A touch of comfort
Local children who have to go to the Sarasota Memorial ER at Lakewood Ranch will receive more than medical care, thanks to The Lake Club Women’s Giving Circle. They’ll receive a toy, too. The giving circle members dropped off nearly 500 “comfort toys” to the ER this month. The toys are meant to ease fear and provide a distraction to children during their visits. Children account for approximately 10% of the ER’s patients, so about seven children are seen in the ER each day. Natalia and Yara Alokeh (above) are not patients, but as the daughters of medical professionals, Dr. Yael and Jennifer Alokeh (a giving circle member), they were happy to help deliver toys.

Lighting the Path
Kisha Sizemore and Toni McLeroy (above), employees in the dental department at State College of Florida, were among the medical professionals to gather at Grove in Lakewood Ranch on May 12 for the Lighting the Path Healthcare Luncheon. In its inaugural event, the State College of Florida Foundation brought together heathcare professionals, community members and partners who are making a difference. State College of Florida offers programs in dental hygiene, nursing, occupational therapy and more. “It’s not just about the education,” said Tommy Gregory, president of the State College of Florida. “It is the legacy and the impact they’re going to have on this entire community.”
