ogt’s Music is a storefront music shop on the South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. I’d driven by it for years but never gone inside.

But recently, my musical friend had a birthday party.

During the course of the celebrations, somebody jammed the sections of her flute together. That somebody had a fierce grip. I figured the folks at Fogt’s could fix it. Now I finally had a reason to check out the place.

Outside, the display window reveals a euphonium and a vintage Kasuga guitar, hand-painted to resemble the Woodstock poster. Inside, guitars and rainbow-colored ukuleles hang like Christmas ornaments from the walls.

Amps, music gear, songbooks and instruments of all descriptions beckon from all sides. Not only that …

Nearby, guitarist Al Fuller is discussing the arcana of chord changes with another musician.

Others are sharing deep thoughts and investigating instruments

in clusters around the store. It’s more like a music symposium than a shop.

So I approach the front counter.

After dropping off the flute and discussing its symptoms, I ask the

band and orchestra director, and Lamont Fogt — became his partners.

“Dennis and his father actually went to instrument repair school together,” Gwen Fogt recalls.

The current venue, at 4209 S. Tamiami Trail, opened its doors in 1979.

At the time, Gwen (another Ohio transplant) was a jazz and blues singer — both a solo performer and the lead singer of the Kicks.

Sarasota’s music scene is a tight-knit community. It was only natural that they’d meet.

Dennis and Gwen married in 1985, and before long, they were working side by side in the music shop.

beatific woman behind the register if this kind of personal engagement is normal.

“Yes,” she laughs. “At least in my shop.”

Her shop. Ah. Turns out, I’m speaking to the owner, Gwen Fogt. She gives me the full story.

“Officially, we’re Fogt’s Gulf Coast Music Center,” she says.

“But everybody calls us ‘Fogt’s Music.’ Or just ‘Fogt’s.’ It’s a family business. I married into the family.”

Dennis Fogt, a transplant from Wooster, Ohio, launched the shop’s original iteration in 1973 in a hole-in-the-wall location on Siesta Drive. A few years later, his parents — Marvin, a former

identity was clear.

First, a no-nonsense business model. Fogt’s Music sold, rented and fixed musical instruments of all descriptions. It stocked songbooks, guitar strings and other accessories. It also offered music lessons.

The big-box music stores offered similar goods and services. But Fogt’s offered something more: a high level of musical talent.

“Everyone who works here is a player,” says Gwen Fogt. “We’re musicians serving other musicians.”

The shop’s talent pool created the aforementioned neverending music symposium. The music shop had morphed into a

musician’s hangout.

“We became like a little clubhouse,” she says. “That’s one thing that’s never changed.”

Fogt adds that the clubhouse talk isn’t just talk. The musicians who gather here form a support system.

“You’ll see a lot of musicians handing each other gigs,” she says. “It’s like watching waiters taking orders in a restaurant. I sometimes feel like a maître d.”

Band instruments were the shop’s bread and butter, even then. That created another human connection: the wide-eyed kids who came in with their parents for a violin or clarinet. Some of those kids wound up taking lessons there — lessons taught by

some of the finest working musicians in town. A few grew up to be working musicians.

“It’s so cool to see parents bring their kids in,” says Fogt. “When those kids grow up to be parents, they’ll come back with their own kids. That’s even cooler.”

Starting in 1996, the shop set the pattern for another human connection. That was the year of the first “Give Hunger the Blues” benefit concert to feed the hungry. Along with donations and music gear, the shop pitched in with Fogt’s Music All-Stars — a moveable feast of musical talent that’s included Greg Polous, Al Fuller, “Howlin’” Bob Seibert, Bob Dielman, “Mighty” Mo Cates, Ed Kinder and other blues

luminaries over the years. (The band’s current lineup will wail at the 2017 benefit, complete with a horn section.)

Bottom line?

The little music shop along the South Trail became far more than a shop.

It was many things: a top-flight music school with a multigenerational legacy; a musicians’ support network; and, yes, a place to buy cool music stuff.

There was really nothing else like it in town.

After Dennis died in August 2004, Gwen decided to keep the store alive.

In 2017, it’s still going strong.

It’ has taken some hits over the years. The big-box music stores

have gotten bigger. And with its free sheet music and YouTube tutorials, the internet has taken its toll.

“I went from having 40 students a week to two or three,” says Greg Poulos. “It’s pretty sad.”

But Poulos is proof of the staying power of one-on-one music education. Click, it turns out, was one of his guitar students.

“One day, J.T. was playing this lick on his guitar for this guy,” says Poulos. “He noticed me and said, ‘There’s the man who taught me the lick.’”

Click points out another multigenerational link.

“I started coming in with my father,” he says. “He was a longtime shopper here and still is.

When I first started buying my stuff, we came here. When I started taking guitar lessons, I came here. Now I’m still here, and I love it.”

Al Fuller, who teaches lessons at the shop when he’s not burning up the stage at The Blue Rooster with the Al Fuller Band, puts it succinctly.

“The big chains treat you like a number,” he says. “Fogt’s treats you like an individual. You really feel like family here. It’s not a cliché, it’s just the truth.”

The office policy regarding personal life is a little different at Moving Ethos Dance Co. In creating the contemporary theatrical dance company’s new performance, “and back again,” Director Leah Verier-Dunn encouraged dancers not to leave their personal lives at the door —

but to bring them to work.

The new contemporary dance piece, which premieres Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Urbanite Theatre, explores the idea of love — specifically, the recurring patterns that emerge in people’s love lives and how the decisions they make in the present affect their lives in the future.

To do that, she says incorporating personal experiences was key.

“The concept of love is something I’ve always been drawn to, creatively,” she says. “I wanted the dancers to express their own stories and tell them through movement. I’ve explored the con-

The performance hints at the often-shortsighted nature of decision-making when it comes to love. People, she says, are often focused on immediate outcomes, not realizing — or not caring about — the patterns they develop and fall into, and how they impact future choices.

It’s a theme that’s reflected in the title. Verrier-Dunn says it represents the middle of a thought, or even the middle of a cycle.

“I wanted it to be open-ended,” she says. “It’s not the start of something; it’s not the end of something. It’s like a mirror the viewer can use to see their own meanings reflected. I hope that’s how they see the performance, too.”

We see each person’s story unfold from beginning to end.”

The idea, she says, was to share a broad range of experiences. The six dancers range in age from mid20s to mid-40s, and they represent a diverse spectrum. Some have been married, divorced, had children, have dated both men and women — others have never had a serious relationship.

Throughout the performance, each dancer tells his or her story.

To help bring them to life, VerierDunn uses a few creative exercises.

“I asked each of the dancers to go to someone they knew and ask them to write them a love letter,” she says. “They were asked to use words that could be used in dance.

Seeing the responses was really interesting. They were so heartfelt and representative of both the writers and subjects. One person even wrote theirs in the form of a spreadsheet.”

She also asked the dancers to write a letter to themselves, knowing artists can often be their own toughest critics.

“It’s been an emotional process,” says Verier-Dunn. “Some people have experienced serious loss and heartache. It’s been

It’s summer in Florida, and there’s never been a worse time to attempt a glamorous look, if we’re being real.

moisture-filled air, it’s hard to find the motivation to get dolled up for that hot date (pun intended). But alas, there’s a solution: the natural look.

Three local makeup artists share their steps to achieving a simple, fresh look that’s perfect for sizzling summer days.

STEP 2: EYES All three makeup artists agree that skin is the top priority for a natural look, but each has her own way of highlighting the eyes to complement a fresh face.

Vincent is old-school in her advice: eyelash curlers, which she calls an instant trick to open up the face without any product.

If you opt for mascara, she says lighter colors are best.

Calhoon advises women who use eyelash extensions to not pile on possibly damaging mascara.

Her favorite way to brighten the eyes is with sunset colors — taupes, browns and bronzy golds — on the lids. Just a little eye shadow in one of these more neutral hues, applied as a smoky eye, makes the eyes pop.

Calhoon’s tips for getting the right natural eye look: Start with an eyeshadow primer such as Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primer (which helps the shadow stay put) and using a blender brush so it’s easy to soften the look if it becomes too harsh to look natural.

Patterson often uses concealer around the full eye to brighten them, along with a highlighter on not just the upper cheek bones, but also under the eyes.

Patterson and Calhoon are also fans of tightlining, an eyeliner technique in which liner is applied to the waterline of the upper lid, right below the base of the lashes. This makes eyes stand out, but the effect is less dramatic than lining the waterline on the lower lid.

STEP 3: BROWS It’s easy to be intimidated by the full-brow look dominating beauty bloggers’s Instagram feeds, but our experts say it doesn’t take much to create an impactful, yet natural-looking brow.

Vincent advises women to use a brow brush toward the end of any makeup regimen because it’s a quick way to give the eyes a lift and add polish to a simple look.

Patterson says the brows frame the eye, and that lightly sketching in the brows using an eyebrow pencil helps the eyes stand out.

STEP 4: LIPS Lips are an easy task to save for last, but Vincent says they should also be a part of skin prepping.

With her clients, she applies a balm to moisturize the lips while she does the rest of the face. By the time she’s done, the balm has settled, and the lips are moist, plump and ready to add color.

Vincent says lip gloss and lip stain are best for a natural look, while Calhoon prefers lip liners and lipsticks in rosy pink and peach. She warns against bold reds, suggesting neutral, earthy colors.

Kimberly Calhoon, an entrepreneur and makeup artist with Ulta, says sunset colors are best for a natural-eye look.

STEP 1: SKIN Skin takes a serious toll during Florida summers. Increased sun exposure comes with potential burns, plus increased sweat, causing irritation or breakouts.

Summer air is more humid, but the sun dries out the skin, so it’s important to avoid dryness, particularly before applying makeup.

Makeup artists Eri Vincent, Kimberly Calhoon and Dawn Patterson agree: The most important step toward a natural look is hydrating and “prepping” the skin.

There are a plethora of hydration options — from face mists to moisturizers — but most say a moisture-rich primer and/or serum is best.

“Because it’s so hot, women retain water under the eyes,” Patterson says. “This helps increase circulation around the eye area.”

Vincent suggests avoiding much powder or setting spray.

“It’s about enhancing what you have,” she says. “You want your own freckles to shine through.”

She recommends using concealer only where extra coverage is necessary, partnered with light foundation and a cream blush.

“If you start in the middle of the face and fade it out, your skin will shine through on the outer corners.”

Calhoon grew up in a Southern household where blush was the most important part of the makeup routine, so she believes it can be incorporated into the natural look if the complexions match up.

“Good Time” is one crazy ride that draws you into its web of implausibility. Cutting-edge brothers, Josh and Benny (Nick) Sadfie direct the mayhem from a familiar point of view, having been New Yorkers all their lives.

Savvy nighttime camerawork by cinematographer extraordinaire Sean Price Williams is mostly handheld and is as frantic as the action playing out on screen.

Slick, eclectic scoring by Oneohtrix Point Never throbs incessantly, further raising the blood pressure this electrifying movie provides. It feels a lot like Michael Mann’s work, especially “Heat.”

It was a risky but brilliant move casting Pattinson, known for teenage vampire romps.

He proved he had the chops in “The Lost City of Z,” but in this provocative piece of work, he demonstrates that he’s a gifted actor. A-List, definitely.

“Good Time” is anything but for its protagonist, and irony is the state of play in this creepygood film. It’s as though you’re watching it from the edge of a cliff.

Every turn leaves you astonished.

Best advice: When it’s over, catch your breath and grab a drink — ASAP.
