Exhilaration…

Maurice, or “Maurie,” as most know him, Richards speaks on behalf of himself and his partner, Jack Kesler: “We’ve started calling our involvement at Asolo Rep ‘our last act’ — it’s not our final curtain, but our last act,” he says with a laugh.

Richards and Kesler were inducted into Asolo Rep’s Crystal Society Wednesday, May 15, which is a society that honors those who made gifts of $1 million or more for the theater’s campaign for excellence. But Richards makes it crystal clear: “We didn’t give the money to join the Crystal Society; we gave the money to perpetuate the program.”

Richards has been promoting and coordinating educational scholarships since he was in his 40s (he’s now into his 80s). The couple moved 19 years ago to Sarasota from Detroit.

They became involved at Asolo Rep four years ago by doing everything from pushing pencils, to attaching labels on envelopes — their initial involvement was getting others involved. That is, until they became student sponsors for FSU/ Asolo Conservatory.

The new endeavor was like “putting a key in your back, turning it and winding it up,” Richards says. Going to lunches and dinners with their students and attending every opening night, class and workshop gave both of them new energy.

“He is such a great talent, and this is his calling,” Pam McCurdy says. “I’m honored to be able to be a part of that.“ “I eat steamed vegetables because of her, and I’d never eat a steamed vegetable,” Les McCurdy says of his wife.

am McCurdy sits at her desk in the box office of McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre. She’s naturally pretty with short blond hair, toned, tan arms and a killer smile. Other than admitting, “I’m the better half,” she’s trying to pinpoint exactly how she supports her husband, when he walks through the door.

“Les, how do I support you?” she asks him.

“Well,” he says in his Tennessee drawl, “marrying me was huge.”

Although Pam McCurdy is too modest to admit it, saying it’s teamwork, her husband is adamant: “If it weren’t for Pam, McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre wouldn’t be.” On June 15, thanks to Pam McCurdy, the business will celebrate its 25th birthday. It all started because of her steadfast work ethic.

When the duo met in 1982 in Sarasota, they were both working as waiters at Bennigan’s.

// Arts&Entertainment Then, McCurdy (nee Pam Taylor) was an MFA student in the FSU/Asolo Conservatory acting program and worked weekend shifts on the side. Les McCurdy was a traveling comedian, and he noticed the petite blonde who worked harder than anyone else.

One day after work, he asked if she wanted to go on a date to his favorite place. Pam McCurdy thought this meant they’d head to Summerhouse, a romantic jazz bar on Siesta Key — but Les McCurdy, instead, took her to Beach Club, which was then a dive bar.

“He’s not a pretentious person,” she says. “He took me to the Beach Club for God sakes.

You gotta respect that.”

“It was a damn good night,” Les McCurdy says looking at his grinning wife. “We sat at a table in the corner, threw money into the jukebox and laughed our asses off.”

They dated until 1984, when Pam McCurdy moved to New York City to pursue acting, and Les McCurdy traveled around the country performing standup. Eventually he retired from the road to help his friend, Ken Sons, run The Comedy Catch in Chattanooga, Tenn., where Les McCurdy and Ken Sons grew up together. Pam McCurdy joined her boyfriend there, they got engaged and were married in 1987.

McCurdy managed the kitchen and wait staff of the comedy theater.

“I had no idea what I was doing!” she says with a laugh.

Ken Sons sold his club, and the newlyweds moved to Siesta Key. The first year of marriage was what both describe as a honeymoon until one angered-filled

The couple brought spoons and Haagen-Dazs to the beach where they watched the sunset.

They returned home, and Pam McCurdy was washing dishes when she looked up and asked, “Where’re the spoons?”

As Les McCurdy tells this story, his wife starts giggling. The spoons were missing, and Pam McCurdy was livid. So, Les McCurdy went through garbage cans, looked in cars, scoured the beach and spent hours searching. Pam McCurdy is belly laughing now, trying to stifle her laughs with her hands as Les McCurdy continues to tell the story.

“She’s stomping around the house mad as a wet hen, ready to leave me, when I went to the silverware drawer and counted

… ” he says. There were eight forks, eight knives and — eight spoons. From that moment on, they’ve never sweated the small stuff. It’s how the relationship — and business — survives today.

“I wouldn’t have thought about opening a comedy club on my own,” he says. “It’s not in my nature.”

But because Pam McCurdy said she’d take care of the responsibility, they went through with it and began McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre. Pam McCurdy would take care of the back of the house, Les McCurdy the front of the house; and Ken Sons, who had moved to Sarasota, would run the Humor Institute.

In 1988, they hosted their first weekend of comedy at what is now the Holiday Inn and Suites Airport Sarasota. At that point,

Les McCurdy was still touring, and Pam McCurdy was waiting tables at Charlie’s Crab (now Crab and Fin) to make ends meet. They had a daughter in 1994, Taylor, and Les McCurdy stopped touring to become what he calls “Mr. Mom.” He would do the front-of house stuff the audience could see, and Pam McCurdy was the foundation: developing the business, doing inventory, overseeing employees, doing the taxes, etc.

After 10 years of operation and bringing famed acts, such as Tommy Chong and Jeff Foxworthy, and discovering acts, such as Larry the Cable Guy, new management of the hotel lounge gave them three days’ notice to find a new place. They downsized from a 300-seat banquet hall to a 90-seat room inside now-closed restaurant Big Kitchen. It was Pam McCurdy who went on the lookout to find their own space.

“I always wanted it,” she says.

Teatro, a $1 movie theater on North Tamiami Trail where Les McCurdy had taken Pam McCurdy on a date when they were first dating, became vacant in 2000. It was perfect. They leased it and renovated it. It remains the spot where McCurdy’s is located today.

It was an old building erected in 1963, so, after big storms, McCurdy would walk in and discover the paneled ceiling collapsed in some places. She, of course, would be the one to take care of it and pick up the pieces.

“She’s the foundation for why this community even has this place to offer — you can’t give more support than that,” Les McCurdy says.

1994 — The McCurdys’ daughter, Taylor, is born.

1998 — The comedy club relocates to now-defunct The Big Kitchen at 3900 Clark Road 2000 — The McCurdys lease the Teatro building (movie theater). It takes one year to renovate.

2001 — The doors to McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre open in September at its current location open.

Teenager composes a promising future Nicholas Lewis has played violin since the age of 6, composed music since age 13, and, now, at 18 years old, he’s playing conductor to a real orchestra.

Most graduating high school seniors hate the question, “What’s next?” But Out-Of-Door Academy senior Nicholas Lewis has a plan — an undergraduate degree in conducting with a minor in piano from Florida State University. His dream job is conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, he’s conducting a free community concert featuring The Church of Palms Orchestra and three members of the Sarasota Youth Opera, at Bay Village Auditorium, 8400 Vamo Road. They’ll be performing a repertoire Lewis selected; he’s been working with them for the past five months.

One song they’ll perform is a violin sonata, which he composed.

The time he’s spent preparing for the concert is not part of a school requirement — it’s just for fun.

And what are his friends doing during his weekly rehearsals with this orchestra, his piano lessons, violin practices, performances with the Youth Opera and internship with the Sarasota Opera?

“Partying,” he says with a laugh.

It’s no wonder this 18-year-old feels older than his peers.

He’s been writing music since the seventh grade, after seeing the movie, “Copying Beethoven,” an artistic account of the final year Beethoven lived.

Lewis grew up in Bucks County, Penn., and moved one year ago to Sarasota with his chemist father, Dale, and his nurse mother, Debbie. He joined the joined Sarasota Youth Opera, where he met youth opera Music Director Jesse Martins — who would become his mentor and piano teacher.

Martins had Lewis sit next to the conductor stand and take notes during youth opera rehearsals. He started him out small — to see if he were serious — and slowly introduced him to the art of conducting at rehearsals. After Lewis landed the opportunity through a teacher at ODA to conduct The Church of Palms Orchestra, he needed a little guidance.

“I’ve learned so much, it’s amazing,” Lewis says. “You don’t know what you don’t know. And the more you learn, the more you realize what you don’t know.”

Martins also arranged Lewis’ internship with Sarasota Opera. Martins advised him on the repertoire selections for the upcoming concert; suggested using three Youth Opera singers; and will accompany the Church of Palms orchestra on piano.

“Of course I wanted to help. I never had this opportunity when I was his age,” Martins says.

But Lewis had the hard job: taking an orchestra of 20 novice and intermediate musicians, all dif-

“At first it was strange, sleeping in what used to be my mom’s office,” says Kate Honea.

S

ince 1990, 5570 Gulf of Mexico Drive has been the home of the Longboat Observer. As the Observer Media Group grew, so did the staff. The Longboat Key office space was not big enough for everyone and a majority of the Observer reporters moved to the downtown office, on Main Street. However, the Longboat staff still resides on the first floor of the original office.

Last year, the former upstairs office was transformed into a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment for Dex and Kate Honea. Interior Designer Sally Trout and contractor Rusty Chinnis provided insight into how to turn an office into an apartment, and helped to recreate the look of the upstairs space.

Knocking out and repainting walls, laying down new flooring, adding new tiling and finding just the right furniture to go into the new apartment was a six-month task that was finished up in July.

The Honeas, along with their two dogs, Rossi and Nicky, are enjoying their new home and love being out on the island with the rest of their family.

They even kept a few mementos from the old office, including a sign that once hung on the door to the office, because they wanted to keep the feel of the old office where Kate spent many of her days with her family over the years.

outhside Village — located on Hillview from Tamiami Trail to Osprey and on Osprey from Hyde Park to Arlington — may well be the friendliest, “foodiest” neighborhood in town. It has no fewer than 15 nourishing establishments ranging in size and in ethnicity. Throw in a couple of watering holes (Legends Sports Bar and the Five O’Clock Club) and you can eat, drink and listen to music here from early morning to late at night. And that’s exactly what you’ll find at 62 Bistrot; “not stars, not gastronomie, but traditional French food from grandma’s recipe book,” according to chef/manager Christopher Nebra. The restaurant serves crepes and lunch items starting at 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends; there is dinner seven nights a week. Nebra says that from time to time, there is a coupon for a complimentary glass of wine on the website as well.
