buoyant and sunnysounding orchestral score blares over large speakers, and a male dancer bearing a flute prop leaps and pirouettes to the center of the high-ceilinged studio. Thirty other Sarasota Ballet dancers eventually join him, but after a minute of dancing, their movements become spastic and their faces worried.

Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri, who is setting the ballet, waves her hands and the music stops. “That was the fast one,” she says of the wrong version of the recording. The dancers look relieved, and the whole room chuckles.

When they perform this fulllength ballet, “La Fille mal Gardée,” April 18 and 19, it will be with a live orchestra consisting of Sarasota Orchestra musicians, whom American Ballet Theater’s conductor, Ormsby Wilkins, will conduct. Wilkins not only worked under the composer of the adapted score, John Lanchbery, but says he’s conducted the ballet at least 100 times — he’s sure he has the correct, danceable tempo down. It will be the Sarasota premiere of the classic ballet.

“I love ‘La Fille’ — it’s a great ballet to watch,” principal dancer Ricardo Graziano, who’s dancing the lead role of Colas, says.

“There’s happiness, sadness, love, comedy, and it’s different; it’s with normal people and not a swan queen or princess.”

In fact, in its 1789 debut, it was one of the first ballets about “real” people and not royalty or mythical creatures.

The two lead roles are physically demanding roles and require much stamina and strength of technique. For instance, in the first scene, there is a pas de deux (or duet) and variation (solo); in the second scene there is a pas de deux and variation; and in the third scene there are two pas de deux.

“When you break it down like that, it’s a lot of work,” Ricardo Rhodes, principal dancer also dancing Colas, says.

Kate Honea (Lise), Victoria Hulland (Lise) and Graziano (Colas) nod their heads in agreement. In comparison, the leads only danced one pas de deux in the other full-length ballet this season, Sarasota Ballet’s own “The Nutcracker.”

There are many firsts in this ballet.

“The use of props is one of the most unique things,” Honea says.

“Even, say, for ‘The Nutcracker,’ you always hold the Nutcracker doll, but this is actually using the props while you’re dancing.”

And the dancers find the use of props, such as long ribbons or butter churners, leads to a higher probability of error. Although they aren’t expecting to make mistakes, they are always antici-

pating what to do if one should occur.

One such prop is a live pony that carts the dancers on stage.

To problem solve, one dancer will follow the horse with a dustpan to quickly clean up any accidents.

“We’ve heard stories from Iain (Webb) about how it would poop every time he had to dance, so he always thought someone was playing a joke by feeding the horse before the show,” Honea laughs.

In another scenario that’s easier to anticipate, there’s one scene in which the dancers must throw a ribbon to each other, wrap it around the other dancer and create a cat’s cradle pattern by using specific arm grabs, crossing patterns and knots.

“I’ve seen some mini-disasters,” says Wilkins, who typically watches the ballet from his conductor seat. “I’ve seen the whole thing come out like an abstract painting rather than a cat’s cradle, but I don’t anticipate that will happen (at Sarasota Ballet).”

Wilkins’ connection to Sarasota Ballet is through Director Iain Webb and Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri — he conducted at Wells Royal Ballet in England at the same time they were dancing with the company.

Webb and Barbieri both danced “La Fille” under Ashton’s direction at the Royal Ballet. And the Sarasota premiere will be almost a distinct copy of the original production.

The set and costumes come from Birmingham Royal Ballet,

which first performed it in 1962 as a replication of the original performance. The sets were shipped about a month ago, and Michael Brown, freelance costume consultant for Birmingham Royal Ballet, will arrive April 5, to fit each dancer in his or her costume.

Brown ensures the decadesold costumes are thoroughly cleaned and replaces, repaints and dyes costumes as needed to keep them looking like Osbert Lancaster originally designed them in 1960.

“If you’ve been with the Royal Ballet like I have for 35 years, you grew up with (this) production,” Brown says. “You treasure these productions.”

Similar to Brown and the dancers, many people in the bal-

let world consider “La Fille” to be a classic — and everyone at Sarasota Ballet is glad to add it to the company’s repertoire.

“It’s definitely going to be the best production we do all season,” Graziano says, “even better than ‘The Nutcracker.’”

Thomas Carabasi met Arts Center Executive Director Jane Buckman when planning a jazz concert there in February — Carabasi is a percussionist and photographer.

“He has a varied rich and creative life,” says Buckman of Carabasi.

Carabasi and Buckman spoke about what’s happening in the world of contemporary photography. Buckman already considered bringing a photography exhibit to the center, but one that differs from the mostly landscape variety.

They decided an exhibit featuring Ringling faculty, all of whom are broad in their approaches to photography, would be a perfect showcase of contemporary photography.

Buckman thinks the artwork of the Durante Gallery juxtaposes nicely with the photos in the Cultural Media Room featuring Jim Johnson’s travel photography — he’s based in Osprey. She calls his work “very unique with arresting composition.”

Dick Hyman shakes up upcoming performance The practically unknown independent film, “Alan & Naomi,” opens with a visual sequence of children playing stickball, in 1942, in the streets of Brooklyn, with instrumental underscoring that plays quietly during the sequence.

“I came (back) to the film years later, and it occurred to me that I could make a vocal piece out of it for chorus,” Dick Hyman, the composer of the film’s score, says.

Hyman is a Venice-based renowned jazz pianist and composer who has scored many Woody Allen films and has more than 100 albums recorded to his name. The 36-member professional choral group Gloria Musicae often features the work of living American composers, such as Hyman. He’s been working with the singers for more than a decade.

When Gloria Musicae’s Artistic Director Joseph Holt and advisory board member June LeBell approached Hyman, a fellow board member, about creating a program highlighting his career’s work at the Sarasota Opera House, Hyman immediately recognized the opportunity.

Although he has arranged other composers’ compositions specifically for Gloria Musicae, this concert features the first composition he wrote for the group. It’s a jazz piece called “Bottle it Up” that features nonsense lyrics and composed scat.

Booker VPA’s spring dance show springs audience to life Spring isn’t the only thing that’s sprung. The students of Booker VPA’s dance program leapt, pirouetted and moved gracefully across the stage during the Spring Dance Show, which took place from March 28 to 30. Students were en pointe — and not just because they danced ballet — they tackled modern styles, too.

Booker VPA dance students spent nine weeks carefully learning and rehearsing the professionally choreographed, collegelevel dance program. Their styles reflect mature sophistication but at times were also comedic.

Music // Sarasota Opera: The Verdi concert One of the greatest of all opera composers, Giuseppe Verdi, is having what would be his 200th birthday celebrated all this year, and Sarasota Opera, being one of the greatest proponents of his work, got an almost seven-month lead (his actual date of birth was Oct. 10, 1813) with a massive concert, at the Opera House, featuring some of his best and least known works.

One problem with a concert of operatic scenes is that there’s no time for the singers to get into character. There are also no costumes or scenery, so the singers are without their usual operatic accoutrements. Another difficulty is singers too often sing an excerpt from a role they’re not yet up to, vocally. (On the other hand, it gives younger, less experienced singers a chance to do a scene or two from an opera that may be fine for them in the future.) And subtlety often takes a backseat to enthusiasm.

Of course, having an orchestra on stage with them, especially one as excellent as the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, led by Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi, is a great support, as is the exceptional chorus of studio artists and apprentices.

The solo singers on stage were no slouches, either. A few did a bit of over-singing, pushing their resources to the very edge of their current abilities, but, for the most part, they came across well.

The Act I trio and Act II tenor aria, which Verdi cut from the original versions of “Un giorno di regno,” were wonderful examples of singers in evening dress suffusing their roles with character and charisma. Danielle Walker, Jennifer Feinstein and especially tenor Hak Soo Kim, were all in excellent voice and, without flailing or flaunting, managed to turn themselves, vocally and figuratively, into their roles.

Sean Anderson and Kevin Short managed a well sung but fairly wooden performance of the Act II duet between Rodrigue and Philippe in the French version of “Don Carlos,” while Walker and Heath Huberg gave a credible performance of the Brindisi from “La Traviata,” although neither is ready to take on the full role at this stage in their careers.

Lindsay Barche, a Studio Artist, made a last-minute appearance for the ailing Brenda Harris in the title role. Although singing only excerpts, Barche, whose voice has grown considerably since appearing here in “The Crucible,” may want to be careful of the roles she accepts. A recent Internet blog dealt with this subject, with singers and managers weighing in on the dangers of singing roles one is not yet up to performing. Having a gigantic voice doesn’t mean one is ready to take on gigantic parts. Doing so could lead to gigantic vocal problems.

Subtlety was not the order of the evening, but extravagance of sound and enthusiasm were. Even more was this thought: Sarasota is blessed to have an opera company that can bring us such excellence. We’re also fortunate to have two such excellent orchestras — Sarasota Opera Orchestra and Sarasota Orchestra — living and performing in our midst. Very few cities, especially of our size, can boast such riches.

The premiere of Asolo Rep’s latest play was to die for, loaded with laughter and applause. The opening-night audience applauded the set, the costumes and the special effects, as well as the actors. Watching Ken Ludwig’s farcical, witty mystery was like spending an evening savoring bonbons and brie: decadent, deadly and delicious.

The production’s unabashed celebration of drollery and farce delights the palate with sheer over-the-top indulgence. For starters, its richly detailed set, which Judy Gailen designed, echoes William Gillette’s magnificent, idiosyncratic medieval castle in Connecticut. The story is based on the real-life character of Gillette, who made a fortune over 35 years as lead actor and playwright of “Sherlock Holmes — A Drama in Four Acts,” in the early 20th century.

The costumes, by Eduardo Sicangco, are emblematic of the glamour of the period. Each one is its own piece of perfection, from Holmesian wool houndstooth to a red velvet full-length, divinely draped wrap, whipped off to reveal daring pale palazzo pants — just kill me now. Both the lighting,

by Mary Louise Geiger, and the sound design, by Fabian Obispo, are highly worthy of note.

Greg Leaming’s direction gives the actors all they need to flaunt their stuff to full effect. The stunning cast plays the theatrical characters to the hilt, reveling in their attention-seeking egos, spouting Shakespeare at every turn, just like a party in the Hollywood Hills.

Brian Torfeh, who is delightfully magnetic as Gillette, makes me think of an elegant Tom Hanks — and who doesn’t want more Tom Hanks? Gail Rastorfer literally throws her beautiful body into the dark soul of Daria Chase, a theater critic everyone loves to

At the heart of this play is a rather dour view of the foibles of humanity. Dowd, having overcome his own propensities through a rabbit, declares, “I’d almost be willing to live my life over again — almost.”

Under the lively direction of Linda McCluggage, the talented cast brings the remaining characters to life. “Harvey” is probably best known as a 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart and Josephine Hull. Mary Chase, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama as a result, wrote the play. The Players’ production captures all the old-fashioned quaintness of a slower, simpler time.

The plot revolves around the unintended adventures of Elwood P. Dowd (played with gentle sweetness bordering on passivity by Allen Kretschmar), a man who probably has no aspirations, whatsoever, having opted out of the rat race of his era. He spends his time visiting his many friends at various bars around town in the company of a 6-foot, 3 1/2-inch tall Pooka, in this case an anthropomorphic, invisible to most, rabbit named Harvey. Elwood is in the habit of introducing Harvey to all and sundry, thus causing his society-worshipping sister, Veta, nicely played

by Laurie Zimmerman, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, played with effective broadness

by Alex Torres, great embarrassment.

Because Veta has become increasingly eager to entertain those she considers important and marry off her daughter, she fears that Elwood’s behavior will scare off future suitors, so she decides to have him committed to a mental hospital. What follows is a comedy of errors, melded to a comedy of manners.

So, is Harvey real, or is he a figment of Elwood’s imagination or possibly his alcoholism? Therein lies much of the appeal of the piece. The playwright posits that Harvey appeared to Elwood because, “I wrestled with reality for more than 40 years, and I’m glad to say, I finally won out over it,” implying that it’s letting go of getting and spending that’s freed Elwood to become the kind and gentle man he is under the influence of Harvey. But, does she mean that it’s better to be a harmless

Boom Times

The year 1926 was the peak of Sarasota’s first real-estate boom, and homes from that era still dot the town’s older neighborhoods. Today they’re highly prized for their charm and character, not to mention their enviable locations. A press release talking about the restaurant in the new Holiday Inn prompted the notion of looking at restaurant options en route to the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. It’s a new hotel (three years) with a new chef (three weeks). Craig Landers has cooked at some highly regarded places in the area. The Sporting Grill’s basic coffee is Seattle’s Best — featured as a premium in many places. The menu includes the exceptional as well as the expected — a recent special was banana-encrusted mahi-mahi, for example. It is too soon to know what impact Landers will have on the Sporting Grill, but there is every reason to be optimistic.

Some of literature’s most beloved characters came to life Saturday, March 23, at Ringling College’s Evening at the AvantGarde. Chaired by Larry and Ann Garberding, the evening’s theme, “A Novel Idea,” was chosen because the college is in the process of fundraising for a new library. Ann Garberding noted the theme was open enough that people could get creative.

A majority of the more than 400 guests went all out on their costumes. Some of the most popular costumes included Mary Poppins, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, characters from “The Great Gatsby” and James Bond. One group paid homage to the “50 Shades of Grey” book series with everyone dressing in shades of grey with chains and other props.

In addition to the silent auction, the event’s live auction featured a dinner for eight at Michael’s On East, four tickets and backstage passes to meet Marc Anthony during his summer 2013 New York concerts and an opportunity to spend a day on the set of producer Paul Schiff’s film “Convention,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Ben Kingsley, which is scheduled to film in August, in New York.

Committee members have reported more than $100,000 was raised for the scholarship fund at Ringling College of Art and Design.

in Sarasota, and eventually, they formed “The Giving Girls” and set up Sarasota’s first women’s “Giving Circle.” They each donated money to ‘The Giving Girls” fund — and they are about to announce their first gift.

The group of BFFs started taking day trips when they realized it was helpful to get away and spend the whole day together, talking through ideas, issues and plans for charitable projects they could support. The group goes to places that are doing something “right,” and the venues are varied — from an animal rescue sanctuary in Ocala, to downtown Chicago.

An intimate baby shower was held for parents-to-be Matt and Jane Thompson Sunday, March 24, at Sarasota Yacht Club. Hosted by Meghan Serrano, Marjorie Broughton, Molly Kasperson and Trevor and Nikki Taylor (who will serve as godparents), the soiree toasted the couple, whose second child, Eli, is set to arrive in a few weeks.

Jane notes that big sister-to-be, Alex, 4, is excited for the new baby’s arrival. “She’s a bit bossy and excited to have a little minion to boss around,” jokes Jane.

hen Wayne and Mindy Rollins moved in 2008, to Sarasota, after living in Los Angeles for 10 years, the philanthropic couple wasted no time immersing themselves in the local community.

They found Sarasota offered the small-town atmosphere in which they wanted to raise a family, and they wouldn’t have to sacrifice their love for the arts or the philanthropic opportunities of a big city.

“We saw that Sarasota had a pulse, and it was open for commerce and growth,” says Wayne Rollins. “We found a sense of place here.”

Through the relationships they formed in their store, and by volunteering their time, the couple found a sense of connection to their new home.

“It wasn’t hard for us to become a part of the town in every way,” says Wayne Rollins.

“In bigger cities, it’s easy to become part of the faceless mass, but here, it feels like you can be involved. Sarasota makes philanthropy very ‘in,’ which is encouraging and welcoming.”

“A lot of people our age don’t think that giving is for them,” says Mindy Rollins. “They think it’s for older people or wealthier people, but you can start now.

It’s a great feeling to make someone else’s life a little happier. It’s almost addictive.”

Wayne Rollins grew up in a prominent philanthropic family in Atlanta, which he says planted the seed for his future endeavors at a young age. He says his father supported a lot of institutions, and his mother gave from the heart.

“I grew up in that environ-

ment,” he says. “So, it wasn’t hard for me to put myself in that position.”

Mindy Rollins says her family wasn’t philanthropic, but that they are empathetic people who were always willing to donate their time. Together, they couple found they’re most fond of supporting organizations related to nature and children’s causes, and they say they’re privileged to be able to give back to the community they love.

“It feels good to be able to give back now, at this age,” says Mindy Rollins. “We’re in a position where it’s comfortable for us, and we’re happy to do whatever we can. It makes us feel great.”

“It’s one of my favorite events,” says Wayne Rollins. “It’s a very intimate setting, and I love the theme, ‘Midnight at the Oasis.’

That’s how we think of Selby — it’s our downtown oasis.”

The event will transform the Selby lawn into an elegant retreat, and its smaller size will allow the couple to tap into their creativity to keep the event fresh.

The decision to chair the Orchid Ball was fitting for the couple; the botanical gardens was one of the first places they discovered when they were new to town. Wayne Rollins says their connection to the gardens began when he and his wife took their son, Magnus, to roam the grounds.

“It’s odd to find a place that’s beautiful, but you can also walk on the grass,” says Wayne Rollins. “A lot of places like this have a very hands-off attitude, but there’s a great informality about Selby. You feel like it’s your own personal garden to explore.”

After a few return visits to the gardens, Wayne and Mindy Rollins found the staff was friendly and engaging, so they decided to get more involved. Wayne Rollins is now on the board of trustees, and he says the decision to chair the event will also help Selby invigorate the annual fundraiser.

“It’s an organization that’s run by very positive, forward-thinking people,” he says. “They know they have to continue to evolve, and I think they knew we’d be able to help add some youth to the crowd.”

Although the couple is young, they’ve cultivated a love for donating both their time and “trea-

social studies: Deborah Blue Attorney Deborah Blue’s love of vintage things spans from her personal style to her home, classic car and 1974 Luzier boat, Stormy. Her family’s famous Christmas cards are almost as recognizable as she is.

Our house on Snead Island

was built in 1954 and has a great old Florida feel — grandfather oaks with moss, tropical foliage, a boathouse and artesian pond.

The land is incredible, and the house has a lot of the original pieces. I’ve tried to make it a cozy, mid-century river house.

It is a true sanctuary and very relaxing. I hate to leave every morning and can’t wait to get home every night.

My love of vintage clothing began with my admiration for my mother’s sense of style and my love of ’50s and ’60s iconic fashion, including icons Jackie Kennedy, Lee Radziwill and Edie Sedgewick. I especially love the mod fashion of the ’60s.

It is actually great fun

to put together modern and vintage pieces in a way that works.

I am always looking for vintage pieces locally, and wherever I travel. Lately, I have started collecting vintage Lilly Pulitzer sport jackets for my husband, George Adley. He is good-natured about indulging my mid-century obsession and conveniently has the dark and handsome looks of Don Draper, the protagonist of the “Mad Men” series.

Regarding my mid-century furniture and appliance collection, friends and complete strangers have gifted vintage items to me, whether appliances, purses or clothing items. One very kind woman from Bradenton read about my vintage appliance collection and dropped off a toaster at my law office with a loving note about her usage of the toaster. I have 50 pieces total, including one of the original Vitamix blenders.

A local banker, who was

the personal representative of her aunt’s estate, contacted me as a result of an article about my ’50s fridge and appliance collection. From that connection, I was able to purchase one of the items on my “dream” furniture list, a Saarinen tulip dining table and dining chairs.

gether 17 years and married 9 years. We were a good blend because his family, the Adley family, started one of the first art galleries on Main Street in the ’80s, so I brought most of the furniture to the marriage and he brought the art.

and going to court. My favorite thing is cross-examination — the trial forum is a chance to take the facts of the case and persuade the judge of the facts as it relates to your client and the law. I’m to the challenge of getting the best evidence across to the court within the context of the law. It’s also a great chance to utilize the literary skills I have from majoring in English literature.
