Letter from the editor

the woman BEHIND THE CAMERA

L

ast year, I ended this letter by saying I hoped to build more and better relationships with the community. It’s safe to say I did that this season.

After a summer away from black tie events, we hit the ground running with Key to the Cure. Only hours before the event, I hurriedly grabbed a hot pink Lilly Pulitzer dress from Fifi’s Resale Boutique, which I think set the tone for the rest of the season.

It was truly a blur that went by way too quickly. Between these pages you’ll find memories from the past season, from Girls Inc. Totally Tailgate to The Firefly Gala, and every day of fun and laughter (and of course some tears) in between.

Shortly after Key to the Cure there was the SPARCC Amazing Raise and CANDance. I’ll never forget Dan Starostecki throwing $100 bills in the air, and I don’t know about you, but I still want to know where those missing panties went. Then Foodlosophy snuck up on us earlier this year, and that beautiful unicorn donut will forever remain one of the sweetest photos I’ve ever taken (page 38).

Last year I wrote about how I couldn’t wait until Wine, Women & Shoes. If only I could have told myself what I was in for that day.

Between the fabulous shoes and outfits, sitting behind Christie Brinkley at lunch and the most amazing fashion show to date, I still can’t put that whole day into words. And speaking of fashion shows, Selah Freedom’s New Beginning Fashion Event was soon after, and marked the end of my first year as Black Tie reporter.

We did a lot after that, Sarasota. We went to Paris for Asolo Repertory Theatre’s “Vive les Folies Bergère” gala, around the world with Banyan Ball and to a magical world with Ringling College of Art and Design’s Avant-Garde. We saw both Seal and Kesha (page 16) perform live, and watched amazing performances from Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Florida Studio Theatre. And in the midst of it all, here at the Observer we even managed to build a new app for all things black tie and launched it by bringing back Black Tie Bash (left).

As you look through this year’s standouts, take your time. Let yourself remember the moments from each event and the organizations that put in so much work to make it happen. We didn’t just dress up, eat great food, enjoy desserts and dance until our feet hurt because it’s fun — we did it because of the mission of every nonprofit. Philanthropy is the backbone of this town and the heart of the Observer’s Black Tie section, and we’re happy to cover the people who take the time to give back.

Thank you, once again, for teaching me, Sarasota. This season ­— my last with the Observer — I found not only my style (thanks fashionistas and Rent the Runway), but also that the world is bigger than myself. And it’s because of all of you than I am proud to say I was the Black Tie Editor.

Donna Koffman This Sarasota it-girl knows how to take fashion risks, and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. This year she’s been a little more edgy than before, rocking the glitter, body studs and her favorite spiked Louboutins. A few of her standout moments this year were: her white circus costume for her silks performance as co-chairwoman of the Circus Gala, her glittery gown at Red Ribbon Gala and bustier and tutu for Wine, Women & Shoes. And really, who other than Donna can look totally natural with a self-proclaimed glitter unicorn bun at The Firefly Gala (pictured right).

Brian Craft The year started out well for our standout man, who was married to his husband, Matt Craft, Jan. 11. Since then, he’s been dazzling the scene with both casual and tuxedo attire we can all be envious of – especially when he and his husband show up looking great together. When it comes to art and style, these two are the pros. They both always look their best and have great choices when it comes to fashion. More than that, they have impeccable taste in art, and have recently donated part of their collection to The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. In addition, they are big supporters of The Salvation Army Sarasota County.

Wherever there’s Bunny, Mort’s not far behind. We applaud him for keeping up with the “energizer Bunny,” as she’s been affectionately called. Together, the two of them can be seen supporting multiple organizations in town, including Bunny’s own nonprofit, Compeer Inc.

There are many couples in this town so close at the hip, it’s hard to think about one without the other. These power duos chair events and fundraise together, support each other and always look good together. It’s hard to not compare some of the couples in this town to the kind of love straight out of a novel.

This couple is one to envy not only for their style, but their ability to juggle their work and social lives.

Roger keeps busy with his career in special event coordinating for CAN Community Health, and Tony is often away on weekends for Jump Dance Company competitions. But somehow between the two, they manage to support each other and causes they care about.

events Between the execution of the theme, the ambiance of the venue and the flow of the timeline, some events just get it all right. Plus, they use every sense in just the right ways – from the look of the decor, the taste of the food, the smells in the room, the textures at the table and the music heard in the background. Some events just wrap up everything in a bow and give it to you as a gift. Here’s (a few) of our favorites from 2018-2019.

RED RIBBON GALA

The inaugural Red Ribbon Gala benefiting CAN Community Health truly set a new tone for events moving forward. Under the leadership of Roger Capote, the event flowed differently than any before it. After a half hour VIP hour with “Pose” stars Billy Porter and MJ Rodriguez, the general cocktail hour was shortened to a half hour as well. There was time for guests to enjoy both courses before the speeches with time to mingle and chat in between. That meant during the speeches, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

FIREFLY GALA

Not many people can say they have been to a private Kesha concert at one of The Ritz-Carlton hotels with only about 300 other guests – but Firefly Gala attendees can. Kesha aside, the Firefly Gala is unlike any other, with its sparkly attire, party atmosphere and gorgeous setting on the patio of The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. And when guests took their seats for dinner, the sun set at the perfect time as the mission of beneficiary Forty Carrots Family Center was addressed with a clever video featuring Executive Director Michelle Kapreilian and Chairwoman Ariane Dart.

RAISE THE ROOF PARTY

There’s no better way to kick off a new season than a citywide scavenger hunt for a good cause, especially when it ends with an even better after-party. Safe Place & Rape Crisis Center’s Amazing Raise and Raise the Roof Party brings the fun unlike any other event. Who doesn’t love a black tie event without the actual black tie attire? This year, SPARCC took it to a whole other level with the ball pit photo booth. It’s an event that truly brings out the childlike spirit in everyone.

PAWS ON THE CATWALK

One of the most upbeat luncheons this year, the annual Paws on the Catwalk delivered in barking good style. The cocktail hour was filled with drinks, shopping and adorable animals to cuddle (and adopt). After guests took their seats, a lively wine draw had them jumping up and down, getting on stage and waving their numbers hoping to be picked. Emotions of a different kind took over the room later as a video shared memories of successful adoptions at beneficiary Humane Society of Sarasota County.

A fashion show ended the program, rounding out a purr-fect luncheon for the local shelter.

Between the box lettering, red color and the silky texture of the paper, this invite really went all-out. The design is simple and creatively tied to the theme. It emulated the feel of CAN Community Health’s evening — bold and ready to put it all out there.

SEAS’ING THE TROPICS

The good thing about living in Florida is we can enjoy the tropics year-round. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida did just that Feb. 21 when it served up its signature cocktail at Cooking for Wishes: “A Toast to the Seas.” This unnamed tropical drink featured a blend of the classics: rum, orange juice, pineapple and of course, an umbrella on top.

SMOKE ON THE WATER

There was all smoke and no fire when it came to the signature cocktail Oct. 27 for Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s annual gala.

Servers walked around The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota serving up the smoking Dive Mountain cocktail for Oceanic Evening.

FLA-MINGLIN’ CONFECTION

Junior League of Sarasota served a bubbly confection at Lilly Luncheon that was the talk of the town. Rosé with a dab of cotton candy made the drink fizz up at first, then it melted into the drink to give it a sweeter-thannormal taste. Standout Animals There’s something about an animal guest that puts a smile on everyone’s faces.

We saw many cute critters this season, from dogs to cats and even a few more exotic. A few of the lucky ones ­— both humans and animals — found their match made in heaven and were adopted at the event in which they starred.

CUTER THAN CLOONEY

A FLOCK TO REMEMBER

Paws on the Catwalk brought many adorable and adoptable animals to the cocktail hour, but (in my humble opinion) no one — not even George Clooney — was cuter than the collie/ sheltie mixed breed named after the actor. This little guy knew just the right way to pose for the camera to show off his best side.

We are used to seeing dogs and kittens at black tie galas, but birds?

This year’s JFCS Gala was themed, “It’s a Jungle Out There” so naturally, organizers brought the theme to life by bringing jungle birds to join in the fun at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota.

A LITTLE FISHY

This wrinkly English Bulldog was a lady killer in his lobster suit at the Top Dog Brunch. Donte’s Den hosted the fashion show with several furry friends in costume Oct. 7.

With his good looks and charm, Tuna won the first round of his category, but lost the grand prize to a schnauzer puppy.

YOU’VE GOTTA BE KITTEN ME

Little George pawed at our heartstrings at Cat Depot’s annual gala, Meow Masquerade. His sweet demeanor and cuddly personality made him purrfect for the spotlight as cat-lovers united not only to support the shelter, but to pet all the kittens in attendance.

The show featured clothing from Talbots and Martin Freeman, all modeled by local members of the Parkinson’s community and their caregivers.

foot-forward FASHIONS There’s nothing like a good fashion show to get an audience upbeat and ready to party. We saw amazing shows and fashions this year, from the professional runway show at Wine, Women & Shoes to the fun, beachy attire shown by Influence Style at Paws on the Catwalk. After all, beautiful clothes and good causes are always in style.

MAKING IT RAIN

The fashions at the Wine, Women & Shoes Signature Luncheon Nov. 9 at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota stole the show. It was put together by The Met, and included four segments with different looks.

Alexandra Misantone was confident with her design at the iConcept Jr. Fashion show Sept. 23 at Art Center Sarasota. She came onto the runway with a paper wrap, which she threw off to reveal her piece, “Rags to Riches.”

Then she rained $100 bills onto the audience.

The most casual – or shall we say, Florida beach wear – fashion show was for Flip Flops & Fashion Nov. 1 at Sharky’s on the Pier for Children First.

And, of course, it’s even more cute that Amber Masters matched with her mini-me, Vivian.

DRESSING UP FOR THE DOGS

A different kind of runway show offered a barking good time this year. Donte’s Den Foundation’s Top Dog Brunch had owners and their pups walk the runway Oct. 7 in local fashions. The “Top Dog” this year was Terry McKee’s 4-month-old schnauzer, Rocco, seen modeling with Wendy Rossiter.

A SWEET FLIGHT

For picky eaters, there was a dessert for every taste bud at The Firefly Gala March 31 at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. The plate included a strawberry pear mousse, chocolate dome, prosecco gel and a chocolate-filled orange macaron. The plate also included the signature Firefly lowercase “f” to finish it off.

Who doesn’t love chocolate — especially on Valentine’s Day? When Safe Place Rape and Crisis Center’s annual SPARCCle on the Runway luncheon fell on the day of love, organizers delivered just that. The heartshaped chocolates and raspberry filling were perfect for Valentine’s Day.

This glittery, ridiculously adorable dessert was created by Christine Nordstrom for Foodlosophy on Nov. 1. The unicorn-themed dessert was inspired by a painting made by a St. Jude Children’s Hospital child. Although it may look like a dessert fit for a little girl’s birthday party, we loved the youthful theme and think it definitely takes the cake for one of the best sweet treats this season.

If you don’t love cupcakes, we don’t get you (sorry). We thought it was a great choice to serve a classic vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting at Women & Medicine on March 29 at Michael’s On East.

The toppers donning illustrations of traditional medical items were also a clever touch.

DETAILS The best of the best decorators transport guests to a new realm with their event design. Even if the mission, speakers and event flow are on point, nothing will immediately set the tone like decor — a well-decorated ballroom creates an ambiance that guests won’t soon forget. Although many of this season’s events had style, a few stand out for the attention paid to every detail.

ORCHID BALL 2019: ‘GAUGUIN’S SUNSET IN PARADISE’

Inspired by Gauguin’s work, “Sunset in Paradise” the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens turned a plain white tent into a sunset scene Feb. 9 for the annual Orchid Ball. When you first stepped into the tent, the decor was bright white and light blush, but as you moved further into the tent, the colors faded into deep oranges and hot pinks.

PALM BALL: ‘WOODS OF WONDER’

As if the grounds of the Bay Preserve at Osprey aren’t beautiful enough, inside the tent, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast outdid itself.

Succulents hung from the ceiling as guests stepped into the tent, then eventgoers emerged into an oasis of violet, emerald and natural wood. We especially loved the centerpieces made of twigs and a gorgeous big bouquet.

CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County deserves a pat on the back for turning its campus gymnasium into a space ready for a black tie evening affair. The tables were lit with tea candles and a sea of strung lights hung from the ceiling. Organizers also cleverly put greenery around the outside of the room to make the space even more elegant.

A YEAR for the books So much to say, so few pages. It was another incredible year, Sarasota. We raised our paddles for causes close to our hearts, won prizes in silent auctions, live auctions and raffles, dressed up in cocktail and black tie attire over and over and if I may say, we had a lot of fun in the process.
