MAGIC SWORD From fashion to film — and especially music — the ’80s nostalgia train is full steam ahead. And with bands like Boisie, Idaho’s epic, enigmatic Magic Sword, it doesn’t matter if you weren’t around for the days of synthesizers, big hair and even bigger guitar solos.

Listening to one of their albums is like stepping into a sci-fi/ fantasy VHS tape.

“I was thumbing through festivals, and I saw a video of them in Treefort’s lineup,” says Paull. “I immediately knew I wanted this band as our headliner. The reaction from the crowd, filled with glow stick wands and swords — this isn’t just a music act. This is a full-on theatrical performance and an amazing sandstorm of the musical climate we’re experienc-

ing right now.”

Fans of Daft Punk will draw parallels to the band’s onstage personas, delivering ominous, pulsating synth lines and cinematic, over-the-top lead guitar — anonymously, shrouded in dark hoods and lighted masks.

The musical comparison isn’t far off, either. Imagine Daft Punk and Giorgio Moroder scoring an episode of “Stranger Things.”

Through the albums and comic book art from artist Shay Plummer, the band tells the fantasy story of the Magic Sword, its eponymous weapon — one of infinite power left to be guarded by the mysterious band member, the synth player known as The Keeper. His counterpart, The Seer, provides the guitar work.

Spawned from a 10-day meditation retreat, Magic Sword’s members remain unknown, but rumors hint that members of

Built to Spill, as well as Treefort Music Festival founder Eric Gilbert, are behind the project.

We asked the band to shed some light on its cryptic origins, sound and love for ’80s culture.

Fittingly, its members left us as curious as we began.

“The story we are relaying is one that relies on both the visual graphic novel, as well as the soundscape that goes along with it,” says the Keeper. “It is an ageless hero’s journey at its core, a tradition seen back through many ages come and gone.”

On Harvey Milk Festival’s mission to promote equality, however, the band offered a (somewhat) more … earthly response.

“We are all beings born from the true source — reflections of the universe. The petty differences humans see is merely an imbalance within themselves.”

Rock on.

Ki: Theory offers dark, electronic remixes of classic songs, as well as originals.

Vita and the Woolf’s operatic rock sound showcases singer Jennifer Pague’s vocal prowess.

KI: THEORY If you’re looking for a dark, electronic, rocking version of “Stand By Me,” Ki: Theory is your man. The alias of producer Joel Burleson, Ki: Theory has found his niche licensing his brooding, high-energy music for films and television.

Most recently, his cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” earned a slot as the official theme for the trailer of the Scarlett Johansson film, “Ghost in the Machine.”

“I’ve always been drawn to electronic production, even when I was making rock music,” says Burleson. “My music has a naturally cinematic vibe and emotional texture, which lends itself to television and pictures.”

As for his live show, Burleson says his roots are evident.

“It’s pretty intense,” he says.

“People can expect high energy.”

VITA AND THE WOOLF Listening to Vita and the Woolf, one would never guess it’s a three-piece band. Thanks to singer Jennifer Pague’s booming, soulful voice, the Philadelphiabased act, recently named a must-see summer festival act

by Billboard, packs a deceptively powerful punch.

“I was drawn to her voice right away,” says Paull. “It’s phenomenal. I think the immediate comparison is Florence + the Machine. There’s almost a grunge feel to it, but also a mellow, synth feel at other times.”

The band offers R&B and anthemic pop sensibilities.

The band’s name pays tribute to writer Virginia Woolf and her lover, Vita Sackville-West.

“She was an important feminist and a trailblazer,” says Pague.

“This festival was a great fit — equality is our whole M.O.”

ASTRALIS Harvey Milk Festival Founder and Executive Director Shannon Fortner leads this five-piece band, lending her voice to the outfit’s mix of funky bass, spacey synthesizers and tight percussion.

“People who knew Shannon’s previous band, MeteorEYES, can expect a more mellow, beachy sound from Astralis,” says Paull.

ESS SEE Sultry is the best way to describe Ess See’s music. The stage name of Brooklyn-based musician Sarah Cobb, Ess See brings popstar sensibilities to her songs, founded in deep bass grooves that build to richly layered crescendos of breathy vocals, plucky guitar accents and driving drums.

Her five-track debut EP, “Ordinary Woman,” released this January, explores identity and individuality — all with undeniable danceability.

“Ess See was a last-minute find for us,” says Paull. “I saw her perform live, and she’s just a true pop star. She’s like a siren.”

SARAH AND THE SAFE WORD As their name might suggest, Sarah and the Safe Word aren’t afraid to get a little dark.

The four-piece Atlanta-based band brings a vaudevillian, gypsy air to the glory days of emo, com-

bining violin, horns, acoustic and electric guitar to create an overall gothic appeal.

“There’s something haunting about their presence,” says Paull.

“Sarah is a transgender female artist, which is exciting. It’s fun to listen to their sound evolve into this year’s album, ‘Strange Doings in the Night.’”

‘Beatsville’ creators poke fun at conformity at Asolo Asolo Repertory Theatre’s world premiere musical takes on beatnik culture with a touch of escapism.

They’re stylish, they’re creative and they’re fresh. They’re cool cats who are tuned in to the lingo of the time. They wear berets, smoke cigarettes and prefer intellectual, artistic conversation.

They’re beatniks, the subject of the Asolo Repertory Theatre’s latest show, “Beatsville: The Beatnik Musical.”

“Beatsville” is a coproduction with Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre about the wannabe artists of the beat movement of the late 1950s, during which, figures such as Jack Kerouac used art and literature to rebel against the conformist culture of Eisenhower’s America.

Bookwriter for the production, Grammy winner Glenn Slater, created the piece with his wife, composer and lyricist Wendy Wilf, when they started seeing parallels between the Brooklyn hipsters of today and the Greenwich Village beatniks of the late ‘50s.

“There’s a hipster culture in every era, and it’s always the same,” he says. “It’s always the people that have no talent following the people who do have talent and echoing the way they talk, the way they dress, the way they feel, the places they go.”

Slater says that, rather than being artists, the beatniks were the “wannabes and posers” who had no talent or skill and tried to feel a part of the movement by copying the beats. In the act of trying to be just like them, he points out, they ironically ended up doing exactly what the beats were against: conforming.

“I think there’s a basic human yearning to stick out, to be an individual, and not everyone can do that with their gifts, so they

try to find another way to do it,” Slater says. “Ultimately, it makes you less of an individual.”

The idea for the musical came to Wilf and Slater 10 years ago, but it wasn’t until the past few years that they could fully commit to it. Slater says most people think because they’re married, they would have plenty of time to work, but being married to your creative partner means you’re more willing to give them excuses not to.

“Wendy could say to me, ‘Can we meet to talk this afternoon?’ and I would say, ‘Well I have to take the kids to soccer practice’ and she can’t really say no,” he says with a laugh.

Despite having to balance their family life and work life, the couple eventually found the time to sit in the French cafe at the bottom of their apartment building and work on the piece late at night or when their kids were at school.

He says that because they have such identical artistic sensibilities, he and Wilf can essentially finish each other’s thoughts. So when they finally found the time to sit together and work, everything came out fast.

“We’d have a burst of conceptual activity, then go to our separate corners to pound it out, then come back together and have a burst of activity,” Slater says.

What resulted was a piece that combines two of Wilf’s greatest passions: bebop jazz and musical theater. Slater says Wilf derived much of her inspiration for the compositions from vocalese, a form of jazz in which vocalists set lyrics to recordings of saxophone or trumpet solos, which made for less of an artificial sound and more of the ebb and flow that is characteristic of jazz solos.

He says by marrying vocalese with traditional musical theater, Wilf was able to tell the story of Walter, a busboy at the hippest restaurant in Greenwich Village in 1959 surrounded by artists he aspires to be like, through music.

The dialogue involved in Walter’s story is freer, “tumbling out spontaneously from the characters’ mouths,” which is largely due to the rhythmic nature of the beat movement lingo tied with the freestyle nature of vocalese.

logue presented an obstacle for director Bill Berry.

“Having the actors find that organically and having that rhythm and that style be there, that’s one of the challenges,” Berry says. “Having room for the actors to breathe inside of it.”

When casting, it was important to Berry and the rest of the creative team that the actors were funny. Being the quick-witted musical comedy “Beatsville” is, it required actors who could keep up and offer comedic suggestions.

What they ended up with is a funny cast of impressive resumes — what Berry calls the best of Sarasota, Seattle and New York City. Walter is played by Max Crumm, who starred as Danny in the most recent Broadway revival of “Grease.” Walter’s landlord and the mother of his love interest are both played by Ann Morrison, who originated the role of Mary Flynn in Stephen Sondheim’s

“Merrily We Roll Along.”

The story that these actors tell is one of a man who will do anything to fit in but loses himself in that pursuit, and Berry believes it’s a message that everyone can relate to. He thinks it will make people question how far they’re willing to deviate from their true self to get what they want.

Slater and Berry both note, however, that the message isn’t as important as having fun.

“In the world we live in today, I wholeheartedly believe that spending two-plus hours in theater and having a good time will make the world a better place.”

Slater agrees.

“That’s the purpose of musicals, to get you into that heightened state and keep you there for two hours,” he says. “If you’ve done that, you’ve done what a musical is supposed to do.”

Dylan McDermott discusses locally filmed web series, ‘Sugar’ The actor shared his inspiration, aspirations and what it was like working with Ringling College students.

Dylan McDermott visited the new Ringling Studios Complex on April 28.

The roots of Dylan McDermott’s new web series can be traced to two unlikely sources of inspiration: an adoptive mother only eight years his elder and the 13-year-old girls silently dominating consumer culture.

“Sugar” is a web series about a 15-year-old runaway named Sugar who manages to find herself at the lowest point of personal despair. Shot locally with a majority local cast, the series will expose Sarasotans to a crisis that unfolds before their unknowing eyes every day: sex trafficking.

McDermott began shooting the series — a partnership between Ringling College of Art and Design and Semkhor Networks — in Sarasota late last May and finished in early June. The series premiered April 27 at Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg, with a private local screening the following night at the new Ringling Studios Complex.

To understand why McDermott would create a web series about sex trafficking, it’s important to understand his connection to violence against women.

McDermott’s mother, Diane McDermott, was fatally shot

when he was just 5 years old. Ten years later, he met his soon-to-be adoptive mother, feminist playwright Eve Ensler. Ensler — who wrote “The Vagina Monologues,” which includes a monologue about the birth of McDermott’s oldest daughter — was the one who encouraged him to go into acting and instilled in him a passion for ending violence against women.

“It was really important for me to not make Sugar a victim but make her empowered, and I think a lot of that comes from Eve,” McDermott says. “Her influence on me and watching her work, acting in her work, all of our conversations and late-night phone calls — I think a lot of that sunk in and really changed me as a person.”

Two other women in his life also inspired him to create “Sugar.”

McDermott is the father of two young girls, Charlotte and Colette, and he says when they see the series someday, he hopes it teaches them the importance of resilience.

“I want them to be strong — I want them to be empowered,” he says. “It’s so easy to slip into the victim role in life.”

To get this message across to viewers, McDermott thinks

“Sugar” needs to first reach young girls, and he turns to the example of Japanese businessmen to prove his point. In Japan, he says, businessmen often bring 13-year-old girls into conference rooms to ask them for advice, and they shape their business strategies from there.

“Thirteen-year-old girls kind of run the world in a strange way,” he says. “They have their finger on the pulse of what’s next.”

By first reaching teenage girls, he thinks “Sugar” will make its way to the attention of teenage boys, who will hopefully in turn change their perception of women and how to treat them.

McDermott says that working with the Ringling students and graduates on this project — he directed the pilot, but the following seven episodes were directed by graduate Jason Letkiewicz — was both a learning experience for both him and the students.

He says they never complained ­ and always came ready to work — a reminder of the importance of hard work and dedication.

Asked what he hopes audiences will take away from the series, he references the selfish stereotype of young people today.

“We’re living in the age of the selfie, so it’s hard for people to have compassion,” he says. “If they can feel something in there to help another, to be of service somewhere, then that’s a homerun.”

From board games to Broadway The Sarasota Ballet featured a diverse program to close out its 2016-17 season.

Nothing like starting off a program with a murder and ending it with drunken bar brawl. Just throw in a few tutus and a little tambourine and you’ve got a show!

Sounds like an odd mix, but the Sarasota Ballet’s final

production of the 2016-2017 season had something to suit everyone’s taste with Dame Ninette de Valois’ “Checkmate,” George Balanchine’s “Valse Fantaisie” and “Tarantella” and Jerome Robbins’ “Fancy Free.”

by Sir Arthur Bliss, is an intense and ominous piece. De

Valois represents the game well with all the right pieces and even shows the strategic nature of making the proper moves within the choreography.

The match between love (red) and death (black) become particularly harrowing when the Black Queen (Danielle Brown) and her knights and pawns try to disempower the aging Red King (Ricki Bertoni), who is lovingly defended by his queen (Victoria Hulland) and knights (Ricardo Rhodes and Edward Gonzalez). Brown danced the role of the dark and dangerous Black Queen with strength and confidence. Using her sensuality to keep the Red Knight from slaying her to ultimately kill the King, Brown

claimed power and won checkmate with a cool haughtiness.

Balanchine’s “Valse Fantaisie” is a short, joyful ballet where the lead couple, danced

by Hulland and Edward Barnes, dance a pas de deux and their respective solos interspersed with dances from four corps dancers. The girls performed many balancés, pas de bourrée courus, développés and sauté arabesques. The same steps were continued in Hulland’s solos, but added jeté entrelacés and more grand jetés. Barnes shined in his allegro with a series of brisé.

Kate Honea and Logan Learned burst onto the stage with high energy in Balanchine’s “Tarantella” as a lively gypsy couple. This pas de deux combines both small and grand allegro with tons of turns making this piece one that requires some serious endurance. Honea and Learned’s charming smiles and Honea’s signature shimmies combined with tambourine tapping made it look like a walk in the park.

Finally, the program ended with a nod to Broadway with Jerome Robbins’ “Fancy Free,” which chronicles three sailors on leave in New York City. Alex Harrison, Jamie Carter and Ricardo Rhodes were dashing, charming and a hilarious backslapping trio. You can guess the story line: The three buds go to a bar to celebrate, meet some girls, end up fighting over said girls and then make up over drinks. Purely a fun piece, it is set to classic music

by Leonard Bernstein, played by the Sarasota Orchestra and conducted by Ormsby Wilkins.

T

he sound of furry feet scattering across tile joined the clanking of high heels throughout the ballroom wing on April 20 at The RitzCarlton, Sarasota.

Supporters of the Humane Society of Sarasota County put their best paw forward by packing the ballroom for the annual fashion show and luncheon, which began with drinks and boutique shopping.

The white-attire affair kicked off with performances by Jonathan Cortez and Catalyst Fire Circus before host and auctioneer Jason Alpert began the live auction. This was the most lively part of the afternoon, featuring everything from a whiskey sip and cruise on Sarasota Bay to a seven-day South African safari for two.

Two dogs were also auctioned off during the live auction, the second of which was brought out later as a surprise to guests as the bidding war for the 3-month-old Chihuahua mix, Munchkin, became heated.

The event concluded with a quick yet dazzling fashion show by INfluence Style.

The New College Foundation’s annual Scholarship Luncheon yet again attracted dozens of local leaders and philanthropists on April 20 at the New College Foundation office on campus.

Guests celebrated the combined gifts of more than $750,000 to support academically gifted students with financial needs. Approximately 20 students and more than 60 donors attended, including Black Tie regulars Francine Blum, Bill and Audrey Coleman and Bill and Betsy Johnston, among many others.

Designing Women Boutique was also honored as the newest member of the Diamond Society for donating more than $500,000 to the Asolo Rep’s endowment since 2004. Co-founders of the boutique Diane Roskamp, Jean Weidner Goldstein and Margaret Wise attended, along with Board Chairwoman Ida Zito, who presented Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards with a check for $50,000.
