The CAC’s new tent arrived from Mexico a couple of weeks ago, in time to make its public debut at Circus Sarasota 2024’s run at Nathan Benderson Park from Feb. 16 through March 10.

The CAC’s old tent, the Ulla Searing Big Top, is still around and is available for rentals. It was used for “Brave New Wonderland,” the holiday-themed circus staged by Nik Wallenda and the CAC that premiered on Nov. 18 east of the Mall at University Town Center. “Wonderland” was scheduled to close Dec. 31 but was held over until Jan. 7 due to popular demand.

“The Ulla Searing Big Top is still in very good condition, despite being around 20 years old. But it’s time for something new, different and exciting,” says Reis.

The new tent, which was manufactured by Carpas El Caroussel in Mexico, can accommodate the same number of seats — up to 1,645 — as its predecessor, but it’s safer and more waterproof, Reis says.

“The cupola is much bigger,” he says. “That’s the main difference.

With a larger cupola, there’s better space for rigging and lighting. The emergency exits have much more room, so everyone is safer.”

Reis has put up hundreds of tents during his circus career, which began in his native South Africa in his teens, but this time was particularly challenging.

The timeline was “uncomfortably tight” for several reasons, including a design change made while the tent was already in production and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, which delayed the tent’s arrival in the U.S. But crews managed to get the tent up in time for the Circus Arts Gala on Feb. 2.

The No. 1 circus tent manufacturer in the world is Canobbia, which is based in Italy, but Reis says the CAC decided to go with a Mexican manufacturer so the tent could be transported overland. The big top’s components were delivered to Sarasota by flatbed trucks, which were accompanied by a security detail to

make sure they made it out of Mexico safely.

Acquiring a shiny new tent is just the latest step in the ongoing efforts of the CAC to elevate the image of the circus. Unless you’re new to town, you probably know that John Ringling made Sarasota the winter home of his circus in 1927. The circus magnate’s legacy helped create The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Ringling College of Art and Design, but the circus as an entertainment form fell victim to changing consumer tastes and concerns about animal exploitation.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Montreal’s Cirque du Soleil and New York City’s Big Apple Circus all ended up in bankruptcy, and all were rescued and revived.

But the circus arts evolve and endure, thanks to Sarasota residents like Reis, Jacobs and Wallenda as well as many other performers, patrons and benefactors.

Reis says the biggest marketing challenge faced by Circus Sarasota is “having circus in our name” because of the unpleasant associations some people have from the days of defecating elephants and scary clowns.

Along with his wife, Reis has championed a one-ring, European-style circus that exudes glamour and excitement.

Reis believes he and his circus compatriots are making headway.

“Circus is becoming cool,” he says.

Reis points to the growing attraction of circus arts through the expansion of its summer season at the Historic Asolo Theater in The Ringling Museum.

“When we started 15 years ago, we were two weeks. Now, we’re up to nine weeks with 97% occupancy,” Reis notes. Some of that success is due to Sarasota’s population growth and the demand for entertainment outside of “season,” but the CAC deserves credit too.

In talking about Circus Sarasota 2024, Reis wants to let it be known that there is no overlap between the acts featured in the wildly successful “Brave New Wonderland” and the show opening later this month. In fact, Reis says it is rare for the CAC to bring the same performers to Sarasota more often than every five years.

alike,” says Reis. “Our goal is to recruit the perfect balance of talent and variety to ensure patrons of all ages will be thrilled, inspired and entertained each and every year.”

Making his debut with Circus Sarasota this year is Caleb Caranci, a horseback rider who made his performing debut at age 6 as an acrobat with the Pennsylvania Renaissance Festival. Along with his horses, Caranci has toured through Europe, Canada and Peru and was featured in the Big Apple Circus.

Of course, Reis is a fan of all the acts in this year’s Circus Sarasota lineup, but he named two that he’s sure will be crowd pleasers: The Quick Change Duo Elena and Victor Minasova, who use dance and illusion to change outfits in the blink of an eye, and the Flying Tabares, a mostly female trapeze troupe who just nabbed a Silver Medal at the prestigious International Circus Festival of Italy.

The Minasovas are an example of a circus arts team who has changed

with the times. Before the married couple introduced their quickchange act, they used to have a bear and wolf training act. Given prevailing attitudes about animal exploitation, that would definitely not fly today, at least in the U.S. One familiar face to audiences at Circus Sarasota 2024 may be its ringmaster, Joseph Bauer Jr. A Sarasota native, Bauer is a 15thgeneration member of one of Switzerland’s oldest circus families. A multitalented performer, Bauer got his start in circus arts early, performing such death-defying feats as riding a motorcycle on an incline wire and skywalking on a high-wire. But you may have seen him shopping at Publix.

Reis didn’t get into the financial details of the naming rights to Circus Sarasota’s new tent, other than to say the CAC is looking for a benefactor.

Remembering Florida as the garden of Eden Michele Oka Doner pays tribute to the environment in her show at The Ringling.

“D

on’t judge a book by its cover,” goes the old saying. Well, don’t judge a museum exhibit by its name.

Before I arrived at The Ringling Museum of Art to tour Michele Oka Doner’s show, “The True Story of Eve,” I assumed it was going to be some kind of feminist rant using objects. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, to quote Jerry Seinfeld.)

I was wrong. While “The True Story of Eve,” the artist’s first solo exhibition at The Ringling, invokes the name of the world’s first female, it seems more like a temple of a goddess who presided over Earth before humans came and messed everything up.

When I got the chance to interview Doner by phone, I used my allotted time to talk about her life and how she created the paper, wood, ceramic, bronze and glass works from the 1960s to the present that are on display in Sarasota. We didn’t talk feminism or politics.

“The True Story of Eve,” which runs at the Monda Gallery through June 2, doesn’t have a catalog or an artist’s statement, despite the fact that Doner is remarkably articulate.

But her works make a powerful statement on their own about the quickly disappearing paradise we call Florida.

Born in 1945, Doner grew up in

Miami Beach and was immersed in an artistic and political environment from the moment she emerged from the womb. Her grandfather, Samuel Heller, was a painter, and her father, Kenneth Oka, was elected a judge and mayor of Miami Beach.

The family’s high profile in Miami Beach has continued with Oka Doner, who has been designated guardian of the city of Miami Beach’s Great Banyan Tree and represents Miami Beach as ambassador for arts and culture.

At the age of 12, Oka Doner began a year-long independent study of the International Geophysical Year, a global project that actually lasted 18 months, from July 1, 1957 to Dec. 31,1958. The book of drawings, writings and collages that she put together as an adolescent became a template that would inform her later projects.

In addition to documenting the environment, Oka Doner worked to preserve the social history of Miami Beach from the 1920s to the 1960s, in a book she co-authored with Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Titled “Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden,” the book is considered a classic of social history, according to Oka Doner’s biography on the Wiki.

Clearly, the theme of paradise lost has been guiding Oka Doner’s work for a long time.

seen Oka Doner’s work if you’ve traveled through the Miami International Airport. Her 1995-99 installation, “A Walk on the Beach” and its followup, “A Walk on the Beach: Tropical Gardens” (1996–2010) is on display there. More than a mile long, the piece containing 9,000 bronzes embedded in terrazzo with mother-of-pearl is one of the largest artworks in the world.

Despite the fact that her art memorializes disappearing nature, Oka Doner is an optimist with a sardonic sense of humor. Discussing whether she will be able to find a newspaper article once it’s published, she quips, “Print is in remission.”

Oka Doner’s reverence for the natural world doesn’t preclude her from using state-of-the-art technology to create her artworks.

She’s used CAD (computer-aided design) to impose an image of an aspen from France on a large wall in Aspen, Colorado.

A wooden bench that you can sit in The Ringling’s Monda Gallery was digitally cut, Oka Doner says. “You can’t deny the future, but you can help shape the future,” she says.

Oka Doner’s show at The Ringling came about in a circuitous fashion.

Her art was introduced to Sarasota

by Gertrude Kasle, a Detroit gallerist who gave Oka Doner her first exhibition. Kasle, who died in 2016, was a mover in shaker in Detroit’s contemporary art scene in the 1960s and 1970s.

Kasle had a second home in Sarasota and she gifted one of Oka Doner’s pieces to The Ringling. Not long after Ola Wallek was named curator of modern and contemporary art at the museum in 2018, she found Oka Doner’s work in a storage closet.

tial for a solo show by Oka Doner in Sarasota. Wallek selected 80 pieces for the show.

None of the artworks, which range from massive drawings to decorative vases, was created new for “The True Story of Eve,” Oka Doner says. They were created during the 40-year period from the 1960s to the 2020s, she says.

Don’t call the show a retrospective, though. Many artists don’t like to use that word as long as they’re alive and still working.

Because of the long period of time and the breadth of media encompassed by “The True Story of Eve,” Oka Donner said she decided against

writing a statement. “How do you explain 60 years?” she asks.

Pressed to describe her work, Oka Doner says, “There’s no organizing principle. I’m a hunter/gatherer.

I know where to find things.” She notes that she might pick up some grapes in the street near her SoHo studio in New York City that were squashed by a truck.

So is her art made from salvaged objects? No. “Salvage implies an intention to save,” she says. “I’m not saving them from anything. I’m picking them up, examining them, liking the color and enjoying the moment.”

How to get in the mood for romance Five ways to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day — just not necessarily on Feb. 14.

I

once worked in an office with about 200 people. If you were of the female persuasion and didn’t have a dozen long-stemmed red roses sitting on your desk come Valentine’s Day, you burned with shame. Everyone could see that no one loved you.

The same was true in my mother’s nursing home. The pecking order among residents was determined by who received the most visitors and the most flowers every day of the year, with special emphasis on Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. But there are many ways to show your love for someone, and these expressions of affection don’t have to take place on Valentine’s Day, despite peer pressure and the exhortations of the flower, greeting card and candy makers.

What’s more, the person you shower with flowers or candy for doesn’t have to be a sweetheart; it can be a mother or even a friend.

Witness the rise of “Galentine’s Day,” where women are encouraged to fete their friends.

Composer Farhad Poupel will join Key Chorale on Feb. 10 for the U.S. premiere of his work, “The Legend of Bijan and Manijeh.”

Long before Galentine’s Day became a thing, the late Frenchborn food writer Anne de Ravel used to throw an annual bash on Valentine’s Day in New York City for her friends without significant others.

The champagne flowed, the food was spectacular and you left feeling happy to be single and a friend of Anne’s.

The year after my husband died, I decided to go to Rome on St. Valentine’s Day in honor of the saint who gave the holiday its name. A friend bailed out at the last minute, but I went by myself anyway. It was strange to see what a muted affair Valentine’s Day was in Rome, but it was a luxury to tour the Sistine Chapel without the crowds.

My personal rules about Valentine’s Day: 1) The celebration doesn’t have to happen on the actual day and 2) Gifts and outings should reflect the tastes and sensibilities of the people involved.

With that in mind, here are five ways to pay tribute to love that don’t involve flying to India and posting a selfie taken at the Taj Mahal, the memorial a Mughal emperor built to honor his favorite wife who died.

1. ‘TRIUMPH OF LOVE’

This romantic program features the U.S. premiere of “The Legend of Bijan and Manijeh,” by Iranian composer Farhad Poupel for piano, choir and orchestra. The piece is based on an ancient Persian love story in the Shahnameh, an epic poem by Persian poet Ferdowsi. The program, which features concert pianist Jeffrey Biegel, also includes “The Captive Queen” by Jean Sibelius and Mahler’s Adagietto from Symphony No. 5, among other works. There will be a pre-concert talk with Key Chorale Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins, Poupel and Biegel exploring the creativity behind the music.

2. ‘I LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK’

When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 Where: Riverview Performing Arts Center Tickets: $30-$60 Info: ThePopsOrchestra.org.

Led by conductor Robyn Bell, The Pops is a community orchestra made up of musicians who live and work in the area. They want you to get swept away as vocalists Anne Tormela and Nick Palance sing romantic favorites from Broadway, opera and elsewhere inspired by Earth, the moon, the stars, the sky and the night. You just might feel the earth move under your feet as you ponder whether the stars are out tonight. A second concert takes place 7:30 ap.m. on Monday, Feb. 12 at SCF Neel Performing Arts Center in Bradenton.

3. HARD HEART BURLESQUE

When: 8 p.m. Feb. 14 Where: McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre Tickets: $37 Info: McCurdysComedy.com.

If you’re 18 or over, head over to McCurdy’s to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Hard Heart Burlesque in a show they promise will appeal to everyone from heartbreakers to the brokenhearted. Presented by Marina Elaine and Karma Kandlewick, this event celebrates Hard Heart’s second anniversary with a lineup featuring scantily clad showgirls, vampy vocalists and vaudevillian tricks. Whether you’re trying to ignite a fire with a new flame or looking to put the spark back into a dormant relationship, you’ve come to the right place.

4. LATE NIGHT AT URBANITE

When: 9 p.m. Feb. 14 Where: Urbanite Theatre Tickets: $27 Info: UrbaniteTheatre.org.

Following the Feb. 14 performance of “Judith,” Urbanite Theatre will keep its doors open late for an unforgettable evening featuring the Drag Kings of Southwest Florida. Too classy for the crass commercialism of Valentine’s Day? Just ignore it. Instead, on the day after Cupid’s candy orgy, join the Sarasota Orchestra as it celebrates 75 years as Florida’s oldest continuously operating orchestra. Creative Partner Peter Oundjian leads the orchestra in a one-night-only program sure to make your heart go pitter-patter.

The concert opens with Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” followed by Joan Tower’s “Fanfare No. 1 for the Uncommon Woman.”

Then pianist Garrick Ohlsson joins the orchestra for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better, the program ends with Gershwin’s “An American in Paris.”

Director Peter Rothstein takes an evenhanded approach in this American classic based on a 1925 trial.

“I

nherit the Wind” has thundered onto the Asolo Repertory stage.

Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s 1955 play depicts an early 20th-century battle in America’s culture wars. Sadly, it’s as timely as ever. Here’s the historical fact behind the fiction.

Back in the 1920s, the state of Tennessee passed a law against teaching evolution in its public schools. A high school science teacher named John Scopes broke that law. He was put on trial in 1925.

Clarence Darrow argued for the defense; William Jennings Bryan argued for the prosecution; H.L. Mencken covered the proceedings for The Baltimore Sun and christened the courtroom showdown “The Monkey Trial.” His sneering nickname stuck.

Lawrence and Lee’s play is a fictionalized version of that trial.

Its characters are thinly disguised versions of their real-world counterparts. (Matthew Harrison Brady = Bryan; E.K. Hornbeck = Mencken; Darrow = Henry Drummond.) The play’s core message wears no disguise: Freedom of thought is worth fighting for.

“Inherit the Wind” is a fight all right. It’s a courtroom drama — and the main event is the oratorical slugfest between Drummond (Mark Benninghofen) and Brady (Andrew Long) in the trial itself.

The two lawyers don’t fight fair.

Brady kicks the legs out from under Drummond by denying him the use of scientific testimony.

Drummond puts Brady on the stand as a “biblical expert” and makes him look like a ludicrous

living fossil. The jury ultimately finds the science teacher guilty, but it’s a hollow victory for fundamentalism. As in real life, his $100 fine is merely symbolic. The drama unfolds in an early 20thcentury media circus. Thanks to the emerging technology of radio, Brady and his Bible-belt cohorts look like losers to listeners nationwide.

“Inherit the Wind” is not a neutral referee in this bout. Lee and Lawrence’s script definitely takes the side of science. While it doesn’t demonize the opposing side, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the faithful. Some productions of this play portray this small-town “spiritual community” as dangerous fanatics.

Director Peter Rothstein takes a more evenhanded approach — he’s sympathetic to characters on both sides.

On top of that, Rothstein adds a musical accompaniment to the war of ideas. Along with “That Old Time Religion,” he’s expanded the play’s hymnal to include “Higher Ground,” “Freedom Road” and many others. These songs sweeten your perception of the singers. That also softens the blow. That said, the actors are all in fighting trim.

Benninghofen’s Drummond is a rumpled cousin of Peter Falk’s Colombo character. He’s oddly indifferent to his personal appearance — and his slovenly look puts people off guard. On the inside, the man’s a quick-thinking chess master of legal strategy. So what if the small-minded townsfolk think he’s the devil? Who cares? Drummond can out-think anyone in the courtroom —and he knows it.

In contrast, Long’s Brady is obsessed with his image. He’s a

three-time presidential candidate who never made it to the White House. He’s also a barn-burning speaker and sermonizer — and a surefire hit on the Chautauqua circuit. The townsfolk love him — and think he’s doing the Lord’s work. Brady’s on a mission from God — how could he possibly fail?

(Overconfidence, possibly.)

Mikhail Roberts’ Cates, the schoolteacher character, is a reluctant hero. He wanted to teach a science lesson, not become America’s evolutionary apostle.

Despite Cates’ second thoughts, he doesn’t recant.

While she admires his courage, his girlfriend, Rachel (Brielle Rivera Headrington), would rather he did. For her, the blistering hate directed at Cates hits close to home. The Rev. Brown (Curtis Bannister) is Rachel’s father — and one of the town’s chief haters.

Bannister aptly captures the rhythms of hellfire sermonizing.

His character evidently missed that whole “Judge not” passage – and starts metaphorically whipping the teacher with the Bible belt. Brown publicly prays for Cates’ eternal damnation — and asks God to cast his daughter into hellfire, too, when she won’t say “amen.”

Sasha Andreev’s Hornbeck is a hoot as the cynical outsider who reports on the rubes with sneers and smears. (For the record, Hornbeck’s a distorted caricature of Mencken. His actual “Monkey Trial” dispatches are online, if you’re curious.) But Andreev brings the character to life with wisecracking verve.

David Breitbarth plays the presiding judge at the “Monkey Trial.” He exudes gravitas — and seems to have second thoughts about the fundamentalist whirlwind swirling around him.

These strong performances unfold in Kate Sutton Johnson’s imaginative three-stage set, which morphs into a courtroom, hotel or public square as needed.

Fabian Aguilar’s costumes are a sepia snapshot of 1925. (As the play unfolds in a heat wave, they’re all sweaty, which must have made his job tougher.)

Matthew Parker’s sound design and Philip Rosenberg’s lighting are more dreamy than realistic.

This is a memory of the old days.

In reality, these were the bad old days for many. But artful imagination softens the sharp edges.

It all adds up to a great show.

This production is entertaining from start to finish. But I’m not sure if the medium distorts the play’s message.

While “Inherit the Wind” isn’t a musical, with Rothstein’s directorial approach, it might as well be.

The old hymns he’s added evoke a sense of what America’s small towns were like in the early 20th century.

Fellowship, love and togetherness. Hearing these songs, that’s what you feel. And then you realize something: that warm sense of belonging? That’s what these folks were afraid of losing. That’s why they were afraid of evolution theory. You start to see the small town’s point of view.

Lawrence and Lee had a very different point of view. “Inherit the Wind” was a backhanded slap at McCarthyism. The playwrights tried to be fair. But the picture they painted of populist crusades that demonized the latest flavor of thought crime was meant to be terrifying. They weren’t nostalgic about the small minds of smalltown America.

The playwrights didn’t want you to see their point of view.

They wanted you to see the threat those small minds posed.

C

ircus Arts Conservatory presented its annual gala fundraising event Feb. 2 under the brand new big top located at Nathan Benderson Park. A “Royal Gala” deserves a royal big top, and the new tent did not disappoint. At 55 feet tall with a diameter of 139 feet, the venue seats 1,645 guests.

Most of the 350 guests took advantage of an invitation to dress in theme, and many donned colorful costumes that celebrated the Royal Gala. Michael’s On East provided the Royal Feast, and the dessert platters were the center of attention after dinner with overflowing circus-themed confections.

CAC co-founders Dolly Jacobs and Pedro Reis welcomed guests from the circus ring.

Guests were entertained with professional acts as well as student performers who train at Sarasota’s famous Sailor Circus Academy.

Funds from the event provide support to the CAC’s mission of preserving circus arts as well as continuing educational outreach.

Gala chairs were Julie A. Harris and Lauren Walsh, who greeted both guests and volunteers with enthusiasm and sincere gratitude.

They kept with the gala tradition by inviting everyone to join them in the circus ring for live music and dancing after dinner.

Jacobs summed the evening up best with her sentiments of “Viva le cirque!”

n celebration of its 20-year anniversary, the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast threw a modern take on the traditional cocktail party titled Party in Paradise Feb. 3 at Bay Preserve at Osprey, the land trust’s headquarters.

The well-manicured Old Florida grounds combined with an award-winning sunset helped make it a picture-perfect evening for some 250 guests.

A fast-paced auction was held, and guests had opportunities to purchase experiences in nature especially curated for the event. More than $350,000 was raised in total.

“It’s our 20th anniversary year, so we wanted to do something extra special — it seemed like a party was only fitting,” said Sam Valentin, Conservation Foundation director of marketing and events.

The gala’s theme, “A Masked Ball: Carnevale di Venezia,” transported attendees to a carnival atmosphere complete with masked performers from the Circus Arts Conservatory and performances by the event’s beneficiary, the Sarasota Youth Opera.
