fter years of anticipation, the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College is finally ready to open its doors. Sarasota’s philanthropic
community marked the occasion the best way it knows how — with an extravagant gala held Dec. 7. The Grand

Opening function had 500 guests and supporters assembling at the recently completed art museum for an exciting night of cheer and congratulations. The evening started with guests socializing on the first floor and taking in the art galleries on the second floor. Eventually, attendees made their way to the dining tent where they enjoyed a program that included a live auction. The night ended with an after-party at the McGuire Hall and Plaza. The museum, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design, will to open to membership holders Dec. 12 and 13 and to the general public Dec. 14.

HARRY SAYER Buffalonians unite The Sarasota Orchestra’s second Masterworks Dinner of the season featured a Q&A with guest conductor and music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra JoAnn Falletta. But the esteemed conductor wasn’t the only Buffalonian in attendance that night. When moderator Russell Gant asked who else present was from the upstate New York city, about 40% of the attendees raised their hands proudly. Given that the high temp up there that day was 36, it’s no wonder so many found their way to Sarasota.

Holiday cheer Here’s a particularly inspired coincidence — Elisabeth Waters, Jaclyn Brunckhorst and Umbreen Khalidi-Majeed attended the long-awaited Sarasota Art Museum’s Grand Opening Gala on Dec. 7 with colorful dresses that, when combined, lived up to the Christmas spirit. KhalidiMajeed wore a green dress with sparkles, Waters arrived in a ruffled red piece, and Brunckhorst finished the ensemble with a sleek black and white designer dress. Holiday events should have holiday color, and it was good to see these three friends rocking the Christmas look.
This year’s Wine, Women & Shoes raised a net sum of $710,000 … The Gulf Coast Community Foundation provided a $100,000 leveraged grant to the All Star Children’s Foundation to support development of therapeutic interventions for abused and neglected children.
Poodles are good. I think we all love a good poodle, but some do more than others. Take the fine folks at Florida Poodle Rescue on Dec. 7 at the Embassy Suites. Not only did their Puttin’ on the Poodle event have a number of poodles and rescue dogs, but it also had Susan Romine dressed up as a poodle herself. The board member of the Manatee Performing Arts Center brought one of her costumes to lend some authenticity to the fundraiser, which goes toward care for the rescue dogs.

o some people, “The Nutcracker” is like the fruitcake of holiday entertainment — so ubiquitous as to be blasé. But just like fruitcake, when you get a really good one, you realize why it’s a tradition. In 2012, the Sarasota Ballet reimagined the Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky classic with its “John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker,” a brilliant blending of the original fantasy-filled tale with local big top lore and art deco elegance. It’s hard to say when something can be considered a tradition, but if this production isn’t there already, it’s well on its way. It will take another step in that direction when The Sarasota Ballet, teaming with the Sarasota Orchestra, presents its fifth edition of “John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker” on Dec. 20 and 21. For those who might not be familiar with the production, it is essentially the traditional Nutcracker story, only set in 1930s New York, where a young girl and her family meet up with John and Mable Ringling and members of their circus. Later, the girl enters a fantasy world populated by the Ringlings, as well as clowns, exotic animals and circus performers. Choreographer and librettist Matthew Hart’s clever fusion, given form by designer Peter Docherty and brought to life by the performers, is a carefully crafted world. The following series of photos dives into the story of the unique ballet, while sharing some lesser known facts about its production.

Later, at a Christmas Eve party, John Ringling has presents for the children: a ringmaster nutcracker for Clara and a large windup mouse for her brother, Fritz, which he uses to torment his sister with great precision. The mouse is built over a remotecontrolled car, discreetly controlled by one of the clowns in the cast.

The inspiration for creating a Ringlingthemed “Nutcracker” was the resemblance between a nutcracker and a ringmaster. Traditionally, Drosselmeyer’s nephew is turned into the Nutcracker. For this production, making John Ringling’s nephew the Nutcracker and successor John Ringling North seemed a perfect parallel.

That night, the nutcracker and the mouse come to life and battle as Clara and John Ringling look on. In each performance, the cast includes 25 children from Sarasota Ballet School and Dance — The Next Generation, many of whom make up the clown and mouse armies.

Act One closes with Clara running off with John Ringling North to a fantasy world — or in this version, Sarasota, to join the circus. But being in 1930s New York, if you look closely, these snowflakes’ costumes and headdresses take their inspiration from The Chrysler Building and the choreography, in part, by the Radio City Rockettes.

In Act One, when John Ringling is handing out toys, a figure of his beloved Mable is placed at the top of the Christmas tree. In a touching finish, after John and Mable fly off on the moon, Clara wakens, wondering if it was all just a dream. Atop the tree, a figure of John has appeared at Mable’s side.

HOW BAZAAR Atomic Holiday Bazaar indulges our desire for something different. KLINT LOWRY A+E EDITOR
H
oliday shopping can be stressful, or it can be fun. A lot of it is a matter of attitude. When it comes to finding something for that eccentric friend or the artsy one in the family — even if that’s you — shopping’s a blast at the Atomic Holiday Bazaar. The annual bazaar, specializing in “indie craft for the world’s delightful irregulars,” will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium. “It’s the perfect place for you to come and find affordable, unusual, handmade arts and crafts,” says Adrien Lucas, who started Atomic Holiday Bazaar in 2006, along with her friend Cemantha Crain. Since then, it has evolved from a holiday shopping novelty act into a seasonal tradition for many as Lucas and the bazaar have grown up together. “When the show first began, I had been here six years,” Lucas says. She moved from Los Angeles, where her resume included
designing costumes for rock bands. “So I was kind of an edgy rock ‘n’ roll girl.” There were already plenty of art and craft shows in town, she says, but they mostly leaned toward high-end, fine artwork — expensive stuff. “Really, there was a void for younger people as far as what we wanted to buy or what we were interested in looking at,” Lucas says. When she started Atomic, “it was with the intent of having an affordable holiday craft show for the cool kids. “My first goal was to have it edgy, have it affordable and make it inviting for people of all ages.” After 14 years, Lucas has personally experienced a wider range of “all ages,” and it’s broadened her perspective when she considers what the cool kids might like. Her criteria for vendors are simple: “I generally like things that are either nature-friendly or very witty,” she says. And bonus points if the art is on the edgy side. Most importantly, it has to be cool — admittedly an I-know-it-when-I-see-it quality. Many Sarasotans seem to see cool the same way. The Atomic Holiday Bazaar draws about 4,000visitors over two days. Apparently, Lucas tapped into a vast eccentric streak among local

gentry. Atomic Holiday Bazaar benefits these days from having been around enough that people know what to expect, and they look forward to it. Proof of that is the long lines that form at the start of each day
to snag a swag bag. Only the first 100 “adultish humans” who come through the entrance get one. Word has gotten out: These swag bags are worth the wait. “My vendors are so generous with what they give to put into those bags,” Lucas says. There are laser-cut brooches by Carey Borden, as well as other jewelry, coupons and more. Returning guests know that when they enter the auditorium, they will be greeted by Lucas’ “Welcome Wagon gals” — the Bradentucky Bombers roller derby team. They know DJ Buckroe Skillz will be playing tunes to help create an atmosphere that is what Lucas describes as being like a 1990s dance party, family edition. Past attendees come back
dressed for the party in their most creatively distinctive ensembles. With 225 vendors, the bazaar extends outside the auditorium onto Plaza De Santo Domingo for a street fair portion, into the Bay Front Room then over to Art Center Sarasota, which in recent years has joined the party by holding its Art in the Garden craft show, featuring another 60 local artists and craftspeople, concurrently with the bazaar. That event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, with Sunday as a rain date. The whole scene can create sensory overload, shes says, but in a good way. Like the art itself, the bazaar isn’t perfect but it’s made with love, and you don’t see that every day.

lorida Studio Theatre has tons of improv options and is constantly making more. “Last Laugh” is its latest flavor. The format is simple: A guest relates an anecdote, ideally humorous, then the FST improv troupe uses
it as a springboard. They asked me to participate. I showed up at Bowne’s Lab for the first show Nov. 29. The case comprised Sarah Durham, Chris Friday, Will Leura, Elise Rodriguez, Kyle Shoemaker and Anna Weatherwax. My story was about an embarrassing childhood incident.
Under the delusion of launching my career as a rock star, I sang the theme to “Fireball X-L5” to my entire elementary school. I figured this would make me famous. It did, but not in a good way. Leura invited me up on stage. I told my tale and got a few laughs. The improv comedians then quizzed me as to how I became a critic. I informed them that, unlike contractors and nail technicians, there’s no license, and I didn’t have to pass a test. You become a critic by saying, “I’m a critic.” FST’s funny people took that material and ran with it. But not in the direction I thought they’d go. In an improbable audition, various actors then sang the themes to “Full House,” “Duck Tales” and other TV shows. Durham kept asking for “more jazz hands.” Weatherwax played a lousy impressionist with delusions of grandeur; Leura played the husband who humored her. (A friend told her he’d secretly dissed her Obama imitation.) The troupe imagined a hellish final exam at critic academy. Friday portrayed a hard-nosed instructor straight out of “Full Metal Jacket.” One graduate wound up in a makebelieve Sarasota that “smells like positivity,” a happy place where nobody ever complained. Applause. A tough act to follow, eh? But the next act was out of my league. First, the next guest was a pro. Greg Hollimon. I’d seen his face before. I’d seen him on TV — “Strangers with Candy” on Comedy Central in the late 1990s. So, Hollimon got up on stage and shared his anecdote. It blew my little story out of the water. Hollimon had been on a Second City tour with Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert and other luminar-

ies. They arrived in snowy Aspen. Late at night. A no-room-at-theinn situation. In lieu of a manger, Hollimon and another comic found accommodations in a converted storage shed. It seemed OK. On closer inspection, Hollimon discovered hidden porno. Puppets vs. porno? There’s just no contest. Armed with Hollimon’s material, the FST improv troupe kicked into surreal action. Hollimon joined in. First, a series of scenes where porno pops up on all sides. The comedy quickly veered away from porno. In a scene with Hollimon, Leura played a hit man who was scared of sleeping alone. Weatherwax and Leura reprised the couple. Leura got the last word — and the last laugh. “Honey, your Obama imitation is amazing.” Where does the laughter come from? According to Leura, it’s from the stories. “We draw on three elements from each story: specific details, themes and the storyteller’s mannerisms.” The show moves so quickly that it’s easy to forget the actors are making it up as they go along. As free-form as it is, the show has structure. Characters, motivation, scene construction, tension and resolution. The performers do what writers do. They’re writing the scenes in their heads and performing them simultaneously. FST’s improv troupe isn’t content with rehashing the 1990s improv of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” They’re constantly reinventing the art form. Who gets the last laugh? “The audience,” Leura says. “Who else?”

The Players’ ‘Hello Dolly’ lookin’ swell MARTY FUGATE

ello, Dolly!” is making a comeback at The Players Centre. The musical won 10 Tony Awards when it burst onto Broadway in 1964, based on Thornton Wilder’s “The Matchmaker.” “Hello, Dolly!” has two converging plot lines. The main story belongs to Dolly Gallagher Levi (Alyssa Goudy), naturally. She’s a widow, a matchmaker and a fixer. Horace Vandergelder (Tony Boothby), a wealthy Yonkers businessman, hires Dolly to find him a bride. Dolly finds him one — herself, naturally. In the second story, two frustrated, young clerks (Christos Nicholoudis and Luke Manual McFatrich) are stuck in dead-end lives. (Cornelius and Barnaby both work for the penny-pinching, micromanaging Vandergelder.) Thanks to Dolly, the lads break out of their respective ruts. Director Brian H. Finnerty and Assistant Director Amanda Heisey hit it out of the park. It’s a big, splashy show. Finnerty also choreographs and pushes the potential of The Players’ small stage to the limit. His take on the “Waiters’ Gallop” is a lot of surreal fun but nerve-wracking. Goudy’s Dolly is a doll. Her character brims with joie de vivre and never comes off as manipulative. Boothby is comic without being over-the-top as the curmudgeonly Vandergelder. The musical stacks the deck against him, but he soldiers on with slow-burn comic timing. McFatrich’s Barnaby has a goofy, bubbling intelligence. Nicholoudis’ Cornelius is boiling with repressed desire — like a teenager whose puberty lasted 18 extra years. Cornelius ulti-

mately finds true love with hat shop owner Irene (Alana Opie), another widow who has put her life on hold. Her assistant, Minnie (Zoe Smith), is a giggling ball of energy with a big heart and tiny footsteps. Both find love with Barnaby and Cornelius, respectively. Lily Mancini is a hoot as the perpetually weeping Ermengarde, Vandergelder’s niece. She’s in love with an artist named Ambrose (Brett Anglin), but her stern uncle has forbidden the marriage. Michael Newton-Brown’s set design is as versatile as a Swiss Army knife. Georgina Willmott and David Walker’s costumes are eye-popping and colorful. Kudos also to Michael Pasquini’s cinematic sense of lighting. Alan Jay Corey’s musical direction is excellent. Strictly speaking, his vocal direction is excellent. There’s a recording in lieu of a band. Because “Hello, Dolly!” is based on a Thornton Wilder play, it’s no surprise to find serious ideas lurking. The first big idea: Love and money are intimately connected. That’s nothing to be ashamed of — and both should be spread around. The second: No person is an island. If you drop out of life’s parade, the loss is yours.

‘Roman Festivals’ takes audience on whirlwind Italian getaway

to this world he has created. The same is true — and even stronger — in “Roman Festivals,” where the sound of trumpets from the rear of the theater signal the entrance of gladiators into the great Roman Coliseum, leading to the martyrdom of the Christians, processionals of pilgrims to the Vatican, ending with the great feast of Epiphany in Piazza Navona, transporting us to that great Italian city with an increasing swarm of sound. The entire concert program, a virtual paean to late Romanticism, is a series of complicated writing and orchestration, demanding the absolute best in performance from every player on the stage and presenting the conductor with an even greater task in interpretation and orchestral coordination. Under the expert direction of Falletta, the musicians of the Sarasota Orchestra virtually sailed through the program. Principal soloists in every section were outstanding, particularly principal hornist Joshua Horne, English hornist Nicholas Arbolino, associate concertmaster Christopher Takeda and others. And so it just gets better and better. What a wonderful season for the orchestra and even more so for those of us who are privileged to hear this great ensemble. Now if we only had a proper concert hall to enjoy it even more.

ust when we thought things couldn’t get any better, along comes JoAnn Falletta to galvanize the Sarasota Orchestra and its audience to new heights in a masterful, musical journey through Edward Elgar’s and Ottorini Respighi’s Italy that left everyone breathless and cheering. Falletta, the second of this season’s guest conductors, deftly handled the hugely complicated and sometimes convoluted orchestrations of the evening. She has a razor-sharp baton technique, great eye contact and wonderful empathy with her players. She had them playing at the best of their abilities while always under control and within the framework of her interpretation. Elgar’s “In the South (Alassio)” is the most atypical of his works, bursting with Italian warmth and more in the expressive lateromantic style of Richard Strauss than in Elgar’s other and more staid compositions. Contrasting sections of drama and lyric repose gave every orchestral section and principal soloist a chance to shine. Principal violist Rachel Halvorson’s solo was exquisite, as were all the solos throughout the orchestra. Violin soloist Alexi Kenney gave a romantic and elegant interpretation of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor. With a solid technique, grand gestures and ample rubato, he provided one of the most sensitive and musical performances of this concerto that I’ve heard. His Sunday encore was a moving rendition of the Largo from Bach’s C Major Violin Sonata. After intermission we were treated to two of the kaleidoscopic works of Respighi, his “Fountains of Rome” and “Roman Festivals.” His writing combines all the best orchestral colors of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (with whom he studied), Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky and probably others, into what I find are the best possible examples of “paintings in sound.” The play of the waters in the fountains, the approaching of Neptune’s vast entourage and the wonderful setting of twilight and evening evoke such images that we are literally transported
