‘Any dream will do’ Hannah Swain spent two years in a hospital bed with a life-threatening form of leukemia. Now that she’s a survivor, she has a message to share.

Mallory Gnaegy

“Hannah is honestly a breath of fresh air at the hospital (she goes twice a year for testing),” Paula Swain says of her daughter. “Everyone wants to be there when we go for checkups because she does cartwheels in the hall, and when she learned cursive she’d show them … they are her family.”

There are shy children, and then there’s 10-year-old Hannah Swain. The energetic Sarasota native talks in circles as she tells the story about how, two years ago, her dream of meeting her idol, Miranda Cosgrove, star of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” came true. Hannah covers every detail: how she rode in an airplane for the first time; how she was upgraded to first class thanks to the generosity of a stranger and got to eat a free sandwich; how she sat in the pilot’s seat; how the taxi from the airport didn’t have air conditioning; and how she rode in a limo. In her version, a few more “likes” are strewn about. Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida granted Hannah’s wish of meeting Cosgrove. After that encounter, she set her sights on becoming an actress and advocate for cancer awareness. “If I didn’t (ever get cancer), I don’t think I would be doing acting,” she says. Now, Hannah splits her time between Los Angeles and Sarasota as she works toward making it big. She not only enjoys it, she’s confident about her talent: “But, not to brag!” she’s quick to say. Sometimes she hides her face when she watches her own work on-screen; other times she thinks it’s really cool. Since making the decision to become an actor, Hannah has appeared in one episode of ABC’s “Castle”; has done a few commercials; has won a Young Artist

// Arts&Entertainment Award for best performance in the short film “Geronimo”; is waiting for a recent pilot for “YogaKids” to get picked up; and will appear onstage in Venice Theatre’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” All of this — and she survived leukemia. Her mother, Paula Swain, says advocacy through acting is her daughter’s calling. “She says, ‘Mom, I’m going to make it some day, and I’m going to help kids with cancer and visit them in hospitals,’” Swain says. Hannah makes appearances and speaks on behalf of Make-AWish Central and Northern Florida, The Pediatric Cancer Foundation, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Cancer Society and Cookies for Kids with Cancer. She also has aspirations to do improv acting during hospital visits in Los Angeles. Her life now is remarkably different than how she remembers it growing up. When she was sick, she used to have to wear a mask in public. And, although she’s mask-free now, she still hasn’t learned to drink from public drinking fountains. Hannah was 4 years old when she was diagnosed. She remembers watching an old-fashioned stop-motion animation film while she was being transported in an ambulance to All Children’s Hospital, in St. Petersburg. According to her mother, Hannah was at the beach earlier in the day, but wasn’t in the mood for her usual Ritz-Carlton Beach Club ritual of swimming in the pool and getting a hot dog from the snack bar. She was jaundiced, and her stomach started getting progressively inflamed. Hannah was officially diag-

Five things that inspire Hannah Swain:

if you go ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’

1. People — Actors and famous people inspire me to become an actor.

When: 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays from July 24 through Aug. 4

2. My family — They took such good care of me when I was little and let me do acting and do all this stuff for me now. They could have said no. We live in Sarasota, so (my mom) drives all the way (to Venice Theatre) and sits and waits for two hours, then takes me home. Most moms wouldn’t do that, so I love her. And my dad allows me what I want to do and spends money for the acting part.

Where: Venice Theatre, 140 W. Tampa Ave., Venice Cost: $10 through $25 Info: Call 488-1115 or visit nosed with leukemia Mother’s Day 2007. White blood cell counts above 50,000 are considered high-risk; her count was 178,000. The next two-and-a-half years of her life were spent working to get that count to normal. And a great deal of that time was spent in the hospital, including birthdays and holidays. But her mom and dad, Darren Swain, taught her to treat her sickness as if it were an ongoing cold — there was no “woe is me” behavior allowed. They did their best to make the experience better by packing suitcases full of games. Hannah wasn’t scared when she underwent chemotherapy, sometimes swallowing up to 21 pills a day. She wasn’t scared when the cancer spread to her brain and she had to undergo radiation and lost her hair for the second time. And, even if her parents were unsure of the outcome, they never showed it in front of her. Hannah maintained a positive outlook, and she says the possibility of death didn’t cross her mind once. Hannah’s advice for other chil-

3. My friends — They don’t say, “Oh, you had cancer, I don’t want to be your friend,” or “That’s weird, I don’t want to spend time with you.” They like me for who I am. 4. All Children’s Hospital — The nurses and doctors, I love them like family. Courtesy photos

Clockwise, from top left: Hannah Swain on her first day of kindergarten sans hair because of her cancer treatment; Hannah proudly displays the last chemotherapy pill she ever took Sept. 17, 2009; Hannah smiles on set of ABC's "Castle" — she was the only child on set, and they had a candy buffet just for her; and Hannah rides in the pilot seat on her way to meet Miranda Cosgrove, her wish granted by Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida. dren going through what she did: “You have to have confidence that you’re going to get better,” she says. Hannah’s story is akin to main character Joseph’s in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Hannah is strong and de-

termined, and so is Joseph, which is why director Brad Wages opted to cast a Make-A-Wish advocate. And Hannah hopes to inspire sick children with her role. “Look at me now! I’m better, and you’re going to get better, too,” she says.

5. God — He allowed me to live. Maybe because he thinks I’m a good person or because I’ll do good in my acting career.

THINGS Perfect Pools In a town where swimming pools are common, these three are anything but ordinary. They not only provide a place for exercise or a cooling dip, but they also give a focal point to the homes they so beautifully complement. The view from indoors toward the watery splendors draws guests like a magnet, and lounging around the pools’ perimeters on a sultry summer evening — particularly with a martini glass in hand — is the perfect way to end the day. Choose your favorite from this trio of glamorous Sarasota pools currently on the market, each with a showplace home attached.

1. Family Fun This pool, in a large estatestyle home set on 10 acres, has the feeling of a resort in Mexico or the Caribbean. Its large size and natural look is enhanced by rock outcroppings, a waterfall and lush plantings. It’s the sort of place where kids can happily spend the entire day. Inside the 8,000-square-foot home they’ll find even more to do, with a game room and a home theater. Adults will appreciate the pool’s dramatic nighttime lighting, plus the home’s highend finishes in the Tuscan style, with custom stone, marble, onyx and mahogany, along with hand-painted murals and a kitchen with an arched-brick ceiling. Priced at $2,999,000. For more information, call Robert Sherman of Premier Sotheby’s at 941-313-1301.

2. Sophisticated Style 136 Osprey Point Drive This elegant infinity pool in a traditional-style home suggests the south of France, with its purple bougainvillea and views out over Little Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Accessed directly from the three-story living room, the pool terrace offers a covered loggia with a completely equipped kitchen. The home itself is set on more than half an acre of prime waterfront and contains seven bedrooms (in-

cluding a master with his and hers baths and dressing areas), a fitness studio, a four-car garage and an elevator. Its location in The Oaks, one of Sarasota’s most prestigious gated communities, gives it great security and amenities, including golf, tennis and dining. Priced at $3.9 million. 3. Tropical Chic

1504 Casey Key Road

Crisp and modern, the pool of this Carl Abbott-designed home on Casey Key epitomizes Florida chic. Its unusual triangle shape takes advantage of the bayfront setting overlooking the Intracoastal. However, the home also faces the Gulf, with the secondfloor living area offering views of the private white-sand beach. It’s a tough choice for cocktails: the bay or the Gulf? You’ll also find four bedrooms (including a semi-detached guest suite), four-and-a-half baths, floors of polished white granite, a boat dock and, most of all, the trademark Abbott geometry of clean, spare angles and walls of glass framing the tropical landscape and sky. Priced at $2,395,000. For more information, call Joel Schemmel of Premier Sotheby’s at 941-587-4894.

by Mallory Gnaegy | A&E Editor

Playwright talks ‘South Beach Babylon’ Sarasota audiences were first introduced to “South Beach Babylon” in 2011 during a reading of the play, still in draft form, at FST’s Sarasota Festival of New Plays. Miami-born playwright Michael McKeever has had seven other plays read in the festival during the past two decades. In fact, the readings’ successes cropped full-fledged productions of “37 Postcards” and “The Miam-ians” on Florida Studio Theatre’s stages — and, now, “South Beach Babylon,” which opens July 24. This will be the first production of “South Beach Babylon” since McKeever made two large cuts to the script. “To have one of your plays produced at FST is tantamount to winning the lottery,” McKeever says. “It’s always such a treat!” Here’s a description of the play: Five South Beach artists prepare for Art Basel —  is that pretty accurate? That’s simply the story line. What the play is really about is that constant struggle for all artists — be it an actor, painter, performance artist, choreographer, etc. It’s the struggle of staying true to yourself as an artist. But, this is a commercial industry; you have to make it commercial enough or accessible enough where people are going to lay down $35 to $60 to see the performance. That’s at the heart of the play, finding that balance (between art and business) when creating artwork. If you could sell your play using

three adjectives, which would you use? Wicked, sexy, fun.

if you go ‘South Beach Babylon’

What’s your history with South Beach? I was born and raised in Miami, and I was living on South Beach when South Beach became “the South Beach.” There was a transition that happened from the late ’70s to ’80s and into the early ’90s, in which South Beach once was a bad, awful place where there was nothing but drug trade and old people. Miami Beach (eventually) developed into a sexy, dangerous place. And, one day, one moment at a time, the island redefined itself.

When: 8 p.m. July 24 and runs through Aug. 18 Where: Florida Studio Theatre (Gompertz Theater), 1241 N. Palm Ave. Cost: Tickets $19 to $42 Info: Call 366-9000 or visit with people you love. You don’t have to be a movie star or a Tony Award-winning playwright. And I take great pride that I’ve supported myself primarily as a playwright. Of course, winning a Tony (would be) fun, too.

Who or what inspired your five artists in the script? It’s certainly not autobiographical. What I wanted was to get different characters to represent different stages of careers, of where they want to be and of success strictly on a commercial basis. Which character best represents where you are on the spectrum of artist careers? I’m stuck in the middle … I’ve never done work I don’t feel passionate about. And, along the same lines, I haven’t ever forgotten that this is a commercial enterprise and a business, and that people are going to pay hardearned money to see one of my shows. I’ve never felt strongly about putting something in front of an audience that will alienate or offend them, no matter how

What’s next for you? Can you tell us about any other scripts you’re working on that we might see at FST in the future? Currently, I’m working on another that’s having a world premiere in March in Miami called “Clark Gable Slept Here.” I’ll read the synopsis: “As one of the silver screen's brightest stars charms his way through the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, his staff tries to figure out what to do with the dead male prostitute on his bedroom floor.” It’s a black, black, black comedy. I was just telling (FST’s casting/hiring coordinator) James Ashford about it and he was excited, so I’ll be sending it to him once the script is finished.

Michael McKeever says if it weren’t for the production of his play “37 Postcards” at Florida Studio Theatre, it wouldn’t have reached the international success it has today. He hopes the same for “South Beach Babylon.” strongly I feel about it. As a playwright, what is it like being an artist in contemporary America? It’s hard. Sadly, the nature of the economy (especially the dip that it took) had a huge impact on the

arts. We’re constantly struggling to get work produced … I find it’s getting harder and harder to do new and exciting work when there are becoming less venues to get the new work produced. There’s something very noble to work in a career you love and
