I

may not have a child officially in school yet, but I’m starting to better understand the bittersweet moments that come with it.

In some ways, it’s sad to see our children grow up, but it is so exciting as they make friends and explore the world around them.

I remember a few months ago, when my 3-year-old son, Elliott, was playing with magnets with his friends at day care. Instead of his normal enthusiastic shout of “Mommy!,” he instead nearly shrieked in horror.

“But I wanted to play!” he lamented.

The magnets had stolen his attention and he pleaded that I instead go pick up his little sister first.

Little did I know, in that moment, there would be many similar moments to come.

I’ve come to realize that when our children love to learn and try new things, it doesn’t get much more exciting.

And now, we are on the cusp of learning in Manatee County. We know how hard our educators and students work, and it is a privilege to share their stories and accomplishments each year.

I

would like to welcome you to William H. Bashaw Elementary School, the school that focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics — STEAM — instruction.

This means our students are the only ones in our district to attend a school that demonstrates a daily focus on STEAM. Our school has been provided with four grants that have supported our move to being a staterecognized STEAM school.

Students should also be prepared to have the appropriate uniform attire. The PTO will host a uniform sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 3 and at Back to School Night from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 8.

A message from the superintendent I am excited to welcome our students, families and community to the 20172018 school year. I know our teachers, school administrators and other district employees are ready and eager to get going.

One of the most important things I have learned in my two years as superintendent of the School District of Manatee County is we will never be a perfect school district. We will always have our challenges, and sometimes challenges can be daunting.

However, I believe the greatness of this school district lies in the ability of our students and employees to accomplish remarkable things even in the face of those challenges.

With that said, I would like

to share with you some of our successes. Seniors in the Class of 2017 earned more than $17 million in scholarships and were accepted into more than 200 colleges and universities across America, as well as every branch of the U.S. military.

In addition, 22 of our schools improved their individual school grades compared to the previous year; 81% of our schools received an A, B or C grade; and for the first time since 2009, not one of our 59 schools received a failing grade from the state.

In addition, Manatee students continue to qualify, compete and excel in state and national academic competitions. During the previous school year, students brought home first-place and top 10 trophies in competitions such as SkillsUSA, TSA, HOSA, Odyssey of the Mind and VEX Robotics.

Here at school, several things have been occurring.

When you come back, you will see an all-new inside to our school. Every classroom and all the hallways have new carpet or tile. The place is beautiful. Teachers have been preparing for the students, as well. We will be ready to start our learning on day one.

I also want to thank our Parent Teacher Organization and School Advisory Counsel for leading the way in upgrading the technology in our classrooms. All of our

fifth-grade classrooms have state of the art Promethean Boards up and running, and our fourth-grade classrooms will have all of theirs installed during the first few months of school. Thank you to everyone for making our technology goal a reality for our students.

For families new to Freedom, we want you to be aware of a few programs our school offers to our students. The first program is our National Elementary Honor Society, as well as our award-winning Technology Student Association engineering program.

Both of these programs

provide opportunities for our students to excel in their academics.

Finally, we have our Beyond the Bell extendedday program to support our families with child care needs before and after school. The program is run by Freedom teachers and staff, so families can be assured their children will have a safe, educational and fun time while in the program.

uring the upcoming D school year, School District of Manatee County

Superintendent Diana Greene will be preparing for changes in Manatee County’s educational landscape.

In response to the population boom in East County, the district will be adding a new middle school adjacent to B.D. Gullett Elementary and building new wings at Lakewood Ranch High School and Gullett, Robert E. Willis and Gene Witt elementary schools. Greene said she hopes all of them can be open

by August 2019.

How is the school district alleviating overcrowded at schools such as Lakewood Ranch and Braden River high schools, and what is the impact on other schools?

(At several schools we) are adding wings — they might have six, eight, 10 or 12 classrooms, basically expansions — that will hopefully open in

2019, but a couple will open in 2020. So not only are we building three new schools, we’re building a new wing at B.D. Gullett Elementary, Robert Willis Elementary School, along with a renovation of Gene Witt Elementary School, as well as the addition of a wing to support 200 students at Witt Elementary.

We will also add a wing to Lakewood Ranch High School that will support the addition of 200 students, because even with the new high school, that still will not draw down the numbers enough at Lakewood Ranch High.

Will this alleviate overcrowding at schools?

I just know we feel like we keep having to build. We say three new schools, but I'm more nervous about another year now and us potentially needing another school.

We will relieve some of the schools that are overcrowded, but I believe they will still be at capacity. Nolan Middle School is 120% of capacity.

When we build a new middle school, Nolan will still be at 95% capacity. It will be right back at near capacity. The concern is that more students are still coming, and how do we make sure that we can serve all of our students until those new facilities open up?

How many students are enrolled this year?

We expect we will go over the 49,000 mark. We are one of the fastest-growing school districts in the state — I think we’re No. 3. This is a beautiful place to live, and we are right in the middle of Hillsborough County and Sarasota County — I think the cost of living is a little less here.

So one, it’s a beautiful place to come live and work, and

two, the cost of living in this area is probably less. We are anticipating that we will have 800 to 1,000 new students this upcoming school year.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch has offered a land swap with the school district for a proposed high school site near Premier Sports Complex. What do you think about that?

That is still in conversation.

For us, the important thing is whether that location is a viable location. Is it going to help offset (overcrowding) at Lakewood Ranch High School? For us, the location is all about accessibility, how will it impact the current schools that are located in East County, and making sure that we can balance, not empty out Lakewood Ranch High School. We want to make sure that this high school is going to be able to support that growth.

The $17 million project will begin during the 2018-2019 fiscal year and will be a similar to a renovation that William H. Bashaw Elementary School completed at the end of the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Money from the half-cent sales tax referendum voters approved last November provided funding for the project.

The renovation will include changes and enhancements to the gymnasium, auditorium, roof, playground, cafeteria and about eight additional classrooms.

Construction on the new wing will start simultaneously with the renovation. However, Ford said the size of the addition is determined by the growth around the school.

“We are not sure what the wing size will be,” Ford said.

“We will take a look at what the need is in that area, and we will create according to what that growth pattern looks like at that time.”

elcome to Imagine School at Lakewood Ranch. I am pleased to be serving my sixth year as the school leader of Imagine Lakewood Ranch, and we are honored to welcome students and families to our campus for the upcoming school year.

This year we are continuing our focus of providing rigorous instruction and increasing student engagement. This will result in high academic performance and provide a wealth of positive experiences for our students.

For the 2017-2018 school year, we are implementing a new, innovative computer class that incorporates science, technology, engineering and math activities and projects aligned with the 21st century learning skills necessary for students’ success.

At Imagine LWR, we strive to produce well-rounded students that receive a high quality education in conjunction with our new acceleration model, Success Hour, as well as participate in meaningful lessons to build character.

Making the grade Manatee County School District Deputy Superintendent for Instructional Services Cynthia Saunders says she is pleased with the academic improvement children are showing.

Grades released by the Florida Department of Education in July show the school district improved overall from a “C” to a “B,” with no individual schools earning a grade of “F.” “We had progress across the board,” Saunders said.

In East County, eight of 14 schools earned “A” grades, while three each earned “B” and “C” grades, respectively.

The district will provide additional support to schools that need it, Saunders said.
