one tablespoon of wet food twice a day.

He loves to play and rarely barks — so far, only at men.

Arnold and Lueck had signed up to walk dogs at Nate’s in November 2016, but never had the opportunity. During the winter months, seasonal volunteers seemed to fill up the dog-walking slots in which the sisters were interested, and soon they abandoned their efforts.

The sisters had talked about fostering animals, but had not signed up yet to do it. Arnold brought up the idea just a week before the storm and mentioned she would look more into it after she returned from a vacation to Europe.

Then, they saw the Facebook plea and their plans changed.

Arnold pulled a toy off the carpet and waved it toward Bullet, who was ready to play.

“God works in mysterious ways,” she said.

It comes out when he talks about the leadership forum.

“I thought, ‘Wow, this is sick,’” he said about going to St. John’s University, which used to be a college basketball power. “It was also very metropolitan. Very diverse. I loved it. It was cool, though, and mundane at times, and gruesome.”

His mom then told a story that described him quite well.

She was dropping him off at St. John’s and was looking around for him. All these intellectual offerings at the ready, and he had found a pick-up basketball game in the middle of the campus and was playing.

Will’s world is full of choices.

Graceful giving Grace Community Church raises $15,000 to help with school supplies.

Grace Community Church’s Neil and Shirley McArthur have had a passion for serving those less fortunate.

“It comes from the struggles we had raising seven children in our household,” Shirley McArthur said. “Being able to feed them, give them school clothes and Christmas gifts was hard, especially with all of the bills we had.”

This will be the couple’s 29th year running Eternal Bread of Life Community Outreach, which helps provide clothing, backpacks and school supplies to families in the Newtown community of Sarasota.

“Poverty is most definitely a problem,” Neil McArthur said.

“A lot of parents are not there for their children. This is a start to getting children ready for school and even college.”

The McArthurs said that what they are doing now is something that would have helped them when they were struggling.

Ranch and Bread of Life Community Outreach partnered for the fourth year in a row to provide 200 families (550 children) with everything they need for the first day of school.

The backpacks and the school supplies were funded by Grace Community Church, which raised $15,000 for the effort.

“It took four weeks for us to raise all the funds,” said Jessica Obenauer, the Grace Community Church outreach director. “We are so blessed as a church, and the congregation wants to help.”

On the day of distribution, the families who were picking up backpacks also received 250 bags of free food donated by All Faiths Food Bank, as well as manicures, haircuts and professional photos.

Sarasota’s Ziarre Smith, 6, took advantage of a pink manicure.

“I thought I was going to get my haircut,” Smith said.” But then I

saw the nail station and I was so excited.”

Those who registered for distribution day voiced their appreciation for the charity.

Jessica Thomas, of Sarasota, was attending the event for the first time. Her son, Owen McDonnell, will be starting kindergarten.

“Owen is so excited to finally be going to school,” Thomas said.

“This whole event has been very helpful for us. We really can’t afford a lot of this stuff.”

Grace Community Church hopes the recipients know someone cares about them.

“We just love to help the community,” Obenauer said. “We are big community people over at Grace Community Church, we just love getting involved and giving back.”

POOL BULLY 700 block of GreyHawk Boulevard, Bradenton Information only: A juvenile was at a community pool with his neighbor’s mother while several other juveniles played in the pool with a ball. When the ball went awry, and landed among a group of teenagers, the first juvenile went to retrieve it and give it back to the group of kids playing with it. However, after the first juvenile was handed the ball, another teen grabbed him and dunked him under the water. The neighbor’s mother spoke with security about the incident, which was then relayed to the victim’s mother. No injuries occurred and an affidavit was obtained from the neighbor’s mother.

ANGRY NEIGHBOR NEEDS ‘NO PARKING’ SIGN 7600 block of Silverwood Court, Bradenton Information only: A Sheriff’s Office deputy was sent to a neighborhood to make contact with a man who had been trying to sell his home. The man said a Realtor had a confrontation with one of his neighbors while trying to show the home. The neighbor allegedly used profanity toward the Realtor showing the house because he had parked in front of the neighbor’s home. The deputy spoke to other neighbors who told him the angry neighbor “staked a claim to the street” and gets mad if anyone parks in front of his house. Another neighbor said the angry neighbor caused a “big stink” when he had family over for Thanksgiving and they parked on the street. The deputy interviewed the angry neighbor, who said he parks his car in front of his house so his neighbors can’t park their cars in front of his house. He said HOA rules stipulate that only the homeowners can park in front of their own house. All parties told the deputy they would stay away from each other and respect their own property.

Parkway. “It was eye-opening to see that large of a corporation would put its headquarters here,” she said.

Touring the facility, she also learned innovative, trendy ideas for creating a successful environment for the employees.

On Friday, Onstad’s role will be switched. Instead of taking the tour, this time around she will be giving a presentation about the new Waterside Place. Her presentation will take place on a bus that will carry the group of 30 to the new community following lunch at Lakewood Ranch Country Club.

Although the 2017 Road Show event sold out quickly, it probably won’t offer additional seats in the future.

“Heather Kasten (the LWRBA executive director) does a great job coordinating this,” said Sarasota’s Marty Taffel, who is the director of business development for Wakefield, Beasley & Associates of Alpharetta, Ga. “I think you keep it at 30. People really have a chance to meet different individuals. It gives you more intimacy and focus.”

Taffel, who is on the LWRBA economic development council, said he doesn’t know of other such tours in the state that have the same scope, visiting stops in an entire community.

“I think we could become a model for others,” he said. “This really helps us understand the community’s growth. You can check out the (CORE project) or the mixed-use development at Waterside.”

The 2017 Road Show begins at 8:30 a.m. at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall and ends at 4:30 p.m. at Main Street. Over the course of the day, more than 50 Lakewood Ranch region businesses will give presentations.

One of the first stops will be the new Harrod Properties industrial park at 9:30 a.m.

Stephen Racine, a Harrod Properties vice president, is elated he could be a presenter. “Having 30 business people see our project is great for us,” Racine said. “The more I can get here to see this project, the better.”

Other businesses represented on the tour include Naughty Monk Brewery, Arbor Grand, Aqua Plumbing & Air, Keiser University, Even Hotel, Centauri Insurance, Neal Communities and Benderson Park.

Kirk Boylston, Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty’s president, will give a CORE project overview while Jeramy Burkinshaw will give an overview about upcoming projects at The Mall at University Town Center.

After losing heralded runners John Rivera to the University of Mississippi and Bryce Easton to the University of Tampa, the Lakewood Ranch cross-country team enters 2017 in dire need of a star.

Rivera and Easton, in part, helped guide the Mustangs to a second-place finish at last year’s Class 4A championships in Tallahassee.

This year, Lakewood Ranch returns a strong nucleus of seniors Andrew Dean and Kyle Wray, junior Johnny Reid and sophomore Calvin Walker.

If Mustangs coach Bryan Thomas is looking for a consistent leader from that group to push the team, it might just be Wray.

That’s not a given, though.

Wray, who also runs track for Lakewood Ranch, has battled stress injuries in his legs and feet since his freshman year. At first, he thought it was a random pain at the top of his right foot. He ran through it, until he attempted an 800-meter race at Manatee High’s concrete track.

“It was a lot of pounding, and I heard a little pop, I felt it,” Wray said. “After that race, I could hardly walk from the pain.”

Wray suffered a stress fracture of the third metatarsal in his right foot. He recovered, not thinking the injury was anything other than a freak occurrence. He started worrying more when his sophomore cross-country season was affected by another stress injury, this time in his lower leg.

Not thinking it was the same thing, due to the difference in location, he tried to push through.

It only made things worse.

Doctors don’t know what, exactly, caused these first injuries. Wray’s bone density is a bit low, he said, but not low enough to cause worry. His calcium levels are above average. His blood work was fine. Now that he’s had them, though, he’s more susceptible to them returning, he said.

To combat this, Wray has changed his entire running routine.

“It started with changing shoes,”

WHAT IS A STRESS FRACTURE? n Occurs when muscles become fatigued and are unable to absorb added shock. n The fatigued muscle transfers the overload of stress to the bone, causing a tiny crack. n Female athletes experience more stress fractures than male athletes, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. n The most important treatment is rest. Recovery generally takes six to eight weeks. n Re-injury can lead to chronic problems, where stress fractures do not heal properly.

Wray said. “I’m running in Hokas now, which are softer (compared to other running shoes). I don’t run every day anymore. I run every other day, just to give my bones and body the rest they need. I run pretty much all on grass, even workouts that wouldn’t normally be on grass.

“There’s a lot of cross-training in the pool. If I do two-a-days, the second run can’t be on ground.

I also use the Zero Runner. It’s a machine that allows you to have no pounding.

“These are my best friends, so I don’t want them to be in a position where they can’t succeed because I did something dumb, or trained too hard. There’s other ways to get where I want to go.”

His tolerance for pain is high at this point, so is putting his body through this worth what running gives him back?

“Each time I’ve come back and realized you get more out of it than you think,” Wray said. “Coach Thomas is very good about not only improving us as runners but as people.”

At last year’s championships, Wray finished the 5,000-meter run in 16:55.25. He was 42nd overall, and best of the Mustangs returning runners.

If the Mustangs want to finish top-five in the state again, they’ll need depth runners to develop.

Thomas listed Rivera’s junior brother, James Rivera, as someone he thinks could develop, alongside junior Dylan Wellard and sophomore Kevin Irwin.

“They hopefully will be there as legitimate fifth, sixth and seventh runners for us,” Thomas said.

“That makes it fun and challenging.”

Jordan Schmucker Jordan Schmucker is a junior volleyball player at Lakewood Ranch High. She has played varsity since the first game of her freshman season.

When did you start playing volleyball?

Four years ago. I quit playing softball, I was burned out from it. I needed something else to do and fell in love with it (volleyball).

What is the appeal of volleyball?

I love the team aspect. I love being a setter and assisting teammates, and running around the court and taking charge.

What is your best skill on the court?

Probably setting, but I think I’m an all-around player. I’ve played a lot of positions in the past.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

For myself, I want to get noticed and recruited by colleges. For the team, I want us to win a few more district games at the end of the season.

What is your favorite food?

Either chocolate or ice cream, but my favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate, too.

What hobbies do you have?

Just hanging with my family, really. I also play beach volleyball.

New playoff system points in right direction

T

he Florida High School Athletic Association has been using a broken playoff system for football.

If you convince me why it makes sense to automatically reward a second-place district finisher, regardless of record, with a playoff spot, I’ll buy you lunch.

The days of a weak district automatically placing two teams in the playoffs are over.

When the FHSAA announced it would be switching to a new, points-based system for the 2017 season, there was much rejoicing in football circles.

A summary of the new system’s formula probably would give you a headache. You’re not the only one, I promise.

Let’s just say that everything is based on points, instead of wins and losses.

A team, most of all, gets points for winning. No matter what, a team that loses can’t get more points for that week than a team that wins. However, a team is rewarded for playing a stronger team. The new system of points is based on the win-loss record of a team’s opponents.

Simply said, a team gets more points for losing to a good team than a bad one. A team also gets more points for beating a good team than a bad one. The points aren’t tabulated until the end of the season when all the records

are known.

The FHSAA also offers a bonus of three points for playing a team that has made the playoffs within the last two seasons.

In classes 5A-8A, district champions will still get an automatic berth, but the four slots previously reserved for district runners-up will now be awarded to the four teams in each region (not district) that accumulated the most points. Theoretically, that means five teams from one district could make the playoffs, unlikely as it is. For an in-depth breakdown, visit fhsaa.org.

Only one area program has made the playoffs with consistency in recent years, so I chatted with Braden River coach Curt Bradley to get his thoughts on the system.

“It’s good from a coaching perspective, because you can preach to your kids that every week matters,” Bradley said. “In the past, it’s kind of been district weeks that matter, and you had those games that get sandwiched in between a district game.

You’re like, ‘Well, do you play all your guys?’ You don’t want to show everything on film for

the next week’s opponent, those sorts of things. You can’t hold anything back this year.”

Bradley is glad the runner-up rule has been eliminated. Last season, Southeast High stole the Class 5A-District 11 consolation playoff slot with a record of 4-6, because all four wins came against district opponents.

The new system is a step forward, but it also has its share of drawbacks in terms of designing a schedule. Not all districts have the same number of teams, so teams with two or three district games have more freedom than a team like the Class 7A-District 11 Pirates, who have five district games, or half of its yearly schedule, each season.

It also doesn’t account for what might happen to a team within a season. If Braden River beats district opponent Venice High when the Indians have a healthy Bryce Carpenter (committed to Coastal Carolina University) at quarterback, but he gets injured later in the season, misses games, and Venice sinks without him, why should Braden River be punished in the point system for that?

“It definitely changes the way you schedule, as far as the points system and scheduling tougher competition,” Bradley said.

The Pirates start their regular season with an Aug. 24 game against Chatfield High,

of Littleton, Colo., at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. (Yes, the same points system applies to games against out-of-state teams). They follow that with a home game against Clearwater High and a road game against Manatee High before getting into district play.

Braden River closes the season at St. Petersburg, meaning the Pirates will get 15 bonus points for playing five teams that made the playoffs last season, the four named here plus Venice.

It’s a tough road, one Bradley clearly thinks his team can handle. There’s no doubt the Pirates are taking the “play the best possible teams” approach.

The move toward valuing teams’ records is a good one, but the overall system still has some holes. This season as a test and if it works, great, I’m guessing there will be more questions.

The best solution remains to take the famous words of the late Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders’ owner, to heart.

s East County’s Shanica Karin, 12, stepped to the dance floor Aug. 12 at the Mall at University Town Center, she could feel her nerves kick in.

But they soon dissipated.

“It was so much fun, that all (the nerves) went away,” Karin said of Microsoft’s first Just Dance Tournament in the Center Court. “I don’t dance often, I just wanted to try it, but I think I’ll be trying this again.”

About 70 people gathered to show off their dance moves. Participants competed in groups of four to a song written by The Black Eyed Peas. East County’s Jackson Beckner won the tournament.

akewood Ranch’s Megha Chauhan wore a smile on her face, but held a crumpled tissue in her hand as she chatted Aug. 10 in the cafeteria of Robert E. Willis Elementary School.

Manatee County’s public schools were welcoming students for the start of the 20172018 school year.

Chauhan’s oldest child, Ada, 5, started kindergarten. She also was about to take her youngest, 4-year-old Veer, for his first day of voluntary prekindergarten.

“I've already cried so much,” Chauhan said with a laugh. “It’s too much.”

Chauhan found comfort in the company of friend Babita Sandhu and other parents who attended a Willis Elementary School “Boo Hoo or Yahoo Breakfast,” after they had dropped off their children.

By 9 a.m. students were busy interacting with teachers, getting to know their classmates and practicing their handwriting, among other tasks.

Mira, a student at Robert E. Willis Elementary School, was sure one baby turtle was asking her to take it home.

“She wanted to be my pet," said Mira, who saw the turtle opening and closing its mouth.

"She was talking to me.”
