Sarasota County to amend 2050 plan Sarasota commissioners voted May 8 to re-open Sarasota’s 2050 growth plan, which developers have called ‘too stringent.’

EAST COUNTY — With a vote last week, Sarasota County commissioners agreed with developers who say Sarasota’s plan for future growth — called the Sarasota 2050 plan — limits economic growth with overly stringent regulations meant to preserve

open space and avoid urban sprawl.

On May 8, Sarasota County commissioners voted 4-1 to reopen Sarasota 2050 and begin the process of revising its regulations.

“This is a step in the right di-

rection to correct deficiencies in the plan, so it can actually work,” said Todd Pokrywa, vice president of planning for Lakewood Ranch developer SchroederManatee Ranch.

Grace Community Church has moved from its former Sarasota location to Lakewood Ranch.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The Rev. Chip Bennett may be the only pastor in town with a decades-old Van Halen record on his bookshelf and three electric guitars hanging behind his desk.

The theology books lining two walls of his new office only account for 20% — or less — of his collection. He jokingly calls himself “the pastor of disaster.”

As he puts it, he doesn’t fit the “mold” of a traditional pastor.

Three years ago, he never dreamed he’d be preaching again, after having left the ministry because of frustration about denominational politics.

But Bennett, the pastor of Grace Community Church, is soaking in his role and newest venture, as he leads the 2-year-old church into new territory — Lakewood Ranch.

“I’ve realized I’m wired to do what I’m doing,” Bennett said.

After nearly two months readying part of an office building in the Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park for services, Grace celebrated its grand opening March 3. Bennett is excited to see what happens next and is getting acclimated to the church’s new home.

He hopes East County families will find the church to be refreshing and welcoming, particularly to individuals who may have been hurt by experiences at churches.

Bennett knows well that sense of disillusionment.

“I, like many ministers, got disenfranchised with the political part of church work,” Bennett said. “I got to the point (where) I stepped out of ministry.”

Bennett didn’t lose faith, but he never intended to go back.

When people asked if Bennett would go back into the ministry, he answered honestly; it would happen only “when God parts the Red Sea for me,” he said.

Simply put, it would take a miracle, of sorts.

Bennett got into the car industry by working at a Land Rover dealership in Tampa. Then, he moved eight years ago to Sarasota to manage a different dealership.

In 2010, the owner of the dealership — who knew Bennett’s pastoral background — approached Bennett with an odd idea: to buy a church.

“That was my ‘Red Sea moment,’” Bennett said.

“That’s how Grace Community Church really got started.”

The owner purchased the former Youth for Christ

building in Sarasota. Bennett began preaching on Sunday mornings. Bennett was counseling churchgoers, raising seven children with his wife, Mindy, and working on his doctorate in theology, all while managing the dealership full time.

“We grew (as a church) in spite of me never being there, except to preach,” Bennett said. “I really was an absentee (pastor).

“I was wearing out,” he said. “That’s when (the church’s business administrator) said we needed to start thinking about relocating so we could grow, and I could do this full time.”

Grace sold its church building in Sarasota in late 2012 and found a new home in the Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park.

Grace invested monies from the sale of its building into building out the Corporate Park space; it focused on making the facility appealing to children and youth with fun colors and themes on the walls and solid programming.

Bennett said he hopes to see churchgoers grow spiritually, which leads to church growth. He also wants to let people know they don’t have to look or act perfectly to have a relationship with God or attend church.

“I believe God meets us all where we’re at,” Bennett said. “We want people who would never step into a church or who have been bruised by the church (to feel welcome).”

Bennett envisions Grace will stay at its new location for about three years, before purchasing and building on a permanent site.

Local leaders address area education needs

Local leaders shared their visions for education in the area and state during a Lakewood Ranch Kiwanis luncheon.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Florida’s educational system will be getting more funding from the state — a change that will benefit students from prekindergarten classes through college.

Local legislators Sen. Nancy Detert and Sen. Bill Galvano joined Manatee County Schools Superintendent Rick Mills, University of South Florida Regional Vice Chancellor for Academics Bonnie Jones and State College of Florida President Carol Probstfield on stage May 11, as the Lakewood Ranch Kiwanis Club hosted its Educational Leadership Luncheon, at the Polo Grill and Bar. Panelists, who spoke about changes in budgets, law or their respective organizations,

shared their vision for education locally and in Florida, while updating attendees on future plans and needs for education in the community.

The Florida Senate’s 20132014 General Appropriations Act, passed in March, increased public school funding for grades kindergarten through 12 by $1.2 billion, which included a minimum of $480 million in performance-based salary increases for instructional personnel.

The act also included funding research university preeminence, performance funding for industry certifications at high schools and performance funding in the state college and university systems for high-demand programs, among other items.

SOUNDING OFF Sen. Nancy Detert “We put part of the money in the budget to pay for (a mentoring program) at every college campus,” Detert says. Legislators have allotted $15.8 million for mentoring programs in Florida’s kindergarten through 12th-grade public schools.

Bill Galvano “This was one of the most aggressive education budgets we’ve had in a decade,” Galvano says of the budget the Florida Senate approved in March. “For (kindergarten) through 12th grade, we increased (funding by) $1.5 billion. We got $22 million more for the K-12 system in Manatee (County).”

Carol Probstfield, State College of Florida president “We try to work with students and connect them with resources in the community,” Probstfield says of students needing remediation. “(We want) them to get the help they need to be successful.”

New owners hope to revive the South’s ‘fastest short track.’

EAST COUNTY— A framed poster of a shark with the word “Ambition” across the top hangs from the wall above Kevin Williams’ office. It threatens to devour those who don’t buy in to a plan worthy enough for a racetrack once known as “the fastest short track in the South.”

When Williams and Mike Chase, two decade-plus long friends, entrepreneurs and former co-owners of the Punta Gorda Speedway, closed on the Desoto Speedway in East County in late February, they sought to do more than patch up the track, re-do bathrooms and food service, drop ticket prices and install more stands — though they completed all those tasks.

They transformed the place into the freshly named and branded Full Throttle Speedway,

a track bold enough — and fast enough — to one day host annual “Speed Weeks” leading up to the Daytona 500, the new owners hope.

The duo bought the threeeighths mile oval racetrack, at 21000 State Road 64 E., Bradenton, from Sarppricone Land Development Inc., for $1.2 million.

Racing season opened May 4.

Williams and Chase had been involved with the Punta Gorda Speedway since its infancy; they began leasing the track in June 2010 from the government’s Federal Aviation Administration.

That track now is inoperable.

Now they want to build back up a track they’ve envied since childhood.

Williams, 50, is a man with a high school education who’s spent his life building and, then,

owning.

Born in Greenfield, Ind., Williams graduated high school and went to work climbing telephone poles in Fort Worth, Texas.

When he wasn’t installing cable, Williams was watching, driving and building cars. He built his first car in 1984 — a blue-andwhite Monte Carlo street stock car with No. 24 on its tag.

“People might look at the car and be like, ‘Man, it’s Jeff Gordon,’ but he wasn’t even around then,” Williams said.

He won a Sportsmen Championship in 1996 at age 32.

Williams wanted to own a track, and he learned the business sense required to run one by working on small 1,250cc engine Legend cars and talking with Humpy Wheeler, legendary NASCAR promoter, in the pits at

Charlotte Motor Speedway races.

Williams’ son, Josh, was one of 10 riders to be selected for Humpy’s Heroes, a driver development program.

“Humpy taught me the importance of public relations — about the special way you need to treat racers,” Williams said. “He taught me about making a track fanfriendly and clean.”

Josh Williams, 19, is a part of the ARCA Racing Series. The father-and-son team also learned about racetrack operations from traveling around the country to Josh Williams’ races.

Williams needed a track to run; he found it while visiting his parents in Charlotte County.

When he first visited, he wanted to find the fastest short track in Florida and watch races there.

Williams had known about Desoto Speedway and its reputation for speed, but he also heard

that the track was running down, as drivers sped elsewhere for races and the community stopped watching.

Still, a search for adrenaline pushed Williams to watch races there.

The 18-degree, banked, hilly turns allow sprint cars to complete 13-second laps, or 30 laps in seven minutes, at 130 to 150 miles per hour.

Before he could take a turn at reviving the place, Williams needed more financing.

He met Chase, the owner of an insurance company, 12 years ago.

Their sons race together.

When their lease expired at Punta Gorda Speedway, the duo saw a new chance.

“This is an opportunity to redeem a facility that was once known for how great it was,” Williams said. “It needed an uplift and a new identity, and we think we can get new race fans in East Manatee and Lakewood Ranch.”

Williams, also the owner of a cable construction company, a car-maintenance company and a pest-control company, worked 14-hour days to revive the track.

The owners’ first move was to cut ticket prices from $15 across the board to $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and free for children under 12.

They redid the bathrooms and overhauled the kitchen with new appliances and air conditioning.

They redid the beer bar and tiled offices.

They repaired turns one, two and three on the track and smoothed them out to make them even faster.

They also removed the pit area in which the drivers park.

Bigger plans call for a “Fan Zone,” where fans can buy a higher-priced ticket and be escorted into the pit to meet drivers and watch as they fix their cars.

Full Throttle Speedway will operate year-round, at least three Saturdays a month, and pull spectators from as far away as Orlando, Williams said.

“This is what we do,” Williams said. “We enjoy the adrenaline of fast racing.”

Education First, a nonprofit student-exchange company, will be bringing 50 teenage students from France and Spain to the East County and surrounding area this summer and needs host families for the program.

Students will be in the area from July 6 to July 31, to improve their English skills.

The program does not include any classroom time, because it is an immersion program. Host families need to provide housing, three meals a day, transportation to weekly field trips and a caring, stable environment.

Local teenagers in host family homes can earn 60 community service hours toward Bright Futures.

Adults must pass a criminal background check.

Host families get to pick the student they host based on gender, age and hobbies.

Exchange students bring their own spending money and are medically insured.

One local eatery is hoping to bring platefuls of community support to military troops overseas.

MacAllisters Grill & Tavern, on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, is working with the Sarasota Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America to collect items for troops serving in Afghanistan.

Customers can take away a postal flat-pack box and fill it with items. The address label and instructions for mailing are included. A table is set up at the restaurant with information about the program.

Recommended items for boxes include socks, T-shirts, gum, peanuts, chewing tobacco, pens, paper and coffee. Items should be non-perishable.

The drive will continue through Memorial Day.

Andy Hooker lives for adrenaline. After 16 months as a door gunner and crew chief aboard a combat helicopter in the Vietnam War, Hooker spent his career producing rock concerts.

Hooker flew — first as a door gunner, then as a crew chief — with two pilots, from Camp Bearcat, halfway between Saigon, Vietnam, and Vung Tau, Vietnam.

For Hooker, the days he spent tethered to an M-60, afraid to leave his position as guard, made him an adrenaline junky.

When Hooker enrolled at Grahm Junior College in Boston at age 23, he was in search of a career that would bring similar adventure. He got something more extreme: threats and isolation. Fellow stu-

dents responded poorly to his presence; civilian society was fed up with the war and taking it out on soldiers.

“I had deep confusion at that time,” Hooker said. “You’re leaving a place that’s dangerous, and you come back to school where kids give you attitude and make you walk on the other side of the sidewalk.”

Hooker blocked out the venom as best he could, while studying media communications.

“My first reaction was to beat the crap out of (students spitting and cussing at me),” Hooker said. “You don’t know the right way to act.”

After college, Hooker gravitated toward the rush of the entertainment business.

He became a production manager of a concert committee.

In a career spent in live-show production, Hooker, traveled with bands such as Aerosmith and Boston, working stage lighting and sound. He spoke about Vietnam with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, of Aerosmith, and other veterans who worked

alongside him on the production crew.

Executing a rock concert gave Hooker the same adrenaline rush he experienced in war.

“My civilian job was an extension of what I was doing in war,” Hooker said. “I didn’t run into that bulls*** of a regular job. A young soldier is given a lot of power.

You have to have your stuff together. I still carried that with me in entertainment.”

During a recent Sarasota County Veterans Council meeting, Hooker, now 63, met a veteran who suffered a cruel return from five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hooker reminded the veteran of what his service means now — a world where the public can separate politics from heroism and greet him with applause, not spit.

It’s a world where Hooker wears his hat comfortably.

“I’m thrilled I can walk around today, showing my colors, without people cranking on me,” Hooker said. “People thank me for my service. That’s a good feeling.”

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Andy Hooker wears his Vietnam Brotherhood hat tight to his head now, covering the closecropped hair he used to wear long as a disguise to hide from war protesters.

He takes off his thick, dark sunglasses when he speaks, revealing a twinkle of hope from once-distrusting eyes.

As an 18-year-old, Hooker, the door gunner and crew chief for the 335th Assault Helicopter Company, passed through an Oakland, Calif., airport between tours of Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, and watched as red-cheeked protesters hurled expletives and spewed spit.

“That impacted me to such a point that when I went back home a second time, I didn’t wear my uniform,” Hooker said.

“I wore civilian clothes. People, then, couldn’t separate politics from the men and women serving the country.”

When Hooker, a sergeant E5 Vietnam War veteran and president of the Sarasota County Veterans Council, walks Lakewood Ranch Main Street during the Tribute to Heroes Memorial Day Parade Sunday, May 26, he first will think of fallen soldiers. But, he will also recognize active troops, who will return to festive homecomings.

It’s a world made possible by the men and women in boots who came before them.

Hooker’s military time was spent on combat assault missions aboard helicopters without doors. The helicopters peppered enemies with machine gun fire and dropped rockets on Viet Cong troops.

Employees of Texas Roadhouse are honing their dancing skills each week, as they prepare for the opening of the new East County eatery, which is slated to open May 27, Memorial Day, at 5710 Ranch Lake Blvd., Bradenton.

Servers at the restaurant, which specializes in steaks and ribs, will perform a line dance for their guests every 45 minutes, as part of normal festivities.

Texas Roadhouse Managing Partner Alan Hansen said employees are practicing the dances each week, during a meeting and staff barbecue.

Each Texas Roadhouse has a chance to send a team of employees to compete annually in a national line-dancing competition against other restaurant teams, if they qualify.

Hansen says 200 new hires will train May 18 through May 25, for the grandopening.

NEWSBRIEFS + School Board land sales would bring $2 million The Manatee County School Board approved two land sales that may bring more than $2 million for a district with virtually no fund balance.

On May 6, the School Board unanimously approved the sale of the CheckersOwen Annex, a building that houses the district’s human resources department, for $1.6 million to Blackrock Development Holdings LLC. It also voted to reject a previous contract for the property from Gold Glove Ventures LLC. It also approved a contract for the sale of the Instructional Material Center, site of an unused print shop on 26th Street West, in Bradenton, to Firkins Acquisition Inc. for $550,000.

Previously, the board had planned to sell the Checkers-Owens property, located next door to the school district building on Manatee Avenue West, in Bradenton, to Gold Glove Ventures.

Blackrock Development Holdings had a better offer because it put $50,000 down in earnest money, board members said.

The board voted 3-1 on the sale of the Instructional Material Center. Board member Dave Miner opposed; he wanted more money for the property, which was appraised at $1 million.

Both contracts allow for a more than 30-day inspection period, during which the buyer can back out of the deal.

The anticipated closing dates are June 28 for the Checkers-Owen Annex and June 21 for the Instructional Materials Center.

Board member Bob Gause recused himself from voting, saying his firm, AllisonGause, either has done business with the two firms or may in the future.

ones related to housing-type requirements, density limitations, fiscal-neutrality conditions and others.

When Sarasota County officials approved their 2050 Plan in 2002, they wanted to create urban-style, walkable communities in undeveloped areas of the county, particularly lands east of Interstate 75.

But, more than 10 years later, only one project has been developed — Neal Communities’ Grand Palm development, in Venice.

The 5,144-home Villages of Lakewood Ranch South, approved 19 months ago, has yet to break ground. SMR officials have said the company will not start building the project, until

ville Road and University Parkway without disruption — during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. May 24.

The ceremony will be held on the roadway’s western bridge to the regatta island. Individuals must take the Cattlemen Road entrance from University Parkway to get there.

The new roadway extends North Cattlemen Road about 2.8 miles, from Richardson to Desoto roads. It includes four 12-foot-wide travel lanes, 4-foot-wide bicycle lanes, a 10foot sidewalk along the western side of the roadway, two 30-foot span bridges and other road-related structures, such as lighting, stormwater ponds and medians.

It also includes the realignment of a land bridge along Nathan Benderson Park to provide better access to the park, while

they know it can be completed in its entirety.

Developers have raised concerns with the plan, saying the restrictions are too specific and need updates and modifications.

“No one is suggesting changing the goals of 2050,” Pokrywa said. “This is about tweaking obstacles, like clustering density and preserving open space, to meet goals we all bought in to. Right now, the plan has barriers.”

Developers especially have problems with a fiscal neutrality rule that requires projects to periodically prove they fully pay for the public services they receive and do not burden existing taxpayers. The plan calls for a review of finances every two years, said Nora Patterson,

allowing for the park’s major lake to be lengthened to accommodate a 2,000-meter rowing course — a change that will allow it to host international rowing competitions.

Four members of the Swedish-based International Federation of Rowing Associations, or FISA, visited the park site in April; it is one of two venues being considered to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

“This (opening) will provide another major north-south roadway in Sarasota, but it also will provide full access to (Nathan Benderson) Park and (the future Mall at University Town Center),” Susan Walsh, Sarasota County Communications, said.

“It’s a biggie.”

The portion of Cattlemen Road, running from Richardson Road and Brown Lane, already has opened, but no vehicular or pedestrian access is available north of Brown Lane.

Brown Lane, just north of the San Palermo neighborhood, has been the northernmost point for Cattlemen Road, from Fruitville Road, for years.

The North Cattlemen Road extension also will provide drivers with a much-needed north-south alternative to I-75 from University Parkway to Fruitville Road and relieve traffic on Honore Avenue, Sarasota County officials said.

Total project cost for the roadway extension is almost $21 million.

the only Sarasota County commissioner to dissent in the May 8 vote.

Patterson said she opposed the vote, not because she’s against revisions to the plan, but because she feels the public should be provided a forum to give more input before county staff deliberates.

Patterson does not support eliminating fiscal neutrality completely, but she recommends reducing monitoring requirements to once every five years.

Pokrywa says fiscal neutrality is not meant to be a regulatory mechanism, at all.

A builder would have to cease construction if fiscal neutrality is not obtained. Such a prospect limits a developer’s ability to secure financing for a project in

the first place, Pokrywa said.

“One can demonstrate fiscal neutrality just by analyzing a project at the beginning,” Pokrywa said. “Looking at it in smaller increments doesn’t serve its purpose. It would place Sarasota at a competitive disadvantage. We are not in position to construct the first house if we can’t build the last house.”

Patterson says she is willing to meet half way, but being monitored at the beginning of the process and, then, building all the homes with no more oversight, “is not good enough.”

“If we’re talking about overhauling the plan, I will vote against it,” Patterson said. “I don’t know if a compromise is possible, but I hope so.”

Slugger bags ODA Cameron Smalley was named the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund’s third scholarship recipient May 6.

SARASOTA — Cameron Smalley didn’t think anything of it.

It was a typical Saturday afternoon, and the 14-year-old second baseman and his Bradenton 14U Sun Sox teammates were in the middle of the Nations Spring Slam Championship, at Lakewood Ranch Park.

It was baseball as usual for the Sarasota Middle School eighth-grader, and Cameron patrolled the infield with a quiet confidence that comes with having played America’s favorite pastime for the better part of the last nine years.

There, on the diamond, Cameron felt entirely in control.

But, outside the dugout, Cameron’s mother, Tammy, was harboring a secret — one she had been keeping to herself most of the afternoon.

Only after umpires called the final out and he walked over to see his parents did Cameron learn his life had changed in a matter of innings.

An elated Tammy Smalley told her son he had just been named the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund’s third scholarship recipient.

“I was shocked,” Cameron says. “I couldn’t really talk. I was just so happy. It’s an honor to just represent their family and to follow Taylor Emmons, who was a really good person.”

Tammy Smalley agrees.

“We were very shocked,” she says. “We don’t have that kind of luck. We knew they liked him, but it felt like forever.”

Cameron always assumed he would be going to Riverview High School next fall.

But, about four months ago, Cameron’s mother approached him about Out-ofDoor Academy.

“I had always known about ODA, but it wasn’t in the cards,” Tammy Smalley says.

“The public high schools seem so big to me.

I know he would’ve been fine, but I thought he would’ve done way better in a smaller setting. He’s a pretty special guy.”

After learning more about the school and its baseball and academic programs, Cameron knew ODA would be the perfect fit.

“I wanted to go to ODA because of how many kids get good scholarships to colleges; and the baseball program is developing and starting to get really good,” he says.

“Overall, it’s a great school.”

Cameron spent a day shadowing at ODA, before applying for the Taylor Emmons Scholarship in mid-February. He filled out an application, wrote a couple of essays and took a reading, math and writing test at the school.

He then spent two months waiting to hear back.

After receiving the scholarship, Cameron met with the ODA baseball coaching staff and attended the Thunder’s final three

“It was pretty cool,” Cameron says. “I knew those would be my teammates and coaches who I would be playing for. It was cool to see what everyone was like.”

Cameron began playing baseball when he was 5 years old and transitioned to travel ball four years later. Since then, Cameron, who plays for Sarasota Babe Ruth Baseball and the Sun Sox, has developed a passion for the game.

“I really want to try and play baseball professionally,” Cameron says. “I just really want to go as far as I can with baseball.”

Two years ago, Cameron won the Sarasota County Cup Championship Home Run Der-

by, after hitting 14 home runs. Cameron and another player were tied in the final round of the competition, before Cameron ultimately pulled away to win the title.

“It was a battle,” Cameron says. “I was just hoping to hit one home run and make it past the first round. I was one of the smallest kids out there, but I ended up doing really good and winning. It was pretty cool.”

Now, the slugger is eager to join a Thunder team that has reached the postseason each of the past three seasons. He hopes to elevate his game to the next level.

“I’m just really happy I’m going there,” Cameron says.

Lady Mustangs end their year at state semifinals

Seven Lakewood Ranch High seniors walked off the field for the final time May 10, bringing an end to their prep softball careers, which included four district championships, two regional championships and two Final Four appearances.

For the second-consecutive season, the Lakewood Ranch softball team saw its season come to an end in the Class 6A state semifinals.

After a rain delay that lasted more than an hour, the Lady Mustangs fell to eventual state champion Columbia (Lake City) 7-1, at the Vero Beach Sports Village.

“First and foremost, I hurt for the seniors,” coach Tony Cummins says. “I guarantee you this was not what their expectation was. This was not where they thought it would end. Probably, what I’m feeling most is for the seven who worked so hard all year.”

A pair of errors in the first inning resulted in two Columbia runs. Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first inning, Lakewood’s McKaleigh Goodale reached first on an error and eventually came around to score on Amber Wimmer’s single to cut the deficit to 3-1. But that would be as close as the Lady Mustangs would come, because Columbia added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

wood finished with seven hits — all of which were singles.

But with Rak, Jackie Schoff, Sierra Schappacher and Talli Sharp, who all were in last Friday’s starting lineup, returning next season, along with Maddie Biggs, Caitlin Brown and Crystal Brown, who also saw playing time throughout the season, and a strong crop of incoming freshman, the future looks bright for the Lady Mustangs.

“We have a great core of kids coming,” Cummins says. “We’ve got more building to do. We’ve got more growing to do.

Hopefully, we will be back here again next year.”

Lightning strikes at ODA The Sarasota Lightning, a new Pop Warner football league, will open its season Aug. 1, as a Peace River Conference member.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Tony Squitieri’s first profession has always been football.

The East County resident grew up playing high school and college football, before transitioning to arena football.

Now, the former professional quarterback is returning to the gridiron for his 18th season as a Pop Warner football coach. But, this season, Squitieri’s son, Anthony, and the rest of his Junior Midget squad, will have a new look and

a new place to call home.

On Aug. 1, the Sarasota Lightning, a new Pop Warner football league, officially will take the field for the first time at The Outof-Door Academy.

Formerly the Suncoast Bucs, an organization that had struggled to find a home over the past five years, the Sarasota Lightning was formed as a way to promote youth football in northern Sarasota County.

“It’s about youth sports, reaching out to the high school and

building a community,” Squitieri says. “The kids look up to (the high school) players, so we’re trying to integrate the community in that way. It’s about the whole experience.”

Through a partnership with The Out-of-Door Academy, the Sarasota Lightning will hold all of its practices and home games at ODA. “Field location is everything,” says Squitieri, the league’s president. “The Suncoast Bucs organization was going through its

ups and downs, and we wanted to help them out. ODA stepped up to the plate, and that’s really what started it all.”

The Sarasota Lightning is open to all players and cheerleaders ages 5 to 15. Players will be divided into six age divisions, ranging from Tiny Mite to Midget.

Players will play in the Peace River Conference, which stretches across Southwest Florida from Manatee County to Naples.

Games will be held on Saturdays.

Registration is now available online. Players also can register in person from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

“It’s all about youth sports,” Squitieri says. “We’re trying to find good families to build the organization through the community. We want them to reach out, take part and make it a memorable experience for the kids.

“We want to build that brand and spirit, so that kids can take pride in where they are going,” Squitieri says. “Teaching football is great, but, as a coach, mentally seeing them grow is fun to watch and be a part of.”

Braden River High senior forward Trevon Young was named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Class 7A Player of the Year, following the 2012-13 boys basketball season.

Young, who will play football for the University of Florida this fall, was a four-year starter and a two-year captain for Braden River. He helped lead the Pirates to backto-back district championships his sophomore and junior seasons.

Young finished the year averaging 17 points, 12 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

He also dished out 50 assists and shot 59% from the field.

+ LRH athletic department to host golf outing The Lakewood Ranch High athletic department will host the 2013 Mustangs Golf Classic May 18, at the Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch.

The four-person scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Cost is $100 per person and includes golf, on-course contests, lunch, an awards reception, silent auction, door prizes and raffles.

Checks should be made payable to Lakewood Ranch High School.

Hole, awards and premier tournament sponsorships also are available and range from $100 to $3,000.

Proceeds from the event go toward annual sports expenses for all of Lakewood’s athletic teams.

The idea for the golf outing developed earlier this year, after athletic director Shawn Trent and softball coach Tony Cummins were discussing the Manatee County School Board’s current economic status.

“I offered to spearhead this to make sure that the quality of our athletic department did not have to suffer,” Cummins says. “Last year, we reached a goal that no other school in the state had ever accomplished. It would be foolish to let that go.”

Lakewood was named the 2011-12 Class 6A Academic and Athletic State Champions.

The Coastline 14U Rox Black volleyball team recently earned a national bid to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior Nationals.

The team earned a national bid, after placing second out of 57 teams at the 2013 USAV Florida Regional Qualifier April 27 and April 28, in Orlando.

With the bid, the girls will compete in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior Nationals June 28 through July 5, in Dallas.

Players include: Allison Allmer, Emma Boughner, Andrea McDonald, Madison McNally, Rachel Meringer, Samantha Norden, Grace Pfeil, Margo Schnapf, Annie Shaw and Kahlee York.

Home in Panther Ridge sells for $1,575,000 The following residential real-estate transactions took place between April 29 and May 3.

A home in Panther Ridge tops all transactions in this week’s real estate. Walter and Anita Bavol, of Sarasota, sold their home at 20510 79th Ave. E. to Jack Steenbarger and Susan Benson-Molnar, of Bradenton, for $1,575,000. Built in 2004, it has four bedrooms, four baths, one half-bath, a pool and 6,640 square feet of living area.

It previously sold for $1,425,000 in 2012.

Gilles Gilbert sold his home at 15384 Blue Fish Circle to BRKC Properties LLC for $230,000. Built in 2005, it has two bedrooms, two baths and 1,543 square feet of living area.

+ Intercoastal Medical Group to open new office

An entity led by family practitioner Dr. John Steel, of Intercoastal Medical Group, has purchased 2.9 acres north of State Road 70 in Lakewood Ranch for $1.85 million.

Fred M. Starling Inc. will serve as development manager/general contractor to develop a 25,000-square-foot, two-story medical office building. The building will feature physician offices, exam rooms, diagnostic and imaging equipment, labs and physical therapy facilities.

Intercoastal Medical Group is scheduled to occupy the building in January. The group will relocate its office from its current location, a leased 8,000-square-foot building at 8340 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

Fred Starling, president and CEO of the Starling Group, also negotiated the purchase of the site with the seller, an affiliate of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch. “(What was attractive about that site) was the exposure and visibility at that location and the amount of residential growth that’s planned in that area over the next five to 10 years,” he says.

Intercoastal Medical Group is a professional association of more than 65 physicians. It currently has seven locations in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
