The commission liked the project overall, but took issue with the fact it omitted an extension of Clubhouse Drive without first removing the roadway from the county’s future roadway maps.

On June 8, Myarra Property Joint Venture, of which Neal is a partner, hit another roadblock.

Planning commissioners voted 4-2 against eliminating the road from county plans. Manatee County transportation officials said the road is on the map for a reason and is projected to carry a maximum of 5,000 vehicles per day, according to traffic models predicting beyond year 2040.

“I’m a big fan of never say never,” Commissioner Matt Bower said of building the road. “Twenty years ago, I never would have said building 44th (Avenue East) over the river was good. I still don’t say it’s a good idea, but it’s happening. I don’t see a public benefit (to removing Clubhouse). That’s my biggest hang up right now.”

sion decision, Neal said his group plans to forge ahead, bringing the proposal before Manatee County commissioners in August as planned.

“We’re not afraid,” Neal said.

“We think preserving and saving the wetlands and saving taxpayer money (by not building the road) is the thing to do.

“Our presentation (in August) will reflect what we learned,” he said. “The road has more negative impacts on the neighborhood and the environment than the subdivision (we proposed). The goal of a thoroughfare isn’t just to deal with existing trips. It attracts cars.”

Myarra Property Joint Venture consultants testified land takings would cost the county a minimum of $2.25 million and total costs for that plus design and construction would be about $5.6 million.

Additionally, the county will have a hard time securing permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to eliminate high-quality wetlands and build the road across the Braden River.

“The time for this segment has passed,” Neal said. “I’m pro infrastructure. Infrastructure is needed at its proper time frame.”

A handful of members of Friends of Keep Woods, a group organized to purchase the property and preserve it as a future Braden River Preserve, attended the meeting but did not speak publicly. They said they came to learn, but noted the reasons not to develop the road are the same as the reasons the property should be preserved — protect the existing neighborhood, eliminate impacts to wetlands and preserve habitat corridors for wildlife.

In the end it costs double. I am not an expert, but I think since roundabouts are something new in this area, FDOT should consult with cities in other countries about their experience with roundabouts.

raffic experts at the Florida Department of Transportation say a corridor of roundabouts along State Road 64 east of its intersection with Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and Upper Manatee River Road will improve safety for travelers. Local residents are skeptical.

At a FDOT traffic operations staff meeting June 6, officials reviewed traffic analysis reports for the intersections of S.R. 64 at Greyhawk Boulevard and Lorraine Road. Based on those findings, FDOT is recommending roundabouts on S.R. 64 at both its intersections with Greyhawk Boulevard/Pope Road and Lorraine Road.

A future Project Development and Engineering study, called a PD&E, is scheduled to confirm that finding, determine design, calculate potential costs, and figure out how much right of way is needed, among other considerations. FDOT will host community meetings for the projects, which generally takes 18 months plus another 18 months for design.

“We will have public workshops, and we will have public hearings on every one of these projects,” FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen said. “We have to take everything into consideration when we’re doing this.”

Stublen noted the entrance to GreyHawk Landing, Greyhawk Boulevard, does not qualify for traffic signals.

“We look at all options,” Stublen said. “It was determined Greyhawk would qualify for a roundabout and that would be the best option. It is safer and increases traffic flow.”

Construction on both roundabouts is projected to begin in 2021, pending funding from the state Legislature. The Lorraine Road intersection already is in the early states of its roughly twoyear PD&E study and design likely will start in 2019.

FDOT will start the PD&E study at Greyhawk “soon” with design also starting in 2019, Stublen said.

“Our goal is to try to do them at the same time in 2021,” he said.

FDOT in January announced its decision to construct a roundabout at the S.R. 64-Rye Road intersection. The design phase is now underway. Design and right of way acquisition funding is in FDOT’s fiscal year 2016-2017, with construction funding in fiscal year 2017-2018. Weather permitting, construction should take about 18 months.

Residents of GreyHawk Landing have been vocal in seeking traffic relief at the main entrance into their community, where wait times to exit onto State Road 64 often are more than five minutes.

However, residents say roundabouts are not the right solution.

“It’s better than nothing, but it’s not what we need here,” GreyHawk Landing Community Development District Supervisor Mike Plaia said. “I don’t think it’s nearly as good as a light. There’s more houses built and sold every

week here along the S.R. 64 corridor. Two to three years from now with all the building, the roundabouts are going to be outdated.

It seems like they don’t look into the future at all.

Andrea Henley said she’s been nearly side-swiped and rear ended at least three times while trying to enter the community.

“As we are all aware, the main issue for years has been turning left, east on State Road 64, coming out of the subdivision,” she said. “Now that there is a crossroad running north and south into GreyHawk, it has heightened the risk even more for accidents.”

Ollie Kyte, a 10-year resident of the community, said residents find alternative routes, other than the main entrance to leave the community, because of safety concerns. The main entrance, however, is still a primary means of access, and residents want a signal.

“When we’ve gone to meetings (with FDOT), they are very insistent that the traffic light isn’t the way to go,” he said. “They don’t live within the community. They don’t go out there and see the orange trucks coming at 60 to 70 miles per hour.”

FDOT ROUNDABOUT GUIDELINES Roundabouts are particularly suited in these situations: n At two-way stop controlled (TWSC) intersections where traffic volumes on the approaches are such that there is unacceptable delay for the minor movement. n Where the traffic volumes are such that there would be greater delay if the intersection were signalized. In many situations, the capacity is similar but delay and safety at particular intersections may be improved. n At intersections with high left turning volumes, especially those with single lane approaches. n At intersections with more than four legs. n At local road intersec-

tions that have a high number of crashes involving either through movements or left turning movements.

Quite often, the volumes do not warrant a traffic signal and the other treatments will not alleviate the safety concerns. n At high speed rural and suburban intersections that have a high number of wrecks involving crossing or left turning accidents. n At T and Y intersections where the major traffic route turns through a right angle and where there are high left turn volumes.

An increased benefit is an overall reduction in vehicle speed while accommodating all traffic movements. n At intersections on local roads where it is not desirable to give priority to either road and where overall traffic calming is needed.

“I think a traffic light can be strung and hooked up to power and controls in 48 hours or less. How many people will die, or suffer debilitating injuries at that intersection between mid 2017 and the end of 2022 when the roundabout would be complete?

n response to the population boom in East County, the Manatee County School District is adding a new middle school adjacent to B.D. Gullett Elementary. It is also building new wings at Lakewood Ranch High School and Gullett, Robert Willis and Gene Witt elementary schools.

Superintendent Diana Greene said the construction will increase the capacity at Lakewood Ranch High and Witt Elementary by 200 students and the capacity at Gullett and Willis elementary schools by 100 students. Along with getting a new wing at Witt, the school will undergo a renovation. Total cost for the renovation and new wing is $17 million.

In addition, Gullett will receive five or six new portable classrooms this coming school year to handle the students until the new wing is constructed. The new wings at all the schools should be open by August 2019.

The new middle school just east of Gullett will cost approximately $45 million to build with hopes of being open for the 2019-2020 school year. It will have a capacity of 1,164 students.

The new wing at Lakewood Ranch High School will cost $10 million. The wings at Gullett and Willis approximately will cost $2.7 million each.

With the half-cent tax referendum passing in 2016, the district was able to finance a $150 million bond to go toward the new facilities, with the rest paid by impact fees.

Greene said even with the new high school being built in Parrish and being able to host 2,000 students, it isn't expected to draw many students away from Lakewood Ranch High. Therefore, the new wing became necessary.

“I'm more nervous about a year from now, needing another school,” Greene said.

Greene also confirmed the district is talking with Schroeder-Manatee Ranch about a land swap that could lead to a new high school adjacent to the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch.

Traffic fatality prompts safety concerns

hen Tara Preserve resident Darby Connor travels the winding, two-lane section of Tara Boulevard south of Tara Preserve Lane, he has flashbacks of past wrecks.

A vehicle crashed into a newly installed “Neighborhood Watch” sign and some bushes at the northeast corner of Tara Boulevard and Linger Lodge Road last month.

In 2010, farther north, a truck drove over the curb at a bend in the road and ended up submerged in a pond.

And on June 4, 37-year-old Adam Pitre died from injuries sustained in a May 31 single-car crash in which he failed to negotiate the curve properly, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. His 2016 Cadillac jumped a curb just south of Tara Preserve Lane and hit a tree.

His passenger, 35-year-old Jessica McCracken, of Seminole, remained in serious condition as of June 13.

“We’ve got to do something to slow traffic on this two-lane piece of Tara Preserve,” Connor said, noting drivers come up quickly from a straight four-lane Tara Boulevard into the curvy Tara Preserve section. “We have accidents every single year. It’s not the first time we’ve had injuries, but this sadly resulted in death.”

The two-lane section of Tara Boulevard runs from just south from about Tara Preserve Lane less than a mile to Linger Lodge Road and then southward until the roadway dead-ends.

Connor said speed tables, which are longer than speed bumps and flat on the top, would slow down traffic. The addition of flashing warning lights, alerting drivers to the oncoming curves ahead, also could have an impact.

“They’ve got to do something here,” resident Doug Agren said.

“It’s needed.”

Resident Dave Wyble and his wife, Elizabeth, walk daily on the sidewalk of that section of roadway. About five years ago, they were nearly hit by a car — at the exact location of the most recent wreck — after a vehicle struck and jumped the curb.

“She hit the tree before she hit us,” Wyble said. “We’ve been here 13 years and one of the things that hasn’t changed is that people speed here.”

Not everyone agrees. Larry Baker, who lives in the River Place neighborhood at the southernmost end of Tara Boulevard, south of Linger Lodge Road, drives Tara Boulevard daily to go north to State Road 70. He witnesses tailgating and some speeding, but said drivers generally follow the rules. He said speed bumps, speed tables or other trafficcalming measures will be more of an annoyance to drivers than a deterrent.

installed temporary speed signs in 2012 and that helped. Connor said the signs were removed after a month, though, following resident complaints.

Ron Schulhofer, Manatee County’s director of public works, called the most recent crash tragic and said the county likely won’t receive a full report on its cause for a few weeks. When the county gets the report, it will review roadway conditions.

“Roadways are designed and constructed to accommodate anticipated traffic volumes, speeds and conditions,” Schulhofer said. “We have an annual countywide process to review crash reports from law enforcement for any needed safety improvements. In addition, we pay particular attention to serious crashes reported to us when we receive them. Typically, we don’t have the full report for a few weeks if there were significant injuries or fatalities. When received we will evaluate. However, based on the story we heard, it looks like a single vehicle accident, failed to properly negotiate a curve.”

Connor said he again will begin lobbying county officials for improvements. He said statistics compiled by the Tara Community Development District show three wrecks a year on that stretch of road.

The Tara CDD, which maintains common area landscaping in that area, spends up to $3,000 annually replacing damaged sod, shrubbery and trees, said Connor, a CDD supervisor.

Anxious customers filled the waiting room chairs in the hope they might find the perfect pet.

Business appears to be pretty good at Nate’s, and it is about to

get even better.

On June 6, Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue announced it had formed a partnership with the Paws and Warriors nonprofit of Bradenton to provide fee-waived companion animals to veterans suffering from debilitating conditions. A grant from the Bill and Maryann Vinall Fund of the Manatee Community Foundation will cover expenses for the first 40 veterans served.

“Nate’s has such a great reputation, and we knew we could make a bigger difference by pairing with them,” said Bradenton’s LaVonne Bower, who formed Paws and Warriors in January.

Bower adopted a rescue dog, Oz, from Nate’s a year ago. Nate’s had rescued Oz, who only has three legs, from a kill shelter.

“He would not be alive today if it wasn’t for Nate’s,” said Bower, who eventually took Oz with her on a trip to a Veterans Affairs hospital.

“The communication with (the veterans) was so much better,”

Bower said. “With Oz, I could see them coming out of their shell.”

Bower came up with the Paws and Warriors idea, but it was delayed a bit when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October. She just finished her treatments and is ready to go forward with the program.

Bower will screen physically and emotionally challenged veterans to see if they qualify. She said studies have shown contact with a pet can lower stress and blood pressure while helping combat depression.

She will send the qualified veterans to Nate’s, which will have its adoption team match them with a compatible pet. The adoption fees will be waived, and the veterans will receive a starter kit that includes a crate, leash, collar and food. All the dogs receive six weeks of training.

“We collectively decide what dog (or cat) is suited to the veteran’s needs,” said Karen Slomba, associate director of Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue. “When we start the process we ask questions such as ‘How many hours a day will you leave the dog alone? Do you live in a home or apartment? Do you have a fenced-in yard?’ We need to get a feel for their lifestyle.”

Slomba said Nate’s loves helping the vets, but the program also helps with its main goal, which is to save as many animals as possible.

Carlos E. Haile Elementary named former assistant principal Kate Collis as its new principal.

2002 through 2014, said it’s a perfect fit. Kerley hired Collis in 2013 and has been somewhat of a mentor to Collis.

“She has a heart for middle school kids, and that became evident when I worked with her,” Kerley said. “I think she is the perfect combination of skill sets that will be right for Haile.”

Collis said she is well equipped for the job.

Her daughter, Jordyn, was a student at Haile while Collis worked as an assistant principal.

Jordyn now attends Braden River High School.

“I’ve seen Haile as both a parent and administrator,” Collis said. “I know, as a parent, the expectations I have for my child and that I have of my teachers. It gives me an insight because I know as a parent what I want from the school.”

Collis said she fell in love with the idea of being a teacher as a second-grader. During her time teaching social studies at Booker Middle School (2004-2012), she switched to administration.

“Once I started taking administrative classes, I began to see where I could make a difference on a larger scale,” Collis said. “In a classroom, you can only really do that with maybe 200 kids. As an administrator, you have a whole school of kids to work with.”

Her first official day of work as principal will be July 1. She has high hopes for her new job, and plans on staying as long as they let her, she said.

Haile Middle School hires new principal

It was her immediate thought when Kate Collis heard she would be the new Carlos E. Haile Middle School principal.

“I have come home,” said the 40-year-old Collis. “My mind is still reeling about the excitement of it all.”

On June 3, the former Haile Middle assistant principal (20132016) was hired to replace Sharon Scarbrough, who took over as the principal at Braden River High School.

Collis was transferred from Haile last school year to be an assistant principal at Martha B. King Middle School. When she heard about the search for a principal at Haile, she applied immediately.

“I am excited to come home to that standard of excellence and to a place where students are seeking engagement,” Collis said.

“The wonderful thing about Haile is that it has a long track record of excellence, so it’s not like I’m going in there having to fix things.

I have to maintain that record, which is ideal.”

The Players Centre for Performing Arts has received its first major gift toward a $30 million project at Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch.

s Michelle Bianchi, the managing director and CEO of The Players Centre for Performing Arts, considered the considerable challenge of raising money for a $30 million theater complex in the new Waterside at Lakewood Ranch, she began to consider options.

Perhaps the complex could be built in three $10 million stages?

While a three-stage construction process remains a possibility, those associated with The Players have an “anything’s possible” attitude after the project received its first major donation June 9.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County announced a $1 million gift shortly after Bianchi received news the city of Sarasota has interest in purchasing The Players’ existing theater at 838 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.

Whether the city is interested at its current listing price of $9.5 million has yet to be determined.

However, for Bianchi and her staff, the news is validation their end goal is within reach.

“This is not a pipe dream,” Bianchi said.

Bianchi and Artistic Director Jeffery Kin have spearheaded the effort to educate the Lakewood Ranch-area about the value of The Players Centre since May 2016 when the theater complex project in Lakewood Ranch was announced.

The first major gift comes from the Muriel O’Neil Fund of the Performing Arts. Bianchi and Kin say the fundraising effort can now begin in earnest.

“At all the meetings I attend, people always ask me, ‘Who is going to be the lead gift?’” Bianchi said. “Now we are able to roll out the first major capital campaign piece.”

Roxie Jerde, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, said The Players Centre was a perfect match for the Muriel O’Neil Fund.

Jerde had spoken to Dr. Ger-

trude Hight, who formed the Muriel O’Neil Fund in honor of her late sister, shortly before her death. Hight explained her sister’s love of the performing arts and her passion for attending performances at The Players Theatre.

When the Community Foundation saw all the particulars of The Players Centre for Performing Arts’ move to Lakewood Ranch, the gift became reality.

“We know The Players has been around for generations,” Jerde said. “We know Michelle (Bianchi) and Jeffery (Kin) and their passion for what they do. We know Schroeder-Manatee Ranch is behind this move. We know the new Players Centre will be on a valuable piece of land. When you put it all together, it all fits.

“We feel confident this gift could be a catalyst for them.”

Kin said things are starting to take off for the theater’s move to Lakewood Ranch.

“We are starting to see great movement (in fundraising) after a lot of hard work,” Kin said. “The whole process is organic and now things are starting to bloom. We knew this would not be an overnight success. It’s going to take years.”

Jerde said the Community Foundation’s board was impressed The Players already has started programming in Lakewood Ranch, such as the children’s theater that begins Saturday at the Sarasota Polo Club and the outdoor theater performance, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” that is being planned for Oct. 27-28, also at the Sarasota Polo Club in Lakewood Ranch.

“We are thrilled to be a partner in this new chapter of the Players’ long history in Sarasota,” she said.

“What an incredible opportunity to honor the legacy and charitable intention of Muriel O’Neil, a donor who cared so much for supporting our region’s theaters and who enjoyed many performances at The Players.”

Jerde said The Players has committed to finding a way to honor O’Neil’s name at the new complex. What form it will take has not been decided.

The Players Centre at Waterside Place will feature a 480-seat main stage auditorium with balcony seating, a 125-seat black box theatre, a 100-seat cabaret theatre with dining, and the main campus of The Arnold Simonsen Players Studio, which is the education arm of the organization.

The Players began in Sarasota in 1930.

Bianchi and Kin said the $1 million gift will help with some key bills. The Players will pay SMR $750,000 for the 4.5-acre parcel at Waterside Place. The organization also owes a $2 million architecture fee to Westlake Reed and Leskosky and Schenkel/Shultz, which have designed most of the project without being paid.

Lakewood Ranch’s Willis Smith Construction is the project builder.

Keith Pandeloglou, the new director of Lakewood Ranch Community Activities, has taken over as Mr. Parade. Hired into his new position in March, he should be commended for a great effort with so little time to bring everything together.

A few glitches were to be expected.

Since a high school marching band couldn’t be secured for the parade, Pandeloglou decided to ars of long hire a disc jockey and use canned music during the event.

The disc jockey was asked to stop the canned music once the parade began. For whatever reason, it didn’t happen.

Ask the grand marshals, veterans Frank Royer and Hank Lackey, if they felt the parade was important.

Pandeloglou said one of his best memories of the parade will be how happy it made the grand marshals.

If you attended the Lakewood Ranch Community Activities’ Eggstravaganza, or the Tribute to Heroes Parade, you know how passionate Pandeloglou is about making people in our community happy. For that reason, alone, I have faith he will help the parade committee keep this event rolling.

“I was elated by how happy the community felt that day,” he said. “I will listen to the feedback, and I know we have a good committee, and I will listen to them, too. I don’t think I have all the answers.”

Supervisors beef up budget Homeowners will see an average $36 increase in assessments.

Future roadway and irrigation line repairs will be a financial focus for residents of Heritage Harbour heading into 2018.

Supervisors on the Heritage

Harbour South Community Development District, comprising the Lighthouse Cove and Stoneybrook neighborhoods, plan to bulk up reserves — money set aside to cover costs for future roadway and irrigation line repairs or other costs — in the 2017-2018 fiscal year budget.

Supervisors set the operating budget at $461,682 in May, at which time they added $50,000 for reserves based on findings from a study conducted by Florida Reserve Study and Appraisal Inc. for the district.

“The study shows the CDD has a budget deficit for roads and irrigation,” Supervisor George Mosinskis said. “These two are prone to failure. What this means is that we can’t ignore roads or the accumulation of reserves for the roads.”

IN OTHER BUSINESS: n Supervisors discussed talking with Heritage Harbour's developer, Lennar, about requirements for building fourlane sections on River Heritage Boulevard and Heritage Green Way, both of which are two lane roadways. CDD staff members say the roadways originally were planned to be four lanes. Documents show

Manatee County officials may have already released bonds that would have funded the improvement. n The CDD learned its contract with Aquaterra, the developerowned utility that provides irrigation water to Heritage Harbour, runs through April 7, 2021. The agreement allows Aquaterra to move water through CDD-owned irrigation pipes to areas outside the CDD without compensation.

Assuming the budget remains flat in future years, no other hikes are expected, although the $50,000 will be allocated for reserves each year going forward.

At that rate, it will take nine years to reach 50% of reserve levels recommended by the consultant for roads and irrigation infrastructure.

“We are currently funded at about 32% of what is fully needed,” Mosinskis said.

Supervisor Michelle Patterson noted reserves were depleted from 2011 through mid-2013 due to litigation, when Lighthouse Cove at Heritage Harbour and Stoneybrook Investors, owner of the Stoneybrook Golf Club, challenged the new methodology the CDD used to calculate property assessments.

District Manager Greg Cox said, in his experience, reserve studies generally are not precise, but they provide justification to residents for proposed increases in assessment.

SPUD FARM FRACAS 13000 Block of Dickey Road, Parrish Battery: A man and his girlfriend were given a ride by another man to a potato farm where the man had been a longtime employee.

The first man went into the office to collect a check and had a disagreement over the amount of the check with his employer. The woman claimed the employer came out and shut the car door on her hand. The employer and one of his employees told deputies they never went near the car. The man and his girlfriend were asked to leave, which they attempted to do. But then the driver who gave them the ride kicked them out of the car by the farm’s gate. The driver grabbed the woman, dragged her out of the car and splashed water on her from a puddle. The woman declined to fill out an affidavit.

THREE ACES ODA siblings share more than parents: They’re all nationally ranked tennis players.

hey couldn’t stop laughing.

Connor, Jake and Ava Krug, all nationally ranked junior tennis players, sat on their couch alongside Domer, the family golden retriever, on June 6, recounting their biggest messups. They all shared stories, but one of Jake’s got the biggest reaction. During a tournament toward the end of 2016, he tried to hit a gentle drop shot, he said, so it would land just over the net.

The shot went over the baseline by about a foot.

“It was pretty impossible to do,” Jake joked about hitting such a terrible shot.

Even blooming stars make mistakes.

The tennis rankings indicate all three siblings are blooming stars.

USTA TennisLink lists Connor 18th in the Boys 14 national singles rankings, and Jake 43rd. In the site’s doubles rankings, the twin Krug boys, who always play together, sit third (Connor) and fourth (Jake). Ava is ranked 19th in the site’s Girls 12 national singles rankings.

The trio started in tennis thanks to their mother, Sherri Vitale, who played tennis at the University of Notre Dame. She taught them the basics, the kids

said, before passing them onto coach Lance Luciani at Palm Aire Country Club. The kids haven’t played their mother in a real tennis match. Vitale said all three would beat her now.

Over the years, she’s watched them grow into winners. Jake and Connor won the doubles title May 22 at a USTA National Level II event in Arlington, Texas.

Connor reached the finals of the singles bracket, too, and had to beat Jake in the quarterfinals to get there. The twins said they do not approach matches against each other any differently than normal. Ava said she has noticed the energy of matches between her brothers is amplified.

At that same Arlington tournament, Ava reached the Sweet 16 in the singles bracket, and reached the doubles final with partner Liv Hovde of McKinney, Texas.

Their success is a product of hard work as much as it is talent. The boys played baseball and tennis until they turned 12, when they decided to pick one and put all their energy into it. Ava followed their path. There was not one “lightbulb” moment where everything clicked for the Krugs.

Improvement came quickly after giving up other sports, but it’s an ongoing process.

“Tennis is a long road,” Jake said. “You don’t just turn it on. It takes a long time to master.”

“You don’t really know how

good you are until the end (of high school),” Connor added.

Off the court, all three kids are different, though Vitale said all three kids have a bit of her father, Basketball Hall of Fame broadcaster Dick Vitale, in them. They relish the spotlight, she said, both on the court and at school.

Connor is chatty, having no problem breaking into lengthy discussions of his favorite television shows, or his love of pingpong, or how important rest and recovery are for tennis players. He discussed all this while giving his right foot an ice bath.

Jake, the only lefty in the family, is more reserved, leaning against the arm of the couch while waiting to speak, but Vitale said he usually acts like “a goofball.” Despite their differences, the boys hang out together often, playing Xbox or some other activity.

Ava isn’t into Xbox, preferring to watch movies in her room, away from the boys. Once in a while she’ll join them for a round of pingpong, or a game of hide and seek, when not finishing her homework.

That last part is important. All three Krug kids attend The Outof-Door Academy. Connor and Jake will enter ninth grade in the fall, and Ava sixth. That means a full day of classes, plus homework after school. Vitale estimated that 90% of her kids’ competition take online classes, letting them set

their tennis schedules however they would like. The Krugs do not have that luxury. When they miss school for a tournament (which happens often), it means even less practice time when they return, because they’ll have to make up the work. They fit tennis into their academic schedules, not the opposite.

They also have different goals.

Connor is focused on getting his TennisLink ranking as high as possible, in pursuit of a scholarship to a good college. Ava wants to be the best player she can be, and that means not wasting one second of practice time. Jake gets more specific, wanting to “go deep” in a Level I tournament and to win a Level II singles title.

All those smaller goals contribute to a larger one.

“The goal is to be good at 16 or 18,” Vitale said. “You don’t want to peak at 12 or 14. They need to focus on the right things, make practice valuable, and they do.

They love to compete.”

Will enhanced knowledge float your viewing boat?

A

common thread emerged with each of the few experiences I’ve had at rowing events.

I realize I am not sure if there is a proper way to view the sport.

The experiences have been enjoyable, but I don’t have a clue what I should be doing as a spectator. It’s kind of hard to absorb in person, where I don’t have an expert commentator explaining it.

My modus operandi had been to watch the shell in front, with an eye on any shells gaining speed. I usually pick a spot for each race and then I stick to it. Being at the finish line, as I usually am, is great for frantic finishes, but sometimes the race is a blowout. If a shell gets a fantastic start, the race is over well before the finish line, and the drama (and my ability to care) vanishes before the shells come into view.

With the World Rowing Championships coming to Nathan Benderson Park in September, I thought I should get more acquainted with the sport and see if I can find a way to better watch it in person.

The USRowing Youth National Championships, held at the park June 9-11, were a chance to do just that.

I decided to chat with rowers to find out what they watch during a race. The first person I talked to, Sarasota Crew senior rower Isaac Ward, made me

think I knew more than I thought I did.

“I just look at whoever’s in first place,” Ward said. “Also when the boats start their sprint.

You’ll see the boat surge and pick up speed.”

Ward didn’t quite offer the more technical analysis. Sure, watching one boat overtake another is fun, I get that, but what are the athletes in the boat doing to get that surge?

East County’s Jason Shusko, a member of Sarasota Crew’s third-place men’s 8A shell, was able to answer my questions.

“What’s most important is

looking at relative speed, and how fast they (the rowers) are taking strokes,” Shusko said.

“When you are watching the race, the angle is going to be off, so you can’t tell who is winning.

You need to look at how the boat is moving to really get a grasp of what is happening.”

At Nathan Benderson Park, buoys are 10 meters apart. A proper stroke by each rower should carry the shell that distance, Shusko said. If it’s coming up short, it means the rowers are having a weak race. Unless, that is, their stroke rate is high enough to make up the distance.

Endurance is also a factor. A rower’s technique and power can be perfect, but if he or she cannot keep strokes consistent throughout the race, due to fatigue, it’s not easy to win. It’s a nuanced sport, much more than I previously realized.

After speaking with Shusko, I tested my new knowledge. I discovered I could tell if a shell in front was slowing due to fatigue.

I could tell which shells were doomed from the start. It was still hard, however, to tell these things while looking directly at the race. It was much easier to watch races on the Jumbotron placed near the finish line.

A drone captured each race from overhead, so fans could follow the action from start to finish, and watch for the things Shusko mentioned.

Nathan Benderson Park is in a class of its own technologically, Shusko said. He called it a “privilege” to race there all the time. The screen, which was not there at previous rowing events I attended, was a great idea for the Youth Rowing Championships, but perhaps a bad omen for a particular future event at the park.

Throughout the day on June 11, the final day of the championships, swaths of people crowded the Jumbotron to watch races, even taking pictures of rowers on the screen instead of turning 90 degrees to the left and taking a nonpixelated snapshot. Last

week, the NBC Sports Group and the World Rowing Federation announced an exclusive U.S. media rights agreement for NBC Sports to televise more than 10 hours of coverage from the World Rowing Championships, starting Sept. 28, when the finals begin.

Hardcore rowing fans, and family members of the rowers, are going to attend the event no matter what. I just hope, with the televised coverage, area residents still check it out live to enjoy the atmosphere created by the sport, and a world-class facility. The park remains gorgeous, and individual sects of the crowd create excitement with their support. I am certain that energy will be amplified come September. Is that enough to get green fans like myself to come?

Time will tell.

My admiration of the sport continues to grow. I appreciate how much has to go right for a shell to win a race. I had fun gaining the perspective of actual rowers.

To those completely unfamiliar with the sport, it still might be a tough sell. We will see.

Elks host veterans

President Maria Van Brunt passed the gavel to incoming President Lynn Wentworth during the induction ceremony for the new board of the University Park Women’s Club on June 7 at the Concession Golf Club.

Van Brunt thanked the outgoing board for its contributions with special acknowledgements for Second Vice Presidents Anne Walsh and Linda Schauer and member Katy Arrillaga, who handled the arrangements for speakers at the general meetings and luncheons.

The Veterans Committee at Lakewood Ranch Elks Lodge 2855 is hosting a veterans lunch on Tuesday, June 27. A guest speaker, yet to be named, will be provided by the Sarasota National Cemetery.
