YOUR TOWN BIRTHDAY BASH

AMANDA SEBASTIANO STAFF WRITER EAST COUNTY — During the seven months Jason Jenkins was homeless, he didn’t want to be a burden to the friends who let him stay on their couches. So, when the 37-year-old cooked something in his friends’ homes, the meal had to be cheap and easy. “I mostly cooked pasta, pasta and more pasta,” Jenkins said. “I loved to cook, but I didn’t want to dirty up their dishes or be in someone else’s space. But pasta is simple and relatively cheap. By adding different sauces, you can make completely different tasting meals.” After six years in the U.S. Army that included tours in Germany, Hungary and Bosnia, the veteran struggled to hold a job and residence, which led to his becoming homeless. Today, Jenkins doesn’t worry about the price tag of the food he

Department engineers have determined construction of a roundabout at the location is feasible, would improve traffic flow and eliminate cuing problems along Rye Road. VETS 2 CHEFS: New beginnings In the past, U.S. Army veteran Jason Jenkins held a range of positions in the restaurant industry. He worked as a waiter, expediter, bar back and other roles at restaurants. After enrolling in the Vets 2 Chefs program last year, which teaches veterans basic cooking skills, he rekindled his passion for cooking. Now, the East County resident plans to attend a local culinary school in May by using money from the G.I. Bill, which provides financial aid for military veterans to attend school. He hopes to advance his cooking skills and eventually run a kitchen at a restaurant. Jenkins doesn’t need to own his own restaurant, but he hopes to be a head chef or kitchen manager who works closely with the managerial side of the restaurant industry. Cooking feels like the career he was meant to have, he said.

prepares, or where he’s cooking it. He traded generic brands of boxed pasta for seafood and grilled foods. Last month, he received a full-time position as a line cook at the Sandhill Grill, located inside the clubhouse of The Players Club Prestancia in Sarasota. The job helped him secure a home with a kitchen of its own. Jenkins is the first member of the Vets 2 Chefs program, based out of the Culinary Innovation Lab on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, to receive a full-time job at a local restaurant. Jenkins heard about the program from representatives at the Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the Suncoast. “I felt like I didn’t know what was next,” Jenkins said. “I was wishing I had stayed in the military and still do sometimes. I was having a hard time readjusting. I needed direction.” Vets 2 Chefs is a program designed to help military veterans find jobs. The founder of the program, Bryan Jacobs, who is also a University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee student, and Jenkins met through the program last year. “I’m really proud of the veterans who go through the program,” Jacobs said. “It teaches them valuable skills to help them re-enter the work force.” Learning to make homemade Hollandaise sauce and soups and how to properly clean and cut the contents of a salad are Vets 2 Chefs tools Jenkins believes helped him obtain his full-time job.

Whether he’s cooking on a limited budget or working behind a grill at The Players Club Prestancia, U.S. Army veteran Jason Jenkins loves seeing the meal he creates with a few ingredients.

The recommendation from Jacobs to Prestancia managers didn’t hurt either, Jenkins added. “I learned a lot more about cooking, yes,” Jenkins said. “But I also learned about cleaning techniques and being confident in my skills. Chef Bryan was an inspiration to me; he didn’t try to break us down. He helped me.” NEXT COURSE

Jenkins works 30 to 40 hours per week at Prestancia and also works part time at a local Applebee’s to afford about $400 for his portion of rent at the East County apartment he shares with a roommate.

Jenkins is involved with the JFCS’ Operation Military Assistance Program that links veterans to local resources, such as Vets 2 Chefs, and helps them find homes in the area. JFCS paid the security deposit and other fees associated with the apartment Jenkins moved into a few months ago. He pays monthly rent, along with his cell phone bill and half of his water and electric bills. He doesn’t have a car, and often gets a ride to work from friends or rides his bike to the country club. Transportation is an important item on his list of to-dos; he plans to own his own vehicle in

the future, he added. Overall, his outlook is improving since he got his full-time cooking job, and he’s working toward self-sufficiency, he said. He works six days a week cooking in someone else’s kitchen. And, he’s happy about it. In fact, he finds days off to be almost as stressful as his days in the kitchen. “If I have a day off, I don’t know what to do,” Jenkins said. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now. Things are getting better.” Contact Amanda Sebastiano at amandas@yourobserver.com.

oodwill CEO Bob Rosinsky equates the opening of a new Goodwill retail store to a scene from the Clint Eastwood film, “Rawhide.” It’s much like watching a herd of cattle run across an open plane. The cowboys stand out of the way. “That’s what we do,” Rosinsky says with a grin. On March 19, Goodwill Manasota will open its first East County store, something it has hoped to do for about 15 years, Rosinsky said. “We expect a strong opening,” he added.

East County residents will soon have another grocery option. An Aldi grocery store will be located in a 17,018-square-foot space at 4525 53rd Ave. E., following unanimous approval by Manatee County commissioners March 5. The store will be located at the corner of State Road 70 and 45th Street East.

School District feeds students The Manatee County School District doesn’t want its students to start the school day on empty stomachs. So, to promote eating a healthy breakfast, county students will receive free breakfast for the remainder of the school year. Eating the first meal of the day early in the morning boosts academic performance, concentration and improves behavior at school, said Sandra Ford, Manatee School’s Food and Nutrition Services director. The decision to feed the district’s more than 42,000 students coincided with National School Breakfast Week, which ended March 6.

Community plans to fill in the cracks Heritage Harbour South is gearing up for phased road repairs that could cost the CDD up to $1 million. AMANDA SEBASTIANO STAFF WRITER EAST COUNTY — Over the next 15 to 20 years, the Heritage Harbour South Community Development District will pay between $725,000 to $1 million to fix select roads. The good news is, the community’s roads are currently in fairly good shape, according to District Engineer Rick Schappacher, so the CDD has time to start budgeting for the multiyear, phased project. On March 3, Schappacher presented the CDD’s board with a report on 28 of the community’s roads. Schappacher and Supervisor Tad Parker said the CDD is currently budgeting funds for reserves to pay for such expenditures. Residents won’t see additional fees.

“The roads aren’t falling apart; they’re actually in good shape, but in some cases, it’s just a matter of time before we need someone to come fix them.”

from Sarasota Bradenton International

– Rick Schappacher, District Engineer

He considered the asphalt’s life expectancy and length, and number and depth of cracks when determining which roads needed attention first. Roadwork consists of repaving roads that have cracks caused by tires sliding when heavy vehicles, such as garbage trucks, brake. The 1,480 feet of road between Lighthouse Drive and Beacon Harbour Loop is an example of a surface that needs repairs within two to five years because of the marks tires caused on the road. “When a vehicle brakes, it’s trying to slide the asphalt,” Schappacher said. “You see that in areas just before stop signs, before red lights and in cul-de-sacs.” He believes the pavement’s weak soil cement mixture that dates back to the community’s development between 2002 and 2005 is also part of the problem. Schappacher thinks crushed concrete made of old sidewalks and curbs would make a stronger base for the roads. In the worst cases, potholes could eventually form in the asphalt, Schappacher said. “The roads aren’t falling apart; they’re actually in good shape,” Schappacher said. “But in some cases, it’s just a matter of time before we need someone to come fix them.”

Community Haven breaks ground on group home Marlene’s House will give its nine residents a home of their own.

August. A house parent will live at the facility, as well. “It’s huge,” said Brad Jones, CHAC’s vice president of operations. “This was in our one- to five-year plan. It’s kicking us off in the right direction.” The project is the first to come to fruition since Community Haven underwent an extensive rezone project last year so it could develop its 32-acre campus to meet the community’s existing and future needs. The organization has waiting lists for every program, said Marla Doss, CEO and president of CHAC. The Fry Family Foundation, created by Darryl and Marlene Fry, funded $440,000 of the project’s total $750,000 cost. The remainder is being funded by individual donations and by the families whose children will live there. Betty Rogers’ son, Tim, is a future resident. Although Rogers has family in New York City and Atlanta, Community Haven, where the soon-to-be-27-yearold Tim has received services since he was 14, is a better fit for him. “We’re on the threshold of Tim starting his own life,” said Rogers, who cares for Tim at home and was widowed when Tim was 5. “Now, he will have a place to call home.”

PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR EAST COUNTY — Leannette Pigott’s son, Cyle, 19, lives in a group home in Pinellas County even though his family lives in Heritage Harbour. That’s why his mom can’t wait for him to move closer to home to Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities’ future Marlene’s House. “His goal is to be on the lawncare crew here,” Pigott said. “When you have a special needs child, you worry about what’s going to happen if something happens to you. It’s a community here. It’s a community for them to be themselves. And, they’re safe.” After celebrating 60 years as an organization last month, Community Haven has reached another milestone: On March 5, the organization broke ground on Marlene’s House, its newest group home and the first building on its long-range master development plan. The 4,800-square-foot house will house nine clients in individual rooms upon completion in

Nolan Middle School eighth-grade students Alana Kelly, Megan Peters and Cassandra Atzrodt crafted a medical-based project that contributed to the school’s 14 first-place wins.

Seven months of project building paid off for the students at the annual TSA State Conference, held Feb. 25 through Feb. 28, in Orlando. The school won its sixth consecutive middle school championship title at the state conference, in which more than 1,500 middle and high school technology students participated. Peters, the school’s TSA chapter president, and her teammates won 14 first-place, 14 secondplace and five third-place awards. They claimed 299 top-three finalist points in 28 of the 31 events in which the team participated. Carlos E. Haile and Braden River middle schools won second and third places in the Team Event and Construction Challenge, respectively. Braden River and Lakewood Ranch high schools also participated in the high school division of the competition and contributed to the county’s 189 event trophies. Nolan Middle and Braden River High students will advance to the National TSA Conference June 28 through July 2, in Dallas. Nolan students have carved out the first three weeks of summer vacation to use the school’s laboratories for project construction. “What’s vacation?” Nolan Middle TSA member Alana Kelley said. “We know how we want to spend the beginning of summer.”

would include a right-turn lane from Rye Road, heading west onto S.R. 64, FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen said. FDOT officials now will meet with representatives from Manatee County and Lakewood Ranch to determine how to proceed, Stublen said. “That process probably will take a couple of months before anything is finalized,” he added. “The study does not have the cost at this time. We were doing the study to see if it would work, so now we’re going to go forward with the rest of this.” FDOT has no funding or timeline in place for the project, should it move forward. Manatee County transportation officials had requested a traffic signal at the intersection in July 2014, but FDOT officials said one was not warranted; instead, it concluded construction of a right-turn lane from Rye Road onto S.R. 64 westbound would resolve 80% of traffic problems at that location. Manatee transportation officials, however, wanted a different solution, and agreed conceptually with a traffic signal or a roundabout. Stublen said the roundabout design may not be necessary to fix immediate traffic problems on Rye Road, but it will benefit the roadway considering future development in the Rye Road area. Nearby residents have mixed feelings on the idea. “Of all the choices for improvements at the intersection that has to be the most asinine,” resident Tim Goodwin said. “I would hope

clubs, no poetry-focused club existed. In October, Greenfield and her friend and fellow poetry enthusiast Dominick Reynoso decided to change that. They brainstormed ideas for the school’s first Poetry Club, and three weeks ago, the duo hosted the group’s first meeting in the classroom of Teri Grimes, the school’s Advanced Placement (AP) Literature teacher. “We wanted a comfortable space to share our writing,” Greenfield said. “Poetry is such an important art form that we needed to have that type of space.” Lakewood Ranch High’s Poetry Club meets at 2:30 p.m. Mondays, in Room 522. The club’s eight members bring in poems they’ve written or the work of poets they like for discussions and critiques that Greenfield hopes will help the teenagers improve their writing skills. Although the first meeting drew a crowd, the club’s turnout numbers have tapered off over the last two weeks. But the members are OK with the small group the club has right now. “If we have too many members, we won’t be able to spend as much time on each other’s poems,” Reynoso said. “Having fewer people is better for this type of club, but we’d like to have 15 members.” The group’s immediate goal is to attract fellow students who have a strong passion for creative writing, such as 11th grade stu-

— When Dionne Chang brought her youngest daughter, Brielle, to a Tampa hospital, she appreciated the coloring sheets and other activities available to help make patients’ stays at Shriner’s Hospital for Children more enjoyable. But the rooms lacked that same creativity. The uniform hospital rooms could be depressing for children, remembers Chang, a mother of three. To make hospital trips more bearable, Chang created Sewing for Sweet Dreams six months ago. The group invites local middle school girls to learn to sew pillowcases for patients at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. “This idea sparked from those activities I saw at the hospital, but this gives children a way to brighten up their rooms and their spirits,” Chang said. “Having a fun pillowcase might help make it easier for a child to spend the day in a hospital bed.” The seven students now participating attend Haile and Nolan middle schools and Manatee School for the Arts. They meet Monday nights at Chang’s home

in the Greenbrook community. Participants learn to measure and cut fabric, pin it back and use sewing machines to craft pillows. During the hour-long meeting, Chang provides snacks, social time and sewing machines. Chang, a member of Bayside Community Church, also offers prayer time. The girls bring their own fabric and can bring a parent’s sewing machine if they’re able. One yard of fabric will cover one pillow.

Pastor makes progress with Shoreline Church The Rev. Pilgrim Benham believes the new Shoreline Church fills a void in Lakewood Ranch. PAM EUBANKS

IF YOU GO

SENIOR EDITOR EAST COUNTY — A new church has set its roots in Lakewood Ranch, and its pastor, the Rev. Pilgrim Benham, is eager to reach the community. The church officially launched in January and already has 50 adults and 25 children attending Sunday services at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA. In late February, the church launched its community groups — weekly meetings at which members gather in one another’s homes for Bible study, discussion and fellowship. “It’s an opportunity to grow and live together outside church walls,” Jenny Benham said. Pilgrim Benham served as the youth pastor at Calvary Chapel Sarasota until 2009, when he and his family left to start a church, Calvary Chapel South Tampa. “We knew we were supposed to start a church in Tampa and get it up and going,” Pilgrim Benham said. “We didn’t know what would happen after that.” Circumstances kept pointing back to Bradenton. The Benhams began thinking and praying. Was there a need for a Calvary-style church — a contemporary, nononsense, casual, teach-fromthe-Bible verse-by-verse church — in Bradenton? “Going away for five years and

coming back, we realized there was,” Pilgrim Benham said. “Jesus could really meet a need here.” That was in January 2014. By summer, the couple began meeting with people they knew in the area. They trained the associate pastor at the Tampa church and made a decision in May to make the change. Pilgrim Benham uses his experience working with youth to describe his preaching style. “When I was a youth pastor, it dawned on me that teenagers speak a different language; it’s a different way of communicating,” he said. “You have to put (the Bible) in the language of the people. There are some people who will change the message to make it more palatable, but my desire is

to simply present what the Bible says in a way that is understandable.” Services, the Benhams said, are simple: a message preached and music consisting of a few vocalists accompanied by a guitar — no fancy lights or setup. The church’s motto is “Love, demonstrated,” meaning love and serve your neighbors; identify needs and then find a way to help fulfill them. As Pilgrim Benham explains, Shoreline doesn’t want to start a Christian softball league. It wants

members to join a regular league and be real with people outside the church. “Our desire is to be like Jesus said — salt and light,” he said. “Salt is a preservative and a flavoring. We want to be a church where people come and find refreshment.” Both Benhams work full time at Calvary Christian School. Pilgrim teaches eighth grade and science, while Jenny works in the office. Both enjoy their jobs, but hope for the church to become a full-time ministry one day.

Is Pilgrim really Pilgrim Benham’s given name? Indeed, it is. He jokes he was born around the time “Star Wars” came out and his parents had planned to name him Luke, but were afraid the film would be a bust. “They named me Pilgrim instead,” he says.

Q + A WITH AMANDA ZIPPERER community. Everything I do, we focus not only on how it will affect the merchants, but also the community. I think we offer a wide range of events and happenings a lot of places don’t do for their tenants. Q: What are some of your professional goals? A: I want to see Main Street stay 100% leased. With the economy up, the future is bright. With the management side, there’s a lot of things that go into a property that you don’t think about. I’ve definitely broadened my knowledge on roofing and landscaping and stuff like that I never thought I’d need to know about.

t 27 years old, Amanda Zipperer hasn’t shied away from a challenge. Less than two years after joining Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty as an administrative assistant, she worked her way up to assistant property manager and now is property manager/leasing agent for Lakewood Ranch Main Street. Zipperer also won the title of Young Professional of the Year two consecutive years at the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance’s annual Sandies Awards, held each November.

Q: What has it been like becoming the property manager for Lakewood Ranch Main Street? A: It’s been a good experience. Some days are definitely challenging, but Kirk (Boylston, Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty president) and the executive team really help and assist me if I have questions. With property management, there’s something different every day. Q: What do you think differentiates Main Street from other main streets? A: I feel like we have a sense of

Q: You worked for two years as an administrative assistant for the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance before joining Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty. Why do you remain involved in the organization? A: I formed a lot of strong relationships when I was there. It was a great stepping stone for my professional development. I still think they continue to connect businesses with one another and they’re all about the community, too. On the Young Leaders Alliance, I sit on the board. I’m the vice chairwoman. Our board is made up of a lot of young working professionals. It’s good to have those connections and learn together. When Tommy Klauber was (Alliance) chairman, it was his vision to have a young professionals group in Lakewood Ranch. There were a few of us

who took the ball and ran with it. We wanted to do networking but more breakfasts and lunches that focus on professional development. Q: What’s your favorite event that Main Street hosts? A: Music on Main. It’s fun. So many people come together from businesses and church groups. We get people from North Port to Tampa. That event has gained popularity over the years. It’s good for the community because it builds visibility for Lakewood Ranch and for Main Street because it shows what we have to offer. But, I also feel Lakewood Ranch is a safe place. Q: What did you think of being named Young Professional of the Year for the second year in a row? A: The second time, I was definitely not expecting it. It was an honor. I feel I really do embody a young professional. I pound the pavement. I work hard. I play hard. — PAM EUBANKS

East County families joined hundreds of others to experience “Purim Pandemonium” March 1, at Temple Emanu-El. The event was a celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim, which commemorates the victory of the biblical Queen Esther over Haman, who sought to destroy the Jews. The event featured a Purim service, a costume parade, a play performed by the temple’s seventh-graders and a carnival. Mill Creek resident Marni Mount served as the event’s chairwoman. She organized the carnival and oversaw the baking of hundreds of hamentashen, the three-cornered cookie traditionally eaten on the holiday. East County resident Sabrina Silverberg, who serves as Temple Emanu-El’s director of religious education, wrote and directed the Purim play and assisted with other festivities. East County seventh-graders included Natalie Mount, Cooper Zion and Rebekah Spiegelman.

In the junior division, Caden and Kristen Parker took top honors. The finale was a minute-long cupcake-eating contest. In the senior division, Amanda Hirst and her son, Clay, took first place. Senior division contestants had to eat whipped cream pies with chocolate sauce in a minute. Judges ranked the plates from most gone to least gone. “We covered the stage in plastic and even gave every contestant a garbage bag poncho,” PTO President Chrissy Fairey says.

hosted by parents. Players Chase Bafia, 17, and Sean Hanlon, 18, admit the team is a bit superstitious, but it’s working. The Admirals are 23-0 this season. The team of 20 players made up of students from Lakewood Ranch, Manatee and Palmetto high schools, as well as Inspiration Academy, is undefeated in the regular season, 21-0, and is

headed to St. Louis March 19 to play for a national title. “We have our superstitions,” Hanlon said. “But we keep it light. We all get along, and we’re all in it to win it.” And win they have. The Admirals, which play in the Tampa Bay Lightning Conference of the Florida High School Hockey Association with 17 other teams, went on to win the Lightning Cup Feb. 15, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, defeating the Mitchell Mustangs 10-3. The win secured the Admirals a berth in the Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida State Tier 2 Championship, where the Admirals defeated the East Miami Mutts Feb. 21 and Feb. 22 in a best-of-three series by taking the first two games by scores of 10-1 and 8-1, respectively. The state championship win gave the team a berth in the Tier 2 USA Hockey National Tournament in St. Louis, where the Admirals will play in an eastern conference tournament of 16 games with a chance to take home a national championship. The Admirals, which lost in the Lightning Cup championship game last year, now have their sights set on a national title. And the team believes it can bring home the trophy. “We got the Lightning Cup,” said Hanlon, a senior at Lakewood

Ranch High School. “But now we want more. We feel like we can play with anyone and we’re confident we can come home with a title.” PLAYING WITH CONFIDENCE

Half of the team also plays for a traveling hockey team called the Gulf Coast Flames, which gives the team a competitive edge when it comes to experience. “Our third line can play with most first and second lines,” Bafia said. “We have that much experience.” The team, which calls the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex home, is dominant on both offense and defense. This season, the Admirals scored 178 goals, and division opponents were only able to score 21 goals against them in the regular season. The team also only committed 171 penalty minutes. The league leader in penalty minutes this year had 411 minutes combined. Admirals coach Eric Wessel, who helped put this team together two years ago, believes his team has a shot at a national championship. “If these Florida kids played hockey even up North, I think they would still be successful,” Wessel said. “They’re a selfless bunch that’s hungry for more. I’m excited about their chances.”

SUPPORTING THE ADMIRALS It costs $2,000 per player to attend the Tier 2 USA Hockey National Tournament in St. Louis, which begins March 19. Admirals coach Eric Wessel and his team will have a booth set up near the roller hockey rink from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, at Greenbrook Adventure Park, at the fourth annual Irish Celtic Festival and Lucky Dog Parade to collect donations for his team’s trip. The Tampa Bay Lightning donated merchandise and memorabilia to the Admirals that the team will sell for money to help pay for the trip. “Anything helps,” Wessel said. “The parents pay for what we can’t raise, so we’re trying to help out these families as much as we can.”

Women celebrate diversity with international flare

T

he Gulf Coast Chapter of U.N. Women and the U.N. Association Sarasota-Manatee chapter welcomed more than 100 women Saturday for the 2015 International Women’s Day luncheon, held at the Polo Grill and Bar’s Fête Ballroom. Participants wore international dress from the country of their choice, while visiting with new and old friends and sitting down to lunch. Ambassador Leslie Rowe, of the U.S. Office of Global Health Diplomacy, U.S. State Department, served as the luncheon’s keynote speaker. The theme of this year’s event was “Make it happen: gender equality.” – PAM EUBANKS

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD TIMELINE

Cascades community celebrates 10 years The East County community offers residents classes such as pottery and line dancing, as well as other amenities. SENIOR EDITOR CASCADES — Ten years after mov-

ing into their Cascades home, Nick and Lois Mancuso can’t imagine living anywhere else. The couple joined neighbors Feb. 22 in celebrating Cascades’ 10th anniversary with a special party at the clubhouse. At the event, the Mancusos were crowned as the community’s longest tenured residents.

This sign sits in a flowerbed in front of the clubhouse.

Mon - Sat 10 - 5

“There were four homes when we moved here under construction at the same time,” Lois Mancuso says. The Mancusos moved in 1994 to the Sarasota area from New Jersey. They first lived in Sarasota’s Turtle Rock community and moved to Cascades about 10 years later. “We were in Orlando with some friends of ours and we took a trip to see this community (developer) Levitt (& Sons) had built,” Lois Mancuso says, adding they also bought their home in New Jersey from Levitt. “When we went, I fell in love with it. We were looking at retiring in about five years.” A salesman told them not to make any moves because Levitt was buying land in Manatee County for the future Cascades development. The couple waited. And on the day the sales trailer opened for Cascades, Nick Mancuso was the first future buyer through its

doors. The Mancusos were the second family to close on their home. “When you work your whole life and are busy, busy, busy, to come to an abrupt stop was kind of scary,” Lois Mancuso says. That’s why Cascades seemed so perfect. Because it’s an agerestricted community, residents are in the same stage of life — retiring, losing older family members or spouses, for example.

f folk music conjures images of another era — perhaps of hippies and sit-ins — the Sarasota Folk Club wants you to know that the music form has changed. Sort of. Although it still maintains a hearty dose of its 1960s revivalist roots, the music you’ll hear at club’s upcoming folk festival has evolved to mirror what its purpose has been all along — to reflect the conversations of the present. MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE: Bridging the Gap FIVE QUESTIONS WITH EILEEN KOZLOFF

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

“Essentially folk music is the music that is of the people,” says Eileen Kozloff, director of the Sarasota Folk Festival. “To me folk music is what people are doing, listening to and creating at this point in time.” The Sarasota Folk Festival, which will be held March 21 and 22, at Oscar Scherer State Park, carries out that idea by bringing in dozens of local and national folk musicians to perform. Beginning in 2000 with a collaboration between the Sarasota Folk Club and the Crowley Museum and Nature Center, the festival moved to its current expansive camping location from Crowley in 2009. “This is one big reunion for most of the attending musicians,” says Kozloff. “It’s just a harmonious cacophony of sound.” And to understand how the folk of today is different from its ’60s-inspired parent, one needs only to look at the musical lineup for this year’s festival. The headlining bands include Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield, the former being a contestant on NBC’s “The Voice”; Lon and Lis Williamson, a Florida couple playing together for more than 30 years; The New 76ers, a young acoustic trio from Tallahassee; and Radoslav Lorković, a multiinstrumentalist from Croatia who has performed all over the world, from the Canary Islands to Carnegie Hall. The festival also highlights regional artists such as Bing Futch, a master of the mountain dulcimer, and The Hum-

Q: Who is your folk hero? A: I would have to say that Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were probably huge influences on me in terms of wanting to get music out as a force of expressing political commentary and to address the rights of man. They awakened a social consciousness in myself and others at my age. Q: What other type of music do you listen to — anything surprising? A: I love really multi-genre music. As a piano player, Bach is one of my all-time favorites. And in the jazz world I just admire so many. I really enjoy bluegrass and good blues like B.B. King. I can even appreciate rap if it’s well-written. Something that would have good timing and be well-rhymed and possibly executed with a singer with a good interplay. Q: If you could perform a duet with anyone, who would it be? A: Well, of course Joan, but I love Emmylou Harris and I’d probably want to sing a duet with Mark Knopf. A trio with Emmylou and Mark Knopfler — I have chills just being asked that question.

Eileen Kozloff with her autoharp

Q: Are there any instruments you feel are misunderstood? A: I think the autoharp is misunderstood because people think of it as not a fully developed instrument and that the people playing it aren’t serious musicians. It’s still changing. The autoharp is now made by wonderful luthiers, and they’re in the hands of some great players. Mike Seeger was part of my world intimately, and he played the autoharp. Brian Bowers has used the autoharp. The popularity of that instrument has just to come into its own. Q: What are three words you would use to describe folk music? A: Inclusive, expressive and accessible.

“If we don’t get the youth, if we don’t accept the transition between old-time folk and this bridge to the next generation, we’ll die out.” – Eileen Kozloff, director of the Sarasota Folk Festival

mingbirds, an alternative country Tampa duo. “I think a lot of the music we play is semi-pop music,” says Jim Dunn, who has been the festival’s soundboard operator and acoustics guru for the last 10 years. “You’d be surprised how few people try to cover or copy any Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary or Kingston Trio. We are trying to differentiate ourselves from that.” The diverse mix of artists at the festival reflects the direction of folk music as it moves away from its traditional roots and transitions into a new Americana. “If we don’t get the youth, if we don’t accept the transition between old-time folk and this bridge to the next generation, we’ll die out,” says Kozloff. JAMMIN’ OUT

The music being played at the Sarasota Folk Festival maintains folk’s inherent aspect: the voice of the people. Whether it’s a protest song from the turbulent 1960s or a coffee shop ode to an unrequited love, folk music has always been a reflection of the moment. As a testament to that, the festival works to cultivate a musical conversation. Unlike other music festivals featuring one major stage/performance space, the Sarasota Folk Festival is akin to a two-day musical colony all about sharing. Three stage spaces, a jam space, workshop tent, a children’s space and a dozen food and craft vendors will occupy the park adjacent to its nature center, parking and camp sites. It’s a collaborative

village that encourages mingling and — most importantly — jamming together. There isn’t a divide between the 36 musicians and acts scheduled to perform and the estimated 2,000 attendees. “There’s a jam tent, and you’ll see a lot of performers and people not performing bring their guitars and play together,” says Carolyn Dunn, vendor coordinator for the festival. “There will be a workshop space with people talking about their craft, giving tips and advice.” Dunn and her husband moved in 2005 to Sarasota from Burlington, Vt., and have been active members of the folk club as well as assisted in the technical needs of the festival. Calling herself “the bass-playing grandma,” Carolyn, with her

husband on guitar, has been playing music for years. Similarly, Kozloff is one of the many folk music and acoustic instrumentalists who calls Sarasota and its folk club home. A transplant from Harrisburg, Pa., the multi-instrumentalist who specializes in autoharp and mandolin moved in 2011 to Sarasota and joined the club. Managing the festival since then, Kozloff views the annual acoustic extravaganza as a unique music festival in the area. And, the festival is a natural extension of Kozloff’s lifelong love affair with music. “I was telling a friend of mine this morning that one of my report cards in kindergarten said I enjoyed making up songs and teaching them,” she said. “It was

sort of a natural thing from the earliest record.” Kozloff grew up in a musical household. Her family listened to music from an extensive 78 rpm jazz and classical music record collection. “We use to sing in the car, even musical theater,” says Kozloff. “Me coming to folk music allowed me to play with a bunch of different genres.” She learned to play piano first. The piano evolved into a lap dulcimer, then the autoharp, mandolin and now the guitar. “One string instrument influenced the next,” says Kozloff. “Because folk music is of the people, I think it’s participatory. It’s not like you’re in a concert hall. You’re integrated into the music and the people at the same time.”

NICK’S PICK ‘DON CARLOS’ Even though it’s the penultimate year of Sarasota Opera’s nearly three decades-long Verdi Cycle (performing every major and minor work by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi), this year’s addition to the cycle feels like a grand and epic finale. “Don Carlos” is the Italian master’s five-act grand opera and depicts the story of love and betrayal in the Spanish royal family between King Phillippe II and his son, Don Carlos, as they vie for the affection of the French princess, Élisabeth de Valois. This rarely performed “Paris version” of the show, which includes the original first act in the wintry forests of Fontainebleau, France, is more than four-and-a-halfhour opera experience if one

counts the two 20-minute intermissions. Running this week at 6:30 p.m. March 12 and 18 and 1:30 p.m. March 15, the opera, like any great work of art, compresses that intimidating runtime. And with sophisticated sets and costumes, stellar performances by leads Jonathan Burton, Michelle Johnson, Kevin Short, Marco Nisticò, Young Bok Kim and Mary Phillips, as well as pristine musical performance by the orchestra led by Maestro Victor DeRenzi, four-and-a-half hours have never passed by so quickly or so enjoyably. Fresh Faces Local artist Sam Whiting, who made a foothold in the art community with colorful fish portraits, continues to explore various other artistic avenues.

Sam Whiting can paint you anything. The artist and former designer can produce portraits, abstracts and landscapes within a few days’ time. Just don’t ask him to paint fish. The Louisville, Ky.-born and Richmond, Va.-raised 62-yearold artist left a career as a graphic designer and production artist 20 years ago and started painting large and vibrant portraits of colorful tropical fish. The soothing aquatic portraits struck a chord with Sarasota residents and organizations. But after selling more than an estimated 250 portraits of fish, Whiting’s need to express another aspect of his artistic side took over. “I just got tired of them,” says Whiting, “and I’ve always tried to stimulate myself by doing different things.” Whiting’s unyielding drive for new things is a common theme of his life. And his need to create art has always been at the center of this drive. “I pretty much painted all my life,” says Whiting. “At the beginning, I used it as gifts for friends and family.” After graduating from high school, he spent from 1973 to 1977 in the U.S. Coast Guard. Whiting

attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and earned an Associate of Science degree in advertising. Whiting then spent 15 years as a graphic designer and art director for various ad agencies in Florida and Texas. But he eventually became burnt out with advertising and searched for a new artistic outlet. Living in a cozy artist’s loft on Citrus Avenue, Whiting hasn’t let age or time slow down his creative ambition. His studio space is awash in color. Whiting’s easel is surrounded by portraitures, landscapes and abstracts, representative of his diverse interests and experiments in style. “A painting can take me five minutes or two weeks,” says Whiting. “I like to work pretty fast.” Portraits of friends and celebrities, such as Amy Lee, lead singer of Evanescence, and Scarlett Johansson, are frequent subjects. But instead of traditional portraiture, Whiting injects abstract patterns, reminiscent of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, into his works. “I like to branch out and challenge myself,” says Whiting. Whiting is always tweaking his artistic style, including reassessing finished works. He is currently adding elements of abstract and

geometric patterns to some of his more traditional portraits. “I was doing everything in outline with notes of realism,” says Whiting. “But now I see my paintings as a conversation that doesn’t really end. They also take me back, and I remember what I was doing at the time.”

in. Their sweet (or angry) voices got airplay in a time when that mattered. This revue does justice to these voices of the 1960s and ’70s. The songs include Paul Simon’s “The Fighter” and “Cecelia,” Graham Nash’s “Teach Your Children Well,” Ray Orbison’s “Blue Bayou” and more tunes than I can list. They’re all good — though some are trimmed to the bone. My advice? Reduce the song list and play each song in full. If “American Pie” is the title, I want the whole pie. Quality, not quantity, is what counts, right? At least to my ears. I don’t listen to Beethoven or Stravinsky out of nostalgia. I listen because their music is good. The same applies to songs by Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Graham Nash, Simon and the rest. Who cares what year they wrote their tunes? It’s good stuff. Period. But maybe that’s just me. I can’t help but notice the rest of the baby boomer audience happily feasting on slice after slice of nostalgic pie. (Their joy of recognition while singing along on the choruses would be the tip-off.) It’s the soundtrack of their misspent youth, thus they dig it. Fine by me. There’s no wrong reason to listen to the good stuff, especially when such a good band is playing it.

child of Rebecca and Richard Hopkins. Director Russell Treyz and Musical Director Ben Krauss put the pedal to the metal and bring it to life. As the title implies, it’s a slice of a ’60s song served hot. The revue begins with a tight rendition of the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA.” (Lyrics by Brian Wilson. Tune ripped off from Chuck Berry.) The talk before the tune gives a wise nod to the song’s doo-wop roots. That a cappella genre thrived on tight vocal harmonies, clever lyrics and a simple rhythm line wrapped in polyphonic complexity. Add instruments? Surf music is basically what you get. Nice insight. But there’s a bigger picture. Voice, plus polyphony, plus storytelling. It’s a branch on the tree of rock (as seen in Jack Black’s “School of Rock”). Doowop, surf music and folk rock are merely twigs on that branch. And what tender twigs they are … touchy-feely, tender sensitive twigs. And that’s cool. Rock isn’t all in-your-face aggression. As much as I love the Ramones and MC5, they’re not the whole show. Emotional connection shares billing with alienation; voices singing sweetly together can also rock. It’s what doo-wop, surf music, folk rock and the ballads of bleedingheart singer-songwriters have in common. The human voice as a musical instrument, basically. And vocal harmony holds this show together. It’s the bed that such odd musical bedfellows as the Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Lovin’ Spoonful, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and/or Garfunkel, Carole King, the Doobie Brothers and Neil Diamond lie

‘Don Carlos’ version tells the whole story JUNE LEBELL MUSIC CRITIC

What’s the recipe for grand opera? Take a soupcon of historic fact and mix well with large dollops of passion and heaping portions of great music. Then add fine singers, instrumentalists, appropriate costumes, scenery, a stage director with a vision and a conductor with the grit of a field marshal and, voila: “Don Carlos,” in just four hours and 30 minutes, two intermissions and five acts of glory. Sarasota Opera, under the direction of Victor DeRenzi, has been making its way through the entire Verdi catalogue, including the composer’s three versions of “Don Carlos.” On Saturday, Sarasota Opera opened its production of the five-act French version, which gives us the opening act, omitted in the other editions, that gives the rest of the opera a raison d’etre. Finally, we’re able to see for ourselves the loveat-first-sight connection made between Don Carlos, infante of Spain, and Elisabeth de Valois, two young people (history tells us he was 15 and she just 13), and why they’re so ecstatically happy that their planned marriage is one they would have chosen. We also see that Carlos’ father, Philippe II, king of Spain, who arranged the marriage, has — for political reasons — changed his mind and

decided it’s in everyone’s best interests if he marries Elisabeth, himself. That’s the back story we only hear about but never witness in the other versions. And, believe me, if you’re already feeling confused, that opening act helps mightily in the next several hours as we wade through political struggles, religious wars, the pageant of an auto-da-fé with its street fair atmosphere surrounding prisoners about to be executed, inexplicable ghostly apparitions, friendships that hold bonds so deep they cut through life, deceptions, jealousies and a horrific display of the terrors of the Inquisition. But it’s the music that makes this grand opera truly grand. Try as she may, Stage Director Stephanie Sundine couldn’t do much beyond what Verdi gave us, so most of the staging is static because the composer filled this work with a multitude of expository arias, duets and other exquisite small ensembles that allow us to see into the thoughts of the characters without much action. To have much movement on stage would be counter to the essence of Verdi’s concept of this opera. So, it’s best to sit back, appreciate the beautiful scenery by David Gordon, 16th-century costumes by Howard Tsvi Kaplan, lighting effects that bring it all together by Ken Yunker, and let the sound of music pour into your soul.

And pour it does. Michelle Johnson, as Elisabeth, brings a warm, rich, beautiful Verdian soprano that always seems to have more to give. On opening night she was careful not to over-sing and, as a result, her tone was always sumptuous and large with floating high notes reminiscent of a young Leontyne Price. Mary Phillips, the Princess Eboli who loves Carlos but is not only rejected by him but also a very dangerous woman scorned, sang and acted her role with great passion and understanding. Her voice has grown extraordinarily over the years since we first heard her in recital in New York City and, while she hasn’t lost her wonderful musicality, she has taken on a wider vibrato, darker sound and tendency (on this occasion, anyway), to over-sing. It’s not necessary. The voice is there, and she doesn’t need to push it. Jonathan Burton, the Don Carlos, displayed a brilliant, clarion tenor that reverberated through the house and gave a passion to his role that grew vocally and emotionally as the opera went on. In fact, Burton and Johnson were able to imbue their characters with a humanity that gave us insights into their growth from carefree lovers to honorable, caring friends — a bow to Sundine, who always looks into the characters in her stagings. Kevin Short was an incisive, frighteningly cold Philippe,

quite capable of killing his own son if he thought God would approve. His raw, rugged bass-baritone is a perfect match for his character, as is Marco Nistico’s brash baritone and no-holds-barred sound as Rodrigue, the friend-throughthick-and-thin who eventually gives his life for his friend. Young Bok Kim made a terrifying Grand Inquisitor, showing an upper range to his stolid bass that we hadn’t heard before. And Tyler Putnam, a studio artist, showed great vocal prowess as a Monk.

Special mention must be made of the magnificent chorus members. Their sound overcame the oratorio-like stance they maintained on stage, pouring out Verdi’s music like a group double their size. And DeRenzi brought out the best in his orchestra. Best of all, no matter how much solid support DeRenzi gave the singers, he never allowed the powerful orchestra to cover them. “Don Carlos” is a long song but, historically and musically, it’s well worth the sit.
