OUR TOWN + Ranch rallies against cancer East County residents will rally to fight cancer Saturday, May 18, as the American Cancer Society hosts its annual Lakewood Ranch Relay for Life event at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA. This year’s relay starts at 1 p.m. and will continue through the morning of Sunday, May 19. The community can get involved by walking in the relay, or by coming out and purchasing food and drink or participating in games and other activities relay teams host to raise money for the fight against cancer. Sarasota County to amend 2050 plan Sarasota commissioners voted May 8 to re-open Sarasota’s 2050 growth plan, which developers have called ‘too stringent.’ EAST COUNTY — With a vote last week, Sarasota County commissioners agreed with developers who say Sarasota’s plan for future growth — called the Sarasota 2050 plan — limits economic growth with overly stringent regulations meant to preserve

open space and avoid urban sprawl. On May 8, Sarasota County commissioners voted 4-1 to reopen Sarasota 2050 and begin the process of revising its regulations.

 “This is a step in the right di-

rection to correct deficiencies in the plan, so it can actually work,” said Todd Pokrywa, vice president of planning for Lakewood Ranch developer SchroederManatee Ranch. In the next 45 to 60 days, Sarasota County planning staff will

Sarasota County officially will open the Cattlemen Road extension May 24. EAST COUNTY — A new stretch of roadway running parallel to Interstate 75 is proving to be a tantalizing force, as East County residents eagerly await the opening of a new north-south connector between University Parkway and Fruitville Road. Planted medians, paved roadways and an ongoing roadblock beg the question: When will the North Cattlemen Road extension open? Not today, but soon. Very soon.
