Deitsch knows how the chandeliers move and how people feel a cold pressure on the back of their necks when alone in some rooms. Or the story of the man who witnessed a small child’s handprints pressing down on fabric in a dark, empty theater. There are even the many accounts of the long-departed John and Mable Ringling still roaming the Ca’ D’Zan in their finest clothes. Even at its relatively young age, Sarasota is rich in history, and
you can go on plenty of tours year round to hear stories of its progress and landmarks. But like any place, there’s a darker side to Sarasota. The focus on ghosts and murder is designed to appeal to people who believe in the supernatural and people who are more frightened by human evil. “The [ghost] tour guides are entertaining people nonstop,” Deitsch says. “With food tours, you have little breaks. … With a ghost tour, that guide is on.” “We’re looking for more than just ‘I’ve heard noises,’” Deitsch says. “Paranormal experiences do replicate each other — things moving, doors slamming and windows opening — that’s very

common. We’re just looking for a little bit more.” She gravitates toward the murder stories, something based on a historical event. But it’s all in the same family — she says murders lead to ghosts. Although she has never seen a ghost herself, many of her clients can’t say the same. People have come up to her after tours, wondering why there was a silent blonde woman staring at Deitsch. Others have seen fallen soldiers sitting on bar stools that Deitsch can’t quite make out. It’s an odd experience for Deitsch, telling stories of the dead to an enthralled and horrified crowd even though she can’t see the same things they sometimes do. Her favorite part of the tour is the end, when she asks guests to tell their own ghost stories. “People come, and they believe,” she says. “A good tour is when I turn around and see my crowd

really listening to what I’m saying. Then I know I’ve got them.” Dietsch says she understands their belief — sees the full shape of the thing — even if she can’t commit to the same level. But that isn’t to say she hasn’t had her own brush with the paranormal. She says she will never forget the day a psychic friend approached her about a dead man with the initials “SJK” who was watching her and wanted her to pass along a message to her husband that “everything would be OK.” Her husband told her he had a friend with those initials, a local pastor who had died eight years ago. “Two weeks later, I come home, and my husband is having a heart attack, and we get him to the hospital in time,” Deitsch says. “I’m the last person in the world who would say there’s nothing out there.”

If something with theatrical flair — and less walking — is more your speed, Discover Sarasota offers the “Haunted Sarasota: Mummies, Murder & Mayhem” tour series that runs throughout the year. The series has been modified to have spooky witch “Seva” guide guests on a trolley throughout Sarasota. The twist now, though, is that the show will have mystery guest characters from fiction and history alike arriving to shock and inform the audience. "Some [stories] are humorous, some are creepy, some are factual, and some are spooky," CEO Tammy Hauser said. "It's not a fright tour where it's the creepiest. South Africa — a country rich with flavor, culture and beauty — has intrigued and inspired Sarasota travelers for years. But on recent visits, tourists began to glimpse the plight of the rural community there, and they have since been compelled to give back through Safari Sarasota. This three-day, five-part event (which has been a biannual tradition since 2013) combines South African gourmet fare with global giving. It is Michael’s On East’s way of raising funds for overseas schoolchildren, all while introducing locals to exotic food, wine and culture. It will be held from Oct. 24-26 at various locations (the Michael’s ballroom and wine cellar, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and Ringling College of Art and Design) and will feature a host of South African chefs, activists and businesspeople. “South Africa has held a special place in our hearts since the moment we first arrived there with our Gulf Coast Connoisseur Club clients back in 2005,” Michael’s co-Proprietor Michael Klauber says, referring to an area group of fine-dining patrons who travel together on luxury excursions. While lodging at the Londolozi Game Reserve and exploring the country, club travelers witnessed South Africa’s ailing educational system and lack of resources. Safari Sarasota was created to raise awareness for the low-income youth there, and proceeds benefit South Africa’s Good Work Foundation nonprofit via its fundraising arm, the All Heart Fund. The latter organization was founded in remembrance of Leanna Knopik, a 16-year-old Sarasota native who visited South Africa in 2011 and died nearly a year after her trip. Honoring Knopik’s charitable vision of helping the country’s children, the two foundations have built five schools in South Africa since 2013 and currently provide high-impact dig-

Celebrity guests from South Africa include Anna Ridgewell, Londolozi’s executive chef; Dave Varty, Londolozi’s CEO and co-founder; Kate Groch, Good Work Foundation’s CEO and co-founder; and Boyd Varty, a renowned wildlife activist and author. There will be five opportunities for Sarasota participants to experience the cuisine of South Africa, including an interactive cooking dinner led by Ridgewell and Michael’s Chef Jamil Piñeda, as well as an African bush dinner (a re-creation of a traditional nighttime safari meal). James Tyrrell — an acclaimed wildlife tracker, photographer and Londolozi guide who won Safari Guide of the Year 2018 — will also be in attendance and might tell stories about his adventures. He produces much of the digital content for Londolozi and has a special connection to Knopik. (He was the guide on her trip.) “I got on especially well with Leanna,” Tyrrell says. “One could see already what a special girl she was at that age. We were all devastated at Londolozi to hear of her passing. But I am thrilled this year to be attending an event that benefits the GWF, an organization that is doing such amazing work in rural South Africa. To see the incredible work the Klaubers do for a cause that was so important to Leanna is very special.”

Tom Aposporos is Theatre Odyssey’s co-founder and emeritus director. He notes that this year’s winners were selected from more than 100 anonymous submissions by a jury of theatrical professionals. “Reading through all these plays really gives you a sense of the big picture,” he says. “Playwrights across America have similar concerns in mind. They’re thinking about civil liberty, about free speech, about violence.” According to Aposporos, the results aren’t softball theater.
“We take it close to the edge,” he says. “Sometimes we go over the edge. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” This year’s winners will be performed from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 at the Bradenton Kiwanis Theater in the Manatee Performing Arts Center. All four plays will be fully staged during each presentation. Here’s a sneak preview of this year’s risky, realistic theater.

Directed by Annie Morrison. With Donna Gerdes and Casey Murphy. “Growl” explores the borderlines of art, conviction and tyranny. The playwright imagines an actual incident in the life of Simin Behbahani, the celebrated Iranian poet. In 2010, she was preparing to leave the country for a poetry reading in Paris. But the Revolutionary Guard detained her at Tehran airport and took her passport. Behbahani was 82 and nearly blind. Even so, she was interrogated throughout the night. Behbahani was physically weak, but in her heart, she remained a lion. Diamond’s play celebrates the defiant growl of her courage.
KAREN CECILIA “IVY WALLS” Directed by India Marie Paul. With Tahlia Chinault and an actor to be determined. “Ivy Walls” considers the dark side of campus life. Camille is a hard-working college senior with her eye on the future. Her roommate, Emma, seems irresponsible. Camille quickly discovers her life is no party — and fighting for her rights might put her own ambitions at risk. (Content warning for sensitive theatergoers.)

Steve Martin’s ‘The Underpants’ delivers comic bullet train MARTY FUGATE THEATER CRITIC
A wardrobe malfunction threatens bourgeoisie civilization at The Players Centre for Performing Arts.
S
teve Martin’s “The Underpants” played in a backstage production at The Players Centre. Martin’s wild and crazy play is a cheeky adaptation of Carl Sternheim’s German Expressionist original. The action unfolds in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1910. As the title implies, the inciting incident involves a pair of underpants. The unmentionables in question belong to Louise (Aden Russell), the wife of Theo (Jim Floyd), a domineering, conformist, macho government clerk. The two were part of a crowd watching a royal parade. Louise climbed on a bench and stood up on her tiptoes to see the king — and her panties promptly plummeted. As the play opens, uptight Theo berates his wife for her wardrobe malfunction. The whole town knows! She has brought shame, ruin and a loss of bourgeoisie respectability! He’s going to lose his job! Louise dismisses his fears. Relax. Nobody noticed. But she’s wrong. good look and went gaga for her. They quickly show up at the apartment in search of rooms to rent. Frank Versati (Scott Ehrenpreis) is a flam-
boyant Italian poet who thinks his verses will unlock Louise’s drawers. Benjamin Cohen (Joshua Brin) is a nervous hypochondriac who hides his
Jewish identity (“Not Jewish! Cohen with a K!”). Cohen assumes Louise is a lost cause; he will settle for keeping Versati out of her pants. Gertrude (Ronda Hewitt), their nosy upstairs neighbor, hears it all — and prods Louise to have a fling with either one of them. You discover that penny-pinching Theo imposes celibacy as a cost-saving measure until the couple can afford a baby. Gertrude thinks Louise can afford a little fun right now. If you’re looking for sharp comic timing, “The Underpants” delivers. Martin’s farce is a comic bullet train. If brevity is the soul of wit, he’s a witty soul indeed. (I would love to see a side-by-side comparison of his adaptation and Sternheim’s original). Director Michele Strauss keeps the comedy moving at supersonic speed. The cast individualizes the well-written, quirky characters with great comic performances. Russell’s Louise is not a sex object, though she doesn’t object to sex. She also digs her 15 minutes of fame. Floyd is hilarious as Theo, Louise’s hard-nosed, hectoring health nut of a husband. (His performance reminds me of Kurtwood Smith’s character on “That ’70s Show.”) Hewitt’s Gertrude is boiling with vicarious lust and gleefully supplies Louise with lingerie and levelheaded advice.
Ehrenpreis’ Versati is his own biggest fan and a bit of a male drama queen. Brin is sidesplitting as Cohen, the imaginary invalid. He gets the audience howling in the scene when Louise slips him a potion that turns his legs to rubber. (Brin’s character cleverly subverts stereotype. Cohen’s a secret Jew in an anti-Semitic society. He is a bundle of nerves. Who wouldn’t be?) Charles Tyler and Chuck Conlon are also funny in their brief scenes as an aging inventor with Tourette’s syndrome and a creepy king. Sure, it’s all very funny. But ultimately, “The Underpants” confronts the transgressive objectification of the male gaze. Just kidding. This is a Steve Martin comedy, folks. Surprise, surprise, there are sexist gags. If you drank a shot for every one, you would quickly hit the floor. Yes, Louise’s sexual liberation hints of personal liberation. Written today, the play would underline the feminist subtext with a yellow highlighter. But Martin wrote the script in 2002, so it is still decently funny. That script is a mix of double entendre (“I’ll slip in and out without you knowing.”) and clever period references to Freud, Einstein and the Loch Ness monster. Think screwball comedy for intellectuals. But don’t think too hard.

tormy weather and a last-minute venue change couldn’t stop The Ringling from throwing a successful and lively UnGala event Oct. 19. “UnGala: the evolution,” the first UnGala event in 10 years, had guests meeting at the Circus Arts Conservatory for a night of socializing, music and fun. Although it was planned for The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art’s courtyard, Christina Fraser, the assistant director of events and rentals, said the new venue was a challenging-but-rewarding switch-up that still conveyed the spirit of UnGala. “It was a lot of work,” Fraser said. “So much of this was envisioned in the courtyard. We had to do a lot of
improvising and reevaluating. … Instead of separating the event from reception to dinner, we’re opening it all up.” While some guests wore classic Black Tie attire, others took the opportunity to wear leisurely robes, inspired headwear, beach shorts, circus-inspired fashion and more. The evening’s decor had the Circus Arts Conservatory in shades of silver and fuchsia lighting. When dinner was done, The Ringling had everyone gather around the dance floor for an extravagant choreography performance from the DUNDU company, which started off with a small light puppet that eventually transformed into a massive light giant. The cheering crowd eventually joined the light giant on the dance floor to rock out to music from band Actual Bank Robbers.

Guests gathered Oct. 17 at Michael’s On East to support the group’s mission to help at-risk individuals, low-income and homeless families. CEO and Founder April Glasco thanked her four daughters for giving her the courage to surpass her own challenges. She also thanked Lauretta Anderson and other volunteers for bringing the Share the Light luncheon to life. The luncheon honored WWSB ABC7 News Team reporter Duhane Lindo and Arlene Sweeting, co-founder of WSLR 96.5 Community Radio and Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. Michael Saunders & Co. Realtor Rachel Benderson received a Community Champion award as well. By the event’s end, Second Chance Last Opportunity had raised more than $20,000. Glasco says the money will be directed toward the organization’s after-school programs, life-skill programs for adults, assisted-service programs and resupply needs.
