+ Birthday boy Gus Andreon celebrated his 102nd birthday with a party the Sahib Shriner Bingo Unit threw for him Sept. 24.

Andreon is the oldest PGA golfer in the U.S. and lives at Palm-Aire Country Club. Andreon became a professional golfer with the PGA after his tenure in the Army under Gen. George Patton in World War II. When he was in the PGA, he tied the course record at Edgewater Country Club, in Pittsburgh, with a 66. He holds two other course records at St. Claire Country Club, and for 30 years he was the golf pro at Edegwood. Today, he plays three times a week and normally shoots 80s.

Eva Rey in review: year two Lakewood Ranch Town Hall’s executive director again earned glowing reviews from supervisors, but she struggles to hide her affection for work.

EAST COUNTY — Sitting among 152 dead snakes and a stuffed bobcat, a group of Manatee County natives, some of them fifth generation, reminisced about a place that hasn’t changed all that much.

Except now the roads leading to it are paved. And there is no longer a laundromat inside the restaurant — where more tables cover what was once a dance floor.

“You go back to your roots here,” said Tammy Lowe, the granddaughter of former Manatee County Commissioner Ralph Clark. “I used to ride my horse out here from Lock-

LAKEWOOD RANCH — For someone so inclusive, she brought her cat, Mr. Darcy, to work as an icebreaker, Eva Rey operates in secret when she must.

When her evaluators aren’t watching, Rey slips outside Lakewood Ranch Town Hall with fistfuls of paperwork and bolts for her Main Street apartment.

There, Rey will work after hours, undetected, she hopes.

In the only change from last year’s glowing review, Rey’s second-year evaluation in her role as executive director of Lakewood Ranch Town Hall shows she can be sneakier — and better at balancing work and life.

“If the worst thing they say about me is I work too hard for this community, I’ll take that hit,” Rey said.

In his review, Tom Green, the chairman of the Inner-District Authority, the mix of community development district representatives that hired Rey, commends her ability to communicate ideas and persuade their value to people.

So he buys Rey’s attempts at balance.

However she does it, Rey, the former aspiring psychologist, has managed to function quite well.

Rey, entering the last year of a three-year contract, has provided a voice and identity for Lakewood Ranch’s CDDs through a new website; improved processes and the accessibility of records; and better customer relations with residents, boards, media and outside groups.

The biggest project to date under her watch — Town Hall’s new maintenance building — is on time and under budget.

CDD meetings operate smoothly, like an assembly line, but also more intimately, like customized service, and rarely go past budgeted time.

Phase one of the CDD’s irrigation plan proved successful, as Town Hall rolled out a rebate program to promote the use of soil-moisture sensors, in a move to save water.

Rey, a persistent goal setter who runs her staff meetings in a small “war room” attached to her office, believes she hasn’t done enough.

“I am always very critical of myself,” Rey said. “I look back and see things I could have done differently. I look back and say, ‘Wow. I’ve done a lot.’ But, amazingly, I could have done more.”

Rey won’t point to specifics because she doesn’t like to look back.

A Florida native, Rey grew up in Brooksville, where her family owns a drug store. She learned how to run a business, but Rey drifted from the family path. She thought she’d be a psychologist and obtained a bachelor’s degree in the subject.

A job working as a secretary at the Department of Children and Families from 2000 to 2002 proved to be the catalyst for changing her career.

Her supervisor, a retired military officer who commanded respect without barking orders, introduced her to working in the public-service sector.

When he left to become county administrator of Marion County, Rey joined him as his deputy.

During that time, she went back to school to earn her master’s degree in public administration. She joined the Village Center CDD, where she served as director of purchasing and sup-

Rey only came to Lakewood Ranch after a recruiter the IDA hired found her.

“That was the first time I had to do an interview in years,” Rey said.

Now in control of her career, Rey struggles to cede it.

She’s the webmaster of Town Hall’s new website and she can even do basic HTML code.

“I’m always looking for continuous improvement,” Rey said.

“I’ve learned you can’t always get everything right. Now that we’ve gotten things to a stable place with customer service and setting our core values, we can move more into performance measurement and planning.”

Looking ahead, the CDDs will prepare their first annual report this year.

Rey had her first meeting with the CDDs’ new auditor Sept. 26.

There will be things for which Rey can’t plan.

Rey has set up a comment card system (she says none of the remarks has been negative) through which she can get direct feedback from residents.

The process has resulted in small changes — after a resident complained of hard-to-find bike racks, Town Hall installed a new one in front of the building — that form a bigger theme.

“There’s been a huge shift in how residents perceive us,” Rey said. “And I am so very proud of

that.”

It also matters to Rey how coworkers view her.

Rey still brings her fondness for cats, if not Mr. Darcy, himself, into the workplace.

Before department meetings in the “war room,” Rey puts up a motivational quote matched with a Lolcat — an image of a cat with humorous text.

Rey does manage to get out of the office.

She was the hamburger judge at Woodland Community Church’s annual festival.

“Things should never be stagnant,” Rey said. “I’m not afraid to take the next step.”

Reflective ASH ART

sprayed onto it — its color changes depending on how you tilt it.

Engel cremated Kiki and now wears her dog’s ashes in the form of a necklace.

Crafting with Kiki’s ashes felt normal. But the ide of handling ashes of people and creatures she didn’t know, and hearing stories from grieving customers, felt strange.

But, then, a friend called, with a story and a bag of cat ashes.

Soon, others called.

Engel learned to keep the calls short.

Tearful phone calls made it difficult to focus on the job.

An elderly woman called to say she had lost four dogs in a house fire. Engel could soon describe the dog’s personalities in detail.

Engel transformed the dogs’ ashes into one rainbow-colored piece, but not before she learned a lesson.

“It’s cool to hear their stories,” Engel said, “but, then, I attach myself to them. I began to see it as a business.

Dealing with death and handling ashes does not bother me. I learned to separate the personal part of it from what I do.”

Engel traveled to National Funeral Director Association conferences, 10 of them in as many years, to create relationships with soon-tobe partners.

She pitched the jewelry alongside people selling caskets.

“Funerals and death always scared me,” Engel said. “At first, I was like, ‘What

Today, most of Engel’s business comes from partnering with funeral homes.

A person will give the funeral home director a specifically prescribed amount of ashes along with a form detailing the type of jewelry they want — rings, earrings, pendants.

“If they want a Green Bay Packer design, I will give them that,” Engel said. “If they want a jellyfish design, I will give them that. Whatever makes them happy.”

The funeral home director sends the ashes and the order to Engel. She also partners with veterinarians and flower shops.

Other people send an order — and ashes — directly to Engel.

It took Engel eight months to develop the artistic process she uses today — an assembly line so efficient she can make 15 pieces at a time.

On this day, Engel completes an order from a funeral home in Columbia, Tenn.

The order is unique. It doesn’t call for jewelry at all.

Engel has been assigned to create a dark-redand-gold frame with “Dad” printed on it, along with his date of birth and death.

First, Engel measures and cuts the base of the piece, a nearly 3-inch piece of shiny black fusible

glass — not reflective, like the dichroic glass.

She then slices four small squares of black cherry dichroic glass. She grinds each piece on a spinning grinding machine, shaving off excess glass to make a perfect square.

Engel glues each piece onto the black base and will wait three to four days for it to dry.

When they dry, she pours ashes onto another black piece of glass. She spreads the ashes out using a sharp dentist tool.

The ashes can either be visible (it looks like sand when it’s finished) or rest inside the piece, depending on the customer’s preference.

Engel sandwiches the black glass with the ashes onto her base with four tiles.

She covers the entire piece with a larger silver-blue radium glass, which will help the frame melt together.

She places the completed frame in the oven and leaves it there for 12 hours.

The entire process takes two to three weeks.

When it’s finished, Engel mails the excess ashes — many send more than required — back to the owner.

She will likely receive a thank-you card, which she will hang next to the photo of the bird.

Then, the cycle begins again.

“I feel their pain,” Engel said. “I know what they’re going through. But I have to keep professional, just like the funeral directors do.”

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The funeral home sends Silvia Engel a vial filled with a quarter teaspoon of ashes attached with an order form.

Inside her home art studio in the Central Park neighborhood of Lakewood Ranch, Engel fills the custom order.

One of three kilns, heated to 1,325 degrees, will fire the dark powdery remains into colorful glass art.

Engel works during the brightest part of the day. She wears a pink apron and listens to pop music while she works — a reflection of the “magical process” of memorializing loved ones through jewelry.

Clipped to the wall, a photograph — this one of a bird — reminds Engel whom she will be memorializing.

Engel, a Veracruz, Mexico, native, crafts made-to-order cremation jewelry for people who have lost loved ones — family members, friends, pets and even a Kentucky Derby race horse.

The process is Engel’s fulltime business, called Love Ashes.

She started the business in 2007 when she lived in Iowa, after her dog, Kiki, died.

Engel, always artsy, especially in non-oil paints, ceramics and pottery, Googled, “How to memorialize your dog.”

She learned about dichroic glass, which NASA used in satellite mirrors.

She learned the glass has unique reflective and refractive properties, because of thin layers of metal oxides

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Schroeder-Manatee Ranch Inc. (SMR) and Starwood Land Ventures LLC have formed a new joint venture to acquire the remaining land in Country Club East.

The deal covers roughly 475 acres, or more than 600 existing and yet-to-be-developed lots.

The new joint entity, SLV II CCE Venture LP, purchased the property Schroeder-Manatee Ranch affiliate, Country Club East Investors LLC, for $23.4 million.

LWR Communities LLC will continue to be the project manager for the property owned by the joint venture.

As part of the joint venture, the partnership will help with the construction of a more than 10,000-square-foot clubhouse and driving range at the at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club’s Royal Lakes Golf Course.

The golf course itself was not part of the sale, and SMR will retain ownership of it.

In August, SMR announced a list of new projects, including the addition of a doubled-ended driving range and practice area at Royal Lakes Golf Course.

Those improvements will be followed by the construction of a permanent 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot clubhouse with a golf shop and bar and grill, as well as a paved parking lot.

SMR previously said construction on the driving range would occur in 2014. Construction of the clubhouse will start in 2014 and finish in 2015.

Starwood Land Ventures is a Lakewood Ranch-based residential real-estate firm, focused on land acquisition, development and financing, particularly for large residential master-planned communities, mixed-use projects, land entitlement and development.

“SLV has been headquartered here for years and is familiar with SMR’s ideals and Lakewood Ranch as a community,” saud SMR President and CEO Rex Jensen said.

while he is home. However, not having access to the tracks also means other teams have an advantage, Allen Morrell says.

Conner and his family have driven and flown across the country for his races. Because there are few races in Florida, the family has to travel as far as New York for Conner and his teammate, Danny Sams, to compete. But the hard work has paid off.

Conner and Danny are planning to attend USAC’s “Night of Champions” national awards banquet later this year.

Like all boys young and old, Conner Morrell likes to drive fast. Unlike other boys, Connor gets to drive fast in national races. Conner is a fourth-grader at Rowlett Elementary and is also the USAC Northeast Series Champion in Junior Animal and third-place winner in Junior Honda.

Past winners of the USAC Northeast Series, which has been celebrating American racing since 1956, have gone on to become Indy 500 champions and champions in other motorsports. Conner has been driving for nearly five years and doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

His favorite thing about racing?

“Winning,” he says while outfitted in his royal blue racing suit, Monday, at his school.

Conner’s vehicles are adorned with stickers from past races and sponsors.

At the rate he’s going, Conner’s father, Allen Morrell, says he could be driving cars at 13. Currently, the 9-year-old is transitioning from Junior Honda and Junior Animal vehicles to the more powerful LT 160.

Next year, Allen Morrell plans on his son driving his LT 160 full time.

Balancing school and racing is important to Allen Morrell. Because there are only a few racetracks large enough to practice on in the state, Conner is able to focus on school

An official from the U.S. Coast Guard says he has seen nothing from public comment that would change the conclusion of a draft his agency oversaw that said the proposed Fort Hamer Bridge would be permitted.

The public-comment period on the proposed two-lane bridge — which would connect Fort Hamer Park to Upper Manatee River Road and provide an alternative north-south transportation route between areas east of Interstate 75 — ended Aug. 19.

Comments submitted to the Coast Guard and heard at a public meeting Aug. 7, when the Coast Guard presented a draft of an environmental-impact statement written by the URS Corp. that recommends the bridge be built, will be considered in the final recommendation.

“Nothing that has gotten through the docket would shift the decision that the Fort Hamer Bridge is the most desired and reasonable alternative to meet the project,” said Randy Overton, the Coast Guard project manager who is overseeing the environmental-impact statement (EIS).

URS’s draft statement declared the Fort Hamer Bridge as the most viable north-south bridge alternative compared to two others: expanding the Rye Road Bridge or doing nothing.

Overton said he doesn’t expect the final EIS to be published until mid- to late November.

He also said the Coast Guard cannot issue permits unless the state approves it, a process that will require review by Gov. Rick Scott’s cabinet.

Manatee County has said the public does not use the 19.4-acre parcel of land at Lake Manatee State Park — a strip along the far western border on the west side of Dam Road.

The surplus lands list is part of the state’s Florida Forever land-buying program, which Gov. Rick Scott backs.

For the program, lawmakers agreed to put up $20 million in state funding in the new budget and allowed the DEP to generate an additional $50 million through the sale of state-owned land deemed no longer critical to the state’s conservation efforts.

The $70 million will then be used to buy conservation considered more critical to preserve.

Small aesthetics aside, the legendary Linger Lodge & Campground has stayed true to its Old Florida roots — and many hope it stays that way as it changes hands another time.

The owners of the campground and restaurant, Marvin Kaplan and Mike Bennett, the Manatee County supervisor of elections, have put it up for sale.

They had hoped to develop the 10-acre property along the Braden River when they bought it for $3 million in 2005 from founder Frank Gamsky, who turned a rattlesnake-infested pit into a picnic business and, then, a road kill-themed restaurant.

Its menu, famous for unusual offerings such as gator nuggets and frog legs, earned the business a feature spot on the Food Network’s “Al Roker’s Weird Restaurants.”

Since they took over, Kaplan and Bennett have puchased a 10-acre former hunting camp across the river, plus three other smaller parcels, expanding Linger Lodge to 22 acres.

The partners put Linger Lodge up for auction once before, in 2008, but did not receive a sufficient bid.

Kaplan said they waited out the economy. He believes now is the right time to strike a deal.

“The world has changed since 2005 and so have we,” Kaplan said. “We hope whoever buys it keeps the place like it is. People love that restaurant.”

Kaplan said it’s possible the RV park can be sold separately from the restaurant.

He added he’d be happy to keep the restaurant and sell the park.

STAFF CHANGES

Linger Lodge Road, leading up to the campground, had once been covered in dirt.

But the owners realize they have little say about what happens next.

David LaRusso, the general manager of the Linger Lodge restaurant, knows about the sensitivity of change.

When he assumed his role in 2010, LaRusso tweaked the menu to offer healthier options and added live music on weekends.

“We went from paper and plastic to a glass operation,” LaRusso said.

He tried to make the spot attractive and visible to more people, even adding the restaurant’s address to the menu to make it easier to find, without sacrificing its character.

The restaurant still carries its farce “roadkill” menu, which features items such as “chunk of skunk” and the “flat cat: served as a single or in a stack.”

The Braden River Kayak and Americana Music Fest now calls this place home, as it will for another time Oct. 12, as does the Rocky Bottom Bluegrass Festival.

“This is a dying breed,” LaRusso said. “There are maybe two to three places like quintessential Old Florida on this coast. To lose it would be kind of heartbreaking.”

LaRusso adds that his 20 to 30

person staff, a mixture of parttime and full-time staffers that shifts during season, has remained consistent, and business has doubled since he took over.

He’s proud business has stayed strong enough to support staffers, and he worries about their fate.

“I take pride that folks who come to work here can count on it to put food on the table,” LaRusso said.

Gamsky, the quirky 82-yearold founder known for being a self-taught taxidermist, no longer lingers here much.

As recently as 2005, even after selling it, he worked 60 hours weekly at the restaurant. Now, he comes here occasionally for dinner.

If he had come on this day in late September, he would have seen a church group of 120 people book a reservation for the restaurant — during slow season.

He’d also probably have found Jeff Lewis fixing toilets and his wife, Rita, sautéing flounder at the restaurant.

The Lewises have been here 10 years. They live here, as do approximately 50 full-time residents, in a park model home that’s bigger than a RV but smaller than a mobile home.

The home is parked by the river. From his doorstep, Jeff Lewis can see campfires on weekends.

Lewis, a large, tattooed maintenance man, watches the action from his golf cart, his transportation from fix to fix.

The regulars, few among the 105 campsites, do potlucks and meet for coffee and donuts on Thursdays during season.

by RV for 10 consecutive years.

They’ve grown comfortable in a home that hasn’t always seemed permanent.

“We don’t like that it’s for sale,” Jeff Lewis said. “We just worry.

We live here and work here. If somebody were to close it down, we lose our home and our job.

Usually it’s just one or the other.

We can find work, though. We have skills. It’s not that.”

For Kaplan, Linger Lodge is business.

He described strong interest in the property but would not speculate on a timeline for the sale.

“This is just a piece of real estate,” Kaplan. “We’re trying to move on.”

LaRusso, a longtime restaurant manager, understands that.

“It would not be my choice to sell it, but business is business,” LaRusso said.

For those who live here, uncertainty never seems to go away — even for a place with so little change in its character.

“Most here have seen everything,” Jeff Lewis said. “We’ve seen different owners; we’ve seen it go up for sale; we’ve seen it go up for auction.”

Lewis’ ringing cell phone interrupted the thought, but he spoke through it.

“We’re kind of gun shy. It might sell. It might not sell. I suppose it probably will sell.”

With that, a chirping frog ringtone sent Lewis off to another assignment.

Superintendent recommends firing five administrators Manatee County School District Superintendent Rick Mills has recommended firing five school administrators based on findings from a misconduct investigation of a former Manatee High School assistant football coach.

The district, after a twomonth internal inquiry, determined the administrators, a list that includes Bob Gagnon, an East County resident and assistant superintendent who formerly served as assistant principal at Lakewood Ranch High School, poorly responded

to groping allegations against Rod Frazier, the football coach.

Mills also recommends terminating Scott Martin, a staff attorney and former assistant superintendent; former school district investigator Debra Horne; and former Manatee High assistant principals Gregg Faller and Matthew Kane.

The five administrators have been on paid leave since August.

“All employees of this district are expected to make students their primary professional concern,” Mills said in a statement.

“Moreover, as leaders, district administrators have a paramount responsibility to meet the expectations of providing a safe and secure environment for students and staff. Unfortunately, the findings of the Frazier investigation reflect that these administrators failed to fulfill these obligations; causing me to lose all confidence in their abilities to serve as administrators in this district. I further found that just cause exists to terminate their employment.”

The district’s inquiry supported a police investigation

that concluded with Frazier being charged with seven counts of battery for alleged lewd behavior toward students and staff at Manatee High.

Frazier resigned from his post in July.

In August, the state charged Gagnon, Horne, Faller and Kane with failure to report child abuse, a third-degree felony in Florida.

Gagnon, Kane and Faller were also charged with lying to police.

All have pleaded not guilty.

Gagnon, also a former principal of Manatee High, was briefly the interim superintendent of the district after Tim McGonegal resigned last September.

The termination of the administrators will be considered by the school board at its Oct. 14 meeting.

It’s fantastic to teach the kids. I like listening to them talk when they don’t know I’m listening. I can hear them at snack time comparing each other’s food labels, and I probably get two to three emails every week from parents thanking me. A lot of them say their child is actually teaching them.

tween a good, nutritious choice and one without the nutrients they need.”

Simon piloted the program last year as a way to teach her students the importance of understanding nutrition at a young age. She says the idea stems from personal experience: Diabetes, heart disease and other health issues run in her family, and she was determined to make a change.

“Three years ago, I changed my life and the way we eat as a family,” she says. “I thought I ate well, and I thought I understood nutrition, but I didn’t understand the science of it. I had to look so hard to find that, and I thought, ‘Why is that, and how can I get that information to kids in a way they can understand?’”

This year, she earned a $500 grant through Gulf Coast Gives to buy food and ingredients to use in lessons throughout the year. Students compare food labels and learn to make healthy snacks and meals. Simon says her goal is not to dictate what they eat, but to give them the skills to make their own informed decisions.

The fourth-grade students having a conversation in Amanda Simon’s class boast a vocabulary well beyond their years: trans fats, lycopene, lutein, micronutrients — hardly typical gradeschool fodder. But, these students sound right at home as they carefully analyze food labels to compare caloric and fat content and nutritional value as “nutrition detectives” in Simon’s wellness class.

“Basically, I talk to kids and teach them how to be savvy consumers, know what’s in their food and read labels to determine the ingredients,” she says. “We go through a lot of hands-on investigations, looking at labels and learning the difference be-

IN THE CENTER RING Gena Shvartsman Cristiani grew up in a juggling family as a prodigy juggling performer who continually traveled the nation. Just recently, she started calling Sarasota home.

The large Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ tent was pitch black. Gena Shvartsman Cristiani stood in the center ring, where she couldn’t make out any faces. But, she could tell it was a packed house from the glow of flashing, swirling and colorful toys the audience members were holding.

For most circus performers, it takes at least a few smaller circus performances before getting to go on the road with The Greatest Show on Earth, but not for Cristiani. She was a center-ring juggling sensation at just 12 years old. And, after traveling the world performing for the past 15 years, the now 30-year-old has just started

“Growing up in the circus and traveling across America was very exciting, very interesting and informative,” Gena Shvartsman Cristiani says. “It was also very normal to just get up and leave all the time.”

calling this area home. She’s one of the featured acts in the Sahib Shrine Circus, which takes place Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sailor Circus arena.

Cristiani originally hails from Russia. It was in a small circus building there that the fifth-generation circus performer remembers watching her father, Eugene Shvartsman, riding bareback on a brown horse while juggling — he was wearing a black costume decked out in rhinestones — like a glitzy Johnny Cash. It captivated her, so, when she was 6 years old he taught her to juggle.

“It was something that I knew I wanted to do,” she says. “I wanted to be on stage or in the ring, and I was going to do just that — minus the horse.”

At first, she couldn’t juggle three balls.

Now she can juggle seven. She can also juggle five clubs … on fire … while doing spins and kicks in 4-inch heels. You can see this high-heeled display in a video at YourObserver.com.

She also does hat spinning, ball bouncing and balancing, and hoop and ball tricks — most of which she’ll do in the upcoming performance.

“Not in heels,” she says. “I can do a lot more tricks without heels.”

For Cristiani, performing is a rush. Once, when she was a teenager, a metal club came down on her face, but she continued to perform without missing a beat. Her father, who was throwing her the clubs, kept gesturing that she should leave the stage, but her adrenaline kept her from noticing that her pretty face was bloody and bruised until she finished her act. She fell in love with the

adrenaline early on, and dedicated her life to practicing as many as eight hours a day for competitions and performances.

Cristani has traveled across America and as far as China and France to perform. Her “normal,” like many of the other circus performers who call Sarasota home, is packing a suitcase and heading to a show. She has learned to check her clubs and hoops when she flies because it always takes longer getting through security.

“If I say I’m from the circus, I have to follow it up by answering a whole bunch of questions,” she says with a laugh.

What’s curious for non-circus families is par for Cristiani. In 2004, she won the club category in one of the World Juggling Federation’s world competitions, which was televised on ESPN. There are 68 famous jugglers listed on Circopedia, the online encyclopedia for circus acts, many of whom Cristiani meets at annual conventions. There’s also a Juggling Hall of Fame, but performers must be retired for five or more years to qualify.

“There are a lot of great jugglers out there,” she says.

One soon-to-be-juggler, her 2-year-old son, Mace, watches his mother in awe, and seems to be picking up on his family genes.

“He throws (things), and he’s very intent on it,” she says. “Mace will spend an hour just throwing — one day he’ll catch it,” she says with a chuckle. She’s sure her son will continue his family’s legacies, but she’s OK with him choosing whatever path he wants.

Cristiani’s husband of seven years, Mateo Cristiani, and she met when performing in the same circus in Canada — his family does an acrobatic trampoline act, and he’s a seventh-generation performer.

She saw him on the trampoline and knew “she was in trouble.” He’s the reason she now happily calls Sarasota home.

It’s because of her son and husband that she’s planning to cut back on traveling and performing — her priorities have changed a little. Cristiani will focus more on short-term guest appearances and shows as well as a few other “normal” business ventures. Of course, they’re all related to her juggling passion and circus heritage. When she’s not being a wife and mother, she paints elaborate circus costumes; co-owns a custom cake business with her mother-in-law, Mara Cristiani,

STEPPING UP

Lakewood Ranch High junior Kelley Ainsworth and freshman Ande McDonald are adjusting to their new positions on the court.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Kelley Ainsworth knew the time would come.

The bumps and bruises would begin to fade and the pain inflicted by her run-ins with the court would become a thing of the past.

She just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

A libero and defensive specialist, the Lakewood Ranch High junior, who is playing on the Mustangs’ varsity squad for the first time this season, anticipated learning how to set next year in preparation for college volleyball.

But when senior setter Ali Milbourn suffered a back injury early in the season, Ainsworth was thrust into the role earlier than expected.

“I wasn’t exactly prepared to go into it this year,” Ainsworth says of setting. “I was really nervous.

I already was nervous coming in playing libero because it’s a big responsibility. It’s like being the quarterback on the football team, but, instead, it’s volleyball.”

As a result, freshman Ande McDonald, who has been playing libero since she began playing volleyball in sixth grade, assumed the role of Lakewood’s starting libero.

“That first game I felt a lot of pressure because I’d never played with these girls before and they were all used to it,” McDonald says.

The transition initially proved challenging for Ainsworth and McDonald, who are

both learning their new roles on the court while still trying to maintain the same intensity and skill set that powered Lakewood to a berth in the Class 6A Final Four last season.

Since taking over their starting roles, Ainsworth and McDonald have helped lead the Mustangs to a 16-4 (5-1 Class 7A-District 10) record. Ainsworth is averaging 9.5 assists per set, while McDonald is averaging 6.2 digs per set.

For Ainsworth, the biggest adjustment has been relying on her hands to do the work.

“When you’re a libero, you use your hands as a last resort,” Ainsworth says. “Setters can’t do that.

Ainsworth spends a good majority of time before and after practice working with coach Perri Hankins on setting in hopes of becoming more consistent on the court. Over time, Ainsworth hopes to improve her skill set enough to practice different plays and run the offense more smoothly.

In addition to getting additional reps in during practice, Ainsworth also turns to Milbourn, who continues to be a fixture on the sidelines, for guidance.

“Whenever I’m out on the court, I hear her in the back of my head,” Ainsworth says.

“She’s been a very big help.”

For McDonald, libero is the only position she’s ever known. So, rather than having to learn an entirely new position, McDonald’s biggest transition has been in getting to know her new teammates while adjusting to the speed of the game at the varsity level.

“The toughest part is just reading the hitter because there’s so much to cover in the back,” McDonald says. “I’ve gotten used to the whole flying-after-the-ball thing.

“I just have to remember to stay positive,” McDonald says. “I’m still just the little girl out here playing with big girls. I just have to take what they say and know they mean the best and are not just picking on me.”

One person who has been especially impressed with McDonald’s play on the court this season is Ainsworth, who knows firsthand the pressure that comes along with the position.

“Ande is so much better at libero than I was at a freshman,” Ainsworth says. “Every freshman on varsity is nervous coming in, but she’s always confident. She’s just as good as I am, so it’ll be amazing to see how good she is when she’s a junior and senior.”

But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t occasionally wish she were out there defending the back row alongside McDonald on a routine basis.

“I miss it a lot,” Ainsworth says.

“I think libero is the most fun position on the court. There’s nothing like the feeling of diving down and getting a hand on it. I miss

“It’s been a really good opportunity,” Ainsworth says of moving over to setter. “I didn’t come in expecting to play the entire time, but there’s nothing like on-court experience to make you play better.”

Miscues hamper Pirates A pair of missed extra points proved costly for Braden River, as the host Pirates fell to Booker 20-18 in non-district action Sept. 27.

Braden River took the lead on their opening possession, when running back Titus Humphrey punched the ball in from 2 yards out, capping off a 12-play, 80yard drive. However, the Pirates failed to convert the extra point after an errant snap.

Booker responded on its ensuing possession when

running back Marlon Mack took the ball 80 yards down the sideline for a touchdown on the Tornadoes’ first play from scrimmage.

The Pirates blocked the extra point to tie the game at 6-6.

Mack added a 41-yard touchdown run on the Tornadoes’ next possession to give Booker its first lead of the game.

Trailing 20-6 in the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Jacob Huesman connected with Justin Ross for

a 12-yard touchdown, but the Tornadoes blocked the extra point attempt.

Huesman connected with Marcus Balliette for an 8-yard touchdown with one minute, four seconds left in the game, but the Pirates were unable to convert the two-point conversion.

Braden River, which fell to 2-2, returns to district action Oct. 4 at Sarasota.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The story of Stamper’s Cove, a new craft store in Lakewood Ranch, is best told through the two black tables tucked deep inside it.

These tables, as storeowner and sole employee Kathy Bixler tells you, are more than tables.

They are high-end tables, handcrafted and wooden, meant to hold a Thanksgiving turkey.

Inside this store, the tables will play host to theme crafting nights, during which female crafters will wheel their pocketed, bejeweled crafting bags into the room, whip out their materials and watch “The Bachelorette.”

They will craft, sure, but they will also talk about their pets, whose pictures will hang from a bulletin board over the tables.

“My daughter said, ‘Mom, you bought dining room tables!’” Bixler said. “The tables are the first pieces of the store I bought. Good, sturdy tables are important to my vision, where I create an environment where people want to be part of a community.”

Stamper’s Cove, a niche store for scrapbookers, rubberstampers and paper crafters, has its grand

opening Oct. 5, and with it comes the perfect topper to Bixler’s life — the bun to her sandwich, she says.

Before Bixler lived the corporate life, managing sales for 15 years at Avon, she was a teacher in Sarasota County, a job she began when she was 30 years old.

Bixler left teaching for more security. Now that she retired from Avon, Bixler returned to her first passion — creating.

“I wasn’t going to sit home and eat bonbons,” Bixler said. “I love the smell of paper. If I could make it a fragrance, I would. But I had to make sure I wasn’t opening a store because it fits my hobby. It has to have the potential to be profitable.”

Bixler bets that today’s do-it-yourself culture will make her store a hit.

Stamper’s Cove sells paints, inkpads, ribbons, glitter, stamps, dyes, stains and more.

Researching the industry, Bixler traveled to a cardmaking convention in Cincinnati.

She dragged her pocketed craft bag there.

“Oh, everyone has one of those,” Bixler said.

they buying? What vendors from which were they buying?

She quickly found the whole scene didn’t move fast enough for her; it was too casual for her ambition.

The supplies she ordered for the store, many from the West Coast, came slowly.

“Having been from the corporate world, it’s hard for me to relax,” said Bixler, who put a coffee maker next to the two crafting tables. “There is no sense of urgency with these people.”

Since she moved into the space in August, Bixler has been sitting at the tables and crafting items that now greet customers on a display at the front of the store.

This showcase features greeting cards and a scrapbooks she made herself and, also, unused

clear and wooden stamps.

“I wanted to show people what a finished product can look like if they use such and such ingredients,” Bixler said. “It’s about inspiring ideas and building off each other.”’

Collaboration defines her idea for craft nights and “Crop for a Cure” events.

In October, Stamper’s Cove hosts an event for people to cut and crop their photos and donate money to breast cancer.

Bixler plans to hold similar such events.

And, one day, not surprisingly, she hopes to expand.

“That’s how confident I am in this store,” Bixler said. “I always have the mindset that I’m 10 years behind.”

Mullins family organizes reward-money fundraiser The family of Patrick Mullins, who was found dead in February after boating on the Braden River, held a fundraiser to help solve his mysterious death.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office recently reopened the case, after the Mullins family expressed disappointment in the investigation’s progress.

The Mullinses believe Pat, a gentle, methodical man known for singing at church and around the house, did not kill himself.

“Our hope is to get this resolved for the family,” said Dave Bristow, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office public information director “It’s sad. Everyone hopes for closure, and we are in the business of closing cases. There’s a chance the family may never know.”

EAST COUNTY — The family and friends of Patrick Mullins, a former librarian at Palmetto High School who was found dead in February, held a fundraiser in his honor Saturday, Sept. 28, at the King Family Farm.

Jill Mullins, Pat’s widow and a librarian at Lakewood Ranch High School, hoped to raise $10,000 to give as reward money to somebody who might have information about her husband’s death.

The event, which featured a silent auction, food — including Pat’s favorite fish, smoked mullet — a live band and games, raised $11,200.

“People are lovely,” Jill Mullins said. “To see this much support is amazing, and it shows people want and deserve the truth about what actually happened to Pat.” Mullins, 52, disappeared Jan. 27 while boating on the Braden River. His boat was
