Jack Daly and Vice Mayor Phill Younger were happy with Tuesday’s election results.

Jaleski, who served on the Town Commission in 2009 but resigned the following year, sought to replace outgoing Vice Mayor Phill Younger to fight any expansion of tourism uses on the island.

Grossman, a retired planner who, like Jaleski, attends most Town Commission meetings, said he wanted to make sure the election was contested.

After hearing the results, Jaleski wanted to thank everyone who

voted for him, and he promised to remain active in the community.

“I had a good time running,” Jaleski said. “I wish Jim Brown the best.”

Grossman could not be reached for comment.

Around noon on election day, Key voter Walter Hackett, who has lived on the Key since 1999 and served on the Planning & Zoning Board, praised the to-be winners.

“Jim Brown and Jack Daly are both solid, proven individuals,” Hackett said.

Brown is a former commissioner and mayor, and currently chairman of the Planning & Zoning Board.

“In every committee, appointed position or elected position I have served in, I have been chosen to lead the group,” Brown said in an email to the Longboat Observer. “I believe I can continue to provide

a service to the community, relying on the history and knowledge I have gained over the many years I have served.”

Daly has also served on the P&Z Board, as well as local condominium boards.

Daly said in an email his top three priorities in his next term are continuing updates to the comprehensive plan, focusing on plans for the development of a cultural center and oversight of burying island utilities.

Daly ran what was perhaps the most visible campaign in both commission races this year, posting signs up and down the Key and speaking with voters outside of Town Hall during early voting.

“Be there. Talk to people,” Daly said, between chatting with voters on Tuesday. “You have to do that.”

Voter turnout for the election was 58%, with 3,699 out of 6,344 Key voters casting a ballot.

Longboat Key voters chose familiarity in Tuesday’s Town Commission election.

Incumbent District 4 Town Commissioner Jack Daly retained his seat on the board after defeating Larry Grossman with 67% of the vote. Former Mayor Jim Brown will return to the dais, after receiving 605 more votes than Gene Jaleski and 59% of the vote for an at-large seat.

At a gathering at the Longbeach Cafe on Tuesday evening, Daly and Brown had similar sentiments for their supporters.

Daly said he is grateful for everyone who backed him, whether it was with a vote or by financing his campaign.

“I look forward to continuing doing what I’m doing,” Daly said.

Daly was happy to be surrounded by friends, family and colleagues to celebrate his reelection.

“This is what Longboat is all about,” he said with a smile.

Despite how little he campaigned, Brown said he is appreciative of the voters and he intends to give the job his all.

“I understand what the issues are,” Brown said. “But, there’s always things I can learn.”

It’s finally over. For now.

The referendum that would have allowed Unicorp National Developments Inc. to add 180 residential units to the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort’s existing 237 tourism units was rejected by voters Tuesday night, stalling President Chuck Whittall’s initial plan to remake the once-popular resort destination.

Longboat Key voters voted down the referendum 87% to 13% (3,220 to 465). Whittall does not have voter permission to add density to the property, but he said it’s a result he expected.

“We were prepared for the news,” Whittall said. “We saw the trend of voters.”

Frank Morneau, president of Preserve Longboat Inc., a political action committee that stood in opposition to Whittall’s plans, said he was only surprised with one aspect of the results.

“I didn’t think it would be this bad,” Morneau said of the margin.

If the referendum had been approved, Morneau believes it would have sent a message to future developers on the Key that residents are willing to embrace higher density. He’s happy residents spoke up.

“People understood, if we allowed this to happen, we would open up Pandora’s box,” Morneau said. “I’m delighted for all of the people involved and grateful to all the voters.”

As he has stated previously, Whittall affirmed that he has no intention of selling the property.

The developer said, after gauging public opinion, he and his company came up with an alternative plan months ago.

Whittall was scheduled to roll out that plan at the Colony property on Wednesday morning.

“We’re going to present something the community will embrace,” Whittall said.

Whittall had announced more than two weeks ago that, if the referendum won approval, he would reduce both the height and density of his proposal, in keeping with opinions he gleaned from a series of public forums. He also vowed to lower the maximum height of the buildings from 12 stories to nine, and the number of residential units from 180 to 150.

In an effort to spread the word about his scaled-down plan, Whittall sent hand-signed letters to Key voters, dated March 1, detailing the specifics. Last week, Whittall shared with Key newspapers an email he sent to Town Manager Dave Bullock. In his email, the developer mentioned that, at recent outreach meetings, Key residents had questioned his intention to move forward with the lower density proposal, and he hoped his email to Bullock would have quashed these concerns.

“I wanted to tell the public and make this of record,” he wrote.

At meetings with Key residents, Whittall frequently discussed how, if the referendum won approval, his company would have helped fund traffic improvements in problem areas surrounding the Key. He also spoke of how his project could be beneficial in potentially increasing the value of Key properties and bringing in tourists to patronize Key businesses.

Whittall’s efforts were not enough to sway public opinion.

Traffic concerns and an out-ofcharacter resort were the top arguments of opponents.

The defeat of the referendum is just the latest in a series of downvotes for proponents of redevelopment projects.

Longboat residents in November voted down a proposal to add up to 18 homes at Whitney Beach Plaza, as well as a plan for one additional unit of density at Harbour Square.

Previously, voters rejected a 120-unit resort on the north end site of a former gas station and bank building by a 78% vote.

Billionaire media magnate Sumner Redstone played a financial role in Longboat Key’s election, specifically in the referendum for the redevelopment of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

The foundation of the controlling shareholder of Viacom and CBS Corp., the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation, donated $10,000 to Preserve Longboat Inc., a political action committee opposing the referendum to allow up to 180 residential units on the Colony site. The contribution from Redstone’s foundation accounts for more than 37% of the $26,850 the PAC had raised as of Feb. 28.

“I don’t really know anything about that, and I have no comment,” said Peter Isenberg, an accountant for the foundation.

Although 501(c)(3) organizations can’t legally contribute money to political candidates or committees supporting candidates, they can donate to committees supporting or opposing ballot measures, according to the website of the Internal Revenue Service.

Still, Unicorp National Developments President Chuck Whittall plans to file a complaint with the Florida Elections Commission.

“It would be a real shame if this election was swayed by an illegal or improper donation to the group opposing us,” he said.

Another donation — $2,000 from the Fortunato Revocable Trust — also has ties to the Redstone family. Paula Fortunato, Sumner Redstone’s ex-wife, bought a unit in Tencon next to the Colony for $2.6 million in 2008, according to documents filed with the Sarasota County Clerk of the Court. It is now an asset of the Fortunato-Redstone Trust.

“I don’t know the person directly at all,” said Frank Morneau, chairman of Preserve Longboat. “I think it might be a relative from California.”

Preserve Longboat has spent about $12,500 of its donations, according to the February filing, mostly on newspaper advertisements and political mailings. The group has cited strain on traffic, beach crowding and loss of views as reasons to vote against the proposal, along with potential loss of property values.

RESIDENTIAL PROPOSAL REJECTED Longboat Key voters on Tuesday rejected a referendum seeking permission to begin proceedings on a 10-home residential project on vacant property on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

The vote was 2,131 votes opposed to 1,525 for the referendum.

Brista Homes Inc. of Sarasota is under contract to buy the 1.8-acre property at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive from the Mote Scientific Foundation for $1.35 million. The parcel is bracketed by Jungle Queen Way to the north and Tarawitt Drive to the south and is zoned limited commercial on the future land-use map of the comprehensive plan.

Originally listed for sale in 2003, it has been unmarketable due to a lack of commercial viability, read the referendum request letter signed by Bruce Franklin, president of Land Resource Strategies, which requested the referendum on behalf of Brista.

Because there is no density on the land now, voter approval was needed to for up to six units per acre.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa will retire in January after working for Longboat Key since 2001.

Driving a four-wheeler as rain drizzles down, threatening to pour, Florensa contrasts the dreariness of the weather with his cheer, talking excitedly about projects for which he and his team have been responsible.

He smiles while reminiscing about renourishing the beaches with enough dredged sand to fill hundreds of dump trucks.

He walks out onto a pier-like sand-saving structure, called a groin, to explain how it helps combat erosion.

He points out the pipe under the Longboat Pass Bridge, which transports millions of gallons of water to the Key’s residents and businesses.

For Florensa, it will have been a career well-spent when he retires from his position in January.

As the Key’s public works director, Florensa oversees a staff of 20 who are responsible for beach management, utilities, town facilities, solid waste, parks and streets.

Since starting his position in 2001, Florensa has accomplished a lot. Some projects stand out.

When Florensa, 61, first came to the Key, there was no plan to update the town’s aging system of lift stations, or sewage pumps, which was built in 1977.

Now, all of the major and midsized lift stations have been upgraded, Florensa said, and the smaller stations are being addressed.

Another fond moment for Florensa was when he and his team were able to prepare the town’s water main for an emergency situation. The pipe that transports water from Manatee County used to stop at the south end of the Key. Today, it’s connected with the city of Sarasota.

So, if there’s ever an issue with the water from the north end, like a line breakage, water from Sarasota can be used as an emergency backup.

Florensa’s final source of pride involves work still unfolding: the town’s most recent beach program. Along with a completed renourishment project and the construction of four groins, the program includes the improvements to Bayfront Park, which Florensa said are 95% finished.

“We’ve been talking about Bay-

front Park since I started here” Florensa said. “We finally got it under construction.”

For all of this, Florensa affirmed that the members of the Public Works Department deserve just as much credit as he does.

As his time as director comes to an end, Florensa said three things stand out that he still wants to see accomplished.

He wants to see the permits submitted for the North End Shoreline Stabilization Project.

To decrease the amount of water that requires treatment, Florensa wants to improve inflow and infiltration, meaning he wants to reduce the amount of groundwater that makes its way into the sewer system.

Finally, he wants to see the town bring its computer system “up to par.”

Though it’s not a project he’s directly involved in, he knows these improvements will benefit present and future town employees greatly.

Florensa worked as director of the Public Works Department in North Port for 16 years before coming to the Key. When he joined the Key staff, he was tasked with learning the ins and outs of beach management. Since then, he’s come to be viewed be as a knowledgeable resource on the topic among his peers, Bullock said.

Mayor Terry Gans praised the entire Public Works Department, calling the employees “the behind-the-scenes backbone of the town,” but he had particular praise for Florensa.

“We’ve been blessed to have him,” Gans said.

THE SEARCH BEGINS Town staff will begin the search for Florensa’s replacement in the coming weeks. Town Manager Dave Bullock said the search is starting early because of the skills and expertise the position requires. “(Florensa’s) job takes a lot of experience and understanding of the community,” Bullock said. “And I think an overlap in that position is important and necessary.”

When Florensa began his tenure, the previous director had already left. The staff at the time was immensely helpful, Florensa said, but he lacked the benefit of guidance from someone who had already held his position.

“I learned by making mistakes,” Florensa said. “And by asking a lot of questions.”

Florensa knew that when he decided to leave, he wanted to have the opportunity to share his knowledge with his successor.

Florensa said it’s vital for the next director, who will be hired by Bullock, to understand the culture of the Key. Florensa describes Key residents as well-educated and engaged about what happens in their community, while maintaining an attitude of understanding and support.

“When you do a good job or you meet their expectations, they’re the first ones to pick up the phone and call me and say, ‘Thank you,’” Florensa said. “That’s amazing.”

These events have raised concerns for a potential breach, which could open the flow of water between the Key and Greer, making Greer unreachable to pedestrians and possibly subjecting residences at Longboat’s northern tip to wave action, which could cause damage to structures.

At last week’s Town Commission meeting, commissioners approved a budget transfer of nearly $400,000 to the North End Shoreline Stabilization Project, an effort to address erosion on and near Greer Island.

ob Bunting is confident about what is needed to address long-term erosion on Greer Island, also known as Beer Can Island.

The 360 North resident and former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official says the two sand-saving groins constructed just south of Greer near North Shore Road in 2015 are not enough.

“We’ve got two-thirds of a solution,” Bunting said.

Bunting said a third groin could impede erosion on the “island,” which is actually connected to Longboat Key by a sliver of land.

Recently, the area has been experiencing overwash during heavy storms.

The funds, which were left over from previous construction projects in the beach budget, will be used to determine the feasibility of an immediate short-term solution, as well as developing a long-term plan for the area. In this case, “long-term” means decades or longer.

Town staff will work with Olsen Associates Inc., the Key’s coastal engineer, to determine possible courses of action, then present these options to the Town Commission for consideration. Along with the possibility of a third groin, “alternative technologies” will also be considered, including Sandsavers and Geo Tubes, which are buried offshore and designed to hold sand on the shoreline.

As for long-term solutions, Bunting said a third groin is the best option.

He allowed that some combination of other technologies may be less expensive, but he doesn’t think it would be as effective as a groin. Anything else would need to be backed by science.

“If someone tells me there’s a

90% chance of rain, I’m going to bring my umbrella,” Bunting said.

“If it’s going rain on Longboat Key, I want to make sure we have a good umbrella.”

Although a third groin was initially proposed with the two near North Shore Road, the prospect was delayed after Manatee County challenged the plan. In a 2014 settlement, the town agreed not to begin permitting for the third groin until 2019, in return for construction of the other two.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said the shoreline at the north end of the Key is reacting the way engineers said it would without a third groin, but he emphasized the importance of considering all options for the upcoming stabilization project.

“We want to get this done right,” Florensa said.

For example, an alternative that will be explored is a rubblemound breakwater, similar to a jetty, Florensa said.

Florensa expects stabilization options will be presented to the Town Commission within the next several months, and the town will be able to apply for the project’s permit in about a year.

Bunting, who says he’s an environmentalist, hopes those who advocated to have construction of the third groin delayed will take note of the erosion occurring on Greer Island, which he said is causing a loss of wildlife refuge and sea turtle habitat.

“It’s hard for turtles to lay eggs on a beach that doesn’t exist,” Bunting said.

WHITTALL’S LONGBOAT LESSON It’s the paradox of Longboat Key: While residents mostly embrace liberty, capitalism, low taxes and less government, the collective controls your property. You don’t really own it.

S

urely would-be Colony Beach & Tennis Resort developer Chuck Whittall knew for many weeks the outcome of Tuesday’s Longboat Key election would turn out as it did.

He learned a lot, at a stiff price, to be sure.

He now faces another tough choice: Come back with a scaled-down proposal, or sell his interests and move on.

That must be a tough call, especially now that he knows what it takes to develop on Longboat Key. You know the saying: Capital flows where it is welcome. Surely Whittall is debating: Go where development is welcome, or fight the expensive battles in Longboat.

Presumably, he has learned this reality about Longboat Key: You think you own your property, and you may hold the deed to your property, but you don’t really own your property. Your neighbors and the town own your property.

They control what you think you own.

It’s a perverse property-rights arrangement, especially in a town where most of the property owners are passionate lovers of liberty, free enterprise, low taxes and limited government.

Except when it comes to their neighborhood and Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Property rights? Truth be told, individuals have few, if any, property rights on Longboat Key. Think about recent referendums on Longboat: Voters rejected four requests from property owners to allow them to use their properties in what the owners believed to be rational uses. If Longboat residents would be honest with themselves, all of the proposals — including the Colony — would have enhanced the value of everyone’s property.

But here’s the perversity of property ownership on Longboat Key: For 60 years, Longboat Key property owners have been more concerned with limiting their neighbors’ ability to create aesthetic annoyances than maintaining their own property rights and to have the freedom to do as they wish.

When Longboat voters adopted in 1984 a referendum requiring voter approval to increase residential density, they reallocated, and to an extent confiscated, an individual’s property rights to the group, some might say the mob.

What a paradox.

IS HE FOR REAL?

You know the truism: Actions speak louder than words. But words can be powerful, too, and inspire action.

If you read the excerpts from Florida Speaker Richard Corcoran’s opening day speech to the members of the House of Representatives, you surely will get the sense he’s not much for singing “Kumbaya” around his backyard fire pit. He’s ready to rumble and bloody a few noses — on behalf of you, Florida taxpayers.

Is Corcoran for real — not your typical “all I really care about is getting reelected” politician?

Going down his list of actions at the beginning of his speech certainly gives the impression he’s not just all talk, no action.

But we’ll see. The Lutz Republican is leading his first of two sessions of the House. And we all know institutions like Congress and the Legislature are bigger than one person.

Likewise, rare is the Florida speaker that Floridians remember for making a big difference. Who, for instance, was Corcoran’s most recent predecessor?

And who was it before that? Indeed, do you even remember that “little” Marco Rubio served as speaker?

You have to like Corcoran’s agenda and calls to action. Let’s hope he breaks the mold and his actions truly equal his words.

A different kind of speaker?

The following is excerpted from Florida Speaker Richard Corcoran’s speech before the House on the opening day of the Legislature.

We began this journey together a little over 100 days ago guided by a singular vision: That we would govern as we campaigned.

And the indictment of our political system is that in this day and this age that kind of leadership generates outrage, vehement opposition and personal attacks.

And so be it. Because everything we have done so far we have done to keep faith with the voters who sent us here.

We adopted the toughest ethics and transparency rules of any chamber of any legislature in the United States.

We shined the biggest and brightest spotlight on the appropriations process and brought an end to the shadowy pork barrel budgets that wasted millions in taxpayer money.

We questioned an agency’s spending and exposed its failures and abuses.

We forced another agency into the sunshine, sued a rapper and won, only to reveal even more wasteful spending.

We insisted universities and local (economic development councils) and (tourist development councils) disclose their spending that has until now escaped any real scrutiny.

We demanded that state agencies demonstrate they are obtaining value for the taxpayers and refused to pay millions in legal fees until a bipartisan audit is completed.

We dusted off our impeachment power and brought attention to a judge who used racist and sexist rhetoric and another judge who continued to serve on the bench despite proven misconduct. One judge resigned and the other was suspended by the Florida Supreme Court.

We have taken on each of these fights because they were the right thing to do, and we will carry that mission forward.

And for those organizations and agencies unwilling to change; who see themselves as being special; as being exempt and above the law, then know this: We will continue to fight for the taxpayers, and we don’t care if that battle takes place in committee rooms or courtrooms.

That is what we have done for the last 105 days and that is exactly what we will do for the next 60.

And for anyone waiting for us to slow down, to drop the big ideas, to stop trying to shake up the system, to cower in the face of attacks, or to cave to the demands of special interests; here’s our message to you: We will not.

Because, right now, there are some who are suggesting that we pass the largest budget in state history. We will not. Instead of spending more money, we will fight to eliminate waste from the budget.

Right now, there are some who are suggesting that we pass a massive property tax increase. We will not.

In fact, not only will we oppose any and all property tax increases, we will also fight for another $25,000 homestead exemption that will give Florida’s homeowners over $700 million in savings.

We will continue to fight for the establishment of 12-year term limits on appellate judges, because, I’ll say it over and over, no one should have a

Many pundits have used the debates between the governor, judiciary, Senate and the House to portend doom. It is actually just the opposite. A robust civil debate is a sign that our democracy is working.

When we get lazy and start rubberstamping bills; when we never engage in spirited intellectual debate, that is when people should begin to worry.

Even a special session isn’t a disaster; it’s just a longer, more complicated conversation. And these issues are so important that sometimes they merit more time. It’s called the marketplace of ideas, and it makes our country the wonder of the world.

I’m not saying this is easy. Debate can get intense, especially if it’s about something important in people’s lives, but we can be passionate about these issues without ever becoming personal … … I also want to deliver a message to all the entities with whom the House has engaged with — we extend our hand to you. Come to the table, sit down and let’s work together to ensure real reform and genuine accountability. We don’t believe the House has a monopoly on good ideas.

We’re willing to listen, we’re willing to talk and we’re willing to enter into good compromise … … We will not fear debate or dissent. We will not fear big ideas or hard choices — what we will fear is becoming one of those poor timid souls who sat in these chairs and never stood up for one meaningful idea or made one meaningful change. acterized my views on development, stating that I wanted the Key to “stand still.’’ Not true. In fact, part of my letter to residents (not mentioned by the Observer) included an endorsement of an alternative plan for the Colony, which would allow the Colony to redevelop up to 267 units utilizing its existing underlying density and additional tourism units from the pool of 165 units already approved by voters. As I pointed out in my message, there are 888 additional units of density that have already been approved, but which are either not yet built, or not yet occupied. As far as density goes, that is more than enough! I do support redevelopment and renewal of existing properties as needed and compliant with our code.

Drivers: Eyes on the road when cyclists are near When I was learning to drive, my father always said that your mind reacts to objects in your field of vision, hence your reactions follow your eyesight.

I have tested, and observed this theory, and it is completely spot on.

If you are looking at a pedestrian or cyclist, your car will drift toward that object.

Drivers should always look at the road when passing these folks ... not the cyclist or pedestrian.

Early voting was a pleasant experience My wife, Diane, and I needed to vote early and found one thing works especially well on the Key: early voting! A great ambassador to the process (Tom) met us, explained the process and walked us to our Manatee County check-in.

Two workers there were organized and could not have been nicer, walking us to the voting room. They even thanked us for casting our votes.

Afterward, Tom pointed out snacks in the hallway, which were generously provided by two women who work across the hall.

What an inviting way to vote and feel like you are an important part of the system.

Voting is a privilege and we vote in each election, no matter the topic, but I am proud of the way Longboat respects early voting.

The polling people we met really made a difference. Thanks!

The focus of the last week’s Observer editorial were my statements on Jim Brown, former commissioner, Planning and Zoning chairman and mayor who is running again for a seat on the Town Commission.

A bit of historical context. In 2008, when the Longboat Key Club filed an application for a new hotel/condominium project, the Observer strongly supported its plan and was highly critical of the efforts of the Islandside community to oppose the plan.

An Observer editorial of the day exhorted the Islandside residents to “If you don’t like it, buy it.’’

In my recent message to residents recommending Brown’s opponent, Gene Jaleski, I referred to that fact that Brown voted for the “massive” Key Club project. The Observer criticized my use of the term massive.

The fact is that the town’s then Planning and Zoning Director panned the proposal, which included a request for 25 code departures, as “overbuilt” and “not in the public interest” and recommended denial of the application. The town attorney recommended that the commission address potential problems with the code before voting on the club’s application. The Commission, of which Brown was a member, ignored both recommendations and approved the application, which was subsequently (massively I might add) overturned in the courts.

The ordinance I referred to

that relaxed the code for PUDs was 2013-20. This ordinance was designed to “fix” the code to address the problems identified by the courts. Accordingly it made many changes to the land development code affecting planned unit developments including allowing more dense development and overall building square footage than the code it replaced. The ordinance also does not require findings of fact, which Judge Charles Roberts recommended in his ruling. This ordinance was signed by Jim Brown.

The Observer also disputes my contention that the ordinance now being considered, 2016-32 would make it easier to allow increased building heights. Here is an excerpt from the proposed ordinance: “The Town Commission may, at the applicant’s request, approve increases in building height above the greater of this maximum height if the required building side yard setback is increased for the specific building with the increased height by two feet, for every one foot of additional height requested, up to a maximum height of 80 feet above base flood elevation.”

Further belying the contention that my statement was false, the presentation accompanying the discussion of the ordinance asks the Commission to decide whether this additional height wording should be included in the ordinance or not! The proposed ordinance, including these questions, can be read at the Town’s website.

FDOT data collection won’t affect study deadline

The black wires stretching across of Gulf of Mexico Drive and poles attached to signs in St. Armands Circle mean the Florida Department of Transportation is collecting traffic data this season.

But that doesn’t mean the coming $675,000 barrier island traffic study, which is focused on Sarasota and Manatee counties, will be completed before 2018.

The state will likely give the consultant for the project a notice to proceed on the analysis by the middle of this month, but is collecting the traffic data on its own to give

the firm a more accurate final product, said FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen.

Half-marathon will tie up Ringling Bridge on Sunday Longboat residents looking to avoid traffic Sunday morning should take note of the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon & Relay.

The race begins around 6:45 a.m. and wraps up around 11 a.m. Its 13.1-mile route begins at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on 10th Street in Sarasota, heads across the John Ringling Bridge to St. Armands Circle and back.

The man told the officer he was homeless and walking from Tampa to Venice. He explained he was searching the trash cans for discarded food. The man had no outstanding warrants, and the officer drove him to the New Pass Bridge, where he continued on his way to Venice.

FISHERMEN’S QUARREL 7000 Block of Longboat Pass Disturbance: A resident called police to report an argument between people fishing on the Longboat Pass Bridge and people fishing on a boat. Upon arriving at the bridge, an officer made contact with the bridge tender, who did not observe any disputes. Two people on respective boats said they had not had a dispute with anyone on the bridge. No one was fishing on the bridge when the officer arrived, though there was fishing gear present. The officer cleared the bridge, instructed everyone as to where fishing was allowed in the future and continued to monitor the bridge.

Regardless of issues with how the planned garage for St. Armands Circle is being funded, one thing is clear: Merchants and property owners are eager to add more parking to the commercial district.

A recent workshop focused largely on design and logistical issues, with those in attendance focusing on how the garage would look and how quickly the planned 520-space parking garage on North Adams Drive can be built.

“I think (former St. Armands Business Improvement District Chairman) Marty Rappaport and his team have done an amazing job in fighting for this,” said Geoffrey Michael, co-owner of The Met. “I think it’s time for St. Armands to be grown-up and be mature.”

The team behind the project — which includes city Parking Manager Mark Lyons, engineering firm Kimley-Horn, contractor Jon F. Swift Construction and Solstice Planning and Architecture — outlined some of the broader strokes of the garage construction at the workshop. A firm plan is not yet in place, but the group presented some design concepts to solicit public feedback, which will shape the direction of the project.

Swift Construction, said he hopes to settle on a construction strategy within the next few weeks.

The project team is weighing two options (or a combination of both). One is cast-in-place construction, which would involve pouring concrete on-site. The other is pre-cast construction, which would involve bringing pre-made pieces to the site and assembling them there.

The project team suggested the pre-cast construction would be quicker, and the group said it would do what it could to minimize the effects on the surrounding residential and commercial

area. Swift said he hopes to begin the project in spring 2018 and complete it in the fall.

“We’re committed to doing the best job we can to minimize the impacts on the businesses,” Swift said. “But there will be impacts.”

In the design, architect Jonathan Parks said the team is trying to strike a balance between blending the garage with its surroundings and making sure it stands out enough that drivers know where they’re supposed to park.

“What we don’t want is people to be circling and circling the neighborhoods looking for a garage,” Parks said. “Sometimes, people hide the garages so well that you can’t even find them.”

Kimley-Horn engineer Mark Santos presented two early conceptual layouts for the garage.

Santos said the L-shaped North Adams property, currently a parking lot, presented some challenges for designing a garage. Still, the group felt it could do a satisfactory job with its initial design, which fills out the lot in question and maximizes the number of parking spaces in the garage.

It also presented an alternate design, though. In the second design option, the northeast and northwest corners of the garage are pulled back from the street, a choice designed to make the structure less imposing for the residents across the street on

Madison Drive.

The garage team will hold at least two more public workshops before submitting a final plan to the Sarasota City Commission for approval. The group is also soliciting feedback on a website dedicated specifically to the garage project.

Although concerns have cropped up surrounding the specifics of the parking garage, the city is still moving forward confident that the community is largely supportive of the effort to construct the new structure.

“I feel like the people want it now,” Lyons said. “That’s the whole thing — they’re ready for it now.”

St. Mary church goes green for St. Patrick’s Day

he only thing missing from the St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 11 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church seemed to be leprechauns.

With green clothes, greener decorations, live music and such traditional Irish dishes as corned beef and cabbage, the celebration struck a pot of gold.

After a buffet dinner, guests enjoyed a night of dancing before the raffle winners were announced.

After the raffle, event chairs Chuck Sobieck and Lenny DiStefano had couples stand up so guests could figure out who had been together the longest. Several couples stood up for 50 years, and more stood for 55 years.

But only Marilyn and Stanley Hochman could say they’ve been together the longest: 67 years.

The evening’s highlight was a performance by the Rev. Gerry Finegan, who sang for the crowd.

New to tango Wendy Feinstein wasn’t expecting to find a new passion at 63, but that changed when she visited Argentina four years ago.

on’t cry for her, Argentina. The truth is, she never left you. All through her days, through her existence, she kept her promise.

Longboat Key’s own Wendy Feinstein returns to Argentina in August to compete in the Tango World Championships in Buenos Aires.

“If I make it past the first day, I’ll feel like a huge success,” Feinstein said. “I already feel like a huge success just being asked to participate, but I’m not unrealistic either.”

It was just four years ago that Feinstein and her husband, Jerry, traveled to Argentina for trips to Patagonia and three days in Buenos Aires. While in the Argentine capital, the couple took in a tango performance, and she was hooked.

Hers is a love of the Argentine tango, which is never to be confused with American tango.

That’s akin to confusing a banana with an orange, she said.

Feinstein’s partner in the Tango World Championship will be Flavio Catuara, who remains in Argentina while Feinstein practices daily at Sara Dance Center in Sarasota, where she met Luis Pena, her dance instructor.

Pena, who has been teaching dance for almost 25 years, has been leading Feinstein since she was bitten by the tango bug, showing her the ins and outs of the art of the dance.

“It’s part of being a dancer,” Pena said. “Being able to use music from the beginning of the beat to the end of the beat.”

Working with Feinstein has been an experience for them both,

AMERICAN VS. ARGENTINE TANGO Although American tango is derived from Argentine tango, the two dance steps are different in many aspects including form, music and choreography.

Argentine tango is fairly improvisational, though there is a basic step.

The dancers perform based on movements from the leader’s chest to the follower’s chest.

Argentine tango is danced in an embrace than can range from open to a chestto-chest connection.

Most commonly referred to as ballroom tango, the American tango is structured around memorized steps and can be theatrical.

The music has a steadier tempo than does the Argentine tango music and, the dancing has broader movements with the upper body, such as sways and dips.

Wendy Feinstein had never taken a dance class until she was 63. Now at age 66, it’s something she does every day.

Pena admits. But while he said it’s hard to express how much she’s grown as a dancer, he can see her growth in how she interprets the music. The respect is mutual.

Feinstein, 66, said dancing with Pena is like sitting in a favorite chair. It’s comfortable.

Dancers at the competition, regardless of experience, dance either a salon tango or stage tango. And though Feinstein has been practicing stage tango with Pena, she and Catuara will be dancing salon tango — the clean cut, classic Argentine tango.

“It’s an unknown,” Feinstein said. “This whole thing is an unknown. I have to put trust in Luis. Luis is the man who taught me to dance. Anything I know how to do, Luis is the reason why.”

Argentine tango is not choreographed. It’s improvisational. It’s a series of steps led by one dancer and responses from the other. And

because her partner is 4,700 miles away, she hopes to dance with several different teachers between now and August.

“It’s just a language I want to learn how to speak,” she said.

“There’s just this body chemistry thing going on between the partners.”

After that first performance four years ago, it was her husband who encouraged her to learn the tango after Feinstein mused that she wanted to return in the afterlife as an Argentine tango dancer.

“It’s a journey and no matter how much you want to be here in the journey, if you’re here that’s where you are,” Feinstein said.

“You cannot judge your progress by where you want to be. You can only judge your progress by where you started. Because where you want to be, you never are. Nobody ever is.”

After a cocktail hour and dinner, the tribute band The Alter Eagles performed classic songs from the groundbreaking band, which formed in 1971. Longboat Harbour hosts comedy night

L

aughter was loud and frequent March 11 at Longboat Harbour’s comedy night.

Four comics from Florida Studio Theatre performed an improv show for more than 100 residents. The comedians opened with an act that had them all adding to the same monologue. With crowd participation, the theme was swimming, and from there, the comics began telling a story.

One comic started, and when another had an idea to contribute, they tapped the other out.

Eventually, the story found its way to involve a koala.

Before the performance, guests enjoyed a buffet dinner and cocktails. A split-the-pot raffle was also a part of the evening.

The gourmet pantry and tasting room hosted its monthly chef series Feb. 24 with Robert Gaglio, owner and operator of Italian Culinary Tours, making fresh pasta for guests as they sipped various wines.

The evening started with hummus and moved to mixed greens with a pomegranate vinaigrette. Next, wine tasters enjoyed a pasta station with angel hair pasta with almond marinara sauce and radiatori with pistachio cream sauce. For dessert, they enjoyed ricotta torta with a blueberry lavender jam.

he clothes at The Lord’s Warehouse may be gently used, but once through a closet is never enough for them.

This was the theme of The Lord’s Warehouse Fashion Show, “Once is not Enuf!” The 20th annual show and luncheon took place March 7 at the Longboat Island Chapel, which operates Lord’s Warehouse. Models walked the runway in various outfits from the thrift store as the audience enjoyed lunch and socializing.

Silent auction items, including wine and hors d’oeuvres baskets, an afternoon on a boat and makeup were available for bids. Raffle baskets lined the aisle.

The fashion show benefits the Longboat Island Chapel and its mission of helping 27 local organizations. The Lord’s Warehouse sells gently used women’s and men’s clothing, accessories, books, home goods and more.
