Let the learning begin PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR

W

atching my son complete kindergarten in May, I was a bit awestruck. In less than a year’s time, he has learned to read and write (some), ride the bus, follow his teachers’ instructions, problem-solve and manage his times. Those are all building blocks for the next 12 years of his education.

This year, I know he — like all the other Manatee County students — is going to learn much more than I realize.

After covering our East County schools for more than a decade, I know firsthand the remarkable work our educators and students do. Each year, kindergartners begin learning to read and write

while our middle and high school students take honors and college-level classes and compete in national and international competitions.

This summer, for example, three Braden River Middle School eighth graders — Jack Mowrey, Logan O’Donnell and Derrick Jones — competed in history, geography and science at the International Academic Competitions, a consortium of competitions for primary and secondary students operating in more than 25 countries around the world.

From June 28 to July 2, Manatee County students competed nationally at the Technology Student Association National Conference in National Harbor, Md., and Braden River High students again topped the competition and earned first

place finishes in 3D animation and scientific visualization.

These are the stories we love to tell.

As we head into the 2019-20 school year, we also hope to be a resource to our readers.

This year, our annual Back to School issue takes a slightly different format we hope will be even more useful.

You’ll find some of the usual — updates on the school district from Superintendent Cynthia Saunders and changes happening at our East County schools.

However, you will also find a listing of schools designed to provide you a more comprehensive resource to what educational options are available to your child.

Of course, you will find the list of our top-rated Lakewood

Ranch-area public schools, but you’ll also see listings of the area’s charter, private and alternative education options.

Each child has unique learning needs, and we hope this new format will provide you the news you need, as well as a one-stop guide for educational opportunities in our area.

A message from the superintendent or Sarasota counties, while Daughtrey Elementary will launch a dual-language program that will allow students to conduct their studies half in English and half in Spanish.

Manatee Elementary will become a Performing Arts and Community Partnership School with specialized instruction in the visual and performing arts, as well as a partnership with the district, a university, a health care provider and a nonprofit organization to offer resources benefiting the community around the school.

xciting openings, expanding educational opportunities and a strategic planning process that will include employee, parent and community input are all reasons to be enthusiastic and involved in the 2019-20 school year.

On Aug. 12, we will officially open the doors of three new schools – Barbara A. Harvey Elementary and

Parrish Community High schools in Parrish and Dr. Mona Jain Middle School in Lakewood Ranch. All three schools were built with assistance from the half-cent sales tax for school district capital needs, which was generously renewed by voters in November 2016. These schools will help us reduce overcrowding in existing schools and will help accommodate the growth that continues in Manatee County.

hree weeks before school let out for summer, Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary School kindergartner Chloe Bellaire carried a handmade thank-you card to the front office for Michael Parker, McNeal’s school’s safety officer, known as a Guardian.

“He stopped a bad guy at [my sister] Samantha’s school,” Bellaire said. “He makes me feel safe.”

The week prior, Parker ran in front of and stopped a vehicle exiting the parking lot of R. Dan Nolan Middle School and heading toward McNeal’s parking lot, where about 800

students were dismissed.

Authorities arrived and arrested the driver for driving under the influence of alcohol.

School District of Manatee County Attorney Mitchell Teitelbaum, who oversees the district Guardian program, said the incident showcases the role guardians have.

“The goal is to save children’s lives,” Teitelbaum said. “That Guardian acted superbly that day. They don’t direct traffic, but they’re to be vigilant.”

Teitelbaum said the Guardian program, which provides a safety officer at district elementary schools, is working well and that the school district continues to make security enhancements at all its

Teitelbaum said the district also is hiring a chief of security who will take responsibility for safety-related issues, such as meeting state-mandated security requirements, overseeing the guardian program or making sure schools are protected against intruders.

East County resident James Golden might have assumed his role as East County’s representative on the Manatee County School Board in November 2018, but he said there’s already been plenty of change.

“The board has worked through the hiring of a superintendent, overcome the challenges of the [payroll system rollout], developed a working cadence on the board and restored public confidence in our fiscal stewardship,” Golden said.

He said the district is developing plans for meeting the maintenance and restorative needs of Manatee County’s schools to ensure classroom space is used wisely and that the district finds the most efficient and cost-effective way to transport students.

“We’ve established priorities for the district,” Golden said. “We can no longer do this in a piecemeal and reactive way.”

Golden noted the district continues to focus on improving students’ reading skills, and he said he believes more should be done on the prekindergarten level, so children entering school are better pre-

pared to learn.

“We’re trying to wrestle with how do we provide assistance in pre-K education,” he said.

Golden launched his Constituent Contact Meetings in December 2018, after taking office, as a way for the public to talk with him one-on-one about district-related issues.

Golden said he remains committed to meeting residents, but in the 2019-20 school year, the time and days for the meetings, held September through May, will fluctuate each month rather than being held each Thursday before Tuesday night board meetings. The constituent meetings still will be held before regular board meetings.

Joshua Bennett, formerly principal at Bashaw, will lead Braden River Elementary.

Before taking over at Bashaw nine years ago, Bennett

served as an assistant principal at Bayshore Elementary and Kinnan Elementary.

Mario Mendoza, formerly principal at Wakeland Elementary School, has taken the helm at Bashaw Elementary.

New to Willis Elementary is Kathy Price, who served as principal at Myakka City Elementary for the past five years. Price was an assistant principal at McNeal Elementary before taking over at Myakka.

“I know their experience and leadership qualities will be a strong asset to the schools they will now be leading,” Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said in a statement.

The School District of Manatee County has hired an interim deputy superintendent of instructional services.

Former St. Lucie County Public Schools Superintendent Genelle Zoratti Yost began in her new role July 1.

Yost worked as superintendent in St. Lucie County from 2013 to 2015 and previously served as a deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent there from 2003 to 2012.

Manatee County Schools Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said Yost is coming out of retirement to assist the district as it opens three new schools, and Saunders will reevaluate the position and develop a long-term plan for it in December, after Yost completes her contract.

harmed when they hear any other family member or friend of their parents say anything bad about their other parent. And children do not miss a thing!

You will always be a family!: It may sound weird, but you will always be mother, father and children. What if as part of the breaking up of your family, you started a new tradition? Maybe you create your family day, where your family comes together and celebrate as a family. It doesn’t have to be a formal holiday, but it can be special for your family. One thing most kids likely want is time to remember the fond parts of their life as a child.

Set a Date: Create time every week to check with the other parent to discuss any issues that need to be addressed regarding your children. They will be delighted to know that their parents are taking time to talk about them. Our children really need to know that they are so important that we are able to put our own issues aside in order to focus on them. As children get older and have more school work and activities, it is imperative for us to stay connected to what is going
