Foundation shows arts organizations the love We all know that the Sarasota area loves its arts, but one organization proved its love in its recent grant awards. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation handed out $470,000 to 10 local arts organizations as part of its annual Arts Appreciation Grants program. For the past six years, GCCF has awarded unrestricted funding for cornerstone arts groups in the community to use as they see fit. Recipients will use the money in a variety of ways this season. At The Ringling, the $50,000 it received will support its “Art of Our Time” initiative. The Sarasota Orchestra said its $50,000 grant will go toward helping it produce its performances this season, as well as support its education programs, including the Sarasota Youth Orchestras, Summer Music Camp and Young Person’s Concerts. The full list of recipients includes: Asolo Repertory Theatre, $70,000; Sarasota Ballet, $55,000; Sarasota Opera, $50,000; Sarasota Orchestra, $50,000; The Ringling, $50,000; Venice Theatre, $50,000; Florida Studio Theatre, $45,000; Embracing Our Differences, $40,000; Venice Symphony, $30,000; and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, $30,000.

One of its largest is its Schooltime Performances, for which it buses in more than 30,000 students from Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties to attend performances at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The foundation also supported 15 Family Literacy Nights last season. During these nights, families enjoy dinner, a workshop and theater activities and receive a book to take home. In addition to these programs, the foundation helps provide academic workshops for teachers to bring the arts into the classroom, a Summer Learning Academy and a Total Access program to help veterans, seniors and those who cannot afford tickets the opportunity to see Van Wezel performances.

emember the 1960s? The Sarasota Architecture Foundation does. Its sixth annual SarasotaMOD Weekend focuses on the second wave of “Sarasota School” architecture that crested in that decade. But to really understand the wave’s impact, you have to go to the decade before. The first wave hit in the 1950s. Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell and other Sarasota-based architects adapted mid-century modernist design principles to our region, fused different schools of thought and added a few innovations of their own. The “Sarasota School of Architecture” became the de facto label for their creations. Before 1967, their work had no label, but by the late 1950s, it was everywhere you looked.

It was a tough act to follow, but that didn’t stop the second wave of Sarasota School architects from making their mark. These included Carl Abbott, Joe Farrell, Frank Folsom Smith, Tim Seibert and Jack West. Some of their legacy is hiding in plain sight. Call it a legacy of democratization: Their work didn’t simply change the game; it invited more people to play. “The 1950s was a revolutionary period for area architecture,” says Christopher S. Wilson, SAF board chairman. “But that revolution was largely confined to the upper class. Most of the original Sarasota School structures were on the beach or near the water and had little impact on the lives of everyday people. Unless they subscribed to Architecture Magazine, they wouldn’t even see them.” Wilson notes that the 1960s changed that. The second wave of

n exquisite series of glistening glacial images called “Nightless Summer in Southeast Iceland” graces the fence at Regatta Island. It is the work of Sarasota photographer Cliff Roles, who is among eight local artists featured in “The Fence” exhibit at Nathan Benderson Park. This free traveling showcase — the largest public photo exhibition in North America — has returned to the area for the second year, lasting from Nov. 8 to Feb. 8. “I’m excited, I’m thrilled, and I’m flattered,” says Roles, who snapped his shots while traveling in Scandinavia. “I’d just come back from Iceland and figured I’d throw these photos into the competition and chance my luck, and lo and behold, they were chosen.” Roles is among 40 artists who were chosen from thousands of worldwide submissions to be featured in “The Fence.” Other

Cliff Roles is one of eight local photographers whose work is featured in “The Fence” exhibit through Feb. 8 at Nathan Benderson Park. He captured this image in Iceland.
The exhibit draws more than 8 million visitors each year through open-air shows in various host cities, and it is deliberately positioned in areas with massive pedestrian traffic. “We are again the smallest market to have ‘The Fence,’” Jessmer says. “The selection of Sarasota photographers for ‘The Fence’ elevates our image in the art world just that much more.” Participating work spans the categories of creatures, homes, people, streets, nature, food and play. Each photo series, printed on vinyl mesh, comprises as many as five images that share a thematic connection or tell a story. The goal of the exhibit is to bring compelling narratives to as many people around the country as possible. Conceived and produced by United Photo Industries, “The Fence” was presented for the first time in 2012 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Sarasota was tapped as an ideal location for the show, not only for its excellent weather but also for its tourist-destination status and its engaged audience of art enthusiasts. “Sarasota has a tremendous, eclectic arts scene, so this is another feather in our cap as a region,” Jessmer says.

‘Antigone’ tells a story of ancientbut-never-old morals

an doing the right thing mean breaking the law? Sophocles’ “Antigone” probes the question in the FSU/Asolo Conservatory’s latest production. The law is the law. And in ancient Thebes, the word
of King Creon (Christopher Hayhurst) is law. After leading his city to victory in a bloody civil war, he declares that traitors can’t be buried. Even making the attempt is a capital offense. But Antigone (Naire Poole) doesn’t care. Both of her brothers were killed in the fighting. One died on the wrong side, but she buries

him anyway. As Antigone sees it, she’s defying earthly law to obey the law of the gods. But Creon doesn’t see it that way. He stubbornly insists on carrying out Antigone’s death sentence, even though his councilors, friends, relatives and prophets all know he will bring doom to his house and the city-state if he spills her innocent blood. Everyone but Creon can see it coming. When he finally sees, it’s too late. Sophocles’ masterpiece drips with awe and terror. It’s a powerful, archetypal drama from an era when theater and religion were conjoined twins. It’s been translated umpteen times, sometimes well, sometimes poorly. Jean Anouilh’s version (an Asolo Conservatory production in 2014) was witty, cynical and erudite. Seamus Heaney’s translation has no subtlety or subtext; it’s as direct as a sacrificial knife — and just as sharp. He captures the raw rhythm of the original, with smatterings of coarse, contemporary speech. It isn’t precious or pretty. But it’s terrifying. Director Greg Leaming lovingly brings the ancient, bloody vision to life. More
importantly, he makes it clear. The play’s brutal immediacy can easily overshadow its complexity. It was part of Sophocles’ Theban trilogy, complete with a convoluted backstory and genealogy. (Antigone was one of Oedipus’ daughters, etc.) But Leaming keeps it lucid. You never feel lost. Hayhurst owns the King Creon character. He does a great job presenting Creon’s side of the drama, and he never feels like a strawman. Poole’s Antigone walks a fine line between helplessness and heroism. Others might praise or damn her choice. Her character doesn’t see it as a choice, and she has no shred of sympathy for anyone who does. That includes her sister, Ismene, who’s movingly portrayed by Anna Beth Baker. Where Antigone is a fearless warrior, Baker’s character thinks twice about dying for a holy principle. Liam O’Brien is also powerful as Haemon, Creon’s son and Antigone’s fiancé. He revolts against sacrificing her for a stupid principle — King Creon’s refusal to admit he was wrong. The six-member chorus has a job to do, and it’s more than talk. In this production, they’re an elite squad of military professionals, probably King Creon’s security detail. Christopher Blonski, Kenny Fedorko, Alex Rodriguez, Jamie Saunders, Jacob Sefcak and Kaitlyn Weickel sharply convey a sense of martial body language. Even at ease, they’re ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. On a lighter note, Sefcak is hilarious as the grunt who’s contently tasked
with bringing bad news to Creon. He does his duty, but he doesn’t want to be the messenger who gets shot. Jeffrey Weber’s set reminds me of the setting of Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon.” It’s a recently ruined temple. War, not time, has shattered the old order. Alex Pinchin’s sound design evokes a subliminal sense of impending doom. Chris McVicker’s lighting has an equally pitiless quality. Strictly speaking, everything happens outside. Whether lit by sun or moon, it’s all bleak. Sofia Gonzales’ costumes are a brilliant hybrid of past and present. She decks out King Creon in the height of dictator fashion and outfits the chorus in camo. Movement coach Eliza Ladd also supplies the chorus with staves, which they use to stomp rhythmically on the stage floor or thrust and parry in close quarter drills. It’s all very convincing and intimidating. Kudos to the creative team who brings this weird, parallel reality to life. Like death and taxes, “Antigone” never goes out of style. Sophocles’ play has a profound universality to it, whatever the translation. Heaney adapted “Antigone” in 2004 at the peak of the second Iraq war. George W. Bush and the follow-the-leader mentality were clearly the late Irish playwright’s targets. That’s all history now. Stripped of its ripped-from-the-headlines reference, “Antigone” is as powerful as ever. There are new leaders, new wars and new deaths. The play’s moral dilemma is ancient, but it never gets old.

Sarasota Opera’s ‘Rigoletto’ tells an emotional tale EDWARD ALLEY

T
he Sarasota Opera opened the 2019-20 season with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto” in its fourth presentation in the Sarasota Opera House. I’ve been fortunate enough to see all four and witness firsthand the artistic progress of the company through the years. This production is yet another step forward. “Rigoletto” was a product of Verdi’s middle period, in which he was beginning to depart from the “aria, ensemble, aria” style of earlier operas and is in many ways an opera of duets, which gives him more opportunity to explore the emotions and thoughts of his characters. It also involves once again the tortured feelings of a father’s intense love for his daughter, a theme present in so many of Verdi’s operas, likely inspired by the fact that by his 27th year, Verdi had lost both of his children and was a widower. After a slightly shaky start with a few coordination problems in the chorus between stage and pit, the performance settled in and got down to the business of this tragic opera and the father’s curse placed on Rigoletto by Monterone, which was forcefully sung by studio artist Alexander Charles Boyd. Marco Nisticò’s Rigoletto is clearly a man of conflicting emotions: He deeply resents playing the buffoon for the

duke, who is constantly out for new conquests, and he vents these feelings with his vitriolic humor and goading of the courtiers. All the more reason for his fierce protection of his daughter, Gilda. Nisticò conveys all these feelings quite effectively, and although he had some occasional vocal issues, he was quite convincing both vocally and dramatically. His voice displayed the anguish and grief of a father whose entire life is his daughter. William Davenport’s Duke of Mantua is a big burly scoundrel who toys with every female he
desires, which is every female he sees. His lyric tenor shone forth in the arias, but he was most effective in the touching duet with Gilda, which ended in a lovely double cadenza. Clearly, the vocal highlight of the opening night’s performance was the limpid singing of Hanna Brammer as Gilda, the lonely and somewhat naive daughter of Rigoletto, who sacrifices her life out of her love for the lecherous duke. She has a crystal-clear sound coupled with flexibility, which enables her to handle musical challenges with ease. Her aria “Caro

Nome” was simply beautiful. Young Bok Kim returned to the role of assassin Sparafucile, with his forceful and virile bass adding proper menace to his role. He was aided by his seductive sister, Maddalena, well sung and acted by Annie Chester, whose warm and burnished mezzo sound certainly worked its magic on the duke. Verdi’s “Rigoletto” contains at least two of opera’s greatest hits: “La donna e mobile” — the duke’s aria about the fickleness of women — and the great quartet from the last act. In the quartet, each of the characters conveys a different emotion: the duke’s seduction, Maddalena’s teasing, Gilda’s despair and Rigoletto’s consolation. In opera, through music, we’re able to understand the feelings of each character, though all are singing at once. That could never be accomplished in spoken theater. It was given a splendid performance by all four singers. Stephanie Sundine’s excellent direction kept the action
moving in a most believable fashion, contrasted with lovely moments of repose. All were beautifully costumed by Howard Tsvi Kaplan, who no doubt had his choice from the newly acquired costume stock of the Sarasota Opera Costume Collection. Beautiful costumes all. Gordon’s sets have been beautifully refurbished and are lit by Ken Yunker, whose lighting is almost musical in its fluidity. Especially effective were the larger-than-life-size portraits of the duke and duchess in act two. It’s always a pleasure to have the Sarasota Orchestra in the pit, and the musicians provided a beautiful accompaniment at all times. Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi conducted an excellent and thoughtful performance. DeRenzi is a Verdi scholar, and no doubt he consulted the critical edition of this opera, as well as other sources, to be sure it was authentic in every way. There might have been a few opening night glitches, but they were few and far between and will have disappeared in future performances. This is an excellent production of one of the most popular of all operas. So popular in fact that at pre-performance dinner, someone said they already had tickets for three performances and might see a fourth. And that is a strong endorsement if I’ve ever heard one.

The 26th annual brunch saw more than 600 USF patrons and supporters gathering at the campus courtyard to sample drinks and dishes from more than 25 vendors that included Mattison’s, Pier 22 and Mission BBQ. Proceeds from the day — which surpassed $450,000 — go toward the school’s scholarship programs for students. After enjoying a show from USF’s cheerleaders and band, guests heard from the school’s student recipients and from the event’s co-chairs, Pete Petersen and Lauren Henry.

Tidbits
All of Sarasota was enjoying spooks and scares this Halloween, and the philanthropy scene was no different. Krystel Beall and her husband, Matt, dressed up as a vampire and a SWAT team member, respectively, while their children each went as the poop emoji, a commando cop and a creepy doll. Michael and Jennifer Infanti hosted a Halloween party in Cherokee Park that drew around 500 people. It was attended by Erin Christy, Britt Riner and countless others. Christy and her husband, Doug, went as a pair of flowers while their daughter, Everette, was a bumblebee surrounded by a sea of blooms. Riner went to the annual party dressed as Lady Liberty herself. Heather Merriman Saba spent Halloween as Wednesday Addams, and her two children were Mal from The Descendents and Vampirina. Diana Buchanan and her family dressed as The Incredibles, save their son, who was Batman.
Marjorie Floyd recently announced her engagement to Caroline Amory. The pair were engaged in London and plan to be married this May.
Tale of two temperatures Children First’s Flip Flops & Fashion luncheon felt like a proper Florida event, with high humidity and sweltering heat. The event’s new Bubble Bar lounge was a big hit. Some guests partied at the lounge throughout the day, leading to some late scantily clad dips in the gulf, we heard. The Rockin’ Lobster dinner, though, had cool weather with an amazing breeze. Just goes to show you how weird Florida weather can be.

ctober has come and gone, which means we’re well into the fall season. But you’d be forgiven if you were thinking it’s still summer. Even for Florida, the temperature has been hot. But Sarasota’s various boutiques and shops have adapted to the occasion, and quite a few have stylings that can have you looking your fall best without succumbing to heatstroke. “We have some sweaters for people going up north, but most of our options are short dresses, jumpsuits, woven tops, skirts … things you can pair with booties to get that fall look without feeling super hot,” said Chelsea Sluizer, the owner of Bows and Arrows boutique. Reds and pinks are in this season, not to mention animal-skin prints for shoes, clothes and accessories. “If you take a white shirt and do a little tie at the front and wear some high-rise jeans, it’s going to be a good look,” said Jessica Papineau, the owner of Customized Styling by Jessica. Since 1964, Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council has provided guidance and expertise in estate and wealth planning to those with philanthropic intent.
