recting the walls of many commercial buildings can take months or longer.

Matt Jackson, the owner and project manager of Ed Taylor Construction, can do it in less than a week.

His Tampa-based company specializes in tilt-up construction, where a building’s walls are poured at the job site in large slabs of concrete and raised into position forming the building’s exterior walls. A crane lifts the cured panels into place.

“All these walls went up in four days (after the concrete slabs were allowed to cure),” said Jackson, pointing to a 60,000-squarefoot building in the Gateway Corporate Center in Lakewood Ranch.

Tilt-up construction is the preferred method for the light industrial spaces Harrod Properties is building in its corporate center, located just south of the Crowder Bros. Ace Hardware. The light industrial park has seven buildings, of which three are under construction and four are completed. Two of those under construction will be finished in October. The last, Building 7, which had its walls go up last week, will be finished before year’s end.

Crews are working to install beams and other supports for the roof of Building 7 before beginning interior work.

“This building in its entirety will be started and finished in six months,” said Stephen Racine, vice president of leasing and development for Harrod Properties.

Although walls for tilt-up construction buildings go up quickly, contractors spend weeks prepping. They start by preparing the land and pouring the footings on which the walls will stand.

other infrastructure is installed, crews pour the concrete floor for the building.

That floor is what Ed Taylor Construction uses to build the wall panels. After the floor slab cures, crews draw lines denoting each of the 53 wall panels, making sure to mark where windows and other openings should go in the wall.

Those lines, or guides, are then framed with wood. Rebar is then installed within the wood frame and the floor is sprayed with a material that keeps the newly poured wall from sticking to the floor when the concrete is poured into the wooden frame.

The rebar provides support so the wall doesn’t break. Wall panels, which weigh about 100 tons, cure for about a week before they are structurally sound enough to be moved.

“The reason we put so much rebar in these panels is for the initial lift (by the crane),” Jackson said.

The crane lifts panels individually, placing them on the footings.

There’s a small gap — no bigger than one-half inch — between each to allow room for the concrete to contract and expand as the weather heats up or cools.

After the walls are in place, contractors caulk the gap between them and install support beams to hold the walls in place until the roof can be installed.

Jackson said a similar building would take an additional 10 months or more to complete if constructed with concrete blocks.

“It’s so big,” he said. “That’s a lot of block.”

Racine said the tilt-wall product is different than many of the light manufacturing spaces available on the market. He said others are constructed of metal or concrete block, which is less sturdy if a hurricane or other high-wind storm passes through.

“We’re building a different product,” Racine said. “They’re really bomb shelters. There’s high-resistance glass. The wall thickness is 7 1/4-inch to 9 1/4inch of solid concrete. When a storm comes through, they have assurance the buildings are going to stand.”

Racine said the first four buildings, totaling 320,000 square feet, are 85% leased, and businesses say they are doing well.

“They’re growing,” Racine said, noting many businesses want to relocate closer to where their CEOs and employees live — the Lakewood Ranch area. “We’re getting more demand for product in this market.”

SA Cran CEO Ken Goff has a big plan for improving cellular service in Lakewood Ranch, and he’s got the next 15 months to make it happen.

USA Cran will be the exclusive provider of small cell technologies in Phase 1 Lakewood Ranch, composed of the Greenbrook, Summerfield, Riverwalk, Country Club and Edgewater communities, according to agreements reached Aug. 16.

The small cell technology will take the form of a low-powered cellular structure. It is used to enhance cellular service in areas where there are coverage gaps.

The company now must convince cellular providers the investment in infrastructure is worth making. It needs at least two carriers per small cell to make the project financially viable, Goff said.

“Our aggressive timeline is roughly 15 months from the completion of contracts to systems in the air, and ideally we would complete the construction for all desired sites during this time frame,” Goff said. “There may be a couple of updates after the initial installation, but our goal for the

community is a ‘dig once’ installation policy. The critical component is contracting with the wireless carriers.”

USA Cran approached Lakewood Ranch Community Development Districts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 in December 2016 about becoming the area’s exclusive provider for small cell technology. It has been negotiating with wireless provid-

ers about using the small cells in Lakewood Ranch for the past year, but the agreements finalized last week will help secure deals.

Goff said he hopes to have contracts with wireless providers finalized by the end of the year.

Construction of each small cell, after engineering and permitting is complete, is six months. From there, integration, testing and

taking the systems “on air” would take another 60 days.

Goff said he expects USA Cran, which operates and manages communications infrastructure facilities for the wireless and fiber optics industries, will construct between 13 and 30 small cells, depending on carriers’ needs.

USA Cran will make its small cells look much like light poles.

“Wireless connectivity has changed the way we live, work and play and learn, and as Lakewood Ranch has grown, so has the need for wireless coverage,” USA Cran’s Goff said, noting the public generally has a “not in my backyard” attitude toward tradi-

tional macro cell towers. “(That) leaves many holes of coverage throughout the community as the towers are located on outskirts of said community. … Just from a safety perspective, residents need to have the best wireless coverage possible. The small cell technology would allow for better voice coverage within the ranch and also improve data speeds.”

Other small cell providers could install small cell locations on Manatee County-owned rights of way, but CDD officials hope the agreement will help guarantee any small cell locations within Lakewood Ranch will be as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Executive Director Anne Ross said the agreement with USA Cran contains aesthetic requirements and gives the CDDs final approval of locations.

“We couldn’t press upon them a level of improvement requirement. The intent is that it will improve service,” Ross said.

“We’re not putting any money into it. We’re just providing the land.

“It’s not like our normal construction project,” she added.

“We aren’t in control of the time frame for when they’ll get a commitment, or whether they get a commitment. We have only made available our district-owned property and USA Cran will be in charge of taking the project further.”

Water waste leaks into budget Lakewood Ranch CDDs seek ways to lower irrigation costs.

Supervisors for Lakewood Ranch community development districts hope residents will become water wise when it comes to irrigating their yards.

According to budgets adopted Aug. 16, Lakewood Ranch CDDs 1, 2, 4 and 5 collectively plan to spend about $1.84 million on irrigation water for Phase 1 Lakewood Ranch during the 2018-19 fiscal year. Those figures are up nearly $200,000 from this fiscal year.

Despite the increase, staff members do not recommend implementing a proposed systemwide shutdown of the districts’ irrigation systems during the rainy season when people tend to overwater.

“Conceptually, we’re not opposed to it for conserving water,” Inter-District Authority Operations Director Paul Chetlain said. “But to restore supply, it’s complicated, and there are unintended consequences.”

For more than a year, supervisors and IDA staff have toyed with the idea of a systemwide irrigation shutdown to prevent unnecessary watering within the districts and save an estimated $50,000 or more annually.

lines and distribution to its common areas, as well as to individual properties within the districts.

Irrigation water usage is paid with CDD assessments, although the various homeowners associations enforce watering schedule restrictions.

During the past month, Chetlain met with representatives of irrigation utility Braden River Utilities and landscape contractor Down to Earth to formalize a proposed irrigation shutdown process. It spelled out when the districts could shut off water, the process for doing it and how to bring the system back online.

Based on those findings, the CDDs believe there could be too many problems to justify potential savings. Unintended consequences could include impacts to golf courses within the districts, resident concerns over losing new turf or plantings and the failure of irrigation line pipes and joints because of pressure changes.

Chetlain said there has only been one time this year — a 13-day streak in May — that would have qualified for such a shutdown, and none since then, despite regular afternoon rain showers.

CDD 1 Supervisor Gary Berns was pleased with the information.

“To me, the potential for loss is far greater than a potential gain,” he said of the idea. “But the big gain is we now have the answer to the question (of whether they can do it).”

CDD 4 Supervisor Nancy Johnson said she has had her irrigation system turned off for two months and her lawn looks great. She and other supervisors hope residents will take a proactive approach to conserving water.

“We have to better educate people,” she said. “If I can (turn my system off), anybody can do it.”

County mulls comprehensive plan changes Staff members say too many issues are routed through planned development.

Manatee County Planner Margaret Tusing slid two sheets of paper across a table inside the Innovation Room at the county’s Administration Building.

Both had drawings of residential developments of the same acreage with roughly the same number of homes and almost identical site plans.

The major difference?

One went before the Manatee County Commission for approval as a planned development, while the other was approved administratively through a straight rezoning request.

For a planned development, a public hearing and Manatee County Commission approval are required for rezoning the land and for the project’s site plan. For a rezoning request, there is a public hearing and commission approval, but a site plan is reviewed and approved by county staff only.

Tusing and fellow planner Lisa Barrett say the comprehensive plan is somewhat like looking at Manatee County from an airplane. It’s meant to guide how the county will develop. It sets policy, such as encouraging clustered development and work-

force housing, preserving open space or other planning concepts.

Developed in 1989, it establishes future land uses for any given property so landowners and the public know “future intent” for the property.

The Land Development Code is supposed to be the manual by which county staff executes its policies, prescribing buffer requirements, height restrictions and other measures to ensure developments are compatible with neighboring properties and meets other regulatory and design standards.

If the intent has been approved publicly, is another public approval needed to make sure the new landowners are following code requirements?

Manatee County commissioners will consider the question Aug. 23 along with changes to the comprehensive plan meant to lessen reliance on the planned development approval process.

“Our comprehensive plan has become too much about landuse regulation instead of being broad,” Barrett said.

She said changes coming forward are meant to simplify processes.

For example, when developers submitted plans for the RaceTrac gas station at the southwest corner of Lena Road and State Road 64, they applied to rezone the land from agriculture to mixeduse, the property’s future landuse category. Then they had to go through the planned development process, submitting a pre-

tor John Barnott said having too many planned developments creates challenges.

“We have hundreds and hundreds of them,” he said of planned developments. “What we’re trying to do is establish a predictable process. It’s not to give the farm away, as some people think.”

“There’s a conception that planned development is better than standard zoning,” said Tusing. “At the end of the day, (the outcome) is the same.”

Some residents don’t feel it is the same.

Tara resident Cathy Woolley said developers of a hotel within Tara’s boundaries, at the south-

west corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 70, wanted to have a building height higher than allowed by Tara’s development approvals. She and three other residents voiced their concerns against it during the May 3 public hearing for the project.

“You really need to be sure the bigger changes are heard by our elected officials,” Woolley said.

Woolley said no one involved in the administrative process is there to protect the homeowners like commissioners.

Fellow Tara resident John Leone agreed.

“If you get into the administrative portion of it, rather than public hearings, people don’t know what’s going on in their backyard until whatever’s going on breaks ground,” he said.

What he expects: Cesser said he applied knowing what kind of pressure it would put on him.

“There’s a pressure, but I chose this,” Cesser said. “People I supervise are counting on me, and the people I’m protecting count on me. Everyone who graduated has a 100% dedication to this program.”

Assigned school: Braden River Elementary Experience: Radle spent 23 years as a captain with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

He also worked as a U.S. Air Force security policeman for four years.

Why he applied: “I think it’s my calling to want to do this kind of work. It’s not for everybody, and we all have 20 to 30 years of experience in law enforcement of some kind.”

What he expects: “Our training is above and beyond what anyone would expect. There’s not much difference in the way a student resource officer would act and the way a guardian would act in a school because the training is so similar.”

What he expects: “My kids Samantha (11th grade) and Jason (10th grade) are Lakewood Ranch High School students, and my other daughter Madison (eighth grade) is a Carlos E. Haile Middle School student. The most important thing that I want people to know is that they have to give the program time to work itself out. In our graduating class, I know I’m not the only one with kids, but I feel good knowing that every single one of these guardians would do what’s needed to be done.”

The first group of school security guards graduated Aug. 16 in a special ceremony at the district’s administrative offices. They were trained by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Acting Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said the guardians will provide a safe academic environment for students.

Here is a look at four of the new guardians who will be protecting the area’s children.

School: Myakka Elementary School Experience: Retired after 20 years as a Sheriff’s Office sergeant in Middlesex County in New Jersey.

Why he applied: “I learned I like hanging out with the students after I volunteered with kids doing community service, and I want to give back to the community.”

What he expects: “I want to give parents a sense of security. We saw that need and we filled it.”

ON GUARD What: The School District of Manatee County had 20 school security guards (guardians) graduate from a Sheriff’s Office training program.

Where: The guardians will be assigned to 20 elementary schools in the district.

When: Graduation was Aug. 16 and the guardians began work Aug. 20 Experience: Every guardian had previous military or police experience, with most working more than 20 years in the field.

Training course: Each guardian had 144 hours of training, with all but 10 hours related to the use of firearms.

Cost of training: $1,275 per guardian Next class: The final 20 guardians will complete training and begin service Sept. 17.

Couple enjoys grade A motorcycle adventure I

t was early during a five-week motorcycle trip of a lifetime for Mill Creek’s Mary and Ron Quinn when they pulled into Amarillo, Texas, after a full, hot day on the highway.

Ron kept remembering the signs they kept passing, advertising The Big Texan Steak Ranch’s “free 72-ounce steak.”

Mary was hungry, but there was no way she was leaving the hotel and getting back on highway for a 20-mile ride to The Big Texan.

As fate would have it, their hotel room had a flyer for a free limo ride to the restaurant. The full-stretch limo showed up shortly later, and off they went.

“It had these big horns on the front” Mary said. “And air conditioning. I was in heaven.”

The 72-ounce steak was only free if you ate the entire meal in an hour (you don’t have to eat the fat), so that wasn’t on the table, but their significantly smaller steak dinner ended up being their best meal on their trip to see America.

The dinner just off Interstate 40 on old Route 66 was just one highlight of the trip that began June 27 and lasted through July 30 when they pulled back into their driveway, 7,300 miles later.

While Ron and Mary rode on their 1400 cc Kawasaki, their son, Kyle, accompanied them on his Honda 600 cc bike.

I should note at this point that Mary is 62 and Ron is 66.

Sure, that’s young in today’s world, but the fact is neither would have attempted such a grind if they hadn’t been in shape.

Mary, a physical education teacher at Robert Willis Elementary, preaches all the time to her kindergarten through fifth-grade students they need to be physically fit if they want to enjoy

life’s finer offerings.

“I want to be a good role model for my students,” Mary said. “If I am going to preach this, I should be.

“I tell the students, ‘You should try to see this country ... it’s beautiful. Instead of watching TV and texting, experience it. If you are in shape, you will be able to do it.’”

Although Mary and Ron had backpacked through Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia over the previous two years, they had yet to discover the western U.S., and all it has to offer.

“Kyle had bugged us to do this,” said Ron, a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. “I bought this bike in 2014 with the idea of taking this trip.”

Both Mary and Ron, who celebrated their 40th anniversary Aug. 13, realized being on a motorcycle for such a long time would require conditioning. That wasn’t a problem since Mary is a competitive runner (she formerly ran for the Adidas running team and she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon in 1984). They both are members of Vertical Ventures, a climbing gym with facilities in St. Petersburg and Tampa.

“We are some of the oldest climbers,” Mary said. “But the college kids are impressed and people look up to us. I feel proud of that.”

Even being in shape, Mary admitted the trip wasn’t easy.

“This was a little challenging,” she said with a big smile. “Just sitting on a bike for 400 miles, and it was hot. At times I was feeling sleepy, and you can’t fall asleep. At times it was monotonous. Some air conditioning would have been nice. Then there were parts were it was freezing.”

Sitting on their couch at home, they locked eyes as Mary did some minor whining. Ron’s point is that it wouldn’t be a thrilling vacation without some hardships.

“We don’t sit by the pool and drink margaritas,” Ron said.

The payoff came in the form of 15 national parks, five weeks of adventure, family time with Kyle and simple pleasures such as The Big Texan.

They went as far as Colorado Springs, Colo., leaving California and points farther west for next year’s trip.

Another highlight? Mary was able to stand on a corner in Winslow, Ariz., for those of you out there who are Eagles fans.

Their longest leg of the trip was 475 miles. They often took 18- to 20-mile hikes. They went on a four-wheel-drive adventure in Moab, Utah.

“It was awesome,” said Mary, who met Ron when they were

growing up in New Jersey. “I was blown away by the beautiful mountains, the colors. You see the open space for miles and miles ... Holy cow!

“I think my favorite place was Bryce Canyon and all the hoodoos (thin spires of rock). I never knew about hoodoos. I felt like I was on a different planet.”

They say they can’t wait to get out on their next adventure, and as they preach, they will stay active so they can enjoy the next trip, and the next, and the next.

“We haven’t even scratched the surface,” Ron said.

It would seem to be a service more fitting for a five-star restaurant.

But Publix customers in Lakewood Ranch are being treated to valet parking in an experiment by the grocery store chain that seems to be working.

Publix stores often are located in busy complexes where competition for parking spaces can be heated. The valet service is aimed at easing those concerns.

It also can keep Publix shoppers dry during a storm or help those with mobility problems, even if an available parking spot is only 100 feet away.

Mill Creek resident Anthony Luh uses the valet service two to three times a week at the Publix on State Road 64 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. That particular parking lot often is packed with customers at the other businesses and restaurants in the shopping center.

“For me, it’s like a dangerous parking lot,” Luh said. “There’s a lot of bad drivers and if I use the valet service, then I don’t have to worry about getting hit. I can just come out of the store and my car is here.”

Lakewood Ranch’s June Jackson, an avid Publix shopper, has often used the new, free service at

the Publix on the corner of State Road 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard since it started June 30.

“It’s just so convenient,” Jackson said. “I sure am hoping that it sticks around. I told all my neighbors about it.”

Publix has begun to use the service in two of its Lakewood Ranch locations after debuting the service in its stores in Tampa, according to Publix spokesman Brian West.

“We try to do everything we can to make sure the shopping experience is convenient, especially if it’s raining or if there are elderly people who need assistance,” West said. “We’re testing it out indefinitely.”

West said all vehicles are allowed to use the valet service.

Publix usually has two valets on duty, and the service is available from opening to close.

Jackson said it is easier on her body.

“I have a bad back, bad knees and bad legs,” Jackson said. “It’s hard to walk across the parking lot for me. My husband, Fred, and I don’t shop anywhere else now.”

Daniel Elmaleh and his three kids, 5-year-old twins Ashley and Amber and 2-year-old Aubrey, used the valet service for the first time this week.

“With three kids ... it’s a safety issue for us to walk through the parking lot because you never know what any of them are going to do,” Elmaleh said. “So far, it’s working pretty smoothly.”

hen School District of Manatee County administrators were planning the 2018-19 school year budget, they didn’t expect they would have fewer students in the system considering countywide growth patterns.

They might not have accurately forecast the effect of Hurricane Irma.

Heather Jenkins, chief financial officer for the district, said enrollment in the system is down 293 students from a year ago.

The district receives $4,200 per student from the state, equaling $1,230,600 less for the school year.

“This is normal after there’s a bad storm like the one we had last fall,” Jenkins said. “Students leave and don’t come back in those years.”

Although the district doesn’t have proof of why students left the area, they say bad storms have caused that effect in previous years.

“We do not know exactly why there was a decrease in students, because there had been a growth trend,” Barber said. “We are looking to see if this is a blip or the start of something different.

Nobody can say for certain what the reason was.”

The School District of Manatee County has set a tentative budget of $820,522,314 that will be up for approval Sept. 4 by the school board. That budget reflects a reduction of the $1,230,600 for the lower enrollment.

Aside from the expected short-

fall from the fall in student enrollment, Jenkins said the district has no major concerns with the rest of the budget.

Teacher pay raises account for $19 million in the budget, but that increase is covered by the 1 mill increase in property tax.

The district’s biggest expense continues to be construction costs as it builds three schools, including Dr. Mona Jain Middle School in Lakewood Ranch, to open for the 2019-20 school year.

The district spent $24,613,993 on construction in 2017-18 and has projected $26,420,122 this school year.

“It’s not normal for us to have

all of this construction going on at the same time, and it can get expensive,” Jenkins said. “Our last school built was (G.D. Rogers Garden Elementary School), and it was in 2009. It’s a fair amount of money, but it will be worth it when students see schools like North River being built for the future.”

Jenkins said the district has $119 million in its discretionary fund.

“I don’t really feel like we made any tough decisions when it came to planning the budget,” Jenkins said. “We just keep going. We watch our money like a hawk.”

SEEKING SPRINKLER STOMPER 4500 block of 62nd Terrace East, Bradenton Criminal mischief: A man contacted the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to report an unknown person had broken his sprinkler pipe. For most races, losing 600 competitors in a year’s time would signal problems.

Not so for the second annual Fort Hamer Bridge Run on Aug. 25.

The unique experience of running across a bridge about to open to traffic for the first time in 2017 drew approximately 2,600 runners. This year’s run is expected to draw about 2,000 runners, a healthy number for a young event held in the summer.

is a novelty,” said race organizer Doug Schiller. “The views are spectacular. But this year, it will be almost entirely local people.”

Schiller expects the race to set a record for number of participants next year when the race moves to March 30, to escape the summer heat. He expects more than 3,000 runners for the 2019 event.

A children’s race kicks off this year’s festivities at 6:45 a.m. Aug. 25 followed by a 5K, a 10K and a 1-mile walk. The Fort Hamer Bridge will close from 6:30-10 a.m. to accommodate the event.

The 10K race begins on the Parrish side of the bridge at Fort Hamer Park, heads south, and eventually goes through the Waterlefe Golf and Country Club before turning around and going north back over the bridge. On the Parrish side, the runners will proceed through the River Wilderness neighborhood before returning to Fort Hamer Park. The 5K runners follow the same route, but head back to Fort Hamer Park back after crossing the bridge.

The race will benefit the Parrish YMCA, the Parrish Foundation and Manatee County Youth Rowing.

Schiller said the fun begins after the race ends. Fourteen restaurants are hosting booths at the after-party.

He said the best spots to cheer for the runners will be on either end of the bridge.

“Last year, we couldn’t even get on the bridge until 5 a.m. because it was still privately owned by the builder, and the bridge wasn’t open yet,” Schiller said. “This year, we’ll be able to set up viewing areas and have a little bit more organization because the county owns the bridge.”

New area for opera Sarasota Youth Opera opens beginner classes in Lakewood Ranch.

C

rossing Creek 12-year-old Olivia DeGrave has some experience singing.

But she has never sung quite like this.

“I did choir in elementary school at Tara, but this is a different kind of singing,” DeGrave said of the Sarasota Youth Opera lessons she is taking at the Harvest United Methodist Church.

“I really like the way that it is different, like how you had to know when to breathe and the different vowels and stuff.”

DeGrave and nine other middle school students have been the first to give the new opera class a try. They warmed up on their first day with the American folk song, “Oh, Shenandoah.”

Ben Jewell-Plocher, director of education at the Sarasota Opera House, decided to host lessons in Lakewood Ranch because the drive to the Sarasota Opera House might be a deterrent for aspiring opera singers in East County.

“We’ve been thinking about doing classes in Lakewood Ranch for about three years, and we’re finally getting out here with the right host and the right number of employees,” Jewell-Plocher said.

“There’s about a third of our opera audience that is coming from this

area that we feel could be served better. It’s only going to get harder (to make the trip) with the growth of our community. It’s not easy to say I’m going to drive to the opera house from Lakewood Ranch.”

Neipwi Rousan, a 10-year-old who lives in Parrish, was one of the students taking the class at Harvest United.

“I play the ukulele and I dance,” Rousan said. “I want to try something that isn’t normal and opera sounds kind of cool. Singing makes me feel happy and good about myself; I am definitely going to take more classes.”

The classes are held each Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. for third- through fifth-grade students and from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for sixth- through eighth-graders.

The tuition for the classes is $175 for the semester, and there will be multiple performances of “The Little Sweep” the class will

perform in November at the Sarasota Opera House. The Harvest class will combine with those taking lessons in downtown Sarasota in October to make final preparations for “The Little Sweep.”

Classes will be open for enrollment until the end of August in Lakewood Ranch.

Tara’s Janet Bloom brought her 10-year-old granddaughter, Molly Rindermann, to the class.

“I honestly don’t know if this will materialize into anything,” Bloom said. “I heard about it because I attend church at Harvest. Molly has a loud voice, so I thought I would see if she likes using it in a productive way.”

DeGrave’s mother, Heather DeGrave, said if the classes weren’t in Lakewood Ranch, she wouldn’t consider it.

“It would just be too far of a drive for us,” said Heather DeGrave. “But I know that she will like this. She is an arts kid,

he Out-of-Door Academy may be small, but it has an advantage when it comes to coaching.

The Thunder has a former NFL star for a friend.

Pro Bowl running back Earnest Byner is helping the players prepare for the season.

Byner, who lives mainly in Nashville, Tenn., stays on Siesta Key with his wife, Tina Byner, during the summer. He first came to the area three years ago to speak at a Palmetto High football event.

Palmetto coach Dave Marino asked him if he had any interest in coaching the team’s running backs.

That didn’t work out, but the idea stuck in Byner’s mind.

When he met then-ODA head coach Ken Sommers at a Pope Golf event later that summer, Sommers offered Byner a similar position, and he accepted.

Now Byner is thrilled he said yes.

“I fell in love with ODA,” he said.

“The culture here is outstanding.

It’s making not just better players, but better men.”

Byner has done it all in his career, racking up 8,261 rushing yards and 4,605 receiving yards over 14 years and reaching the Pro Bowl twice with the Washington Redskins in 1990 and 1991.

Following his playing career, he coached running backs with the Redskins, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for nine seasons.

He gets “stirred up” when he can pass on the knowledge that coaches like Joe Gibbs and Marty Schottenheimer taught him.

What is one of the most important tips he learned in the NFL? He said it is to give your absolute best in everything you do, and challenge yourself every day.

“I love when something ‘clicks’ in players,” Byner said. “It’s the same energy, no matter the level of football. It’s healing for me.”

First-year ODA head coach Chris Kempton called Byner a “salt of the Earth” person and said he’s glad to have him helping at practice. Byner, in turn, said he believes Kempton is going to do great things with the program.

Junior ODA running back Jarred Flahive said he didn’t know all of Byner’s accomplishments when they met at a 2015 practice, just that he had played in the NFL and was “an insane football player.”

Flahive was nervous talking to him

at first, but quickly became comfortable thanks to Byner being “the nicest guy in the world.” The two are close now, Flahive said.

The biggest thing Byner has worked to improve in Flahive is footwork. Flahive said he’s trying to perfect a “1-2 step” juke to avoid defenders. He’s also keeping his center of gravity lower during runs to maintain a leverage advantage. It seems to be working: Flahive ran for 61 yards on eight carries in the team’s 16-8 spring game win May 17 against Evangelical Christian.

“Most of that (improvement) is because of him,” Flahive said.

Byner coached ODA through the preseason, and will be back “off and on” to help the team during the regular season. Whether he’s in town or in Nashville, he said, he will be monitoring its progress.

Former Pirate earns college starting role S

ome football players love the spotlight.

Others would love to wear a disguise to dodge an interview.

Appalachian State left guard Ryan Neuzil falls closer to the second group, though I was able to get him on the phone following an Aug. 11 practice. He prefers to stay incognito, he said, and let the skill position players get the praise. All he wants to do is play.

Play, he will. Neuzil, a redshirt sophomore, graduated from Braden River High in 2016 and plays alongside a fellow 2016 Pirate grad, quarterback Jacob Huesman. While Huesman will be backing up sophomore Zac Thomas under center, Neuzil is the frontrunner to start at left guard after a strong close to his 2017 season.

Before Neuzil entered the lineup on Nov. 4 against the University of Louisiana-Monroe, the Mountaineers averaged 184 rushing yards per game (eight games). In the five games after, including a 34-0 thumping Dec. 23 of the University of Toledo in the Dollar General Bowl, they averaged 286. It’s a point of pride for Neuzil to run block as well as he does.

“It’s rewarding to push your man off the play when you are one-on-one,” Neuzil said. “It’s more exciting (than pass blocking).”

Neuzil came to Appalachian State as a center, but coaches asked him to switch to guard last season. A year later, Neuzil said he feels confident at the position. Center has more “weight on your shoulders,” he said, calling protections and making sure everyone’s doing their job. At guard, he can focus on mauling.

The bowl game was Neuzil’s favorite moment of his career, despite having to take his bowl vacation to Mobile, Ala. The year before, playing in the Camellia Bowl against Toledo, the team traveled to Montgomery, Ala. “It would have been nice to go to New Orleans or a place like that,” Neuzil said, laughing. “But it’s still a bowl game. We still took it seriously.”

Before the game, Neuzil said, coaches pulled some social media comments that said Toledo was too good to be playing in the game, and would wipe the floor with the Mountaineers.

Once the team heard that, it was game on, he said.

“The year before (when redshirting), I didn’t feel part of the bowl win,” Neuzil said. “Last year, I felt like I earned it. It was amazing.”

Neuzil said the win gives the team confidence heading into this season, but at the same time, it’s a different team with different leaders. Last year’s Mountaineers had three AllSun Belt Conference linemen in

Beau Nunn, Colby Gossett and Victor Johnson. Only Johnson, a junior, returns to the team in 2018. Neuzil said the offensive line feels a responsibility to match the level of the departed seniors and show the world that Appalachian State O-lines don’t mess around, especially in the run game.

They don’t mess around with food, either. Neuzil said coaches will host position group dinners once a week, with foods varying between chicken, hot dogs, bratwurst, etc. If the group did especially well, like it did once

Neuzil entered the lineup last season, they’ll get steak.

For Neuzil’s sake, I hope he likes red meat, because if he reaches the all-conferences team like he hopes, he could be eating a lot of it.

The glow sticks he wore as circles around his ears and a chain around his neck gave the perfect amount of colored light for the occasion.

“I like the color,” Evan said.

He and more than 30 other middle schoolers in GreyHawk Landing gathered for a Middle School Dance Party, hosted by the GreyHawk Landing Events Group.

Children enjoyed dancing, glowin-the-dark paint for their arms and faces, pingpong games and pizza and other food treats during the event.

New cell therapy technology offered Prism Light Pod has joined with Lakewood Ranch Medical Massage, 7357 International Place, No. 101, to be the first in Florida to offer full-body cold laser therapy.

Lakewood Ranch Medical Massage owner Lizz Pugh said the system is a complement to the multifaceted massage therapy already offered by her company.

Pugh’s husband, Jay, had been using handheld cell therapy, delivered with a wand, to combat his rheumatoid arthritis. That therapy led them to discover the Prism Light Box, which Lakewood Ranch Medical Massage made available Aug. 1.

It delivers cold light therapy to the full body after the patient gets into a pod. Red LED lights provide cellular therapy.

Pugh said the therapy has been found to speed sports injury recovery, reduce chronic pain and disorders, improve wound and injury healing and lessen inflammation from arthritis and joint pain.

Florida Cancer Specialists breaks ground in CORE Florida Cancer Specialists broke ground July 31 on a cancer center that will add expanded services to its existing Lakewood Ranch location adjacent to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

The new center will be located in the Collaboration Opportunities for Research and Exploration (CORE) park north and east of the intersection of State Road 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard..

Florida Cancer Specialist CEO Brad Prechtl said the 12,500-square-foot center has a planned opening of June 2019.

It will offer standard services, such as a pharmacy, lab work and infusions, and also CT scans and clinical research treatments, according to a release.

Florida Cancer Specialists participated in trials for 74% of the cancer drugs that came to market in 2016 and 2017, Prechtl said.

Halfacre earns Gene Witt contract The School District of Manatee County has awarded a contract to Lakewood Ranch’s Halfacre Construction to build an additional structure at Gene Witt Elementary School.

The $20 million contract also calls for renovation of the existing buildings at 200 Rye Road E., Bradenton, and site work to clear a 7-acre parcel to add play fields,

Injuries to the great toe At the end of follow through, the great toe of the dominant foot experiences an increase in pressure. This can cause a jamming of the toe into the top of the shoebox. With repetition, the area under the toenail can become injured causing blood to form or the nail to lift from the nail bed. These types of injuries should not be taken lightly. Even though the toe is a small portion of the body, if not treated injuries to this area can cause significant pain, infection and loss of function. Wearing proper fitting shoes and adjustments in the golf swing to prevent the irritation of the nail is necessary to eliminate recurrence.

BUILD YOUR GAME FROM THE GROUND UP A powerful, and effective golf swing starts with a stable foundation. From a solid foundation the entire swing can be leveraged and a low handicap status can be achieved. The important but often overlooked foundation, are pain free and wellfunctioning feet and ankles.

While there is a lot of discussion about back, hip and knee injuries in golf, most golf instructors will tell you that the power of a swing is created “from the ground up”.

body needs to be the stable foundation for the upper body during the rotation required for the backswing and the trail foot is expected to remain relatively stable during this rotation. The lateral, or outside of the ankle is a common site of injury for golfers and other athletes alike.

Repetitive strain will cause laxity of the lateral ankle ligaments and predispose that ankle to easier spraining. Sprains of the ligaments can lead to weakness and a lack of stability in the golf swing and while walking on the uneven terrain of a golf course.

Golfing is a highly coordinated sport that, by its nature, is associated with risk of repetitive motion injuries. Being intentional about maintaining good foot form and taking care of a stable foundation can keep golfers free of injury and enjoy years on the course.
