The donors and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory students in London prove The Observer is read everywhere. “They are a huge integral part of this (three-year) process,” Ben Williamson says of the donors. “The amount of things we could do with them, and just spending time with them (in London) was fun, and (it will also be fun) to take those experiences back to the states.”

Two FSU/Asolo Conservatory second-year students share their London experience.

rom May 6 through June 13, the 12 second-year FSU/Asolo Conservatory graduate acting students studied in London. And for the weeks following, many of the students opted to travel around Europe until conservatory classes start again in the fall. For instance, since their summer classes ended, friends and classmates Lucy Lavely and Ben Williamson have parted ways temporarily to do their own exploring. Lavely traveled to Madrid, Munich and Vienna; Williamson to Valencia, Milan, Malta, Rome, Venice, Budapest and Switzerland. On July 9, they have just met in Amsterdam, where they are sitting in a café to discuss their

London experience. Lavely had been to London once before, but Williamson hadn’t. They stayed at the FSU London Study Center in the heart of the West End — just a walk over the bridge to the West End theaters. The pair explains that all students took three classes — which amounted to about three hours of studying a day. There was a movement class, a clowning class and a voice class. The students learned things, such as how to restructure their breath; and they explored their inner clowns and mastered speaking Shakespearean texts. As for the other hours of the day: “We saw theater every chance we got!” Lavely says.

American Jewry Post WWii: is the Golden Age Past? Following WWII, American Jewry became the most assertive and secure community known to Diaspora Jewish History. By the end of the 20th century, however, danger signs were on the horizon. What do these trends portend and what can be done to secure the Jewish future?

To be specific, the graduate students saw 34 shows in 32 days. In the afternoons, they’d go to museums; visit Camden Town; tour St. Andrew’s Cathedral; and even take a day-trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. Both students consider the days the program donors came to visit them the best part of the trip. Lavely says they shared “all the cool things we found” with their donors. They went to dinner, explored the town and, of course, saw theater together. Overall, the trip was not only a fun and memorable time, it was a great learning experience. “It’s given me stimulation in other areas and taught me to be present in every moment,” Lavely says. “‘Soaking’” is a good word to use,” Williamson says. “… I’ve just breathed it all in.”

Cold treats to beat

summer heat by Mallory Gnaegy | A&E Editor

There’s no escaping the heat during Florida summers. It causes a mass-exodus of snowbirds at the end of spring; it turns the cool Gulf into bath water; it skyrockets electric bills; and it’s so synonymous with Florida that Miami named its basketball team after the heat! When air conditioning doesn’t cut it, we’ve got some refreshing, epicurean ways to cool off and take the squelching summer days by storm.

Written by Tom Griffin, “The Boys Next Door” explores the lives of four mentally challenged men living in a group home in the Boston area. It’s structured in a series of blackout-style brief vignettes covering several months of their lives together. The Players Theatre production, directed by Elliott Raines, offers an intimate view of being handicapped and caring for the handicapped. The play goes beyond that simple requirement, though, and, through its script, as well as the sensitive acting, becomes both humorous and touching. Dylan Jones is extremely convincing as Arnold Wiggins, a hyper, talkative man who’s obsessed with all things Russian and, when under stress, compulsively repeats the word “nyet” and threatens to emigrate. Stephen Pustai is adorably sweet as Norman Bulansky, whose IQ is big enough to allow him to work at a doughnut shop. The doughy treats seem to have taken over his entire life, however, except for his ability to court Sheila (charmingly played by Ellie Pattison), who lives at another group home and is equally enthusiastic about him, especially after he pres-

ents her with a large bunch of keys, the object of her desire for as long as she can remember. Adam Garrison is highly believable as Lucien P. Smith, a large man who’s so debilitated that he can’t even read, although he checks out enough books at the library to be accused of faking it by the state board. The plot twists when schizophrenic Barry Klemper, who believes he’s a golf pro (nicely played by Ron Pearson), is confronted by his abusive father, Mr. Klemper, in a fairly harrowing scene, delivered with uncomfortable conviction by Barry Look. Jack Palmer, the men’s social worker, thoughtfully rendered by Ross Boehringer, shakes up the group with his reluctant, yet understandable, announcement that he has to leave them for a job in the outside world that’s more remunerative and less frustrating. Paul Hutchison makes successful appearances as Mr. Hedges, Mr. Corbin and Senator Clarke, and Lynne Doyle takes two bright turns in the roles of Mrs. Fremus and Mrs. Warren. — Paula Atwell
